Stability Tour Putter Shaft

ShaftWorks 2019

Historically ignored, the putter shaft became a hot topic in 2019. While Breakthrough Golf Technology launched the original Stability Shaft in 2018, it wasn’t until earlier this year – in part due to the release of Odyssey’s Stroke Lab offering – that golfers became aware of alternatives to the steel putter shaft. Initial tests by MyGolfSpy suggested that while the Stability Shaft wasn’t a cure-all, it could be beneficial for some golfers.

The putter shaft market is ripe for innovation. Consider that there aren’t many golfers who believe the driver shaft doesn’t matter. And while the difference in the impact speed between a driver and a putter is significant, it’s probably worth noting that the putter shaft hasn’t changed much in decades, even though putter head weights have increased significantly. It’s also true that the shaft that’s in your putter almost certainly isn’t there for performance reasons. Whatever the manufacturer could get for the lowest price is what has traditionally gone in your putter. That particular paradigm is shifting, albeit slowly.

Though circumstantial, the fact that Breakthrough Golf Technologies has launched an alternative version of its Stability Shaft suggests some measure of success with the original version.

Stability vs. Stability Tour

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

“Introducing a tour model is just a natural progression of the brand. Stability clearly has filled a void in the putter category and now golfers who want to play exactly what the pros play will have that option with Stability Tour.” Barney Adams, Breakthrough Golf CEO

So how does the new Stability Tour differ from the original Stability Shaft? We don’t have a data-heavy, head to head comparison of the original vs. tour model yet, so for now, we’ll concern ourselves with how the shafts differ on paper.

To refresh your memories, the original Stability Shaft was designed to be ultra-stable, and more able to resist flex and torque, and ultimately, provide more consistent putting characteristics. A few bits of engineering and details of the multi-material construction aside, the functional talking points of the original Stability Shaft were that it was stiffer and heavier than conventional putter shafts. With that came claims of lower dynamic loft, a more consistent stroke, and tighter dispersion with more putts falling in the hole. The results of our test didn’t suggest unilateral improvement with the Stability Shaft, but we did see a modest improvement at five and ten feet, as well as indicators of a stroke that was generally more consistent. For some, installing the Stability Shaft led to quantifiable improvement , and while that wasn’t true for all, nobody suffered for using it either.

So what does the Tour shaft bring as compared to the original? Let’s take a look at the new aesthetics, the reported performance qualities, and a little bit of Dave Rolls Balls insight.

Improved Aesthetics

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

With the Stability Tour, we see a much more subdued appearance. The original Stability Shaft has a much more ornate appearance, in my opinion, with the aluminum connector and steel shaft tip detracting from the overall look. It sounds trivial, but visual distractions can influence the golfer. Case in point, a few years ago, PING reduced and repositioned their shaft band after an eye-tracking test saw golfers’ eyes moving from the ball to the shaft band during the stroke. Frankly, I didn’t much care for the multi-material look.

That being said, I love the look of the new Stability Tour. It’s all black, from the bottom of the grip to the attachment point on the putter. Additionally, all of the graphics are on the underside of the shaft, making for a clean, and likely non-distracting look at address. Simply put, the new Stability Tour shaft looks like an upgraded shaft. While you can argue that this doesn’t matter, if I’m spending money to upgrade my putter shaft, I want it to look like an upgrade.

As it relates to performance, the overall diameter of the shaft has been reduced by 13%, and the total weight has dropped by 10-grams. The balance point has been raised as well, so the swing weight is much closer to what golfers are accustomed to with standard steel shafts.

But What Does It Do?

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

Size Matters

Perhaps the most significant do of the Stability Tour compared to the original is what I just said above – it feels more like a  traditional shaft . By resizing the shaft, BGT now has a shaft that has a diameter and balance point closer to conventional steel. While I interpret feels different  as an indicator of  doing something different , I also know that there is a point where it feels  too different .

Most of us have tried putters in the shop, with some of them only lasting a couple of balls before being designated to the nope pile because they felt too weird. Perhaps the redesigned geometries of the Stability Tour shaft put it in a place where it feels different, but not too different.

According to Breakthrough Golf Technologies, the Stability Tour shaft is still significantly stiffer than steel. The company puts the number at 97% stiffer, which leads to better control and less twisting . Bear in mind, a good bit of this comes down to the relationship between head weight and shaft flex. As head weight increases (as has been the trend in the putter category for more than a decade), the effective flex of the shaft becomes weaker. Putter head weights have increased, but the weight of putter shafts hasn’t changed in any appreciable way. What that means is that golfers are putting with shafts that play softer than ever before.

This is why the increased stiffness of the Stability Tour (and the Odyssey Stroke Lab) actually matters. BGT says the added stiffness equates to an 82% improvement in returning the face square at impact, and a 54% increase in forgiveness on off-center hits because a stiffer shaft twists less). Again, we haven’t yet gathered any data, but the logic is sound.

Dave Rolls Balls: Testing The Stability Tour

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

As I mentioned above, I don’t have any hard data to share with you, so keep in mind we’re working exclusively from observation here. These are my thoughts after BGT shafted my trusty Bettinardi Queen B5 with the Stability Tour shaft.

The most foundational, and maybe most significant observation is that the QB5 shafted with the Stability Tour shaft feels different than the stock shaft but still familiar. Though perhaps not unexpected, it’s not a small detail. If you are looking to make a change in your putting, something that dramatically alters feel may not be desirable.

While it’s not apples to apples, I spent a good deal of time on the practice green, and a couple of rounds on the course, comparing a steel-shafted QB10 with the Stability Tour shafted QB5. These are my initial take-homes.

It Feels Stiffer

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

Kind of the point, I know, but I was surprised at just how much stiffer the Stability Tour shaft felt. Comparatively, the steel shaft feels like it wanders all over the place. Again, purely subjective, with no supporting CPM measurement. I would just say that side by side, the steel shaft delivered more wiggle.

Side note on this, I went and rolled balls before  reading the Stability Tour claims. It was validating to see that what I was experiencing was what they were promoting.

I did notice that I struggled at a distance more with the Stability Shaft when compared to steel, with my putts typically coming up short. On a positive note, although they were short, the grouping of the putts was noticeably better than steel.

I know, 95% of the putts you leave short never go in, but as with most anything that changes how the ball comes off the putter, as I hit more putts, distance control improved. If I can keep the tight grouping, and figure out the touch from a distance, putts should start falling in the cup.

