An Introduction about Hoi An

Hoi An (meaning “peaceful meeting place” in Vietnamese) is a well-known tourist destination in Vietnam. Bus to Hoi An

By 2020, there was a public bus connecting Da Nang and Hoi An. It’s the cheapest way to get from a city to another. Now, it is not available anymore. Please follow up your website for updated information.

Many travelers don’t stay overnight in Hoi An, and instead, they choose a hotel in Da Nang. To visit Hoi An, they ride a motorbike. The distance between cities is some 30 kilometers, so the drive is from 45 to 60 minutes. The quickest way is the coastal road, namely Vo Nguyen Giap and Truong Sa in Da Nang, and then Lac Long Quan in Hoi An. Halfway, that is the Marble mountains.

From Hue, motorbike rental providers allow travelers to drop the bike in Hoi An (don’t have to ride back to Hue!) if self driving. Shuttle Bus

Shuttle buses run by electricity are new to Hoi An. Local authorities aim to reduce traffic congestion in town, especially in the evening and air pollution. The experience on a shuttle bus is more interesting than cars. The cost depends on the length of the drive, and number of passengers. If the group is bigger than 5 and the distance is smaller than 2 kilometers, the price is 10,000 VND per person. Small kids and toddles are free of charge. It’s exactly how much visitors pay when they move within Hoi An’s downtown. For further places, such as beaches or the coconut village, the price is higher, but not more than 40,000 VND per person. There are 2 simple ways to have this vehicle: hailing in main streets or coming to car parks.

Hoi An is small enough to cycle around. Many hotels provide free bicycles for the guests (come first, serve first, no reservation). If not available for free, the rental is really cheap. It’s around 1 USD for one day full. No doubt, the cheapest way to get around. Travelers can ride to the beaches, rice fields, Cam Thanh coconut village or Cam Kim island.

Anytime of the day, it’s possible to tour the Hoi An ancient town by bicycle. This Unesco heritage is in the list of the towns that are most friendly to bicycles worldwide. Late afternoon onwards, tourists coming from Da Nang visit the town and make it full of pedestrians. Therefore, riding a bicycle during that time is a little bit difficult.

Riding a motorcycle is a faster way to get somewhere than a bicycle. Rental price is really cheap, between 100,000 and 200,000 VND for one full day or 24 hours. Helmet (or maps) is provided. Brief History of Hoi An

Hoi An was known as a busy international trading town in Vietnam and Southeast Asia from 15 th to 19 th centuries. During that period, merchants and their sailing boats docked here, to exchange different products (spices, ceramics, silk, etc). They came from Japan, China, and Europe. Hoi An got its European name “Faifoo”. Heritage left by these nationalities are around its old town today.

Late 19 th century was the turning point in Hoi An’s history. Geological activities in the river estuary didn’t allow boats to easily access the town. Vietnamese kings also prohibited westerner’s boats to get there directly (have to stop at Da Nang before). They got worried about military power and religious missionaries from the west. For that reason, commerce in Hoi An declined. Since then, Da Nang has been replacing its role as the most important center of commerce in the area (until now).

During the colonial time, 19 th and 20 th centuries, French based in Hoi An and designed it as a provincial capital. Influences from French people are still seen today.

In 1999, Hoi An was added to the Unesco world heritage site list, together with My Son sanctuary. Since then, it has been popular with both local and foreign tourists. At the present, this little town draws millions of visitors although its population is only 120,000 people.

The Marble Mountains

Hoi An’s Countryside and Villages

Hoi An Travel Guide – Everything You Need to Know

Hoi An was probably our favourite stop in Vietnam and I am here to share a few insights into this beautiful town. I have written a Hoi An Travel Guide with everything you need to know to fully explore this town. Read on to find out more about the Hoi An Lantern Festival, the ever-so popular tailoring parlours, the best things to do in Hoi An, and where to stay!

How to Get to Hoi An

You can only access Hoi An by road, as there is no airport nor train station in the town. However, the good news is, it is only an hours drive from Da Nang’s airport. The airport has domestic links to many places throughout Vietnam and also has a number of International flights landing here daily. You can get a taxi from Da Nang airport which can be pre-booked for 250,000 VND. If you are staying in Da Nang city, then I recommend getting an Uber to Hoi An. It will cost you half the price!

TIP! Ubers are a very controversial topic in Asia and are not always ‘accepted’ among the locals. Most airports/hotels cannot arrange an Uber to pick you up, so you must arrange this yourself.

