New offering from Polyfibre, supposedly available only through the distributors. Polyfibre Tour Player 1.25mm According to the manufacturer it a completely different animal then other Polyfibre offerings. This string is aimed to provide a crisp feel, ultimate durability and tension stability while maintaining good shock absorption, obviously not as good as Viper or Black Venom but still. I'll be testing this string in a couple of weeks time in the Prince Tour 100T ESP.

Automatix said: Well the string is very different than other Polyfibre offerings. To me it felt dead, precise, durable, control oriented. Played OK in very open string pattern, especially in O-port frames. I underline, OK, not great, not good, simply it was OK without a wow factor in any category. I absolutely hated it in closed pattern with the exception of the H19. In that particular frame this string was pure gold for me. Overall, depends what you are after, for the price I think there are better offerings on the market. But to each his own. Click to expand...

Renowned Quality from a Leading Brand

The Polyfibre Tour Player Green Touch tennis strings are meticulously crafted in Germany, demonstrating the very highest level of workmanship and quality that Polyfibre is renowned for.

How to choose a tennis string?

Tennis racket’s motor is its string – at least that’s how we say. And it’s true. Quality of the game depends heavily on the type of the string and on its string tension (measured in kilograms, between 20 and 30 kg). These days there are more and more new rackets on the market without strings. It results from the fact that every tennis player should choose string and its tension according to his/her own preferences. It is very often recommended to change the basic string (if a racket has it) after the purchase and make a new one. Tension which was used in the factory to make a string and time which has passed since that can lead to poor game quality despite the fact that a good racket has been chosen. While choosing a string you should take into consideration its flexibility and size. Tension with which string should be made is usually given by the producer and it depends mostly on durability of the frame. Strings have one essential disadvantage – they have to be changed regularly. Frequency of string changing depends mainly on strength of player’s strokes, frequency of game, string size, type of balls (heavy balls cause the string to break quicker), randomness (impure stroke at frame), string moistness (natural strings made of animal guts use to break especially often). It is recommended to change string at least once a year even if it didn’t break. It results from the fact that string loses some of its features over time, particularly flexibility because of temperature changes and tension which is reduced while playing. We don’t adjust string to the racket. We choose string considering game style and own preferences.

Types of strings

There are a lot of types of tennis strings considering the material they are made of and their construction. Regarding used materials we can distinguish: the least comfortable (‘wire’), more comfortable strings, soft (polyester strings), synthetic, the most comfortable, but also very expensive natural strings, which are the least durable. Considering structure we can distinguish monofilament and multifilament strings – very comfortable with a good combination of playability and endurance. There are variations in between these extremes: from core with single rim, with many rims, with extra outside rim (e.g cube cross section shape), till the use of different materials in the same string.

String tension

String tension is very important for control and strength of the shot, flexibility and durability of the string. Reducing string tension makes string more comfortable (better reduces vibrations) and elastic. The ‘trampoline efect’ appears which causes that power is increasing and control is decreasing. Higher string tension makes opposite reactions.

The size of the string especially affects durability and flexibility. The size of the string is specified in millimeters between 1.1-1.4mm. The smaller the size of the string, the higher the flexibility. The higher the flexibility, the bigger ‘trampoline effect’ and the faster the ball, however in the same time the more the flexibility the better reduction of vibrations (higher comfort). Bigger size of the string means harder string – worse reduction of vibrations – less comfort. Players that are using a lot of spin should choose a thinner string, because it helps to generate spin. But the thinner the string, the less durability. In addition size of the string depends on string pattern. Thinner size of the string should be chosen to close string pattern.

