Kaleidoscopic Kedarnath

Kedarnath is a special town and more prominent, owning to its reverence to Lord Shiva, one of the most revered deities in the Hindu religion. The place is nestled by the Himalayan hills in the Rudraprayag district in the state of Uttarakhand. This beautiful town was destroyed in a tragic incident in 2013 when a mid-day cloud burst resulted in torrential rains, and flash floods took away everything! Gradually, the place has emerged again like an unflinching faith and looks more beautiful than ever.

Set up near the shores of the Mandakini river, the town is 3583 m (11,755 ft.) above sea levels and covered by the towering, snow-laden majestic peaks of the Kedarnath range. Kedarnath also means ‘The Lord of the fields’ as it is believed that ‘the crops of liberation’ grow here.

Kedarnath Mandir

Kedarnath 1

One of the main attractions of this town, Kedarnath Mandir, stood the test of time. It attracts millions of pilgrims and travellers alike every year. Kedarnath Mandir is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva spread across India. These 12 conical-shaped natural formations (not man-made) are the places where people pay obeisance to Lord Shiva. The mandir is said to be 1000 years old with no information of its creators to date.

On June 16 and 17 in 2013, in the middle of a peak season, a massive glacier burst took away the lives of thousands of pilgrims, homes were washed away, rivers overflew, the thunderous sound of water overpowered the incessant screams of people for help, but what remained intact was the undisturbed Kedarnath temple, as if witnessing the catastrophe in front, like a God!

Usually, Kedarnath Mandir is closed for six straight months (From November to mid-April) due to the extreme cold and snow. The temple witnesses a hoard of pilgrims over the next six months.

Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip: Complete Travel Guide

' src=

Nothing gives more happiness than taking my mother on a pilgrimage trail of Hindus; better known as ‘Char Dham’. We didn’t visit all the four pilgrims but visited Do Dham-Kedarnath and Badrinath in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand in India. In this post, I am sharing my experiences of the Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip .

The plan happened as I wanted to visit Kedarnath temple as it is one of the sacred Jyortiling shrines and personally I have heard a lot about Badrinath too. I couldn’t get more leaves on work and so ended up planning do Dham (holy shrines) in the summer month of May as summer and early winter months are the best time to visit Badrinath and Kedarnath.

Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip

We planned a week-long road trip through the mountains, villages, and holy shrines. I wanted to do this by public transportation but my mother is in old age and we decided to traverse through the roads of Uttarakhand by car; after all, Uttarakhand is popularly known as ‘devbhoomi’.

Route we followed:

Many people don’t know the char Dham yatra follows a Particular route. One should first visit Yamunotri then Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The trip ends at Badrinath. We visited do Dham among it and below is our route to visit Kedarnath as Part of the Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip .

Delhi-Haridwar-Rudraprayag-Guptkashi-Phata-Kedarnath-Phata-Guptkashi- Chamoli-Joshimath-Badrinath-Chamoli-Karnaprayag-Srinagar-Rishikesh-Delhi.

Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip

If you follow this route, you can cover Panch Prayag too. The driving distance between all the places is approx 8-12 hrs. One should start the journey early and reach early – we followed this rule during our trip. If you see all the sites on the map; they are located pretty close to each other and its aerial distance is not much but mountains make it impossible to reach and one has to take a longer route.

Even my driver informed me that the 2013 flood affected the other side of the mountains & river of Kedarnath which is on the route to Badrinath and debris were found in the river near Joshimath.

Best Time to Visit Kedarnath:

It is to note that temples of four Dham remain open six months in a year; for the period from April to Oct/Nov with different opening and closing dates as decided by the temple committee. You can check the dates on the Uttarakhand tourism website .

Temple remains closed during winter and one cannot find transportation options as the yatra discontinued for the season. Also keep in mind about hilly region travel and spare 1-2 days extra for any unseen events like landslides, traffic jams, and other calamities. I would suggest avoiding visiting it in the monsoon season from late June-mid to September due to heavy rainfall in the state. The best time to visit is from April-Early June summer months and from mid-September-October with lush green valleys and crystal clear sky gives you perfect backdrops.

How to Reach Kedarnath:

Kedarnath is not directly connected by Road. You need to trek to reach Kedarnath which is 10 km long. First, you need to reach Guptkashi before the starting of the trek. There are buses and shared taxis available from Rishikesh (leaves at 4.0 AM) during the Chardham yatra time. There is one direct bus to Guptkashi from Delhi (leaves at 9 PM) which is available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate. you can book it online on the Uttarakhand Transport website.

Also, private taxis are available from Haridwar and Rishikesh. If you are using Public transportation, keep in mind the waiting hours, and plan it accordingly. It is advisable to avoid traveling and driving after 5 PM in the hilly region.

Kedarnath Yatra Registration:

For your Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip , you need to do registration for Chardham Yatra as per Uttarakhand Government and they issue Yatra Pass. The registration can be done at various biometric Registration counters at many destinations on char dham route by paying INR 50 per person. Also, visitors can be tracked with a GPS-based monitoring system so that tourist flow can be check for a particular Dham and this will help to make their journey safe as regular updates will be recorded for their location. Pilgrims can also avail special facilities by the government such as food and lodging using a Registration Card. If you want to do registration online, you can apply here.

Here is my one week itinerary and route to visit Badrinath and Kedarnath- Perfect Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip .

Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip route

Day-1: Delhi to Haridwar.

We reached Delhi by early Noon on a hot summer day of the Month of May. It was freaking hot outside and we left for ISBT Delhi. We decided to take a bus from Delhi to Haridwar. In no time, we got the Bus from Uttarpradesh transport. I have already been to Haridwar and Rishikesh many times but still, these places attract me with its spiritual vibes.

delhi to kedarnath travel guide

The bus took 5-6 hours to reach Haridwar. After checking into the hotel and dropping the luggage we rushed to attend the Aarti at ‘Har Ki Pauri’. The ghat was overcrowded and we couldn’t even find a proper place to stand. But somehow we managed to have a glimpse of it. When Aarti was over, the whole rush got cleared and we stroll through the place and soaked into the vibes of the river Ganges.

