Korčula’s history

Korčula’s history has notable milestones, starting with the Psephism (Lumbarda decree, 4th century B.C.), the oldest inscribed stone fragment in this part of Europe, through to the Statute of the town and island of Korčula of 1214 recording the organization and continuity of 800 years of civic society. There are three brotherhoods (society of laymen) dating from 1301, the Cathedral of St. Mark and numerous churches, palazzos, mansions, and streets built to an urban plan along an architectural form of a fish bone.

Residents within the walls of the old town live in 'an open-air museum', where the following venues are open to visitors: St. Mark’s Cathedral, Abbatial Treasury, Town Museum, House of Marco Polo, Icon collection in the House of the Brotherhood of All Saints, and Revelin Tower.

Visit Croatia

The sixth-largest island in Croatia, Korcula is 20 miles long and rather narrow, between 4 and 5 miles wide on average. This island is known for its dense forest and the ancient Greeks called the island Black Korcula (Kerkyra melaina) for this reason.

Korcula

The main resorts are Korcula Town (people call it “Little Dubrovnik” because of its medieval squares, churches, palaces and houses, looking not too dissimilar to the real Dubrovnik ), Vela Luka and Lumbarda. There are also smaller towns and villages dotted around the island for those looking for a more secluded holiday.

Korcula is one of Croatia’s most treasured islands although, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, not quite as popular as some of its slightly more northern counterparts, such as Brac and Hvar . This may be because the island is a little further away to get to (both from Split or Dubrovnik ) and some of the most convenient ferry services to the island only run in summer.

On the one hand, of course, this is somewhat of a shame but on the other, this means you have fewer crowds and can enjoy the island more!

See below for our tips on reaching the island, its history, what to see and where to stay.

Events on Korcula

Generally, events on the island centre around the summer months – peak season – when there are more people around to enjoy all the festivities. Each main town is likely to have some kind of “summer evenings” mini-festival, with assorted events – art exhibitions, folklore evenings, singing, dancing, music, fishermen’s evenings – taking place from about mid-June to September, or thereabouts. Check the websites of the tourist offices listed below for an up-to-date schedule of events.

One of the main events to look out for is performances of the famous Moreska dance. These normally take place twice a week in the town during summer – check locally for more details.

A brief guide & introduction to the Island

One of the most popular travel destinations on Croatia’s South Dalmatian coast, the island of Korcula (pronounced Kor-chu-la) is also one of the greenest. Its dark, dense pine forests inspired the Ancient Cnidian Greeks to name it Melaina Korkyra (Black Corfu or Corcyra, as their homeland region, was once known) when they settled there in 6 BC.

Today, the lush pine forests remain one of the main features of this hilly Adriatic island, especially along its north-facing slopes, scattered with dry stone walls enfolding vineyards and olive groves; still cultivated as a livelihood by inland settlements today. In fact, two of the most popular Croatian white wines , Posip and Grk are grown on the island.

The islanders from seaside towns and villages live mainly from fishing and tourism, as the rocky, indented coastline offers numerous secluded pebble beaches and bays, breathtaking hilltop views, including a small and uninhabited archipelago consisting of sixteen islets, which can be explored by boat, water taxi or kayak.

Like its more popular neighbors Dubrovnik and Hvar , the island has much to offer in terms of history , culture, and of course, natural beauty, with the bonus of having a more relaxed and authentic ambiance.

Its most visited destinations are the Korcula town , known as mini Dubrovnik, with its cluster of terracotta-roofed houses above medieval fortified walls and round towers, facing a narrow sea channel with mountain views from the neighboring peninsula, Lumbarda a small village surrounded by Grk-producing vineyards and the only sand beaches on the island and Vela Luka , the island’s second main port on its western side; a modest resort, known for its prehistoric archaeological finds. Smaller towns and villages around the island, such as Brna , Prizba , and Racisce are less popular but offer a quieter, more local holiday experience, away from the increasing tourist crowds in Croatia.

The main town on the island, also named Korcula is where the sword dance More š ka , a well-known folk drama/dance, which used to be played all over the Mediterranean is now solely performed. Korcula Old Town is a typical medieval walled Dalmatian town, with its round defensive walls and towers and red-roofed houses where Marco Polo  (1254 – 1324) the famous world traveler and writer, as well as a Venetian merchant, is reputed to have been born. In the Old Town, his supposed house of birth will shortly be turned into a Museum of Marco Polo .

The nearest airports are Split and Dubrovnik. The island is fairly easily accessible from the Croatian mainland by various ferries .

EXPERIENCE THE ISLAND OF KORČULA

Explore the island whose dense forests led the original Greek settlers to call it Black Korčula (Greek: Korkyra Melaina; Latin: Korkyra Nigra) and which, the legend says, was discovered by the Greek hero Antenor fleeing Troy.

Walls and towers defended the strategic position of the town of Korčula. The layout of the streets and squares is designed in the form of a herringbone to provide safety and comfort to its residents. As early as 1214, the Statute of the city and island of Korčula regulated the life of Korčula residents with its provisions.

By wandering the streets of the town, discover the religious traditions of confraternities which include the Confraternity of All Saints (1301), the Confraternity of St Rocco (1575), and the Confraternity of Our Lady of Consolation (known among locals as the Confraternity of St Michael, 1603). The confraternities participate in processions all year round and the most impressive ones are held during the Holy Week, on Good Friday and on the feast day of St Theodore (29 July), the heavenly co-patron saint of the town of Korčula. During these events, the members of confraternities display their valuables (veli vosak, torci, cereferali and križi) and shiny liturgical ornaments.

In addition to moreška, the List of Protected Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia also includes kumpanija or ples od boja, a sword dance performed in Pupnat, Čara, Smokvica, Blato and Vela Luka and moštra sword dance performed in Žrnovo. The oldest written record on moreška dates back to 1666, the Act on kumpanija from Žrnovo dates back to 1620, while the oldest written record on kumpanija is found in the Statute of the town and the island of Korčula (1214) which mentions organised army on the island of the same name.

Korčula City Museum

The city museum was opened in 1957. It is located in the Renaissance Gabriellis Palace. By walking through the museum, you can experience the cultural and economic past of Korčula and its natural wealth. The age of the fossil remains goes back to the Mesozoic, the Cretaceous period. The archaeological collection houses the material remains of human activity from prehistoric times to late antiquity and early Christianity. The most prominent subject is the Lumbard Psephism.

The events that took place in the Middle Ages determined the history of Korčula. These are the origin of the Statute of the city and island of Korčula in 1214, the foundation of the Korčula Diocese in 1300, and the foundation of the Brotherhood of All Saints in 1301.

Moreška and kumpanie, protected intangible assets of the Republic of Croatia, are presented with photos and swords.

The works of contemporary Korčula, domestic and international authors are an expression of artistic creativity on Korčula in the 20th and 21st centuries. The Memorial Collection of Petr Šegedin, one of the most important Croatian writers and thinkers of the 20th century, stands out. In the attic of the palace is the original kitchen with a fireplace. It represents a typical island diet, which is confirmed by its position on the UNESCO list.

Arturo Marinović's goldsmith's workshop is the last one in Korčula  jewelry store.   Blacksmithing and goldsmithing were among the trades that characterized Korčula throughout the past.

Marco Polo Interpretation Center

The greatest traveler and explorer of all time, Marco Polo, was born here (Korčula, 1254 - Venice, 1324). Along with inscriptions and displays that remind you of the researcher, the view from the family observation tower is interesting.

7.9.1298. a great naval battle took place between the Genoese and Venetian fleets under the town of Korčula; in this battle, the Venetian fleet was defeated, and the Genoese took a great one among their prisoners   Marco Polo  who was released in 1299 for a large ransom.

Imprisoned in the Genoese prison, Marco Polo narrated his experiences from the trip to China to the scribe Rustichelio, which were recorded in the book "Il Milione".

The family house of the Poles in Mleci disappeared and gave way to a theater, and in Korčula the family house was preserved, as well as the memory of the great Marko. Today, the Depolo family is one of the oldest Korčula families. The oldest description of the aforementioned battle is kept in the National Library in Paris.

Statue of St. Peter, which is now located at the side door, once occupied a place above the main door of the original chapel. The sacristy was upgraded at the beginning of the 19th century. On the main altar there is a famous painting by Leandro Bassan "Unfaithful Thomas" and a precious silver cross.

