The Gastlosen circle hike in Switzerland
We take you with us on a hike on the Gastlosen tour, to discover the small Dolomites of Switzerland
Last Update: 15/01/2024 0 COMMENT
The Gastlosen massif (it means inhospitable in english 😉 ) is located on the border between the canton of Fribourg and Bern in Switzerland (and almost the canton of Vaud too… it is a question of a few kms). In fact, it was our friends Letizia and Raph who told us about this mountain range 2 years ago when they came to join us on the Via Alpina hike . We must say that they sold us this hike quite well by telling us about landscapes that looked a lot like the famous Dolomites but in Switzerland. So I (Benoît) took advantage of a beautiful Sunday in September to go with my sister and one of my best friends to hike the Gastlosen and see if it was up to its reputation 🙂
The Gastlosen range : where and what is it?
As I told you before, the Gastlosen chain is located just above the village of Jaun, practically on the border of the 3 Swiss cantons of Fribourg, Berne and Vaud… it is also the linguistic border of Switzerland (or Röstigraben… the Rösti barrier) so don’t be surprised if you hear people speaking Swiss German.
The Gastlosen are best known for 2 things:
- The grossmutterloch (grandmother’s hole) : It is a hole in the middle of the Gastlosen face. According to the legend, the devil, angry with his grandmother, threw her against the rock which would have made a hole in the mountain 😉 . In fact the hole is mostly known to photographers who hurry to come in winter to see and capture the sun’s rays passing through this opening (you just have to google Grossmutterloch to see what I’m talking about).
- Rock Climbing : The Gastlosen and its vertical walls are a paradise for climbers in the region (and even the whole world). There are hundreds of different routes, of all difficulties…. Moreover, the best climber in the world, Adam Ondra, even went here to do the path nicely called “physical torture” in 2013 😉
How to get to Gastlosen? The are several ways to come to the Gastlosen:
- By public transport : You can reach the village of Jaun by bus from the city of Bulle and then there is a chairlift that goes up to the feet of the Gastlosen to start the hike. You will find the necessary information on the website of the SBB (but we have to say that this is not the most accessible place by public transport in Switzerland)
- By car : You can easily drive to the village of Jaun and then drive up to the Sattels buvette . If you continue perhaps 500m after it, there is an ideal car park to start the hike
The Gastlosen circle hike
So I reassure you right away, you don’t need to be a professional climber to enjoy the Gastlosen . In fact, there is a pretty loop that goes all the way around the mountain range and can be done easily in one day. So that’s what we decided to do on this beautiful Sunday in September.
As I mentioned above, it is possible to come by train and bus to the village of Jaun and then take the chairlift that takes you on the Gastlosen Tour trail. But as we had a vehicle, we preferred to go directly to the parking lot just after the Sattels buvette (note that the parking lot was already half full on Sunday morning at 9am… so if you can come for this hike during the week to avoid the crowd it’s better ).
The circuit is doable in both directions but for some reason I don’t understand, most people walk counter-clockwise (and start by going to the soldier’s chalet). Perhaps in a spirit of contradiction, we decided to do the opposite. So first we go up towards the arrival of the chairlift. The sun is still on the other side of the Gastlosen but we are already passing by a nice viewpoint that has been set up for instagrammers (I think it’s more like ruining the landscape but well #GrumpyOldMe 😉 )
After the chairlift, we go down a little and then go back up into the forest to the free chalet. We find the sun again by passing on the other side of the massif while enjoying beautiful views of the Fribourg pre-alps.
The next part of the hike consists of following the entire Gastlosen range for perhaps 4-5 km to the Wolfs Ort. The landscapes are really spectacular and we have all the time to observe the many climbers who are climbing different routes (sometimes very impressive). To our left we also have a magnificent view of all the Bernese Alps and we can see very clearly the magical trio of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch mountains.
While walking you can also see the famous grandmother’s hole (Grossmutterloch) in one of the Gastlosen walls. I will have to come back once in the winter to admire the spectacle of the sun’s rays passing through this opening.
Once we arrived at the Wolfs Ort, we decided to climb a little bit on the left towards Wandflue to have a nice view over the whole Gastlosen massif. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to climb to the top but frankly halfway we already had a great view. We took advantage of this beautiful view to open a good beer from the 7 peaks brewery that we had taken with us in our backpacks. So frankly if you have the energy, we really recommend you to climb a little up to the Wandflue for the view. Even if the path is steep and a little difficult, you will be rewarded for your efforts 😉
After this well-deserved break we go down to the Wolfs Ort and then continue down to the soldier’s chalet (which was previously used by the mountain infantry but which offers food and beds today). We intended to sit on the terrace for a while to eat something, but unfortunately there were so many people that we didn’t have the courage to wait our turn (I repeat, but try to come during the week if you can). So we continued our way on the track that goes down to the parking lot where we had left the car a few hours earlier.
Instead of the soldier’s chalet, we had the good idea to stop and eat a few things at the Sattels buvette, which has a great menu with local and seasonal products. Frankly, we highly recommend it!

