GET A QUICK ESTIMATE

Napa Valley, California’s first American Viticulture Area (AVA), is divided into 16 nested appellations, with sizes ranging from 3,300 to over 16,000 acres. Eight of these are known as the “Valley Floor AVAs,” surrounded by the Mayacamas and Vaca Mountains. Allow us to describe a few of those valley floor locations.

Valley Floor Napa Wine Tours

Saint Helena

The valley near St. Helena narrows south of Calistoga, protecting from the bay’s wind and fog, retaining the warmth, and home to wineries like Spottswoode, Charles Krug, and Raymond, each with a unique terroir. Vineyards in the center get ample sunlight, resulting in supple wines, while those in the western foothills produce robust wines with earthy and mineral notes. The region is ideal for Bordeaux varieties, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah.

Rutherford is the center of Napa Valley, geographically and historically, and is home to renowned wineries like Staglin, Scarecrow, and Dana. Cabernet thrives in Rutherford’s rich, well-drained soils, producing wines with concentration and depth known for their “Rutherford dust” flavor.

Oakville is renowned for its high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon. It has the highest concentration of benchmark estates in the valley, including Screaming Eagle, Opus One, and PlumpJack. The wines are typically rich, dense, and complex, with firmer tannins than Rutherford or Stags Leap versions, and often exhibit herbal and minty flavors.

Yountville is the birthplace of Napa’s wine industry. George Yount laid the foundation for the town of Yountville and planted the valley’s first vineyards in 1836. The region later became Napanook Vineyard. Today, Yountville is a lovely little town with plenty of excellent wineries and restaurants to visit.

Stags Leap District

The Stags Leap District is known for producing bold and powerful wines that are also smooth and elegant—often described as an “iron fist in a velvet glove.” The area has several renowned wineries, such as Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Reguschi Winery, Taylor Family Vineyards, and Shafer Vineyards. The knolls and the Palisades in the region create a wind tunnel effect that can significantly extend the growing season of the vines.

Oak Knoll District

Oak Knoll District is located at the southern end of central Napa Valley and is known for its relatively cooler climate and long growing season. It is one of Napa Valley’s flatter appellations, with notable wineries such as Fortunati Vineyards, Matthiasson, and Trefethen Winery. Just north of Napa, regular fog in the Oak Knoll district decreases temperatures, resulting in more elegant and understated wines.

Allow our concierge team to create a memorable day visiting the exceptional wineries along the Napa Valley valley floor.

Coombsville Napa Wine Tours

Coombsville AVA’s unique growing conditions make it the coldest grape-growing region in Napa, with temperatures that are ten degrees cooler than those of most areas. The region’s extended growing season allows grapes to mature longer on the vine, resulting in a more even ripening process and complex flavors. The area’s small-batch production methods further reveal depth and structure, making Coombsville an excellent choice for wine enthusiasts.

If you are keen on discovering Coombsville, our concierge team is at hand to assist you in planning a day of exploration and wine-tasting.

We extend an exclusive invitation to join us on a private wine-tasting tour of the northernmost appellations of Napa Valley, where you can indulge in the age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Francs that Diamond Mountain wineries are renowned for.

Diamond Mountain District Napa Valley Wine Tours

The Diamond Mountain District has a rich history dating back to 1862, but the region was rejuvenated in the late 1960s by a few ambitious growers. Jack and Jamie Davies of Schrambsberg Winery brought sparkling wine to the region and purchased their historic property in 1965. Al Brounstein, the founder of Diamond Creek Winery, recognized the potential of the mountain and purchased 79 acres in 1968, contributing to the region’s renewal. His winery has four distinct vineyards grown from “First-Growth” Bordeaux cuttings, producing highly-rated and coveted Cabernet Sauvignons.

We would be honored to have you as our guest on this unforgettable excursion to Diamond Mountain, where you can delight in rich, firmly structured Cabernets, exquisite aging sparkling wines, and a variety of Chardonnays.

Nestled on the hillsides of Howell Mountain lies an American Viticultural Area (AVA) that has earned a reputation for its intensely flavorful wines. The region, located only five miles northeast of St. Helena, is home to 45 vintners and growers, each producing their unique versions of robust and complex red wines.

