Urban Soundtracks: Rostov-on-Don According to Motorama

' src=

For reasons unknown to me, Russian music has never broken into the Western consciousness, beyond that brief t.A T.u phase in the 2000’s. Americans just never caught on to the wonder that is Philipp Kirkorov, I suppose. Nonetheless,  Motorama has carved out a small niche for themselves as an underground hit. Maybe this is down to their lyrics being in English, or perhaps it’s the fact that they have a near-perfect capacity to summarize our twisted emotional landscape with their own brand of Post Punk.

Hailing from Rostov, Russia, they were formed outside the Moscow and Saint Petersburg cultural centers, which produce the bulk of the nation’s cultural exports. Known for being a far more rough city, Rostov appears to be the ideal backdrop for Motorama’s amazing capacity to engender emotions, like disappointment and anxiety. However, little writing is produced about the city and it attracts few tourists from outside Russia. As such, we spoke to  Vladislav Parshin from the band, and he kindly put together a bit of a mix to understand the place a bit more.

For most people anything outside of Russia, the country is a complete mystery. How did being from Rostov shape your musical tastes and you guys as artists?

For me the main influence was my father who showed me tons of great music from the Soviet Union and abroad and all these songs formed my tastes. Rostov-on-Don is also an important part of shaping the taste, as I knew personally the members of the New Wave/Post-Punk 90’s bands like Elen  and Matrosskaya Tishina , they influenced me in the beginning of the 2000’s.

It is interesting looking at musical scenes that are outside the centers of arts like Manchester, Seattle, and Louisville. It is as if being removed from the mainstream conversation allows you to produce something completely unique and personal. To a certain degree, do you think that your band was almost blessed to be outside the major cities of mainstream culture?

I won’t say that it was a blessing, but it was fine for us as a band. I think that living outside the big cultural spots is a good chance for creating something by yourself, you have more free time, instead of visiting never ending exhibitions, concerts and parties. But at the same time it’s harder to meet people who share the same ideas and who can help you in what you are doing. In general I feel comfortable living in Rostov-on-Don, we are flying to Moscow and St. Petersburg from time to time only because of the concerts.

The mix is fantastic. It is very Post Punk/synth-inspired. However, it is hardly the most ‘sunshine and rainbows’ mix. You’ve said in other interviews that there is nothing exciting about your home city of Rostov. Does that contribute to the sound of the mix?

I like such music and I think it suits our city.

In many articles, your work has been compared to British post-punk bands but I think it is fair to say that you’re part of a broader Soviet/post-Soviet tradition of bands like Kino. What is it about this darker style of music that continues to attract people across different generations in the former USSR?

I think that there’s a specific side in Russian character that is connected with such dark or sorrowful music. For example, lots of traditional folk songs from different parts of Russia are based on metaphysical stories connected with faith and death. All these existential problems are reflected in different art genres here, not only with music, but also literature.

Breaking News

Entertainment | rainy season isn’t quite over yet; bay area braces for another cold storm, entertainment, subscriber only, entertainment | a chat with dave prinz of amoeba music, the world-famous indie-record store, the record store suffered from covid lockdowns and downloading, but is back thanks to the surprising growth of vinyl collecting.

Started in Berkeley in 1990 by music-loving record collectors Marc Weinstein, Dave Prinz and Mike Boyder, Amoeba sprouted locations in San Francisco and Hollywood and soon became the biggest independent music store in the world. Amoeba sells and trades records, sure, but it has also delivered legendary in-store concerts with Valhalla-level artists like Patti Smith and Paul McCartney.

Downloading, streaming and the pandemic took their toll in recent years, and Amoeba was forced to temporarily close its L.A. store. But it’s since reentered the good times, surging on a wave of vinyl demanded by a new generation of vintage record lovers. Step into the Berkeley location, and you’ll be overwhelmed by the delightful things on offer. There are sections for jazz, metal, New Orleans, soundtracks and spoken word (like “Allen Ginsberg Reads Kaddish,” which the poet wrote on Dexedrine and LSD). There are $100 sealed Miles Davis LPs and $1 cassette tapes, T-shirts for The Germs and Public Enemy and clothing patches for James Brown and the Sex Pistols.

These days, Prinz lives in Point Reyes but spends time on Maui, where he paused during a recent tropical squall to chat.