Playability and durability of the string

A lot of brands use designation „playability” and „durability”. Unfortunately the more playable string, the less its durability. The highest durability have thick monofilament strings while thin multifilament and natural strings offer the best playability. All strings currently available on the market are a combination of these two details and also a compromise between playability and durability. There is no string that will guarantee both of this parameters. Rules worth to follow when changing the string

- thinner strings are better for generate more spin

- softer strings are reducing vibrations better then harder one

- thinner or more flexible strings allow to hit the ball faster

- thinner strings should be chosen for rackets with close string pattern and smaller headsize

- for rackets with high stiffness you shouldn't use very hard and thick strings

- stiff, monofilament strings are more durable

- multifilament strings are more comfortable, but less durable

- flexible strings give better acceleration then stiff one

- close string pattern (e.g. 18/20) gives better control, but less power and spin - open string pattern (e.g. 16/19) increase power and spin while control is worse

- rackets with bigger headsize give better dynamic and spin but decrease control

- harder string tension gives more control but decrease power and spin

- soft string tension gives better dynamic and spin (“shots go more inside the racket”), but control and durability are wrose

- thinner strings are healthier and more playable but less durable

-thicker strings offer better durability

-flexible strings offer better comfort, especially for players with tennis elbow. At the same time it gives more spin and power while durability decreases

-stiff strings offer better durability, however comfort of the game and power are smaller

Optimal Playing Feel with Polyfibre Tennis Strings

If you want to do good for your  tennis racket , you should string it regularly, which is definitely worthwhile since Polyfibre tennis strings provide an unmatched playing feel. For about three decades now, the string specialist from Germany has been developing high-quality  tennis strings  and continually researching new materials to improve its strings’ playing characteristics. Of course, that would not work without the input of those experiencing a stringing’s impact first-hand. Therefore, Polyfibre listens to tennis players’ opinions when developing strings. To achieve the best result, the brand also performs numerous field tests and continuously improves its materials.

When Polyfibre introduced its first tennis strings made of co-polymer in 1995, the company had already invested two years of research and testing – including putting them through the acid test with the help of the German Davis Cup team. Constant improvement is what drives Polyfibre. So, the company keeps expanding and improving its product range and today offers over 50 different strings, providing every playing type with a model perfectly suited to their game. In addition to first-class tennis strings, Polyfibre also produces different tennis accessories like grip bands.

Polyfibre Saiten

Tennis Strings by Polyfibre – Something for Every Playing Type

Polyfibre divides its tennis strings into five different construction categories, which you also find in our shop:

Those properties usually characterise the respective Polyfibre strings. Therefore, power strings help you accelerate the ball by absorbing its energy to return it immediately after impact. Polyfibre tennis strings for more spin, on the other hand, support your stroke’s attempt to increase the tennis ball’s rotation. In contrast, comfort strings are considered particularly arm-friendly as they absorb a large part of the ball’s energy, instead of passing it on to the wrist and elbow.

Polyfibre Saiten

If you are looking for precision and ball control, control strings are your weapon of choice, especially for powerful players. Suppose you focus on slow wear and long-lasting elasticity because your string consumption is considerably high; you need to go for Polyfibre tennis strings with enhanced durability. No matter which playing characteristics you especially enjoy, with Polyfibre tennis strings, you get the perfect stringing for your racket.

Many Different Polyfibre Tennis Strings to Choose from

In our online tennis shop, you choose from a wide range of the best Polyfibre tennis strings at great rates in different colours. Add the great deals we offer in our string shop, and you are very likely to pick up an excellent bargain. Polyfibre strings are available with the following string gauges:

  • 10 / 1.15 mm
  • 23 / 1.25 mm

Generally, thinner tennis strings improve your feel for the ball. In contrast, thicker models are more robust while facilitating ball control. When buying Polyfibre tennis strings from us, you can either go for  string reels  or a  string set . The former makes loads of sense for those spending hours and hours on the tennis court, and therefore string their rackets frequently. Also, if you have already found your favourite type of Polyfibre tennis strings, ordering a reel does a great job. Mid-term, it saves you money, plus you make sure that you can rely on your favourite stringing any time – and for orders over 150 euros, shipping is free. Now, we hope you enjoy browsing for your new Polyfibre tennis strings and trying them on the court.

PGA Tour players learn how much loyalty is worth in new equity program

Players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour amid lucrative recruitment by Saudi-funded LIV Golf are starting to find out how much that loyalty could be worth.

The PGA Tour on Wednesday began contacting the 193 players eligible for the $930 million from a “Player Equity Program” under the new PGA Tour Enterprises .

