Virgin Money Policy Wording

There is no "best" travel insurance—the best for you will depend on factors like price points and features that you might find valuable. Please use the information in this review to help you narrow your choices.

Virgin Money Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

Virgin Money offers a series of holiday cover plans for reasonable prices, to suit those wanting a budget plan with just £1,500 of Cancellation and £1,000 of Baggage all the way up to those with more luxury holidays needing up to £7,500 for Cancellation and £3,000 of Baggage cover per person.

The cheapest Virgin Money travel insurance is the "Economy" plan, which is only available through comparison sites . The top-tier plan is the "Gold" plan, and this is only available directly from Virgin Money. Here's a high-level overview of their plans:

What's included?

Trip Cancellation, Emergency Medical, Legal Assistance, Personal Accident and Personal Belongings/Baggage are included on all policies—as is Scheduled Airline Failure . But end supplier failure is only on Premium and Gold plans (the top tier from comparison sites and direct).

Even the lowest tier plan includes some Missed Departure and Baggage Delay cover. However, there's no protection against natural disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions (including volcanic ash clouds), hurricanes, etc.

Like many other travel cover plans, kids basically go free (up to 3 children under the age of 18, per insured adult).

For those heading to the slopes, Winter Sports is optional now (they used to include it on annual plans). In terms of other travel insurance add-ons , cruise-specific cover is not an option on Virgin Money travel insurance, so if you're going on a cruise you may want to consider other holiday cover providers for access to features like Cabin Confinement, Unused Excursions and Missed Port.

Pre-Existing Conditions: As part of the online application you'll be asked a series of brief medical questions. If you have a medical condition, Virgin Money may be able to offer cover for some pre-existing medical conditions , for which you'll probably be required to pay a higher premium. Pre-existing conditions are only covered if they've been fully declared, accepted and paid for.

Covid: Virgin offers pretty good Covid benefits. Here's a sample of what's covered, extending Cancellation and Curtailment cover.

Cancellation:

  • You, Your Relative, a member of Your household or travelling companion or a friend with whom You had arranged to stay has a diagnosis of COVID-19 within 14 days of Your booked departure date, as certified by a Medical Practitioner following a medically approved test showing a positive result for COVID-19.
  • You being denied boarding on Your prebooked outbound travel due to You contracting COVID-19, as certified by a Medical Practitioner following a medically approved test showing a positive result for COVID-19 or having a confirmed temperature above 38 degrees Celsius.

Curtailment:

  • Death of Your Relative or a member of Your household living in the United Kingdom contracting COVID-19, as certified by a Medical Practitioner following a medically approved test showing a positive result for COVID-19 or having a confirmed temperature above 38 degrees Celsius.
  • The hospitalisation as a result of COVID-19 for treatment with mechanical ventilation, of Your Relative or a member of Your household living in the United Kingdom.

How do Virgin Money Travel Insurance Prices Compare?

Virgin Money travel insurance premiums are in line with market averages. Only Virgin's top-tier Black plans cost more than the average cost of holiday cover (shown by yellow bars in the charts below), whether you're travelling to geographies like Europe or America . Given that Baggage and Travel Delay are covered on all plans, we think Virgin Money offers solid value for money.

However, insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to each individual's details, so please just use this data for general educational purposes only about the travel insurance market; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation.

Buying Direct vs Using a Comparison Site

There are two ways to buy a Virgin Money travel insurance policy: direct from Virgin Money or via a comparison site like MoneySuperMarket. Broadly speaking, the cheapest plan is Economy, which is only available from comparison sites; the plan with the highest cover is the Gold plan, only available from Virgin Money direct.

There are pros and cons to both sources in terms of features and price points. We'll try to explain the differences to help you understand whether buying direct or through an aggregator (e.g., a comparison site) better suits your individual needs.

If the lower limits of the Economy or Standard plan are good enough for your needs then you can probably save money buying through the comparison site because our research revealed that the cost of Virgin Money's "cheapest" cover from each source can easily be 40% to 50% cheaper when buying through the comparison site —that is, Economy plans are consistently cheaper than Red plans.

