Here’s what critics are saying about Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour :

Does it live up to the hype?

“It gives the audience directly what they want: the ability to experience Eras in a theater with the best seat in the house.” – Kristen Lopez, The Wrap
“The singer promised that she would work to bring the tour to as many people as humanly possible. Overall, that’s exactly what she’s accomplished with Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour .” – Katie Campione, Deadline Hollywood Daily
“The film more than justifies the hype and rather than a rushed cash-in, Swift has gifted her fans a spectacular, lovingly crafted movie that somehow captures everything great about the live show.” – Keiran Southern, Times (UK)
“Serious fans know the setlist by heart: This might be the most spoiler-proof blockbuster of all time.” – Chris Willman, Variety
“Filled with both spectacle and strikingly intimate moments, The Eras Tour is almost too much of a good thing — so many hits, so many memorable set pieces, so many peaks.” – Tim Grierson, Screen International

Does it accurately convey the Eras Tour experience?

“ Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour radiates the same energy that reverberated through the stands each night, complete with the deafening sound of the crowd. Expect to leave the theater with your ears ringing.” – Katie Campione, Deadline Hollywood Daily
“Though it isn’t possible for a movie to take the place of a live concert, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour comes as close as possible, less because of how the movie is captured and more in how fans are going to interact with it.” – Philip Cosores, Uproxx
“At my premiere screening, The Eras Tour played less like a film than an extension of the concert experience: Audience members sang along and danced in the aisle and cheered so loudly I often couldn’t tell where the roar of the crowd onscreen ended and the roar of the crowd in the theater began.” – Angie Han, Hollywood Reporter
“Director Sam Wrench hasn’t really messed with what millions have already seen on stage (or watched via bootleg fan live streams) this past spring and summer, apart from the addition of digital title cards that make it clear to less devoted viewers which ‘era’ is being entered into.” – Chris Willman, Variety
“The runtime sails, especially as it doesn’t have the downtime you’d experience at an actual concert. Swift and Wrench have done something truly special with the Eras film and that is making a colorful celebration of music and, unintentionally, cinema.” – Kristen Lopez, The Wrap
“It’s impressive that The Eras Tour manages to fit in roughly 40 songs in the span of 169 minutes. As with many massive stadium shows, the film can occasionally be exhausting, the prolonged high levels of technical mastery risking becoming monotonous.” – Tim Grierson, Screen International

Poster image for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (2023)

How is the concert itself, for those who missed it (or didn’t try) the first time, live?

“A staggering feat. In the space of one seamless performance, Swift is at turns a playfully eccentric artist, a country star and a genuine pop icon. Yet for all the spectacle, it might be those acoustic songs that linger longest in the memory.” – Kevin EG Perry, NME (New Musical Express
“Whether you were at the concert or seeing it for the first time, Swift put on a show that dazzles, amazes, and enchants… Hits like ‘Shake It Off’ and ‘Cruel Summer’ are present and accounted for, but it’s wonderful to get to see how Swift plays with her audience and plays different characters during the performance.” – Kristen Lopez, The Wrap
“To see all the chapters of her career laid out next to each other is to marvel at how much she’s transformed herself over the years.” – Angie Han, Hollywood Reporter
“Unless you’re a devoted fan, concert films can be a rather dreary experience but the sheer spectacle and energy of the film is enough to convert even the most rabid anti-Swiftite.” – Lina Das, Daily Telegraph (UK)

Does the film offer more than what fans saw live?

“Aside from a few onstage ‘bloopers’ over the closing credits, there’s next to nothing in the way of supplementary material — no interviews, no behind-the-scenes footage, no commentary on what any of this means.” – Angie Han, Hollywood Reporter
“It is nice watching the end credits where Swift fans are shown alongside moments where Swift endures costume malfunctions.” – Kristen Lopez, The Wrap
“Wrench and cinematographer Brett Turnbull don’t avoid the obvious shots, but they also have some wrinkles up their sleeves that startle you out of any sense you’re just watching those concert screens redux.” – Chris Willman, Variety

Should fans who went to the live show still see the film?

