Restaurant Customer Journey Map: What Is It and Why Is It Important?
- April 5, 2022
As a restaurant owner, you know that customer satisfaction is key to success. You may also be familiar with the concept of a customer journey map. But what is it, exactly? And why is it so crucial for restaurants? In this blog post, we will answer those questions and more! We’ll discuss a customer journey map, some tips for creating one, and how it can help your business.
Customer Journey Map
As mentioned in Forbes , a customer journey map visualizes the customer’s experience with your business. It can help you to identify pain points and areas where you could improve the customer experience. The journey map can be as simple or complex as you want it to be, but it should include at least the following:
- The beginning and end of the customer’s journey.
- The steps the customer takes to complete the journey.
- What emotions the customer feels at each stage.
- What motivates the customer at each stage.
Developing A Customer Journey Map
Creating a customer journey map is a great way to get insights that you can use to improve your business. For example, suppose you see that many customers get frustrated at a certain point in the journey. In that case, you can work to fix that issue. Or, if you see that customers are motivated by different things at different steps, you can adjust your marketing strategy accordingly.
- Start by gathering data. This data can include customer feedback, surveys, data from social media, and more.
- Create a timeline of the customer’s journey.
- Map out the steps the customer takes to complete the journey.
- Identify the emotions the customer experiences at each step.
- Understand what motivates the customer at each step.
Helps Improve Your Business
Once you have your customer journey map created, you can use it to improve your business. Keep in mind that it is a living document, and you should update it as needed. In short, a customer journey map can help you improve your business in many ways. Here are a few examples:
- Identify pain points and areas where you could improve the customer experience.
- Understand what motivates your customers at each step of the journey.
- Adjust your marketing strategy accordingly.
- Improve your customer service.
- Create a more effective website and app.
Final Thoughts
Consequently, there are many benefits to creating a customer journey map for your restaurant. First, customer journeys are an excellent way to get into the mindset of your customers. Second, they can help you identify what they want, where they’re going, and how much time it takes them on average before deciding if a purchase was worth their while. Finally, the more knowledge you have about what customers will experience when they walk through those doors, the better chance that their visit lasts and turns into something regular!

I had dinner inside a ‘volcano’ at this new immersive restaurant and bar
This new spot near Madison Square Park brings theatricality to your dinner plate.
On Monday, my dinner table began smoking and my dish emerged from a glass cover filled with even more smoke. The room glowed with the amber-red hue of lava and the sound of crackling fire filled the space.
I was at Journey , a new restaurant, bar and lounge that is bringing “theatrical gastronomy” to New York City with immersive video installations paired with fine dining and mixology.
On its surface, it may sound like a gimmick, but a deeper dive—actually experiencing it—yields a fun night out with actually good drinks and food.
RECOMMENDED: You must solve a cipher to enter this speakeasy-styled restaurant and bar
Journey, which had a soft opening this week at its Madison Square Park location at 27 West 24th Street, is a celebration of travel and the connections we make with people on our…well, journeys.
The playfully-decorated space shows off a massive collection of globes from thrift shops and antique stores, 3D sculptures of the world’s most famous landmarks and buildings above its bar, a display of replica antiquities, and a wall of moving classical art a-la Harry Potter.
Each area within the space—the bar, the salon, and the café—has a theatrical element.
At the bar, the cocktails you order (Legends of the Fall, Bloody Sunset, Apocalypto and Adordable Ruby) have accompanying comedic skits via augmented reality projected right in front of you on the bar top, including whiskey professor Ben Vereen.
In the “Epic Café,” where you can order a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dishware has hidden 3D designs that you can unlock through an app on your phone.
In the beautiful and boothed Salon, which contains the collection of replica antiquities, projections bring sculptures to life and a hostess bedecked in stunning “FashionTech” couture tells you the stories behind them, adding a layer of live performance to your experience.
The bar, Salon and Epic Café each have their own menus from chef Edward Hong.
Two additional experiences are available at Journey: Journey Odyssey and Journey 360.
Opening on Friday, the 50-seat, ticketed experience Journey Odyssey creates a multisensory dinner experience at tables for two and four. Some of Broadway’s most talented performers— Cady Huffman and Judy Kaye —have filmed a series of amusing vignettes that introduce each of the five courses, which hail from different locales: an appetizer in Tokyo, the first course in Venice, and the entrée in Buenos Aires.
Perhaps the most impressive and immersive of all the experiences at Journey is Journey 360, which is where the firey table inside a volcano exists.
The ticketed culinary adventure, which fits 20 people at a time around a long, communal table, features 360 projection mapping that transports diners to four different locations across the world.
On Monday, I did the 360 experience and was whisked away (on a virtual airship named Celestine) from the top of the Empire State Building to the Amazonian rainforest to the artic, from a shipwreck under the sea to the inside of a volcano and finally to outer space. Throughout the entire five-course prix-fixe meal, the visuals and soundscape surrounding us were entertaining and were made even more exciting by an actor wearing a techie dress who led us through the trip.
Each dish corresponded to a setting—Amazonian greens (a salad made with Yuca, tocacho, hearts of palm, Cupaucu vinaigrette) in the rainforest; gin-cured arctic salmon (with cucumber, horseradish, apple and dill) at the Artic; black cod (with miyoga, bok choy and yuzu dashi glaze) under the sea; braised veal cheek (with forbidden rice risotto, harissa and marscapone); and raspberry mousse with chocolate gelato (almond texture, cardamom foam and Grand Marnier) in space.
While in the volcano, waiters placed dry ice on the table to make it smoke, then they brought out the veal, covered with glass domes. In one synchronous movement, the waiters lifted the domes and vapor poured out across the dish and our place settings. It was the crescendo, the high point, of the entire meal and it was indeed theatrical.
And yes, the visuals were fun, but the best part of the whole experience was seeing this all unfold with the people (strangers) around me. I ended up grabbing cocktails with a couple sitting across the way afterward in the salon, which is not a typical thing for me to do.
If you want to take your own journey in the middle of midtown, tickets for the shows Journey 360 and Journey Odyssey ($175pp) are available on the Tock app and at exploretock.com . Reservations for the Café or the Salon can be made through Open Table.

