Skorpios III

skorpios cruises chile

Embark on a journey of unparalleled adventure and natural wonders aboard the Skorpios III on an expedition cruise through the mesmerizing landscapes of Chilean Patagonia. With over 40 years of expertise, Skorpios Cruises offers safe, unique, and exclusive exploration of the Southern Patagonian Icefield—the world’s third largest water reserve.

Built in 1995 and remodeled in 2012, Skorpios III is Southern Patagonia’s only A1 Ice Class rated expedition ship, perfectly tailored for navigating the challenging conditions of Patagonia. Its modest dimensions (70m length, 10m beam, 4.2m draft) make it the ideal floating base for venturing into the narrow channels and wild places it sails.

Life On Board

With 45 cabins for just 90 passengers spread across five decks, each featuring lower beds, plasma TVs, and spacious private bathrooms, the ship beckons intrepid travelers with an intimate setting where comfort is paramount and service levels sublime.

Guests can enjoy a comprehensive, all-inclusive experience on board, benefiting from full board—including fresh, local gastronomy and an open bar policy which includes premium Chilean wines—an exciting shore excursion program, and bilingual lectures from the expert expedition team.

Expedition Experience

Skorpios III sails a 4-night, 500 nautical mile (900 kilometer) Kaweskar Route commencing from Puerto Natales, just an hour away from the renowned Torres del Paine National Park. Thanks to her A1 Ice Class rating, your voyage will be 100% through the channels and fjords of Southern Patagonia, providing unparalleled access to immense glaciers and enabling you to witness their grandeur from astonishing proximity.

Along the way you’ll visit or see 15 glaciers of the Southern Ice Field up close, including the giant Guillard, Amalia and El Brujo, where disembarkations are organized, and immerse yourself in the rich biodiversity of the region, encountering elephant seals, sea lions, dolphins, cormorants, and condors at iconic locations like the Guardramiri, Calvo, and De las Montañas fjords.

For a more extensive exploration, Skorpios III also occasionally operates the 7-night ‘Nomads of Patagonia’ repositioning cruise. This comprehensive route combines the Chonos and Kaweskar routes, thereby including the more panoramic stretch of northern Chilean Patagonia which provides a wider variety of visits and experiences, including not only glaciers but also hot springs, diverse fauna, and insights into the local culture of Chiloe and Patagonia.

Environmental Stewardship

Skorpios Cruises takes pride in its commitment to environmental protection, and has set up a joint operation with the National Forest Corporation, CONAF, a collaboration which aims to minimize the impact of tourism on the pristine environment. Initiatives include constructing paths and small bridges in Bernardo O’Higgins National Park and organizing on board talks on conservation to raise awareness of the environmental issues facing the region.

Embark on a journey that transcends the ordinary, and explore the untouched beauty of Chilean Patagonia aboard Skorpios III.

Itineraries & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

5 Day - Kaweskar Route

itinerary map

Embarkation

AM: Check in at the Skorpios terminal at before 11:00h on the day of your cruise departure then Ship safety talk, on a location to be indicated.

PM: After lunch, start navigation in the Almirante Montt Gulf towards Caleta Juarez in Guardramiro Fjorf and observation of Elephant Seals. Back to the ship crossing Kirke narrows, Morla Vicuna, Union, Collingwood, and Sarmiento channels.

Skorpios III - Kaweskar Route

Guillard Fjord & Sarratea Bay

AM: Sailing to the end of the Pitt Channel, beyond Chatham Island, we find on the port side the entrance to the Guillard Fjord or Sine. A small entrance between mountains flanks its entry and slowly the MV Skorpios III sails this wonderful 10-miles fjord to where we will anchor. Its great beauty is breathtaking; surrounded, as we are, by enormous mountains of an intense green, their lofty peaks crowned by eternal ice and snow. Once anchored in this place, a beautiful and imposing Glacier appears before us: the Guilliard, which descends from the Andes mountain range to deposit its ice in a huge glacial moraine, with a river delta.

PM: In the afternoon, boat exploration through the Glacier's channels and navigation to Sarratea Bay and return to the ship. Dinner will be served on board.

Skorpios III - Kaweskar Route

Amalia Glacier & El Brujo

AM: Early sailing to the Southern Ice Field glaciers is an unforgettable experience for those travelers who enjoy exploring and visiting unique far off places. To watch the elongated silhouette of the Amalia Glacier falling from the Andes Mountains and coming down to embrace Mount Reclus is an incredible sight, as are its blue ice towers that soar to a height of 90 meters and span a width of 3 kilometres. Its extraordinarily varied ice floes contrast with the surrounding rocks that show the faint presence of incipient mosses. Motor Vessel Skorpios III crosses this area slowly in order to give its passengers a panoramic view of this marvelous glacier and its surroundings.

PM: While sailing through the Patagonian channels and look at the marvelous natural beauties that surround us, we come to the El Brujo Glacier, an enormous ice block with a smooth rock surface on one side. The passengers will take to the boats in order to get a closer look at this glacier. They will debark on a rock known as "Garbo" rock, where they can walk along the glacier and look at the way in which the ice crawls down, smoothing these rocks for millennia. The summits of this natural amphitheatre are always covered with snow and their slopes abound in trees and vegetation.