Next to the parish church of Our Lady of Snow in Pupnat, there is an old press from the time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.

Although a small place, in Pupnat the centuries-old knightly game of kumpanji, old bali and numerous other customs and religious traditions have been preserved. Pupnat celebrates its Day on the feast of Our Lady of the Snow, August 5, and also on August 24 of its Blessed Mark from Pupnat, whose remains are in the parish church.

Žrnovo on the island of Korčula is one of the oldest island settlements. Its hamlets Prvo Selo, Brdo, Kampuš and Postrana, scattered among the hills, were not easy to spot from the sea.

Although the villages have their patrons, the parish church of St. Martin gathered all the inhabitants, making it the central religious and cultural point of Žrnov. It was mentioned for the first time in 1329, which is connected with the founding of the Korcula-Ston diocese in 1300.

Initially a small building like other churches in the area, the church of St. Martin has been upgraded and expanded several times. Bishop Nikola Španić (1633 – 1707) influenced numerous constructions and reconstructions in his diocese, including the church of St. Martin in Žrnovo. During his time, the church acquired dimensions still visible today with baroque features.

In 2006, a bronze statue of Ivan Paul II was placed on the small square in front of the church, the work of the academic sculptor Radoslav Duhović (1929-2020), originally from Žrnovo. The foot of St. Martin, a relief by the contemporary French sculptor Michel Audiard, was installed in 2021, making the Parish of St. Martin and Žrnovo included in the European pilgrimage network known as "Via Sancti Martini".

Are you looking to visit Korčula Croatia — the most fabulous island of Dalmatia? Well, you’ve come to the right place — this Korčula travel guide is designed to give you all the information you need to plan the trip of a lifetime.

I’ve explored Croatia extensively over the past decade, and I think Korčula (pronounced KOR-chu-la ) is one of the best places in the country.

Planning your trip to Korčula last minute?

Korčula ples is a popular destination, so be sure to book hotels and tours as far in advance as possible!

🏔️ Top Experiences and Tours in Korčula :

  • Explore Old Town (One of my favorite things!)
  • Go island hopping (Explore at your own pace)
  • Go kayaking (Great way to see sunset!)

🛌  Top-Rated Hotels in Korčula :

  • Apartments by the Sea Brna (Luxury option in Smokvica)
  • Apartment Manna (I LOVED this place!!)
  • Hotel Lipa (Great budget option)

Like most of Croatia, Korčula is brimming with natural beauty. But Korčula is also home to a spectacular wine culture, a stunning old city, a collection of hidden beaches, endless olive groves, and some unique dining specialties. Korčula is well known, but it’s not as busy or overcrowded as other Croatian islands.

Most travelers come to Korčula for only a few days — or worse, just a day trip from Dubrovnik. But there are so many interesting things to do in Korčula that you’d be better off staying several days, or even a full week! I stayed six days on my most recent visit, and I could have stayed for longer.

It’s easy to fall in love with Korčula, Croatia, and my goal is to help YOU fall in love with Korčula as well. Sit back, grab a beverage, and get ready to dive into this incredible island in the Adriatic Sea.

Why travel to Korčula Croatia?

There are so many beautiful islands to visit in Croatia. Why should you choose Korčula over the others?

Most locals have an easy answer for that: WINE. Korčula has a reputation for being the wine island, and it’s home to some varietals you can’t find anywhere else, like Grk and Pošip. While you can find local wine on every Croatian island, Korčula’s wines are head and shoulders above the rest.

I’ve spent a lot of time researching the five major islands between Split and Dubrovnik — Brač, Hvar , Vis , Korčula, and Mljet — and my two favorite islands are Korčula and Vis.

While Vis has the best vibe for chilling out , and I think it’s best suited for people who have been to Croatia before, Korčula is best for first-time visitors to Croatia or people who want to do lots of interesting things. Korčula has the best things to do, the best cultural background, and the best food and wine experiences of all the Croatian islands.

Whether you want to go bike riding through vineyards that edge along the sea or take in a fearsome Moreška dance performance, whether you want to go wine tasting up and down the island or discover hidden beaches, whether you want to have a Michelin-starred meal or country food in a traditional konoba, Korčula has something for you!

Korčula, to me, feels like a very adult-oriented island. That’s not to say it’s not family-friendly — EVERYWHERE in Croatia is family-friendly — but Korčula’s best treasures are very much for grown-ups.

Stay out late at a tapas bar. Have cocktails in the tower of a medieval city wall. Drive down a spine-tinglingly steep road to a clear, perfect beach. This is YOUR island.

Korčula Island FAQ

I recommend spending at least three days in Korčula because there’s so much to do here ! Spending a week would be fantastic, especially if you add on day trips to nearby Mljet or Pelješac.

In my opinion, Korčula is far better than Hvar . Korčula is more beautiful than Hvar, it’s cheaper, it doesn’t have Hvar’s party crowd, and it has a culinary scene with unique wines.

I recommend staying in Korčula Town to be close to everything, or Lumbarda if you want a seaside town surrounded by vineyards just a short water taxi ride away. I highly recommend Hotel Korčula de la Ville .

The only way to get to Korčula is by ferry . If you have a car, you can take a direct ferry from Split or Orebić on the Pelješac peninsula; there are passenger-only ferries from Dubrovnik, Hvar, and Mljet.

Best Things to Do in Korčula Croatia

So what are the best things to do in Korčula island? You could spend your days being lazy, sitting on beaches and trying the special wines. You could be more active, biking around the towns and learning to windsurf.

I recommend doing some wine-oriented and history-oriented activities in Korčula, as well as taking in a few gorgeous beaches.

Here are my picks for the best things to do in Korčula.

Kate wears a racerback top and bike helmet and stands with her hand on her hip, overlooking the vineyards of Lumbarda, Croatia.

Go on a Biking and Wine Tour

My absolute favorite thing to do in Korčula was taking a bike and wine tour down to Lumbarda! This is a tour organized by the Korčula Tourism Office offering the best of both worlds — physical activity, stunning scenery, and deliciousness. Our guide Lea met us at our hotel with perfectly sized e-bikes and led us on a tour out of Korčula Town down to the village of Lumbarda.

Wine regions are always beautiful — but Lumbarda is on another level. You may have biked through gorgeous vineyards in Tuscany or Sonoma, but have you ever biked through vineyards as bright turquoise ocean waves crash nearby? It was heart-wrenchingly beautiful. I don’t even have the most beautiful shots because I was biking the whole time!

We stopped at Bire Winery and were introduced to Grk wine (pronounced gurk ) — a fascinating wine varietal that only grows in Lumbarda. Grk has a long and storied history, dating back to the 5th century AD, when the Ancient Greeks colonized the Adriatic. The word Grk means either Greek or bitter in Croatian. And it only has female flowers — it must be cross-pollinated with male flowers, usually Plavac Mali.

Grk is a full-bodied white wine — the kind that stands strong on its own, announcing its presence. We enjoyed tasting several of Bire’s wines and trying some Dalmatian meats, cheeses, and fish dishes perfectly tailored to the wines.

After that, it was back on the wines, back exploring Lumbarda, stopping at scenic and interesting points all the way back to Korčula Town. I couldn’t get enough of it!

You can book a wine and biking tour through Korčula Explorer . Say hi to Lea for me!

A stone staircase edged with palm trees leading to a tower in Korčula's Old Town.

Explore Korčula Old Town

Korčula has a small but mighty old town, a little Dubrovnik, stacked up in layers like a wedding cake. It’s small and easy to cover on foot (albeit filled with tons of stairs), and it’s edged with a beautiful pathway along the water, lined with nice restaurants and cafes.

This might be heresy, but I think I like Korčula’s old town more than Dubrovnik’s.

Korčula is the rumored birthplace of Marco Polo — and the people of Korčula lean into this legend, while noting that technically there are no historic records, so we don’t even know if he came from Korčula, Venice, or somewhere else entirely.

While touring the town, be sure to check out the bell tower — the highest point in the old town — visit St. Mark’s Cathedral, and get lost in the narrow streets.

You can book a 90-minute historic walking tour here.

Several plates of Croatian tapas -- one with cheeses and nuts, one with zucchini slices, one with anchovies and fish pate, one with shrimp and olives, one with zucchini fritters, one with stewed eggplant in tomatoes.