We took an Uber and arrived at our hotel, Estuary Villa, which was on the outskirts of the main town. We were staying by the river that runs through Hoi An and were only a 5-minute bike ride from the beach. The hotel provided us with free bikes to use, to get around more freely and a free shuttle bus to/from town on a night.

Discovering the Beauty of Hoi An – Hoi An Travel Guide

When we arrived in Hoi An, we were amazed by the relaxing vibe it possessed. We had previously been in the busy city of Ho Chi Minh, stayed in the deserted town of Mui Ne, and back to another busy city, Da Nang. All of which were incredible places, but there was something different about Hoi An.

Hoi An was the first place that we felt such a loving, welcoming feeling. As we wandered through the streets, there were many people sitting outside in the cafes enjoying a few rays. The beach was also a nice treat as there aren’t too many available to the public throughout the country.

Our first night we made our way to town in the shuttle bus alongside a handful of lovely people who were staying in our hotel. We arrived to see a busy town, full of colour and life.

There were lanterns everywhere, lighting up the streets. People wandered down each one completely mesmerised. The colours were endless, and everybody was stopping to take pictures. In the middle of the town runs the river. Many locals sit by the water selling floating candles to the passing tourists. They light them up and send them on their way, lighting up the entire place.

Try Local Food at the Street Markets

There is a big street market across the other side of the river, where locals are selling their handmade gifts, and homemade dishes. It is a perfect place to try a selection of Vietnamese cuisines as the choices are countless. Typically, that specific day I was craving, and had, a blooming banana pancake didn’t I. And some rice, of course, let’s not forget the rice! 😊

Hoi An Street Markets are definitely the best place to try samples of the local foods. It is easily the cheapest place to eat in Hoi An, and the food is cooked by their very own local families.

You may have heard of Hoi An before as it is ‘known’ for 2 main things: the Hoi An Lantern Festival, and the local tailoring shops.

Hoi An Lantern Festival

First of all, what is it? Hoi An already consists of hundreds, if not thousands of lanterns on a daily basis, so what makes this festival so special?

The Hoi An Lantern Festival is an event held on a monthly basis to celebrate the full moon. As many of you will know, the full moon plays a sacred role in the Buddhist calendar, as Buddah himself was born on a day of the full moon. The traditional beliefs that the full moon is a time to reflect on life decisions, relax and meditate, and most of all, worship their ancestors, is still honoured by hundreds of people throughout Asia to date.

The lanterns are a symbol of good luck, which locals have placed throughout the entire town, giving Hoi An its name: the town of Lanterns.

The festival is celebrated by lighting up the lanterns, and allowing them to float down the Thu Bon River, which runs through the centre of town. At 8pm all lights are turned off, leaving the lanterns to be the only source of light within the centre. Effectively, the lanterns light up the entire town, creating a magical glow and a lovely atmosphere. To accompany this, there is usually music being performed, games being played, and plenty of street food to go around.

TIP! The Hoi An Lantern Festival is held on the 14 th day of each lunar month.

If you can plan your trip around these dates I would highly recommend doing so. The Hoi An Lantern Festival is a great experience that shouldn’t be missed!

Tailor Made Clothes in Hoi An

I am not kidding when I say you can get absolutely ANYTHING made, and usually within 24-72 hours. When I say anything I mean dresses, to suits, to bikinis, accessories and even a pair of shoes.

These shops have become increasingly popular among tourists, as buying a tailor-made suit costs a third of the price compared to in our home countries. If you plan on getting something made (and you’re not a guy – it’s way easier for guys!) then have a plan before you get there. Make sure you have an idea about the design, colour, hem, etc. so you can beat the crowd and be prepared. If you are struggling, the ladies in the shops offer the best advice, so you are in good hands.

As it is becoming more popular, the locals are seeing an opportunity for an increase in price. Make sure to bring your bargaining head along with you, to keep things how you want them! Things vary in price but for example: we paid 1,356,645 VND ($80AUD) for a 3-piece suit and a silk tie!

TIP! There are hundreds of these parlours so make sure you shop around before you commit to buying anything. Chances are you can get the exact same thing down the street for $20AUD cheaper. It may not sound like a lot to you now, but $20AUD goes a long way in Vietnam! That can buy you 6 meals!