“Even if you have been treated to the live show, The Eras Tour still gives everyone in the audience a chance to experience every song from the best seat in the house. You’ll get up close and personal with Swift and also see sweeping shots that put the stage’s stunning visuals on full display.” – Katie Campione, Deadline Hollywood Daily
“Even the best seats in a stadium could provide only so much detail. But on the big screen, the close-ups are glorious, whether zooming in on Swift’s cat-eye makeup outlining her crystal blue eyes, the moss covering her piano and the sweat sticking to her bangs during ‘Champagne Problems’ and her meticulous table setting at the start of ‘Tolerate It.’” – Melissa Ruggieri, USA Today
“You can see literally every sequin and bead. One of several reasons to see Eras in a theater, to take in the detail of the massive undertaking that is Swift’s tour.” – Kristen Lopez, The Wrap
“The big-screen treatment allows fans who have seen the live show a chance to take in details of the performances and production that get easily obscured by the overwhelming nature of live music.” – Philip Cosores, Uproxx
“In IMAX, the film makes excellent use of large-format screens, especially when Wrench shows Swift as a rather small speck in a sea of fans, their cellphone lights illuminating the darkness.” – Tim Grierson, Screen International

Taylor Swift in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (2023)

Is it possible the film is actually better than the live experience?

“ The Eras Tour has enough confidence to let the hard work that went into the tour’s design speak for itself, although Wrench’s camera puts the viewer much closer to the action that most ticket holders would have enjoyed at the actual show.” – Tim Grierson, Screen International
“Obviously, fans get a lot more really, really close face-time with Swift, to the point where they might ask questions like: How is it possible that her hair gets a little moist, but we never see her actually break a sweat?” – Chris Willman, Variety

Is the film missing anything that might disappoint fans?

“The concert film is not a completely unexpurgated version of the show; the first viewers to see the movie quickly realized, to the chagrin of many, that a few numbers were cut, including ‘Cardigan’ and, as seen in the final stretch of the tour, the Haim collaboration ‘No Body, No Crime.’” – Chris Willman, Variety
“It’s sure to come as a disappointment to many, as it did for me, that about one or two songs from each era were sacrificed, likely for the sake of time… The decision is understandable, given the constraints of theatrical releases, but some of the choices felt a bit odd.” – Katie Campione, Deadline Hollywood Daily
“It skips a handful of songs, including ‘The Archer’ and ‘Cardigan.’ But what remains is more than enough to leave the most hardcore Swiftie spent with delight.” – Angie Han, Hollywood Reporter

How The Eras Tour Movie Is Shaping Up For a Historic Box Office Run

T aylor Swift is a business mastermind—the star knows exactly what her fans want and how to deliver just that. High demand for Swift’s history-making Eras Tour essentially broke Ticketmaster, making the ticket-buying process a headache for millions of fans who hoped to see the pop star’s three-hour musical journey through her album eras. But those who missed the live tour will get to see a version of it beginning in October, when the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour hits theaters across the globe. In the lead-up to the film’s release, Swift’s fans have already proven their buying power, breaking advanced global box office records previously held by other musical artists.

Following its opening weekend, an AMC press report says that the film opened domestically with a total gross of $92.8 million, smashing the domestic opening weekend $73 million record that Justin Bieber set in 2011 with his Never Say Never concert film. The movie brought in an additional $30.7 million from the global box office, bringing the total gross to $123.5 million—officially making Swift’s Eras Tour film the biggest global opening weekend for a concert film ever.

EntTelligence estimates that 4.8 million Swifties attended a showing this past weekend and 80% of the audience were women.

this is like the treaty of versailles for stan twitter https://t.co/3iAtkt09fi — yasmin (@ycsm1n) October 12, 2023

Swift self-produced the project and circumvented the traditional Hollywood distribution process by partnering with AMC Theaters rather than a big studio to distribute the movie—a significant feat only possible for an artist of her stature. A superstar like Swift creates entire news cycles that revolve around her extracurricular activities and the condiments she seemingly eats with her chicken tenders.

