Then look no further, this list is full of my favorite fun weekend getaways in Michigan. I was born and raised in the Midwest, and Michigan is one of my favorite Midwestern states to visit.

Michigan has more shoreline than any other state except Alaska which means a lot of beaches. Add to that incredible scenery, amazing architecture, small towns and big cities, there is so much to do, see and visit in this Great Lakes State.

With that in mind, I came up with this list of the 15 best weekend getaways in Michigan!

Sleeping Bear Dunes For Outdoor Adventure

If you are looking for a weekend full of outdoor adventures, then consider heading out to Sleeping Bear Dunes.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a national Lakeshore in Michigan, and one of the best beaches in Michigan .

The beach is miles of white sandy dunes and beautiful views of Lake Michigan.

While exploring, you’ll find miles of hiking trails, a historic Lighthouse and Life Saving Station, and an adorable coastal village.

There is also a Visitors Center that you should check out if you want to learn a little more history about the area.

Depending on what time of year you go, along with hiking, you can also enjoy plenty of watersports.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is a great weekend getaway in Michigan if you want to reconnect with the great outdoors.

New Buffalo The Popular Resort Town

New Buffalo is a popular resort town in Michigan that is part of the vacation district known as ‘Harbor Country’.

This charming beach town is nestled on the shores of the majestic Lake Michigan.

If you are looking for a small coastal town to explore, you’ll find there are tons of things to do in New Buffalo .

The town has a casino, a beach park, plenty of unique shops, and more.

If you are interested in sailing, New Buffalo offers sailing tours as well as sailing lessons.

The ‘Big Red Lighthouse’ was built and rebuilt several times and has architectural nods to the country of Holland.

In 1956 the US Coast Guard painted it bright red and catapulted it into becoming one of the most iconic lighthouses in Michigan.

Visitors love spending the weekend in Holland exploring the Bavarian-style village shops and center, and of course, seeing ‘Big Red’.

Holland also hosts a yearly Tulip Festival, which makes for a really fun weekend getaway in Michigan.

The island itself is completely secluded and only hosts visitors to the National Park.

While there you can do a number of things.

If you are staying the whole weekend, you can plan a backpacking trip around the island and have some fun camping.

For those who want to explore for a few days, but not necessarily camp, you can find plenty of hotels in Houghton or Copper Harbor.

However, I suggest staying on Isle Royale the whole weekend as the ferry ride from Michigan can take 3 1/2 – 6 hours.

It is definitely worth it to spend the weekend camping.

Visitors to the National Park can also enjoy watersports, guided hikes, and there is a Visitor’s Center.

If you are looking for a rugged adventure weekend, you can’t go wrong exploring Isle Royale National Park.

Mackinac Island Is A Perfect Romantic Getaway

If you are looking for a romantic weekend getaway in Michigan, then look no further.

Mackinac Island is the perfect place for you and your partner to enjoy a weekend together.

The small island is located in Lake Huron and is one of Michigan’s most popular vacation spots.

Mackinac Island is a charming coastal town that is incredibly unique, for several reasons.

The entire island is a National Historic Area and you’ll find plenty of places to tour if you love history.

If you enjoy science, Ann Arbor has a fantastic Museum of Natural History, as well as a stunning botanical garden, and a Museum of Archeology.

You’ll also find a great selection of breweries, distilleries, and restaurants to sample.

If you are bringing your whole family on your weekend getaway, then the kids will love spending the morning at the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum.

After a morning spent there, grab a picnic lunch, and then hang out at Gallup Park or the Hudson Mills Metropark.

Packing List For Your Michigan Weekend Getaways

Hydration is so important. You want to remain hydrated to support your immune system which in turn will be stronger to fight off any germs you will encounter during your travels. 

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

One more point, there’s really nothing in Lansing except the uninspiring capital and MSU. Ann Arbor has much more to offer. It is a melting pot of cultures offering art, food, sightseeing and adventure.

Michigan just may be the best-kept secret for U.S. travel destinations.