Hire a Bike

There are available bike tours which sound like a lot of fun. They are a great way to meet new people and explore the town in more depth. We hired bikes on our own which was still a good laugh. Everything is within a good distance so nothing is too far away

**Here’s a very attractive photo of myself from the day I hired a bike. The weather was beautiful, and all of a sudden it began to absolutely p*ss it down! It lasted a total of 10 seconds, but I was drenched to the bone! Oh, who doesn’t enjoy the tropical weather ;)**

Spend a Day at the Beach

The beaches in Hoi An are one of few that you will see throughout Vietnam. It is not a country known for its beaches, so when you find one – take advantage! There are many to choose from, so take a pick and enjoy your day 🙂

Visit the Japanese Bridge

This bridge dates back to the 1500’s but has since has some reconstruction. It is not a huge tourist attraction, but it is a nice little place to visit for a quick stop.

Day Trip to My Son

The My Son Sanctuary is known as a UNESCO world heritage site and is around an hours’ drive from Hoi An on scooter. It is probably quicker if you get a taxi. This site has been massively affected over the years as the result of several wars. Unfortunately, the most recent war with the Americans has destroyed it even more. There are still plenty of ruins to rummage through and many have even been re-built. I would only recommend visiting My Son if you are interested in its history. There is an entrance fee of 150,000 VND, and a parking fee to park up on site.

Where to stay in Hoi An – Hoi An Travel Guide

There are tons of places to stay in Hoi An that suit all budget-levels. If you prefer to be by the beach, then I recommend staying on the outskirts of town. Most of the hostels/hotels offer transport into the town centre so you can visit as you please. Taxis are also cheap making the journey in and out affordable if these services aren’t available. If you’d like to be in the centre to have time to fully explore Hoi An, then there are also plenty of options here too. The centre is only 10-15 minutes to the beach, so either one works perfectly!

For a night in a hostel/budget hotel, prices range from 160,000 VND to 290,000 ($9-17AUD). If you fancy something more ‘fancy’, the prices will naturally be higher.

TIP! If you are in a couple, or are a couple of friends, it always works out better to stay in a hotel. The price is evidently split in two for the room, meaning you get the luxuries a hotel can give, but for the price of a hostel bed.

We stayed in the Estuary Villa Hotel on the outskirts of the main town. We were on a bit more of a budget than usual, as we were funding a whole 3months of travel. Luckily, you can find 3-4* hotels including breakfast for around $15AUD a night in Vietnam! We came across this place online and liked the look of it.

Hoi An Travel Guide

As we arrived we were greeted by the most welcoming staff. We were upgraded for free as there were spare rooms available. The hotel has its own pool and breakfast was also included. There was a free bike hire, so we could get to the nearest beach more easily.

We paid $56AUD for 2 nights, between the 2 of us. It worked out at $14AUD a night each. For this price we received a private double room with an ensuite bathroom, free breakfast, WIFI, access to an outdoor swimming pool, free bike rentals and a free shuttle bus to town on an evening.

This hotel was a lovely little spot to stay and we couldn’t recommend it enough. It was very small, with only around 20 rooms, but we could not have been made to feel more welcome.

It helps the businesses to reduce operating costs, contribute to environmental protection and bring benefits to the community.

Plastic bottles are replaced by reusable glass bottles.

Hoi An city has set a target that Hoi An heritage sites, core area of Cham Islands – Hoi An World Biosphere Reserve, Tra Que vegetable village, Thanh Ha pottery village, Kim Bong carpentry village Cam Thanh coconut forest are recognized as a green destination by 2025.

The city also hopes 100% of staff in charge of tourism are trained about green and sustainable tourism.

The ancient town of Hoi An is located in Quang Nam, Vietnam, about 30km south of Da Nang city. Previously, in the 17th and 18th centuries, Hoi An was the busiest international trading port in Southeast Asia. However, by the 19th century, Hoi An was in a recession due to unfavourable water transportation. Therefore, the number of international ships and boats passing here decreased.

But also because of that Hoi An retains the ancient beauty, perfect integrity of an Asian trading port. In 1999, Hoi An was recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage. And since then, Hoi An tourism has grown and become an indispensable destination for international tourists coming to Vietnam.

2. Fujian Assembly Hall

The forerunner of the Assembly Hall is a small shrine worshipping the statue of Thien Hau Thanh Mau (the god blessing merchants overcome the ocean waves) picked up on the coast of Hoi An in 1697. Through the repeated restoration with the main contribution of the Overseas Chinese in Fujian State. The Assembly Hall became more brilliant and spacious, contributing to the appearance of the ancient architecture of Hoi An.

An interesting thing about the construction of the Cantonese Assembly Hall is that each part of this building was crafted in China, then transferred by boat and assembled into a complete shape in Hoi An. 4. Japanese Covered Bridge

Japanese Covered Bridge is the jewel in the heart of Hoi An. The bridge was built in the late 16th century and is called the Japan Bridge. In the middle of the bridge is a small temple to worship Huyen Thien Dai De. The bridge has a quite unique roof with decorative structures and patterns showing a harmonious combination between Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and Western architectural styles.