In close, putts were dropping with shocking regularity. From about 5-7’ putts were closer automatic. I’d hit one and think it would miss, and it wouldn’t. This was not the case with the previously steel shafted version of the QB5 putter, with struggles in close being one of the reasons it got relegated to the garage last summer in favor of the QB10.

As I said, I don’t have percentages or any numbers to back up these claims. All I have are my honest impressions, and I will say that the Stability Tour shaft impressed me.

Should you Spend the $250

I suppose the answer to that question depends upon the current state of your putting.

If putting is the strength of your game, stop looking at anything that has to do with new putting gear, not even headcovers. Seriously, if it’s working, no tinkering allowed.

If your putting is circling the drain, though, fixing it for $250 is a bargain. Lots of the stock putters that you’ll find in your local golf shop will cost you at least that, and in some cases, a whole lot more. Let’s face it, chasing putters doesn’t always work, and it can be an expensive pursuit.

Since the above testing data is a bit nebulous and subjective, it’s tough to give this a hard yes or no. What are my leanings based upon rolling lots of balls with lots of putters? I’m leaning toward believing what the Stability Tour shaft is selling.

Before you spend another $400 on another random putter from your shop, you should consider the Stability Tour as another option. It’ll enhance the looks of your current putter, and maybe your putting will improve as well.

Availability and Pricing

The BGT Stability Tour Shaft is available now through the company website and authorized resellers. Retail price is $250.

You can use any modern technology you wish but you will measure ZERO difference in shaft twist or flex when putting from within say 25’. You rolling a very light round object at like 2 to 5 mph, it’s basic physics that there enough force & weight involved to see any differences! PERIOD ! Now, if you have say a 55ft uphill putt and you strike the ball off the toe technology might be able to record a very minute difference, but even that would barely affect where the ball ends up!

I think some of you are missing what this is exactly supposed to do and who it is really supposed to help. This shaft will help the average golfer more than a tour player. Why? Because, like high MOI clubheads, it’s designed to reduce the amount of twisting on off center hits.

This is why a lot of pros play blades in their irons while most average golfers play more forgiving irons with help from weighting. If you hit the center of your clubhead or putter head dead center everytime then there won’t be twisting, every MM off center however adds up to the ball going offline. For every MM off center hit, the ball will go X amount of CM’s offline. the longer the putt, the bigger the miss.

This reduces the miss on off center hits just like a high MOI iron, driver head or putter head.

It should be fairly easy to measure the amount of twisting of the putter head that actually occurs when putting with a conventional steel putter shaft vs a “stabilized” shaft, and then judge how much head twist contributes to missed putts and whether stabilization is worthwhile.

Scott Morton

I replaced the shaft in my Bettinardi 358g with the Tour Stability shaft, what a difference.. Confidence is a big part of Putting, and feel is the biggest help gain for confidence. I have always been a decent putter, now a very good putter.. Looks, feel and confidence makes you a great putter. If you can afford a 500.00 driver and 1500.00 set of irons, why would you not improve your scoring club?

Just installed one of the Stability Tour shafts in my Odyssey O-works black Versa 7 tonight. Also put a new grip on, the Super Stroke Traxion Tour 3.0. Looks awesome. Eager to try it out tomorrow.

I bought several counter core weights to go with everything. It was very surprising to discover that when I weighed the putter before installing the new shaft that the swing weight was an E 8. After putting in the 75 gram counter core weight the swing weight is down to D 9 ish.

My golfing buddies have been trying to talk me out of changing shafts because I’ve been putting extremely well lately.

Hope it makes it even better otherwise I’ll be taking some crap from them. Motivates me to put the time in to dial it in and practice enough that I will see results.

Well that is just what I did. First I went in and Blair watched me hit a few puts. My stroke was so bad he said I am sorry we will not be shafting the putter today. Instead he gave me a putting lesson and told me to go work on the things he told me for a couple weeks. If I was committed and did it then I could come back for the shaft. If not the shaft alone wouldnt fix my problems. I respected that and appreciated it. He didnt just say wow this guy sucks let me sell him a shaft. I worked on his drills and took 3 putts off my score the following 6 rounds each. I went back and got the shaft and now I average 6-8 less putts than before. I feel more confident and make more 5-7 foot putts. I know anything longer I will make an easy two putt but i have started hitting some of those bc as he told me this shaft will make the ball roll be more consistent and therefore u can predict easier where to aim and it will go where u want. No miss hits anymore. Best money I spent on the most important part of my game. I have already dropped my handicap from 5.9 to 5.3 so far and getting better.

Have this tour shaft set up along with the Evnroll Gravity Grip and noticed a significant difference in feel. Scotty Futura, custom . Was able to test side by side for some time now against another Scotty I own. The shaft itself is noticeably better in feel and I love the look.. I question how much the new Gravity Grip plays a role here as well. I absolutely love the grip. I think the combo between shaft and grip make a huge difference in my putts. I tended to pull my putts. Now clearly more straight. Will be practicing a lot more putting especially now during off season here. The look and feel for me I have noticed significant change for the better. Putting is so personal though. I play wth people who have the oldest beat up putters money can buy. You look at them and its a joke. They still sink em! All I can say is try this out and without a doubt also demo the gravity grip because I’m convinced that is playing a tremendous role here now.

Well said Dave. I can see myself reshafting my Scotty at some point.

With fitting for clubs becoming more prevalent, I get that this is something that will become part of choosing a putter. Most of us are beginning to have access to club fittings (only way I buy clubs) but I have not seen a lot of places that offer putter fittings. While I don’t question that putter shafts will also be an area of growth, I question the average golfer reading this, buying the shaft and having it installed on their current putter. I have ot imagine that putter head types, weights and other factors should matter. However, I do look forward to the day when more data is available on this and other putter products, as well as better fitting options.

I’ll take the company’s claim of more stability and less twisting at face value. The question for me is will I make more putts with it, and I’m not going to spend $250 to find out. I’ll wait for more player comments to come in and hopefully get to try someone else’s. As far as making putts, starting the ball on line and rolling it at the correct speed are still the keys. Way more so than stability and less twisting. And don’t forget reading greens. When I miss a putt I can usually attribute it to one of these factors, not my putter shaft not being stable enough.