From Mexico to Philadelphia: Cantina La Martina Is a Journey of Flavor
Chef Dionicio Jiménez tells his story through camaron suizas and red pozole with ramen noodles.

I don’t know where to start but with the thing that everyone talks about: Cantina La Martina exists in a piece of Philly hit hard by the opioid epidemic. It’s on the corner of Kensington and D, and there’s just no way around that. There are needles in the gutter, the scars of campfires on the sidewalks, some of the city’s most abandoned on the same block. It’s hard to look at, and it should be, because ignoring it helps precisely no one.
But then there’s the other thing everyone talks about: that Dionicio Jiménez has created something here that is remarkable — one of the best restaurants in the city in one of the most challenging places it could be. Calling Cantina La Martina an oasis is insulting, because it’s fully part of this neighborhood — with its Mexican music and weekend events on the fenced patio, killer happy-hour deals and Taco Tuesdays. In Cantina’s first year, Jiménez was a James Beard Award finalist for Best Chef Mid-Atlantic. Now, in its second year, he’s received another nod from the foundation, this time for the national honor of Outstanding Chef. And that all makes sense, because everything he makes in this kitchen – everything he touches – becomes the best version of that dish you’ll ever try.
Diners enjoying bites over margaritas
The camaron suizas–the shrimp curl like pink corkscrews inside the loosely rolled tortillas, topped with pickled red onions, doodles of Mexican crema, melted queso fresco, and, most importantly, this amazing creamy-white salsa verde flooding the plate and holding everything together. It turns the fluffy white rice served in a bowl on the side (half a bowl, really) into a star all on its own, the smoky black beans (in the other half of the bowl) into a garnish, and the entire dish into something that makes you put your elbows down on the table and focus — that makes you scrape the plate with your fork to get every last drop.
AT A GLANCE
Cantina La Martina 2800 D Street, Kensington
CUISINE: Mexican
Order This: Enchiladas suizas for lunch; shrimp tacos and the siete mares for dinner.
The rest of the menu is just as good. Every plate shows the steps Jiménez has taken over decades in the business — as a dishwasher, a line cook, Vetri’s sous-chef, Solomonov’s opening chef at Xochitl, Starr’s exec at El Rey — and what he has learned along the way.
Who else is going to attempt a Mex-Italian fusion like Jiménez’s siete mares riff on the traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes (done as a soup), or his food-nerdy red pozole, studded with chunks of tender pork and hominy and lime and jalapeño and threaded with ramen noodles? It was actually the ramen that got me into Jiménez’s dining room the first time, months ago, because I thought something like that has no safety net. It either has to be laughably bad or so good that it colors the entire menu — offering depth and a sense of humor bordering on whimsy.
Needless to say, it was the latter.
The kitchen’s tacos are monsters — street tacos given center-plate status, overstuffed and tightrope-walking that narrow line between upscaled and overcomplicated. All of them are good. The camarones (again) and the cochinita are great — the shrimp because they’re plainly influenced by that beach-bum vibe so many city taquerias reach for and miss, and the cochinita because that’s where Jiménez and his kitchen get to show off.
Noodles at Cantina La Martina
There’s an achiote braise that turns everything orange, a slow cook for an almost impossible tenderness, hints of chili and lime and black pepper, pickled red onions for a little acid brightness, cabbage for crunch (I always pull that off), and then the house’s pulpy, electric green salsa cruda that tastes like no other salsa cruda I’ve ever had, like spicy garlic, kinda; like hot tomatillo with a savory top note. That’s good times, right there. That’s a dish you talk about.
