Last week, Billboard revealed its year-end Boxscore charts , ranking the top tours, venues, and promoters of 2023. That coverage included analysis of the new wave of genre diverse artists crashing stadium stages, and in turn, our charts. This week, we are breaking down the year’s biggest tours, genre by genre . Today, we continue with rock.
Rock music has been at the center of the touring industry for decades, with legendary acts like The Rolling Stones , U2 , and the Eagles controlling stadium calendars and delivering record-breaking grosses. That is still the case, as rock is responsible for more entries in the all-genre top 10, 20, 40 and 100 than any other genre.
But at 32.4% of all top 100 tours’ grosses, rock takes a dramatic hit from last year’s 42.5% figure. Combined with pop, the two central genres have lost a third of their total market share since the pandemic, as pockets of Latin and K-pop acts take up prime Boxscore real estate. And as rock accounts for many of the oldest artists in the top 100, with Latin and K-pop bringing up the chart’s youngest names, the future of rock bands as touring titans is blurrier than it was 5-10 years ago.
But with a new round of legacy tours from ‘90s and ‘00s bands, plus steady arena grosses from 21st century acts like Arctic Monkeys, Greta Van Fleet and Imagine Dragons, there is still plenty of juice for the coming years.
Scroll to check out the top 10 highest-grossing tours by rock artists, with such acts qualifying due to recent performance on Billboard ’s Top Rock Albums and/or Hot Rock Songs charts. Rankings are determined according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore. All reported shows worldwide between Nov. 1, 2022 – Sept. 30, 2023 are eligible.
$76.8M / 597K tickets / 41 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 24
Phish is among the most consistent touring acts, regardless of genre. From its annual destination event in Mexico to its reliable runs of shows at Madison Square Garden, the jam-band legends continue to one-up themselves, after winding up at No. 31 on last year’s all-genre ranking.
Red Hot Chili Peppers
$77.2M / 657K tickets / 18 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 23
Red Hot Chili Peppers repeat in the year-end rock breakdown with shows in Asia, Europe and North America. Still, the band’s $77.2 million total doesn’t include the $48.2 million from its co-headline shows with Post Malone in Australia.
$92.7M / 1M tickets / 45 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 20
Muse makes its first appearance among the year-end top 10 rock tours since 2013, when the glam-rock band earned $43.2 million while on The 2nd Law World Tour. The European leg did the heaviest lifting, with nine of the top 10 grosses of the year.
$95.7M / 692K tickets / 45 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 19
Blink is back with the biggest tour of its career. The original trio of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker reunited for 45 sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Things came to a head with two nights at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium, where blink-182 grossed $8.8 million and sold 43,600 tickets.
Guns N' Roses
$96.2M / 888K tickets / 31 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 18
Guns N’ Roses logs a second year between $90-100 million after being No. 8 on 2022’s genre Boxscore breakout. More shows after the tracking period’s cutoff puts the rock icons on tap for the ’24 ranking with $19.7 million already in the bank.
Dead & Company
$114.7M / 845K tickets / 28 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 15
Dead & Company played its farewell tour between May 19 and July 16, yielding its first $100 million summer since launching as a touring unit in 2015. The peak was a three-night run at San Francisco’s Oracle Park to end the tour, earning $20.4 million from 118,000 tickets sold.
$125.8M / 1.2M tickets / 19 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: 14
Metallica grossed more than $10 million in seven markets between Europe and North America, doubling up in Montreal, Paris and more. The M72 World Tour continues with scheduled dates through Sept. 29, 2024.
Depeche Mode
$175.2M / 1.8M tickets / 47 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 9
The first of three rock acts in the all-genre top 10, Depeche Mode scores the biggest year of its touring career, blowing past 2017’s $123.5 million. Three shows at Mexico City’s Foro Sol on Sept. 21, 23 and 25 delivered the band’s biggest gross ever, at $15.4 million from 195,000 tickets sold.
$210M / 1.3M tickets / 65 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 7
Elton John notches a fifth year on the year-end Boxscore recap with the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, having topped the abridged 2020 report. After all was said and done, set a new record as the highest-grossing tour in Boxscore history, regardless of genre. Over 329 shows, the trek earned $939.1 million and sold six million tickets.
$342.5M / 3.2M tickets / 55 shows
All-Genre Top 100 Rank: No. 2
Switching places with John from last year, Coldplay takes top honors as the highest-grossing rock act of 2023. The band’s spread covers shows in North and South America, as well as Europe, with dates in Asia and Australia in the 2024 tracking window. After kicking off in 2022, the Music of the Spheres Tour has brought in $664.5 million and sold 6.7 million tickets.

