Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The first iteration of the more-basic cruise control system in older Toyota models helps the vehicle maintain a steady speed, ideal for highway cruising.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle in front, especially when the latter slows down.

When the vehicle ahead changes lanes or accelerates, the ACC will return your car to the speed you set.

Newer Toyotas have Toyota Safety Sense, a bundle of active safety features which include dynamic radar cruise control.

The following rival makes also have popular models with ACC:

  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .
  • Ford vehicles with ACC .

Where Is Cruise Control On Toyota Yaris?

Selecting the cruise on/off buttons on your car will start the cruise control system. The controls are typically positioned on the turn signal lever or the steering wheel itself.

In This Article...

Has the 2018 Toyota Yaris get cruise control?

Toyota is aware that it is much simpler to build a dependable car with tried-and-true components than to attempt to ride the cutting edge. Although sometimes necessary, that philosophy has been overused in the Yaris. It appears to be years behind its rivals and other Toyotas.

Good little automobiles have experienced a revival during the last five to ten years. Newer models of the Honda Fit, Kia Rio, Ford Fiesta, and others illustrate that we can now manufacture desirable, well-rounded automobiles at an affordable price, despite the fact that they were frequently perceived as poorly built, unrefined cars for those who couldn’t buy something better.

For less than $19,335 each, the Corolla, Corolla iM, and Yaris iA feel like real contemporary automobiles with contemporary refinement.

I could overlook the harsh plastics everywhere because the class pricing necessitates the use of certain inexpensive materials, but most rivals at least attempt to give the interior a pleasing aesthetic with a few pieces of glossy trim or brightwork. Not so in this case, where the infotainment looks pasted in and there are large seams everywhere where panels were installed.

It also includes a rather peculiar collection of tools. Every Yaris comes with automatic high beams as standard equipment, but automated lights are not available. Given that installing automatic high beams is more difficult and expensive, that seems odd. The Toyota Entune infotainment system, which has been a pain to use since it began, is included in the basic versions, but cruise control is not.

Additionally, only high-end versions are equipped with an immobilizer, which assures that the engine won’t start if the key’s chip isn’t recognized. Its addition is practically free because it is basic anti-theft equipment.

The Yaris makes me lose all fondness for its manual transmission thanks to a clunky, ambiguous shifter and only five forward ratios. Even in this low-power class, the 106 horsepower produced by the 1.5-liter engine is pitiful. Additionally, it uses a loud and crude method of delivering its meager power. While the floaty handling doesn’t quite match the bouncy ride, road and wind noise may be heard inside the cabin.

The Toyota Yaris from 2019 has cruise control, right?

In a recent press release, Toyota announced its plan to replace the Toyota Yaris iA with merely a regular Toyota Yaris in the existing lineup. The Toyota Yaris and Yaris iA will be combined to become the 2019 Toyota Yaris, but with a few nice additions to tie everything together. For more information, keep reading!

Toyota Yaris Features and Trim Levels

The new 2019 Toyota Yaris will come in three trim levels, L, LE, and XLE, as opposed to the previous Toyota Yaris iA’s single trim level. Numerous great features are available on all of these model levels, including as a cruise control, rearview camera, and 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. These features are all included as standard equipment in every model.

Another wonderful standard feature for a car at this budget is the low-speed pre-collision system, but if you want adaptive cruise control or blind-spot monitoring, you’ll need to seek elsewhere. Whether Apple CarPlayTM or Android AutoTM will be offered, as they were in the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, is unknown.

Toyota Yaris Exterior Changes

With the exception of a fantastic new honeycomb feature in the grille and a piano black and chrome trim, the 2019 Toyota Yaris largely retains its previous appearance. 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, and outside heated mirrors with LED turn signals are standard on the LE and XLE trim levels. The exterior of the new 2019 Toyota Yaris is elevated by all these fantastic features.

Although the price of the 2019 Toyota Yaris has not yet been disclosed, it is anticipated to be in the same range as the outgoing model, which starts at $15,950. Expect to see the new Toyota Yaris shortly; it will probably arrive in showrooms in the fall of 2018!

How does the cruise control icon appear?

The controls needed to operate it are often located on the steering wheel or one of the car’s indicator stalks.