Haridwar to kedarnath

We were so tired due to journey and decided to wake up early for next day travel to Guptkashi.

Day-2: Haridwar- Rudraprayag- Guptkashi

The route starts with ‘Yoga Capital’ – Rishikesh and it follows along the river Ganges till Devprayag – one of the Panch Prayag of Alaknanda River. At devprayag, Bhagirathi River merges with Alaknanda River and becomes ‘Ganges’. Here at Sangam (confluence), you can literally see the difference in the watercolor of two rivers.

Rishikesh to Kedarnath

After Devprayag, the road follows along with quaintly flowing Alaknanda River, small villages, stepped paddy fields; green dense forests which were enhancing the beauty of the region. I was just hooked on the river and colorful houses of the tiny Himalayan villages.

Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip

After driving for a few hours, we hauled at Rudraprayag- one of the holy Panchprayag of Alaknanda River. It is the point of confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini. The source of the Alaknanda River is the confluence of the Satopanth and Bhagirath Kharak glaciers in Uttarakhand and meets the Mandakini at Rudraprayag.  We walked down to the bridge until the confluence and thought about how Mandakini’s monstrous nature destroyed the Kedarnath town. Don’t miss this Beautiful town Rudraprayag during your Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip .

Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip

After Rudraprayag, the journey started to reach Guptkashi via Augstmuni and other small towns. We reached Guptkashi by 5.30 PM in the evening. Guptkashi is located at 4,327 ft in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand and it is known for its ancient Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is similar to the one in Varanasi (Kashi). The other well-known temple is dedicated to Ardhanareshvara, a half man half woman form of Shiva and Parvati. It was sunset time and before it got dark, we decided to visit both the temples at Guptkashi.

Guptkashi to kedarnath

Guptkashi/Phata (15 km from Guptkashi) serves as a base to reach Kedarnath. If you are going to trek to the temple; you have to start from Gaurikund(30 kms from Guptkashi,1 hr journey) where you can reach by shared jeep from Guptkashi. If you don’t get a direct jeep; take it till sonprayag and then to Gaurikund. No vehicles are allowed after Gaurikund.

Phata to Kedarnath helicopter ride

After the devasted flood of 2013, people are keener on helicopter rides to visit the kedarnath shrine. Most of the helicopter service providers are based at Phata/Guptkashi/sersi. Check online for the rates as only few companies are in this sector. We had booked our helicopter ride online in advance from Pawanhans to reach Kedarnath.

Phata near kedarnath

Day-3 : Kedarnath

After checking out from the hotel in Guptkashi, we started to reach Phata where Pawanahans helipad is located. Phata is a small beautiful town at a distance of 15 km ahead of Guptkashi. Helicopter ride takes 10 minutes to reach Kedarnath. It is one of the expensive ways to reach Kedarnath but it will give you enough time for Darshan. Initially, we decided to take a ride for reaching the Kedarnath and trekking down to Gaurikund in return, but we couldn’t book a one-way ticket for Phata-Kedarnath. The helipad at Kedarnath is located within walking distance from the temple; hence you can ride back to Phata within 3-4 hours.

delhi to kedarnath travel guide

As we reached the Helipad, we first gave the Printout of our tickets for Boarding Pass. They issued boarding Pass according to the time slot chosen at the time of bookings. If you haven’t pre-booked the tickets, you can book it on the spot at one of the counters. In the season time, make sure to book in advance as there will be a heavy rush.

delhi to kedarnath travel guide

Note: The helicopter ride Price is decided by Uttarakhand tourism when the Shrine opens i.e in April/May and service is offered to few helicopter service operators. If any helicopter service provider is not approved by Uttarakhand tourism for that particular year; then you have to cancel the tickets which you booked in advance. Hence if any tour operator books it in advance for you, make sure you pay the right amount and confirm the service which is available from Helicopter company for that year.

Delhi to Kedarnath Road trip

We waited for 3 hours as Pawanhans had only 2 helicopters in operation. There is a limit of 80 Kgs weight per person and above it, you have to pay INR 150/Kg extra. Also, make sure you don’t carry extra luggage with you whether you are trekking or riding. The check-in process was smooth just like we travel in flight.

delhi to kedarnath travel guide

I was thrilled with joy as it was the first time I was traveling by helicopter. We boarded the helicopter at 12.30 PM and reached within 10 minutes to Kedarnath passing the views of the valley and trek to Kedarnath below. It was a joyous ride followed by walking to reach the Kedarnath Shrine.

Kedarnath temple trek

With my first footstep, I just took glance at the entire area and the surrounding mountains. The place reminded me of the flood disaster of 2013 which shook the entire nation. Read more about my first glimpse of the Kedarnath town.

delhi to kedarnath travel guide

Kedarnath is a sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and one of the Chardham site among Hindu pilgrims; located in the Himalayas at 11,755 ft near chorabari glacier –the head of Mandakini and surrounded by snow capped peaks.

We first settled into the lodge at Kedarnath as we didn’t want to be in rush for darshan. There was a long queue almost 1 km long for the darshan. We were not in the mood to stand in the queue and decided to stroll around the new settlement. We walked through all the areas and talked with a few locals. It is saddening that such beautiful place was destroyed by the flood. Now everything seems to be normal here. The summer sun was shining, air was crisp, and the clear blue sky was giving moments of a lifetime. We looked at the boulder which saved the temple from the flood water of Gandhi Sarovar. The large boulder diverted the path of water and kept the temple safe.

Kedarnath temple

When it got dark by evening, we visited the temple when there was no queue and offered our prayers. The night was very cold, the air was chilled and we called it for a day! Next-day Morning we flew to Phata and started a further journey for onward destination.