Skorpios III - Kaweskar Route

Fjord of the Mountains & Herman Glacier

AM: Visit to the Fjord of the Mountains, where you will be able to look at four glaciers which descend from the Sarmiento Mountain Range to the sea, two of which are in our logbook. Then visit the Alsina Glacier, boat exploration of the surroundings. Back in the ship, we will continue sailing toward the Fjord of the Mountains and the Bernal Glacier, where we will disembark and hike through a small native forest and along a path across a small glacial water lagoon. We continue the hike over the frontal and lateral moraines until we reach the front of the glacier. From here we will have the opportunity to touch some ice and watch the receding phase of a glacier that no longer reaches the sea. Return to the ship, which is performing a supplying maneuver acquiring pure, natural water from a waterfall. This is the water consumed on board for all the ship's services.

PM: In the afternoon, we will go to the Herman Glacier, at the end of a small fjord surrounded by colorful vegetation and abundant fauna, and sail through its ice floes and look at its colorful blue front.

Skorpios III - Kaweskar Route

Disembarkation

AM : After an overnight cruise that takes us back to Puerto Natales, we anchor off before 07.00h and disembarkation is scheduled for around 0 8.00h to 9.30h

Skorpios III - Kaweskar Route

8 Day - Nomads of Patagonia

itinerary map

AM: Receive a warm welcome aboard the Skorpios III. Sail from Puerto Montt through the Tenglo Canal, Llanquihue archipelago, view of the village of Calbuco, crossing the Gulf of Ancud.

PM: Chiloé archipelago navigation, Mechuque, Chauques, Caguache, Tranqui islands. Crossing of the Corcovado Gulf.

Skorpios III - Nomads of Patagonia

Puerto Aguirre & Quitralco Fjord

AM: Visit Puerto Aguirre, a remote fishing village located on Huichas Island in the Chonos Archipelago. Its residents have all the basic equipment of a city but with the tranquility provided by the landscape that surrounds them.

PM: Quitralco Fjord is an ancient glacier bed surrounded by large snow-capped mountains, with impenetrable, exuberant, and unique vegetation, in a temperate microclimate next to a calm and transparent sea. Here, Skorpios has a paradisiacal place for the exclusive rest of its passengers and where the thermal facilities with warm and pure waters of volcanic origin are located at 32o and 38o C, in indoor and outdoor pools, where you can enjoy thermal baths and steam. Hiking in the middle of this southern jungle is another of the activities in this fjord of great beauty. In this place, we will enjoy a Chilean and Patagonian barbecue, in the Skorpios stove. Quitralco means “Waters of Fire”, in the Aboriginal language.

Skorpios III - Nomads of Patagonia

Pulluche Channel & Ana Pink Bay

AM-PM: Today, we navigate the Pulluche Channel and Ana Pink Bay. At dawn, the crossing of the Gulf of Penas begins. End of the crossing at night, sailing through Messier Channel.

Skorpios III - Nomads of Patagonia

AM-PM: Puerto Edén is a fishing village located on Wellington Island, the birthplace of the Kaweskar or Alacalufes ethnic group. This small village has 300 inhabitants and most of them are artisanal fishermen. It is also possible to buy handycrafts from the last Kaweskar descendants.

Skorpios III - Nomads of Patagonia

Pío XI Glacier

AM: Visit of the Pío XI Glacier, the largest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere. Always heading north, crossing the waters of the Eyre Sound, nature gives us an overwhelming spectacle due to its colossal dimensions and its inexplicable beauty: the imposing Pío XI Glacier. The front wall of this frozen giant is approximately 6 km wide and 75 meters high, but some of its towers can reach up to 90 meters. It is the largest glacier in the entire southern hemisphere. It covers an area of 1,265 km2. Its extension could house a city as large as Santiago de Chile. One of its most notable characteristics is that it is one of the few glaciers that continues its advancement process. In fact, in the last 50 years, it has grown by more than 10 km. Sailing among the icebergs that the snowdrift deposits in the sea overwhelms us with amazement and emotion, bringing us closer to nature and our interior.

PM: Sailing south through Eyre Fjord, Canal Wide, Concepción, Canal Tres Cerros, Canal Pitt, anchoring in Caleta Villarrica at midnight.

Skorpios III - Nomads of Patagonia

Amalia Glacier

AM: Navigation in front of the Amalia Glacier, disembarking on the peninsula to see the rocks polished by the glacier, its vegetation and its higher altitude surroundings. The Amalia Glacier, is located in the central part of the Southern Ice Field, a field that is considered the third freshwater reserve in the world. Its long silhouette seems to hang down from the mountains; Seeing it is quite a spectacle. Its ice towers and the color contrast with its surroundings excite any viewer. The Amalia glacier has an approximate width of 2.5 km and a height of 70 meters. Its ice mass is largely supplied by intense snowfall almost all year round. In this paradise of natural beauty, the M/N Skorpios III approaches in front of it and then we travel from south to north to enjoy all its blue splendor. Its great scientific importance lies in the fact that at the center of its ice mass rises a volcano, called Reclus: a mystery for volcanologists due to its location and behavior. After this excursion, we sail south through Asia Fjord.

PM: In the afternoon, arrival at El Brujo Glacier, disembark in exploration boats towards some magmatic rocks to see this spectacular ice colossus and its high towers up close. Later in the afternoon, set sail towards the Fjord of the Mountains, through Sarmiento and Uni channels.

Skorpios III - Nomads of Patagonia

Bernal Glacier