Location: The bridge crosses the creek flowing into the Thu Bon river adjacent to Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Tran Phu streets.

5. Old House Of Tan Ky

Built nearly 200 years ago, Tan Ky houses a typical architectural style of Hoi An townhouses with interiors divided into sections, each with its own function. The front of the house is the place to open the shop, the back is connected with the river wharf to be the place for importing and exporting goods.

The house is built by traditional materials and crafted by local carpenters and masonry, so it has its own characteristic, agile, elegant and cozy, and shows interaction with architecture styles in the area. On February 17, 1990, the Tan Ky Dynasty was granted as a National Historic-Cultural Monument.

6. Thanh Ha Pottery Village

In the 16th and 17th centuries, Thanh Ha was a very prosperous village. It was famous for ceramic and terracotta items being exchanged and wholesale throughout the central provinces of Vietnam. Pottery village originated from Thanh Hoa, after acquiring some technical capital, it has formed pottery village today. Main products are utensils for daily life such as bowls, bowls, jars, vases, ornamental pots, shapes of the breeds … with many designs, colours are very diverse and special. Especially, it’s lighter than other local similar products.

7. Thanh Ha Terracotta Park Museum

Situated in Thanh Ha pottery village just about 3 km to the west of the ancient town of Hoi An. Thanh Ha Terracotta Park was built in 2011, on the area of almost 6,000 square meters by the architect Nguyen Van Nguyen who was born and raised in the village. The park with traditional Vietnamese pottery made of terra cotta, including models of iconic buildings.

Also it is divided into five functional areas: Nam Dieu village, Creativity Workshop, Trade Promotion, Pottery Museum and An Outdoor Exhibition Area. Each space has its own story and reflects by the symbolic pictures, objects, artifacts, etc which make visitors can understand clearly of the 500-years of Thanh Ha Pottery village.

8. Cham Island

Cham Island or Cu Lao Cham is about 15 minutes on speedboat from Hoian and 1 hour on traditional wooden boat. It offers travellers a little getaway. It is UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The main island is Hon Lao, the largest and the only one inhabited. Spending one day or two days trip to Cham Island will offer you to have a relaxing on nice wild sandy beach of Bai Ong, Bai Huong. Also visit Hai Tang pagoda for more history of the island. Especially, Cham Island is very great for snorkeling and diving in Vietnam to see coral reefs as well as the diversity of marine creatures.

The best time to visit is from March to September.

9. Bay Mau Palm Forest

Bay Mau palm forest offers visitors an opportunity to discover the kingdom of palm. It looks like as the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre. This palm wetlands are 5km to the east of Hoi An City in Cam Thanh Commune, the site covers an area of 80ha surrounded by water. Bay Mau Palm forest is the green tourism area and the “lung” of Hoi An.

It is the salt-marsh ecological area with poetic scenery for sunset and the abundant flora and fauna. Also it is home to different kinds of marine life such as shrimps, crabs, fishes, snakes and mollusks.

10. Tra Que Organic Vegetable Village

Just 5km from Hoian ancient town, you escape from the bustling city just about 15 minutes by cycling. You will enjoy a farming area with nice weather and lovely people. It is Tra Que vegetable village. The great way to enjoy its peaceful and beauties, riding a bicycle will bring you all. You will see rice fields, glassy rivers, and lazy water buffaloes lounging in the mud.

You only need from one to three days to get your clothes made when the design is simple. And it can be up to a week for more complicated pieces. My Son Hindu Sanctuary or called My Son Hollyland is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where is 50km from Hoian ancient town and 90km from Danang city. It is the great sample of the ancient Champa civilization in Central Vietnam. It was an independent state from around the 2nd to the 17th century, at which time it was occupied by Vietnam.

The impressive Hindu-themed ruins feature many beautiful stone sculptures, temples and towers in tropical jungle surroundings. When visiting the My Son Champa Sculpture, you can see the skillful use of red bricks and especially the sandstone.

How To Go There?

Travel to hoi an by air.

From Danang International airport. It is the closest airport to Hoian, located in the heart of Da Nang city. It is 30 kilometres from Hoi An.

There are many flights in and out Danang airport daily. So travellers can choose with different options to Danang and then go ahead to Hoian.