This was all about my visit to one of the twelve jyotirlinga shrine in Kedarnath. The place has a horrible past of the flood but now life seems normal here. I personally felt after visiting such a place, you can generate small revenue for the livelihood of locals who are struggling to recover stories from the past.

Some useful information for Kedarnath:

Where to Stay in Kedarnath:

Accommodation is available at Sonprayag, Gaurikund, and Kedarnath. GMVN has guest houses which are available at all the places. Tents/dormitories are available at Kedarnath ranging from INR 400-600 per night.

Guptkashi has hotels and guesthouses ranging from INR 1000-2000 per night. There is no need to book in advance. The stay comes with basic amenities and doesn’t expect any luxurious amenities here as the life of people is tough here.

Medical Facility at Kedarnath:

Kedarnath is located at a high altitude and many people face breathing problems. The medical facility is available at Sonprayag and Kedarnath.

Food in Kedarnath: There are many shops for food near helipad and in temple complex.

Mobile Network:

I highly recommend carrying BSNL Simcard if you are on char Dham yatra. Reliance Jio and Vodafone work but it gives occasional signaling.

Kedarnath Travel Tips:

  • Kedarnath temple darshan time is morning 5 AM to 8 PM in evening.
  • Get your health check up done before starting the journey (if you have any health problems) as the shrine is located at 11700 ft.
  • Always avoid carrying heavy luggage along with you and make sure to carry only the most necessitated items during the trek.
  • It is always advisable to carry the prescribed medicines along with some general ailments needed for common pains, fever etc.
  • Carry comfortably warm and heavy woollen clothes along with you as the season is always cold there, and at high altitude it is impossible to survive in lighter clothes.
  • As you are travelling in the hilly region; always start early and reach early. Avoid travelling in night.
  • You are not allowed to cross Gaurikund by 5 PM for the trek and you are not allowed to go down after 5 PM from Kedarnath.
  • You can reach to kedarnath by foot OR by mules/palanquins/ Kandi. The charges are according to the weight of the person and it is fixed.

A Complete Guide to Traveling from Delhi to Kedarnath

Budox

The  Kedarnath Temple  is one of the holiest and most revered pilgrimage sites in India. Nestled in the Garhwal Himalayan range in the state of  Uttarakhand , Kedarnath is part of the sacred  Char Dham  and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Each year, millions of Hindu devotees undertake the  arduous journey  from across India to offer prayers at the ancient Kedarnath temple, which is believed to be over 1,000 years old.

For most travelers, the journey to Kedarnath begins at  Delhi , the capital of India that is well-connected to major transportation hubs in Uttarakhand. The Delhi to Kedarnath route passes through several important pilgrimage centers and tourist destinations along the way. This comprehensive guide provides detailed information on how to plan your trip from Delhi to Kedarnath – including the best routes, transportation options, places to visit, tips for the journey, estimated costs and more.

Routes from Delhi to Kedarnath

There are two main routes that pilgrims take to travel from Delhi to Kedarnath by road.

Route 1: Delhi – Haridwar – Rishikesh – Devprayag – Rudraprayag – Guptkashi – Sonprayag – Gaurikund – Kedarnath

This is the most popular route taken by devotees coming from Delhi and other parts of North India. The total road distance is approximately  450 kilometers  and the route takes you through several major pilgrimage hubs like  Haridwar ,  Rishikesh ,  Devprayag  and  Rudraprayag  along the way.

The roads are well-maintained  national highways  (NH) for most part of the journey. From Delhi, you first join NH 334 via Ghaziabad to reach Haridwar. From Haridwar, the route continues on NH 58 to Rishikesh and then joins NH 7 via Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag and Ukhimath to reach Sonprayag. The final 14 km trek to Kedarnath begins from  Gaurikund .

Route 2: Delhi – Meerut – Kotdwar – Pauri – Srinagar – Rudraprayag – Guptkashi – Sonprayag – Gaurikund – Kedarnath

The second alternate route takes NH 334 from Delhi to Meerut and then traverses NH 119 via Najibabad and Kotdwar to join NH 7 at Srinagar via Pauri . This route meets the first route at Srinagar. The total delhi kedarnath distance is slightly higher at  500 kilometers . While the road conditions on this route are decent, some patches may be rough.

Both routes converge at  Sonprayag , beyond which point all vehicles have to be parked at a designated area. From Sonprayag, there is an 18 km uphill trek to  Gaurikund  which is the starting point of the actual 14 km trek to  Kedarnath Temple . No vehicular transport is allowed beyond Gaurikund.

Transportation Options from Delhi to Kedarnath

There are several transportation options available to travel from Delhi to Kedarnath.

  • By Train  – Take an overnight train from Delhi to Haridwar or Rishikesh. From there you can continue your onward journey via road.
  • By Bus  – Regular state-run and private buses ply from Delhi to Rishikesh/Haridwar daily. From there, smaller buses connect to Sonprayag.
  • By Air  – Take a flight from Delhi to Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun which takes around 1 hour. From Dehradun, travel by road to Sonprayag.
  • Self Drive  – Hire a car and do a Delhi to Kedarnath self-drive road trip over 10-12 hours with overnight halts. Parking is available at Sonprayag.
  • Charter Helicopter  – Helicopters can be chartered directly from Phata or Agustmuni to Kedarnath, saving travel time. However, this is an expensive option.

For foreigners and travelers coming from outside North India, air travel to Dehradun and then proceeding by road is the most convenient option. Trains and buses take very long coming from other metros like Mumbai or Bangalore.

The temple closes during winters from November to April due to heavy snowfall in the region. During this time, the Kedarnath deity is shifted to Ukhimath temple.

