+++ Into a state of Slumber +++ Servants of the Deathkult, Haubersson speaking: The evolution of 2023 and a bunch of long-term conflicts within the band finally marked the end of the last known line-up. Fabian, Magge and Henrik announced their departure from Revel in Flesh and the common firm that connected all four core members. This line-up reached its interpersonal and creative end. All further live appearances have been canceled and at the current stage the last remaining recordings of what should have been album No.6 won't be released as they were supposed to be. Obviously because it would be nothing more than a compromise that no one really wants. Of course this announcement will be a shocker to all supporters, but the music of the Revel in Flesh discography lives on. And most of all your support will always be a part in a decent box of good memories. Thanks from the bottom of the heart!!! At the current stage I am the only remaining core member of the lineup. We wanna thank session member Jonas for his contribution since 2021. There are still a lot of mixed emotions, but parting ways offers new possibilities in life for all of us. I wish well to everyone. Revel in flesh will embark now into a sort of slumber status. I need a break to get back to strength again (health issues) and to think about how the legacy of the Deathkult could develop or not. Since we deal with DEATH METAL you never know when the corpses come back from the dead. CD review REVEL IN FLESH ‘The Hour of the Avenger’

revel in flesh tour

Germany’s South, that’s the home of Revel In Flesh. The guys, hailing from Schwäbisch Gmünd, founded the band in 2011 and released four longplayers since then. The latest one was entitled ‘Emissary of All Plagues’ and was published in 2016.

Three years later ‘The Hour of the Avenger’ will crawl out of the muddy soil of Swabia. It’s the bands first album for War Anthem Records and it comprises of ten own songs and plus a furious cover version of Motörhead’s ‘Rock Out’.

Revel In Flesh’s sound is very much inspire by Scandinavian Death Metal. The band name, being based on an Entombed song, clearly shows where the roots are and it also gives direction in what to expect from Revel In Flesh’s fifth studio album.

Deep growls and mighty riffing is what Revel In Flesh masters very well. It manifests itself in faster songs like ‘Deathblow’, being a raging Death Metal song from start to end. But what’s really well-done with this album is the change of pace. The guys have the mentioned uptempo smashers in their repertoire, but it’s the slower songs that have even more intensity. The six minutes ‘The Nightbreed’ is such a song. Slowly and brutal the track is a slow paced Death Metal beast that slowly crawls into your ears and mind. Furthermore it’s the grooving parts, like in ‘My Trial’ adding a pure headbangers spirit to the mix.

Revel In Flesh’s new album showcases a band that’s hungry. The Swabian quintet found their own interpretation of Scandinavia-based Death Metal and I could imagine that this album helps them a lot to grow their fanbase.

Emissary Of All Plagues

Revel in flesh, december 10, 2016.

Revel In Flesh - Emissary Of All Plagues album cover

Death Metal is really outstanding in terms of sonority. I'm speaking that due the fact that it supports every kind of musical experimentalism you can think of. But there are those bands that hold ground on a more traditional outfit, on that trend that we call Old School Death Metal. One of them is the German quintet REVEL IN FLESH , a destroyer of ears that is releasing their fourth album, "Emissary of All Plagues" . Being honest, there are some melodic lines that are not so evident that show that they aren't a band that is merely looking to the past. No, these guys are looking to the future, and their musical brutality knows no limit. But they're creating some dirty and fascinating songs, using and abusing from the Old School Death Metal insight, but being creative, so be prepared for the massacre!

On the mixing and mastering of the album, the name of Dan Swanö appears, so it's already a guarantee of a fine work. The sonority of the album is excellent, keeping that raw and nasty sound from the past, but with a modern and brutal outfit. So, you'll understand everything that the band is playing, but the oppressive brutality is present on the entire album. The cover art created by Juanjo Castellano is really amazing, a great and somber art. The fast and brutal "Emissary of All Plagues" (with excellent guttural vocals and good rhythmic changes), the rawness and filth guitar riffs of "Casket Ride" (but pay attention as some graven melodies appear), the somber atmosphere of the slow tempos shown on "Fortress of Gloom" (excellent vocals, indeed), the fast and massive Old School attack presented on "The Dead Lives On" , and the introspective rawness of "Dead to this World" can be said as their finest moments. But it's a sin to not hear and love their Death Metal version for "Doctor Doctor" , an old hymn from UFO that keeps the original features of the song, but imposing the brutal grasp of REVEL IN FLESH on it. Lovely and great album!