My husband grew up in Michigan and all of my in-laws still live there. The first few times my husband took me there after we started dating I was blown away by the beauty and the sheer number of things to do in Michigan!

Now, I love it there, too, and so am excited to share with you my top eight recommendations for where to spend a weekend getaway in Michigan.

Known for its great fishing spots, snowy winters, Great Lakes (adjacent to four of them), and impact on the auto industry, Michigan is an ideal destination for those interested in winter sports and summer festivals or lazy lake days. No matter when you choose to visit, a weekend in Michigan is bound to be memorable.

While most people think of Detroit when they think of Michigan, there are so many other places worth visiting here. Take a weekend trip to one of these destinations. Even if you only have a weekend to spend in Michigan, you’ll get to see plenty of what this state has to offer.

Traverse City

A weekend in Traverse City should include stops at its many museums. From a collection of Inuit art at the Dennos Museum Center to the hands-on Great Lakes Children’s Museum, you’re bound to find something that intrigues you and your travel buddies here.

This Michigan trip destination is also known for its cherries, so stop by the Cherry Republic of Traverse City for a wide array of locally-sourced products.

While in Traverse City, you’re also a relatively short drive (about 40 minutes) from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakefront, which borders Lake Superior and has incredible views and hiking trails. Plus, it provides lots of fun for playing and sliding on the dunes.

The best time to visit Traverse City is during the summer, which coincides with the cherry-picking season. If you’ll be in town around the Fourth of July, plan your getaway around the National Cherry Festival . After all, who can say no to a weekend filled with fireworks and delicious food?!

Grand Rapids

Like Traverse City, Grand Rapids is a great place to visit with kids. It has a children’s museum (Grand Rapids Children’s Museum) and a zoo (John Ball Zoo).

For adult fun, you can go brewery hopping in “Beer City USA,” a title Grand Rapids has earned for its large number of taprooms.

Grand Rapids has its own international airport, making it easy to coordinate travel for your weekend trip. Fly into Gerald R. Ford International Airport or take an Amtrak train downtown.

This popular Michigan getaway is known for its cultural attractions. Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan and has a distinct college-town vibe while also incorporating its own flair separate from the university thanks to good eats and historic architecture.

You can catch musical events and art exhibitions year-round through A2SF , and if you visit Ann Arbor in June, you’ll be in town for their annual festival. For food, you can’t miss trying one of Zingermann’s famous subs (expect to wait in line!).

Ann Arbor is close to Detroit Wayne County Airport, so you won’t need to drive far after landing. While this is a fun place to visit any time of year, you’ll likely find the most to do during the summer.

Ann Arbor is also just a half hour away from Hell, another fun tourist destination. Playing off of its attention-grabbing name, this small town is home to the aptly named Hell Hole Diner and a gift shop called Screams (which also serves up some delicious ice cream). Whether your trip to Ann Arbor is during the spooky season or when Hell freezes over in the winter months, be sure to add room on your trip itinerary for this day trip destination.

Mackinac Island

Once a port used during the fur trade, Mackinac Island is now a car-free destination filled with nature and history. Much of this weekend getaway destination is considered a Michigan state park, so have your camera ready to capture the beauty of your surroundings.

A top thing to do during your trip to Mackinac Island is to visit Colonial Michilimackinac and the nearby fort to see living history interpreters and check out historical exhibits.

Also, don’t leave without sampling some of the famous fudge from Mackinac Island Fudge!

Since you can’t drive to Mackinac Island, you’ll need to take a ferry to get there. The ferry runs from April through October, and you can bring a pet or bicycle with you. While you can still visit Mackinac Island when the ferry isn’t running, the alternative is a 7-minute flight. Therefore, your best bet is to visit when the ferry is running to save money.

Harbor Springs

There’s always something fun happening in Harbor Springs, MI. If you’re visiting over the weekend, check out the local galleries and boutiques. From jewelry to glasswork, you’ll find all sorts of trinkets to bring home with you. Try to align your trip with an interesting event or festival – every month has something different to offer!