Howell Mountain Napa Wines Tasting Tours

Despite its global acclaim, the history of Howell Mountain wines remains unknown to many. The area was once home to some of the most successful winemakers during the boom of the 1880s. In 1998, the region made history when two local winemakers won a Bronze medal at the Paris World Competition. The area’s wines continue to amaze visitors, and the release of new vintages is always a cause for widespread celebration.

Howell Mountain is a region that wine lovers cannot afford to miss. Its rich history, natural beauty, and intensely flavorful wines make it a must-visit destination. Our concierge team is excited to introduce you to the exceptional wineries in this region.

Los Carneros AVA is a region that includes parts of both Napa Valley and Sonoma in the United States. The area’s climate is relatively cooler due to the marine fog and breezes off San Pablo Bay. Carneros is unique among American appellations in that it spans both Napa and Sonoma counties, so it is not a “nested” AVA of Napa Valley. The Napa part of the area is named “Los Carneros.”

Los Carneros Wine Tours

Compared to Napa Valley, Los Carneros is much cooler but still considerably warmer than the Sonoma Coast. As a result, the Pinot Noirs tend to be comparatively ripe, round, and rich with an intense core of cherry fruit. The Chardonnays can be both powerful and bright with pronounced minerality. Los Carneros AVA was officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area in 1983. It was the first AVA purely defined by climate rather than geographical characteristics.

Our concierge team is excited to introduce you to the exceptional wineries in this region.

The Spring Mountain District, located behind the town of Saint Helena, boasts a plethora of small vineyards that offer first-class private wine-tasting tours. By booking chauffeured transportation, visitors can enjoy the scenic views of the beautiful hillside terrain that ranges from vineyards on slopes to rolling hills. However, the region’s exclusivity necessitates planning visits in advance due to the personal touch that each winery offers to its guests.

Spring Mountain District Napa Valley Wine Tours

There are around two dozen family-owned and operated wineries situated near St. Helena, comprising roughly 1,000 acres of vineyards. The owner of each winery, a family member, or even the winemaker usually welcomes visitors, adding a personal touch to the winery experience. The Spring Mountain District is the coolest region in Napa Valley, and its vineyards constitute less than 2% of the valley’s wines. Despite this, the vineyards require extra attention from viticulturists and winemakers due to the harsher climatic conditions that stress the vines. The grapes are often hand-tilled, adding to the challenges posed by the rugged hillside. Despite these challenges, the region’s fruitfulness is evident in the production of long-lived, intense wines.

We recommend that visitors allocate an entire day to enjoy a private wine-tasting tour in the Spring Mountain District, followed by a complete picnic arranged by our Concierge and tour guides, ensuring that visitors can enjoy their lunch without having to worry about traversing the hilly terrain.

Your Independent Guide to the Wine Country

The Best Napa Valley Wine Tours | Private Napa Tour Guides

CWA Staff [September 2017]

shutterstock_3292648

How do you find the best Napa Valley wine tours? We asked Napa insiders to point us the right direction. Everyone we asked agreed that find a private Napa wine tour is the best way to experience the Valley. We will start by acknowledging that there are many great ways to experience the wineries of Napa. There are some excellent guides to the Best Napa wineries and wineries that Napa insiders love . You could just rent a car and follow an itinerary. But to get beyond the roughly 400 wineries that are open to the public, you need to find a private Napa wine tour guide!

Find last minute deals on Napa area hotels here.

There Are Many Options for Touring Napa's Wine Country

Before we dig into the private Napa driver option, let's review some of your options for visiting the Napa wineries.

Walk To The Napa Wineries

Are you staying in town? A foot tour of the tasting rooms around your hotel can be a lot of fun. You also get a little exercise. Walking and drinking is relatively safe. Sadly, you won't find the best winery experiences by hoofing it.  Many of the best wineries are far from town!