Amazing to me how many of you will pay green fees, club memberships dues etc. and then cheap out on a $250 putter shaft. if the placebo affect ends up working for you, isn’t that money well spent? I put the the tour in my Scotty and love the look, the weight and the feel, as a result of that, I’m putting much better, more stress free pars. money well spent I would say.

I was completely skeptical until I tried it in a customer’s putter and I’ve seen stuff like this before like UST Frequency Filtered which did nothing for me. Seriously if you’re just discounting this without even trying it because you can’t afford the price tag, you’re an idiot.

Without a doubt, I’m definitely converting more putts from inside 20′ than without it.

Do they have any recommendations on weight of a putter grip when paired with a heavier shaft? Because the shaft is heavier should you be using a lighter grip or is it just personal preference?

Good question and I think its personal pref. I added some more weight to my Scotty. Plugged in 25 grams now in mine and along with the new Gravity Grip I noticed a significant difference in putts made. I’m no longer pulling my putts which I had a problem with all season but no more. I honestly can’t tell if its because of the new shaft or grip but I think its the combo of both.

These kinds of very stiff and heavy carbon shafts has been a thing in Japan for years in high-end putters. Old news

Gary Nisbett

The problem is and always has been the golfer NOT the putter. Practice, persistence and any putter that feels good to you.

I have the luxury of living in Fort Worth so I have gone to the BGT studio and got fitted on quintic by their head of R&D Blair both times I got these shafts. my old putter has the original and my new spider has the tour shaft. It’s unfortunate that so many are calling this a gimmick and criticizing. please respond to me if you have actually played this shaft and feel this way. first of all how many of you have been fitted for your putter, let alone considered the shaft? But most golfers go buy a $500 driver off the shelf and don’t bat an eye. a great putting round is what 30-34 putts? now quick name another club you use 30 times in a round…go ahead I’ll wait. see my point? I’m not claiming this is a magic shaft where you put it in and you hole everything. obviously you have to practice and put in the work. I’ve had the shaft for a while so it feels “normal” to me but when I grab a buddies putter it feels very flimsy. like how a senior flex driver shaft feels if you play extra stiff. last I checked feel effects timing? and timing effects performance? so what if you spend the $250 and instead of burning the edge you make one extra putt a round? I play about 80 rounds a year, you do the math.

Most golfers don’t drop $500 on a driver. But we don’t spend enough time or money finding the #1 scoring club. I don’t care what the new data suggests. You putt for dough.

A $250 putter shaft is going to be a hard sell. The bending forces transmitted from the putter head to the shaft during the swing must be a small fraction of the forces that are applied to the shafts in all our other clubs. If the main advantage of the shaft is assumed to be increased stiffness, surely that could be obtained for much less cost.

Perhaps the Stability Tour shaft is beneficial. But I wonder about the placebo effect. And the role that bias plays in our analytical mental processes., no matter how hard we try to be objective.

There is also an effect called choice-supportive bias or post-purchase rationalization: “The tendency to retroactively ascribe positive attributes to an option one has selected and/or to demote the forgone options.” In other words, once we make a decision or buy something, we really hate to admit , even subconsciously, that it wasn’t a wise move.

Allow me to move it easily from one putter head to another and I’ll consider it. Every putter manufacturer will need to have a standardized adjustable hosel.

you can do that

Well just like any forum. those that have really experienced the new Technology see and know why it exists. The disbelievers have aren’t going to work with it and they can’t imagine what it does and will just be in denial. This was the case when graphite first came on the scene. It was the case when drivers were made of Titanium and made larger which was brutally criticized at the time. Then adjustability in woods were just “hype” and marketing and on and on and on. In a month or two more new tech and more nonbeliever critics who will never even look at it. The pros, the scratch and better players will always look. Those who shoot high numbers may not care and that’s fine if they don’t. Those who can’t responsibly afford to try new tech shouldn’t. But these people should just stay silent. I didn’t have to pay for my Stability shaft, but after using it with great success, I would buy one in a minute even if I would have to save up to do so.

Hahahaha… well said Sir.

Francis Sullivan

I bought a stroke lab Tuttle and the whole putter only cost 250

That’s cool. It’s also not the same thing.

Nick Aquilino

Technology does help. As I see it an EVNROLL putter head that corrects miss hits, a STABILITY shaft that helps keep the face square and a GRAVITY GRIP that provides a higher MOI at the upper end of the putter has to be the best of all worlds.

Really? Is that why the “no tech” Tommy Armour finished in the top 2, two years in a row in the My Golf Spy most wanted testing?

the test was for putter heads and not shafts.

Wrong, Willie. The test was for complete putters not just the heads. The “low tech” putter from Tommy Armour won twice. Tech in putters is over-hyped.

Nick, I had the same thought. Unfortunately a putter like that would cost over $600

willie moss-walden

Steve that’s an extremely definitive statement. what putter do you use? unless you stole it from your local putt putt I’m guessing there’s some tech in there. and who decided Tommy armour was low tech? there’s a big difference between cheap and inexpensive.

After studying golf and it’s relationship to “technology” for the past 5 or so years, I’m convinced that very little that has been released in the last 10 years will improve golf appreciably for anyone over a 10 or so handicap.. None of the people I play with at 10 or above have a consistent enough swing, impact position, rhythm, or ball/club impact spot for most of this tech to help. I do believe that folks who are below a 10 might see some improvement.

P. T. Barnum had a quote for this. Look it up. ?

have you ever used one?

Ken Bartley

Would be one heck of an upgrade to my Wilson $ 19.95 at Walmart putter! Been in my bag for over 20 years and I putt just fine with it.

I currently have this tour stability shaft on a black 2012 Scotty Newport 2. The all-black tour stability shaft into a black putter head looks great. I’ve just ordered a Bettinardi INOVAI 6.0 Crescent Neck putter that comes out January 2020 and Bettinardi is saying they’ve stiffened the shaft on their new release putters. Have you tested these Bettinardi shafts to see how they compare to this $250 tour stability shaft and the Odyssey stroke lab shaft.? That would be interesting to see if they are on the same track as Odyssey and if it is the same as stability shaft without spending the extra $250. Thanks for the review.