In winter, ski buffs will enjoy a weekend getaway to Harbor Springs since it has some of the best skiing in Michigan at Boyne Highlands Resort. (Not to be confused with Boyne Mountain Resort 40 minutes to the south in Boyne Falls – though that’s also a great place for skiing in Michigan!)

Harbor Springs is roughly a half hour away from Mackinac Island, so consider visiting both if you’re taking an extended weekend for your trip. Since the town hosts celebrations during each season, this is an ideal place to visit year-round.

If you’re looking for wineries in Michigan, look no further than Baroda, Michigan. Here, you’ll find Gravity Vineyards and Winery’s tasting room overlooking the lake, and Red Top Winery’s selection of wines and ciders. You can visit even more wineries in nearby Berrien Springs.

The best time to visit Baroda is during the summer when there isn’t much rain and the temperature is tolerable. You can get here by flying into South Bend International Airport in Indiana, about a half hour away. Alternatively, there are a couple of Amtrak stations nearby that you can take a train into.

Chateau Chantal

Another winery that is a destination all unto itself and makes for a great weekend getaway in Michigan is Chateau Chantal in Traverse City near the Old Mission Peninsula. This is a great spot for a romantic rendezvous or a girls’ trip. My sister-in-law and her friends often go here for their annual mom’s weekend away. And my husband proposed here…so yeah, we like this place. 😉

Chateau Chantal has sprawling grounds lined with vineyards that are adjacent to the impressive tasting room, a large space with plenty of room at the tasting room bar. But you might want to take your glass of Reisling or another varietal to the patio, which has an expansive view over the gorgeous vineyards.

Best of all for an easy, no-stress wine weekend away is that there is a B&B right on site where you can stay.

Frankenmuth

Also known as Little Bavaria, Frankenmuth is a cultural hotspot for all things German, located about 90 minutes north of Detroit. Festivals like Oktoberfest and Zehnder’s Snowfest are great reasons to visit Frankenmuth on their own. If you won’t be in town during the festival season, you can still get a taste of Germany on a tour of Frankenmuth Brewery.

If you’re traveling with kids, head to one of the two indoor water parks in town (Zehnder’s Splash Village and Bavarian Inn Lodge Waterpark and Family Fun Center, the latter of which is only open to overnight guests). So even if it’s cold outside, don’t forget to pack a bathing suit!

Frankenmuth is relatively close to Bishop International Airport, and there’s also an Amtrak station in nearby Saginaw. There’s quite a bit of activity here in the fall and winter, making these the perfect times to visit.

Think Detroit isn’t family-friendly? Think again. Many of the Motor City’s neighborhoods—including Corktown, Greektown and Mexicantown —are riding to a rebound, with foodie-approved restaurants featuring urban farm-to-table fare. In fact, the restaurant boom is partly responsible for the city’s renaissance.

Detroit has long been a fantastic and educational destination for families, though, considering it’s the birthplace of the automobile. You can tour the Ford Piquette Plant where Henry Ford invented the Model T, even stopping for a photo in an old car. For more history, head to The Detroit Historical Society, where you can walk what looks like the old streets of Detroit. Be sure to have coneys (hot dogs) while you’re in town, too—they’re a big deal in Detroit!

2. Mackinac Island

Traveling to Mackinac Island (pronounced MAK-uh-naw) is like traveling to the past. The Beach Guard site gives the public information on beach water quality across the state. It includes water sampling results and daily updates on which beaches are under advisories or have been closed. The data covers 1,244 public beaches and 574 private ones.

Chicago's eclectic neighborhoods, world-class attractions and lakeside setting can easily fill a travel itinerary. But when you've worn a path through the Windy City and are looking for a change of scenery, you'll find a bevy of destinations within a few hours, from Lake Michigan retreats to quaint towns. Sitting 80 miles northwest of Chicago, just across the Wisconsin border, Lake Geneva has long been a summer home haven for Chicago's elite, so much so that it was dubbed the "Newport of the West." Like its Rhode Island counterpart , Lake Geneva's shoreline is dotted with historic estates sure to impress history buffs. Today, visitors can find an abundance of activities year-round, from beaches and boating in the summer to skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. When you're not enjoying the great outdoors, treat yourself to some boutique shopping, indulge at a wine bar or brewery, or explore the grandeur of Yerkes Observatory.