Have Unique Tapas at Lole Wine Bar

If you’ve spent any amount of time along Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, you know that menus tend to offer the same appetizers over and over: marinated anchovies, octopus salad, pršut, cheese, marinated shrimp. (As I write this, I’ve been on the Dalmatian Coast for more than a month. I can recite that menu by heart.)

However, Lole Wine Bar turns Croatian appetizers on their head, serving them in new and rearranged ways, always rotating, and served alongside an interesting selection of local wines. This is where you’ll get some of the most creative cuisine in the Dalmatian islands.

My suggestion? Come here for a NIGHT. Start with the lighter wines and work your way down! End with the nespole (medlar) liqueur, tasting like marzipan.

Lole gets busy at night, and I highly recommend making a reservation for one night of your stay in Korčula.

A quiet beach with a father helping his son into the blue-green water, a speedboat and mountains in the background.

Explore the Islands by Water Taxi

While Korčula itself is an island, there are a few tiny islands off the coast to visit: most notably, Badija and Vrnik. While there are tours to the islands, it’s cheaper and more flexible to buy a hop-on hop-off water taxi ticket and spend the day exploring at your own pace.

First up is Badija , an uninhabited island home to a monastery. You can visit the monastery and walk the path around the island; it takes about an hour and 45 minutes. If you want to swim, there are some nice hidden beaches on the northern side of the island and some more public ones on the eastern side. There is a snack bar here but it’s otherwise uninhabited.

Next up is Vrnik , significantly smaller than Badija and only inhabited by a few long-term residents. Vrnik feels like an isolated village among the more developed parts of Korčula. If you’re up for a swim, there’s a nice beach right by where the ferry drops you off.

Vrnik Arts Club , a B&B and restaurant, is a cool place to stop for lunch — though a bit pricey. It’s the kind of place where you ask for a menu and the waiter says, “Well, we’ve got some nice octopus today. How about we make that into a nice salad for you, with some arugula and capers, and bring you some bread — how about that?”

I agreed. It was lovely.

Finally, the boat takes you to Lumbarda on the mainland — a great place to go swimming, drink wine, or just relax and enjoy the small town atmosphere. Lumbarda is one of the most beautiful parts of Korčula and I recommend taking a few photos at the very least. They even have one of Croatia’s rare sandy beaches!

You can buy a hop-on hop-off water taxi ticket here , or wait and buy one in person at Korčula Town’s water taxi station, right at the base of the Old Town. I recommend buying ahead of time if you’re visiting in the summer months.

Sometimes the water taxis don’t show up exactly on time — I recommend getting there to wait five to ten minutes early, just in case.

Several men in red and black medieval costumes doing a sword dance in circles around each other.

See a Moreška Sword Dance

If you’ve heard that Croatia has unique sword dances, THE place to see them is Korčula! This sword dance is called a Moreška and it tells the story of two kings fighting it out with their armies for the love of a kidnapped princess. The show is in Croatian but there are English translations available.

This is a fun and interesting show, so I recommend timing your visit to Korčula so you can get to see it. (I also recommend sitting NOT QUITE in the front row as there are a lot of flying swords!)

Moreška shows take place on Mondays and Thursdays at 9:00 PM in July and August, and on Thursdays at 9:00 PM in June and September. Performances are held in the open-air Ljetno Kino, right in the old town. You can buy tickets here in advance or in person at the theater.

Stacks of herbs, honeys, and oils in a honey shop.

Try Traditional Honey at OPG Komparak

One of the stops on our bike tour was at OPG Komparak , a shop serving local honeys, olive oils, and other specialties like jams and preserves. This is a great shop and a nice place to stop to try some unique flavors, including sage, mandarin, and forest honey.

They offer tastings for 5 EUR ($5 USD).

Amusingly, we saw our beekeeper dance in the Moreška show a few hours after meeting him! You’ll soon learn that Korčula is essentially a small town, everyone knows everyone, and everyone has multiple side hustles in tourism.

A glass of golden Grk wine in the foreground on the edge; in the background, bright blue-green water and a small boat.

Enjoy all the Grk wine

Seriously, you should try as much Grk as you can while in Korčula. Sure, because it’s a unique and delicious wine and only grows in Lumbarda, an emblem of Korčula island itself.

But also because as soon as you leave Korčula, Grk is hard to find — and when restaurants do have it, it’s often the most expensive Croatian wine on the menu. Eek!

Enjoy the Grk for cheap while you can! And if you’re a huge fan, pick up a bottle or two (a case, maybe?) to take home.

Three plates of oblong hand-rolled pasta: one with shrimp, one in tomato sauce, one in almond pesto with cherry tomatoes.

Visit Konoba Mate for a Traditional Meal

Korčula has a lot of culinary traditions, and one of the best ways to experience that is to visit a traditional konoba, a simple tavern-like restaurant . I enjoyed visiting Konoba Mate in the village of Pupnat, which is known for incorporating Korčula’s delicious plants and produce into different country-style dishes.

This is a great place to try traditional hand-rolled pasta. We loved it so much we tried three kinds!

Some of the standout dishes were the handmade pasta with almond pesto and cherry tomatoes, the braised veal cheeks with roasted garlic, and the laurel leaf mouse for dessert. I hadn’t even heard of laurel leaf before eating here!

A glass of wine reading "Toreta" in the foreground; in the background, the small town of Smokvica with its church tower.

Explore Small Town Wineries

If you limit yourself to Lumbarda’s (admittedly superb) wineries, you’ll be missing out on a lot of great wineries in Korčula! Head inland for more.

Pošip tends to be the star varietal of the inland wineries, though they make a variety of whites, reds, roses, and even sweet wines.

I particularly recommend the town of Smokvica, home to Toreta Winery and Merga Victa Winery , both of which I enjoyed, as well as Winery Milina , Grošić Winery , and Didovinka Winery .

Most of the time you can taste for free.

A fancy plate of food at LD restaurant on the edge of the old town overlooking the blue ocean and islands in the background. There's a Vitello tonnato looking like a beef tartare, a curved thin piece of stiff bread curved around the top, with cured caper leaves and drops of cured egg yolk on the plate.

Have a Michelin-Starred Meal at LD Restaurant

If you’re looking for high-end, cutting-edge cuisine, served right in the Old Town with beautiful views over the Adriatic, LD Restaurant is worth your time. LD has a Michelin star — the only one on Korčula — and this is one of the best restaurants on the island.

LD focuses on local, seasonal Dalmatian ingredients interpreted in new ways — and plated BEAUTIFULLY. That above dish is a repurposed vitello tonnato (a veal and tuna dish from Piemonte, Italy), with egg yolk and chimichurri.

Another standout was sea bass in yellow curry with cauliflower and quinoa, and we loved ending with an affogato (espresso with vanilla ice cream — this one with almond and lemon zest) for dessert.

The food, the location — swoon-worthy. Pair your food with some Grk, of course.

Several windsurfers practicing holding their sails up in the calm water near Badija Island.

Learn to Windsurf — or Go Kayaking

Korčula is famously windy — especially its eastern end. These are perfect conditions for learning to windsurf! You can find courses in Korčula Town as well as Badija Island. Schools like Oreb Sailing and Korčula Sailing Extreme offer windsurfing lessons as well as sailing, kayaking, and SUP excursions.

(If you get bitten by the windsurfing bug, I recommend checking the town of Viganj, just across the water from Korčula on the Pelješac mainland. There is a huge windsurfing community there!)

Would you rather go for a kayak? You can take sunset kayak tours in Lumbarda.

A few people sitting inside the tower at Massimo Bar, enjoying cocktails while overlooking the ocean and mountains.

Have Cocktails in a Tower at Massimo Cocktail Bar

Visiting Massimo Cocktail Bar was one of the highlights of my first trip to Korčula in 2012, and I knew I had to go back. This cocktail bar is in an insane location — on top of a tower in the city walls! The views over Pelješac are sensational, and it’s one of the most unique bar settings I’ve visited.

A few important things to know: you must climb a somewhat scary ladder to get to the top. You probably want to avoid wearing a skirt.

Also, while it’s a cocktail bar, don’t expect craft cocktails. You’re best off sticking to the basics. And it’s a wind tunnel up there. (See the girls’ hair in the photo above?)

Overall, I think Massimo is a great place for one or two drinks and some selfies; I don’t think you’d want to spend a whole evening up there.