Ride A Bike To The Napa Wineries

private winery tours napa valley

Drive Yourself To The Napa Wineries

While this is a popular option, we aren't big fans of the drive yourself option. Our major concern here is your safety. After you visit three or four wine tasting rooms in Napa, you should not get behind the wheel of a car. This chart will give you an idea of what is legal and what isn't.

You could select a designated driver for the group and let them drive the car. This is certainly an option if you can find someone who wants to go all the way to Napa just to look at the scenery and drink water. Does that person exist?

Another option is to hire someone to drive your car. We will touch on this option more when we discuss private tours below.

Take the Napa Valley Wine Train

While certainly one of the best Napa Valley wine tours, the wine train doesn't give you all the flexibility of other tours. If you are on a multi-day trip, we suggest you include one day on the train. You can sit back and relax while you enjoy a gourmet meal and the romance of rail travel. You can learn more about the Napa Valley Wine Train experience in another one of our articles.

Find A Tour Company To Visit The Napa Wineries

best napa valley wine tours van

  • Do you want to go with a group of people you don't know?
  • Do you want to round up a big group and get a bus?
  • Do you want to spend more on a luxury vehicle?
  • How much partying do you want to do in the car/bus/limo?

These are important decisions, but the best Napa wine tours are about more than this. The best tours give you access. You get access to the top wineries, the top wines and the best insider information in the Valley. That is why we love private Napa Valley wine tours with a small group of fellow wine lovers. For us, the vehicle is secondary. A nice, not necessarily fancy car can get the job done.

Private Napa Valley Wine Tours

So why are we so convinced that the best Napa Valley wine tours are small private tours with knowledgeable tour guides?

There are roughly 400 wineries in Napa Valley that welcome the public for tastings. There are also roughly 600 wineries in Napa that do not. With the right private Napa Valley wine tour, you can get access to some of these 600 wineries.

Not only can the right guide get you access to these otherwise private wineries, they can get you better treatment at both the private and public wineries because they are connected. There are only a handful of private guides who have this type of access. That means you need to book your tour well in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

August through October, which coincides with the harvesting season, is the best time to visit Napa Valley . March through May is also a nice, often less-crowded time to visit.

The best Napa wine tours start at around $120 per person; fees will increase depending on tour inclusions (such as meals, gratuities and tastings). Prices may also fluctuate based on tour group size as well as the time of year and day of week.

Yes, it is recommended that you tip both your tour guide and your tasting host at each vineyard. Some tours include gratuities in rates, which may be something you want to look for when booking your tour.

None of the wineries have a dress code, so opt for casual (but not too casual) and comfortable. Think flowy sundresses, wide leg pants, khaki shorts or pants, dark jeans and nice tops (blouses, collared shirts) with sandals or sneakers. You'll also want to bring a light jacket as it can get chilly on some of the vineyards, even in the summer.

Why Trust U.S. News Travel

Amanda Norcross has previously traveled to Napa Valley, visiting select wineries on her own and also with a tour. She always recommends a tour, not just for a designated driver with a local's perspective, but also because you get to meet and imbibe with other fun and interesting tourgoers along the way. She used her personal experience and insights from other travelers to determine the best wine tours in Napa Valley. Cheers!

Fine Wine Tours started in 2014, offering private and custom Wine Tours throughout the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Owner and Tour Guide Steve Batory is a lifelong Napa resident and brings more than 40 years of experience in the wine industry and the Napa & Sonoma Valleys.

Tours are available every day of the week and typically last all day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Half-day tours are also available.

Tour groups range from 2-6 people. Tours can accommodate more guests upon request.

Tours will include a 45-minute siesta around 1 p.m. at an upscale, specialty deli that accomodates indoor and outdoor seating, with areas for guests to relax.

As of April 2021, most wineries in Napa and Sonoma Valleys are open for tours and tastings, but need several days notice for a tasting. With the ever-changing health and safety landscape in California, it is recommended, but not required, that guests carry negative COVID-19 test results, and/or COVID vaccinations (if available). Napa Private Wine Tours Vs. Small Group Tours

As you are planning your trip to Napa Valley you may be wondering what the difference is between booking a private wine tour vs a small group tour.