The home of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, this city nearly 150 miles northwest of Chicago has plenty to do beyond its well-known campus. Surrounded by five lakes, Madison is an outdoor paradise, offering boat rentals, beaches, parks and an enchanting botanical garden. When the weather is warm, join coeds on the Memorial Union Terrace for a pitcher of beer, or head to the observation deck at the domed Wisconsin State Capitol building for a view of lakes Mendota and Monona. But the fun doesn’t end when the temperatures drop: Embrace Madison's notorious winter chill while ice fishing, biking on frozen lakes and attending unique festivals.

This small Michigan town may only be 70 miles east of Chicago, but with its slow pace and relaxed atmosphere, it feels worlds away. New Buffalo's location on Lake Michigan grants visitors access to 16 miles of shoreline, including 260-foot dunes at Warren Dunes State Park and an amenity-filled town beach. The town's proximity to wineries, farms and orchards along the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail adds to its allure, as do its chic boutiques and waterfront dining options.

A fraction of the size of Chicago, Milwaukee is ideal for escaping the Windy City's crowds while still enjoying exceptional cultural and culinary experiences. Plus, it's easily accessible via Amtrak train; the rail ride from Chicago to Milwaukee is just about 90 minutes. Start your day at the Milwaukee Art Museum, known as much for its sculptural design as it is for its exhibits, before touring the Pabst Mansion, built in 1892. Beyond legendary beer, cheese and bratwurst, all of which you can find at the Milwaukee Public Market, the city's thriving dining scene boasts restaurants helmed by James Beard Award winners.

One of Michigan's most popular beach towns, South Haven is a quintessential summer haunt for Midwesterners. Follow the shoreline of Lake Michigan just more than 120 miles east, and you'll arrive at this idyllic town bursting with bed-and-breakfast accommodations, seven public beaches and locally owned shops. Spend a carefree day basking in the sun, eating old-fashioned ice cream and kayaking on the lake. If you're not in a rush, stay for a sunset cruise before driving back to the city.

With its restored electric streetcars and original buildings (including the century-old soda fountain at Coopers Uptown), nostalgia-infused Kenosha warrants the 60-mile trip north. Perched on Lake Michigan's western shore, this Wisconsin city offers the outdoor pursuits of a beach town with a more robust itinerary. The lakefront is undoubtedly Kenosha's most defining attraction, complete with a sculpture walk, a bike trail and two historical lighthouses. But the city also features several accredited museums, such as the Kenosha Public Museum, and a host of entertainment options that make it worth a visit even in cooler months.

Those with kids in tow will want to pack up the car for a trip to the Wisconsin Dells. This town, known as the Waterpark Capital of the World, sits approximately 200 miles northwest of Chicago and is home to the largest concentration of indoor and outdoor water parks in the world. Prefer to stay dry? The Dells features scores of additional adventures for active families, ranging from feeding animals at the Wisconsin Deer Park to amphibious vehicle tours along the Wisconsin River.

For a Hallmark-esque escape, look no further than this tiny Illinois town roughly 160 miles northwest of Chicago. Galena's historic Main Street oozes charm with its well-preserved 19th-century buildings, which house ice cream parlors, candy shops, boutiques and antique stores. What's more, the rural roads surrounding this Mississippi River Valley locale are begging for a scenic drive to the region's wineries. If you're into history, save time for a Galena Trolley Tour, on which your guide will take you to the home of Ulysses S. Grant and regale you with stories about this mining town's past.

Trade Chicago's congested Lake Shore Drive for 15 miles of untouched shoreline with a quick day trip to Indiana Dunes National Park. In less than an hour (the dunes are located about 50 miles east of the city), you'll be digging your toes into the soft sand, splashing around in Lake Michigan's chilly water or working up a sweat on the park's 50-plus miles of trails. To really elevate your heartrate, hike up the 120-foot Mount Baldy dune on a ranger-led tour, or take it easy on the park's less challenging trails through forests and marshes.

Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry Co. stops trips out of St. Ignace indefinitely

The two main ferry services to Mackinac Island have halted certain trips out of St. Ignace during peak season.

The Star Line Mackinac Island Ferry Co. stopped running trips out of St. Ignace, in the Upper Pensinsula, indefinitely, according to a post Monday on the Saint Ignace Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page.

Star Line was allowing visitors to exchange already-purchased tickets at their St. Ignace office for the Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry instead, according to the post.

In addition, Shepler’s announced in a post on Thursday that it would only run direct trips to Mackinac Island out of St. Ignace and not run its narrated Mighty Mac journeys from the location “for the foreseeable future” citing “the high volume of guests during peak season.”

Official comment on the stoppage was not immediately available, however MLive reported a smaller fleet, with fewer fast options, had been conducting Mackinac Island trips this season after a Florida billionaire purchased Star Line this summer and found major mechanical work needed.

The same Florida billionaire, David Hoffman, already owned Shepler’s. A representative of his organization, the Hoffman Family of Companies, could not be immediately be reached for comment.

The Detroit Free Press was also told no comment would be made by a person who picked up the phone at Star Line, then directed to call Chris Shepler, of Shepler’s Ferry. That ferry outfit reported Shepler was out of town for a funeral Friday and would be the only one to comment.

It’s been a major summer of change for the Mackinac Island fleet and the Shepler family.

The Shepler family saw the loss of a patriarch last month when co-founder and Captain of Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry Bill Shepler died.

Star Line still showed an available schedule online for ferries out of its Mackinaw City location on Friday.

Tim Hygh, executive director for the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau, also spoke to Shepler's continued work in an emailed statement Friday,

“Shepler’s Ferry is committed to ensuring our guests get to and from the island and are doing so in an efficient manner this season," Hygh said. "They have implemented changes including increasing the cadence of their departures to every 15-minutes during peak times and the guest lines are very similar to the volume we typically see this time of year.”

A successful family vacation needs to accomplish many goals at once. Whether you’re planning a quick spring or winter break getaway, a summer weekend escape, or just need an impromptu vacation, the chosen destination needs to satisfy each family member, young and old. The United States is full of superb, something-for-everyone weekend getaways from the South to the East and West coasts, with some Midwest highlights in between. These choices span cities, islands, mountains, and lakes. Everyone’s demands met.

1. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Best for : Stepping back in time and unplugging

Visiting this island and National Historic Landmark at the gateway to Michigan’s showstopping Upper Peninsula is a bit like time travel. Not only are there no cars allowed, but there are also centuries-old forts, notable Victorian architecture, and horse-drawn carriages, which you’ll see all around the island and especially on Main Street. That central drag is also home to some of the best and oldest fudge shops in the country, a grocery market born in 1884, galleries depicting the Mackinac’s famous lilacs, and toy stores selling kites and other nondigital amusements. Nature is big: Hiking and biking trails abound, and next to the iconic Arch Rock is the newly opened Milliken Nature Center . One of America’s oldest hotels, the Grand Hotel , begs visitors to sit on the world’s longest porch, have afternoon tea, play a round of mini golf, or barrel down the dirt bike track.

Soaks in the Warm Springs Pools are priced at $30 per person for a 50-minute session on weekdays and $35 on weekends and holidays.

2. Bath County, Virginia

Best for : Family wellness and a dose of presidential history

About four hours from Washington, D.C., Bath County has an abundance of healing mineral springs that have attracted Native Americans, doctors, and presidents, and it’s a great place for the whole family to immerse themselves in—literally. Start at the historic Warm Springs Pools , which date to 1761 and were a favorite of presidents like Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. The Ladies’ and Gentleman’s Bathhouses, which last year underwent a $4 million rehabilitation to preserve and restore them, are octagon-shaped wooden buildings surrounding two warm pools, and both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register.

