It’s not only me who is in love with this city, rather every tourist who visits Allahabad once, becomes the admirer of this blessed and flamboyant city. The origin period of Allahabad is as old as the Indian Vedas itself. This spiritual place has been mentioned in many ancient Hindu manuscripts. Earlier known as ‘Prayag’ or ‘The City of Blessings’, Allahabad is one that place in India where culture, religion, politics, economics, and education meet the boasting historical lineage of its own.

The city was renamed as ‘Illahabad’ by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583. Illahabad literally means ‘the garden of Allah’ in Urdu. Later on, it became ‘Allahabad’ form ‘Illahabd’. Allahabad Fort

Allahabad is so magnetic and enigmatic that nobody can resist himself from its mesmerizing allure. Mughal Emperor Akbar was also one of them. He once visited Allahabad and fell head over heels for the centric location and the bewitching charm of the city. What next?? He was an emperor after all. He commissioned a spectacular fort on his favorite place, the Shore of Ganga River, in 1583.  The fort is built in Hindu-Muslim architectural style like all other Mughal structures.

Jodhabai Palace, Akshaya Vat, and Saraswati Kund are the major attractions inside the fort. Outside the fort, there is also a 35 feet tall Ashoka Pillar which accounts the time period of Maurya Empire around 232BC.  The pillar bears several edicts and the inscriptions narrating the life timeline of Ashoka, that’s why it is believed to have had built by Ashoka.  Today, a major portion is under Indian army still, half of the fort is opened for the visitors. It is one of the famous places to visit in Allahabad.

Anand Bhawan

Allahabad has always been the epicenter of politics in India and Anand Bhawan is a testimony of it. It is the ancestral home of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Built by his father and a leading politician of that time Motilal Nehru, Anand Bhawan is a double-storied spectacular mansion decked with imported wooden furniture and numerous artifacts.

Till 1970, it served as the residence of Indira Gandhi thereafter she handed over it to the Indian Government to keep the legacy of Nehru family intact. Soon, it was converted into a museum that showcases a huge range of memorabilia and photos of Nehru family as well as Indian freedom fighters. Definitely a must-visit place if you want to slake your thirst for the history buff. This one of the best places to visit in Allahabad.

Khusro Bagh

Allahabad was an important political center for the Mughals. The city also played a significant role in Mughal history especially for Emperor Jahangir. Khusro Bagh was built by him only in the memory of his son Prince Khusro. Located at the spitting distance from Allahabad Railway Station, Khusro Bagh is actually a walled garden which houses three Mughal Mausoleums.

Prince Khusro, his mother Shah Begum, and his sister Nithar Begum were buried here. Built with yellow sandstones and adorned with appealing carving and motifs, the all three tombs clearly reflect the Mughal architectural style. For an interesting fact, the garden is still well-maintained, so it certainly deserves a visit. Even if you’re not interested in history buffs, must visit this place to give your eyes a visual treat.

Hanuman Mandir

You must have visited hundreds of Hanuman temples in your life, then why I’m telling you to visit a Hanuman Mandir in Allahabad? Well, because this is not an ordinary temple likes others. The temple has a massive reclined idol of Lord Hanuman which is nearly 20 feet long and 8 feet wide. According to Hindu mythology, River Ganga must touch the feet of Lord Hanuman with its water once in a year.

Can you imagine, Hanuman Mandir is nearly 9 km from Triveni Sangam and during rainy seasons, River Ganga comes in full spate and wash the feet of this idol. Sometimes, the temple gets even submerged.  And once it touches the feet of the idol, the water level goes down surprisingly. So, don’t forget to visit this mystic temple and seek the blessing of Lord Hanuman. This is among important places to visit in Allahabad.

Alfred Park or Chandra Shekhar Azad Park

Alfred Park; one of the famous places to visit in Allahabad is the largest the most visited park in Allahabad. The park has statues of Gorge V and Victoria but they are not the reason for the popularity of this park. The park is mainly famous for being an important place during Indian freedom fight and being the death land of freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad.

It is the place where Chandra Shekhar Azad Shoot himself when he had no option left than surrendering. He chose to sacrifice his life rather than falling into the hands of enemies. After the independence, the park was renamed as Chandra Shekhar Azad Park in the honour of his valor and a statue of Azad was also installed. So, visit the park and pay the homage to his devotion.

Swaraj Bhavan

Donated by Motilal Nehru to the Congress Party, the Swaraj Bhavan is situated in the same complex as the Anand Bhavan. Visitors can avail of either the conducted tours or follow the audio visual presentations in each room. Its tranquil ambience attracts tourists from all across the globe and is a must visit for one and all.

