Your adventure begins with an early morning departure from Lima. You’ll head south for about 3.5 hours to reach Paracas, a beautiful coastal town. Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious breakfast before setting off to explore the Islas Ballestas.

Hotel to Hotel service

Regarding the transportation provided by Alpaca Expeditions, we are committed to delivering a quality service. We strive to ensure that passengers feel supported throughout their journey. To achieve this, we coordinate closely with our guides and representatives to ensure timely pick-up at the start of their tours. Additionally, we have representatives responsible for escorting our passengers to their hotels at the conclusion of any tour.

Our drivers are not only trained in customer service but also come properly uniformed, and many are fluent in English.

Typically, all transportation types are included in each of our services. For instance, if you have booked a trekking tour, we will pick you up early, typically between 4 AM and 5 AM. When visiting Cusco, it's important to note that traffic here is generally moderate. However, there are peak traffic times, such as between 7 AM and 8 AM, which coincide with school hours, and in the evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Therefore, if you have a flight during these times, it's crucial to be at the airport at least 2 hours in advance. The drivers of Alpaca Expeditions ensure their vehicles are prepared with all necessities before each service. They are acutely aware that delays can lead to missed trains, flights, or other connections. Consequently, they are always more than punctual, arriving at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time for any service, understanding the responsibility they carry in executing these tasks.

Personal Porter of 7KG

Remember that Alpaca Expeditions offers an extra 7 kg allowance for your personal belongings on any of our tours. We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag without any additional fee. You will not have access to your duffel bag until you reach your evening campsite. The bag should not exceed 7 kg, which includes 4 kg for clothes and 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

Each Alpaca Expeditions porter is paid directly after each trek, allowing them to return home more quickly. They receive better wages than our competitors, health insurance, and all their equipment free of charge, including hiking boots, pants, jerseys, fleeces, jackets, hats, flashlights, sleeping bags, and high-quality food. We ensure each of our porters has a comfortable bed in a pleasant room to sleep in before and after each trek. We also visit the communities they live in, providing toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and other necessary supplies to their families, along with books for their children.

This is just the beginning for us, and we are always looking for ways to do more. While the government allows each porter to carry up to 25 kg, we limit this to 20 kg to prioritize their health and safety. Each porter carries up to 15 kg of company equipment and 5 kg of personal items. This is why it is crucial to keep your personal duffel bag weight under our 7 kg limit. You might see other companies allowing their porters to carry more than the allotted weight, but at Alpaca Expeditions, we strictly adhere to these limits to ensure our porters' well-being.

Alpaca Expeditions offers its passengers the chance to experience local cooking. We aim to immerse trekkers in Inca life by walking them through the original Inca paths and teaching them about Inca culture. Food is a significant part of Inca life, making it a special element in any tour or trek with Alpaca Expeditions.

In 2022, Alpaca Expeditions introduced a cooking class as part of each of our treks, conducted by our amazing trekking chefs and interpreted by our guides.

We will transform your dining tent into a makeshift kitchen, providing all the necessary supplies to prepare a Peruvian specialty. Your chef will guide you step by step through the process of making a traditional Peruvian meal, such as Lomo Saltado, and share some essential mountain cooking tips.

Peru is recognized as a top culinary destination, largely thanks to the popularity of our renowned beef dish, Lomo Saltado. This is most often the meal you will learn to cook, but there is also the opportunity to learn how to prepare other dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche or even our signature drink, the pisco sour.

Cooking Class on the Inca Trail: These classes are voluntary and designed to be a fun, educational experience. Our clients consistently marvel at the amazing ability of our chefs to create culinary magic on a mountaintop. As you learn to prepare and cook Peruvian specialties, you will also see firsthand how such elaborate meals can be created on a small campsite stove.

Enjoy a cooking class in the mountains and be sure to take plenty of photos, just in case your friends won't believe your incredible experience.

Satellite Phones

The best way to hike in the mountains of Peru is to completely disconnect from technology, especially the internet and cell phones. The most impressive and exciting aspect is the opportunity to experience the true and wonderful nature that we often miss when we are at home, watching TV or absorbed in our cell phones during our leisure time. The feeling of being disconnected from work and the daily routine left at home is incredible.

However, this remoteness means limited access to emergency resources. That's why Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones for every trek.