Benefits of Buying via Comparison Site

If you're after a budget travel insurance plan, the cheapest holiday cover from Virgin Money is the Essential Plus plan, which is available only on comparison sites. Depending on details like geographic cover, you'll probably find cheaper plans on comparison site, but for a given level of cancellation cover, you might get higher limits in some other areas. For example, Red (direct) has £3,000 of cancellation as does Premium (comparison site), but Premium has higher limits for emergency medical, personal accident, personal possessions, financial failure, missed departure and more. But Red has higher travel delay benefits. And the excess is twice as much on the Premium plan. Also, direct plans include some level of gadget cover (and you can buy more), but comparison site plans only cover gadgets if you buy the add on. So there are trade offs.

Types of Virgin Money Travel Insurance Policies

Virgin Money offers five tiers of travel insurance—Economy, Standard, Premium, Red, Silver and Gold. The first three (Economy, Standard, Premium) can be purchased on a comparison site; Red, Silver and Gold are available direct from Virgin Money. All policies include Emergency Medical, Baggage and Cancellation/Curtailment.

Winter Sports cover can be added to Single Trip plans for an additional cost but is INCLUDED in Annual, Multi-Trip plans.

The upper age limits vary depending on whether you buy direct or through an aggregator site. Plans bought from comparison sites have lower upper age limits, so people in their 70s or above may have better success buying direct.

Age Limits When You Take Out a Virgin Money Travel Insurance Policy

While you can take as many trips as you want each year with a Virgin Money Annual, Multi-Trip policy, there are limits on trip length, depending on your age.

Virgin Money Trip Lengths for Annual Policies Vary According to Policy Type

  • Economy: 31 days
  • Standard: 31 days
  • Premium: 45 days
  • Red: 31 days
  • Silver: 45 days
  • Gold: 94 days

Single trips are limited to 90 days, unless agreed by them in writing.

Cover Limits

Here is a quick, high-level recap of what's on offer from comparison sites and direct:

For further information, please review the policy documents. If you would like us to go into more depth here, please let us know in the comments section at the bottom of this review!

Gadget and Valuables Extension:

Direct plans receive some level of gadget cover (e.g. for loss up to £500 for Red and Silver and £750 for Gold); plans bought from a comparison site don't include gadget as standard. But prior to leaving your home area, if you pay the appropriate extra premium Virgin Money can extend your cover to:

Unauthorised usage is limited to £1,000 for all options.

Notable Features

Here are some highlights of features available on Virgin Money travel insurance policies. Standard features like Medical and Personal Liability are also included on Virgin Money policies, limits for which can be found below in the Policy Limits section . For more complete details like inner limits and exclusions, please refer to the policy documents .

Bottom Line: We like that all Virgin Money plans include Baggage, which is the most common reason to claim on holiday cover. A range of reasonably-priced plans mean there's cover for a variety of customer profiles, from those heading on a cheap and cheerful holiday in the sun to those who have more at risk for a premium holiday.

The three best bank accounts with travel insurance bolted on: We pick our favourites and whether they're worth paying for

  • Some bank accounts include annual worldwide travel insurance
  • They often also include car breakdown cover and mobile phone insurance
  • Although there is a monthly cost, having such an account may make sense

Many Britons will feel a bank account isn't something they're prepared to pay for - after all, most current accounts are 'free'.

However, some packaged bank accounts offer a host of benefits that added together could justify their monthly cost.

The typical perks include free annual worldwide travel insurance, car breakdown cover and mobile phone insurance, often with family members included.

There is also the convenience factor of having three insurance policies taken care of saving both time and effort in having to organise it separately.

Some bank accounts charge a monthly fee, but throw in perks such as annual worldwide travel insurance.

Some bank accounts charge a monthly fee, but throw in perks such as annual worldwide travel insurance.

Michelle Stevens, banking expert at comparison site Finder, says: 'If you and your family are frequent travellers, then a current account with packaged travel insurance could be well worth the monthly fee, especially given the rising cost of travel insurance premiums in the last two years.

'But before signing up to any premium current account, it’s important you check that the terms of the travel insurance policy - as well as the other account features and perks - suit your needs.'