Domestic flights: Buon Ma Thuot, Can Tho, Da Lat, Cam Ranh/Nha Trang, Hanoi, HCMC, Pleiku, Vinh, Hai Phong
International flights: Bangkok (Bangkok Airways, Vietnam Airlines), Beijing (China Eastern), Hong Kong (Dragonair; Hong Kong Express), Kunming (China Eastern), Macau (Air Macau), Seoul (Korean Air), Siem Reap (Silkair, Vietnam Airlines), Singapore(Silkair; Jetstar), Tokyo (Vietnam Airlines)

From Chu Lai airport: This airport belongs to Quang Nam Province. It takes 1 hour and 30 minutes (80 km) to reach Hoian ancient town.

There are some airlines have the flights to Chu Lai airport: Airlines, Vietjet Air và Jetstar.

Domestic flights: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh.

International flights: Bangkok, Vientiane, Beijing with Vietnam airlines, Lao airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airlines, HongKong Airlines, Singapore Airlines. Some have transit in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City.

The closest is Da Nang train station. It is 30 kilometres away from Hoi An. It is easy for the traveller to take a taxi and motorbike to Hoi An. There are many trains from North to South and vice versa with a stop in Da Nang.

Bus service to Hoi An is limited as most long-distance buses head to the major hub Da Nang. From Danang traveller can take a local bus or taxi to Hoi An.

Open bus tour companies have a schedule to Hoi An directly. Therefore, it is the best option for travel from Hanoi to Hoi An as well as from Ho Chi Minh to Hoi An. And the bus always stops at big cities like Mui Ne, Da Lat, Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hue, Quang Binh, Ha Noi.

When Is The Best Time To Go To Hoi An?

The best time to visit Hoi An is from February to April every year. It rains less, the climate is pleasant. Avoid going in summer because of the high temperature, very hot. The rainy season from October to November also has the disadvantage of wet space due to heavy rain.

You should visit Hoi An on the 14th, the full moon of the lunar calendar to attend the old town night. On this day of the full moon, all families in the old town of Hoi An will turn off the lights and light the lanterns. Although Hoi An ancient town is small, its culinary culture is extremely diverse.

Pho Hoi Chicken Rice

Dumpling-cauldron Cake or the white rose cakes are two types of bread with similar ingredients, usually eaten on a plate of cakes. The Cauldron Cake filling made from crushed ground shrimp mixed with a little pepper, garlic, onion, lemongrass and esoteric spices. The dumpling filling is made from pork, mushroom, sliced green onions and then fried with esoteric spices. Unlike the Southern sweet soup, Hoi An corn sweet soup does not cook with coconut water. Therefore, it has the original taste of corn, only when sprinkled with some juice to increase the fat. Cam Nam corn season is also the tea season, most especially from March to September each year.

Rice Paper (Rice Paper / Wet Rice Cake)

Similar to Thanh Tri rolls in Hanoi, instead of being thin rice paper with atrial fillers, in Hoi An, rice paper also has shrimp. When eaten, the cake is sprinkled with fragrant onion fat, served with silk rolls.

Where is Hoi An?

Hoi An, located in the heart of Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam, is approximately 860 km from Hanoi to the north and 865 km from Ho Chi Minh City to the south. Its strategic location along the North-South axis has made it a culturally rich and diverse town, where cultures from the two regions intersect. 1. Getting to Hoi An from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City

To reach Hoi An from either of the two major cities, you will first have to land in Da Nang, which is located 30 km away from Hoi An, as there is no airport in the ancient town. You can book flights with airlines such as Vietnam Airlines, Vietravel Airlines, and Vietjet Air, which operate routes from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang.

Another way to get to Da Nang from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is by train, with ticket prices ranging from $20 to $50 (470,000 to 1,200,000 VND). You have several options for train carriages, including 4-bed rooms and clean and comfortable V.I.P 2-bed rooms. The travel time varies from 14 to 20 hours, depending on the type of train you choose. If you have time and want to explore the country on the move, taking the train is a great option. You can book train tickets on the official website of the Vietnam Railway Corporation.

Buses are also an option for getting to Da Nang from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, with ticket prices ranging from $20 to $30 (470,000 to 700,000 VND). However, keep in mind that this mode of travel can be tiring and take a long time. Some recommended bus companies are Futabus, Phuc Thuan Thao Bus, and Quoc Hung Bus.

2. Getting to Hoi An from Da Nang

As soon as you arrive in Da Nang, there is a wide range of options to get to Hoi An.

Travel by bus

Bus number 1 from Da Nang can take you directly to the Hoi An Bus Station. You can refer to the bus route below to find the nearest bus stop.