The bulk of that money — $750 million — went to 36 players based on their career performance, the last five years and how they fared in a recent program that measured their star power.

How much they received was not immediately known. Emails were going out Wednesday afternoon and Thursday informing players of what they would get. One person who saw a list of how the equity shares were doled out said the names had been redacted. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because many details of the program were not made public.

The Telegraph reported Tiger Woods was to receive $100 million in equity and Rory McIlroy could get $50 million, without saying how it came up with those numbers.

Commissioner Jay Monahan outlined the first-of-its-kind equity ownership program in a Feb. 7 memo to players, a week after Strategic Sports Group became a minority investor in the new commercial PGA Tour Enterprises.

Martin Trainer reacts after missing his putt on the 18th green during a playoff for the PGA Zurich Classic golf tournament at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La., Sunday, April 28, 2024. The team of Rory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, and Shane Lowry, of Ireland, defeated Trainer and teammate Chad Ramey to win the tournament. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

The private equity group, a consortium of professional sports owners led by the Fenway Sports Group, made an initial investment of $1.5 billion that could be worth $3 billion. The tour is still negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia — the financial muscle behind the rival LIV Golf league — as an investor.

Any deal with PIF would most certainly increase the value of the equity shares.

Another person with knowledge of the Player Equity Program, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the dealings, said the equity money is not part of the SSG investment. That money was geared toward growth capital.

Golf.com received a series of informational videos on the Player Equity Program that was sent to players and reported only 50% of the equity would vest after four years, 25% more after six years and the rest of it after eight years.

It also reported how the 36 players from the top tier were judged on “career points,” such as how long they were full members, victories, how often they reached the Tour Championship and extra points for significant victories.

Jason Gore, the tour’s chief player officer, said in one of the videos, “It’s really about making sure that our players know the PGA Tour is the best place to compete and showing them how much the Tour appreciates them being loyal.”

Emails also were sent to 64 players who would share $75 million in aggregate equity based on the past three years, and $30 million to 57 players who are PGA Tour members. Also, $75 million in equity shares was set aside for 36 past players instrumental in building the tour.

The program has an additional $600 million in equity grants that are recurring for future PGA Tour players. Those would be awarded in amounts of $100 million annually started in 2025.

Players only get equity shares from one of the four tiers now, although everyone would be eligible for the recurring grants.

Even with equity ownership geared toward making the PGA Tour better, the concern was players questioning who got how much and whether they received their fair share.

LIV Golf lured away seven major champions dating to 2018 since it launched in 2022, all with guaranteed contracts and most of them believed to have topped $100 million.

McIlroy, playing this week in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, was asked how much would make players feel validated for their decision to stay with the PGA Tour.

“I think the one thing we’ve learned in golf over the last two years is there’s never enough,” McIlroy replied.

DOUG FERGUSON

Benny and the Bets: Are signature players worth chasing at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson?

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

To chalk, or not to chalk, is a dilemma sports bettors face constantly, and it is no different in golf.

Last season, betting the favorites would have netted you a nice return on the PGA TOUR, but until Scottie Scheffler started his run this season, it was shaping a longshot central!

Scheffler’s dominance of late along with Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry’s team win in New Orleans last week at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans may have shifted the balance of power back to the chalk-friendly wagerers… or has it?

Can we start to believe, with the major season now in full swing, that the cream is rising to the top? Or has the new-look PGA TOUR schedule started to show some patterns we can trust?

With the return to a calendar-year schedule, the TOUR created a roster of Signature Events. The limited field, big-purse events scattered around THE PLAYERS Championship and the four majors are where the stars congregate.

It has given some clarity to those stars, who obviously make up the majority of chalk on a betting board when they play, in terms of their schedules. They know they’ll be at the Signature Events and the majors, and they sprinkle other PGA TOUR events, like this week’s THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, in and amongst their efforts.

The goal of all players is to win every week they play, but the elite are really trying to peak for the big ones. Those not in the Signature Events have the added carrot of pushing their way into the limited fields via the Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5 – or, of course, by winning.