Here’s everything you need to know about how Swift made her concert film happen—and just how historic it could be at the box office.

How did Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour get made?

According to Variety , Swift initially held meetings with major studios before her tour started to discuss plans to distribute a pro shot of one of her SoFi Stadium shows in Los Angeles. A studio executive who spoke with Variety said they pitched Swift’s camp but stopped hearing from the pop star’s team this summer. At the end of August, Swift announced that the concert movie would be released in mid-October.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

Swift partnered directly with AMC Theaters to distribute the film, Variety reported, though the theater does not have exclusive rights to the distribution. The movie will also be released in Cinemark and Regal theaters in over eight thousand movie theaters around the world. Swift put her own money into the movie, according to The New York Times , which reports it “cost Ms. Swift roughly $15 million to make.

Swift is expected to “collect an additional $60 million overseas — at a minimum — over the weekend,” according to the Times .

The deal between Swift and AMC Theaters is lucrative for both parties as they cut out the studio middlemen. According to Variety , “Swift’s camp will receive roughly 57% of ticket sales, with theaters keeping the remaining revenues and AMC taking a small distribution fee (much less than what studios would have charged). As for exhibitors, many feel it’s a generous deal, noting that Marvel movies receive roughly 65% of box office profits.”

How much is The Eras Tour movie expected to earn?

Fans were quick to snag tickets to showings following Swift’s announcement. The Eras Tour concert film has already collected $100 million in advance ticket sales, setting a precedent for what’s to come opening weekend. In an early September press release, AMC Theaters announced Swift broke the record for single-day advance sales, earning $26 million in tickets sold. The previous record was held by Spider-Man: No Way Home , which sold $16.9 million in a single day. According to The New York Times , the concert film is on track to make around $125 million opening weekend in the United States alone. Swift is expected to “collect an additional $60 million overseas — at a minimum — over the weekend.”

While the fervor of the Swifties will carry the movie to unprecedented heights, the pop star did receive an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, which is still on strike, to promote the film. Swift is a member of the SAG-AFTRA union and was granted the agreement because it was produced in compliance with the union’s strike rules.

How do the early projection numbers for The Eras Tour movie compare to other concert films?

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film is already on track to become a global phenomenon. Her advance ticket sales have outgrossed Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never film, which brought in $99 million. This makes it the second highest-grossing concert film ever even before opening, just behind Michael Jackson’s This is It , which grossed over $380 million (adjusted for inflation). At the premiere on Wednesday, Swift announced that the film would be opening a day early in North America due to the demand, which will only increase the size of the opening weekend haul. The film be playing in theaters for at least four weeks, and there’s no telling just how long the film will continue to play given the Swifties’ hunger for any Swift content.

Where might this movie fall in this year’s box office rankings?

After a pandemic-induced decline, audiences are returning to the movies in droves, especially when some movies as advertised as a mass cultural event not to be missed. Last year saw mega-hits like the Tom Cruise-led Top Gun: Maverick and James Cameron’s return to Pandora with the Avatar sequel , the former grossing over $1.5 billion worldwide and the latter becoming the third highest grossing movie of all-time with a global worldwide haul of $2.3 billion.

This year has seen a few releases find major success at the box office, including the cultural phenomenon Barbie —which currently claims the title of the highest-grossing movie of 2023, raking in over $1.4 billion globally . The No. 2 spot is owned by The Super Mario Bros. Movie , with a worldwide gross totaling over $1.3 billion . Those are high targets to compete with, but based on current projections, the Eras Tour should rank around no. 20 in the 2023 global box office after opening weekend alone—and it's sure to climb higher from there.

Taylor Swift is one of the biggest names in the music industry. Her 2022 album Midnights marked the tenth entry into her impressive discography and kickstarted the beginning of her Eras tour in March 2023. While on tour across the United States and Mexico, the 12-time Grammy winner pleasantly surprised fans on August 31 with an announcement of the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert movie. Tickets went on sale (and immediately sold out) that same day.

AMC theaters have entered into an exclusive agreement with Swift, allowing only their locations in the United States to screen The Eras Tour movie starting October 13. Canadian theaters will screen the movie as well.