How to reach Kedarnath from Delhi – All you need to know for your Kedarnath trip

Kedarnath Temple

Are you finally taking the plunge & planning a trip to Kedarnath from Delhi? Great! I have recently taken the trek & was highly disappointed when I couldn’t find anything straightforward on how to reach Kedarnath from Delhi . So, today I would love to share my trip to Kedarnath from Delhi and everything else you need to know about the trip.

Don’t miss my Rishikesh travel guide!

Kedarnath temple.

Kedarnath is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in India . Located at 11755 feet (3500m) in Uttrakhand , Kedarnath not only has religious values but also offers breathtaking views. Every year from May till late September, Kedarnath welcomes millions of tourists as it’s literally cut off from the rest of India due to heavy snowfall.

In 2013, a tragedy struck the valley and everything but the temple was destroyed. Thus the extreme religious value of the temple of the Hindu God – Lord Shiva. Post the tragedy, the government has started a new route for the temple which is an 18 km trek via steep mountains.

Delhi to Kedarnath trip

Kedarnath is almost 300 kilometres from Delhi and takes as much as 10 hours by road without any stoppage. The Route followed is –

The 18 km trek starts from Gaurikund which can take up to 6 hours by pony and 10 hours by trek depending on your fitness. So, I will share how to plan your Delhi to Kedarnath trip with the ways how to reach Kedarnath from Delhi

How to reach Kedarnath from Delhi?

How to reach your destination is the first question that pops up during your travel planning . For road trips, this is the part which stresses me out. So while planning this trip, my entire family sat down and we listed the options.

How to pick which way can we reach Kedarnath from Delhi? Keep reading to know details ⬇️

Driving  .

For our Kedarnath trip, our initial planning on how to reach Kedarnath from Delhi, driving through the alluring mountains of Uttarakhand was our first option. Your mind must wander to how tough is the drive, is it safe. It’s not a tough drive , and you might not even need a driver. We hired a driver and regretted it the moment we reached Phata. Why? Because the roads are pretty smooth and it’s not one of those difficult road trips we had. Also, if four people are travelling & you’re taking a sedan or hatchback, I’d say No to the Driver, it can get uncomfortable for such a long mountainous drive.

Hiring a Cab?

Not interested in driving? The better solution is to hire a cab preferably an SUV . But, hiring a cab from Delhi to Kedarnath is insanely expensive . The cab operators charge 5000₹ for each day with a minimum 5-day tour. This is something in particular to the drive for dhams in Uttarakhand, which I personally believe is taking advantage of tourists. When hiring a cab for any other location, all these operators charge is the standard rate – 10₹ per km for a sedan and 14-15₹ per km for an SUV. We ignored this option ❌

The Alternative?

Hire a car from Zoomcar , they charge a decent price (10-12k for hatchback/sedan) for self-drive cars. You may hire a driver separately.  This put together will cost far less than hiring a cab from a local cab operator. Saves money and you get to enjoy the journey without hassles.

Public Transport

Public transport comes to our rescue when we don’t want to drive or hire a cab. As it’s a long journey, it’s best to break your journey at Haridwar or Rishikesh. Enjoy a peaceful day at the bank of the Ganges river and soak in the spiritual atmosphere of the town. There’s also a registration counter at Rishikesh for Kedarnath, which is not mandatory but recommended . This registration helps the government to track the number of visitors. So, don’t forget to register next to the bus stand in Rishikesh.

  • Train – You can opt for a train from Delhi to Haridwar or Rishikesh. Have a proper night’s sleep before proceeding to a long road trip ahead for the next day.
  • Bus – The bus service from Delhi to Haridwar and/or Rishikesh is excellent with high frequency. I’d suggest taking a Volvo for beating the heat if you’re going in the summer months of May-June.

How to proceed with the journey from Haridwar/Rishikesh to Kedarnath?

There are again two options to reach Kedarnath from Haridwar or Rishikesh. You can hire a cab from a local cab operator and proceed with further journey comfortably. Bear in mind, these are not cheap considering peak season and only a few months for their business to flourish.

The second option is to take a bus from the main bus stand of Haridwar or Rishikesh . There are no/fewer options for a Volvo bus, so this is the least comfortable way to reach Kedarnath. Needless to say that the twists & turns with immense heat till Rudraprayag will make your journey harder. Also, the buses drive sometimes rashly, which may not be ideal for cautious people.

Options for Breaking the Journey?

  • Haridwar

The closest location from Delhi on the way to Kedarnath is Haridwar. The land of the Ganges and the religious environment here will mesmerize you. The overnight stay here allows you to visit the temples and the famous morning/evening aarti of the Ganges. It’s recommended by the Hindu religion to take a dip in the Ganges to filter out your sins. Keep in mind, the river bed tend to be extremely crowded in peak season & on weekends. Various hotels & hostels are available here and some at reasonable rates.

A famous tourist destination near Delhi , known for its whitewater rafting and the Ram and Laxman Jhoola (Bridge). The advantage of stopping here is that you get to register yourself for the Kedarnath Trek and also indulge in adventure activities. The room rentals are nominal and hostels are also available for solo travellers , Rishikesh is a perfect pit stop. And when in Rishikesh, the iconic Beatles Ashram shouldn’t be missed.

  • Devprayag

Devprayag is a name unknown to many but is the birthplace of the Ganges. It’s a place where two rivers – Alaknanda and Bhagirathi – merge to become one. The best part of this confluence is that the rivers of two different shades and genres – one clean and the other muddy – amalgamate into the one we know as The Ganges. You can halt for a night here, see the merging from up close and start the journey early morning the next day. Albeit bear in mind, this is not a hill station, and the temperature here is soaring too in the months of May to July.

Devprayag

This is not the same Srinagar in Kashmir, which I have had people ask me 😉 It’s a small town in Uttarakhand but well-developed as to other villages we encountered on our way. Rent a room here, preferably an AC room (as it’s hot here!) and stay overnight. Fill up the petrol tank if you’re driving, take out cash from numerous ATMs here and pack some more snacks for the next part of the journey. Filling up the tank will be a good option as sometimes there is a shortage of petrol near Kedarnath. We had to skip at least 3 petrol pumps and had to wait in queue for more than 30 minutes at the fourth one.