Amoeba wouldn’t exist without cannabis >>>

After Prinz sold his Bay Area chain of Captain Video stores in the 1980s, he was looking for something else to get into. Shopping at San Francisco’s Streetlight Records, he met Weinstein, the store manager, and formed a fragrant bond. “I used to bring back pot from Hawaii, which he’d never had,” Prinz recalls. They decided to open an independent music store in a college town — Berkeley. “We became pretty good friends, and that’s how Amoeba started – me smoking Hawaiian pot with Marc Weinstein.”

A huge day in Amoeba history involved Sir Paul McCartney >>>

Amoeba has held in-store concerts for everyone from Nancy Sinatra to Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello, The White Stripes and Billie Eilish. Prinz’s favorite memory? In 2007, Paul McCartney and his touring band recorded a secret concert at the Hollywood Amoeba. In the audience was Alanis Morissette, Joe Walsh and Ringo Starr. “Ringo didn’t really like to be in crowds, and he was a little nervous,” says Prinz. “I said, ‘Why don’t you stand in my row, and I’ll guard the end?’ Ringo felt comfortable enough in the crowd to watch his old bandmate.”

Celebrities love (and love shopping at) Amoeba >>>

Eric Clapton was swarmed by customers on his visit, but Jimmy Page and Robert Plant have shopped there with no problems – though Plant, when asked to step around a security gate, joked that “for a bunch of hippies, you guys sure have a lot of rules!”

Founded in Berkeley, Calif. in 1990, Amoeba Music remains a fixture on Telegraph Avenue, Friday, March 8, 2024. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

Prinz was “totally surprised” that vinyl came back >>>

“We love to have kids from UC Berkeley shop in our stores, because they’re the future of America and the future of people who are going to support the music industry. Having kids shop for vinyl again has changed everything. Go to a store on Record Store day, and you’ll see how many there are, looking for artists they care about.”

CDs aren’t headed for the landfill, just yet >>>

Sales may be down for new compact discs, but Amoeba is selling more used CDs than ever before. “There’s a big market for those, because there’s a lot of stuff not on vinyl right now,” Prinz says.

Magnets branded with their iconic Amoeba Music logo are among the merchandise for sale at the Telegraph Avenue store in Berkeley, Calif., Friday, March 8, 2024. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

And don’t throw away your old boombox >>>

Everything has its cycles. Right now, physical media is experiencing a huge boom. “Even cassettes are popular again, which is really crazy,” says Prinz. “That’s a format you’d think would be totally dead by now.”

A rack of 45s are for sale at Amoeba Music in Berkeley, Calif. on Telegraph Avenue, Friday, March 8, 2024. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

Expect a big Louis Armstrong project to drop soon >>>

Prinz has spent almost a decade hunting down items from the jazz giant’s 400-page discography and hopes to do, he says, what “iTunes and Spotify couldn’t do, which is actually put a discography of an artist together correctly.” Armstrong was never beholden to one label – he recorded for more than 50. When Decca tried to lock him up by sending thugs out to “persuade” him (this was a real practice), he moved to France to record for a couple of years.

Prinz tracked down hundreds of sources from around the planet to gather and remaster his catalog. “It was like putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle,” he says. “At least half the songs in that discography weren’t official releases, and most people haven’t heard them. I’d like to get those out sometime soon as a downloading site (supported by donations). I think that’d be a real gift to the world.”

A customer browses the racks of vinyl at Amoeba Music on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, Calif., Friday, March 8, 2024. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

The jams an independent record-store founder listens to are … obscure >>>

“I love collecting records, that’s how I got into this business,” Prinz says. “My dream was, I used to go into a record store, right? And I’d see this big stack of cool records that just came in and see a guy going over them and then the owner coming over to look at them. I said, ‘I want to be that guy – the guy who gets to look at the stack of records first, before everybody else gets in there, and you have to fight for the ones everybody wants.’ And now I am.”

Prinz has about 4,000 CDs and perhaps 6,000 LPs, but what he’s digging at the moment is playing 78s on a 1948 Wurlitzer jukebox. “I have almost every Django Reinhardt 78 – he’s one of my favorite artists – and a lot of rockabilly 78s. I just got this amazing 78 of Eddie Bond doing ‘Slip, Slip, Slippin’ In,’ which I’ve been looking for for years. I got Ray Charles’ ‘Hit the Road Jack’ recently, which is a great 78 to hear, and 10 Beatles 78s, real ones, like an acetate of the Beatles doing ‘Crying, Waiting, Hoping’ at a BBC session. That’s what I’m really into, so I’m really retro.”