They both offer an incredible experience in wine country and I would recommend either one over relying on Uber to get around Napa or driving yourself.

a small group wine tasting tour in napa valley

However, there are a couple of key differences that knowing could help you decide what works best for you and your group.

Private Wine Tour

  • A private tour only includes your group of friends & family
  • Customizable itinerary
  • Flexibility in the day
  • Could be more expensive than a small group tour
  • Pick up from accommodations

Small Group Tour of Napa

  • Set itinerary (you do not get to pick the wineries)
  • Traveling with a group usually of 8 to 18 people
  • Pick up from a designated location, usually not your hotel or Airbnb
  • Sometimes will include wine tastings in the price

Best Small Group Tour in Napa Valley

Small group wine-tasting tour through napa valley.

If you would prefer to book a small group tour instead of a private wine tour of Napa, I suggest this one. With over 500 raving reviews , you can’t go wrong! This wine tasting tour is a great way to see Napa Valley with a small group.

“ Luis was fabulous guide. Small group of 12 on our small bus and 3 stops at beautiful and unique small wineries with very authentic and intimate experience with the wineries. Highly recommend. We had a fabulous day. ” – Peggy W. (read more reviews ).

💰 How to Save Money on Wine Tastings

It can be a little bit of a splurge booking a private wine tour of Napa Valley. And it’s totally worth it, you don’t want to risk drinking and driving.

However, there is good news. You can save some money wine tasting with the Priority Wine Pass .

Priority Wine Pass

The Napa Valley private wine tours do not typically cover your wine tastings. And the prices of wine tasting vary depending on which winery you decide to visit. They can be anywhere from $40 per person up to $200 or more.

Luckily, Priority Wine Pass offers tons of wine tasting deals in Napa and Sonoma. With participating wineries, you can get 2-for-1 tasting – so all you need is one priority pass for you and a friend or significant other.

wine tastings in napa valley with priority wine pass

You can also get discounts on wine purchases, free tastings, tours and experiences, and more.

Tip: Get discounts at some of my favorite wineries including V. Sautti, Hall Wines St. Helena & Rutherford, Beringer Winery, Charles Krug, Black Stallion, and many many more!

If you plan on  visiting wine country on more than one occasion or longer than 3 days,  I suggest buying a year pass- and if you do, you can  save even more with my   Travel Today Work Tomorrow exclusive deal  & get off $20 on the yearly Priority Pass 🤑

Or just in town for a weekend?  The 3 day pass still easily pays for itself 🍷

🍷 To get more information on the  Priority Wine Pass  you can go here

Do Napa Valley Wineries Have a Dress Code

The best way to describe the dress code in Napa Valley is Wine Country Causal. This basically means you should wear clothes that are both comfortable and stylish. My favorite go-to outfit for wine tasting is a sundress or a cute pair of shorts and a nice top.

Heels are a definite no-go at the Napa wineries. You will want comfortable shoes because you will be walking on the uneven terrain of vineyards and cobblestones. For more tips, check out my freebie: What to Wear Wine Tasting in California

What to Wear Wine Tasting in California

How much does a napa wine tour cost.

The cost of a Napa wine tour can vary significantly and depend on several factors including the type of tour, the number of wineries visited, and the level of exclusivity.

  • Small Group Tours: These are usually the most affordable options. Prices can range from about $100 to $200 per person. These tours typically include visits to 2 to 3 wineries, transportation, and sometimes lunch.
  • Private Tours: These tours are more exclusive and personalized, and more expensive. Prices can range from $200 to $600 or more per person, depending on the level of luxury, the number of wineries, and whether they include gourmet meals, private tastings, or behind-the-scenes access.
  • Luxury Tours: High-end tours, which may include luxury transportation (like limousines or private cars), exclusive access to high-end wineries, gourmet meals, and personalized itineraries, can cost upwards of $600 to $1000+ per person.
  • Self-Guided Tours: For those on a budget, self-guided tours where you drive yourself can be a cost-effective option. The main costs here are tasting fees at each winery (ranging from $20 to $50 or more per winery) and your transportation.

How many wineries should you visit in a day in Napa?