Rock Dominates Over Half of Billboard’s New Top 10 Highest Grossing Tours of All Time
In Billboard Boxscore 's updated list of the top 10 highest grossing tours of all time, rock holds on strong and dominates over half the list, with two other active tours by young and veteran artists bookending the ranking.
Top Grossing Tours: No. 10 - No. 5
One of those active tours is English pop superstar Harry Styles ' Love On Tour, which has been ongoing since 2021, raking in an impressive $418 million so far, which is good enough to secure the No. 10 spot.
Appearing next at No. 9 is AC/DC 's Black Ice World Tour, which took place from 2008 to 2010. Across 107 shows attended by 2.8 million people, the run grossed $442 million. Pink Floyd bassist and co-singer Roger Waters occupies No. 8 as The Wall Live took in $459 million after playing to 4.1 million people at 219 total gigs.
Coldplay , who are rock to some and not to others (we'll let you decide for yourself), brought in $524 million on the A Head Full of Dreams Tour, which made 115 stops in front of 5.4 million fans. That landed them at No. 7 on the updated list.

Coming in at No. 6 and No. 5 are The Rolling Stones , who earned $547 million and $558 million on the No Filter Tour (2017-2019, 2021) and A Bigger Bang Tour (2005-2007), respectively. Comparatively, the more recent run was comprised of 58 shows for 2.9 million people and the mid-2000s jaunt was a more exhausting 111 shows for 3.5 million fans. It's safe to say the Stones earn quite a lot more per show these days!
Top Grossing Tours: No. 4 - No. 1
One of the most attention-grabbing tours of the last decade was certainly the Not In This Lifetime... tour, which featured the return of Slash and Duff McKagan to Guns N' Roses . After playing 158 shows to a whopping 5.4 million fans, GN'R netted $584 million, which places them at No. 4 on Billboard's list.
There's a significant gap in gross sales from the first seven tours on the list and the top three, leaping from GN'R's $584 million all the way up to $736 million for U2 's 2009 through 2011 U2 360° Tour. The band played 110 shows on that run and a staggering 7.3 million people showed up.
No. 2 is another younger artist, English sensation Ed Sheeran , whose 2017 through 2019 The Divide Tour found him playing 258 gigs in front of 8.9 million fans. And $776 million was earned.
Finally, the No. 1 spot is claimed by a world-renowned legend whose tour is still ongoing, meaning these figures are going to keep increasing. Sir Elton John 's Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour initially ran from 2018 through 2020, but was interrupted by the pandemic. He got back on the road last year and, so far, this tour has brought in $853 million. The living legend's tour has sold 5.5 million tickets across 293 shows.
Past Touring Stats
In addition to tracking those top grossing tours of all time, Billboard regularly tracks the highest grossing tours of each year. Last year, the list had a healthy amount of rock and metal acts, from Iron Maiden (No. 26) through The Rolling Stones (No. 6). Read more here and for 2021's year-end figures, head here .

10 Blockbuster Concert Tours That Dominated 2023
Table of contents, delving into 2023's top grossing tours .
In the realm of music entertainment, where melodies become anthems and stages transform into magical landscapes, 2023 witnessed a spectacle of epic proportions. As the year unfolded, music enthusiasts around the globe found themselves swept away by these blockbuster tours that captivated hearts and conquered box office records.
From stadiums to intimate arenas, the top 10 highest-grossing music tours of 2023 etched indelible marks on the world stage, leaving audiences awe-struck and craving more. In this blog, Hollywood Branded shares an exclusive backstage pass to the resounding success and show-stopping moments from the top 10 highest-grossing music tours of 2023 and celebrates the artists that dominated the charts and redefined live performances.
MUSIC ARTISTS BUILD ECONOMIES
In the realm of live performances, the concert stage has become a arena for the world's top musical acts to showcase their talents. As 2023 comes to a close, the industry is more than alive with the staggering financial success of some of the biggest names in music. Leading the charge is none other than Taylor Swift, whose Eras Tour has not only enthralled over 3 million fans but also grossed an astronomical $900 million, earning the pop sensation a cool $305 million.
The Financial Impact Beyond the Stage
The economic impact of these blockbuster tours extends far beyond the music itself. According to Morgan Stanley, Swift and Beyoncé, who earned $145 million from her Renaissance World Tour, collectively contributed a staggering $5.4 billion to the U.S. economy in the third quarter, which is larger than the GDP of 35 countries. As both stars have concert movies to go along with the tours, Beyonce's is still on the way, the financial windfall shows no signs of slowing down.