Regular price $400.0

Chuck Austin

$ 250..00 For a putter shaft , Please . Your be surprised the best putter , didn’t even think about the shaft when they made all there putts. Stability come on folks., How fast are you swinging this putter . LOL I would bet you could putt just as good with with a flexible shaft . It is not the shaft , it is what your looking at the end of the stick. Work on your putting , most people don’t work enough on putting. Work on your swing and believe your going to make the putt every time.. Don’t buy the hype .

have you ever tried one? ever got fitted and compared the results to your own shaft on quintic? I have…twice. can’t argue with the results. people will drop this on a driver shaft with no problem but with the one club you use on every hole for some reason this seems ridiculous?

I am using the original Stability shaft and have for 5 months. I love it . I have let others try it and everyone seems to want one after using it. For many $$$ are a concern. There is clearly less “play” in the head than with a standard shaft. While I do not use a heavier head that has taken over the market place when compared to past decades, I would definitely recommend it for today’s putters of more weight and large grips. Absolutely more stable. Shafts in putters make a difference. The stiffer more stable shaft is much more consistent. If I was using a heavier head I would look to the Tour version. Most people people don’t realize that over time putters do get re-shafted. Ben Crenshaw re-shafted his little Ben blade several times over the years due to too much flexibility over time. Now $250? Well that depends on where and how you play. Making a couple more putts a round can be well worth it if you play for something. For those striving to shoot a monumental score such as breaking 90 or 80 or 70 might be worth that or more. Two weeks after getting mine I shot my age for the first time. That 5 under round was my best in two years!.

I don’t know. about this. You can make a really stiff shaft for a LOT less than $250. I think Faxon used to use a more stout steel shaft in his putter and I doubt it costs $250 unless it was machined from GSS.

I think this is just marketing people looking for another product that they can go high end with. With golf the last decade you can find all sorts of products that now have high end versions. I never thought a pair of shoes could cost more than $100, but that’s nothing now. I’ve seen rain suits for about $1000.!

If I’m falling for this then that shaft needs a $300 grip on it. I mean the grip is really important and we have all these fancy shapes, but they only cost $20-$30 for the most part. Where is my extra special putter grip that will be custom molded to my hands……also if it could be heated that would be great because my hands are always cold.

GSS is really soft. Terrible idea.

It’s denser than graphite.

At $250, it better have my breakfast waiting for me when I get up. I think this is just another gimic to get people to chase the illusion that they can buy the game. I would love to see some numbers using 2 identical putter heads and a stock shaft versus the $250. Shaft. Then you may have an answer, otherwise, if you can read a putt you could probably use a 2×4 and get decent results. Sorry for rambling. Just my humble opinion.

I compared exactly what you said live at their studio in Dallas. it’s not hype and marketing.

Way too expensive. . If they guaranteed me 5 strokes off my score that might be a different story. I’ll just work on putting. I have a Scotty that cost 400.00 not about to drop an extra 250.00.

Johnny Cowboy

It’s funny that you call a $250 shaft way too expensive but yet you bought a $400 putter.

gary simpson

. If it really worked then every person on this planet that makes a living playing golf would use it.

Christopher

The battle is getting the shafts into tour players’ hands, sure, some will pick one up on the practice green and roll a few, but with events nearly every week it would take a committed off-season to get used to the results. For most it’s better the devil you know.

Next time you watch a PGA event, take note of how many pros are using this now.

Like said before HOG PUTTERS had same idea

Nothing like the Hog putter

There is NO WAY I would buy a putter that promises to reduce strokes significantly, especially if it costs $250. I just wonder how many of those strokes could be reduced with 20 minutes of practice per day. BTW, that putter looks very similar to an old Ping putter I bought back in the 70s., and the difference in shaft set aside, I’m betting I could putt about as well with that old Ping. BTW, I average right at 30 putts per round with my old Odyssey.

Total BS ! Ask Corey Pavin, now on the senior tour, who has used the same putter since high School. Brandon the mad scientist might get a kick out of this but to anyone one in their right mind it would only mean at $250 they would be getting the shaft (excuse the pun couldn’t resist)

Has Pavin said how many times he’s re-shafted it? I guarantee the answer isn’t zero. Still, this shaft seems a bit of madness. You can slam an X7 or Project X 7.0 into your putter for a lot less.

Scott Giles

Fellas, I play 4+ times a week. I struggle to find a scenario where this would payoff. I make 3-4 skins a week now (3-5$ per). Even if I earned 1 more per week (directly attributable to the putter shaft) it would take 100+ weeks. If you want to play a $250 putter shaft be my guest but don’t expect it to pay for itself.

Wat too expensive! I am totally satisfied with my 1 and 2 putts with the very occasional 3 putt. Some people just don’t have the feel or the confidence on the green and that’s why their putts are high, not the putter. Just my humble opinion.

I have this installed in the Spider X and I am sinking putts like crazy. The feel is amazing and seems super stable. Value especially in golf is extremly subjective. I also have been rolling a lot of practice putts and doing drills. I have been able to control speed and get it started on line with this set up. Could it be the practice, confidence with putter, or just plain luck I am not sure. I do know I like the sound of the ball hitting the bottom of the cup.

I have installed 18 stability shafts and had no returns. This shaft really stabilized the head of the putter. I myself have always struggled with my putting. I installed the shaft in my long putter and really has help my putting especially on the 6and 8 foot putts. So check it out you won’t be disappointed..GM

Doug zecher

Would like to see this tested against the UST Mamiya frequency filtered shaft. ($30). Don’t think you can come close to justifying the price of this Stability shaft

More and more gimmicks. Well if it works for you. Then it’s your decision. $250 You might want to try a steel pipe first

How can you say it is a gimmick if you have never tried it. It works great and really helps with distance control on long putts

Scott, does it help with reading the breaks in the slopes of the greens, speed of the greens, bald spots, spike marks? If not what’s the advantage? Seems to me the test to good putting is how close you can get your approach shots to the hole.

ELL does a $500 driver help with alignment and grip? does it help you not swing over the top? yet for some reason when people buy a non fit driver off the shelf it’s all good but if you spend $250 on the shaft of the only club you use on every hole it’s a gimmick…I’m confused.

Anyone remember the TT shaft in the Hog putter? I think machine golf owns them now. Same concept?

$250???? Does this putter shaft still break over your knee like the others? I’m happy with my 1 putts…. just not the 2 or 3 that follow…

⛳  Verdict: BGT makes one cool looking putter shaft that will improve your putting.