You’ll frequently need to depress a button labelled with the cruise control icon, which is a speedometer symbol with an arrow pointing in a specific direction (seen on the stalk below).

The following buttons are typically used to activate cruise control:

Cancel Instead of the off switch, there should be a button that just pauses the system, in case you get stopped behind a slower vehicle. The similar effect is produced by pressing the brake pedal.

Resume or Res After pausing the cruise control, press here to resume it. The vehicle will resume moving at the predetermined pace.

Up and Down, plus and minus These change the preset speed of the cruise control. You can hit the minus button to slow down, for instance, if you’re on a highway and come to a set of roadworks with a lower speed restriction.

Using the brake pedal will immediately pause the system and cause the car to slow down just as if the system were turned off, allowing you to override cruise control whenever necessary. The speed of the car will rise if the accelerator is pressed. The cruise control typically stays on when you release the gas pedal and brings the vehicle back to its predetermined pace.

How does cruise control work?

Each vehicle model’s cruise control differs differently, however the majority of systems function quite similarly. Start cruising by following these 5 steps:

1. Increase your speed: Cruise control is best used on a freeway or dual carriageway where you can maintain a consistent pace of at least 30 mph without stopping frequently.

2. Turn on cruise control: Once you are traveling at the speed you want to be (while staying inside the posted limit), activate the cruise control system. The controls for it often sit on or behind the steering wheel, and when it’s turned on, a light will be seen on your dashboard.

It’s important to identify the buttons before using cruise control for the first time in order to avoid fumbling around while driving and potentially dangerous situations.

3. Set the cruise control: Press the set button after turning on the system. Your car will receive this communication and maintain the present speed. The dashboard indicator will turn green in the majority of cars as a result. Once the cruise control is in place, you can let up on the gas and the vehicle should continue to go at the same speed.

4. To accelerate: To increase the vehicle’s speed, most cars have a “up” arrow or “+” button. The system will typically be overridden if the accelerator pedal is depressed.

5. To slow down, either use the brake pedal or the down arrow on the cruise control system. As soon as the brake is engaged, the cruise control will turn off for safety reasons.

The “cancel” button has several functions, including pausing cruise control so you may regain full control without the system completely turning off. The speed you chose to cruise at should be maintained.

How is a Toyota cruise used?

There are more buttons and gadgets in our cars than we sometimes know what to do with. How to operate the cruise control on a Toyota is one of the features that drivers inquire about most frequently. Fortunately, the procedures are simple and will improve the effectiveness and regularity of long distance travel.

Instructions for using Toyota cruise control

With the stock located on the right side of the driver’s steering wheel, cruise control can be activated. Additionally, indicators that reflect whether cruise control is engaged and the selected speed are displayed on the Toyota’s Multi-Information Display (MID).

  • Push the ON/OFF button on the stock in order to turn the system on.
  • On MID, the cruise control icon will appear.
  • Boost or brake to the desired speed.
  • To set speed, press the stock down.
  • On MID, a set indicator will appear.
  • Press stock up to accelerate in one-mile increments to boost speed.
  • Hold the stock up continually while you accelerate in bigger steps.
  • To adjust speed, release the stock.
  • By pressing the stock down, you can slow down in one-mile increments.
  • Hold down the stock continually to reduce speed in larger steps.
  • Pull the stock in your direction or apply the brakes to turn off the cruise control.

How can I tell if the cruise control on my car is on?

First, assess the highway’s driving conditions. Inclement weather is not intended for usage with cruise control. When determining whether to use your car’s cruise control, use caution. Before engaging cruise control, especially if it is your first time using the device, make sure there are no impending obstructions.

  • Even if the road appears to be empty, it would be a bad idea to use cruise control in such weather.

Increase your speed. The legal limit for traveling on an interstate is often between 55 and 70 miles per hour. The cruise control speed range is great. Never try to increase the cruise control speed on your car past the speed limit. This is reckless and dangerous.

Turn on cruise control once you’ve reached the appropriate speed. The cruise control system’s buttons are often found on the steering wheel in cars. To prevent an accident, identify these buttons by consulting your owner’s manual when the automobile is not in use.