But two years in, and there’s still the conversation: Why this neighborhood? Is it really worth going?
And the answer is yes, obviously. Yes, if you’re comfortable enough. You walk in out of the tragedy and into the vibrant barroom, with its brick-backed long bar and exposed beams. The El rattles the walls, the radio plays MGMT’s “Time to Pretend,” and you can sink into the easy comfort and infectious joy of this room and forget everything else.
Cantina La Martina’s dining room
You shouldn’t, but you can. For a little while, anyway. But the world is still waiting outside. And while it’s beyond asking one restaurant to fix a problem as entrenched and multi-faceted as what exists outside the front doors, in a community that has had so much taken away from it, Cantina La Martina is giving a lot back.
They’re here. They’re part of the neighborhood. And they’re not looking away. 4 Stars — Come from anywhere in America

Port Orange finally has a KBBQ at Hanwoo in the old Mellow Mushroom on Taylor Road. They're still in a bit of a soft opening phase but let me tell you that did not reflect in the service which was spot on. The only tell is that they were out of some items - corn dog, chicken wings, marinated roast beef, bean sprouts. Hopefully they'll work out sourcing issues soon. I eat a lot of KBBQ down in Orlando and this is a great entry level place if you've never tried it before. The seasoning is toned down so nothings overly spicy or strongly flavored. There are plenty of "recognizable" meat options and things like butter garlic shrimp and chicken teriyaki for less adventurous eaters. I guess my point is it's good, but it's safe good. I'll give them huge props for absolutely tender and flavorful lamb and gator - two meats I've never seen at a KBBQ before. But the kimchi and gochujang were mild. Chopsticks and dipping sauces are upon request. While the banchan are unlimited they come in tiny single-serve dishes which says to me they're afraid of waste because people might not like them (the table behind us was adamantly against even trying kimchi). The place underwent an amazing transformation and it's clean, modern, and trendy/romantic without feeling pretentious or stuffy. Despite a hot grill at your table the temperature was very comfortable. Also gotta love a front desk that's a giant bull sculpture. I do hope they'll embrace the K of KBBQ a bit more as time goes on but I'll definitely be back because it was all quality ingredients and great staff. Also I absolutely adore the cow serving boards!

My husband and I just went to Hanwoo for opening day (at my husband's insistence). And oh my goodness, was it delicious! We have been to several different AYCE Korean BBQ places in the past, and this one definitely has some of the best quality of meat. The filet was extremely tender, and the New York strips was delicious. The beef bulgogi had great flavor and was also very tender. As soon as I bit into the corn dog, there was an awesome cheese pull. The cheese was sweet, and the hot dog was yummy. The hot dog itself was made of fish, but it did not taste fishy at all. The corn cheese had the same kind of cheese, so I was very happy I also tried the beef kimbap, which was filling but filled with fresh and pickled veggies. It made for a good bite, especially dipped in sauce. My husband had the chicken gyoza, and he liked it a lot too. The unlimited sides were awesome! My favorites were the radish, potato and egg salad, and spicy cucumber. Finally, for drinks, I got the Hanwoo Delight while my husband got the Mellow "Mango" (they did not have mango yet, so they replaced it with peach flavor). the fruity drink was our favorite! The yogurt one, I found, grew stronger with yogurt flavor as you drink it with your meal. All in all, very happy and will definitely be returning!