I’m the guy at Independent Golf Reviews that talks about shafts on woods, irons and wedges.  Most golfers I fit will go out of their way to tell me that the shaft is the most important part of the club. They want to make sure they have the right shaft in every club. Yet, when I fit a putter, not one person asks me if the putter shaft is correct for them. A putter swing has the same elements as any other club such as Club Path, Face Angle, Attack Angle and Hit Location, which results in Ball Speed, Launch Angle, Spin Rate and Direction. It was only a matter of time before a putter shaft caught up with technology like the shafts in other clubs.  Breakthrough Golf Technology and the Stability Tour Black putter shaft is that shaft. I tested the Stability Tour Black putter shaft in a Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum Laguna 2.5 which has been my gamer for over 15 years. It hit all the marks on what I normally judge equipment by and changed my thoughts on buying another putter without a BGT shaft.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

The goal of the BGT Stability Putter Shaft is to improve putter specific motion and performance. The work of Barney Adams, a true pioneer in the game of golf, means technology in shafts has finally made its way to the putter. Simply put “ The putter shaft has not changed for over 50 years; it’s a simple steel pipe. Over the years head designs for putters have evolved and gotten dramatically heavier. This has resulted in shafts that are not stable or strong enough to keep these heavier, advanced putter heads from oscillating, twisting and turning. In fact, the strongest part of the putter shaft is under the hands, where it does the least good; the weakest part is near the club head.”

I heard an engineer from one of the top club manufacturers once say, “Technology is about materials and application.” From that point on, I’ve tried to break down equipment with that thought in mind. As Breakthrough Golf Technology says, “ Stability limits unwanted movement by stiffening the shaft by 25% without abolishing feel and reducing torque by almost 50%, to deliver the club face squarer at impact .”

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

The technology in a Stability Tour Black shaft helps to improve aspects of the putting stroke we normally wouldn’t think of. The new Stability Tour Putter shaft has added 30% more high modulus carbon fiber to help increase stiffness from their original shaft and balances like steel to allow for exact swing weight matching. It has a 13% reduction in the shaft diameter, making the Stability Tour shaft have a more streamlined transition from the graphite section to the steel tip. I really like the black-out appearance which blends well with nearly any putter head and has a smooth gloss, but not shiny coating. The contrast of black and silver with my putter set up has people asking me about what I am putting with.

Breakthrough Golf Stability Tour Putter Shaft Review

50 Words or Less

The Breakthrough Golf Stability Tour putter shaft is a slimmer, lighter version of the original Stability shaft.  Higher balance point makes it feel more like traditional steel shafts.

Check out the latest from Breakthrough, the Stability One Tour HERE

Introduction

Last year, Barney Adams, the man behind Adams Golf, brought Breakthrough Golf Technology’s first product, the Stability Putter Shaft (review HERE ), to market.  Using a combination of steel and graphite, it claimed to deliver superior results on the green.  BGT’s newest release is the Stability Tour, a shaft that pairs the performance of the Stability shaft with a more traditional look and feel.

Listen to the Barney Adams discuss Breakthrough Golf on the Plugged In Golf Podcast HERE .

Check out the latest Stability shaft, the Stability Carbon, HERE

BGT enters the driver market with the Brava.  Full review HERE .

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

Part of the reason for creating the Stability Tour shaft was to make it look more like a traditional putter shaft.  The new Stability Tour has a 13% reduction in diameter compared to the original, a difference which is very noticeable (see photo above).  In addition to the reduced diameter, the Stability Tour uses a black sleeve/adapter, which is less noticeable than the silver one on the original Stability shaft.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

In the photo above, you can see the Stability Tour next to a black steel shaft.  While you can certainly see the difference, I found that when I was putting I didn’t notice it at all.

The feel of the Stability Tour has changed substantially from the original.  First, the weight has been reduced from 125 grams to 110 grams .  Additionally, the balance point was moved toward the grip to bring it more in line with traditional steel shafts.  Both of these changes worked exactly as planned: the Stability Tour feels identical to a traditional steel shaft.

To soften the feel of impact , Breakthrough Golf put 30% more carbon into the Stability Tour shaft .  As I said about the original Stability shaft, I don’t find that it softens the feel as much as it cleans it up.  Pure strikes feel almost identical with steel vs. the Stability Tour, but mishits don’t have as much “noise” with the Stability Tour.

Performance

The claims that Breakthrough Golf makes about the Stability Tour putter shaft seem bold but are very mild by golf industry standards.  They state that the Stability Tour has an 82% decrease in [club face] deviation from square compared to steel and that the Stability Tour delivers a more consistent smash factor across the face .  This translates to putts that have more consistent distance and more accurate start lines.

While those claims are eyebrow-raising, in talking with Barney Adams (listen HERE ) he is very clear that the Stability shaft isn’t going to magically transform anyone’s putting .  The Stability Tour should help golfers improve their distance control and reduce three-putts, but it won’t make every 20 footer find the bottom of the cup.

Based on my initial results and my experience with the original Stability Shaft, I’m excited to have the Stability Tour in my bag next season .  I prefer the more traditional weighting of the Stability Tour and the slimmer look.  While it may be a bit of the honeymoon effect, I was seeing more mid-range putts end up in or next to the cup compared to my steel shafted putter with the same head.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

When products are redesigned with feedback from Tour, they don’t necessarily get better for the average golfer.  In the case of the Breakthrough Golf Stability Tour shaft, the upgrades that the Tour players want will be enjoyed by amateurs as well.  With a slimmer look and more traditional weighting, the new Stability Tour makes for a seamless transition away from steel.  If you’d like to demo a Stability shaft for yourself, head to your nearest Club Champion .

BGT’s Stability putter shaft: Real numbers, real improvement

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

What do you get when you take a collection of experienced, hard-working, talented, golf industry minds, and bring them together with an idea to revolutionize a part of the game that has been overlooked for far too long? You get Breakthrough Golf Technology (BGT) and the Stability putter shaft.

Let me be up front: As a professional club builder, and a guy with a putter I was fit for and love, the idea of changing an integral part of that club was something I was unsure about. But it was obvious five minutes into meeting Blair Philip (my fitter and VP of R&D) and the rest of the BGT Team, I could trust them with building anything, especially my putter.