To fully experience and enjoy each winery, you should visit up to three wineries in a day in Napa Valley.   Two to three wine tastings in one day will  allow you to appreciate your wine tastings and the stunning vineyard landscapes without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Tip: Instead of adding a fourth winery to your itinerary, pick up a picnic lunch or visit the Oxbow Market in downtown Napa

Had a great experience with Mr. Abe our driver. He was kind and funny. We went to three wineries and ate lunch at the second one. Everything was perfectly executed. I recommend this place.

Love this company and the service. We use them every year when we go to Havana Nights at the castle and will continue to do so!

Photo of Jessica P.

We toured on a Monday with a full group! Our driver Abe was very kind, funny and professional. The first winery we stopped at was our favorite but the other two were great as well. We would definitely book with this company again if they change up the winery stops! Lunch was provided at the second location and we had Panera box lunches. Only thing to note, we got an email saying we'd have a 10am pickup and we got the call for pickup at 9am. We were ready so it was fine, but something to be aware of!!

Helped my boss book a day trip in Napa and it was pretty last minute, only two days before and had nothing on the itinerary. Worked with one of the concierges and she was able to pull together an itinerary within a day for a party of 10 that included a small child (which some wineries don't allow) and find dinner reservations for a party of 12. Driver called a day ahead to check in and the day included three wineries and dinner. The party had a great time. Couldn't have done it without Napa Valley Wine Country Tours!

My sisters and I all live in different states but make it a point to go on a trip each year. Never having been to Napa we were excited for the views and of course the wine. Our driver Zedan, picked us up promptly and gave us the run down of our day. He let one of my sisters DJ which was epic. Once we arrived at the first winery he asked to take photos of us at two different locations and every photo came out great! Black stallion had amazing wine and our server was very friendly. The second stop was the Pestoni winery and we had a blast. This was my favorite one, their was an impeccable view and corn hole and Zedan brought us a delicious lunch to enjoy with our wine. We were pretty out of it by the last winery , so thankful to Zedan for being such a caring and professional gentleman. His conversation and fun personality made this tour memorable for my sisters and I. Zedan is the man!!!

Working with scheduling our trip to Napa with George was excellent. George was super professional, WELL informed, SUPER experience and always very pleasant and helpful in every way. He set us up with the BEST itinerary. George explained everything to the last detail. No surprises. We were picked up in a beautiful Mercedes Sprinter Limo Bus which sat us 9 perfectly and our driver Kurt was amazing !! Professional, helpful, polite and went above and beyond to help make our day so wonderful. I would really like to thank Napa Valley Wine Country Tours for the absolute best service and they scheduled us excellent places to go and Kurt (the driver) was ON IT. Super professional. I highly highly highly recommend them. Excellent 100%.

Abe is the funniest driver we've had. Good deal for having a DD and the wine was amazing. The first stop on the tour was my favorite and most affordable. Second stop was good, third spot was pretty pricey

James was our fantastic driver for the day! He picked us up from Burlingame to go to Bouchaine Vineyards and we made a stop in Oakland at a commercial business on the way. Easy to communicate with and even provided refreshments on board while allowing us to connect our phones to listen to music on the drive. 30 minutes before pick up, he would send a courtesy text and was right on time. He was extremely nice and was a very safe driver, I hope we can book James again in the future! :)

Thank you for hosting our group of 25 yesterday for wine tasting! David was our driver and was very personable and funny as well as keeping us on track as we had a tight tasting schedule. Would definitely recommend Napa Valley Wine Country Tours for any time we are back in Napa!

I've utilized their services twice now and couldn't be happier. The first time around, a group of 17 of us rented a limo style bus with George as our driver. We were picked up at the location of our choice and it was smooth sailing from there. You could definitely ask the company to make you an itinerary or give suggestions. I decided to have my own go at certain spots. We had 4 wineries and 1 restaurant lined up. George was extremely flexible but also ensured that we stayed on schedule for our appointments. We even requested to make a last minute stop at bouchon bakery and he had zero problem in doing so. Excellent driver with a personality that all my gals loved! On our 2nd go around, we had a smaller limo sprinter which was perfect for the 9 of us. We had David as our driver. Also very friendly and flexible. This time, we left the itinerary up to them and we were delightfully surprised and happy with the choices. Prices are very reasonable. 5 solid stars and definitely requesting George or David again in the future.