Within minutes of theater tickets for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour being released, the AMC app crashed with fans attempting to buy advance tickets for the movie. You can choose to get notified by JustWatch when a streaming release date is announced by heading to Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour and hitting the notification bell.

How long is Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour?

While an Eras Tour concert typically lasts over three hours on average, the official length of the concert movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes. This makes it much longer than previous Taylor Swift concert movies, such as Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour which is 2 hours and 5 mins.

Who is the director of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour?

Grammy-nominated Sam Wrench is the director of the upcoming concert movie. He earned the coveted nomination for directing Billie Eilish Live At The O2 in 2023. Wrench is best known for his ability in capturing the electrifying essence of a live music event, having also worked on  Lizzo: Live in Concert and BTS: Permission to Dance on Stage - LA . He boasts an impressive resume filled with projects from some of the biggest names in the industry including Mary J. Blige, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande.

What records did Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour break?

Taylor Swift just keeps adding to her impressive list of record-breaking achievements. The Eras Tour movie shattered the record for the most money made from advance ticket sales in a single day at AMC Theaters, raking in a whopping $26 million. This surpasses the previous record-holder, 2021's  Spider-Man: No Way Home , by $10 million. Fans achieved this record-breaking feat in just three hours, beating  Avengers: Endgame 's record for the most tickets sold within the first 24 hours.

The Eras Tour movie is expected to have an incredible opening weekend, with a projected range of $100-125 million. The top five movies for the year's opening weekends include Barbie , The Super Mario Bros. Movie , Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania . These range between between $162 million to $106 million, which means the upcoming concert movie has the potential to have one of the best opening weekends of 2023.

Furthermore, the sudden announcement of the movie's release date caused other titles to change their release dates. The Exorcist: Believer , originally slated for the same day, will now premiere a week earlier. Producer Jason Blum playfully tweeted, "Look what you made me do. The Exorcist: Believer moves to 10/6/23.”

What are the other Taylor Swift concert movies?

For those who simply cannot calm down before the release of the movie, there have been a number of projects featuring exclusive access to Swift’s concerts that are available to watch right now. These include The 1989 World Tour Live, which was released on Apple Music in 2015, and 2018’s Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour which is available to stream on Netflix. There were also DVD releases of Taylor Swift: Journey to Fearless in 2010 and Speak Now World Tour – Live the following year.

Swifties alike must ultimately tolerate this Cruel wait with their Gorgeous Style they know Belongs to them. On the Bejeweled side, there are only a few weeks left before they are united by the greatest Love Story on the big screen: Taylor Swift with her Swifties. They are undeniably Ready For It.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour will be released in theaters on October 13, 2023.

When taylor swift: the eras tour movie was filmed.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is an encapsulation of the live show that has taken the world by storm, but people are wondering when the movie was shot.

  • Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour movie showcases her extensive music career in a three-hour-long spectacle for fans to enjoy.
  • Filmed at SoFi Stadium over three days in August 2023, the production team expertly edited multiple shows for seamless viewing.
  • Despite the SAG-AFTRA strike, the film was granted special approval and went on to be incredibly profitable, making over $250 million.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) has landed on Disney+, and the sheer length of the tour can make it unclear where and when the movie was shot. The Eras Tour movie has immortalized the ongoing string of international shows , but it's also adapted and changed since its theatrical run. While Swift's tour began in March 2023, the movie wasn't actually filmed immediately. Instead, the tour itself was allowed to settle into a groove before the cameras started rolling.

As the name suggests, The Eras Tour features songs from almost every Taylor Swift album . The length of Swift's music career has resulted in the show clocking in at around three hours long , meaning fans aren't left feeling shortchanged. Of Taylor Swift's eight documentaries and concert movies , The Eras Tour film is undeniably the one that's proven the most successful and most profitable. However, without the tour itself, the movie wouldn't exist. As such, the production team had to choose which show or shows to capture on film.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie Ending - Why Midnights Is The Final Era

Taylor swift: the eras tour movie was filmed from august 3-5, 2023, filming took place at the sofi stadium..