A woman in a bathing suit and baseball cap sitting on a narrow wooden dock, holding her leg as if in deep thought. She's in front of clear water in shades of sea green, turquoise, and teal.

Korčula Beaches

A quick tip: while there are lots of small beaches around Korčula Town and Lumbarda, the best Korčula beaches are in the bays in the south of the island. This is something that Korčula locals told me over and over.

These beaches require a bit of a trek by car, and sometimes it’s a bit of a hairy journey down steep, narrow and/or unpaved roads.

Are roads like that not your thing? That’s fine! Enjoy one of the easier-to-get-to beaches close to where you are. You can even go swimming right off the Old Town of Korčula, pictured above.

Here are two of my favorite Korčula beaches:

Pupnatska Luka Beach: a narrow white pebble beach in front of bright blue water, boats in the background.

Pupnatska Luka Beach

Pupnatska Luka is one of the bay beaches on the southern coast, south of the town of Pupnat. This is one of the most lauded beaches in Korčula and once you get here, you’ll find chairs and umbrellas for rent and a few beach bars. There’s even a bar outpost of Konoba Mate!

I enjoyed the vibe of this beach — probably my favorite beach in Korčula. The beach is decently wide and you’ll probably have an easy time finding a spot. The crystal clear waters are perfect for swimming.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Google Maps sent us here a very scary way, down a rocky unpaved road that felt like it was going to tear up the bottom of the car! But you can avoid this!

Take a look at Pupnatska Luka on Google Maps and zoom in. You’ll see one road leading out to the left (west) and one road leading out to the right (east). The road on the right, the eastern road, is the one you want. It’s paved and fine (though quite narrow at some stretches!).

Bačva Beach: a few kids snorkeling in calm, clear blue-green water.

Bačva Beach

Bačva Beach requires a similar journey to Pupnatska Luka’s — a curvy, switchbacky, zig-zaggy paved road leading down to the coast. But this one is smaller, more peaceful, and dare I say even more special than its neighbor.

You’ll park at a steep angle in the makeshift parking lot down by the beach, then walk down a long path through pine forest. You know you’re in the right place when you see a small restaurant and a small, narrow beach with calm, clear water.

Lots of families choose Bačva because the water is nice and calm. It’s more beautiful, but it being smaller means that there isn’t as much space to spread out.

Still, a wonderful beach on Korčula!

Zavalatica: A view from above a bay in shades ranging from navy to teal, filled with small speedboats, edged with a rocky waterfront, white houses with orange roofs further back from the coastline.

Take in the View in Zavalatica

We ended up in the town of Zavalatica on a whim while exploring the island — but it turned into my favorite view of the trip! Zavalatica is a town on the southern coast of Korcula. As we drove in, we were struck speechless by this view.

Want to enjoy a bite with this view? We had lunch at Konoba Albert and enjoyed some nice fried calamari while taking in the blue-green ocean.

As you can see below, there are ladders leading into the sea from the rocky beaches. Nice spot for a swim!

Vela Luka: a row of boats anchored to the waterfront, palm trees and orange-roofed houses in the background.

Have a Coffee in Vela Luka

Vela Luka is Korčula’s largest city, and this is where the larger car ferries from Split dock in Korčula. It’s located on the west coast of the island, about a 40-minute drive from Korčula Town.

Vela Luka isn’t the most exciting place on the island, but I thought it was worth getting a coffee and taking a stroll around the harbor before moving on.

Have limited time in Korčula? You can skip this without regret.

The view of Pelješac from Korčula town: a zoomed-in view of a tiny small town of white homes with orange roofs, and straight upward is a mountain, lots of greenery near the bottom, and more and more empty gray stone near the top.

Day Trips from Korčula

Is there any reason to leave Korčula while you’re there? Not really. There is enough on Korčula to keep you entertained for quite some time.

But if you’re spending a week or so based in Korčula, and it’s the only island getaway during your time in Croatia, you may want to see a bit more of the surrounding area.

There are two places I recommend visiting as a day trip from Korčula: Mljet and Pelješac.

The view from above Mljet, an island covered with lush green trees, and in the center, a bright blue saltwater lake.

Mljet is a gorgeous nature island and one of my favorite spots in Croatia. The western side of the island is home to Mljet National Park, filled with saltwater lakes and lush forests.

And because Mljet lies just east of Korčula, and the national park is on the western side of Mljet, it’s quicker and easier to do as a day trip from Korčula than a day trip from Dubrovnik.

On Mljet I recommend swimming in the saltwater lakes, visiting St. Mary’s Island in the lake, and exploring the small villages in the park.

If you have the stamina to hike on a hot day, I recommend climbing to Montokuc, one of the highest points on the island with spectacular views (including the photo above). It’s about a 45-minute hike from the main parking lot in the national park.

You can do this as an independent day trip by taking the ferry from Korčula town in the morning to the town of Pomena, which is right on the edge of the national park. It’s a 30-minute journey. The ferry returns in the afternoon.

Rows of vineyards and a small town with orange roofs in the background in Pelješac.

Pelješac ( PELL-ee-yeh-shatz , or said quicker, simply PELL-eh-shatz ), is the peninsula on the mainland just across from Korčula town. I spent a week in Pelješac and really enjoyed it — it’s a casual and unpretentious part of Dalmatia that not a lot of Americans visit, but Europeans know and love.

If you’re a wine fan in the least — and especially a red wine fan — you MUST visit Pelješac. They are home to the renowned Plavac Mali varietal of red wine, which also makes Postup and Dingač.

Dingač is a truly special deep red wine. If you like Zinfandel or Primitivo, you will LOVE Dingač. My favorite Dingač is from Bartulović Winery , a small family-run winery in the tiny town of Prizdrina.

Beyond wine, Pelješac is home to the town of Ston, home to world-famous oysters and the longest stone wall in Europe (!), Viganj, a chilled out windsurfing town; and Divna Beach near Trpanj, quite possibly the most beautiful beach in Croatia. The dramatic roads lead you to stunning views in every direction.

Alternatively, if you’re driving from Korčula to Dubrovnik, I recommend leaving early and spending the day exploring Pelješac before driving to Dubrovnik. That is a GREAT way to spent a driving day!

You can independently visit Pelješac from Korčula. The ferry from Korčula Town to Orebić takes just 20 minutes. I recommend having a car to explore the peninsula and wineries (though of course, driving limits your ability to drink).

If you want to visit Pelješac independently from Korčula but don’t want to drive, I recommend taking the ferry to Orebić, then walking to Korta Katarina winery , about a 25-minute walk from the ferry port. They do a wonderful gourmet tasting and the setting is gorgeous.

Where to Stay in Korčula

Korčula town.

Where’s the best place to stay in Korčula? Most travelers stay in Korčula Town, which is where you’ll find most of the activities on the island — but it’s not your only option.

If you’re only visiting Korčula for a few days, I recommend basing in Korčula Town, or possibly Lumbarda if you want a more relaxed experience. If you’ve got more time than that, consider spending a few nights elsewhere on the island to have a more well-rounded island escape.

Lumbarda and the rural countryside are solid options in addition to Korčula Town. I would skip Vela Luka; while it’s Korčula’s largest city, it’s not nearly as charming as other spots around the island.

Top-Rated Hotels in Korčula Town:

  • Luxury: Aminess Korčula Heritage Hotel (I stayed here back when it was Hotel Korčula de la Ville and loved the building and location!)
  • Mid-Range: M & J Central Suites
  • Budget: Guesthouse Franica

Find deals on hotels and apartments in Korčula Town here.

Families lounging on a sandy beach in Croatia, white stone buildings in the background.

An alternative to staying in Korčula Town is Lumbarda — a small town surrounded by the sea on three sides, filled with criss-crossing vineyards. Lumbarda is a short distance from Korčula Town — a 10-minute drive or short water taxi.

Lumbarda is where locals go when they want to get away. It’s home to beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants (that are cheaper than the ones in Korčula’s old town), and several top-notch wineries. It’s not completely unknown, but it doesn’t get nearly as many tourist crowds as Korčula Town.

If you’d like to spend time in a quieter, more relaxing town and have lots of beach time, Lumbarda is a great choice.

Top-Rated Hotels in Lumbarda:

  • Luxury: Eco Aparthotel: The Dreamer’s Club
  • Mid-Range: Adrian’s Guesthouse & Winery
  • Budget: Guesthouse Bebic

Find deals on hotels and apartments in Lumbarda here.

