The Culture Trip is one of the best free travel guides on the internet today. It covers most cities in the world, with an emphasis on helping tourists discover the history and culture of that place in non-traditional ways.

Each destination has multiple articles and videos, all of which is original content for The Culture Trip. It lets you create a wishlist of items to see based on these. Some cities have full guides that are as good as any travel agent's efforts. I'd recommend downloading the app because you can then save articles and videos offline, which can help save data when you're in a foreign country.

3. Where Would You Go? (Web): Ask Friends to Plot a Map for You

Google Maps has made it easier than ever to find your way around a city. So much so that if fellow travelers and locals told you where to go on a map, you'd manage the rest alone. That's exactly what you can ask friends for with Where Would You Go (WWYG).

WWYG doesn't require you to register, yet creates a unique map for you. Add your point of origin or first stop, your final destination, and a few preferences like the number of hours you're okay with traveling between two places or whether you'd prefer to stay in one place.

With your input, WWYG will create a map with a unique URL. Share this URL with your friends, or even on travel forums. People can add spots they think are particularly interesting, along with a comment on why they recommend it. WWYG can create the best possible route for you to see all of these points, but I'd still use Google Maps for that part of the exercise.

4. TravelChime (Web): Planner and Mapper, Especially for Groups

Whether you're traveling alone or in a group, it's a good idea to map all your points of interest in one app. TravelChime lets multiple users create a common itinerary, although you can use the app as an individual too.

The easy interface of TravelChime makes it special. Once you sign up and invite your friends to edit it, you can create lists, such as places to visit, food and drinks, etc. Now search for a place and add it. You can also use Google guides, available within the app, to add common touristy points of interest.

Like WWYG, you can ask non-group friends for advice by sharing the link to your map. But they will need to register or login with Facebook or Google.

The best part about TravelChime? Once you're done building the itinerary, you can export it to Google Maps. It's a unique map that you and your friends can follow, with all the places of interest mapped neatly on it.

5. FreeTour (Web): Find Free Walking Tours and Budget Activities

Most major cities have volunteers and guides that conduct free walking tours of certain parts of the city. It can be difficult to find these with a Google search. FreeTour aggregates major budget-friendly activities in one place.

The app lets you filter the activities by price, rating (powered by TripAdvisor), languages, and categories. Apart from walking tours, you can try cruises, day trips, food and drink, nightlife, private cars, or Segway tours. Interesting activities can be added to your favorites to check later.

Each activity has a detailed description, along with ratings from customers and user reviews. And there's a precise map pin for the meeting point. FreeTour has a large community, so you will find reviews and ratings for almost every activity, which makes it easier to find out information.

There are very few third-party apps that deserve to keep a long-term spot on your iPhone’s Home Screen, but Wanderlog, the best travel app I’ve ever used, has become a necessity for planning my next trip. 

With a huge birthday celebration focused around New York City’s pizza on the horizon, Wanderlog has turned my iPhone 15 Pro Max into the perfect travel companion that allows my partner and I to collaborate in real-time as we set out to make our itinerary. 

As someone who is incredibly disorganized and loves to just go with the flow when on vacation, Wanderlog has given me a new way of thinking about my trips and I’m excited to share how cool it is with iMore readers. Here’s how you can plan your next vacation using Wanderlog and why this travel app deserves a dedicated space on your iPhone’s Home Screen.

How to plan your dream vacation with Wanderlog

How to create travel lists in Wanderlog

Now that you’ve created your trip, it’s time to add places to visit, restaurants to eat at, shops, or basically anything you want to do on your vacation. Wanderlog’s workflow lets you create lists with the places you want to visit or things you want to do and then create an itinerary so you’ve got a structured plan for your vacation. For me, the main plan for this trip is to eat pizza, so we’ve made a list of all the pizza joints we want to go to. Here’s how to make a travel list:

• From your main trip page tap the + icon in the bottom right
• Tap New list
• Give your list a name. I’ve called my pizza list “Pizza”
• Now type the name of a place in the Add a place search field
• Tap the place you want to add to your list

As you can see from my “Pizza” list below, I’ve added all of the best pizza restaurants that I want to go to across Manhattan and Brooklyn. In my planning, I’ve created multiple lists for different purposes such as coffee shops, bakeries, bars, shops, and museums to name a few.

If you’re struggling for ideas, Wanderlog has a built-in section with user-created travel guides and gives you loads of options to learn about new and fun places to visit while on vacation. To access these guides simply tap Explore in the top bar. From each guide, you can add recommendations to your lists by simply tapping Add.