We are prepared to assist you in case of any emergency, particularly health-related issues. For this reason, Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones, as they are one of the most crucial tools for any operator trekking in remote areas where telephone or television signals are absent. This means that every guide on our treks will be equipped with a fully charged satellite phone as well as radios. While these are primarily for emergencies, we allow our clients to use them at any time.

We ask that you cover the cost, which is $2.50 per minute. This fee can be paid in cash at our office or via PayPal once you have completed the trek.

Being just a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured of their safety. Radios, which all our guides carry, have limited reach, so Alpaca Expeditions includes satellite phones to ensure that we can connect no matter where we are on the mountain.

Portable private toilet

We understand that our clients will need restroom facilities at various times and locations during their journey. Along the Inca Trail, there are restrooms available, particularly those belonging to the communities near the trail. Alpaca Expeditions provides portable toilets to enhance this service, which will be set up at each meal site or campsite.

As with any mountain trip where we are exposed to nature, it is possible to use natural areas as restrooms. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the waste we generate, such as toilet paper or wet wipes used for cleaning. These should be carried with us and not discarded on the ground or left along the trail. Remember, the Inca Trail is a protected area overseen by a government institution. In places where garbage bins are unavailable, particularly at our camps, we provide special plastic bags for waste. Our porter team will be responsible for carrying out our waste.

Please be aware that although there are designated bathrooms for men and women, in practice, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between men's and women's bathrooms. Therefore, it is common for people of all genders to use whichever bathroom is available.

Our tour will begin by visiting a fascinating boulevard called Jiron de la Unión that leads to Plaza de Armas, the main square of French influence. Afterward, your guide will lead you through beautiful San Martin Square, where you can appreciate enchanting buildings of French styles surrounding the square. DAY 2: LIMA - NAZCA

Today, a big world mystery is about to be revealed by you, the Nazca Lines! The morning can be enjoyed with a delicious breakfast provided by your hotel. Later, our MACHU TRAVEL PERU host will pick you up and take you directly to Paracas bay in a private transfer.

In Paracas, you’ll be taken to your confirmed hotel. After check-in, you’ll be escorted to Pisco Aerodrome. On the route, our local host will explain the Nazca Lines Overfly activity, step by step. Once in the aerodrome, the aircraft staff will give you some security advice. Minutes later, the aircraft will be in the air!

In a few minutes, you will find yourself ascending in a circular path, gradually discovering the fantastic Nazca Lines. Prepare your camera because you will get unique photos of these indecipherable geoglyphs of monkeys, hummingbirds, trees, parrots, astronauts, dogs, condors, and other geoglyphs. All these were graphed by a pre-Columbian culture just as mysterious between 1 and 600 A.D. Their purpose is unknown. Still, many theories propose they were part of a giant astronomical calendar. This is one of life’s unique experiences, and now it's at your fingertips!

After your dream flight, our local host will welcome you again in the aerodrome, and, depending on your free time, he’ll recommend restaurants where you will enjoy a well-deserved meal on your own. The decision is always yours.

Following, you’ll be taken to the beautiful Huacachina Oasis, in nearby Ica city.

Lined with imposing palm trees, this paradise blue-green oasis is also surrounded by giant dunes on which you can have a wild and unforgettable sand buggy experience, crossing deserts at full speed and climbing steep sandy slopes under a stunning sun and a completely blue sky. Without mentioning the extra activity of sand-boarding, which consists of sliding over steep slopes of giant dunes, from the top to the down, similar to surf. Simply wonderful!

We will return to your hotel in Paracas at sunset, where you will take a deserved rest. Take a relaxing shower in your room or maybe enjoy a tasty dinner on your own.

DAY 3: NAZCA – LIMA

Are you ready to see some marine wildlife, up, close and personal? Well, today, early in the morning, a fresh and varied breakfast will be waiting for you in the dining room of your hotel. Afterward, your host will come to your hotel to drive you to the Chaco port, where you will board a speedboat, which will take you to explore the fantastic Ballestas Islands.

Head out to sea and discover an ancient Candelabro (candle holder) geoglyph on the slopes of a gigantic coastal dune in the Paracas National Reserve. Nobody knows its origin and function, but historians agree, it doesn't belong to the Nazca Lines.