Countryside

Another option is to stay somewhere in the countryside, which can show you the other side of island life (not to mention save money). We stayed in the town of Žrnovo, which is only five minutes outside Korčula Town, but felt a world away. We chose Žrnovo because it’s home to the Pinjac Brewery and we wanted to enjoy the beers without worrying about driving.

We stayed two nights at Apartment Manna , a comfortable, modern one-bedroom in Žrnovo, and highly recommend it. Warning: if you leave the door open, Bobby the ginger cat will come in and make himself at home!

Two other nice countryside towns I’d recommend staying in are Smokvica and Pupnat .

  • Luxury: Apartments by the Sea Brna in Smokvica
  • Mid-Range: Apartment Manna in Žrnovo (I LOVED this place!)
  • Budget: Hotel Lipa in Blato

How to Get to Korčula Croatia

Korčula is an island without an airport, so the best way to get here is by ferry. But not all ferries go to Korčula Town, and not all ferries take cars. You can see the full list of ferry times and schedules here.

You’ll want to fly into Split or Dubrovnik. Split tends to have more flight options. Check flights on Skyscanner to find the lowest prices.

How to Get to Korčula from Split

From Split, you can take the car ferry to Vela Luka on the western end of Korčula (3.5 hours).

From Vela Luka, you can drive to Korčula Town (40 minutes). There are also buses that can take you to Korčula town.

Keep in mind that at Split’s ferry port, this boat will be labeled “Vela Luka” and not “Korčula.”

You can check the ferry schedule here.

How to Get to Korčula from Dubrovnik

There is a passenger-only catamaran that goes from Dubrovnik to Korčula Town (two hours).

If you want to have your car, there’s a better way: drive from Dubrovnik to Orebić on the Peljesač peninsula (two hours, and what a gorgeous drive!) and take the car ferry from there (20 minutes).

Another mountain scene with vineyards in a valley, surrounded by lush green hills.

How to Get Around Korčula

If you plan to stick to Korčula Town, Lumbarda, and the immediate vicinity, you don’t need a car. But if you plan on exploring the island in depth, visiting one of the small cove beaches, or getting into the countryside, I highly recommend renting a car.

If you’re planning to explore beyond Korčula Town and Lumbarda, having a set of wheels is essential. If you arrive without a car, you can rent one — or, alternatively, rent a scooter.

There is limited public transportation system with buses that circle the island. See schedules on the Arriva website .

Finally, there’s the hop-on-hop-off water taxi , which goes from Korčula Town to Badija to Vrnik to Lumbarda and back in reverse, which is a scenic way of getting to Lumbarda.

Best Time to Visit Korčula

The best time to visit Korčula is September — plain and simple. That is what I recommend for the best time to visit Croatia as well.

September is the sweet spot — you get summer weather, but the crowds have died down and the kids are back in school. Plus, the water is SO warm in September — you definitely don’t get that same effect in May! You could even try early October for similar results.

Korčula’s peak season is during the summer months, with peak crowds and prices in July and August. Many activities in Korčula are only running during the summer months, so if you’re looking to enjoy the activities I wrote about in this post, June through September is your best bet.

Korcula has several food, wine, and music festivals that take place during the summer months.

Shoulder season, from April to May and from October to November, is an option for pleasant weather and smaller crowds, but know that some places will be closed and ferries won’t run as often.

Croatia’s Holy Week celebrations involve stunning processions — this can be a nice time to visit Korčula.

Much of Korčula shuts down in the winter months. I wouldn’t recommend visiting at this time unless you were coming to do nothing, like if you wanted a quiet place to write a book for a month or so.

Travel Insurance for Croatia

A lot of people don’t think it’s necessary to get travel insurance for Croatia — after all, it’s a safe country with decent healthcare. But you need it.  If you get sick or injured on your trip, if you get robbed, or even if you have to be flown home, travel insurance will protect you from financial ruin.  I’ve used World Nomads for trips to Croatia.

I have thankfully never needed to call my travel insurance for help while in Croatia — but I do have a friend who had to visit the hospital after being stung by a wasp in Split, one who sprained her ankle after falling down the steps in Dubrovnik, and one who got her wallet stolen and needed to go to the police station.

While Croatia’s hospital prices aren’t anywhere near what the US would charge you, you could end up paying a lot of money for a serious medical issue. But travel insurance protects you and refunds you for your costs. It’s the kind of thing you don’t know you need until you need it. See if World Nomads is right for you here.

Korčula is waiting for you!

Korčula is a fantastic island — and it makes me so happy. I had a great time on my first visit to Korčula in 2012, but I had the BEST time when I came back years later and stayed a week.

I’m proud to call Korčula one of my favorite islands in the world. I can only hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

Go to Korčula island, have a wonderful trip — then come back and tell me all about it!

Korcula Island FAQs [Updated 2024]

Here we answer some of the most often-asked questions about Korcula Island. Have a question that we haven’t answered? Ask away in the comments below.

Where is Korcula?

There are just over 1200 islands in Croatia, one of which is Korcula. Lying almost halfway between Split and Dubrovnik, the Island of Korcula is part of the South Dalmatia region . Nearby islands include the Skoji archipelago (located between Korcula Town & Lumbarda), Lastovo, Mljet and Hvar. Korcula is separated from the mainland, the Peljesac Peninsula , by a mere 1270 metres. The island spreads over 279 km2 and is home to about 15,500 truly hospitable people.

How do I get to Korcula?

If you’re travelling to Korcula direct from an airport, it is best to fly into Split and Dubrovnik. From there the easiest method is to take a passenger catamaran directly to Korcula. Most of the catamarans arrive at Korcula Town, some arrive at Vela Luka.

It’s also possible to bring a car to Korcula. There is a car ferry from Split to Vela Luka or you can drive to Orebic, the closest mainland town to the island and take the car ferry to Domince, a small port just outside of Korcula Town.

Click here for more detailed information about how to get to Korcula.

When is the best time to visit Korcula?

People visit Korcula at all times of the year, so it really depends upon what you are looking to do when you get here. It’s very much a seasonal tourist destination, so you will find that most of the attractions and restaurants etc are closed from November until April. There are also more limited travel options to the island at this time. Many rental properties or hotels may not be open during this time or have limited heating options.

Anytime from mid-May through to the start of October, you should find plenty of establishments open and enough options to easily get on and off the island. When you come during that time will depend upon how much sun you want, if you want to swim, if you want to avoid the crowds and what your budget is.

Click here for some detailed information about the best time to visit Korcula Island .

Do I need a car on Korcula?

No, it’s not essential to have a car on Korcula. There are public catamarans that allow regular travel to and from the island. Once on the island, there is public transport in the form of buses, water taxis and regular taxis and each of the towns and villages are small enough to explore on foot.

Should you be staying longer on the island, having a car will be useful if you want to explore some of the more remote bays, or if you plan to stay somewhere more remote. There are also agencies renting cars – it’s not super cheap but a good option if you want to spend the day exploring further afield.

Where is the best place to stay on Korcula

Anywhere you stay on Korcula will be wonderful! However depending on how long you plan to stay on the island, whether you want to be close to amenities, and what style of accommodation you prefer, will impact your choice.

For example, if you’re staying a short time, then staying close to one of the main towns such as Korcula Town or Vela Luka would be a good option. If you’re staying longer, choose a destination outside of these main hubs, such as Lumbarda or Zrnovska Banja. If you want to experience more of a local feel but still be close to the sea, Racisce might be a good choice. And for something rural head to the hills in Zrnovo or the vineyard-growing village of Smokvica.

What are the best things to do on Korcula?

There is an abundance of things to do and experiences to enjoy on Korcula, including cultural & historical activities such as visiting churches and museums or watching a sword dance, indulging in the food & wine scene by visiting local wineries and producers and outdoor activities, of course on the sea – swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, but also exploring the countryside trails on the island by foot or bike.

We have created an ultimate list of things here to do on Korcula. Click here to see our list.

How many days do I need on Korcula?

It depends upon how much you really want to see and experience. Personally, I do not think one day or one night is enough – definitely not. I appreciate that there are many awesome places to explore in Croatia and you might not have time enough to spend longer on the island, but if you can, do. One of the things we hear from guests who join us on a wine & food tour is that they wish they planned to stay longer on Korcula.