The Cost of the Grand Stage
However, the road to these record-breaking earnings is not without its challenges. The sheer magnitude of global tours involves a abundance of expenses, from a massive entourage of bandmates, backup singers, and dancers to the logistical intricacies of transforming stadiums into concert-ready venues. Even with Swift's average ticket price estimated at $253, the surge in costs post-pandemic, particularly in trucking and freight, poses a significant hurdle.
Not Every Dollar Goes into the Artist's Pocket
Contrary to popular belief, higher ticket prices don't necessarily translate to higher take-home pay for the artists. The complex web of expenses includes not only the artists' team but also venue rentals, managers, agents, promoters, and ticketing companies, each taking a share of the gross revenue. Taylor Swift's Eras Tour is set to earn a record-breaking $1 billion in sales—here are the 10 highest-grossing tours
Taylor Swift is already one of the highest-paid entertainers in the world , but now it looks like her Eras Tour could be the highest-grossing tour of all time, earning a record-setting $1 billion in sales.
Swift's stadium concert tour — which features sprawling 40-song sets with elaborate staging, choreography and over a dozen costume changes — is expected to eclipse Elton John's farewell tour in terms of gross revenue for tickets, merchandise and sponsorships, as reported by the Wall Street Journal .
Exactly how much Swift's tour has earned is unclear, as it hasn't been reporting nightly grosses to Billboard Boxscore, which tracks concert tour data.
Last December, Billboard estimated that Swift's tour would gross $590 million based on 52 tour dates. But with recently added concerts in Latin America, Asia, Australia and Europe through 2024, the tour has a total of at least 106 dates, for now.
This suggests that over $1 billion in total gross revenue is likely. With the added dates, another estimate has Swift taking in a total of $1.4 billion in gross revenue, according to concert data tracker Pollstar .
Have any other artists come close to that amount? Here's a look at the 10 highest-grossing concert tours, based on Billboard Boxscore's most recent data as of April 20, 2023.
- Elton John — Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour (2018-20, 22-present) : $853 million
- Ed Sheeran — The ÷ (Divide) Tour (2017-19) : $776 million
- U2 — U2 360° Tour (2009-11) : $736 million
- Guns N' Roses — Not in This Lifetime... Tour (2016-19) : $584 million
- The Rolling Stones — A Bigger Bang Tour (2005-07) : $558 million
- The Rolling Stones — No Filter Tour (2017-19, 21) : $547 million
- Coldplay — A Head Full of Dreams Tour (2016-17) : $524 million
- Roger Waters — The Wall Live (2010-13) : $459 million
- AC/DC — Black Ice World Tour (2008-10) : $442 million
- Harry Styles — Love on Tour (2021-present) :$418 million
The success of Swift's tour is not surprising. When tickets first went on sale in November 2022, Ticketmaster's website crashed from all the traffic . During the first day of ticket sales, the Eras Tour sold over 2.4 million tickets, the most sold by an artist in a single day, according to Ticketmaster .
Tickets for the Eras Tour range from $50 to $899 for the most expensive VIP package. However, in the resale market tickets are much pricier, as even the cheapest seats go for $1,000, according to Axios .
Including other expenses like clothing, hotel accommodations and travel arrangements, concert-goers spend $1,300 on average to attend the tour, according to a recent survey by QuestionPro, a research company.
Based on the survey's findings, total spending on Taylor Swift's tour in 2023 is expected to be around $5 billion. That's larger than the gross domestic product of 50 countries, according to Billboard.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour breaks record as highest-grossing music tour ever
Taylor Swift's Eras Tour is officially the highest-grossing music tour ever, becoming the first to surpass $1 billion dollars in revenue.
The tour, which began in March 2023 and is set to conclude in December 2024 after a total of 151 shows worldwide, has earned $1.04 billion (£840 million) to date, according to Pollstar.
This breaks the record set by Elton John’s five-year farewell tour which ended earlier this year, bringing in $939 million (£749 million) over 328 shows.
Swift’s sixth concert tour is in fact so popular that it has earned more than this year’s next two highest-grossing tours (Beyoncé’s and Bruce Springsteen’s) combined.
Beyoncé’s 56-date Renaissance World Tour broke Madonna’s 14-year-old record for the highest-grossing music tour by a female artist , earning $579 million (£468 million) between May and October, before The Eras Tour subsequently took the title.
Described by Swift as a journey through all her musical “eras”, each show is over 3.5 hours long with a set list of 44 songs divided into 10 acts.
It has received immensely positive reviews from critics, who have heaped praise on the production’s concept and quality, as well as Swift’s performances.
Her devoted fanbase, the Swifties, have turned out in full force to see their idol, crashing ticketing sites, selling out hotels, and even causing earthquake-like seismic activity at certain shows, as happened in Seattle in July.