  • Rudraprayag

Rudraprayag is another small town & developed like Srinagar. If you plan to visit Badrinath as well, it’s best to hire a room here. It’s a common juncture which divides the route between Kedarnath & Badrinath.

Your guide beautifully captures the essence of what seems like a transcendental journey. The details on reaching Gaurikund and the subsequent trek to Kedarnath are both informative and enchanting. I appreciate the inclusion of alternative modes of transportation like the helicopter services – it adds a layer of accessibility to this spiritual odyssey. The caution about staying informed on travel restrictions and weather conditions shows a genuine concern for the well-being of fellow travelers. Kedarnath is undoubtedly a destination that calls for both physical and spiritual preparedness, and your guide navigates this path splendidly.

Very helpful tips ! Thank you very much for sharing with us 😀

I think you have done a fantastic job preparing anyone for a trip from Delhi to Kedarnath. If we were to take this trip, we might try driving ourselves as it sounds like a lovely ride and a hired river isn’t needed. Thank you for your tips.

Shivani, this is really incredible. All these alternatives for transport will really help the travellers of all interests. And I agree with the break journey. Rudraprayag and even Guptkashi are beautiful places to explore.

Thanks, so glad you liked the options 🙂

Wow. This comes on time. I’m planning on visiting India next year and I was looking for some places to visit. Kedarnath looks nice. Thanks for sharing how to get there.

Thank you, nice to know you’re visiting India, and you liked the post.

Wow thats so exciting that you got to visit the ‘birthplace’ of the Ganges. And its incredible the stark difference between the clarity of the two rivers.

Yeah it really was amazing to see the difference.

Such a nice detailed guide. I want to go to Kedarnath for it’s natural pristine beauty but it pains me to see so much of development on the riverside blocking the view.

Yeah you should visit, it’s incredibly beautiful.

Thank you for writing this helpful post! Since I’m not a great driver (and hate driving), I would use public transport. I’m glad that this is an option as well. I didn’t know that you had to register so that the government can track the number of visitors. Is that a common thing to do?

Yes, registration is required here in North India, especially in the major religious places because they usually attract millions of tourists. It can be useful in case of any mishap.

very informative & nicely written 👍

Wow, I don’t know if I prefer driving or public transportation because the stops along the way sound awesome, especially Devprayag.

Yeah, it’s a unique place 🙂

  • You can take a break from your travels by staying at the important rest stations along the way, including Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, and Rudraprayag.

When to Plan Your Road Trip

The Kedarnath Yatra is best conducted during the summer and winter. Therefore, April through June and September through October are the best times to travel. For outdoor activities, Kedarnath Temple is still in superb shape. In both the summer and the winter, the temperature is constantly warm. Booking a visit during the monsoon season is not advised since in some areas, heavy rainfall could cause landslides and floods. Due to the terrible weather and constant snowfall the rest of the year, the temple is only accessible for six months of the year. During the winter, the god moves to the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, where followers can go to seek blessings.

The Road Route

Delhi and Kedarnath are separated by a 450-kilometer drive. From Delhi to Kedarnath, there are two alternative roads you can take, and there are several well-known tourist destinations and pilgrimage sites you can visit along the way. You can take a taxi or drive from Delhi to Kedarnath. You will travel from Delhi to Gaurikund, where the walk to Kedarnath begins. The next step is to either hire a pony or palki or hike the last 18 km to Kedarnath Temple. Let’s us now see more details on the two routes and the condition of the roads below;

Condition of the Road – You’ll be using well-constructed national highways. The trip from Delhi to Rishikesh is simple, after which the hilly area begins. Despite the possibility of some rough sections, there are proper visitor sign boards that make driving uncomplicated.

Delhi, Ghaziabad, Khatauli, Najibabad, Kotdwar, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Guptkashi, Sonprayag, and Gaurikund are the stops that make up Route 2. You’ll travel from Delhi to Kedarnath along the Meerut-Pauri National Highway. Three of the many tourist sites along this road include the NH 34, NH 534, and NH 7. Essential Points during the Journey

There are a few crucial considerations to keep in mind as you prepare to travel from Delhi to Kedarnath, whether by flight, train, or road. The list is as follows:

Kedarnath – How to plan a trip [Complete Travel Guide]

Shefali Joshi

Kedarnath is a divine Hindu settlement situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the Char Dhams located in the Himalayas, and is situated at an astounding height of 3584 meters above sea level near the head of Mandakini River.

The Kedarnath temple lies amidst the majestic snow-capped Garhwal Himalayan ranges and is thronged by thousands of tourists and pilgrims each year. Also, the Kedarnath trek is stunningly beautiful and quite eclectic, even in the trekking circuit.

Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath Closed for Winters

Famous for the ancient shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, it offers a calm atmosphere with a beautifully painted backdrop thanks to the rhododendron woods, snow-covered mountains, and splendid sights of nature. An amalgamation of devoutness and adventure is what makes it incomparable. A MUST VISIT for one and all.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Kedarnath

Kedarnath literally means the Lord of the field, and it is so called because the “crop of liberation” grows here. While it is not certain who constructed the temple or when! One of the earliest references of Kedarnath is in the 7th or 8th century. It is also believed that Adi Shankara died near the sanctuary.

History & Mythology

It is believed that post the battle of Kurukshetra, Pandavas went on a journey to Banaras in order to repent killing their own and seek blessings from the Lord. But, Shivji wanted to avoid meeting with the brothers, and thus, took solace in Guptakashi.

However, Pandavas were relinquishing in their search for the Lord and when they found him, Shivji decided to take the form of buffalo so that they couldn’t recognize him. Now, when Shivji saw the Pandavas approaching closer, he wanted to hide even further.