What is the minimum length of time I would suggest: 3 nights. This gives you time to relax on your arrival day, explore the Old Town, spend time on the water, visit another town or village, and chill out at the beach – all without having to rush through it all. If you can stay longer, even better. Korcula Island is perfectly positioned to explore other Dalmatian locations as day trips for example you could visit the National Park Island of Mljet.

What is the currency used on Korcula?

From 2023 the national currency of Croatia is Euro. You can bring your own local currency and exchange it for Euro at one of the financial agencies (FINA) or tourist agencies. There are also a number of ATMS – just be wary of using those not associated with a bank as they may charge a high fee for cash withdrawal.

Is Korcula expensive?

There is no denying that as Croatia has become more recognised as a tourist destination and has become increasingly popular, prices have increased. It’s still relative to your own lifestyle however whether you will find things here expensive.

In comparison to some other popular destinations such as Dubrovnik and Hvar, the island of Korcula is less expensive. But things here are more expensive than in the capital. You will also find that prices are higher in Korcula Town, which is the place most visitors go to, compared to other spots, such as Vela Luka or Zrnovo.

There are expensive restaurants, but there are also traditional places that are very affordable – they just aren’t going to be in the heart of the town. Hotels will cost you more, but you can rent reasonably-priced apartments. There are many low-cost and free things to do on Korcula.

So I would put it somewhere in the middle for expense – it’s not ‘as cheap’ as some places in the Balkans, but you can make the Euro go further than in other parts of Central Europe.

What is Korcula known for?

Korcula Island has many descriptions. These include “little Dubrovnik” (although I like to think of Dubrovnik as ‘big Korcula’!), picture-perfect, the crown jewel of the Adriatic and the Emerald Isle. Korcula is a true example of the natural beauty that the country of Croatia boasts. This small island oozes with culture and is characterised by a diverse landscape and has a rich history.

Korcula is particularly well known for its local produce including wine, such as Grk and Posip, olive oil and traditional sweet cakes and biscuits such as cukarin. It also has some gorgeous beaches (including sandy ones) and scenic landscapes including vineyards, olive groves and forested areas.

Does Korcula have good beaches? What is the best beach on Korcula?

Korcula has exceptionally good beaches! You’re not often going to find large or sandy beaches however, the majority are small and pebbly. Some of the best beaches are further away from the towns, in small bays or on the islets lying off the coast of Korcula such as Proizd and Vrnik. The sea is incredibly clear so really you can swim anywhere. If it’s sandy beaches you are after, you will find some in Lumbarda.

To answer the question, what is the best beach on Korcula, of course, we have our favourites, but really you can’t go wrong with any beach! We particularly like Vaja in Racisce because the water here is just mesmerising. The beaches on Proizd and Vrnik are really worth visiting – they are small, but the views and water clarity is incredible, especially good if you like snorkelling.

Is Korcula walkable?

No matter what town, village or bay you find yourself in on Korcula, all are walkable.

What is a traditional dish from Korcula?

A commonly asked question – what’s authentic cuisine from the island? Firstly, it’s simple dishes using seasonal and fresh ingredients with herbs, seasoning and olive oil to add flavour.

People eat a lot of fresh fish and seafood including octopus and squid, accompanied by salads or a mixture of potato and swiss chard. There’s also a lot of soup, broth-style soups, and bean stew-style dishes. Traditional meat dishes include slow-cooked peka (which is delicious) and pasticada.

Where to buy the best wine and olive oil?

It is best to buy wine directly from a winery (you can read more about wines from Korcula here ) or from a wine shop. Olive oil, again where possible, purchase directly from a producer and make sure you buy it fresh (ideally within a year old).

Wine recommendations: Any winery, Wine Shop Dionysus (Near the east port, just outside of the old town), Wine Corner (Korcula Town), place in Vela Luka

Olive Oil recommendations: Frane and Fanito Delikates shop (Korcula Old Town), OPG Jerolim (Vela Luka), OPG Anica Bazika (Lumbarda)

What wines to try on Korcula?

The island of Korcula is best known for white wines, in particular, Grk and Posip which are two indigenous grapes from the island. You will find Grk growing mainly in Lumbarda and Posip in Smokvica and Cara. Rukatac is another white wine you can find on the island. Red wine is typically made from Plavac Mail grapes. A growing number of winemakers are making rose wine from the Plavac Mail grape and the red grape, Plavina. Less often you will find Prosek, which is the name for Croatian dessert wine. You won’t find much sparkling wine on the island, although Bire winery makes a tasty sparkling rose.

There are also a number of other less commonly known grapes growing on the island that are often used to make house wine or table wine. Some are very good, others are a little ropey! You won’t often know or be told the grape names it will just be called ‘domestic wine’.

We run wine tours on Korcula, so if you’d like to visit local wineries as part of a tour, click here for more information about wine-tasting tours on Korcula .

Is English widely spoken on the island?

Yes, English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants. However, learning a few basic Croatian phrases can enhance your experience and show appreciation for the local culture.

Is it necessary to book accommodation in advance?

While it’s possible to find accommodations upon arrival or short notice, especially in the low season, it’s recommended to book in advance, particularly during peak tourist months. This ensures you secure the best options and have a stress-free stay. We have recommendations of places to stay on Korcula Island here and specifically where to stay in Korcula Town here .

Things To Do Korcula FAQs

Before we jump into our list of Korcula, Croatia Things To Do, we want to answer a few frequently asked questions.

Where is Korcula?

Korcula is located along the Dalmatian Coast in the Adriatic Sea. Part of the Central Dalmatian Archipelago, Korcula is separated from the mainland Peljasac Peninsula by a rather narrow body of water, the Strait of Peljasac.

Korcula Island is situated about halfway between the mainland cities of Split and Dubrovnik. It is the sixth largest Adriatic island, but the second most populous.

How is Korcula Pronounced?

In the Croatian language, Korcula is spelled  Korčula – with a small V over the C. As this letter is not in the Latin alphabet, many tourists struggle to pronounce Korcula.

Here’s a little tip: when you see a small V over the letter C (or over the letters S and Z), the sound you make is similar to Ch (or Sh or Zh). Therefore, the correct Korcula pronunciation is KOR-chu-la .

What is Korcula Known For?

In addition to hosting one of the most gorgeous fortified Medieval towns, the Island of Korcula is known for its wine production, pine forests, culinary treasures and beautiful beaches.

Is Korcula Expensive?

Of all the Croatia Islands, Korcula is one that is a bit more expensive, with prices similar to those seen in Hvar Town on Hvar Island.

Korcula Town, Croatia hotels – specifically – can be quite costly during the summer months. Additionally, travelers will find higher prices at restaurants when compared to other Croatian island eateries.

That’s not to say that travelers can’t visit Korcula on a budget. In our list of Things To Do in Korcula, Croatia, we feature activities and attractions covering a wide price point.

Is Korcula Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! The island is fairly easy to get to, it’s stunningly beautiful and there is a long list of things to do in Korcula to entertain travelers.

Korcula Town, Croatia

Korcula Town Gate on Korcula Island, Croatia

Korcula Town is the island’s most visited destination. The ancient city is perched on a small peninsula and wrapped in defensive stone walls. Korcula’s pedestrian-only streets were designed like a fishbone. The main thoroughfare runs through the center with angled side streets branching off each side. The layout was thoughtfully planned to welcome the summer breeze and limit the winter wind.

Things To Do in Korcula Town

Water views of lovely Korcula Town, Croatia

Many Korcula sights are located within the confines of the historic Old Town. Because of their close proximity, the top attractions can be covered in a few hours. Visitors on a day trip from Split will have plenty of time to discover the best Korcula sights.

What To See in Korcula Old Town

Fresh produce market outside Land Gate on Korcula Island, Croatia

The entire fortified Old Town is a sight! The narrow cobblestone lanes are lined with opulent architecture. We recommend simply wandering through the historic center and taking it all in. That said, make sure your self-guided Korcula walking tour includes the highlights.

Korcula Sightseeing

St. Mark's Bell Tower through Revelin Tower arch in Old Town on Korcula Island, Croatia

Land Gate (Kopnena Vrata) : On the south side of the city, a wide stone staircase leads up to the grand Land Gate and 15th century tower.

St. Mark’s Cathedral : The Gothic and Renaissance church was built from the 14th to 16th centuries and is dedicated to the patron saint of Korcula.