That’s it for this hike! I hope I have made you want to discover the Gastlosen, our little Dolomites of Switzerland. In any case, this first glimpse really made me want to come back with Fabienne once (during the week) to maybe sleep at the soldier’s chalet and enjoy the beautiful evening or morning lights in complete quietness. To be continued 😉

Tour des Gastlosen à Jaun
Propriétés de l'itinéraire
Difficulté: Moyen
Durée: 05:00
Distance: 12 km
Montée / descente: +696m / -696m
Altitude min/max: 1479m / 1918m

The tour starts at Saanen and mostly secondary roads are used. It's a beautiful route via Abländschen and Zweisimmen back to Saanen. The Mittelberg pass and the thrilling downhill from Jaun pass are the highlights of the tour.
- Duration 5:30 h
- Distance 63,6 km
- Refreshment stops available
Ferienregion Gstaad Update: 01.05.2024
From the picturesque Saanen, the tour starts along the main road direction Schönried. Turn left in direction to the restaurant Sonnenhof and continue the bike route number 59. The side street with low traffic follows leisurely to the Grischbach. From km 12, it gets tough. With five serpentines and partly high percent of gradients, the side road rises within 2.5 kilometres up to the Mittelbergpass. Then a long descent follows down to Jaun. During the first half, pay attention from cows and gullies. On the street down at the river are some defects on the surface. But all in all, a great descent. From Jaun-Kappelboden, it gets steep again. The further short Jaunpass needs strong calves or still some power left in the battery. Furthermore, the sun shines there from midday very strongly onto the street. To average out at 8.6 %, and the strongest gradients with more than 15 %, it goes up to the pass. Avoid the tunnel and enjoy the beautiful view back to the Mittelbergpass. The descent from the Jaunpass is one of the highlights of the tour. 8.5 kilometres on a good surface with serpentines, straights and nice views. In Reidenbach, turn left and just after right onto the national bike trail number 9. Follow this trail until Grubenwald and go then onto the side street further to Mannried and Zweisimmen. From Zweisimmen, take again bike route number 9 and master the last «Pièces de résistance». Just after Oeschseite and before Saanenmöser are two absolutely dignified «Murs» which exact the last power. The descent to Gstaad and the following part along the river to Saanen can be used to cool down. http://www.strava.com/routes/1145479
The Destination Gstaad is located in the south-west of Switzerland right on the border to the French-speaking part of the country. The Destination is easily accessed by rail or car from the regions around Lake Thun and Lake Geneva and the Gruyere region Direct connections to the European high-speed rail network and all international airports in Switzerland guarantee a time-saving and pleasant journey.

In the shadow of the Gastlosen | Hiking in Switzerland
Explore Switzerland’s own mini-Dolomites | Stay overnight for an incredible sunset
Family-friendly walks (t1) | medium loop hike (t2) | scooter trail, rock climbing & ski resort nearby.
The double-sided Gastlosen cliffs are a striking feature of the Swiss pre-Alps. Towering above the surrounding fields and forest, they resemble Italy’s beautiful Dolomites.
The entire Gastlosen range runs for around 12 km, and forms the border between the cantons of Fribourg, Bern and Vaud. The best cliff section is to the northeast. A number of trails run around the base — and a conveniently located low pass means you can easily walk around both sides of the cliffs in one day. The cliffs are also popular with rock climbers.
The setting summer sun transforms the Fribourg side to a blaze of pink and orange — a breathtaking sight that’s not to be missed. Grab a terrace seat at the Chalet du Soldat for a front-row view; you can also stay overnight at this mountain hut or the Chalet Grat on the Bern side.
The walks described below start from the valley floor on the Fribourg side — but all can be made MUCH shorter by taking a chairlift or driving up the first part. See the trail descriptions and “ getting there and away ” section for more info.

Practical info
Getting there & away.
The walks start and end in Jaun, near Charmey and Gruyère in the Swiss canton of Fribourg/Freiburg. The town is served by bus from Bulle and Boltigen.
► Directions to Jaun on Google maps
For shorter options, take the chairlift from Kappelboden (a little further up the valley road towards the Jaunpass and served by the same bus) or drive up to the Chalet de Gross Rüggli.