Thus, He took the decision to also become invisible by way of going underground. However, brother Bhīma tried hard to stop him from leaving by holding on to the legs and tail of the bull. Unfortunately, the Lord dived and evaporated at that place leaving behind his hump which is now worshipped at Kedarnath Temple.

It is however believed that through cosmic energy, the Pandavas were exempted from their sins and Shivji informed that from then onwards He would be present in Jyotirlinga form at Kedarnath.

Located in the Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is the most remote of all Chota Char Dham sites. Situated near the Chorabari Glacier – the source of the Mandakini river, Kedarnath is flanked by snow-capped peaks – most prominently the Kedarnath mountain (6,940 mts) and the Kedar Dome (6,831 mts). Located at a distance of 223 KM from Rishikesh, the town is built on a barren stretch of land on the shored of the river.

The town unfortunately suffered extensive destruction during 2013 due to flash floods caused by torrential rains in Uttarakhand. The temple magnificently survived the harsh calamities!

In line with the Himalayan weather, Kedarnath experiences cool summers while the winters are extremely difficult and harsh. Summer is ideal for all sight-seeing, temple visits and experiencing nearby attractions as well. The average temperature is around 17 degrees in the summer.

Monsoon months are difficult and the area has suffered extreme rainfall many times, particularly in 2013. Monsoon weather is around 12 degrees. Winters are cold, complex and inhabitable. The palki of Lord Kedarnath is transferred to its winter abode near Guptakashi – Ukhimath from November to April. Weather in this season is always in the negative!

What to do in Kedarnath

Given that Kedarnath is a religious destination, clearly the centermost attraction are places with mythological connotations.

Kedarnath Temple

Enveloped in the mighty Garhwal Himalayas, the Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath Temple is among the 275 temples of Paadal Petra Sthalams (the most powerful Shiva temples in the world) and is also the most important among the Panch Kedars.

With fresh air synonymous with the hills and stunning views that you have to earn – you will lose all sense of time here! For thousands of year, this place has been worshipped and the energy of the region is that of positivity, hope and beliefs for the future.

Inside the temple, you’ll be greeted with a small hall with images of Parvati as well as the Pandavas. The hall is decorated with statues of Krishna, Pandavas, Draupadi, Virbhadra and many other deities! There is a conical rock inside the temple which is worshipped as the Sadashiva (forever Shiv).

Made from grey stones which are interlocked with the use of iron clamps – the temple is truly striking in the backdrop of Himalayas.

Gandhi Sarovar

Gandhi Sarovar is a small crystal clear lake, also known as Chorabari Tal. This is so because it is situated on the mouth of Chorabari Bamak glacier. Gandhi Sarovar lies on the foot of Kedarnath and Kirthi Stambh peak at an astounding altitude of 3,900mts above sea level. The lake comes after completed further 4 KMs trek from Kedarnath Temple.

Kalimath is a religious place located on the banks of Saraswati river. Located at a height of 1800 mts, Kalimath is one of the 108 Shakti Peeths in India. Kalimath lies on lap of nature offering salubrious and divine environment. Goddess Kali Temple is located in Kalimath. Legends believe that after killing Raktbeej, Kali Goddess went underneath the ground at this place!

Bhairav Temple

Bhairavnath Temple or Bhairon Baba Mandir is situated south of the Kedarnath temple on the eastern hill of the lofty Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Bhairav – the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with destruction and devastation. The temple offers some stunning views of the Himalayas and it is a beautiful portion of your journey to Kedarnath!

Shankaracharya Samadhi

Adi Shankaracharya was a philosopher, credited with unifying and establishing the main thoughts in Hinduism. At the age 32, he decided to attain moksha at Kedarnath and merged under with the land near the Kedarnath Temple. The samadhi is situated right behind the temple.

What to do around Kedarnath

There is so much to explore around the Kedarnath Temple. So, remember to keep some time at hand to truly immerse yourself into the experience!

Vasuki Tal Lake

Vasuki Tal is a high glacial lake situated at an impressive altitude of 14,200 feet above sea level near Kedarnath Dham. One can spot Brahma Kamal and other Himalayan flowers blooming around the placid lake, making for some spectacular views.

Ideally, I would suggest you complete the route in the day time itself, and spend the night at Kedarnath! The trek distance from Kedarnath temple is 8 KMs, initial 3-4 KMs is easy before the ascend begins. The icy Vasuki Tal is just 900 meters downhill from Vasuki top.

Guptkashi is situated 47kms before the holy shrine of Lord Shiva, Kedarnath. It is located on the route to Kedarnath on a ridge on the west side of the Mandakini river valley at an elevation of 1,319mts above sea level.

Guptkashi is a religiously important town of Uttarakhand as it houses ancient temples like Vishwanath temple and Ardhnareshwar temple. A highly revered attraction, Manikarnika Kund is where two streams of the Ganga and Yamuna meet.

Kedarnatha Trek

Kedarnatha trek is in one of the most significantly religious areas, especially in the Hindu Mythology. The Temple of Lord Kedarnatha (Shivji), which sits at the base of the summit, has stood the test of time and is revered amongst spiritual believers.

Millions of pilgrims move mountains to offer their prayers and seek blessings of the Hindu Deity each year. The temple itself lies at the base of the Kedarnath Peak, facing the Kedar Parvat. A beginner level trek, Kedarnath is especially beautiful in the winter months.

The Chota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand is the four abodes of holy shrines – Badrinath , Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri . All four of these temples are situated within the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The prominence of the Charm Dham Yatra is immense amongst Hindus.

Moreover, it is believed that every Hindu should do Char Dham Yatra at least once in their lifetime. The Great Reformer and Philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya, gathered together these Holy Pilgrimage places into a spiritual circuit around the 8th century.