While The Eras Tour began with two dates in Glendale, Arizona on March 17-18, it wasn't until roughly six months later that the movie was actually shot. Filming began on August 3 and concluded on August 5 . As such, the movie itself is a composite edit of those three shows. However, the consistency of the stage show on each night allows for the on-screen impression of one, seamless performance.

SoFi Stadium is in Inglewood, California, and it was the final venue to be played on the US leg of Swift's current tour.

SoFi Stadium is in Inglewood, California, and it was the final venue to be played on the US leg of Swift's current tour. Although the shoot itself only spanned three days, Taylor Swift proceeded to perform three more times at SoFi Stadium after a one-day break . So, the set of three unfilmed shows at SoFi Stadium began on August 6 and ended on April 9. After that, the next date on The Eras Tour wasn't until August 24 in Mexico City.

Were Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Dating When The Eras Tour Was Filmed?

Their relationship timeline explained..

Swift and Kelce are believed to have started dating in September 2023. If so, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end won't have been present during any of the SoFi stadium shows in California, let alone the three that were filmed. As a result, Travis Kelce isn't referenced or shown at any point in Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour . That being said, Kelce has since attended shows on the tour, and Swift even adapted a line from "Karma" in tribute to him. The lyrics in question were changed to, " Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me ."

How Taylor Swift Filmed The Eras Tour Movie During The SAG-AFTRA Strike

Taylor swift received special approval..

Unlike so many other productions, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour movie was allowed to film during the SAG-AFTRA strike that ran from July to November 2023. The strike in question brought many movies and TV shows to a halt, but most were dramatic, fictional productions. Swift's tour film fell outside of this description as it was a tour film. As such, (Via Billboard ) The Eras Tour movie was granted permission from SAG-AFTRA to go ahead with production under an interim agreement that allowed certain types of movies to be shot.

How Much The Eras Tour Movie Cost To Film & How Much It's Made

Taylor swift's movie made over $250 million at the box office..

The estimated budget for the filming of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour falls somewhere between $10-20 million. At the box office, the tour film made $261.7 million, so there's no denying the movie was incredibly profitable. However, there's still the money made from paid VOD services to consider. In addition, Variety reports that Disney then paid $75m to obtain the rights to stream Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour on Disney+.

The 2 Taylor Swift Songs Still Missing From The Eras Tour Movie (Taylor's Version)

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour broke box office records before it was even released in cinemas. According to Statista , The Eras Tour was already the most profitable concert movie in history prior to its theatrical debut on October 13, 2023. By October 4, the movie had already sold $100 million worth of presale tickets to excited fans. So, the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was seemingly always destined to be a hit.

Is Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour Still On Going?

How many dates are left.

Despite being going for a year already, The Eras Tour is still in full swing. Taylor Swift has many shows left before the enormous international tour ends in December 2024. After a short break of just a few days, The Eras Tour resumes on March 17 in Stockholm, Sweden. Swift's first Swedish date of the tour is one of the overall 69 that remain. So, while Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version ) may capture the glamor of the intricate stage show, it only represents a very small cross-section of the size of the operation.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) is streaming now on Disney+.

Taylor Swift

We are just two weeks away from Taylor Swift hitting the road again for a summer swing of European Eras Tour shows. And, as you may have heard, since the last time she played an Eras show Swift has dropped her fastest-selling album of all-time, The Tortured Poets Department , a sprawling, 31-track collection that has been racking up record after record in its first week.

Matty Healy’s Mom Quips She ‘Wasn’t Aware’ Taylor Swift Put Out a…

Trending on billboard.

While Swift has not commented, on Thursday night (April 25) Swift uploaded a 15-second YouTube Shorts clip in which it appeared that TTPD has, indeed, been slipped into rotation. Cued to the album’s first single, the Post Malone-featuring “ Fortnight ,” it finds Swift singing, dancing and playing piano in what look like Lover and Folklore set-ups, one quick-cut caught a lot of attention. In a brief shot, Swift is seen standing next to a silver railing that eagle-eyed fans quickly surmised was in the shape of the TTPD logo. There was no chill about this news.