Marco Polo House : It is believed (but disputed) that Marco Polo – one of the world’s most famous explorers – was born in Korcula in the year 1254. The Marco Polo Korcula Museum tells the story of his life.

Korcula Town Museum : From pre-historic to modern times, the museum details the history of Korcula – and it’s housed in a 16th century palace.

Top Tip : The Old Town is congested with tourists during the day in the peak season. For visitors who stay in Korcula Town overnight, we recommend getting up bright and early to enjoy a blissfully peaceful walk through the city center at dawn.

Korcula Attractions Outside the Walls

View of Korcula Old Town from across the bay on Korcula Island, Croatia

Outside the city walls, a walkway encircles the town. In addition to the sensational sea views, many of the best restaurants in Korcula Old Town are found along the eastern wall. Next to the City Gate, in the Rotonda, is the local Korcula Market, where vendors sell in-season produce.

To the west of town, a path follows the coastline of Korcula Harbor. On the western side of the bay – across from the Old Town – is the Dominican Monastery, St. Nicholas Church and Convent. From the shoreline, look back toward the Old Town for the absolute best view of Korcula. (This is one of our favorite spots for a picnic lunch and bottle of Croatian wine!)

The Moreska Sword Dance in Korčula Town

The Korcula Sword Dance – called Moreska – is a traditional theatrical performance that dates to the 12th century. During the summer months, Korcula visitors can watch the Sword Dance on an outdoor stage (although tickets are required and can be purchased at the tourist office).

The show tells the story of the battle over a princess. Korčula Island is the only place in the Mediterranean that honors the tradition of Moreska.

Hiking

One of the best things to do in Korcula Town is to make use of the paths and explore nearby sights. Forteca Svetog Vlaha: Take a short walk to the British Fort just south of town. From the path you can get stellar views of the Old Town.

St. Antun Church: About a half-hour hike from town, make the trek up St. Anthony’s Hill to the St. Antun Church. The church is reached via a staircase of 102 steps through a Cypress forest. Hikers are rewarded with sweeping views from the hilltop.

Best Beaches

Looking for Korcula Town beaches to soak up the sun or cool off with a swim? There are a few (non-sandy) beaches in Korcula Town where visitors can cool off in the refreshing Adriatic Sea.

Ispod Duvana Beach, near the Dominican Monastery, is the most popular Korcula Town beach. Other swimming spots are Luka Korculanska Beach, Beach Zakerjan and Banje Beach.

Pro Tip: Visitors seeking sandy beaches on the Croatian Island of Korcula can find them in Lombarda – which we feature in the next section.

Restaurants

Seaside restaurants outside town walls on Korcula Island, Croatia

Although the city is small, there is a plethora of Korcula Town restaurants. Seafood is heavily favored as the local cuisine, but there is a strong Italian influence, too. As we already mentioned, many of the highly-rated restaurants in Korcula are located along the eastern wall with sea-view seating. Read reviews for top Korcula, Croatia restaurants on TripAdvisor .

Our Recommendation of Where To Eat

Although it is difficult to pass up the sea view restaurants, visitors who want an authentic local meal should make the effort to go to Pinjac Pub in the nearby village of Zrnovo.

The family-run restaurant serves traditional fare (try the island’s famous Zrnovksa Makaruni pasta!), locally produced wine and their own homemade beer from their on-site brewery (the only brewery on the island!). Not only do they offer delicious feasts at fair prices, they are also an incredibly friendly family. Read reviews!

To get to Pinjac Pub and Brewery, we took a taxi from Korcula Town. It’s also possible to walk from the Old Town (which we would have done, had it not been raining) – it should take about an hour.

When the sun sets, you’ll likely be wondering what to do in Korcula, Croatia at night. While not known as a party destination (like Hvar Town on Hvar Island), there are a few places that constitute Korcula nightlife. A popular spot with DJs and dancing (complete with stripper poles) is Dos Locos No. 1. When we stopped in Korcula Town during our week-long Croatia Island Hopping Cruise , a group from our boat danced the night away at Dos Locos.

Korcula Bars We Recommend

Wine barrel tables at Bokar Wine Bar in Old Town, Korcula Island, Croatia

While dancing all night at clubs can be a blast for some, we usually prefer a more laid-back vibe…and Korcula has numerous establishments for a chilled out cocktail or glass of excellent Croatian wine.

Cocktail Bar Massimo

Tower that houses Massimo Bar on Korcula Island, Croatia

Although a bit of a novelty bar, Masimo’s location can’t be beat! Located on the top of a 15th century tower on the northern tip of the peninsula, Massimo is a fun and unique bar in Korcula.

To get inside, guests climb a ladder up to the turret. Drinks, which are priced to match the view, are delivered via pulley from the downstairs bar. The views are simply outstanding – and having a drink at Massimo for sunset is one of the top Korcula things to do!

Bokar Wine Bar

Glass of red Postup wine at Bokar Wine Bar in Korcula, Croatia

In our opinion, drinking Croatian wine is one of the essential Korcula activities! The intimate Bokar Wine Bar is an unpretentious place to sample wine from Korcula Island as well as the nearby Peljesac Peninsula and greater Dalmatian region.

The small space can only accommodate about 12 people, but grab a spot outside (right on the steps if necessary!). The superb wait staff are knowledgeable and friendly – and always ready to offer insight on the different offerings of amazing wine from Croatia.

Lumbarda, Croatia

Vineyards in Lumbarda on Korcula Island, Croatia

The quaint seaside village of Lumbarda is just 3.5 miles south of the Korcula Old Town. Inhabited since ancient times, Lumbarda is a small community of fisherman and farmers.

During the 16th century, many wealthy families from Korcula Town built summer residences in Lumbarda. Today, the village is again seeing a boost in tourism due to it’s sandy shoreline and local wine, Grk. Spending a leisurely day in Lumbarda is one of the top Korcula Island things to do.

L umbarda Beaches

Northern Lumbarda rocky Coastline

Unlike the rest of Croatia’s rocky coastline, in Lumbarda, some of the beaches are actually sandy. In fact, there are four sandy beaches in Lumbarda where beach goers can enjoy a soft shoreline rather than a rocky edge.

Beach Vela Przina, along the south coast, is regularly rated as one of the best beaches in Korcula. The water is shallow, so it’s a favorite spot to play the Croatian handball game, Picigin. There are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent on Vela Przina Beach.

Other Lumbarda Korcula Island beaches that are sandy are Beach Bilin Zal, Beach Tatinja and Beach Prvi Zal.

Although not sandy, Lenga Beach is a local favorite and a bit of a hidden gem (it’s also one of the best Korcula beaches that is FKK, a.k.a. nude).

Grk Wine Tasting

Grk Wine at cafe in Lumbarda, Korcula Island, Croatia

As we already mentioned, drinking wine is one of the best things to do in Korcula, Croatia…and when in Lumbarda, tasting Grk wine is a must!

The only place the Grk Bijeli white wine variety is grown in the world is in Lumbarda. The Grk vine only produces female flowers, so it is often cross-pollinated with Plavac Mali (another famous Croatian wine-making grape).

Grk Wineries

Winery Grk sign at vineyard in Lumbarda on Korcula Island, Croatia

There are several wineries in Lumbarda where visitors can get a taste of the local Grk wine straight from the source. Vineyards cover the land just inland from the sandy shoreline. Popular Korcula wineries in Lumbarda that offer tastings are Winery Grk, Popic Winery, Bire Winery and Lovric Winery.

Top Tip: At restaurants in Lumbarda, Grk wine is usually offered by the glass or bottle – but is rarely found in grocery stores.

Lumbarda Exploration

Statue of man in Lumbarda on Korcula Island, Croatia

Being a small village, exploring Lumbarda on foot is a pleasant way to discover the town. A coastal path follows the shoreline in both directions from the town center; we particularly liked the path to the north.

Narrow lanes weave through the Old Town center to Sveti Rok Church, a charming church on the top of a small hill.

How To Get to Lumbarda from Korcula Old Town

Boats docked at Lumbarda Port on Korcula Island, Croatia

Lumbarda can be reached by taxi, boat, bus or by walking. Get details at the Korcula Tourist Information Office.