Travelers can book a taxi on arrival in Da Nang City or the airport to go directly to Hoi An.

Cost: 400,000 VND – 500,000 VND ($17 – $21) for a 4-seat car or 500,000 VND – 600,000 VND ($21 – $25) for a 7-seater

Travel by motorbike

Riding a motorcycle can be a great option if you’re comfortable with it. Note that a motorcycle license is required. The route from Da Nang to Hoi An is scenic with good road conditions.

It is undeniable that Hoi An Ancient Town is a must-visit attraction in Hoi An. It is well-known for a Southeast Asian trading port dating back the 16th and 17th centuries. Nowadays, this old town appeals a large number of domestic and foreign travelers thanks to its peaceful atmosphere, charming beauty of restaurants, café shops and full of historic yellow and wood buildings in a traditional Chinese style. It was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Hoi An was recently ranked third among the list of the world’s top 25 cities in 2020 by Travel+Leisure Magazine. Tan Ky Old House was built in 1741 by a Vietnamese family, and has been preserved through 7 generations. The architecture of this house is combination of Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese styles. There are 4 small rooms in the house with different purposes: one for welcoming the Chinese merchants, one for living room, courtyard and bedroom. Especially, all are no windows.

This old house was designed by the most skillful artisans of the famous Kim Bong village at that time. Wood is the main material for the house but stone (from Thanh Hoa Province) and floor tiles (from Bat Trang ceramic village) are used in many details such as flooring, wall, furnishings… All of them make the house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Over 200 years old, Tan Ky Old House still remains unique features in the interior decoration and objects from ancient times. It is also recognized as a national historical-cultural relic in Vietnam in 1990.

Chua Ong Pagoda, also called Quan Cong Temple, was built in the middle of the 17th century. It was recognized as a “National Historic and Cultural Site” in 1991. This temple is dedicated to Quan Cong, who was an ancient Chinese general, lived in the time of “Three Warring Kingdoms” (3rd century AD). He was well-known for his talent, a talented, courage, loyalty, integrity, compassion and righteousness in the feudal time of China.

The pagoda’s structure consists of 3 parts: front hall, open yard and back hall and it followed the Chinese architecture at that time. Despite many restorations, the temple is almost kept the same original structure.

Phuc Kien Assembly Hall or Fujian Assembly Hall was built in 1690 by Chinses people living in Hoi An. It was served as a gathering place for the Chinese residents and traders from Fujian, China, then transformed into a religious site dedicated to Thien Hau Thanh Mau – the Goddess of the sea and the protector of sailors. Phuc Kien Assembly Hall is well-recognized for its gorgeous and sophisticated Chinese-style architecture in a vast space. The Assembly Hall is divided into separate areas including large ornate gate, colorful courtyard, lake, backside, backyard, 2 corridors and ornamental plant. There is full of statues, bronze bells, bronze drums and lacquered works of art engraved with Chinese characters… and a lot of animal pictures and statues such as dragons, unicorns, phoenix and turtles… The whole combination and arrangement of every element in the Phuc Kien Assembly Hall tend to imply the Chinese philosophy of happiness.

Hoi An’s iconic Japanese Covered Bridge on Thu Bon river

Japanese Covered Bridge, also known as Lai Vien Kieu or Chua Cau, is the unique architectural heritage built by Japanese traders in the 16th century. The bridge is covered with a wooden pagoda roof with decorative details reflecting the harmonious combination between Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Western architectural styles. In spite of several restorations over years, the Japanese Covered Bridge is well preserved and becomes an iconic symbol of Hoi An. The image of this famous bridge is printed on one side of 20,000 VND note. You may see many people holding it up while taking a photo with the bridge itself. Inside the bridge, there is a small temple dedicated to Tran Vo Bac De, the Taoist God of weather, who protects believers during earthquakes and floods.

Just 3km from Hoi An Ancient Town to the West, Thanh Ha pottery village can be reached by bicycle, motorbike or by boat along Thu Bon river. This ancient village was established in the 16th century when people from Thanh Hoa province came here to build a new life with their traditional craft pottery. Undergoing over 400 years, Thanh Ha pottery village is still preserved its original intact beauty and values. Today, there are not many villagers following the traditional profession but some artisans still love and conserve the ancient pottery-making techniques and also revive the pottery village to become a tourist attraction.

The products in Thanh Ha village are mainly household wares serving the daily life of the local people in domestic market. They are bowls, jars, pots and decorative wares. Tourists coming here will have opportunity to see pottery-making process, admire traditional terracotta products as well as try hands-on experience to make your own product. To avoid the heat and crowd of tour groups, it is suggested to visit the village on weekdays and in the morning.