“GUYS THE RAILING LITERALLY SAYS TTPD!?!;);$!; ITS THE TTPD LOGO WE’RE GETTING TTPD AT THE ERAS TOUR,” tweeted one Swiftie. Another pointed out that Swift appeared to be wearing the same shoes from the “Fortnight” video in the rehearsal clip and another proved that there is no one in the game better at the long game than Taylor.

“tHIS is what she means when she says she plans easter eggs far in advance. AHHHHH!!!!,” they wrote, noting that another Swiftie spotted that Swift had seemingly teased this new era before the tour even began when she posted an image of a box containing all her different-colored Eras microphones, including a white one that “hasn’t had a place in the show… until now!!!” It was hard to tell if Swift was wielding this white mic in the video because the clip is in grayscale, but that didn’t stop the breathless speculation about what’s next on the singer’s stadium-packing outing.

Check out the Shorts clip and the Easter egg hunt below.

Is Taylor Swift Adding Tortured Poets Songs to the Eras Tour Set List in 2024?

W ith the new album The Tortured Poets Department now out, Taylor Swift fans are wondering if the pop star will be adding a few of its songs to the Eras Tour setlist for the rest of the 2024 concerts. Here's everything you need to know.

Are Taylor Swift's Tortured Poets songs being added to The Eras Tour?

Based on a YouTube short with a few clips of Swift's rehearsals, fans have picked up clues suggesting that she will be adding new songs from The Tortured Poets Department to her 2024 Eras Tour setlist.

On May 9, Taylor Swift will take the stage once again to begin the European leg of her Eras Tour. Her usual concerts last just over three hours with her performing around 45 songs on average. But with The Tortured Poets Department, she has 31 more songs to choose from.

Swift recently added the above video showing moments from her rehearsals. But breaking down the video, fans believe that she teased the addition of a few tracks from The Tortured Poets Department into her upcoming concerts.

TikTok user ‘ Nikkiking23 ' posted the following video presenting a few pieces of evidence suggesting the addition of The Tortured Poets Department songs to Taylor Swift's Paris concert and beyond:

While this isn't confirmed yet, Swift could surprise fans across her European, American, and Canadian tours.

However, since the concerts are already big shows, she could choose to condense a few old songs or even remove them to incorporate the new songs. If this happens, it would be interesting to see how fans react to a change to her setlist.

Will Taylor Swift sing ‘Fortnight' during The Eras Tour 2024 shows?

Fans believe that Taylor Swift hinted at singing Fortnight from The Tortured Poets Department album during The Eras Tour 2024 shows.

Swift hasn’t confirmed whether she will sing The Tortured Poets Department songs during her upcoming shows. However, it's likely for "Fortnight" to be one of the songs she picks, if she chooses to sing new ones.

Fortnight is the lead song of The Tortured Poets Department. Considering that the European tour starts in a fortnight and Swift's above video heavily teases the song “Fortnight,” it's likely that Swift will at least perform this new song in Paris on May 9, and perhaps beyond.

Was Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in Detroit bigger than NFL draft crowds? It's complicated

variety eras tour movie

How does the record-breaking attendance for the 2024 NFL draft on Thursday compare to other peak days in Detroit? It's hard to tell given the crowd estimates are created with different methodologies and geographic boundaries.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour visit to the Motor City last June spanned two days, with two sold-out shows of about 60,000 fans each day at Ford Field. But that is the number of people attending the concert, not the number of people estimated visiting Detroit's business district. All told for just one day Swift was in the city, June 10, nearly 350,000 people flocked to Detroit's Central Business District. Motor City Pride Fest was that day at Hart Plaza, too.

That's higher than Thursday's draft crowd of about 275,000 fans — the largest daily NFL draft attendance on record, according to NFL officials. But 275,000 is the NFL's estimate, which is measured differently over a different geographic area. Magnetometers or metal detectors that fans walk through to enter the draft areas provide real-time crowd estimates, according to an e-mail from an NFL spokesperson.