The mechanism is often activated by pushing a larger button labeled “cruise.”

Set the cruise control after the cruise control system has been turned on. Most likely, this will only involve pressing another steering-wheel button. You can take your foot off the accelerator after you’ve set the cruise control. The vehicle must maintain its speed.

Keep a close eye on the road when operating a vehicle that is being accelerated by a cruise control system. You will need to turn off cruise control before you slow down or stop, which will cause a delay in your reaction time.

Most models either feature additional buttons or let the driver temporarily press the accelerator pedal while in cruise control.

Either hit the corresponding cruise control system button or swiftly press the brake to slow down. Almost all car models automatically deactivate the cruise control as soon as the brake is applied as a safety measure.

When driving on the interstate, using cruise control is a terrific method to manage your speed. By avoiding abrupt accelerations and decelerations, setting your vehicle’s cruise control to a suitable speed will also cut down on fuel use. Be warned that if you are prone to driving fatigue, it is not a good idea to utilize cruise control. Many motorists believe that being able to unwind their legs while driving and not having to pay strict attention to their speed increases the risk of driver tiredness.

Here is a video explaining adaptive cruise control, which is a precursor to autonomous vehicles and is becoming more and more common in new cars every year:

Tested: 2019 Toyota Yaris Shines in Its Class

Toyota's budget sedan provides driving fun and an upscale interior.

land vehicle, vehicle, car, automotive design, motor vehicle, mid size car, ford motor company, hatchback, ford, compact car,

The Yaris is not the market's most affordable car —that honor belongs to the Nissan Versa . But it is Toyota 's entry-level product and also one of Toyota's three models shared with other brands, the others being the 86 and Supra sports cars, which were co-developed with Subaru and BMW. The Yaris is almost entirely a Mazda 2 with a lightly restyled front end. The partnership seems to be working, as the Yaris has made it through two name changes over five years, first debuting for 2016 as the Scion iA and then transitioning to the Yaris iA in 2017 after Scion's dissolution. Its latest designation positions the Yaris to sell both as the current sedan and as a hatchback starting in 2020 .

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Steering wheel, Center console, Mode of transport, Automotive design, Gear shift, Mazda, Steering part,

Although it lost two letters for 2019, the Yaris gained two trim levels and is now available in L, LE, and XLE guise. Starting at $16,530, the Yaris L is a fantastic bargain, offering standard air conditioning, cruise control, two USB ports, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with a redundant rotary controller knob, satellite radio, six speakers, six airbags, forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, steering-wheel radio controls, and complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles. Our XLE tester turned up the charm with a combo of faux and real leather inside, leather interior trim, automatic climate control, attractive 16-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, LED headlights, and rain-sensing wipers. All of this for a modest $19,470. Our only complaint is that the XLE can only be had with a six-speed automatic transmission; a six-speed manual saves $1100 on lower trims.

Beyond the build sheet, the Yaris's interior strikes a pleasant balance between stark and overstyled. Blue stitching and soft-touch materials significantly distance the Yaris from the penalty-box interiors typically found in this price class. Some cost-cutting measures were clearly made behind the scenes as evidenced by prevalent road noise. The back seat and trunk also are a bit stingy on space. For maximum volume in this class, see the Honda Fit . The largest demerit inside the Yaris is the absence of a center armrest. A full center console would be welcome, but without so much as a flip-down support the driver's right arm hangs uncomfortably limp. It is the only piece out of place in an otherwise well-designed cockpit.

Fortunately, there's pleasure to be had in keeping both hands on the wheel. While its affordable pricing and premium materials are significant, what cements the Yaris as our favorite subcompact is its driving verve. Despite the car's unimpressive 191-foot stop from 70 mph and 0.84 g of lateral grip around the skidpad, its well-weighted steering and composed chassis work together to provide a playful and competent feel on the road. Less playful is the engine, a wee 1.5-liter inline-four that produces only 106 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque. That means that, even though it carries around just 2458 pounds, the Yaris needs 9.6 seconds to reach 60 mph and a lazy 17.4 seconds to cover the quarter-mile. Toggling the transmission's Sport mode or shifting it manually is necessary for any spirited behavior, but once you get up to speed the Yaris is a treat to pilot. And it comes standard with a digital clock.