Almost Perfect

Songwriting, musicianship, memorability.

Revel in Flesh – The Hour of the Avenger

Hailing from Schwäbisch , Germany ’s Revel in Flesh made a clear impact in the underground death metal scene in Europe. Since the debut album Deathevocation , Revel in Flesh began modestly carrying the passion of the traditional style of the Swedish death metal. In the last couple of years they were able to develop musically by showing improvement with their recent albums such as  Emissary of All Plagues and the 2017 live album Live From the Crypts . Relatively speaking the German death metal quintet has reached to a standardized and consistent level but they are still cannot be compared to other acts such as Demonical , Puteraeon and Entrails . Since the beginning of the nineties era of death metal the German death metal bands like Fleshcrawl showed a strict faithfulness to the traditional Stockholm style. Now on their fifth album entitled The Hour of the Avenger , Revel in Flesh seems quite solid and fortified.

Revel in Flesh - Photo

With such massive improvement in the guitar department handled by Maggesson  and vocalist/guitarist Haubersson . Who both provide amps full of melodies and catchy rhythm guitar which recently has been the main strength of the band. The opening track Th e Hour of the Avenger is boasted by the fine abilities of the guitars and double bass handled by Henriksson . While the strong growls of Haubersson are indeed brutal, the drums on the new album sound quite solid. On the second track Trial the guitars carry the vibe to the old school sound with gnarly melodies matching the riffs and the tempo.  The Hour of the Avenger is a mid tempo album and well-structured by the individual abilities of the members.

It’s noteworthy to say that the twin guitars on the album are impressively executed specially the rhythm section which is very sensational. And with the thudding bass guitar handled by Gotzberg , Revel in Flesh provides a strong sense of musicianship. The band saw a change in the line-up when the former drummer Vogtsson departed from the band after the release of their first live album in 2017. Now after two years of gap Revel in Flesh re-generates their musical formula as they return to cement their sound. The Hour of the Avenger is a rational continuation from the previous album only this time the German quintet decided to bring melodies into full focus.

For example, Blood Oath which begins with a multiple melodies while the booming lead guitar works in excellent conjunction. For a moment I kept thinking if Revel in Flesh are vying with Amon Amarth or Entrails . Fact is the band has never sounded so melodic before, the latest album is centralized upon the modern style of melodies. The Nihilistic Nothingness is an ideal example of the band’s latest development. Surely the melodies on the latest offering sound more refined than the past albums. The album combines aggression and melodies with influences from acts such as Entrails , and Amon Amarth .

The music generally features some catchy melodies and hooks laid by the guitar segments. However the drums here are mainly adjusted to bring the balance to the tracks without emphasizing on blast beats. Therefore the album is confined with aggression and solid drum beats. On other tracks like Deathblow , Revel in Flesh shows aggression accompanied by melodies and deep growls. The blast of energy on the seventh tracks Pervertin Speed Kill somehow lacks the brutality but nevertheless the track becomes centered on melodies, with drums providing blast beats and double bass. Yet these ethos increase on tracks like Wayfarer where the riffing style becomes more varied in terms of melodies. The focus on rhythmic creativity surely defines the quality of music on the new album.

The Hour of the Avenger is a catchy album which includes many memorable moments from the melodies and aggression. The last couple of albums have shown clear achievement in terms of quality and music. But those who demand aggression and brutality will find this album stuffed fully in melodies. This is still a good album by Revel in Flesh but the problem is that most of the tracks sound identical to each other. Despite of the solid performance the latest album is still above the mediocre records that came out this year.  The Hour of the Avenger also includes many slower mid-tempo songs and one bonus tracks of Motörhead ’s song Rock Out .