Swift day data was compiled by the Downtown Detroit Partnership from Placer.ai , a firm that analyses foot traffic data from mobile phones.

The daily estimates include the number of people visiting or working in Detroit's Central Business District − an area bounded by the Lodge Freeway (west), Interstate 75 (north), I-375 (east) and the Detroit River (south). The median number of people visiting or working in the central business district between April 1, 2023 and April 7, 2024 was 102,000; foot traffic was higher at about 122,000 people on weekend days.

Back to the draft

Thursday's 275,000 attendance figure includes fans spanning from Campus Martius Park to Hart Plaza and satellite viewing areas such as the Corner Ballpark (Detroit's former Tiger Stadium). If the draft attendance in Detroit continues at this pace over the weekend, Detroit is on track to break the 600,000 record for total attendance, previously held by Nashville in 2019.

Nashville previously held the NFL draft record for daily attendance, too, with about 200,000 fans in 2019 .

Within the last year, people visited Detroit for a variety of jam-packed concerts, sporting and other events. Pink set a record for a reserved seat concert at Comerica Park , with more than 45,000 fans and 207,955 people in the central business district; Detroit Lions' home games extended into the playoffs ; Taylor Swift, Beyoncé , Metallica and many more brought thousands of people to downtown Detroit.

Where the record NFL draft in Detroit stands in relation will have to wait until the draft is over and more comparable data is available next week.

Howard Jones

A new wave one-stop shop will tour North America this summer when Howard Jones and ABC will be hitting stages across North America with special guest Haircut 100. The full itinerary appears below.

“I’m very excited to be hitting the road with my friends ABC and Haircut 100,” Jones enthused. “Our audiences can look forward to some seriously top tunes night after night!  Bring your celebratory selves to the party.”

Popular on Variety

Of course, the evening will play out like an evening filled with hits from the early days of MTV, when the so-called “Second British Invasion” dominated the channel. Jones’ hits “New Song” and “What Is Love,” and “Things Can Only Get Better” probably segued into or out of ABC’s “Look of Love,” “Poison Arrow” and “Be Near Me” and Haircut 100’s “Love Plus One” and “Fantastic Day.”

All three acts have gone on to other successes, but this tour brings together the songs and sounds that first brought them to fame.

Netflix’s New Film Strategy: More About the Audience, Less About Auteurs

Dan Lin, the streaming service’s new film chief, wants to produce a more varied slate of movies to better appeal to the array of interests among subscribers.

Dan Lin, wearing a suit coat and white shirt, standing in front of a sign for “The Last Airbender.”

By Nicole Sperling

Reporting from Los Angeles

Back in, say, 2019, if a filmmaker signed a deal with Netflix, it meant that he or she would be well paid and receive complete creative freedom. Theatrical release? Not so much. Still, the paycheck and the latitude — and the potential to reach the streaming service’s huge subscriber base — helped compensate for the lack of hoopla that comes when a traditional studio opens a film in multiplexes around the world.

But those days are a thing of the past.

Dan Lin arrived as Netflix’s new film chief on April 1, and he has already started making changes. He laid off around 15 people in the creative film executive group, including one vice president and two directors. (Netflix’s entire film department is around 150 people.) He reorganized his film department by genre rather than budget level and has indicated that Netflix is no longer only the home of expensive action flicks featuring big movie stars, like “The Gray Man” with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans or “Red Notice” with Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson.

Rather, Mr. Lin’s mandate is to improve the quality of the movies and produce a wider spectrum of films — at different budget levels — the better to appeal to the varied interests of Netflix’s 260 million subscribers. He will also be changing the formulas for how talent is paid, meaning no more enormous upfront deals.

In other words, Netflix’s age of austerity is well underway. The company declined to comment for this article.

Now that Netflix has emerged as the dominant streaming platform, it no longer has to pay top dollar to lure auteur filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Alfonso Cuarón and Bradley Cooper. It also helps that some of the big studios are again allowing their films to be shown on Netflix not long after they appear in theaters, providing more content to attract subscribers. The latest list of the 10 most-watched English-language films on the service featured six produced outside Netflix.