Key stats for picking a winner at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

We’ve now had five of the eight Signature Events of the season, plus the PLAYERS and the Masters. It gives us some data to dissect.

Discounting The Sentry, as it was a season opener, we can look at what happened the week before Signature Events thus far. Before the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am we had Matthieu Pavon breakthrough for his first TOUR win at the Farmers Insurance Open. He was not yet eligible for the Signature Events.

Before The Genesis Invitational, we had Nick Taylor win the WM Phoenix Open. He was already eligible, although he needed to beat Charley Hoffman, who wasn’t eligible to that point, in a playoff to do so.

The week before the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard we saw Austin Eckroat, not yet eligible for Signature Events, win the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches.

Lastly, in the week before the RBC Heritage, we had the unique situation of Scheffler winning the Masters – clearly, he was already eligible. But, if we go back the week prior to the Masters, Akshay Bhatia – not eligible for Signatures or the Masters at that point – won the Valero Texas Open.

It was that same week this column talked about the distractions of the future being a factor. At the time my gut feeling was to suggest those already in the Masters were not the best options, yet I let the wise words of Golfbet colleagues pull me back from a more definitive take. Turned out, a non-Masters player in Bhatia won, but multiple guys heading to Augusta National were right behind him on the board including Denny McCarthy, who lost the playoff. Both sides could claim at least moral victories.

So with a few more data points now, can we say we are seeing a trend of those players who are on the outside of the elite, looking in, stepping up in the non-Signature Event weeks? With the Wells Fargo Championship upcoming next week at Quail Hollow, how does this affect those in the field at TPC Craig Ranch – and in turn, your bets?

The bottom line is, at the starting gate in Texas, I’d say next week doesn’t affect players at all. BUT, it can bring plenty of insight into live betting. Make sure to keep tabs on Golfbet’s Draws and Fades columns post round this week for nuggets on who to rely on mid-tournament.

Once things get going, and bad bounces and breaks enter the party, a player’s true mental capacity is tested. If defending champion Jason Day, also a previous winner at Quail Hollow, finds himself six back after 18 holes in Texas, will he grind to claw back, or will he play loose, take dead aim at pins, hoping for a 63 – but not concerned if it turns into a 73, knowing he can reload at Quail Hollow?

Will Texas local Jordan Spieth push his dodgy wrist to the limit if he has a rough start? Clearly if he opens with a 65 and is flying, he will look to surge forward. But if he’s sore after a 70, and eight back, at what point does self-preservation come into thinking?

On the other side of the coin does a Mark Hubbard, fresh off contending with Ryan Brehm in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and sitting just outside the cut off for the Aon Swing 5, have the momentum and the freedom of knowing he’s playing great golf and the carrot for bigger things is right there in front of him?

Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard miss playoff after 72nd hole par at Zurich Classic

Those playing like every week is their chance to change their lives are hungrier at times, and if they can push through the pressure of the moment like Pavon, Bhatia and Eckroat have done, then it truly can be life-changing.

Those who are:

Winner: Stephan Jaeger (+2800) – "A recent winner on TOUR who knows how to string together rounds in the 60s and has proven adept on the par 4s at TPC Craig Ranch. T11 here a year ago but playing with more confidence now."

Sidenote: Jaeger at +320 for Top Continental European is a bet I’d have my eye on.

Head-to-Head: Seamus Power (-125) over Beau Hossler – "A T19, T17 and T9 in the past at TPC Craig Ranch; a T12 last start; Power is a horse for this course. Almost slotted him in the top 10 section, but top 20 is clearly his sweet spot. Plus, the GB crew has a thing for fading Hossler in head-to-heads until he proves we should do otherwise!"

Sidenote: I love Power at +200 for a Top 20, or +400 for a Top 10 if feeling brave.

And those who aren’t:

Top 10: Mark Hubbard (+450) – "Hasn’t missed a cut all year and is coming off a great effort in Zurich Classic with Ryan Brehm. Hubbard has a brilliant SG: Approach game, always helpful here, and is 19th on TOUR in scoring average this season. Plus, and maybe this is the best reason, I can’t wait to see Matt DelVecchio’s face when he’s runner up to Jaeger, giving me two paydays, and him none.”

