Few wine regions have the instant name recognition of Tuscany 's Chianti, first legally defined in 1716 (but recognized as a wine region as early as the 13th century). Some of Chianti's most acclaimed wines, however, don't carry its name. Only reds based on the Sangiovese grape can be called Chianti. Ambitious, rule-breaking Super-Tuscans, most often based on international grapes such as Cabernet, Merlot, and Syrah, carry the humbler IGT Toscana designation. The history of the noble Biondi Santi family is inextricably bound up with the Brunello wines of Montalcino — it was an ancestor of the current proprietor, Jacopo, who isolated its revered Sangiovese Grosso grape clone in the 19th century. This most famous of Montalcino estates comes down on the side of tradition, producing monumental, long-lived wines for collectors. As you will discover during free time, the town is known for its white truffles, including a record-breaking one that weighed well over four pounds. Your meal at Villa Dianella will be prepared with other locally sourced Tuscan ingredients. Although the menu changes to reflect the seasons, it may include a paccheri pasta with pecorino cheese and a wonderfully seasoned chicken dish with roasted vegetables. The tasting in the wine cellar will be just as memorable as the selections will be organic. You might sample a blend made with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and perhaps an Orpicchio white varietal.

Sting and Trudie Styler bought the Tenuta Il Palagio estate 27 years ago and since then have built themselves an impressive 10-strong range of wines, many of which play on the names of Sting’s musical repertoire. But by doing that do they run the risk of not being taken seriously as fine wines? Also, how does the estate operate and what’s their actual involvement? And, when Bono pops round for a bowl of pasta what comes out of the wine cellar? Peter Dean asked the couple all this and more before Sting headed out on the European leg of his latest 3.0 tour. As for the Tenuta Il Palagio wines, they start selling in the UK under a new deal with ZONIN1821, a wine business that is a near neighbour to them in Tuscany and will help the wines reach a wider audience in the UK, particularly in restaurants. Dean also reviews the latest releases.

With a career that has spanned so many different fields it was tempting to ask Sting and Trudie a bundle more questions that accurately reflects the different fields they influence. I decided then to split them into three areas: their Tuscan estate Il Palagio and the wines they make there; how these wines are influenced by Sting as an artist; and why they have got into bed with wine company ZONIN1821?

La Dolce Vita will offer eight scenic itineraries across the European nation. The all-inclusive roundtrips depart from Rome before journeying to desirable destinations, such as Venice, Matera, Tuscany, Piedmont, Portofino, Abruzzo, and Sicily. The new routes collectively cover over 9,941 miles of track, running through 14 regions and 131 cities.

Labeled “Italy’s first luxury train,” La Dolce Vita pairs old-world Italian glamour with the finest modern amenities. The sumptuous interior is an ode to the craftsmanship of the 1960s and ‘70s. The 12 carriages host no more than 62 passengers at a time, creating a truly intimate travel experience. Accommodation includes 12 deluxe cabins, 18 suites, and one, suitably flashy La Dolce Vita Suite.

The train has gourmands covered, too. Michelin three-star chef Heinz Beck will oversee all the cuisine onboard, while Vinitaly will carefully pick the wines for each journey. The respective menus will, of course, showcase the best Italy has to offer.