She adds: 'Another benefit of getting free travel insurance with a current account is that a lot of people usually forgo it - up to 8.6million in 2019 - which is not an advisable move.

'If you get seriously injured abroad then the bill can reach hundreds of thousands of pounds, so having travel insurance included with a current account may result in a lot of people getting covered who may not have done so otherwise.'

We pick our three favourite current account deals for travel insurance, taking into account the monthly cost and the additional perks on offer.

1.  Nationwide Flex Plus

This account offers worldwide travel insurance as well as mobile phone and European breakdown cover.

It does come with a £13 monthly charge, which, compared to other packaged bank accounts looks relatively cheap.

Its worldwide family travel insurance, includes winter sports, golf, weddings and business cover.

Nationwide offers worldwide travel, mobile phone and European breakdown cover and charges £13 a month for maintaining the account.

Nationwide offers worldwide travel, mobile phone and European breakdown cover and charges £13 a month for maintaining the account.

Cover for travel essentials includes luggage, documents and cash as well as protecting against travel-specific problems like delays, cancellations and medical expenses.

Then cancellation cover is up to £5,000, the medical expenses cover up to £10 million, whilst cover for travel disruption will be eligible when caused by natural disasters, or airline or travel end supplier failure.

The policy doesn't cover medical conditions unless they have been declared to Nationwide and accepted. In some instances, you can pay for a medical upgrade to your insurance policy.

Two other clauses to be aware of is that the longest trip length allowed is 31 consecutive days.

For any person to be insured who is aged 70 or over, they must buy an age upgrade to cover them.

Although the monthly cost will add up to £156 a year, it's possible to offset much of this during the the first year, thanks to Nationwide's current account switching incentive.

Non-Nationwide members can currently get £100 for switching, whilst members who switch to the Flex Plus account could get £125.

Saves the extra admin: Nationwide's annual travel insurance policy is worldwide, and covers a whole family for multiple trips, not just the individual account holder.

On top of travel insurance, account holders get vehicle breakdown cover both in the UK and the rest of Europe and mobile phone insurance for the whole family.

The car insurance is valid whether someone is a driver or a passenger in a vehicle, and comes with no excess to pay and unlimited callouts.

The mobile insurance covers mobiles belonging to the account holder and those belonging to their partner and dependent children. It covers for loss, theft, damage and faults.

2.  Virgin Money's Club M Account

Virgin's Club M Account comes with a £14.50 monthly charge.

Similar to Nationwide, it offers 31 days' worldwide cover per trip. It will cover the account holder and a partner living with them if there're both under 75, so it's a little more generous on that front.

Virgin's worldwide family multi-trip travel insurance - includes winter sports, golf and weddings. Plus, 24 hour access to a doctor at home or abroad.

Virgin's worldwide family multi-trip travel insurance - includes winter sports, golf and weddings. Plus, 24 hour access to a doctor at home or abroad.

There's also cover for up to four dependents under 18 - either in full time education or living with the account holder.

Emergency medical treatment, includes falling ill with coronavirus while away, and cover for the journey home, if it's medically necessary.

It also covers lost, damaged or stolen items, and if the baggage is delayed, any essentials will be paid for in the interim period. It also includes cover for delays or missed departures and winter sports as standard.

Account holders are also covered when cancelling or cutting short a trip if they fall ill with coronavirus as long as they didn't know they had it and weren't being tested for it when they booked their trip.

The cover includes emergency medical, surgical, hospital, treatment and ambulance costs, as well as any additional accommodation and travel expenses if someone cannot return to the United Kingdom.

There is a maximum allowance of 31 days of worldwide cover per trip.

It covers the account holder and their partner living with them if they're both under 75. There's also cover for up to four dependents under 18.

A claim will be void if it relates to any medical treatment received because of a medical condition or an illness related to a medical condition which a person knew about at the time of opening the account.

What else?

On top of the travel insurance it also offers UK breakdown cover with no call out charges, whether as the driver or the passenger and offers help at the roadside and at home.

It also offers worldwide mobile phone and gadget insurance covering against loss theft, damage, and breakdown

Just make sure you've declared any pre-existing medical conditions and don't leave your valuables unattended to be fully covered.