Hanwoo Korean BBQ for the Win Service, atmosphere, cost, food and beverages were all excellent! We are very happy that this restaurant has opened so close to home. We are a bit of food snobs and are generally very picky especially since eating out seems like a luxury anymore. It's hard to find a local place that hits all the marks. Fresh, delicious with a flare! Run don't walk and go see for yourself Very happy Customers. Shout out to Stephen our server! We also spoke to the lovely owner who seems to have her head on a swivel making sure everyone was happy and taken care of. Even if you don't normally eat this type of cuisine you will be pleasantly surprised!
Some of the BEST Korean BBQ I've ever had. Huge portions and everything is obviously made in house. Five stars.
I use to live in South Korea for 2years .It's not a real Korean restaurant! Bartender doesn't know what is Chamisul soju server doesn't know what Gochujang is ! During the lunch we were asking for additional rice and extra portion of bulgogi meat and spicy cucumbers in 15 minutes he came back and asking again if we need anything like he was never asked Customers not allowed to manage the fire while cooking by that all the meat got burned! Pork belly was skin ON which is not supposed to be! Anything you asking takes 15 min to get it As for the mushrooms, I thought that they were waiting until they grew to bring them to me. Very slow! It wasn't busy like less than half of place it was Saturday afternoon The food is regular cookie cutter.. Be careful with their lettuce seems they not washed them at all as you can see on the photo. And lots of other unpleasant details that I've noticed. I feel nauseous now.. Be informed and good luck!

‘I’m one of the lucky ones’: Veteran on 2,000-mile journey for mental health awareness
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Chief Petty Officer Robert Luna (Ret) is raising mental health awareness one step at a time.
Luna’s 28 years of military experience have given him firsthand experience in maneuvering the intense emotions that come with trauma. He tells News 19 he was blessed to overcome a mental health episode but knows everyone who leaves the military isn’t as fortunate.
“I’m one of the lucky ones that can get through this episode,” Luna said. “But I’m not the type of person where I can just sit back and just thank God that I was able to get through it.”
Now, Luna is on a new mission; walking across the country for mental health awareness.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, fewer than 50% of returning veterans in need receive any mental health treatment.
“I have made it my personal mission to bring mental health awareness to the forefront of Alabama and to the military in general after we get out. They just don’t talk about that enough,” Luna said.
On May 18, he’ll take his first steps out of Weaver, Alabama and head out on a near 2,200-mile walk to Los Angeles, California. With the help of sponsors, Luna will carry the essentials like water, walking gear, first-aid, and a solar panel battery for electronics – but, the most important tools he’s packing are useful tips about how those struggling can overcome a mental health episode.
Luna is excited to meet new people and spread the word along the way.
“Come and walk with me and we’ll talk, we’ll cry, we’re going to hug, we’re going to meet new people,” he explained. “And we’re going to explore our feelings, and then I’m going to be able to give you some tools that my sponsors are giving me to use to help you move along and create a healthier environment.”
That healthier environment, Luna says, is needed for more than military veterans. First responders are also faced with traumatic events every day and don’t always have an outlet to talk about it.
Luna says the key to helping someone overcome a mental health episode is listening.
“If we provide an environment of acceptance and no judgment, I feel like people especially in the men category are going to be more willing to express their feelings throughout the day,” he stated.
With a goal in mind to walk 20-25 miles each day, Luna expects his walk to Los Angeles to take about 5 months. His first stint across the Yellowhammer State will bring him through Muscle Shoals. He’ll stop at local stations for first responders and VA assistance to be a “beacon of light” for mental health.
“I want to hit them all and just be a beacon of hope or light for mental to say it can get better, it will get better, we just have to work on it,” Luna says.