How to visualize your trip in Wanderlog

My favorite feature of Wanderlog is the ability to see my travel lists on a map which makes it easy to visualize distance and see what area the majority of the things I want to visit are in. After using Wanderlog for a few weeks I decided to purchase the Pro membership for $5.99 a month which allows me to export these maps into Google Maps as well as use some handy AI features (more on that later). That said, Wanderlog allows you to select between all your lists and easily get to grips with your surroundings if you’ve never visited a place before. Here’s how to do it:

• Tap the map icon above the create a list button in the bottom right
• Swipe down to see a full map
• You’ll now see all your list locations on a map

I find Wanderlog most useful when I’m filtering between lists, so here’s how to select a specific list to see on the map:

• Tap the hamburger icon in the top right
• Uncheck all lists by tapping the Your places box
• Select the list you want to see on the map

As you can see I’ve now got all of my pizza joints on a map and it’s easy to see exactly where they are. As I have the Pro version of Wanderlog I can tap the Google Maps icon to export my whole trip, this is amazing as I find Google Maps the most reliable map application on iPhone — even more so than Apple Maps .

Creating your itinerary with Wanderlog

Ok, so you’ve created your travel lists, now what? Wanderlog’s itinerary feature allows you to plan each day of your vacation as well as a neat AI route optimization tool for Pro members. Head to the Itinerary tab in the top bar to get started. You’ll now see all the days of your vacation, they’ll be pretty empty just now but it’s easy to fill them up. You can either manually add places from your lists by tapping Add a place or use Wanderlog’s magic to automatically fill up your days. To automatically fill up your itinerary, tap Auto-fill day and watch as Wanderlog sets out a list of things for you to visit. I’ve found that starting with the auto-fill feature and then manually adding more locations is a great way to plan.

Once you’ve created your itinerary (whether manually or automatically), the Pro membership allows you to optimize your route to visit places more efficiently. To do so:

• Tap Optimize route
• Select your Start point and End Point
• Wanderlog will use AI to optimize your route

Once your route has been optimized you can see it on the map by filtering based on your itinerary day just like we did previously for our pizza list above. This is a great way to see where and how to get around any city efficiently and it has proven to be a great tool for planning this NYC vacation.

Wanderlog is so easy to navigate that you’ll learn the best way to use it just by digging into the app. There are other features like an AI chatbot to ask questions that make Wanderlog a joy to use especially when planning a trip of a lifetime. 6 Apps For Finding The Best Camping Spots

C amping is a favorite pastime for many people, whether they're doing it solo or with family. In doing so, though, usually the hardest and most time-consuming part is trying to find a campsite. There are many different types of campsites, too, so it can get a bit overwhelming, especially trying to use older websites that either haven't upgraded their technology in a while or are still going off of old reviews.

Aside from the essential apps you need before a camping trip , there are several apps out of there that are actively being used by campgrounds and camping enthusiasts who give current reviews and add photos, so you'll never be too surprised once you get to your campsite. Based on personal experience and various reviews from both IOS and Android users, here are six of the best apps to help you find camping spots. These apps are for both designated campgrounds and dispersed camping. The methodology we used to select these apps will be explained in more detail at the bottom of the article.

Campendium is an exceptionally well-known guide for all types of camping styles, whether you're looking for an off-grid camping spot on National Forest land or a designated campground with all the amenities. If you browse Campendium's app, you'll find right away that you'll need to input the area you want to camp in first. You can either type it in or browse through the map to find the spot. You'll want to go through the filter selection process so you can input the type of camping you want to find, the price, and online booking availability. They even have the option of searching for dump stations, which is a must if you're hauling a black water tank.

There is a Roadpass Pro upgrade that you can do, which is $60 a year. It gives you an ad-free experience along with overlay maps to see National Parks, National Forests, and public lands. The app comes with 4.8 out of five stars from over 17,000 reviewers and can be used with both IOS and Android phones. However, you can also use the web browser version to get even more information and check out articles and guides for camping.

The Dyrt works similarly to many of the other camping apps. When you open the app, you can set your location and add the dates you'll be needing any reservations for. In the filters section, you can set the distance, type, rating, and more for a campground. Once everything is set, browse through photos and book your next camping experience.