Kim Bong is known as the most reputable carpentry village in Cam Kim commune, Hoi An. Most of the ancient architectures of Hoi An’s heyday was built by the talented carpenters of Kim Bong village. Originated from the North and also acquired some quintessence of Champa Kingdom, Chinese, Japanese sculptural traditions and of course, skillful hands of Vietnamese craftsmen, Kim Bong’s products have become more and more ingenious. For many years, Kim Bong village has developed vigorously and formed 3 groups of artisans: ancient architectural construction, shipbuilding and civil wooden furniture.

Stunning An Bang beach with white smooth sand and clear blue water

An Bang Beach is one of the best beaches in Hoi An with the wild beauty of white smooth sand, green trees along the beach and several bamboo basket boats. My Son Sanctuary is a group of temple-towers of Cham people, an imperial city during the Champa Kingdom. It was officially recognized as the UNESCO’s World Heritage in 1999. Nestling in a narrow valley surrounded by mountains, My Son Sanctuary comprises 70 architectural works including temples and towers which connect to each other with complicated red brick designs. Each group has a main temple worship Linga – a symbol of Shiva, one of senior triple gods in Indian Hinduism. The main tower is for the deities of Champa people, and the smaller tower is for worship of Champa’s king.

According to records on the stone stele, the prime foundation of the ancient My Son architectural complex was a wooden temple to worship the Diva Bhadresvera genie. Through stone stele and royal dynasties, they proved My Son to be the most important Holy Land of the Cham people from the late 4th to the 13th centuries. Tra Que village is named after the sweet scented vegetables that spice up the everyday meals of the Hoi An people. This village was formed 300 years ago, surrounded by De Vong River and Tra Que Lagoon. Thanks to the special condition of rich soil and water, the village is famous for planting many kinds of vegetables and herbs such as lettuce, water spinach, cabbage, basil, coriander, fish lettuce… Thanks to a kind of algae found only in a lagoon in this village, Tra Que herbs and vegetables look so fresh and green. For Vietnamese, Tet is a nostalgic time, filled with childhood memories of visits from relatives, delicious treats, lucky money, new clothes, and days of fun with the whole family together. Every year local people prepare weeks in advance for Tet Nguyen Dan , the morning feast on the first day of the Lunar New Year.

Pagodas, houses, and shops all over Hoi An are cleaned, rinsed, and repaired. Flower markets, and food stalls spring up on sidewalks. Housewives shop for ingredients for family feasts, adorn altars and decorate the home. Men settle dues, get haircuts, and wash their motorcycles.

The sight of kumquat trees bouncing on the backs of motorbikes is a sign Tet is around the corner. Every home in Hoi An displays a kumquat tree in its entrance as a symbol of fruitfulness and prosperity. Kumquat trees are carefully grown to yield big, orange fruits, and the branches are often hung with greeting cards and lucky symbols.

Fresh flowers and plants are an important part of Tet decorations. You’ll see marigolds, sunflowers, daisies, and chrysanthemums in noble yellow hues all over Hoi An. New year wishes are penned in calligraphy and draped from doorways. Local people in Hoi An also welcome the holiday with lanterns, red envelopes, bamboo poles, and strings of fireworks.

Many special foods are served during the Tet holiday, but pride of place is always given to banh chung and banh tet . These steamed sticky rice cakes, filled with crushed mung beans and fatty pork, are savored with pickled onions and hot green tea. Families stock up on watermelons and fruits, Vietnamese ham, whole boiled chickens, Tet jams, and dried fruits for the coming feasts.

Marking the holidays together

By the time the day before Tet arrives the whole province and country is ready to celebrate together. Everyone returns to their hometowns in time to be with parents and grandparents. Last-minute treats and decorations are added, and the scent of incense fills as countless altars are set up to honor ancestors and the kitchen gods.

In Hoi An, the last night of the outgoing year is marked with dances and festivities in the Hoi An Ancient Town. Beautifully dressed families with children wearing colorful new ao dai join folk games and snap photos. The excitement builds with special shows and songs in the hours before midnight, and then fireworks explode above the tiled roofs of the Ancient Town, the Thu Bon River, and the crowds of happy people.

The first days of any new year are an auspicious time. Families stay home and feast together. Elders give lucky money to young ones, and everyone shares wishes for the new year. Most people visit pagodas and communal houses, and stop by relatives and teachers. After the new year has been properly ushered in, the holiday is for relaxing and having fun together.