There’s a daily dedicated co-ed family hour (pool noodles included) that needs to be booked in advance. The charming town of Hot Springs is a few miles down the road. There you can visit Sam Snead Tavern, named for the legendary golfer who got his start on the adjacent courses, and the Duck In Deli & Market for coffee and milkshakes. Other attractions include the Garth Newel Music Center concert hall, more than 160 miles of hiking trails, and Falling Spring Falls, a breathtaking 80-foot waterfall that Thomas Jefferson once visited.

Whether you stay overnight or not, the Omni Homestead Resort , which has been welcoming travelers since 1766, is worth a visit. Set on 2,300-acres, the resort boasts a turn-of-the-century movie theater, 10 bars and restaurants, an expansive hot spring spa, and several natural hot springs. Activities include skiing and tubing in winter and horseback riding, falconry, fly fishing, and mountain biking in summer.

3. Lake Oconee, Georgia

Best for : Family lake life

While beaches will always be popular with families, lakes are a wonderful destination for all ages. The nearly-20,000-acre Lake Oconee in central Georgia is about 90 minutes from Atlanta, a perfect weekend escape. The lake offers activities from boating to swimming, jet-skiing, and paddleboarding. Out of the water, the 100-acre- Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds has endeavors for most ages, including a sporting clays instructional games area and archery range.

There are also seven championship golf courses , some designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Bob Cupp, and hiking trails surrounding the lake that traverse wetlands, forest, meadows, and archaeological sites . On rainy or cold days, head to historic downtown Greensboro and visit the Greene County African American Museum , which details the lives and history of the county’s African American population, and then shop for souvenirs at Genuine Georgia and the Ripe Thing Market , which sells prepared foods like jams and chocolate and handmade crafts, all by locals. If you don’t do a vacation home rental, the hotel to stay at is the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee resort, which has a kids club, scenic lakefront, new spa, and an arcade and game room.

The Catskills are easily accessible from both the New York and New Jersey metro areas.

4. The Catskills, New York

Best for : Family adventures from skiing to water parks

The Catskill Mountains just north of New York City are a large region filled with adventure opportunities. Winter brings skiing at resorts like Hunter Mountain , Windham Mountain Club , and Belleayre Mountain , which is perfect for beginners. Water parks are a thing here no matter the season, with numerous options offering watery fun all year long. Try Kartrite for indoors and Zoom Flume for outdoors. When the weather is warm, take advantage of the lovely surroundings, which include hikes of all skill levels with plenty of waterfalls, high peaks, and wildlife to ogle.

When it’s time to a refuel, head to one of the many cute towns nearby, like Livingston Manor, Saugerties, Callicoon, Catskill, or Woodstock; all have charming Main Streets filled with boutiques, cafés, and ice cream shops (in Saugerties, try Alleyway , in Callicoon there’s Ollie Grey’s , and Cone-E Island is in Catskill). Larger cities like Hudson and Kingston have even more shops and restaurants and are also worth a visit. Consider staying at Mohonk Mountain House , an all-inclusive resort set along a private lake, with activities ranging from snowshoeing, tubing, and ice-skating in winter and biking, boating, and horseback riding in summer.

Indianapolis’s White River State Park is a large expanse of green space in the city, complete with a zoo, IMAX theater, and the Indiana State Museum.

5. Indianapolis, Indiana

Best for : Affordable family fun

This Midwestern city is a great place to visit with kids without breaking the bank—even the flights here are comparatively cheap. Indy boasts the world’s largest children’s museum , which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025 and has exhibits ranging from dinosaurs to space. Several pro sports teams make their home here, plus there’s the famous Indy 500 and its Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum , which reopens next year after an $89 million renovation as an immersive and high-tech experience. Newfields houses the Indianapolis Museum of Art, various formal gardens, the historic Lilly House, a seasonal outdoor beer garden, and the Virginia Fairbanks Art and Nature Park, 100 acres of woodlands dotted with large-scale quirky art installations like Funky Bones , a massive cartoon skeleton in the ground that kids can climb all over.