Then, navigate among unique rock formations nestled between the deep sea and the deserted coast and be amazed by the sea lions, seals, guano birds, pelicans, and even penguins resting on these rocky islets in their natural habitat, without meshes and glass in between you. Completely fascinating!

In the afternoon, once the speedboat has docked in the local port and the tour has ended, your host will transfer you back to your hotel, where you can have a delicious lunch on your own and enjoy some free time.

At a particular hour, our host will say goodbye and you’ll be taken to Lima in private transportation.

Another local host will welcome you in the Peruvian capital and transfer you to your hotel of preference. Relax, enjoy the facilities or have an exquisite dinner on your own. This is a good time to recharge your batteries for your adventure tomorrow.

DAY 4: LIMA – CUSCO - SACRED VALLEY

Our adventure in Andean lands is about to begin! After a satisfying breakfast provided by your hotel, our host will take you to Lima airport and send you on a comfortable, 75 minute flight to Cusco, the ancient Imperial Inca City.

You can watch the Pacific Ocean merge with blue skies through your plane window which give way to gigantic dunes. These, in turn, collapse on the slopes of gigantic Andean mountains. Which were conquered many centuries ago by the impressive Inca civilization.

Upon your arrival to Cusco, our local host will be waiting for you at the zone of arrival national flights at Cusco airport with a sign with your name. “It is not altitude sickness… it is the feeling of being close to heaven” is a phrase he’ll often say about the altitude. Thus, to avoid altitude sickness, we’ll move directly from Cusco airport to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, located 600 meters below Cusco. But please don't worry, you will get to enjoy all the wonderful sights of Cusco at the end of our journey once your body is perfectly acclimatized to the altitude.

Upon entering the Sacred Valley of the Incas, we will visit an exceptional project called Awanacancha, where you’ll be able to appreciate the 4 types of South American camelids bred in captivity: the llama, the alpaca, the guanaco, and the vicuña. Also, you can feed them and learn to distinguish them. As if this were not enough, the Sacred Valley locals who work there will show you how they use their Inca ancestors’ techniques to transform the delicate fur of these animals, especially the alpaca and vicuña, into beautiful and colored clothes through traditional weaving, like multi-colored belts and exquisitely embroidered blankets, among others.

Then, we’ll continue descending through the valley slope until we reach a spectacular Inca archaeological site over a hill called Pisac, with magnificent terraced fields on its hill slopes, among Inca enclosures, squares, temples, and even an Inca cemetery! Our first contact with a rich Andean past! Descending into the modern town, we will lose ourselves among the colored stands of the famous Pisac traditional market, where we will be fascinated by its beautiful handicrafts made by local people, like fabric crafts, sculptures, jewelry, and paintings with Andean thematic.

Next, we will go to a charming restaurant in the middle of the beautiful landscapes of the Sacred Valley to enjoy a delicious lunch made from local ingredients, fully included in our program. You can choose the restaurant, in advance, with the advice of our travel consultants.

Finally, we’ll go to our hotel in the middle of the spectacular scenery of the Sacred Valley and you can enjoy a delicious dinner here, on your own. A well-deserved sleep is guaranteed tonight.

The Sacred Valley is known for its charming climate 365 days a year. First, you'll enjoy a delicious breakfast at your luxury hotel. Then, with our guide, we will begin our adventure through the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Discover Ollantaytambo, a fortress that was the last Inca refuge in Andean lands during the Spanish invasion. Wander among its narrow alleys, temples, enclosures and squares of well-carved, perfectly fitted, stone architecture. This incredible experience will be accompanied by stories and myths that your guide will tell you about the place. One notable mention, the fantastic ancient love story legend about an Inca military General and a beautiful Princess, the daughter of the Inca emperor Pachacutec.

Next, you will go to a beautiful farm in the middle of the beautiful landscapes of the Sacred Valley, called Huayocari to enjoy a delicious and exclusive lunch made from local ingredients. Also, you can enjoy a paradise garden full of orchids and its beautiful colonial facilities.

Then, our next stop will be the white slopes of Maras. There, you will enjoy the brightness of 2,000 small Inca salt wells that are still used by local people today to provide themselves with salt. By the way, the Maras salt is recognized worldwide as being perfect for grills and barbecues.