LOWS: Unsettling front-end design, cabin noise at highway speeds, no center armrest.

Edmunds' Expert Review

cruise control toyota yaris 2019

  • Lots of appealing standard features at a reasonable price
  • Attractive interior fitted with upscale materials
  • High fuel economy
  • Unequaled handling performance for the class
  • Acceleration is slow even for the subcompact segment
  • Taller drivers might have a hard time getting comfortable
  • Sporty suspension comes at the cost of road comfort
  • Limited cargo and interior space

What's new

  • Last year's Yaris iA has been renamed to just Yaris
  • Sedan body style only
  • New front and rear styling treatments
  • Three trim levels are now available: L, LE and XLE

What is the 2019 Toyota Yaris? That seems like a simple question, but the answer is anything but. We'll do our best to keep things simple. First, the vehicle we're reviewing here is a four-door sedan, which in past years was known as the Yaris iA. Last year's plain-old Yaris, no iA, was a four-door hatchback.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2019 Toyota Yaris L 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl 6M) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

So in simple terms, "Yaris" equals sedan now. Great, but the confusion doesn't end there since this Toyota is in fact designed, engineered and manufactured by Mazda. That means it's different from other vehicles in Toyota's lineup, from the way it drives to the way you change the radio. But that shouldn't be considered a bad thing. Mazda has proven itself rather adept at building small cars, especially ones that are engaging and fun to drive.

The Mazda DNA isn't just limited to the mechanical bits either. The Yaris cabin inherits Mazda's attractive interior styling and thoughtful ergonomics. It's actually a much nicer environment than what you get in the Toyota-designed and -built Yaris Liftback. For its part, though, Toyota has included many features as standard on the Yaris, even on the lowest L trim, that many manufacturers only include as options.

While the Yaris might be surprisingly fun to drive, it is not particularly fast, even in a class where slow is the accepted norm. Other knocks against the Yaris include the slightly cramped back seat that doesn't fold completely flat and makes for an uneven load floor for longer objects. Still, we think the 2019 Yaris should be at the top of the must-drive list for anyone in search of an affordable subcompact sedan — no matter who makes it or what it's named.

Edmunds' Expert Rating

Trim tested.

The Toyota Yaris is the most fun you'll have in a slow car. Its main strengths rest in its superbly playful handling and excellent transmission. We also really enjoy the response and quickness of the steering during spirited driving stints. What the Yaris doesn't deliver is much straight-line speed. Its 1.5-liter engine makes a meager 106 horsepower, which will have you flooring the gas pedal frequently to get up to highway speeds. We measured its run up to 60 mph at a tick over 10 seconds. That's slow, even for the economy class.

And while its low-grip tires are fun when you're wanting to flick it around corners, they don't help stop the Yaris as quickly as others in the class.

It's a tough task to design comfort into a vehicle this small, and the Yaris is no exception. The seats offer above-average lateral support for steadying you through turns, but they lack lumbar support for the everyday commute. Ride comfort has taken a back seat to handling performance, which means you'll feel bumps and road texture more than you might want to.

We found the single-zone climate control system easy to use and fairly effective at keeping the cabin cool despite the lack of rear vents. Its steady stream of noise, both wind and road, is common for the class. There are no vibrations or creaks, though, which is admirable for an economy car.

Simplicity has its benefits. The Yaris subscribes to that philosophy, and all the controls are quite easy to learn and use. There's good adjustability in the driver's seat to accommodate a wide range of body types, though don't expect to sit behind anybody taller than 6 feet. Space, as with other vehicles in this class, is at a premium, and there isn't much of it in the Yaris' cabin. Nor does the Yaris try to make the space feel larger than it is.

Getting in and out of the front is mostly easy, but the back seat requires a degree of limberness that most won't want to deal with every day. Visibility is no better or worse in the Yaris than other vehicles in this class, which is to say there aren't any significant issues.

For such a tiny car, the 13.5-cubic-foot trunk space manages to be pretty comparable to class leaders. The 60/40-split fold rear seats don't quite fold flat, creating about a 5-inch ledge between the cargo area and folded seatbacks. There's a lack of storage space for items in the cabin, at least if you don't want them visible to the outside world. Where the center armrest would be is where the cupholders are, so the only covered space is the small glovebox.