What BGT has come up within the Stability Shaft is a product that delivers results for golfers of all skill levels looking to improve both feel and consistency with the one club they use on every hole–the Putter. And who doesn’t want to be a more consistent putter? They achieve this with the Stability through a multi-material design that has lower torque, deflection, and stiffer flex than any putter shaft on the market. What is also very smart about the design is that thanks to some clever engineering, it can easily be retrofitted to your existing putter by an experienced club builder, or you can have it sent right to the BGT HQ to get retrofitted.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

How the Stability Shaft works

The shaft is made up of four parts

  • The bottom steel shaft portion that connects to the putter head: It’s either a completely new shaft OR, it is the small amount of shaft remaining above the head from the existing shaft that was already in the putter. This is how BGT retrofits putters with double bends by cutting above the bend and then attaching the Stability Shaft to the tip of the existing club with the adapter. For 99% of putters without a double bend – the whole shaft is assembled from scratch.
  • The aluminum connector: This piece at the bottom of the graphite section allows for the universal fitting of almost any putter imaginable and is five times stiffer than steel. YES, five times! When talking to the builders at BGT, they haven’t met a putter they couldn’t install the shaft into.
  • The shaft itself: A graphite shaft built to parallel .600″ all the way down (same diameter as the butt section of a standard shaft), which also means it won’t distort your favorite grip. Compiled of eight layers, strategically wrapped to exacting specs for straightness and stiffness. The builders and R&D team at BGT check EVERY SINGLE shaft for straightness once it arrives from their manufacturing facility (see below tool).

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

  • The aluminum shaft insert: Developed through finite element analysis the insert is only 22g and is positioned to both reinforce the graphite at the exact spot of maximum potential deflection and further reduce any vibration to optimize feel.

All of these parts working together create the Stability Shaft.

Stability Shaft fitting and numbers

For all its testing and fitting BGT utilizes  Quintic Ball Roll  – the “Trackman of Putting.” With a high-speed camera shooting at 720 frames-per-second, it allows for a multitude of parameters including: face angle, face rotation, twist at impact, ball speed, club head speed, angle of attack, shaft lean, lie angle, low point, ball roll, spin, spin axis (side spin), skid and more. Below is a representation of my initial testing with my Ping ZB vs. the same putter built to the same specs with the Stability

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

Pre & Post Stability Number Comparisons

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

So what does it all really mean?

To quote my fitter Blair after initial testing, “those are some really good numbers there!” Now, to be fair, like I said before, this is a putter I was fit for (NOT using Quintic) BUT I have used the system extensively in the past and have conducted fittings for others using the system. Just like with a driver, it’s possible to optimize your putter for less skid and more/faster forward roll, with the right club and proper technique. Looking at the numbers, there are few things that stand out including an improvement on all key performance factors.

Ball Speed Range (distance control) dropped. Being able to control distance is an important factor in making more putts. The numbers don’t, at first glance, appear to be enormous, but if you think about the time spent trying to “max” out a driver getting more consistent results, when you break down the actual numbers is a just below 18 percent.  On a putt over 15 feet, that could mean catching an edge or missing high or low on the break. If there is one thing I struggle with during a round of golf, it’s distance control and having the numbers to prove that the Stability helps with that was a big confidence boost.

My ability to return the putter to square. The reason the data appears to show the opposite is because, like many, I have an aim bias (I knew I had it before the fitting), and Blair quickly identified during the fitting process. From Blair: “The steel putter face angle was closer to “square” but if you add the concept that we identified about a one-inch right aim bias the Stability Shaft actually returned the face closer to the line at the point of impact.” Armed with the knowledge of my aim bias, and equipped with the new tools, setting up on line becomes easier, and as a result, will help improve my mid-length putts – that valuable 15-foot range. One extra made putt per round adds up quickly.

Impact Ratio. This is the smash factor of putting and it was another piece of the puzzle that was improved during the fitting: 20 percent to be exact (from a 0.50  range to a 0.40 range). As the impact ratio shrinks, range shrinks, then putts and distance control from all distances continue to get more consistent. These percentages are a big jump from changing one component of a golf club, and as I will get to, these percentage improvements are starting to add up.

Zero Skid Length.  This metric is just like what it sounds like. The length at which zero skid occurs and the ball starts to roll forward. With steel, I reached zero skid at an average of 20.5,” and with the Stability, the average was 19.17″ AND the range went from 8′ to 5′. Again, another drastic improvement in the statistical advantage.

These are all significant improvements with a putter that I was already putting well with. What’s even more interesting is that when BGT was testing higher / mid handicap players the numbers improve at an even fast rate. The below data demonstrates the improvement in the ability to return the face to square before after having the Stability installed.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

So how do BGT and the Stability Shaft help you become a better putter?

Let’s forget putting for a moment (bet you didn’t expect that statement, right?) and let’s talk about performance improvements and what we can do when presented with data and a problem. It’s called the “The Aggregation of Marginal Gains” and it was pioneered by Sir David Brailsford the British cycling coach, MBA, and holder or a degree in Sports Science & Phycology. The theory states “The idea that if you broke down everything you could think of that goes into riding a bike and then improved it by 1 percent, you will get a significant increase when you put them all together” (great interview here from the Harvard Business Review) .

Under David’s coaching, starting in 2002 the British Cycling team — a country with only a single gold medal to speak of in over 75 years of competition, won seven out of an available 10 gold medals in track cycling during the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Four years later they matched this success again at the London Olympics! Many other coaches in varying sports have adopted this philosophy with proven success.

BOOM, There you have it! The entire ethos of what the Stability Shaft can do for you and your putting. It’s not about 10 putts on a practice green, and it’s not about the first round you put it into play — it’s about the long-term effects of getting more consistent and measurable results over and over. Just a small sample size of data provided by Quintic proved this for me and extrapolated over the course of a year’s worth of golf is going to add up to some very interesting results, which I am excited to follow up on as the season progresses.

As a golfer focused on performance, and someone that puts a premium on using the right equipment, I never put a new piece of gear into my bag unless I know without a doubt it’s going to be better. Whether it be trying a new grip to changing the hosel setting on a fairway wood, I need to see proof of better. After going through my fitting with Blair at BGT headquarters, having my putter re-shafted and retesting on the Quintic system the Stability PROVES it’s better for me, and I believe that it can prove to be better for you.