New napa luxury wine hillside experience with shafer hillside select.

The New Shafer HIllside Select Experience in the Vineyard, Napa Valley

Napa Valley’s famous Shafer Hillside Select wine has been reaping top reviews for more than 40 years now, but this is the first time Shafer Vineyards has created a new experience that allows visitors to tour the legendary hillside vineyard.

“The Shafer Hillside Select wine is only made from the best vineyard blocks on the steep hillside behind the winery, and is always 100% cabernet sauvignon,” explained Elias Fernandez, Shafer winemaker since 1994.

The wine was actually produced as early as 1978 and called Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon , but by 1983 founder, John Shafer and his son, Doug Shafer, realized that the cabernet sauvignon grapes coming from select blocks on the hillside were exceptional. Therefore, they created this special cuvee and called it Shafer Hillside Select .

The current release is the 2019 Shafer Hillside Select (the wine is aged 32 months in 100% new French oak before release), and immediately received 98 point scores from both Wine Advocate and Jeb Dunnuck . The release price was $375 per bottle, but the wine is allocated and only available to mailing list members.

Experiencing the New Hillside Select Tour

Recently I had a chance to explore this unique new experience, and when I arrived at the winery, I was greeted by Ilse Mapes, Hospitality Director, and Andy Demsky, Communications Director.

Ghost Of Tsushima Is Already Flooded With Negative Reviews On Steam

‘this is a big deal’—congress suddenly hurtling toward a ‘crucial’ crypto vote that could blow up the price of bitcoin, ethereum and xrp, netflix s best new overlooked action movie is a must watch.

“We have just launched this new experience because for years visitors have been asking to explore the vineyards,” explained Ilse. However, due to the steep volcanic hillside of the Stag’s Leap District with its towering volcanic chimneys that rise dramatically over the vines, the winery had to establish safe pathways and a look-out terrace first.

The experience begins in a private room with glass walls overlooking the valley below. Guests are greeted with a chilled glass of Billcart Salmon Champagne and a generous helping of Regiis Ova black caviar on potato crisps. During this relaxed and welcoming interlude visitors can view the vineyard map with the different blocks that make up Hillside Select.

The next phase is a thrilling ride on a Polaris Ranger vehicle, which slowly winds through the twists and turns of the gravel path up and into the hillside vineyard behind the winery. Along the way, visitors learn about the sustainable and regenerative practices that are used to farm, including cover crops, water conservation, no soil tilling, and use of 100% solar power for the winery.

“We have a resident pair of red tail hawks that nest on the property and they just had a baby,” said Ilse. And, as if on cue, two magnificent hawks came sailing over the vines, followed by a baby hawk doing aerial flips as he (or she) enjoyed testing out their new wings.

However, one of the sustainability practices that Shafer is most well-known for is the flock of sheep that they bring into the vineyard each spring to ‘mow’ the grass and provide natural fertilizer.

“The flock arrives with their own Peruvian shepherds and great Pyrenees sheep dogs each March and stay for about a month,” explained Andy Demsky. The company that provides the sheep is called Kaos Sheep Outfit , and Andy said that during the pandemic, a 6-hour video he produced of the sheep eating grass in the vineyards went viral.

“I think that during the pandemic people wanted to see nature, and there was something about the sheep eating grass in the vineyard that was calming and reassuring,” he said. See the video on YouTube below, with more than 460,000 views to date.

Once the Polaris reached a plateau halfway up the hillside, a large rock terrace appeared. In the center was a table where Ilse uncorked a bottle of the latest Shafer Hillside select wine – the 2019 vintage.

It was delightful sipping the delicious wine while standing on the very hillside that birthed the grapes. Rich flavors of cassis, black cherry, and cedar came first, followed by hints of violets, tobacco and black tea leaves, all wrapped in a plush mouthfeel of soft velvety tannins. I found it to be reminiscent of a Margaux Grand Cru, with richness and elegance.