It offers access to an easy-access linked savings account paying 1.71 per cent on balances up to £25,000. C ustomers can also benefit from 2.02 per cent on balances up to £1,000 in their bank account.

New customers switching to the Virgin Money Club M Account can also receive a bonus of 20,000 Virgin Points to spend with Virgin Red, thanks to Virgin Money's latest current account switching offer.

Virgin Red is a rewards club that turns everyday spending into points. Once you are a member, you can earn and spend Virgin Points across almost 200 different rewards.

The 20,000 Virgin Points boost means travellers could get a return flight to Barbados, the Bahamas or St Lucia, while bakery enthusiasts could turn their points into 100 sausage or vegan sausage rolls, 61 coffees or teas or 100 doughnuts or muffins.

3.  Halifax Ultimate Reward Current Account

Halifax Ultimate Reward current account costs £17 per month, the equivalent of £204 per year. However, there are ways to dramatically reduce this via its cashback and switching offers.

The account includes a family travel insurance policy for the account holder, their spouse or partner and children aged 18 or under, or up to 24 if they're in full time education.

It includes cover for personal belongings, certain sports and activities such as winter sports golf trips.

At £17 a month Halifax is the most expensive of our three top picks. However, its £150 cash incentive and £5 monthly cashback could help account holders to significantly reduce the cost.

Its cover includes, up to £10million for hospital fees, repatriation, medical confinement, funeral and dental costs incurred if taken ill or injured on your trip.

Up to £5,000 in total for loss of pre-paid travel and accommodation expenses in the case of cancellation or curtailment.

It also covers personal money up to £750 for loss, or theft. This includes up to £300 cover for cash. This is limited to £50 for under 16s.

Watch out:

Existing medical conditions are not covered, unless these are agreed with the insurer first, and an additional premium may be payable.

The longest trip length is 31 consecutive days. For winter sports, a maximum of 31 days cover in a calendar year.

Halifax's travel insurance covers personal Baggage up to £2,500 if it is lost, damaged or stolen.

Halifax's travel insurance covers personal Baggage up to £2,500 if it is lost, damaged or stolen.

It's also worth noting that a £75 excess per adult per incident may apply and to be covered trips must start and end in the UK.

All cover ends when the account holder turns 71. As long as the account holder is less than 71, their spouse or partner will also be covered until they reach 71.

Eligible children can also be covered so long as they are travelling with the spouse, partner or civil partner of the policyholder.

What else:

It also offers car breakdown cover with the AA. This covers any vehicle the account holder is travelling in, at the roadside or at home. But only in the UK.

For mobile insurance, it covers breakdown, accidental damage, loss and theft up to £2,000.

However, it only Covers one phone per account holder or two in the case of a joint account. An excess of £100 is payable on all successful claims.

The £17 fee makes it a little more expensive than a few others but there are ways to reduce the cost.

Halifax is currently offering a £150 switching incentive for those who switch from another current account.

Not worth the paper it’s printed on.

Travel insurance which has so many caveats that you are unable to make a claim for anything. They did everything they could to say why they didn’t need to compensate for my cancelled flights and delays, rather than trying to help. It has been a longwinded and stressful waste of time. Do not buy travel insurance from Virgin.

Statement received was £10,000 short

Statement received was £10,000 short. Spent all forenoon trying to sort it, couldn't get through to anyone. Just a very inefficient company.

So difficult to make a gadget claim..gave up in the end

Tried to claim on portal. After various instructions from webchat which didn't work. Called help line they gave me a number to call. Called that number they gave another number to call. Got a link for a form to complete. Ridiculously stupid amount of paperwork needed. Some items I didn't have like utility bill as I'm 18 and live with parents. Luckily I was insured under nationwide home policy. Called up after 10min call new phone comes in 3 days. Will never use virgin again.