What to bring
You don’t need any special equipment to do the walks described here in summer or early autumn. You may need snowshoes or skis in winter and early spring. Whatever the season, be prepared for sudden changes in weather and don’t forget sun protection.
You can stop for food and drinks at a number of points; see the “Facilities” section for details. But take enough water even if you plan to buy a meal or only do a short walk.
If you’re staying overnight at the Chalet du Soldat or Chalet Grat, then you need to bring an inner sleeping bag.
► Packing list | Day hike
You can park in Jaun, at the bottom of the Jaun-Gastlosen chairlift and at the Chalet de Gross Rüggli (see directions above). You can also drive from Jaun to the two buvettes on the trail (see below), but parking may only be for guests.
You’ll be spolied for eating choices: the Chalet du Soldat, Buvette des Sattels and Bärghus am Musersbergli above Jaun, and the Chalet Grat on the other side of the Gastlosen. Check their websites for opening seasons and hours. You can also stay overnight in dormitories at the two chalets.

Dangers & annoyances
The trails are not dangerous in good weather, but guard against:
- Heat stroke/dehydration
Note that on the Gastlosen tour, the Fribourg side of Wolf’s Ort has a drop off that may be more dangerous in slippery conditions and/or if you don’t have good footing.
Trail descriptions & maps: Gastlosen
The trails around the Gastlosen are generally clear, well marked, and not very steep.

This easy path was created by children, with 9 panels telling “The diabolical story of the Grossmutterloch” in German, French and English. The Grossmutterloch (“Grandmother hole”) is a hole running right through the Gastlosen cliffs. We’ve not done it, but it sounds like great fun for little kids!
The path starts at the top of the Jaun-Gastlosen chairlift. The map below includes the walk up from Jaun, which is around 8.5 km return. You can avoid this by taking the chairlift.

The geology around the Gastlosen is quite unique — and this easy loop walk is the perfect way to explore it. Created by Fribourg University’s geology institute and a building insurance association (Ecab), the trail has 12 signs along the way pointing out geological phenomena like landslides, fossils, and rocks once used to make arrowheads.
The Gastlosen geological path starts at the Chalet de Gross Rüggli. The map below includes the walk up from Jaun, which is around 6 km return. You can avoid this by driving to the chalet. Alternatively, you could take the Jaun-Gastlosen chairlift — zoom into the map to see how to get from the top of the chairlift to the Chalet de Gross Rüggli.

Medium loop hike: Gastlosen tour
Jaun – buvette des sattels – chalet du soldat – wolfs ort – chalet grat – bärghus am musersbergli – jaun.
Highest point: 1,928 m (Wolfs Ort pass) Height gain: 1,380 m from Jaun | 780 m from the top of the chairlift Trail level: T1 – T2 Technical details: Slightly exposed on the Fribourg side of Wolfs Ort Distance: 19 km from Jaun | 11 km from the top of the chairlift
You can do the tour in either direction. The path up from Jaun is T1 and mostly a road; this section is part of the regional “78 Freiburger Vorlalpenweg” long-distance walk. You can skip most of this part — and save around 8 km — by taking the chairlift up and down.
The section around the Gastlosen is T2, and a local route in itself: the “262 Gastlosen Tour” . The trail alternates between a hiking trail and roads.
As mentioned above, the Fribourg side of Wolf’s Ort (where you pass from one side of the cliffs to the other) is a little exposed — our friend with vertigo didn’t love this section, but also had no problem passing it.
Nearby mountain fun

Jaun - Dorf
Jaun, with its district Im Fang, is the only German- speaking municipality in La Gruyère. It is situated on the road that goes over the Jaun Pass to the Simmental in the Bernese Oberland. Many of the approximately 700 inhabitants speak the specific Jaun Valley Swiss German dialect.
Description
The waterfall in the centre of the vil- lage and the vicinity of the Old Church are situated in a force field with a remarkable amount of positive energy. The Old Church is now a concert hall and houses the Cantorama Museum, the home of Fribourg choral music (open July/August, Sundays from 2.00 to 5.00 pm). The cemetery of the Catholic Church, with its hand-carved wooden crosses, is worth a visit.
Jaun is surrounded by majestic mountain peaks such as the Gastlosen mountain range and offers unspoiled nature and wonderful leisure activities. The Gastlos- en Express brings hikers to the Alpine tavern. This is where the Gastlosen tour starts with rest stops in the legendary mountain restaurant Chalet du Soldat and the family-friendly Alpine tavern Chalet Grat. The Gastlosen mountain range, with over 800 routes, is a first-rate destination for climbers. The well-known mountaineer Erhard Loretan climbed here, virtually on the doorstep. Walkers have also come to the right place here: A panoramic path leads from the top station to the vantage point with a view of the Gastlosen. The spectacular “Grossmutterloch”, a 15-metre high and five-metre wide window in the rock, is legendary. The one and a half hour detective trail and the Gastlosen geological path are enjoyable activities for families.
In winter, Jaun is a family-friendly skiing area and offers magnificent routes for ski- and snow- shoeing tours. The cross-country ski runs are among those in the region with a virtual guarantee for snow and the six-kilometre long sledge run is renowned far and wide.