Vela Luka, Croatia

Boat in harbor at sunset in Vela Luka, Korcula, Croatia

Vela Luka, which translates to Big Port, is located on the western end of Korcula (the opposite end from Lumbarda). Although Vela Luka often gets a pass from tourists in favor of captivating Korcula Town, we think it can offer a lot to visitors (especially if you’re trying to avoid crowds).

Vela Splia Cave

Historic Vela Spila Cave in Vela Luka, Korcula, Croatia

Vela Spila – or The Great Cave – is one of the most interesting Korcula attractions. Artifacts found inside the prehistoric cave prove that it was used as a dwelling more than 20,000 years ago. The cave is just a 20-minute uphill walk from the port (make sure to pause and take in the gorgeous views of the bay along the way!).

To get to the cave, just follow the baby-blue cave markers up the side of Pinski Rat Mountain right to the cave entrance. A small fee is collected to enter the cave, which has a few explanatory signs in English. The ticket seller also has a book with photos of some of the cave discoveries.

Top Tip : The trail continues beyond the cave and wraps around the backside of the mountain to small villages. We spent about an hour taking different trails and working our way back down to the center of Vela Luka.

Hum Hill Hike

View of Vela Luka harbor from hillside on Korcula Island, Croatia

On the south side of the deep bay, Hum Hill rises over the town and sea. The Forteca – a 19th century Austro-Hungarian fortress – sits atop the hill. The fort is free to enter and provides an outstanding viewpoint. (We, unfortunately, did not make it to the top as we were running out of day light!)

To access the fort, a well-maintained 3-mile trail leads up the mountainside. The trailhead is found along the coastline, but to get there, trekkers need to walk inland around the old shipyard. For more information about the Hum Hill Korcula hike, see this article .

Northern Coastline Walk

On the north side of the port, a coastal path follows the shoreline past small beaches and secluded coves. After a brief trek through a forest, the path leads to the “Kissing Point” viewpoint, which is spectacular at sunset!

Vela Luka Sights

Vela Luka marina at sunset on Korcula Island, Croatia

We were drawn to the viewpoint hikes and shoreline walks, but the Vela Luka city center has a few attractions worth checking out, too!

Churches : Located in the heart of the town is the 19th century St. Joseph Church and bell tower. Along the southern coastline, visitors will find the Church of Our Lady of Good Health. The small church was built in the late 1800s after an outbreak of The Plague; behind the church is a small garden and statue.

Vela Luka mosaic tile work on Korcula, Croatia

Mosaic Tile Artwork : In 1968, Vela Luka hosted an international artist event called Artist’s Meeting of Painters. The attending artists were charged with creating mosaic tile work that was implemented in the sidewalks around the town center…where they still can be seen today.

Center for Culture : Utilizing a 19th century schoolhouse, the Center for Culture houses a small museum (featuring the findings from the cave) and hosts local events.

Jerolim Oil Products : Specializing in locally produced organic olive oil products, Jerolim was founded by a local couple.

Nearby Dalmatian Islands from Vela Luka

Watching sunset from Sail Croatia Almissa ship in Vela Luka Harbor, Korcula, Croatia

There are two very tiny and easily accessible Croatian islands from the Vela Luka port. These islands are reached via boat (or taxi boat). In our shoulder-season visit, there were no taxi boats running to the island…but we look forward to checking out these two islands on a return trip to Korcula!

Osjak Island, an uninhabited island, sits in the center of the harbor. Visitors go to explore the hiking trails and hidden coves. It takes 15 minutes by taxi boat to reach the island.

Proizd Island sits at the opening of the bay and is a 40-minute trip from the port of Vela Luka. Surrounded by dazzling blue water, visitors go to swim in the sea and soak in the sun on the nearly deserted island (there is one restaurant during peak summer season).

Standing at 1,667 feet, a shaded trail leads up Kom Hill. The view offers spectacular vistas over the island and sea. The Kom Hill trail begins at a farm on a goat path and then ascends through a forest to the peak. There is a parking lot and the hike takes about 2 hours roundtrip.

A gorgeous beach at the end of a deep cove, spending a day at the beach in Pupnatska Luka is one of the fun things to do on Korcula Island. There is a small fee for parking and 2 cafes (cash only for both).

Korcula, Croatia Weather

The weather in Korcula is a Mediterranean climate, where winters are mild with a little rain and summers are warm and dry. Average summer high temps are in the mid-80s and January is the coolest month, with average high temperatures reaching the low 50s.

Choosing Between Korcula or Hvar

Many Croatia tourists are limited on time and can only fit one island destination into their trip. The most common choice is to visit either Hvar or Korcula. We think that is a pretty tough call – and really encourage travelers to see both islands!

However, if it has to be one of the other, we think the decision should be based interests. Travelers who are interested in history and wine should visit Korcula Island. People who are interested in boating and nightlife might want to check out Hvar instead.

Read our guides on the Best Things To Do in Hvar Town and Stari Grad, Hvar to determine which is better for your Croatia trip!

Where To Stay on Korcula Island

We have stayed in Korcula Town twice and in Vela Luka once. We enjoyed both locations – and are pretty sure we would like staying in Lumbarda, especially during the summer. Choosing where to stay really depends on what is on your list of Korcula things to do.

That said, the island is fairly small and easy to get around. The longest distance is between Lumbarda and Vela Luka, which are roughly 30 miles apart. There are many places to stay in Korcula; all three towns have numerous hotels, many which have sea views.

Hotels in Korcula

We are sharing a few of the highly-rated Korcula hotels for your trip! But, before starting your search for prime places to stay in Korcula, Croatia, use our tips on Finding the Best Hotels .

How To Get to Korcula Island

Approaching Korcula Old Town by Boat in Croatia

Being an island – without an airport – the only way to get to Korcula is via boat. Ferries and catamarans to Korcula dock in Korcula Town and Vela Luka (but not Lumbarda). There are, however, marinas in all three towns, where yachts can moor.

Getting to Korcula by Ferry

There are two primary Korcula ferry companies: Jadrolinija and Krilo. The Korcula boat schedules can vary greatly by season and by day. Be sure to verify Dalmatian Island ferry times for when you’ll be traveling to Croatia. Ferries to Korcula depart from Split, Dubrovnik and Orebic (and stop at other islands along the way).

Tickets for both ferries can be purchased online or at the port. In the peak summer season, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance.

Ferry from Split to Korcula

Visitors traveling from Split to Korcula have a few options when it comes to ferry boats. Jadrolinija runs a catamaran between Split and Dubrovnik and docks in Korcula Town (summer season only). Jadrolinija also runs Car Ferry lines from Split to Vela Luka.

The tourist ferry company, Krilo, also runs two lines to Korcula Town, but only one runs year-round. The Korcula – Split ride takes about 2+ hours.

Ferry from Dubrovnik to Korcula

The Jadrolinija catamaran connects Dubrovnik to Split (via Korcula Town, Hvar and Bol). Krilo has seasonal ferry departures from Dubrovnik to Korcula Town. The ride between Dubrovnik and Korcula is about 2 hours.

Day Trip to Korcula Town

Visitors who want to take a Day Trip to Korcula Town can use the ferries, but it is only possible in the high season.

Day Trip from Split to Korcula

If taking a day trip from Split to Korcula in the summer season, use the Krilo Ferry. Two catamarans depart from the Split Port in the morning (one goes via Makarska and the other via Hvar Town) at 7:30 and 7:40am and both arrive to Korcula Town just after 10:00am. On the return trip, boats depart Korcula at 5:55pm and 6:35pm and arrive back in Split just before 9pm.

17 Incredible Day Trips From Split, Croatia by JetSettingFools.com

Day Trip from Dubrovnik to Korcula

If taking a day trip from Dubrovnik to Korcula (again, only possible during the peak summer season), use the Jadrolinija catamaran. The Jadrolinija departs Dubrovnik at 7:00am and arrives to Korcula at 9:00am; the return catamaran from Korcula to Dubrovnik departs Korcula at 7:25pm and arrives back in Dubrovnik at 9:25pm.

What To Do in Korcula in One Day

Visitors limited to just 1 Day in Korcula will need to make a concise trip plan to make the most of their time on the island. As the day trip ferries dock in Korcula Town, we recommend limiting your sightseeing to the town and immediate surroundings.

That said, with a well timed plan, it would also be possible to take a taxi or water taxi to Lumbarda to taste some wine or visit the beach. Just keep an eye on the time, as you don’t want to miss the ferry boat!