However, that's about as far as you can go with The Dyrt app for free, which is fine if searching and booking a campground is all you need to do. If you need more access, though, the Pro membership, which costs $36 per year, has many more features. If you're a digital nomad who likes to spend their camping days off-grid on public land and other free camping areas, 

The Dyrt Pro gives you information for over 5,000 drive-in-accessible free camping locations along with cell service maps so you can make sure you're still connected while you work. Additionally, there are discounts of up to 40% off on over 1,000 campgrounds. The Dyrt has a 4.5 out of five-star rating from over 21,000 reviews and can be found on both Apple and Android phones.

iOverlander

Unfortunately, many camping apps require you to upgrade to receive all the cool benefits it has. Luckily, iOverlander is one you don't. It's a fairly straightforward app with a plethora of information for your next camping experience. When you open the app, which can be found on both IOS and Android , you'll see the option to search on a map or as a list. Whichever you choose, it will open, and you'll be able to search for campsites from there. In the filter option, you can toggle on everything from established campgrounds to wild camping, which is your dispersed free camping on public lands. You can even turn on options like propane fill-up locations, water, and dump stations. It has everything you need when you're camping plus some.

Additionally, if you click on a campsite or other amenity, there will be recent reviews that will indicate if the site is still open and how the experience was. Many users will even upload photos for reference. Reviews for this app are a bit on the lower side, being around 3.5 out of five stars. However, iOverlander has been personally used for over two years of nomadic off-grid travel, and it is definitely a personal recommendation.

Recreation.gov

Another completely free app to download from either the App Store or Google Play is Recreation.gov. This is the go-to app if you need to reserve tickets, tours, and permits, along with making reservations for campgrounds. There's a huge plus side when using this app to search for campgrounds — you can use your America the Beautiful pass to get discounted rates. These annual passes are known for getting into National Parks for free.

The ratings for this app are high, with 4.9 out of five stars from over 100,000 users. This is because the app is extremely user-friendly. If you create an account, the app will be able to remember all the cool places you went, which is good if you want to go back at some point. However, you still have the option of continuing as a guest instead. Keep in mind, though, that this website does not find free dispersed campsites, so if that's what you're looking for, you'll need to seek out a different app.

Looking for a cool camping experience in your town's backyard or something affordable with a unique spin? The Hipcamp IOS and Android apps offer an extensive variety of camping opportunities, from staying on a host's impressive land to renting out a glamping-style tree house in the backcountry. The service has a cumulative 4.7 out of five stars from over 25,000 reviews and is user-friendly. All you need to do on the app is input the location and search through the available camping options. The campsites will consist of public campgrounds and private lands owned by the hosts such as farms and wineries. There is also a mix of hook-up availability and dispersed camping, so the options are endless.

To add to the experience, Hipcamp's website has more information you may find useful when you plan your next trek. For example, for the 2024 solar eclipse, Hipcamp has designated which campsites will be the best for the experience. You can find the resource on the main page . A section on the main page can guide you to choose a spot for the best stargazing in the country. Hipcamp is more than a reservation site — you'll be planning the best camping experience in no time.

Harvest Hosts

If you love taking your cool RV out, more than likely, you love camping out in nature. However, it doesn't hurt to spice it up every once in a while. Harvest Host, which can be found on IOS , Android , and online , is an app that can help elevate your next camping trip . The campgrounds associated with Harvest Hosts allow you to stay in unique locations like wineries, museums, breweries, and farms. It does require a membership, $99 per year, to use the app and book stays, but with the membership comes no camping fees and unlimited stays with over 5000 hosts.

There are a couple of requirements when camping with Harvest Hosts, though. You must bring a contained RV to stay on any property — this means no tents, overlanding, or car camping. Also, pop-up campers are prohibited. Additionally, cooking and bathroom facilities must be contained inside the RV. However, you are allowed to bring pets as long as they stay on a leash or lead. For reviews, both the app and the business itself are high due to the overall experience and how user-friendly everything is. All you have to do is search for a type of location you want to stay at, check for availability, and reserve it. Your reservation will be saved in the app for check-in time.

The camping apps discussed in this article were selected after thorough research of the technology. Additionally, personal experience finding campsites with the apps and high reviews from consumers who have downloaded and used the apps were taken into consideration. It's just the latest instance in which this distinctive phenomenon has been documented. ESA's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter has also captured visual evidence of the spidering effect, as has NASA.

What are the 'spider' formations really?

The features known as "spiders" form when the weather starts to warm during the Martian springtime.

As the sunshine falls on layers of carbon dioxide deposited over the dark winter months, the ice begins to melt and the warmth causes the lowest layers of ice to turn to gas. The carbon dioxide gas warms and builds up before eventually breaking through slabs of overlying ice, dragging dark dust with it to the surface that shatters through like a geyser.