Restoring the ancient city of Rostov

It is no accident that these two dates are being celebrated at the same time. Rostov was first mentioned in the Primary Chronicle for the year 862. In this year, the Varangian brothers were invited to Rus.

Rostov, with its capital in Lagoda, soon became part of Ryurik’s state. From the end of the 10 th century, Rostov was the center of the Rostov diocese. From the 11 th century on, it was the central city of the Russian princes’ north-eastern possessions – the place that became the foundation of modern Russia. Yaroslavl, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Vladimir, Belozersk and even Moscow were built on the lands of the once vast Rostov-Suzdal princedom.

Rostov the Great celebrates its 1150 anniversary

View the gallery: Rostov the Great celebrates its 1150th anniversary

The importance of Rostov is not as great today as it was centuries ago – it is a small district center with a population of just over 30,000 people. Still, the dust of the ages is carefully preserved here. In fact, preservation is something of a tradition in Rostov.

The first people to make efforts to preserve monuments here were local merchants in the 1880s who bought the once sumptuous building of the Metropolitan’s residence. The building had been abandoned after the Metropolitan’s cathedral was moved to the larger, principal city of the province, Yaroslavl. If not for the enlightened merchants of Rostov, who built a museum of church antiquities in the bishop’s former residence, the world famous monument that is now known as the Rostov Kremlin would most likely not exist today in its original form.

Since then, the magnificent ensemble of the bishop’s court, which includes six churches and numerous auxiliary buildings, has fallen under state protection. Moreover, this monument, which was preserved at one time by the wise people of Rostov, has today become a real support for the city – a magnet for tourists and a source of development of Rostov itself.

Substantial restoration work done on Rostov’s Kremlin, in preparation for the 1,150 th anniversary of the city. Finances were tight, though – as the anniversary of Russian statehood approached, Rostov had counted on more solid involvement from the federal budget in the restoration of its monuments.

The earliest building to be part of the metropolitan’s residence ensemble – the Cathedral of the Assumption (1508–1512) presently requires enormous financial investment. Very similar to its namesake in the Moscow Kremlin, this majestic structure was handed over to the church twenty years ago, but no large-scale restoration work has been done there.  As part of the “Russia’s Culture” program, the cathedral’s façade was restored on the eve of Rostov’s anniversary, but there is still no end of work to be done inside. On the other hand, restoration work has been virtually completed on the famous bell tower and its 35,000-pound bells. By the end of the year, promises head of Rostov Yuri Boiko, the city’s Kremlin will stand in its full glory once again.

Rostov the Great: Discovering medieval Russian architecture

Yaroslavl: Crown of Medieval Russian Art

Belozersk: Home of ancient princes and Vikings

Unfortunately, the main “sore tooth” in Rostov – the Stable Yard, the only such building surviving in Russia from the 17 th century – still remains in a depressing state. Once a two-story building standing at the entrance of the Kremlin, it is now a shocking ruin. Here too, however, there are grounds for optimism – this monument of federal-level significance has been included in the Ministry of Culture’s program, and the first 15 million rubles ($478,000) have been allocated to its restoration.

But Rostov is more than just a collection of architectural, cultural and historic monuments. Rostov is a living, developing city trying to keep in step with modern times.

Owing to resources allocated from budgets at various levels for anniversary preparations, the roads in the city have been repaired. A sewage pumping station has been built, the district hospital and schools have been repaired, and refurbishment work has been done on the city park, where a never-before-seen marvel in Rostov has appeared – an esplanade on the shore of Lake Nero. So far it is only 985 feet long; but, for a city whose “esplanades” (as Governor Sergei Yastrebov once put it) were “goat tracks along which the local fishermen would risk their lives to get to the water,” this is an enormous achievement.

Paving slabs have been laid on the central streets, street lighting has been repaired, and benches and metal waste bins have been installed everywhere. The façades of housing blocks have been refurbished, largely at the expense of the owners. Entrepreneurs are buying buildings, repairing them and opening shops, hotels and restaurants in them.

“It’s a typical situation: an entrepreneur rents or buys a ‘dead’ area – former merchants’ mansions that had been made into communal flats. We are helping to rehouse some people under state and regional programs, and the owners are returning to these houses, which is radically changing the atmosphere of the area – everything’s been freshened up, flowers have been hung up, and businesses are being set up here. The center is almost entirely made up of architectural, historical and cultural monuments. But the entrepreneurs are going to additional expense, going through all the bureaucratic procedures; this vanguard has followed behind us, and some of them are even ahead of us,” city head Boiko said.