Waste of money taking this insurance

I was informed that my flight was cancelled after reaching airport and airlines couldn't provide alternative flights within 36 hours. When I contacted airlines for the expenses I incurred, they told me that only travel insurance company will pay. There was no way to call this insurer and I could submit my claim online only with all the receipts, screenshots etc. They had come back after one month saying that they will not cover anything for expenses incurred due to flight cancellation. Every time I reply back, they take about 2 weeks to respond. At the end, I didn't get a single penny back inspite of taking this insurance. It would have been better off not taking this insurance at all

Date of experience : 22 October 2023

Travel insurance which does not cover

Travel insurance I took out clearly states nill excess for dental emergency on the policy. However, when I put my unfortunate claim through, the 3rd party insurer replied and used excess for other medical excess saying they are not liable for the cost. I looked up the policy again, only to see nill excess for dental emergency. Upon writing back asking for a full refund as the contract is breached and handing of the claim is very unprofessional, I received a reply saying I am correct that no excess. 2 weeks later, I receive another email saying they cannot pay my claim as not over excess. I fully not recommend Virgin Money Insurance for Travel. I hear Stayaure is very good in such handling so find a better insurance.

Avoid Virgin Travel at all Costs.

I had a serious accident whilst on holiday, which wasn’t my fault. I sustained a broken femur. Virgin Travel Insurance were informed within 20 minutes of arriving in hospital. It took them 8 days to tell me they weren’t going to pay out. The call centre is a joke and their emails are illiterate. Avoid this absolute disgrace of a company at all costs.

Had to pay hospital bill in the USA…

Had to pay hospital bill in the USA December still no money back will never yous this company again . What's the point of haveing travel insurance if there don't pay medical bill

Terrible customer service

Terrible customer service. Even renewing took ages and had to answer every question again. Lost patience when wanting to add winter cover, and have now cancelled. Awful.

Date of experience : 01 March 2024

Had travel insurance and had to add new…

Had travel insurance and had to add new medical condition on to policy. Took 1.5 hrs hanging on the phone before answered. Then going to charge an extra £83 to add the condition.. it was annual policy so asked for pro rata money back and went with another company who charged £28 for the medical condition to be added . All told 2hrs on phone

I would take your money elsewhere

I would take your money elsewhere. Reading these reviews I only wish I had read them before trying to invest in an isa. I set up an online profile to open an isa. It constantly kept rejecting my password. After numerous attempts to get logged back in and 3 password changes later it told me I couldn’t open an ISA and to call them. Their lines close at 6pm. This morning I just spoke to the most horrendous female virgin money rep. She actually accused me of screaming at her when I didn’t raise my voice once. She was useless and far from helpful. She clearly just couldn’t be bothered to help or was not equipped to. Terrible experience trying to open a simple ISA and owing to the rude incompetent woman this morning I have closed my online profile and will take my investment elsewhere. Terrible experience. No wonder your reviews are so bad.

Date of experience : 27 February 2024

Well yet another month has passed and…

Well yet another month has passed and nothing from virgin money about the insurance policy for my holiday cancellation due to Covid. Gallager Bassett who handle their claims are hopeless and still not responding to calls or emails asking for an update on the claim. Why would a company as big as Virgin continue to use a company who are clearly not up to the task. This can not be doing Virgin's reputation any good or maybe they don't care once they get the money from you. Very disappointed.

Date of experience : 05 October 2023

AVOID at all costs

AVOID at all costs. I wish I’d seen these reviews before attempting to open a Business Account Fixed Term Deposit; well I’m a Month in and it still isn’t opened. My money has gone into their ‘holding’ account while I earn no interest on it at all: My advice is don’t go near this company; I want out.

Date of experience : 06 February 2024

Terrible service

Terrible, all outsourced to CSAL who are apparently massively understaffed per my conversations with claims handlers and the mammoth waiting times on hold. Literally feel your life passing by constantly chasing. Whilst they help themes to incredibly long response times. Suspect all aimed at people losing the will and giving up on the claim itself. That or at least deferring payment as long as they possibly can to maximise their profits. Avoid

Not deserving even 1 star

Not deserving even 1 star. DO NOT FALL FOR VIRGIN BUSINESS CURRENT ACCOUNT!! Horrific experience from start to finish. Staff is incompetent and they lie on a daily basis. No comms no updates! AVOID