Another must visit is sprawling White River State Park , which is home to the Indianapolis Zoo; Eiteljorg Museum of Native American and Western Indian Art; Indiana State Museum, with the state’s largest IMAX screen; the NCAA Hall of Champions; and a concert stage. Families can also rent paddleboats or reserve a ride on a Venetian gondola with a singing gondolier (yes, really). Stay at Bottleworks Hotel , which is inside the city’s old Coca-Cola bottling plant in a burgeoning district with a food hall and bowling alley and pinball arcade .

Park City is a year-round outdoor playground for children and adults alike.

6. Park City, Utah

Best for : Year-round active family adventures

Deer Valley in Park City is a paradise for skiers of all ages thanks to no snowboarders, a top-notch ski school and daycare , and pristine lodges and lifts. But Park City is also a summer hot spot, with hiking, biking, and horseback riding amid stunning mountain back drops. Summer also brings lots of outdoor concerts, with musicians playing rock and country, and barbecues , plus a variety of adventure day camps for kids from infants to age 12 that will keep them busy with activities like sports, nature studies, scavenger hunts, and art.

Aside from skiing in winter, kids and parents will have fun snowmobiling, dog sledding , and snowshoeing , and the après scene here is legendary. Dine at family friendly restaurants like Sammy’s Bistro , Twisted Fern , and Five5eeds , or for a more upscale experience, the Glitretind at the Stein Erickson Lodge is a fine dining option with a decent menu for kids. Montage Deer Valley has an excellent kids club, plus a spa for parents to unwind, Daly’s Pub & Rec with darts, bowling, and arcade games, and a private snow tubing area in winter. Its partnership with Uppababy offers stroller and other gear loaners, lightening your packing load.

Kids will be fascinated by the Wright Brothers National Monument, which marks the first successful airplane flights in 1903.

7. Outer Banks, North Carolina

Best for : Wide beaches that aren’t overdeveloped

While many East Coast beaches are overcrowded with people and developments, the Outer Banks, a stretch of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, remain blissfully uncongested. They’re also home to some of the state’s best beaches, complete with impressive sand dunes, wild horses, and epic waves. If you have a big, extended family gathering, the vacation rentals in the area are larger and less expensive than those of most Northeast beach towns.

While there are ample options to select as your base, from Cape Hatteras to Duck to Nags Head, look to Kitty Hawk as the closest town to the Wright Memorial Bridge from the mainland. Aside from the beach, you can check out the Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve or climb to the top of the massive sand dunes at Jockey Ridge State Park—daring teens and grownups can also hang glide. The area is home to fascinating history. Learn about the Wright Brothers’ first flight at the Wright Brothers National Memorial and discover the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island through a live reenactment.

8. Las Vegas, Nevada

Best for : Thrill-seeking families who want to be entertained

Yes, Vegas is known as a playground for adults, but it’s also a prime spot for kids, thanks to creative activity parks, thrilling rides, and even wildlife. Start at the recently opened PopStroke Las Vegas , a tech-friendly mini golf center from Tiger Woods, complete with two 18-hole courses, a restaurant, playground, and ice cream parlor.

If it’s too hot to be outside, check out AREA15 , an indoor entertainment park filled with everything from virtual reality rides to laser mazes to live shows. And If your family likes thrill rides, go to the five-acre Adventuredome indoor theme park that houses 25 rides from roller coasters to carousels. To see the city from above, ride the High Roller observation wheel, and to brave four of the world’s highest thrill rides , head to the Strat Hotel. For a more old-school experience, the Pinball Hall of Fame has more than 200 vintage pinball machines on display, and it costs just 25 to 50 cents per game. Animal lovers shouldn’t miss the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat , a lush outdoor space that’s home to Chilean flamingos and other birds. For more animal adventures, the Lion Habitat Ranch has all kinds of rescued animals and the Shark Reef Aquarium houses more than 2,000 marine animals. Finally, if the family wants to see a show, Cirque du Soleil Mystique and Jabbawockeez are both appropriate for all ages.