Alopi Devi Mandir

According to legend, on the demise of the Sati Mata, her hands fell in the place where the Alopi Devi Mandir, Allahabad now stands. A platform marks the spot which along with a wooden swing is considered sacred and a place of worship. The temple itself is rather small and simple, but it is held in great reverence by the faithful. This place is visited by devotee in large numbers during the Kumbh Mela and the Navratras.

Close to the Alopi Devi Mandir is another small temple dedicated to the Goddess Durga and her nine avatars. This temple also houses a Shivalinga and an idol of Hanuman.

ISKCON Temple

International Society for Krishna Consciousness or ISKCON as it is popularly known established the ISKCON temple at Allahabad in 1995. Although smaller than the huge ISKCON temples of Mumbai,  Kolkata, Delhi and other large cities in India, the temple at Allahabad is no less in providing the calm and serene ambiance that these temples are known for. Housing a Dharamshala for the devotees to stay in, the temple is currently under expansion and renovation. Akshaya Vat

Akshaya Vat located in the Allahabad Fort, is home to the Banyan tree that according to legend stands here since the beginning of time. Claimed to be the oldest tree on earth and finding mention in the religious texts of the Hindus, this Banyan Tree can now only be spotted from a boat when on a river cruise on the Ganges, unless you can get permission from the Commandant of the Ordnance Depot to visit this out of bounds location.

According to text from the Hindu religious books, Akshaya Vat was the only visible sight over the waters, when Lord Narayan caused the earth to flood in order to show his power to Sage Markandeya. Lord Rama, according to the Ramayana, rested under the Akshaya Vat and according to some Jain texts, Rishabha meditated under this tree. The mention of this place in such texts has given credence to the tree and it is considered sacred by the Hindus and Jains.

Best Time to Visit

Because of extreme hotness, Allahabad remains drab during summers. The Ganga also seems calm and dull. So, don’t visit Allahabad in summer. If you want to see the flood of Ganga, visit in rainy seasons. During this time, you have to hire boats even to travel on roads. But if you want to explore “Allahabad thoroughly and want to see the “real Allahabad, visit in January or February. During this time, the Magh Mela which a one-month-long festival takes place and Ganga Ghats are thronged by the worldwide devotees. Taking a dip in Triveni during Magh Mela is believed to have more significance.

How to Reach

Allahabad gave three prime ministers to India. Now you can assume how deep-rooted this city is and how would be the transportation network of it. The rail and road network is well-linked to all major cities of India. Yeah, getting Allahabad by airways is a bit difficult because there is only one flight to Delhi in a day and Allahabad airport is also not connected to all airports in India. Tourist Places to Visit in Allahabad

Officially named as Prayagraj and formerly known as Illahabad, this place is replete with prominent historical places and Destinations. The city itself has found its mention in various holy and sacred Hindu texts like Agni Puran and Manusmriti as the place where Brahmaji had attended a sacrificial ritual. Along with this Lord Ram of Ramayan is also said to have spent some time in an ashram here making it all the more sacred. The entire state is dotted with numerous ancient temples and has seen a long history of empires as well as mythological accounts. Each site here consists of a unique structure which is backed up with a unique story or a legend which makes visiting it completely worth it.

Here are a few places which you cannot afford to miss during your visit to Allahabad:

1. Triveni Sangam

This is probably one of the holiest places in India where three of the most pious rivers converge creating an aura of spirituality and purity. These rivers are Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical river of Saraswati which can be identified with their distinct colour change where Ganga is clear and the Yamuna has a greenish tinge to it. This place is also the site for one of the largest mass Hindu pilgrimage of Kumbh Mela every 12 years along with Ardh Kumbh Mela that takes place every 6 years. Devotees visit this holy center to take a holy dip in its water and you can even hire a boat that will lead you up to the Sangam point and you can savor some of the most panoramic and scenic views of the setting or the rising sun.

2. Allahabad Museum

Established in the year 1931 this is a national level museum which houses some of the most iconic pieces of our history that plays a crucial role in building up the mysterious past of our nation. Set up on display is the largest collection of prehistoric paintings, the colt pistol by which India’s great freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad had shot himself in the head, a display of Gandhi Ji life from birth to his death along with almost 25,000 books which are rare. Along with this, another unique feature here is that the museum is on its way to becoming a self-reliant entity in terms of power generation due to its utilization of solar power system. Other than all this it is also a great place for archaeologists and researchers looking to put together the pieces of the past in a more accurate manner.