Generation followed generations and hundreds of thousands of devotees have kept up the tradition of covering these pilgrimage spots every year. Thus, it is very common to complete the circuit in one religious pilgrimage!

Best places to stay near Kedarnath

There is a huge government-run tented colony along with cottages as well as rooms run by GMVN. These are sufficient to home more than a thousand pilgrims and visitors. Also, there are hotels, guest houses, and Dharamshala as well.

A lot of folks have started taking the journey via helicopters and thus stay locations can be Phata, Rampur, Gaurikund, Sitapur etc.

Best places to eat

Unfortunately, the only option for decent food here is the food stalls and roadside dhabas. Food available is mostly north Indian cuisine. Of course, given the highly revered place in Hinduism that Kedarnath holds, it should come as no surprise that alcohol and non-vegetarian food is not served/ is prohibited.

Delhi to Kedarnath (via Lansdowne and Rishikesh)

Jungle Chatti

Photo of Delhi to Kedarnath (via Lansdowne and Rishikesh) by Shashank Kulshrestha

Kedarnath is one of the most special places for me. Being the land of Lord Shiva between unexplored and wild mountains, this place has its own feel and I've never felt the freshness anywhere which I felt in Kedarnath. Though Kedarnath is still incomplete for me, I'll tell you why in this blog so that you can avoid the mistakes I made.

Also, the price shown about the trip is for 4 people as we went there with our petrol car which gave about 12 Kmpl of mileage. Also, we covered Landowne and Rishikesh during the trip. You can visit Kedarnath via Bus and I'll be telling you all the expenses and how you can visit Kedarnath from Delhi exploring everything that lies on the way.

Delhi to Lansdowne

2 routes are available for reaching Kedarnath from Delhi. One goes via Rishikesh and the second goes via Lansdowne. Well, the drive from Delhi to Kedarnath is 467 Km long and takes about 15 hours if you drive continuously which is totally impractical.

Suggestion : Rishikesh and Lansdowne are popular for weekend getaways from Delhi , so if you are planning a weekend trip, consider these two.

If you see on Google Maps, It’ll show you the route via Ghaziabad which is about 493 Km, Just divert the route via Bijnor and you’ll be on a shorter route which is 467 Km. After almost 5 hours of drive, we reached Kotdwar and this was the first time we witnessed mountains on this trip to Kedarnath.

We took a little break after driving 5 Km ahead of Kotdwar.

Kotdwar - Lansdowne Road

First Break as soon as we started drive on Mountains...

We booked windsor cottages for our stay on Day 1. Cottages were really nice, staff was helpful and friendly, and they also provide adventure games in the cottage area for additional charges. What I love about Windsor cottages was the taste of food. It was unexpectedly good. Location is a bit off-track from the main city and for parking I would suggest you to leave your car on the road just in front of the Entry Gate of Windsor Cottages.

Windsor Cottages

So, we checked in, had a quick meal, took a little rest and then left for visiting Bhull Taal and Sunset point. Lansdowne is a peaceful hill station with no excessive crowd and not many points of attractions. It stands unexplored even today. Google Maps was almost of no use and we reached bhulla taal and sunset point by asking the route from people there.

Bhulla Tal, Lansdowne

Sunset Point is not such a good place to visit. But, bhulla taal was a nice place and we enjoyed boating there in peace of the mountains. Some 400 Rupees was the ticket for 4 people for Bhulla Taal. It is managed by the cantonment members of Lansdowne. So, we came back to the cottage after visiting Bhulla Taal and Sunset point and spent the evening watching sunset.

Lansdowne to Sonprayag

Next day in the morning at about 7:30, we left for Sonprayag from Lansdowne. Distance we need to cover today was about 210 Km and it’ll be taking a lot of time to reach there as the road to Sonprayag is not so good after Rudraprayag.

Road from Lansdowne to Srinagar is really beautiful and you can stop for a break in Srinagar as you’ll get many food stores over there. In the morning, the drive from Lansdowne to Srinagar was really refreshing for us as the road is well built and offers scenic views at every corner of the route.

Real struggle started once we reached Rudraprayag, Highway for Kedarnath lying under Chardham Yatra Project is under construction and it many times a year the road faces landslides which is a major reason behind delay in completion of the road project. There was a section where a particular section of road of about 200 meters got removed from the mountain with the landslide. So, they diverted the route between the river with stones.

We drove at around 40 kmph for a while but as the road seems to be similar for a long time, we slightly increased the speed and managed to save time. It becomes noisy driving on a bad road, but we needed to reach there before night so we continued the drive at a little higher speed than 40 kmph.

Dhari Devi Temple

Dhari Devi Temple, Rudraprayag

Photo of Dhari Devi Temple, Silla, Uttarakhand, India by Shashank Kulshrestha

Dhari Devi temple has an important place in the history of Kedarnath Floods. On june 16 the idol of Dhari Devi was uprooted from the temple in Srinagar for a hydel-power project. After a few hours of removal of the idol from the ancient temple, Cloudburst hitted Kedarnath Valley which resulted in Flood and mass destruction in the valley.

Dhari Devi is located in the middle of the river. It was a nice place to visit before Kedarnath and the view of the river was quite scenic from the temple. So, I suggest you visit the temple before visiting Kedarnath.

Right after Dhari Devi Temple, we continued our journey towards Sonprayag where we’ll be spending the night and continue for Kedarnath on Day 3 of this Delhi to Kedarnath road trip.

Waterfall near Phata on Sonprayag Road.

Photo of Phata, Uttarakhand, India by Shashank Kulshrestha

As soon as we crossed Guptkashi, the chilled breeze, tall mountains, green landscape, and a waterfall welcomed us. The quality of air was so clean and the weather was so good that you can literally feel the difference.