Though not uncommon for the class, the Yaris will not accommodate a rear-facing seat safely so any other passengers will have to give up that prime shotgun location. The car seat anchors are buried a little deep into the seatbacks, but it wasn't too hard to install our car seat.

Our test car didn't come with the optional navigation system, but we've found the system to be fairly easy to use in other vehicles. The standard audio system produces a surprisingly clean sound that doesn't distort even at a higher volume. Smartphone integration is a bit lacking since Android Auto isn't offered and Apple CarPlay isn't available until the 2020 Yaris model year. There are two USBs and a 12-volt outlet to provide charging for your devices, and Bluetooth paired quickly.

The Yaris is also lacking in advanced driver aids. You won't find Toyota Safety Sense here, just a low-speed front collision warning/mitigation system that only works below 18 mph.

Which Yaris does Edmunds recommend?

2019 toyota yaris models.

The entry-level L comes with 15-inch steel wheels, forward collision warning, low-speed automatic emergency braking, a rearview camera, full power accessories (lock, mirrors, windows), cruise control, air conditioning, a height-adjustable driver's seat, cloth upholstery, Mazda's infotainment system (center console controller, a 7-inch display that responds to touch when the car is stopped), voice recognition, Bluetooth, two USB ports, an auxiliary audio jack, HD and satellite radio, and a six-speaker sound system.

Stepping up to the LE gets you 16-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a rear spoiler, heated outside mirrors, LED turn signals, and keyless ignition and entry.

The XLE loses the option of the manual transmission but gains automatic LED headlights, automatic wipers, automatic climate control, simulated leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and two drive settings (Normal and Sport).

2017-2019 Toyota Yaris review

The diminutive toyota yaris hatch is light and easy to drive in an urban environment, and has an enviable reputation for reliability. auto braking is available..

2017 Toyota Yaris ZR

Things we like

  • Deserved reputation for reliability
  • Auto braking available

Not so much

  • Relatively low fun factor

What stands out?

The diminutive third-generation Toyota Yaris hatch is easy to drive and park in an urban environment and has an enviable reputation for reliability. Autonomous emergency braking is available in some later versions.

What might bug me?

You may find that you can’t quite get comfy behind the wheel. Even though the steering column adjusts for angle and reach, and the seat adjusts for height, it can be hard to find a driving position that feels right.

What body styles are there?

Five-door hatchback only.

The Toyota Yaris drives its front wheels, and it is classed as a light car, lower priced.

What features did every Toyota Yaris have?

Air-conditioning, power windows, and power-adjusted door mirrors.

Cruise control and reversing camera.

Bluetooth connectivity for phones and audio streaming. An audio system with USB and auxiliary input sockets, an AM/FM radio, a CD player, and at least six speakers, controllable from a 6.1-inch touchscreen display.

Height adjustment for the driver’s seat. Height and reach adjustment for the steering wheel, from which you can operate the audio system, the cruise control, and your phone (via Bluetooth).

A space-saver temporary spare wheel (which is speed-restricted).

Seven airbags. Electronic stability control, which can help you control a skidding car and is mandatory on new cars. (For the placement of airbags, and more on Yaris safety systems, please open the Safety section below.)

The Toyota Yaris was covered by a three-year 100,000km warranty until January 2019, when Toyota extended its coverage to five years with no limited on kilometres driven.

Which engine uses least fuel, and why wouldn't I choose it?

The 1.3-litre petrol four-cylinder engine found in the least costly Yaris, the Ascent, is marginally the more fuel-efficient of the two Yaris engines. It uses 5.7 litres/100km with the five-speed manual gearbox, and 6.3 litres/100km with the four-speed automatic, on official test figures.

In a real world comparison conducted for the March 2015 issue of Wheels magazine, a Yaris Ascent auto with this engine averaged 8.1 litres/100km - about a litre more than the most economical of the nine light hatchbacks reviewed.

There are two reasons why you might not choose the 1.3-litre engine. One is that it is available only in the Ascent.

The other is that the slightly bigger, 1.5-litre petrol found in every other Yaris is noticeably more powerful, while using barely any more fuel.