With roughly 72,000 people in attendance at each concert, and tickets averaging around $238, the tour is grossing over $17 million per show.
According to Pollstar, 4.3 million tickets have been sold to date, and at this trajectory, the tour could realistically rake in over $2 billion dollars if all the remaining scheduled shows are played.
Merchandise has also proven to be a lucrative source of revenue, with estimates that it has brought in around $200 million so far.
The Eras Tour is just one of Swift’s many successes in 2023. In addition to recently being named Time ’s Person of the Year, and the re-recording of her decade-old 1989 being the best-selling album of the year, she has broken multiple world records.
In June, she was awarded the record for the most simultaneous albums on the US Billboard 200 for a living artist, with 10 of her albums charting at the same time.
She then broke several more records in July :
- Most US No.1 albums by a female artist – 12
- Most US singles chart entries (female) – 212
- Most Top 10 debuts on the US Hot 100 (female) – 31
- Most simultaneous new entries on the Hot 100 (female) – 26
- Most cumulative weeks at No.1 on US albums charts (solo female) – 63
And in August, she made history with the most monthly listeners on Spotify (female) , becoming the first female artist to amass 100 million.
With plans to release more music and continue on her record-breaking tour, we’ve no doubt that Taylor Swift will achieve many more Guinness World Records titles in 2024!

The best time to visit Russia is during the months of May to September. Although Russia is the largest country and weather can vary vastly, the popular cities and locations in Russia will be experiencing a warm weather and long, sunny days during this time.
You can expect to spend around $60 – $80 for a solo traveler staying at a decently rated hotel. This price will cover food, transportation and other fees. For a more luxurious vacation, you will be spending anywhere from $150 – $250.
Russia has a lot of specialties attached to it. From ballet and theatre to vodka and Russian culture, there is a lot to expect. Famous landmarks include Lake Baikal, The Red Square, The Hermitage and Moscow Metro System.
Being the largest country on the planet, there is definitely a lot of area to cover in Russia. However, most of Russia is barren and uninhabitable. For popular tourist destinations, 2 weeks should be enough for a majestic experience of Russian culture, nature and food.
The most iconic Russian dishes include the Blini (Russian pancakes), Pelmeni, Beef Stroganoff, Syrniki, Kasha (porridge), Borscht and Okroshka. Russia is also famous for their world-renowned vodka.
Highest-Paid Golfers: Top On-Course Earnings Since 2023 Masters
Scottie Scheffler enters the 2024 Masters tournament on an absolute tear with a pair of wins and a second-place finish during his last three events. It is more of the same from 2023 when he posted 14 top-five finishes, four more than any other PGA Tour player.
He is the Masters betting favorite at a prime Tiger-like +450, ahead of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm at +1100, according to FanDuel.
Scheffler's run has been great for his bank account with $28 million in winnings and bonuses since the 2023 Masters. Yet, the tally lags a golfer who won't be in Augusta this week, having failed to meet any of the 20 qualifications for an invitation.
Talor Gooch has earned $39.5 million over the past 12 months on the LIV Golf tour, more than any other player in the world, ahead of Viktor Hovland ($32.4 million) and Scheffler.
Gooch, who joined LIV in May 2022 after eight years as a pro, has been the one of the biggest beneficiaries of the new league and its backing by Saudi Arabia's $925 billion-in-assets Public Investment Fund (PIF). During his time on the PGA Tour, Gooch won a single event and $9 million in cumulative prize money. LIV pried him from the PGA Tour with a $30 million signing bonus; his career winnings on the LIV tour after just two years are an additional $55 million.
The 20 golfers with the most prize money earned over the past 12 months won $358 million from official and unofficial events across the PGA, LIV and DP World tours. The total also includes bonuses from the PGA's FedEx and Comcast Business programs, as well as the LIV season-long points race. Gooch earned an $18 million bonus for finishing atop the LIV standings, while Hovland also made $18 million for his 2023 FedEx title.
LIV can claim 11 golfers in the top 20, although Rahm generated most of his on-course winnings on the PGA Tour before the Spaniard joined LIV in December with his nine-figure signing bonus. The PGA Tour has banned LIV golfers from its events, but the majors allow the defectors to play if they qualify. Brooks Koepka ($20.1 million) took full advantage of his invites to the four 2023 majors, tallying $5.1 million in winnings fueled by a win at the PGA Championship and runner-up finish at the Masters. Thirteen LIV golfers are in the 2024 Masters field.