In Sonprayag, you need to park your vehicle in the parking premises . Charge for parking is 100 rupees per day as I remember. Let one person go upstairs and look for the hotel. Well, I won’t call them hotels. These are basically arrangements for stay, seems like people converting their homes in room rentals during the tourist season. They charged us 2000 for 4 people in 1 room.

Photo of Sonprayag, Uttarakhand, India by Shashank Kulshrestha

You need to buy hot water for a bath in the morning. There are food stalls arranged by people and food they offer is quite easy to digest and less of spices. Most of the time we ate Maggi, Aloo Paratha, Dal Rice, and similar lite stuff and spent our time. Also, food is not at all costly anywhere on the Route from Lansdowne to Kedarnath.

Sonprayag to Kedarnath

On the Day 3 of the trip, we left for Kedarnath at around 6:30 in the morning. You need to take a yatri ticket for Kedarnath which we recommend you to take after you reach Sonprayag on Day 2 before 5 PM. In the morning of Day 3, if you go to take the permit you’ll be wasting a lot of time.

Mandakini River in Sonprayag

Photo of Sonprayag, Uttarakhand, India by Shashank Kulshrestha

All the people first need to reach Gaurikund from where the trek to Kedarnath starts. You need to get a tourist vehicle from Sonprayag which will take you to Gaurikund and the charge is just 20 rupees per person. The queue for getting the vehicle is usually long to leave as soon as you can in the morning to avoid the long queue. We wasted around 2.5 hours standing in the queue.

Long Queue for Vehicle towards Gaurikund

Photo of Sonprayag, Uttarakhand, India by Shashank Kulshrestha

Once you reach Gaurikund, make sure to buy a raincoat for everyone or you can bring the raincoat along with you. Rain can strike anytime in this region and this is what we missed. We forgot to bring a raincoat with us and got stuck as rain striked after 6 km of trek. Many people like us stuck on the trek for not having a raincoat.

Trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is about 16 km which can be a bit difficult for aged people. The trek route is well built by the authorities and one can easily do the trek by taking proper halts in the middle and eating lite stuff.

Photo of Gaurikund, Uttarakhand, India by Shashank Kulshrestha

As soon as we reached Jungle Chatti, rain started and we somehow continued to trek without a raincoat wishing that the rain would stop soon. But, it didn’t happen and it kept raining heavily. So, after trekking for a total of 6 Km, we decided that we cannot do the trek without the raincoat and there were no shops for buying it. So, we took some time and made the final decision to head back. It was snowing at the temple and we all were wet due to the rain. Continuing to reach the temple must have made us fall ill. So, we decided to come back next year in 2020. Well, you all know how 2020 is going on. So, we missed it this year too.

Bhimbali Kedarnath Trek

Well, for all those reaching the temple, you’ll witness the extreme beauty of the mountains as you reach near the temple and the trek worth the efforts. Temple gets closed early in the evening so you may visit the temple the next morning. You’ll be getting stay arrangements near the kedarnath base camp. There are GMVN cottages, tents, private homes, and other places where you can stay and the price will be quite similar or a bit more than what you paid at Sonprayag.

Kedarnath to Sonprayag / Rudraprayag

Once you visit the temple, spend a couple of hours in Kedarnath Valley and then head back to Gaurikund. Again, you need to stand in the queue to get the vehicle for Sonprayag at the same charge of 20 rupees per person.

We continued our journey in the evening towards Rudraprayag and we reached there by 11 PM. I suggest you spend the night in Sonprayag and continue in the morning for Rishikesh. The roads are not so good but if you are confident over driving at night on wet roads in the mountains then you can continue your journey towards Rudraprayag and spend the night there.

Rudraprayag

Photo of Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, India by Shashank Kulshrestha

Rudraprayag is the meeting point of river Alaknanda and Mandakini. We continued our drive to Rishikesh in the morning and took a little halt at Rudraprayag view point. From Rudraprayag View Point, you can see the confluence clearly and take some pictures.

The next stop we took a break at was Devprayag which is quite close to RIshikesh. Devprayag is the confluence of river Alaknanda, Saraswati, and Bhagirathi that takes the name of River Ganga which you see ahead in Rishikesh and Haridwar and beyond.

Now, we continued towards Rishikesh. The drive from Devprayag to Rishikesh was a good experience as we drove along the river Ganga. As I’ve already been to Rishikesh three times, we decided not to spend the night in Rishikesh and continue for Delhi. You can spend the night at Rishikesh if you want. It’ll be a good experience. We were running out of time as I had some work to do in Delhi, we rushed to Delhi instead stopping in Rishikesh. Although, we took a little 1.5 hours break in Rishikesh.

Lakshman Jhula, Rishikesh. Someone is enjoying ice-cream...

Photo of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India by Shashank Kulshrestha

So, we reached Delhi back at around 3 AM in the morning.

Cost for 4 people for this trip will be around 22000 for you, we did it in just 18000 as we didn’t take a break at Kedarnath and Rishikesh. Main expense was the vehicle’s fuel which cost around 6000 and rest was food and stay expenses.

Take enough time to acclimatize: It is important to acclimatize properly to avoid altitude sickness. Plan for a rest day at Kedarnath or on the way up to Gaurikund.

Plan for extra days: Unforeseen weather conditions or travel disruptions may cause delays. Plan for extra days to avoid rushing through the trek or missing your return journey.

Hire a guide or porter: If you are not an experienced trekker, consider hiring a guide or porter who can help you navigate the trail and carry your backpack.

Check for seasonal closures: The Kedarnath Trek is closed during the winter season (November to April) due to heavy snowfall. Plan your trek accordingly.

Be prepared for emergencies: Carry a satellite phone, emergency contact numbers, and a first aid kit in case of any emergencies.

Check for accommodation availability: There are several options for accommodation on the Kedarnath Trek, but they can fill up quickly during peak season. Book your accommodation in advance.

Carry enough cash: There are no ATMs on the Kedarnath Trek, so carry enough cash to cover your expenses.