In fact, real-world testing has shown the four-cylinder 1.5 to use less fuel than the 1.3 in some conditions.

Both engines are available with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed auto. (The most expensive Yaris, the ZR, offers auto transmission only.)

What key features do I get if I spend more?

The least costly Yaris, the Ascent, comes with the less responsive, 1.3-litre, engine, 15-inch steel wheels with plastic trim, manually controlled air-conditioning, and cloth-covered seats.

Spend more for a Yaris SX and you get a nicer-feeling steering wheel and the bigger and better, 1.5-litre, engine, satellite navigation and front fog lights.

Spending a good deal more for a Yaris ZR brings you wheels made from aluminium alloy (which look good without pesky trim caps), and automatic transmission as standard. You also get air-conditioning that maintains a set temperature, and brighter, very long-lasting, LED headlights. Sports front seats grip you more firmly.

In addition, the ZR comes with an active-safety suite under the description Toyota Safety Sense. It brings you autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and an auto-dipping function for the headlights.

On any Yaris Ascent or SX, you can add Toyota Safety Sense as an option (for about $650).

Does any upgrade have a down side?

No. Even the ride is unaffected as you move up the price range, as the Yaris ZR uses tyres of the same size and profile as those on the other cars.

Ten colours are available; for seven of them you will be charged about $450 on top of the standard price.

How comfortable is the Yaris?

The Yaris is comfortable from a seating point of view. The standard front seats look plain but offer surprising support for drives of an hour or two. A facelift of March 2017 that adjusted the exterior styling also lifted the look of the cabin a little.

Despite a steering column that adjusts for angle and reach, the ergonomics are not as good in the Yaris as they are in some alternative city cars – it can be difficult for the driver to find a position that’s just right.

The 1.3-litre Ascent feels lively off the mark even in auto form and does the job around town, but needs a determined right foot at highway speeds and particularly on hilly routes in the country.

On bumpy roads you ride less comfortably in a Yaris than in many other hatchbacks its size. The suspension is fidgety, and road, tyre and engine noise intrude into the cabin, especially on rough rural surfaces or poorly repaired urban streets.

What about safety in a Yaris?

Every Yaris comes with stability control, seven airbags and a reversing camera. An emergency brake signal flashes the brake lights during heavy braking, helping other drivers notice you’re stopping sharply.

There are two airbags directly in front of the driver and front passenger; one alongside each front occupant to protect the upper body; a curtain airbag on each side protecting the heads of front and rear passengers from side impacts; and an airbag to protect the driver’s knees.

Standard on the Yaris ZR, and optional on any other Yaris, is an active safety suite called Toyota Safety Sense. It comprises auto emergency braking, lane departure warning, and self-dipping headlamps.

Auto braking on the Yaris relies on laser and camera sensors (mounted on the windscreen), and is effective at speeds up to 80km/h. The sensors scan the road ahead for obstacles – typically another car that has slowed suddenly. If the system recognises a collision risk, it will warn you; if you don’t react, it will apply the brakes automatically. The idea is to make it less likely you will crash into someone in front, either because you were distracted or because they braked unexpectedly.

The lane departure warning uses the camera to monitor road markings, and alerts you if you have begun to drift out of your lane – perhaps from inattention or fatigue. It operates at speeds above 50km/h.

The self-dipping function switches your headlamps to low beam automatically to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers or people you’re following. It returns to high beam when that’s safe.

The noise, vibration and harshness that filter into the Yaris’s cabin contribute to driver fatigue on long trips.

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has awarded the Yaris hatchback its maximum five stars for safety, most recently in December 2011.

I like driving - will I enjoy this car?

Quite possibly not. Despite its popularity, the Yaris remains one of the less enjoyable light cars to drive (its popularity is the result of more pragmatic factors).

Its four-speed automatic and five-speed manual transmissions are a gear or two short of the best in cars of its size. This means the Yaris has less real-world pulling power in the lower gears, while the engine will rev higher and be noisier in the upper gears.

The bigger, 1.5-litre engine feels more powerful than the 1.3 and performs better on the open road, but it doesn’t make an especially pleasant sound, even by the modest standards of this class of car.