The PGA Tour increased prize money last year in direct response to LIV poaching its player roster. The Tour handed out more than $560 million in prize money in 2023, including $100 million for the Player Impact Program (PIP) and $75 million for the Tour Championship, up $140 million from the prior year. The PIP money, which was not included in our on-course amounts, goes to the top 20 players who boosted engagement and publicity for the tour.
In 2023, LIV paid out $405 million over 14 events, including $115 million in team prize money. Our on-course winnings factor in the $50 million in winnings during the season-ending Doral team event but not the other $65 million paid out to teams, as much of that goes toward funding team operating expenses.
The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf continue to negotiate the "framework agreement" that was announced in June to merge their commercial operations. The original end-of-year deadline w as extended. Last month at his annual news conference before the Players Championship, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan reiterated on multiple occasions, "It's going to take time."
Endorsements and LIV Golf signing bonuses are not included in our earnings totals. Sportico 's 2023 list of the highest paid athletes factored in those revenue streams, and 10 golfers cracked the top 100, led by Rahm ($203 million), McIlroy ($77.4 million) and Tiger Woods ($77.2 million).
Overall, those 10 golfers earned $670 million last year from prize money, sponsorships, appearance fees and signing bonuses.

Moscow extends a warm welcome to Indian travellers with enhanced infrastructure and hidden gems
Russia actively promoting moscow as a tourist destination for indian travellers, improving infrastructure and visa process..
Russia is making an active bid to attract Indian travellers to visit Moscow -- a huge megalopolis and the historical, political and spiritual heart of the Russian Federation. The Moscow City Tourism Committee is promoting the city not only as a cultural capital but also as a business hub as it plans to onboard trade partners, tourists and vacationers. Moscow has also strengthened cooperation with the tourism sectors of allied nations, hosting familiarization tours for delegates and arranging business trips to showcase the city's tourism potential.
To accommodate visitors, Moscow is improving its infrastructure: signs are now available in English and Chinese, all announcements on public transport are repeated in English, and hotels are also adapting to cater to the needs of guests from various countries and ensure a comfortable stay. "We are still on our way to restore the flow of Indian tourists in Moscow like it used to be before the pandemic," said Bulat Nurmukhanov, Head of International Cooperation Division of Moscow City Tourism Committee.
Bulat further said that before the pandemic, there was a steady growth of 12-15 per cent on a year-on-year basis. In the first half of the year, Moscow received about 20,000 Indians, compared to the same period a year ago, it is about 56 per cent higher. In a bid to make Moscow a must-visit destination, the committee is actively working on improving the infrastructure for international travellers. Moscow is spearheading the development of innovative standards in catering to the needs of foreign travellers.
Tourists arriving in the capital can stay in hotels of various price segments. They can savour traditional Russian cuisine, and can also indulge in a diverse culinary experience, with options ranging from authentic Indian delicacies to continental dishes prepared to the highest standards. In 2022, the number of foreign tourists who visited Moscow increased by 6.3 per cent compared to 2021, reaching a total of 1.7 million.
Travelling to Moscow has now become easier as tourists from India and 54 other countries can apply for an electronic visa to enter Russia from August 1, 2023. The impact of e-visa rollout would be available by October this year after the quarterly data from the Russian border control agencies is analysed, Bulat said.
Moreover, the Russian government is planning to come out with a virtual 'Foreign Tourist Card' that will enable cashless payments for various services. "The idea behind this card is, a person back home in India can remotely apply for this card and then he/she can transfer money from the personal bank account to this bank account," Bulat added.
Meanwhile, sources in the Indian Embassy in Moscow told reporters that the Indian tourism ministry as well as the governments of Goa and Kerala are slated to participate in roundtable discussions this month. There are also plans to engage social media influencers to improve the inward traffic to India. Before the pandemic, around 3 lakh Russian tourists visited India annually. The numbers are down to around 80,000-90,000 of late.
To facilitate easy visitor movement across the city, there is "Discover Moscow" -- a navigation and travel web portal about Moscow and "RUSSPASS travel service" -- a digital platform designed for planning trips across Russia. The Discover Moscow portal features descriptions of over 1,200 architectural landmarks in Moscow. The site provides news, digests with festival and event information and curated lists of exhibition venues.
By availing the RUSSPASS travel service, tourists can access all essential information for a trip to Moscow on the site, including visa and currency matters, accommodation and transportation options in the capital. The site also offers a trip builder feature, allowing tourists to select pre-designed city routes or create their own itinerary from their favourite locations. There are versions of the site in Russian, English, Spanish and Arabic.
On the cultural scene, Moscow boasts 10,000 cultural venues including theaters, museums, libraries, parks, cinemas, concert halls, and more. In the last decade, around 900 parks and green spaces have been renovated.