When the dust settles back down, it etches patterns into the surface and beneath the ice that manifest as dark blotches resembling the spindly legs and bodies of spiders.

The process is unlike anything seen on Earth.

ESA's Mars Express rover captures latest sign of 'spiders'

The latest images of the formations, which are channels of gas measuring 0.03 to 0.6 miles across, were most recently captured by ESA's Mars Express rover , which arrived at the planet in 2003.

The formation of dark spots indicating the presence of "spiders" was spotted in Inca City, a region nicknamed for its resemblance to the Inca Ruins of Earth.

Another of ESA’s Mars explorers, the  ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter  (TGO), has previously imaged the spiders’ tendril-like patterns especially clearly in 2020 in a nearby region. While the Mars Express view shows the dark spots on the surface, the TGO perspective captured the web-like channels carved into the ice below.

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter also captured images in 2018 showing the "spiders" beginning to emerge from the landscape.

In the Mars Express image, the dark spots can be seen creeping across the towering hills and expansive plateaus of the mysterious Inca City discovered in 1972 by  NASA’s Mariner 9 probe . While scientists aren't exactly sure how the ridges and walls formations of Inca City came to be, it's theorized to be the remnants of sand dunes turned to stone.

In 2002, NASA's Mars Orbiter revealed  that Inca City is part of a large circle approximately 53 miles wide – suggesting the formation is the result of a space rock crashing into the surface and creating a crater. Faults that rippled through the surrounding plain could have filled with rising lava that has since worn away, revealing a formation resembling ancient ruins.

It takes up to two years to get your workspace just perfect, according to a new study.

Ahead of Get Organized Day on April 26, the poll of 2,000 U.S. office workers found only 40% are ‘very satisfied’ with their current workspace, be it from home or from an office. 

Those who were unsatisfied blamed the lack of space (48%), back pain from their chair (34%), and their area being too messy (32%).

Overall, 79% of people take pride in their workspace setup and 86% see their workspace have a “huge” or “moderate” impact on their happiness.

Commissioned by  Mind Reader  and conducted by OnePoll, the study found 83% feel more productive if their workspace is organized and — if it were more organized — believe they could increase their productivity by 38%.

Three-quarters said they’d even consider sharing their workspace with a famous daytime talk show host if they could.

Top picks for celebrity co-workers include Drew Barrymore (21%), Kelly Clarkson (19%) and Jennifer Hudson (15%).

Over half (58%) said they were “professionally organized” but admitted they’re personally chaotic.

In fact, people felt the most organized in their work (61%) and least organized in their mental health (27%).

Compared to other aspects of their life, 77% said their workspace is more organized than the rest. Enough so that 47% believe their loved ones would be surprised to see just how organized their workspace is.

Respondents also shared the trends they’ve tried in the past five years to help keep them organized: decluttering their digital space (35%), minimalism (32%) and using space-saving or multi-functional products (27%).

As a result, 83% swear the trends they’ve tried have effectively improved their organizational skills.

“It’s natural for us to feel more productive when we’re in an environment that is comfortable and organized,” said Glenn Goldberg, Head of Marketing at Mind Reader. “Our goal is to offer simple solutions to daily workspace problems that will have a big impact on organization, creativity and productivity. ‘Get Organized Day’ is a moment in time to motivate people to reorganize their workspaces and embrace that fresh feeling of productivity that comes as a result.”

The survey also found that where one works matters.

Nearly half (47%) said they work remotely to some capacity of their job. 

If they’re working from home, 59% said they still prefer to work from a desk, while others change spots throughout the day (18%), work from their dining room (17%) or exclusively from bed (16%).

Remote workers said the best parts of working from home are not having to commute (50%), dressing how they want (48%) and feeling more productive and organized (29%).

More than a quarter (28%) said they work in a hybrid environment, splitting their time between their home and an office for their job.

Comparing the two locations, 40% said their in-office workspace is more organized, while 29% said their home workspace is more organized.

However, hybrid workers spend more time customizing their at-home workspace than their office workspace (35%, compared to 27%).

The best parts of working in person or in an office setting are feeling more engaged with coworkers (37%), feeling more productive (29%) and feeling more organized (29%).

“No matter if your workspace is at home or in an office, it’s important for it to meet your needs and feel like your individual space,” continued Goldberg. “By implementing trending, ergonomic or organizational accessories into your workday, we hope it will increase efficiency and create an environment that makes you feel your best.”