Sidenote: I can be argued into sprinkle options from outright to top 20 on Hubbard.

Longshot: Joseph Bramlett (+10000) – "If you want a longshot with more win equity then look at Power or two-time champ K.H. Lee but Bramlett is a lottery ticket option given he pops in some areas. Two top-20s in three starts at the course, and 25th on TOUR in Par-4 Scoring. Gained 1.426 total strokes per round on the field in his three starts at TPC Craig Ranch.”

Sidenote: Bramlett becomes a cool flyer for first round leader or top 20, top 40 markets.

But I want to add the other side of the coin for you in some of these markets as well.

Winner: K.H. Lee (+5000) – A two-time champion at TPC Craig Ranch can’t be discounted despite current form. No one expected him to win when he did, so why not catch lightning in the bottle again this week? With the new sponsor involved here you can be sure the Korean contingent will be fired up to play well. So don’t be afraid to look at Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim on the chalk (and Signature eligible) side of things.

Top 10: Tom Hoge (+320) – Second on TOUR for rounds in the 60s behind only Scheffler is iron maestro Hoge, who is also second on TOUR in SG: Approach. Ninth in birdie average bodes well in a shootout.

Pga tour lays out how the player equity program will work.

  • Rex Hoggard ,
  • Rex Hoggard

In February, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan introduced the rough outline of the Player Equity Program, a vesting plan for the circuit’s new for-profit arm that will carve up a hefty portion of the initial $1.5 billion investment from Strategic Sports Group. On Wednesday, players were given a more detailed version of the program, PGA Tour chief competitions officer Tyler Dennis confirmed on “Golf Central.”

The initial player equity grants will be approximately $930 million distributed to 193 players via four categories, starting with the game’s stars. Monahan informed players on Wednesday via a letter of their individual grants.

“There’s no other sports league in the world that has this significant number of their athletes as owners of their own sports organization,” Dennis said.

“We want to grow the PGA Tour in many different ways and having the alignment of players as player-owners with the organization is going to allow us to drive that quickly forward.”

The first group includes 36 players receiving $750 million in equity based on the last five years of play. “Career Points” will be awarded based on how many years a player has been a Tour member, how many times they earned a spot in the Tour Championship and how many times they have won, with extra points awarded for high-profile victories like the majors, The Players Championship and the FedExCup.

Group 2’s share of the initial equity will be much smaller ($75 million) and will be granted to 64 players. The group is considered “steady performers and up-and-comers” and will be based on FedExCup points earned over the last three years.

Equity to Group 3 will be $30 million going to 57 players based on career earnings and how many times a player finished inside the top 125 in FedExCup points.

The final group will include “past legends,” like Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, with $75 million going to 36 players based on the “Career Points” formula. Those grants will only be awarded to “past legends” that are living.

Perhaps most important to players will be the program’s eight-year vesting period. The grants will be worth 50% of their value after four years, 75% after six and 100% after eight years, when a player will be able to sell their equity in PGA Tour Enterprises, the for-profit arm the Tour created for the program. At each vesting benchmark players will be responsible to pay taxes on the grants.

The program has been created to encourage loyalty to the Tour in the face of ongoing challenges from LIV Golf, and the requirements of maintaining membership (which includes a minimum of 15 starts each year) would mean players who join LIV Golf would not be eligible for the program or would give up any unvested equity if they were to join the rival circuit.

“We want the players to be fully aligned with their organization,” Dennis said. “It’s something no other sport has done before and we’re seeing an incredible amount of excitement about that.”

SSG valued the PGA Tour at $12.3 billion when the group, which is led by Fenway Sports, became a minority investor and the assumption is that valuation will continue to increase like most professional sports franchises in the United States.

The remainder of the initial $1.5 billion investment (roughly $600 million) will be awarded in recurring player grants of $100 million each year, beginning in 2025 through 2030. These grants will be awarded based on performance and Player Impact Program results with an eye toward young talent, like Ludvig Åberg or Nick Dunlap.