Date of experience : 25 January 2024

So bad I thought I'd bought scam insurance

Agree with other negative reviews on this site, after our baggage being lost for nearly 3 days on a trip to Paris, we claimed for some essential items and the claim just sat, and sat, and sat with no response. Complete cut and dried case, all the correct paperwork, just nothing happened. Tried contacting them by various means for weeks, completely unresponsive, almost scam-worthy

Date of experience : 16 November 2023

This travel insurance is worthless

This travel insurance isn’t worth anything in fact it should be classed as a scam. We had our flight cancelled back in August we have sent them all the details a short response giving you a claim number. Many many emails later no response to any of them avoid this insurance at all costs we had the silver annual package totally disgusted by the none existent communication.

Date of experience : 26 August 2023

I was taken ill on holiday. Eventually had some money back ( 6 months later), but no where near my legitimate claim. Every excuse not to pay was used. Virgin should be renamed Dick Turpin insurance. Your claim ends up being looked at by a different company who I am sure are on commission for what they save Virgin. Avoid at all cost! Scandalous way to treat people.

Date of experience : 10 May 2023

Poor customer service. I had an accident in September in…

I had an accident in September in majorica it took multiple phone calls because line kept cutting off. Eventually I got through and gave details to all questions. Got home but cannot get anyone to answer my emails about my claim after multiple emails. No one answers phone you can be on hold for one hour . Unfortunately I have a yearly policy so not hopefully I will ever get my £150 medical fees back.

Date of experience : 15 September 2023

Holiday cancellation

Unfortunately we had to cancel our holiday due to a bereavement. I submitted all our evidence onto the online portal 3 months ago and today I have received confirmation that my claim has gone through. The money to cover our holiday is in now my bank this afternoon, I have given this a 4 star as I do think the communication could be better, it’s very impersonal dealing with an inbox and portal and not being able to deal with anyone direct. It would have been helpful to have understood how the claim process worked. When I read the reviews on here I started to doubt the company. Anyone submitting a claim you just need to be patient and let the case handlers do their work. This holiday insurance provided the cover we needed at this unfortunate time.

Date of experience : 10 January 2024

Rubbish company

I suspect Virgin have employed an I.T company to ensure their claim website is very difficult to use. They do exist... I eventually gave up with the online claim, completed the form to be e.mailed. The Virgin email server was unable to receive e.mails 22 - 28 Sep. Virgin online chat gave me an alternative email address which gave the same result. Daniel on Virgin helpline was unable to answer my queries. Avoid at all costs. Crap company who make a concerted effort to stop you claiming

Here are the 3 best chase balance transfer credit cards of 2024, save money with these chase credit cards that offer 0% introductory aprs on balance transfers..

thumbnail

Credit card interest rates are often higher than other financial products like personal loans or mortgages so it's best to pay off your credit card balance in full every month . However, that isn't always possible so many people may wind up with high-interest credit card debt. In these situations, taking advantage of a 0% balance transfer offer can reduce the interest you pay and help you pay off your credit card debt more quickly.

Chase is known for issuing some top travel credit cards , but it also has several cards that offer an intro 0% APR for balance transfers. Consider these Chase balance transfer credit cards if you're hunting for a balance transfer offer. (See our methodology for information on how we chose the best Chase balance transfer credit cards).

Best Chase balance transfer credit cards

  • Best for long intro APR: Chase Slate Edge℠
  • Best for cash back: Chase Freedom Unlimited®

The Chase Slate Edge℠ is a no annual fee card with several features that can help you pay less interest, but doesn't earn rewards.

Get an automatic review for a higher credit limit when you pay on time and spend $500 in the first six months.

Notable perks

With the Chase Slate Edge , you are automatically considered for a 2% APR reduction if you pay your monthly bill on time and spend at least $1,000 on the card before your next account anniversary (terms apply). While you'll want a plan to pay off your balance transfer before the interest kicks in, this feature can help you lower your APR compared to what you might pay with other credit cards.

This card's insurance benefits include purchase protection, extended warranty protection, roadside dispatch and rental car collision and theft coverage (secondary in the U.S.).

[ Return to card summary ]

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is one of CNBC Select's top no-annual-fee cash-back credit cards with a unique intro bonus and a handful of useful benefits to complement its cash-back earnings.