Mr. Lin’s predecessor as Netflix’s film chief, Scott Stuber, took the job in 2017, when the company had no track record as a place for original movies. To succeed, Mr. Stuber, who had once been the vice chairman of production at Universal Pictures, spent lavishly on talent, promising filmmakers near-complete creative freedom and hefty budgets. It worked — to an extent. The directors got to make their passion projects, and their films earned Oscar nominations (though few wins.)

In 2021, the streamer hit its apex of production, declaring that it would release a new movie a week.

Mr. Stuber, an affable friend to talent, pushed to get Netflix to embrace the idea of wide theatrical releases. And it was a big coup when he landed the sequels to the box office hit “Knives Out,” in a $465 million deal, which some thought could nod toward a change in direction. It never came to be.

Under Mr. Lin, who once ran production at Warner Bros. and produced such hits as “Aladdin” for Disney and the “It” and “Lego” movie franchises, the aim is to make Netflix’s movies better, cheaper and less frequent. Mr. Lin, who declined to comment for this article, also wants his team to become more aggressive producers — developing their own material rather than waiting for projects from producers and agents to come to them, according to two people familiar with his thinking, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal communications. This approach, the thinking goes, should help them have more say over the quality of the films.

Netflix was reconsidering its pay structure before Mr. Lin’s arrival. Since the company began sharing performance metrics last year, there have been discussions about basing pay for filmmakers and actors on a film’s performance, similar to how the traditional studios reward them when movies perform well at the box office.

Yet a more economical approach to budgets, along with Netflix’s continued aversion to releasing films in theaters, has some producers and agents in Hollywood griping that the streaming service is no longer a top choice when trying to find a distributor for their films.

Several high-profile filmmakers who made movies for Netflix moved on for their next projects. After making “The Irishman” for Netflix, Mr. Scorsese jumped to AppleTV+ for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Maggie Gyllenhaal is making “The Bride” at Warner Bros. after directing her first film, 2021’s “The Lost Daughter,” for the streamer. And Scott Cooper, who directed “The Pale Blue Eye” for Netflix in 2022, is taking his highly anticipated Bruce Springsteen biopic, starring Jeremy Allen White, to 20th Century. (New films by the Netflix loyalists Guillermo del Toro and Noah Baumbach are both in production for the service.)

Netflix recently declined to bid on the rights to a short story that Millie Bobby Brown, a star of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and the “Enola Holmes” films, was attached to, two people familiar with the matter said. It is also no longer moving forward with a film by Kathryn Bigelow based on David Koepp’s apocalyptic novel “Aurora”; the director left the project a few months ago.

Edward Berger — who directed “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which won four Oscars, for Netflix — has been complaining that the service is demanding budget cuts on a film he’s trying to put together with Colin Farrell, according to three people with knowledge of the deal, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the delicate situation.

A spokesperson for Mr. Berger declined to comment.

Shortly after Mr. Stuber left the company, Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, gathered members of the film staff in a conference room and told them that the quality of their movies needed to improve, according to three people with knowledge of the meeting, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal communications. She also indicated that if they weren’t comfortable with moving in a different direction, they might want to consider leaving the company.

One thing that does not appear to be changing anytime soon is Netflix’s strategy regarding theatrical release, a bone of contention with some filmmakers and stars — not to mention theater owners.

“The data from the pandemic is clear that movies released only to streaming don’t get the awareness and pop of a movie that was first released theatrically,” said John Fithian, the former president and chief executive of the National Association of Theatre Owners and founding partner of the Fithian Group, which advises clients on ways to support the cinema experience. “Almost all of the most-watched movies on streaming services are movies that were first released theatrically.”

Yet many in the creative community are rooting for Mr. Lin. With the business consolidating, they are desperate for Netflix to continue buying movies. The hope is that with a renewed focus, Netflix may greenlight movies that the studios would say no to, and provide a home for more romantic comedies and midbudget character studies in Hollywood’s shifting landscape.

An earlier version of this article misstated John Fithian’s former job titles at the National Association of Theatre Owners. He was the president and chief executive, not chairman.