Release Date: December 6th, 2019 Label: War Anthem Records Track list:

  • The Hour of the Avenger
  • The Nihilistic Nothingness
  • Pervitin Speed Kill
  • The Wayfarer
  • Skull Sacrifice
  • The Nightbreed
  • Rock Out (Motorhead cover)

revel in flesh tour

Germany’s Revel in Flesh , have been one of my favorite death metal albums for quite some time.  Their 3 rd album, Death Kult Legions was their best album and so they return a few years later to leave many other bands, in the dust, once again with Emissary of All Plagues .  With Dan Swano, at Unisound Studios, once again taking care of the production values, you know this is a winner.  For readers who are unfamiliar with Revel in Flesh , their sound is influenced from the Swedish brutality of early Entombed , Grave and Dismember , even throwing in some Edge of Sanity moments.  Still, Revel in Flesh retain an original quality, due to songwriting skills, atmosphere and riffs which are new to the death metal scene.

Opening with the title track, Revel in Flesh , wastes no time in reminding the listener that this is some of the finest, bone-crunching death metal being played today.  Vocalist, Ralf Hauber turns in his best performance, yet, with an extra deep and gruff approach, incorporating some higher registers, all the while remaining powerful and extra devilishly angry on this song and album.  The song opens with a classic Swedish fast beat and you will think to yourself, damn, I though the debut from Demonbreed , this year, had the finest Swedish inspired guitar tone, and you would be correct, if you have not listened to Emissary of All Plagues .   The guitar tone is so goddamned heavy, but distinguishable among all the other instruments, it will take your lifeless breath away.  Pretty soon the title track slaps you upside the head with a well-placed blast beat and your body is quivering in a mass of vomit, filth and excrement.  “Casket Ride” comes in next, more of a mid-paced song, incorporating fiendish double bass, which is chest-collapsing and a catchy chorus.

“Fortress of Gloom” is next up on the chopping block, with one of the catchiest, atmospheric and depressing opening riffs of any death metal song, you will hear.  This song is slower, grinding the listener into pulp, doing it all the while with class.  This song is a continuation of some of the elements Revel in Flesh experimented with on their last recording.  Allowing the song to breathe more the listener will realize the emotive nature of what Revel in Flesh are attempting to accomplish, with this style.  “Fortress of Gloom” is catchy, dark, depressing and utterly brilliant.  Faster paced songs are also splattered around, with “Lord of Flesh” and “Sepulchral Passage” crushing beyond belief, with blast beats, riffs to die for and Ralf growling as if he is trying to take your soul from you.  Ending with a classic metal song cover, “Doctor Doctor”, how could you possibly not want this album??

The production on this record is of the highest caliber, resulting in the massive guitar tone, audible bass, drums biting through and not overpowering and Ralf’s vocals mixed in quite well and not drowned out, which is sometimes common for this genre of death metal.  The songwriting is strong with all members turning in their best performances and while creating brutal music, also remembering to incorporate enough catchy moments and really driving home excellent song, after excellent song.

The album cover is once again killer and the tones of light, red all come together nicely.  Emissary of All Plagues is one of the highlights for 2016, if you were terrible this year, then no stocking stuffer for you and you must fork over the money to buy this.  Like their FB page, order their merch, if you’re from their neck of the woods, go to their shows and buy their merch and don’t forget to tell them how much you appreciate their music.  Revel in Flesh have churned out their best album and simply, one fantastic death metal album.  Buy or get burned at the stake!!!!!!

Album Review: Revel in Flesh – The Hour Of The Avenger (War Anthem Records)

The Deathkult rages on and the hour of the avenger draws near! After a succesful line–up change in the drum department and following the release of their “Relics Of The Deathkult” compilation in early 2018, Southern Germany based Revel in Flesh finally strike back with their 5th full-length album on their new label home War Anthem Records!

revel in flesh tour

The Hour Of The Avenger basically steps in where the highly acclaimed successor “Emissary Of All Plagues” ended. Revel in Flesh evolved and refined their very own formula of Death Metal in a logical way: more EPIC, more MELODIC, more INTENSE but still sticking to their roots deep within the classical European styled Death Metal from the 90s era.

It will be released on December 6th 2019.

Let the blackened death consume you, Revel in Flesh are here to destroy with their brand new album, The Hour of the Avenger. Ten tracks and one cover designed to grip you by the head, starting twisting and turning until bones snap and flesh rips resulting in nothing but a gruesome and bloody hole for them to scream into.