How to reach Rostov

Long-distance trains, fast electric trains and suburban electric trains with changes can all bring you to Rostov. Trains for Rostov the Great depart from the Yaroslavsky rail terminal in Moscow. The journey takes 3 to 3.5 hours. Rostov now has more than two dozen large and small hotels with more than 1,000 beds. You can book the hotel of your choice on the city administration’s website (in Russian).

According to the head of the city, people are ashamed “when it’s been fixed up to the right and restored to the left, but you still have dirt and run-down property.” Some entrepreneurs have therefore simply started joining forces and restoring their own façades.

“In terms of our biggest hopes, we cannot say we’ve achieved everything. But as far as making the city comfortable and attractive to tourists is concerned, we’ve simply taken an enormous step forward. The anniversary means we’ve been able to modernize the city infrastructure and lay the groundwork for rapid growth in the tourism industry, in terms of hospitality and accommodation. This will develop more and more,” said Boiko.

Incidentally, although Rostov has scarcely marked its 1,150 th anniversary, it has already started preparing for another important date – 2014 will be the 700 th anniversary of the birth of Sergius of Radonezh. Father Sergius was born near Rostov, giving his modern-day compatriots an additional chance to tackle a few more problems in the city.

Five-star Bayern roll over Rostov

Tuesday, September 13, 2016

Article summary

Robert Lewandowski's penalty was added to by Thomas Müller, Juan Bernat and two Joshua Kimmich strikes as Bayern won 5-0 to give Russian newcomers Rostov a harsh introduction.

Article top media content

Article body.

Bayern München produced a five-star display to dispatch group stage debutants FC Rostov, setting a new UEFA Champions League record with a 13th successive home win.

  • Barcelona and Bayern begin in style
  • Also in Group D: PSV 0-1 Atlético

Rostov did not help their own cause by giving away two soft goals in the first half, the first a Robert Lewandowski penalty and the second on the stroke of half-time to Thomas Müller, on his 27th birthday.

Bayern had hardly broken sweat in the first 45 minutes, but began to press harder in the second. The impressive Joshua Kimmich scored twice in quick succession before Juan Bernat added a fifth in stoppage time.

Key Player: Joshua Kimmich (Bayern) When Ancelotti announced that Joshua Kimmich would be in the starting XI, many assumed he would replace Philipp Lahm at right-back. Instead, the Italian put him in the heart of his midfield and the 21-year-old didn't disappoint. Not disheartened by two failed attempts on goal in the first half, the Bayern youngster continued to push forward to exploit the space afforded him and was rewarded with his first UEFA Champions League goals.

Bayern celebrate their victory

Bayern's depth Being able to rest key players like Philipp Lahm, Franck Ribéry and Xabi Alonso for a UEFA Champions League match is not a luxury many teams enjoy, but Bayern have quality in abundance. Kimmich has clearly given Carlo Ancelotti something to think about, while the Italian still has to fit Jérôme Boateng into a defence that is yet to concede this season. Kingsley Coman and Arjen Robben are also yet to return to bolster an already devastating attack.

Rostov's rude awakening Rostov discovered just how big the gulf in class is in the UEFA Champions League, as they were outplayed in Munich. Naivety as much as anything cost the Russian side as they gave away an unnecessary penalty, which was converted by the prolific Robert Lewandowski, but the sucker punch was to come on the stroke of half time when poor defending presented Thomas Müller with a simple finish to effectively end the contest.

UEFA.com team reporters' views

Jordan Maciel, Bayern ( @UEFAcomJordanM ) A good start to the campaign for Bayern, who never really had to get out of first gear. Rostov gave a good account of themselves in the first half and will rue conceding the opener from a penalty and then again so close to half-time. Ancelotti will have no complaints as his side claimed all three points and a healthy goal difference ahead of another meeting with Atlético.

Richard van Poortvliet, Rostov ( @UEFAcomRichVP ) Rostov offered little in attack, which is understandable given the size of the task of playing against one of the best sides in Europe. However, it's imperative the side from the south of Russia become more streetwise in their remaining games if they are to have any hope of qualifying.

Match reaction

Carlo Ancelotti, Bayern coach It was a good start to our Champions League campaign. It was difficult to score early on, we didn't have many chances. We got there. At the moment the team is in good condition, both physically and mentally.

Ivan Danilyants, Rostov coach We have never played against a team that played like Bayern today. We tried hard to hold them off and stay organised then the first goal came from an unfortunate penalty. The rest from quick counters. This side is different to the one under Pep Guardiola: they are much more direct.