In 2024, February 8 to 15 is a public holiday in Vietnam. Many businesses will close for this period and the days before and after. Tour companies and restaurants often close during the holiday, as staff return home to be with their families. If you are traveling during this time, book your transport and accommodation well in advance. Here are a few more tips:

Make uninvited visits to local people’s homes in the first days of the new year
Argue, bargain, speak negatively or get into debates with others
Sweep your house or any local person’s house in the first day of the new year

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers will start the 2024 NFL season in novel fashion and end it in a familiar way.

The NFL unveiled the schedule for the upcoming season on Wednesday night. As was revealed last month , the Packers will kick off the season against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil. That’s the novel part.

Now, the familiar ending: The Packers will end the season just like last season, with a Week 17 game at the Minnesota Vikings and a Week 18 home game against the Chicago Bears.

“We’re excited. We're excited to have a plan for the season,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said as part of the team’s official schedule release . “The schedule's the schedule. Our mindset is we gotta be our best regardless of when we play, where we play, but we are excited to be able to map out our plan.”

Here’s the 18-week slate, which includes nine games at Lambeau Field, seven true road games and a Week 10 bye.

Week 1: vs. Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil – 7:15 p.m., Friday, Sept. 6. (Peacock)

Week 2: vs. Indianapolis Colts – noon Sunday, Sept. 15. (Fox)

- The Packers will return from Brazil to host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2. The Colts haven’t trekked to Wisconsin for a September game since the Lombardi era.

- Rise and shine: After the Brazil game, the Packers will play three consecutive noon games. In fact, their first four home games will start at noon.

“Yeah, our guys better wake up with their piss hot, like I've said before,” LaFleur said. “They gotta get ready to go. I do think the preseason, we'll have an early kick game (against Baltimore on Aug. 24) to get those guys acclimated with that rhythm.”

- There are no three-game homestands or road trips. The Packers will play back-to-back home games twice and back-to-back road games only once.

- The Packers will play what might be an unprecedented four consecutive primetime games: the Miami Dolphins (Thanksgiving) and Detroit Lions on Thursday nights, the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night and the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.

“That will definitely be a tough four-game stretch," LaFleur said. "Going into the season, those are four teams that I think project to be very tough football teams. But it is nice to have two of those, at least, at home with San Francisco and then following it up with Miami on Thanksgiving, which is great to have a Thanksgiving night game in Lambeau.”

- Speaking of primetime games, colossal NFC home games against the Lions in Week 9 and the 49ers in Week 12 will not be played under the lights. Rather, they are set for 3:25 p.m. kicks.

- Five of the six division games will be played during the second half of the season.

- The game against Miami will mark just the third Thanksgiving home game in franchise history.

- The three NFC North home matchups are Gold Package games.

- The Packers will travel the 10th-most air miles ; the trip to Brazil makes up a big chunk of that, obviously, though they do have West Coast games at the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks.

- The toughest stretch? That’s obvious .

- The easiest stretch? Week 2 against the Colts, who have an inexperienced second-year quarterback (Anthony Richardson), Week 3 at the Tennessee Titans, who have an inexperienced second-year quarterback (Will Levis) and Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings, who might be starting a rookie quarterback (J.J. McCarthy).

Here are the travel purchases that will earn bonus points, according to the Amex Green Card's terms:

Campgrounds
Third-party travel websites (i.e., Orbtiz, Expedia, Priceline)
Travel booked through amextravel.com
Vacation rentals (with exceptions—see below)

That's a pretty strong list — but let's see what purchases won't count as travel with your Amex Green card.

What doesn't count as travel on the Amex Green?

Amex's terms clearly specify that timeshare purchases will not count as travel.

Additionally, whether or not something counts as travel depends on how the merchant codes when you make your purchase. According to Amex's terms:

Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. A purchase will not qualify for additional points if the merchant's code is not eligible.

This won't be an issue for most purchases, but it could be, depending on where you make the transaction. For instance, if you purchased a tour ticket from a convenience store, it likely wouldn't code as travel and would not earn any bonus points.

Another common area of confusion when it comes to determining travel purchases is home-sharing and vacation rental sites such as Airbnb , Homeaway and VRBO .

These will usually code as travel and earn bonus points, but some TPG staffers and readers have reported inconsistent experiences with these purchases.

Bottom line

The Amex Green Card has impressive bonus-earning on travel, transit and dining purchases . But before you put a big travel purchase on this card, ensure it falls under Amex's travel category and know that vacation rentals are hit-or-miss.

Fortunately, the travel category is broadly defined for the Amex Green card — great news for earning the most points possible.