3. Khusro Bagh

Spread over an extensive and lush green land of 40 acres this is probably one of the most underrated and offbeat places of attraction in Allahabad which houses the Tombs of Shah Begum, Khusro Mirza, Nithar Begum among other. All these tombs are well preserved and the architectural grandeur here is impeccably ornate and gives off a vibe of some serious opulence. Every inch of these structures from walls, pillar, arches, and even the ceilings are adorned in some of the finest designs which had invoked comparisons between this group of tombs and Fatehpur Sikri by the experts. The architectural brilliance makes it worth a visit during your trip to Allahabad.

4. Anand Bhawan

This iconic landmark in Allahabad had previously served as the residence for the Nehru family and now it has been converted into a historical museum. The Bhawan architecture is simple Hindu style with a minaret on top which adds to its beauty and all of this is set amidst tall green trees and lush neat lawns. This Bhawan was also donated to the Indian government in 1970 by Indira Gandhi in order to turn it into a museum which completely gives the visitors comprehensive information about the past of the influential Nehru family tree since it was transformed into a local headquarter for the Indian National Congress. This is the perfect place if you are looking to gain some knowledge about the past of Indian government.

5. Allahabad Fort

Standing majestically on the banks of the holy river of the Yamuna and close to the Triveni Sangam this legendary fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Allahabad which was built by the Mughal emperor Akbar. One would be able to witness some of the most magnificent views of the surroundings along with the scenic river flowing past it. Although most part of the fort is sealed off to the army (however some part is now open for visitors to the general public) but there is an immortal banyan tree in its premise known as Aksharvat which is worth the visit. There also a number of small temples inside it along with a Patal Koop which attracts a throng of tourists from far and wide especially during the Kumbh Mela.

6. Alfred Park

Spread out lavishly over a lush green area of 133 acres (making it the largest park in the city) and formerly known as Chandra Shekhar Azad Park during the British era, this place was constructed to commemorate the place where our great Indian freedom fighter Azad had sacrificed his life by shooting himself with the last bullet he had after a tussle with the British forces. A number of tourists flock here to pay their respect to this legend. Apart from the historical value the park is extremely well kept and covered with tall and thick green trees. Its location in the heart of the city helps in welcoming a throng of tourists in a daily basis. This place is known for being one of the best places to spend some time with your family among some peace and quiet especially during the summer evenings.

7. Allahabad Pillar

Also referred to as ‘Ashoka Stambh’ this pillar in Allahabad is dated back to the Mauryan Empire of 3rd century BCE. The pillar is an edict which is engraved with inscriptions from Ashoka himself along with the inscriptions by the 17th-century Mughal ruler Jahangir. The inscriptions tell us about the good and charitable deeds done by Ashoka’s queen Karuvaki. The actual location of this structure was in the ancient town of Kaushambi (30 kms from its current place) before and is believed to have been moved to its new and current destination within the Allahabad fort. People should visit this legendary pillar which gives us a view into the past ages and allows you to also paint a picture of the bygone era.

8. All Saints Cathedral

The city was originally named as Prayag or the place of offerings and is revered as one of the most important pilgrim spot for the Hindus in India. The city is a home to a confluence known as the triveni, and is the meeting point of the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers of India. The city is also the second oldest city in India with its origins traced back to the Vedic Period. The city was named to Allahabad or Ilahabad by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1583 which literally means the Garden of Allah in Urdu. The important monuments and buildings inside are the Zanana palace for the women, the Saraswati Koop which is considered as the source of the Saraswati River and a 3rd century BC Ashoka Pillar. It also houses the Immortal tree or Akshayavat which can be viewed from the outside from the southern wall.

3. Khusro Bagh

The walled garden is a home to three mausoleums which are built in the Mughal style of architecture. The three tombs belong to the eldest son of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, Khusaru Mirza and his first wife Shah Begum and his daughter Nithar Begum. The name Khusro Bagh is named after Khusaru Mirza who rebelled against his father leading to his death and his burial along with his family in the three tombs. The three tombs are fine specimens of Mughal arts and architecture and are decorated with stone carvings and motifs.

4. Anand Bhavan

Anand Bhavan was constructed in the 1930’s by the Indian leader Motilal Nehru as the Nehru Family residence. The building was constructed as the former residence of the Nehru Family known as the Swaraj Bhavan was donated to the Indian National Congress. The building was donated to the Indian Government by Indira Gandhi in 1970 and is today a house museum that depicts the life and times of the Nehru family. It also houses the Jawahar Planetarium which was built in 1979 and is a must visit.

5. All Saints Cathedral

All Saints Cathedral was built by the British and was consecrated in 1887 and was completed 4 years after. The church displays a striking 13th century Gothic revival architecture and is 31 meters in height. The massive church building encompasses an area of approximately 1250 square meters and is one of the most prized buildings from the colonial India. The complex also contained a memorial to Queen Victoria and functions as a lantern tower.