Ryan, All you needed to do was to switch to a high-moi mallet type putter instead of the low-moi blade you’re using and could have spent the same money on a new putter

I have always wondered why there hasent been a putter shaft company!! I always thought to myself that a stiffer shaft would result in straighter more consistent putts!!

More Snake oil, if you really have a problem with a STEAL shaft at most distances you use your putter, then just get a few putting lessons. This is just MORE overkill and marketing. Don’t waste your money!

Mar 10, 2019 at 1:20 pm

Bill, I couldn’t disagree with you more. I have the shaft installed and it is terrific. It’s not snake oil. For you just blindly say that it’s snake oil without ever trying it makes little sense. Also, will you please explain to me the difference between the Stability Shaft, a Steel Shaft, and a “Steal” Shaft? It sounds like you’re someone who uses a “Steal” shaft by the looks of your post. Looks like rather than suggesting people should take a putting lesson, you yourself may want to think about taking a spelling and grammatical lesson. Respectfully speaking of course.

I’m not sure how this works (ie, why does alignment become easier) and weight specs (of the new shaft and your putter head & previous shaft, feel and impact on your stroke stroke are missing. I have two identical putters whose heads weigh 450g and 350g; is one head weight more likely to benefit than the other? I can’t send my putters off and cross my fingers.

Why waste your money on lessons? There are plenty of videos out there and you can use all the tools in your house without spending any money, just do what the videos tell you and spend 4 hours practicing every week instead of giving those hours to a Pro

“ how this shaft works “. … I will simplify it for everyone. You open your wallet, pull out your credit card, and one week later you make a putt that you may, or may not have made with any other putter. You exclaim to your golf buddies, “so worth it! “. The following month you look at your credit card statement and think “why did I spend $199 on a putter shaft ?”

Mar 8, 2019 at 9:33 pm

With all due respect Mr. Barath, seems you used your marketing experience to the max in this article. Your tried to validate this with numbers which are not explained nor can be read (I have a 27″ monitor) One interesting item was not included in this infomercial, THE PRICE $199 for a PUTTER shaft?

  • MiloMalt: “No complaints and so far only high praise for my Qi10 Tour 3 and 5 wood. I’m getting great numbers and a nice penetrating ball flight with great height whereas with my old TSi2 4 wood it was spinny and ballooning and short because of that.”

We spotted them on the PGA Tour at the Arnold Palmer Invitational; now they’re heading to retail. Bettinardi Golf today announced its first generation irons: Bettinardi CB24 and MB24 irons.

We’ve seen the veteran putter maker dabble in wedges in the past, but this is the first time Bob Bettinardi and company have set their sites on the widest portion of the golf bag.

“Since I founded the company, the focus has been on crafting the finest equipment in the golf industry for professionals and amateurs alike, and our putters have embodied that belief for 25 years,” said Bob Bettinardi, Founder and CEO of Bettinardi Golf. “I’ve always dreamed of expanding beyond the short game, and now that dream has become a reality. You can feel the decades of expertise and the years of research that went into each head, and we can’t wait to finally bring them to market.”

2024 Bettinardi irons: Key technology

One-piece co-forged solid body: Bettinardi co-forges the 1025 carbon steel chassis with the interior iron components in a bid to deliver superb feel and feedback.

Tri-material construction: Military-grade CMC (ceramic matrix composite) plus high-density tungsten plus forged carbon steel. Bettinardi has balanced these elements to deliver forgiveness in a forged iron and achieve desired weight profiles as well as consistency between irons.

Progressive CG: Bettinardi tweaks the positioning of tungsten and CMC elements in each iron. Accordingly, longer irons (lower CG) are easier to launch, and shorter irons (higher CG) deliver a more penetrating flight with controlled spin.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

Bettinardi irons: Additional model details

Bettinardi MB24 irons: Bettinardi’s tour blade features a thin topline and muscleback design. Weighting and feel were the focus in these experts’ tools. The company incorporated its signature honeycomb milling on the rear of the club (and does the same in the cavity of the CB24).

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

Bettinardi CB24 irons: Bettinardi sought to unite classic design with modern engineering in its CB24 irons. Forged feel meets a progressive cavity with perimeter weighting. Easier launching and more forgiving than their MB24 brethren.

Pricing, specs, availability

  • Price: $1,600/set
  • Pre-order: March 26
  • At dealers/Studio B: April 5 (internationally late April)

CB24 irons will be available in left-handed models as well, which will ship in late June. Bettinardi will offer a range of shaft and grip options.

Shaft Stiffness Profile Comparison

Steel shafts are not strong enough to balance out today’s heavier putter heads.  Stability Tour is 97% stiffer than a steel shaft, especially in the Stabilised Zone of the putter.  This area is the critical part of the shaft that controls the flexing and twisting forces.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!

The Moscow free walking tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum . You can’t miss this massive red building. The museum’s interior is almost as spectacular as the artifacts you can see within. Read my post dedicated to the museum here to find out more on what you can see and tips for visiting. Admission is free with the Moscow City Pass .

The Kremlin

The Moscow Kremlin

Behind the walls of the Kremlin lie the working offices of Russian’s government and president. When visiting the Kremlin you can see the Armory Chamber, Cathedral Square, the Patriach’s Palace and many more cathedrals. You definitely want to buy tickets ahead of time so you avoid the long-lines. You can get free admission with the Moscow City Pass . It’s also worth it to take a guided tour if you don’t speak Russian so you have more of an understanding of what you are seeing.

St. Basil’s Cathedral

Moscow's St. Basil's Cathedral

If asked to conquer up an image of Moscow, St. Basil’s Cathedral might just be the most likely image you picture. The cathedral has a museum that you can visit at a later time. You can buy tickets at the ticket kiosk outside the cathedral or receive free admission with the Moscow City Pass .

Moskva River

Moskva River

Next up on the tour is the Moskva River which runs through the center of Moscow. A cruise on the Moskva River is a great way to see the city from a different perspective.

GUM Shopping Mall

Who would think a mall would be one of Moscow’s most well-known attractions? GUM shopping mall across from the Kremlin makes up one of the four sides of the Red Square. The stores might be a bit too pricey for shopping, but the gorgeous interior is worth a visit. If that doesn’t convince you, the mall has some of the best ice cream! GUM is the only building you go inside during the free walking tour. There are pay bathrooms you can use while you have a few minutes of free time.