Yes, this is a very heavy and a very aggressive release. One with old-school riffing and soloing, filth-covered vocals and percussion that has a bit of tinniness to it. it’s very familiar but not so much that it sounds like retread.

It’s a damn good album that delivers on all its promises of deathly heaviness, bleak blackness and furious intent. Tracks like My Trial, The Nihilistic Nothingness, Deathblow and Skull Sacrifice move at such an evil pace that the only thing to do is to head-bang as furiously as possible.

That it’s closed out with a pretty damn good cover of Motörhead’s Rock Out is just an added bonus.

Revel in Flesh – Emissary of All Plagues (Cyclone Empire)

revel in flesh tour

High praise from none other than Mr. Dan Swanö on this one off the bat, stating that they had nailed the “ultimate tribute to the SweDeath guitar tone” with this album (Swanö did mix/master it after all). But how does Revel in Flesh’s fourth album hold up to those lofty expectations? Well, in brief, it doesn’t disappoint.

Revel in Flesh have been pulling off the Swe-death worship for a while, and Emissary of All Plagues , with practice and experience alone, lands them more towards the top of the ever-growing heap. There’s so many bands all vying for the same space at this point, but it takes more than mere copying to stand out. Something that Revel in Flesh have no problem doing – by focusing on the most important elements to focus on. For starters, the Swanö-endorsed guitar tone does do as intended. It’s thick, heavy, but it never feels sloppy and excessive. It’s definitely a hype-worthy approach and an HM-2 lover’s dream. Secondly, outside of the aggression factor, there’s got to be some strong melodies to keep it from repeating itself. Again, there’s no concerns here – “Casket Ride” provides some nice mid-tempo galloping at the front of the album and is sure to suck in the listener. “Lord of Flesh” executes something similar later on, with the added dynamics of some speed and plodding/sorrowful melodies bringing in some extra enjoyment. “Dead to this World” later fulfills the fist-raising growl-along and is an effective use of a slower tempo that still stays compelling. There’s even a cover of UFO’s “Doctor Doctor” that puts a nice deathly tone to the track.

All in all, despite the HM-2 crunch and effective Swedish abrasion, each track shines due to melodic undertones and riffs that keep it ahead of much of the old school Swedish imitators. Easily Revel in Flesh’s strongest effort to date, Emissary of All Plagues is one of the increasingly rare old school death metal albums worth a thorough investigation.

  6. CD review REVEL IN FLESH 'The Hour of the Avenger'

Germany's South, that's the home of Revel In Flesh. The guys, hailing from Schwäbisch Gmünd, founded the band in 2011 and released four longplayers since then. The latest one was entitled 'Emissary of All Plagues' and was published in 2016. Three years later 'The Hour of the Avenger' will crawl out of the muddy soil of Swabia.

  8. Revel In Flesh

One of them is the German quintet REVEL IN FLESH, a destroyer of ears that is releasing their fourth album, "Emissary of All Plagues". Being honest, there are some melodic lines that are not so evident that show that they aren't a band that is merely looking to the past. No, these guys are looking to the future, and their musical brutality ...

It's noteworthy to say that the twin guitars on the album are impressively executed specially the rhythm section which is very sensational. And with the thudding bass guitar handled by Gotzberg, Revel in Flesh provides a strong sense of musicianship. The band saw a change in the line-up when the former drummer Vogtsson departed from the band after the release of their first live album in 2017.

The group was booked for the Heidelberg Deathfest in early 2023. The band was working on a new record. Revel In Flesh was the name of an early Nihilist/Entombed track.

  12. Revel in Flesh

Germany's Revel in Flesh, have been one of my favorite death metal albums for quite some time. Their 3 rd album, Death Kult Legions was their best album and so they return a few years later to leave many other bands, in the dust, once again with Emissary of All Plagues.. With Dan Swano, at Unisound Studios, once again taking care of the production values, you know this is a winner.

  13. Revel In Flesh

The new REVEL IN FLESH album is here. And it arrives just on time in the dying days, in the complete END of this decade. It arrives to devastate all the festive season and joyful holiday mood.