The Yaris’s steering is light and responds with reasonable precision, but it does not give you much sense of connection with the road. The front of the car doesn’t turn into corners as crisply as alternatives such as the Mazda 2, Renault Clio and Ford Fiesta.

How is life in the rear seats?

The bench rear seat is roomier than it looks. It is comfortable for up to three adults over short trips, and handy for small children. Just as in the front of the Yaris – perhaps even more so – it is noisy in the rear of the cabin by comparison with most rivals.

How is it for carrying stuff?

Toyota quotes cargo capacity at 286 litres, which is very competitive – more than in a Mazda2, and a match for the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, for example. The rear seat back folds 60-40 to expand this capacity to 768 litres.

Best practice with split-fold seats is to place the narrower seatback behind the front passenger’s seat, so that you might carry a long item of luggage along the left hand side of the cabin, leaving the broader seatback for a passenger behind the driver. The Yaris orients its seatbacks the other way around, although it’s not alone in doing so.

Where was the third-generation Yaris made?

The Toyota Yaris was built in Japan.

What might I miss that similar aged cars have?

All Yaris engines and gearboxes date back a decade, and most alternatives perform better and are more fuel-efficient. A facelift in March 2017 did not improve the car as a drive.

Turbocharged light cars such as the Renault Clio and Volkswagen Polo respond more eagerly to the accelerator pedal – particularly from low speeds. Many non-turbo alternatives also offer better response during everyday driving (especially those with six-speed gearboxes or a CVT), despite similar engine outputs on paper.

Some city cars – among them the Volkswagen Polo and Kia Rio, and the smaller Holden Spark and Kia Picanto – help you get more from your smartphone, by enabling Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. These let you display navigation and other apps from a compatible phone on the car’s touchscreen, and control them from there.

Other light cars worth considering include the Mazda2, Honda Jazz and Suzuki Swift.

I like this car, but I can't choose which version. Can you help?

The Toyota Yaris SX is our pick of the line-up, for its more responsive 1.5-litre petrol engine. Consider getting one with the Toyota Safety Sense option, which reduces your risk of an embarrassing and expensive rear-end crash in traffic.

How old is the Yaris? Are there plans to update it soon?

The third-generation Yaris was launched in 2011, and a revised series-two version arrived late in 2014.

About March 2017 Toyota ceased selling the Yaris sedan and gave the hatchback a mild facelift, making autonomous emergency braking available.

In January 2019 the Yaris' three-year/100,000km warranty was extended to five years/unlimited kilometres along with all other Toyota models.

A new generation Yaris arrives in May 2020 with class-leading safety technology and hybrid option. If you're thinking of buying a new Yaris it's probably worth waiting for unless you're after a good runout deal on the current model.

Make sure it's all wired including the clutch switch then test, normally the 1.0 will be missing the wire from the multi plug (up under the dash) to the ecu

i will have a look but i don't think i have the diagram for a yaris this new

Thanks

Do you have a diagram ?

Its connector A58, Pin 36  Pin 33 is the TC for the DLC

2017 onwards

Sorry but what's TC for the DLC mean ?

And what's the difference between 35 an 36 pin ?

CCS and ECCS ?

If i found that pin is exist, then i shoud reprogram my ecu ? Thank you

The second pin is the ground related to that circuit so pin 35 is the ground for pin 36

DLC is Data Link Connector aka OBD2 - TC and GC is used for specific diagnostics

So when i connect the cruise control

I should using 35pin as a groud ? I should connect 2 wires to the ECU ?

Just check to see if 36 is wired

36 is wired with black wire

35 is not wired

I found 12 volt in this brown wire into the steering wheel, the groud from the body

I've check the next brown wire to found 12 volt , i didn't found any result with the first brown wire

I've install the stalk :

the red wire from the stalk to the first brown wire

The black wire from the stalk to the body

I turn ignition on and i press "on" in the stalk , but no result

The stalk after testing show me many different value

Does the 12V change when you push the buttons

Cruise button ?

I remove the multimeter when i insert the stalk

1 hour ago, flash22 said: Does the 12V change when you push the buttons

I think that the ground must be from the engine control (pin 35)