Kazan Cathedral

Moscow Kazan Cathedral

Located on the northeast corner of the Red Square, the Kazan Cathedral is another impressive dome-shaped building in Moscow that is also an active place of worship. Entering the cathedral is allowed, but remember to be respectful if people are worshipping.

Bolshoi Theater

Moscow Bolshoi Theater

Contrary to the previous buildings, the Bolshoi Theater isn’t along one of the four sides of the Red Square. Located a few minutes away, the theater is one of the best theaters in the world. Make sure to come back for a guided tour of the inside or make reservations far ahead of time to attend a ballet or opera.

Alexander Gardens

Moscow Alexander Gardens

The tour ends near the Alexander Gardens , a free public park located along the western Kremlin walls. The garden’s green lawns, sculptures and water fountains offer a nice place to take a stroll or relax a bit after some busy sightseeing.

Moscow Red Square

You can visit all these sites on your own, but the best part of doing the Moscow free tour is that you learn more information and have the potential to meet new people!

During my tour I started to talk to a woman from Malaysia and she invited me to join her and her friends for a Russian meal afterwards. It’s these little impromptu meetings and opportunities that I love most about traveling and add more to the sightseeing experience. While I was a little hesitant about going to the tour myself I told myself it would be a great opportunity to possibly meet new people. I love when things work out like that!

If you have already seen the iconic sights of the Red Square and are looking for other things to do in Moscow check out my What to Do in Moscow post that gives more off-the beaten track things to do in Moscow!

Moscow Free Walking Tour Visiting Information

Moscow Free Walking Tours

How to Get There

The Moscow Free Walking Tour begins at the Marshal Zhukov monument in front of the State Historical Museum (a large red building). The website shows a map with the exact meeting point.

To get to the red square area you can take the blue 3 metro line to the Ploshchad Revolyutsii stop, or the green 2 line to the Teatralnaya station or the red 1 line to the Okhotny Ryad station. For more on how to use the metro read my Moscow Metro Guide .

Tours every day at 10:30am – 1pm in English

If you need a toilet before the start of the tour the Okhotny Ryad and GUM shopping malls are both close to the start of the tour. You will need to pay to use the toilets. There is a quick break mid-way through the tour at the GUM shopping mall where you can use the toilet if needed.

During the mid-way break in the tour you can buy some ice cream at the GUM shopping mall. There aren’t many other options or time for anything else. After the tour there are a lot of restaurants in the area. There are a couple of Varenichnaya №1 locations nearby if you would like some authentic Russian food. Their speciality is Russian dumplings. Another classic choice nearby is Grand Cafe Dr. Jhivago. While you can try traditional Russian foods like borscht and Olivier Salad, you may need a reservation. GUM has several restaurants, including a couple of buffets upstairs.

Recommendations

While I would start off your visit to Moscow with a tour of the Red Square, make sure to come back to each place to tour the inside. If you are visiting several sights consider buying the Moscow City Pass  to save money on admissions.

Other Tour Options

Another company  Moscow Free Tour  does a similar free walking tour in the Red Square. Check the site for the details on the starting point and times. If you prefer a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to St. Basil’s Cathedral included check out this tour . For a private paid tour with a hotel pick-up and a visit to the Kremlin included you may want to take this tour or this one . Even if you don’t typically take tours, I would recommend taking tours as much as possible in Moscow. Many people do not speak English and most information is not in English either.

Where to Stay in Moscow

Find somewhere to stay in Moscow near the Red Square so you are convenient to all the sights!

The Kremlin looks rather imposing. It would be great to explore the history in Moscow.

There is a lot of history in Moscow to explore!

What a handy guide to get the most of Moscow’s red square! I’ve always wanted to try a walking tour and this looks like the perfect place to start!

I really enjoy walking tours, I think they are a great way to get to know a new place!

You have highlighted all the main sights around and in the Red Square indeed! I have visited Moscow in winter and the atmosphere was magical…even though it was cold 🙂 I’m looking forward to visiting in summer too!

Yes, there is a magical feel during the winter. I have to say I prefer the warmer, brighter summers though 🙂

I am planning to go to Moscow and St. Petersburg this year so reading this was very helpful. I would love to do the walking tour! What time of year did you do it? I am planning to go in August as I really can’t stand the cold 😀 Do you think August might be a good time to visit Moscow? Thank you so much for your information!

I did the walking tour in September. July and August are the best times to visit Moscow in my opinion, so you are going at a great time! I lived in Moscow for a year so I have a lot of posts about Moscow and a couple for St. Petersburg too. Please check out my other posts as you are planning your trip and feel free to send any questions my way!

I’m a huge fan of taking free walking tours whenever my husband and I travel. We learn more about the history from the local’s perspective. Your walking tour in Moscow looks fun. The St. Basil’s Cathedral is beautiful and would love to see it. Thanks for sharing the must-see places in Moscow!

I’m a big fan of free walking tours too! I completely agree that you get a good perspective and introduction to the history of the city.

I would love to take the walking tour to get a good coverage of the area! The tip about paying for the bathrooms is great. That’s something I didn’t realize when I went to Europe for the first time from the US.

I always find it annoying paying for bathrooms in Europe!

I visited Moscow in June this year for the World Cup and I loved it. St. Basil’s Cathedral was the highlight for me, it’s such an impressive piece of architecture. I would’ve liked to visit more of Russia but maybe next time!

I really enjoyed Moscow during the World Cup too. The city was much livelier than usual!

I have been to St. Petersburg but never to Moscow. I think that these kind of tours are very useful to gather many information but I second your suggestion to visit the palaces inside as they have stunning interior decor and art treasures.

Yes, I think both going on tours and getting an overview and touring the inside of places are good to do.

St. Basil’s cathedral is definitely a beautiful place to visit. I would also love to stroll by the Alexander gardens and maybe spend some time in the shopping mall call mom maybe visit the theater, also I would love to visit Kremlin and the State Historical Museum. That’s a great list you have managed to provide here.

Never been to Russia, but the country’s history and culture has always fascinated me. Great list of things to do in Moscow’s Red Square. Kremlin is definitely on top of my list!

Russia does have a fascinating history and culture!

The architecture here always looks so beautiful. I would love to go to Russia. Some helpful tips here that would really help me navigate a future trip. I love the Russian ballet so a trip to the theater would be a must for me.

  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

bgt stability tour black putter shaft

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.