As we relaxed on the hillside terrace, we learned more about the history of the estate, before slowly driving back to the winery for the third part of the 90 minute experience. This comprised an in depth private tasting of three rare library bottles of Hillside Select, along with a clever charcuterie board for each guest.

For this tasting, we enjoyed the 2012, 2006, and 1999 vintages, and it was amazing to taste the evolution of the wines as they aged into even more complex and hedonistic delights.

Shafer Hillside Select Wines - Multiple Library Vintages

The complete Hillside Select Experience is only offered twice a week during the Spring, Summer, and Autumn months and is $500 per person. Shafer Vineyards offers two other 90-minute experiences: the Terrace View Tasting for $125 per guest and the Private Collector’s Experience for $195 per guest.

Other wines crafted at Shafer Vineyards, in addition to the legendary Hillside Select, include Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, TD-9 Cabernet Sauvignon, 1.5 Cabernet Sauvignon, and Relentless Syrah.

Winemaker, Elias Fernandez, Celebrates 40 Years at Shafer Vineyards

Though winemaker, Elias Fernandez, is not part of the experience, visitors may bump into him on the property as I did. This year he is celebrating his 40 th anniversary with Shafer Vineyards.

When asked, Elias was very happy to share more information about the actual blocks that went into the 2019, and how he selected them.

“The grapes from the Sunspot block are always part of Hillside Select because of their prime location on the hillside,” explained Elias. “As for the rest of the blocks, I find that the vines speak to you when you know their language.”

And Elias should know the language of grapes, because he grew up in Napa Valley and attended U.C. Davis before Doug Shafer offered him the job as assistant winemaker in 1984. Elias moved into the top winemaker position in 1994 when Doug was promoted to winery President.

Welcome to VERANDA's Perfect Weekend , where we show you how to make the most of 48 hours in one of our favorite destinations. This month, we’re Napa-bound to relax and unwind in one of the world’s premier wine-growing regions. Renowned for its vine-covered rolling hills and the exquisite wine that’s a result of the labored landscape, Napa is the ultimate U.S. destination for wine lovers—but make no mistake, the valley has so much more to offer than delicious bottles of vino.

From a shocking number of Michelin-rated and -starred restaurants and beautiful architecture in the form of tasting rooms to lavish spas nestled among the valley’s verdant landscape and a recently re-developed downtown that cost a whopping $30 million to bring to life, Napa has it all. But be warned: With so much to do in the valley, a quick weekend trip may feel like a tease. Nevertheless, keep reading to learn how to have the perfect weekend in Napa. By the end of it, we have a sneaking suspicion that you’ll be eager to book your next visit.

<p>To make the absolute most of your weekend in Napa, we suggest getting an early start. To kick things off, check into <a href="https://aubergeresorts.com/aubergedusoleil/">Auberge Du Soleil</a>—considered to be Napa’s most luxurious resort—a Provence-inspired chateau outfitted with private maisons. </p><p>Once settled, lean into the allure of wine country with your first tasting. While some tasting rooms and wineries take walk-ins, it’s best to make reservations or set up appointments prior to arrival. Take <a href="https://www.dakotashywine.com/">Dakota Shy Winery</a>—a beautiful estate just down the road from Auberge Du Soleil—for example. The ivy-covered boutique winery—which is founded upon the ethos of hard work, commitment, and determination—welcomes visitors by appointment only. The beauty of this is that your first sips in Napa will be not only more personal, but also more educational as you’ll be able to converse freely with the winemakers about the entire process. </p><p>Another thing you may want to think about before setting foot in Napa? How you plan to get around. While Uber and Lyft are available, cars can take a while to show up and can be more difficult to find after 8 p.m. Because of this, we (along with many people we talked to) suggest booking a private driver for your time in Napa (<a href="https://nvtt.net/">Napa Valley Tours</a> is one of the top picks among both locals and tourists.). While undoubtedly expensive, the ease of getting from point A to point B and the assurance of not missing a reservation make it well worth the investment. </p>