  • 6.5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Travel
  • 5% back on Lyft rides (through Mar. 31, 2025)
  • 4.5% cash back on dining
  • 4.5% cash back at drug stores
  • 3% cash back on all other purchases (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year)

Earn an additional 1.5% cash back on everything you buy (on up to $20,000 spent in the first year).

Cardholders can earn 5% cash back on Lyft rides through March 2025 and enroll for three complimentary months of DashPass (activate by Dec. 31, 2024). Purchases are also covered by a range of built-in protections like rental car collision damage insurance (secondary in the U.S.), extended warranty coverage, purchase protection and trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

While this is a cash-back credit card , you can boost the value of the rewards you earn by pairing this card with a Chase card that allows points transfers (such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card ). By transferring the rewards you earn to travel partners like World Hyatt, United MileagePlus and Air Canada Aeroplan, you can potentially book luxury hotels and flights for fewer points.

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ packs a punch with generous rewards in bonus categories that change every quarter and an easy-to-earn welcome bonus.

  • 5% cash back on the first $1,500 spent in categories that change each quarter, then 1% cash back (activation required)
  • 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards®
  • 3% cash back on dining
  • 3% cash back at drug stores
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

Earn a $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Cardholders receive discounts and special perks with partners like Lyft and DoorDash. There are also many valuable built-in protections for a no-annual-fee card, including:

  • Cell phone insurance
  • Rental car insurance (secondary in the U.S.)
  • Extended warranty coverage
  • Purchase protection
  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

When you have a Chase card that unlocks the ability to transfer Chase points to hotel and airline partners (like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card) , it increases the value of the Freedom Flex. So this isn't only a strong standalone rewards credit card , but it has synergies with other cards.

How to complete a Chase balance transfer

Chase typically charges a balance transfer fee from 3% to 5% with a $5 minimum. Before you complete a balance transfer , be sure the interest you save will outweigh the fee.

There are several ways to do a balance transfer with Chase. One of the best and easiest options is to complete a balance transfer when you apply for a card. When you do this, you'll be able to make the most out of your intro APR because any 0% interest timeframe you qualify for begins when you open the card.

If you want to perform a balance transfer with a Chase card you already have, you'll need to log in to your account and follow these steps:

  • Click "Pay & Transfer"
  • Then click on the "Transfer" dropdown menu
  • Select "Card balance transfers"

You can then select any of your Chase cards from a dropdown menu and see what balance transfer offers are available.

Are Chase balance transfers worth it?

When you make a balance transfer, you'll generally pay a fee of 3% to 5% of the balance. To determine whether a balance transfer is worth it, calculate how much you would save in interest compared to how much you'd pay in transfer fees.

What is one disadvantage of a 0% interest balance transfer card?

Aside from the balance transfer fees, the biggest downside to a balance transfer is you'll have the same amount of credit card debt as before. If you don't have a plan, or the resources, to pay off your debt before the intro APR expires, you'll be stuck paying interest once again.

Do balance transfers hurt your credit?

A balance transfer doesn't directly hurt your credit score and could help improve your credit if you're able to pay down your debt. However, you'll want to keep in mind that your credit score will temporarily dip when you apply for new credit (including a balance transfer card).

Bottom line

The top balance transfer cards Chase issues offer intro APR periods of 15 to 18 months, and these intro APR offers also apply to purchases, making them even more useful. If you're interested in paying less interest , these are some of the best offers available. When you're in credit card debt, your primary focus should be repayment, not earning rewards, but the fact that some of the cards on this list earn rewards is a nice bonus.

Our methodology

To determine which Chase cards are best for balance transfers, CNBC Select analyzed the Chase credit cards with intro APR balance transfer offers. We compared each card on a range of features, including the annual fee, rewards, welcome bonus and balance transfer fee. We also considered additional perks, consumer protections, the application process when available and how easy it is to redeem rewards. However, when you're in credit card debt, your priority should be repayment, so we focused more on the cards that provide consumers with the cheapest ways to pay off their debt rather than the number of rewards they could potentially earn.