Moving on, our guide will transfer up to Moray, where you'll be fascinated by a series of circular terraces, in the form of rings, that go into the earth's deeps. These circle terraces were used as an Incan laboratory to acclimatize crops. They sowed a specific type of seed in each circular terrace, from the smallest and deepest ring to the largest, to see the quality of the harvest they obtained.

Finally, we’ll return to the hotel to for a deserved rest, you can take a relaxing shower or, maybe, enjoy a fantastic dinner on our own.

DAY 6: SACRED VALLEY - MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

The day to conquer Machu Picchu has come! After a delicious breakfast in your hotel, our host will take you to Ollantaytambo train station to dispatch you on a charming and comfortable train heading to Aguas Calientes, the modern town of Machu Picchu. The magical train trip will last one and a half hours, crossing the spectacular Peruvian jungle, always accompanied by the singing of exotic birds, leafy undergrowth, and the Vilcanota river that will follow the train's movement, like a snake on the lookout for its prey!

Once you arrive at Aguas Calientes train station, our local guide will await you at the arrivals gate. With your guide, you’ll go to the bus station to take a “CONSETTUR” bus heading to the top of a mountain where Machu Picchu citadel is located. After 35 minutes of the bus trip, the bus will drop you at the same entrance gate to Machu Picchu.

Then, you will enter the famous Inca citadel to start living the magic there! You can get lost between enclosures, squares, temples, and stone alleys perfectly carved and fitted. Exploring for two hours the mysteries and magic of an Inca citadel that continues to amaze the world with its beauty. Of course, as a soundtrack, you will listen to the stories of its construction, inhabitants, and function from your private guide.

Once the tour is over, but not before taking your dream photo of Machu Picchu, you’ll enjoy a fantastic lunch in the Tinkuy restaurant, the only one located on the same Machu Picchu mountaintop, to enjoy a fantastic lunch totally included in our program.

Next, we’ll take a CONSETTUR bus back to Aguas Calientes town and then to the train station. You’ll say goodbye to our guide there while he dispatches you on a comfortable train back to Ollantaytambo or Poroy train stations. Whatever station you arrive at, another member of our staff will wait for you to transfer to the Cusco Hotel, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner on your own, before taking a relaxing shower and enjoying a well-deserved rest.

Don't worry; as you can see, you will always be assisted at any departure or arrival point!

OPTIONAL: If you want to continue enjoying Machu Picchu, this package, like all the others, can be fully customized by adding a night in Aguas Calientes. So, on the following day, you'll be able to enjoy a second visit to the enigmatic Inca citadel or hike to nearby mountains like Huayna Picchu and get fabulous photos of Huayna Picchu. Just tell us your requirements, and that's it!

DAY 7: CUSCO

Are you ready to visit the beautiful, old, Capital of the Inca empire, the “Rome of America” . Of course, we refer to Cusco!  After your hotel provides a comforting and delicious breakfast, your guide will be ready to transport you into the past.

First, you’ll explore the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, with its giant rocks perfectly fitted into its structure. The tour will continue by visiting the Qenqo Inca ceremonial center with its ancient sacrifice vestiges. Then, the Inca, military barrack, Puca Pucara will fascinate you with its beautiful views of Cusco. Following, our guide will show you the retreat place of the Inca sovereign called Tambomachay, with its beautiful water fonts, where the sovereign spent long periods resting and hunting.

Then, we will return to Cusco Center to lose ourselves in its charming stone alleys by appreciating the renaissance architecture of the Cathedral of Cusco and its famous painting collection of unique art style called "Escuela Cusqueña".

Later, your guide will lead you to Qoricancha temple, located a short distance from the Cathedral, where you will be fascinated with the mix of Inca and Spanish architectural styles, besides some original remains of the Inca temples inside it.

Finally, our tour will end in the main square. You might enjoy a nice lunch or dinner on your own in one of the nearby restaurants, or we can arrange transport to drop you off at your hotel. Whatever your decision, tell your guide what you would like to do!

DAY 8: CUSCO - LIMA

Saying goodbye to a beautiful place doesn't have to be sad. That is why, at Machu Travel Peru, we want to save you this trouble. You can enjoy one final, delicious and comforting breakfast fully included in your hotel reservation.

Then, we will accompany you to the Cusco airport to say goodbye and send you on your flight to Lima.

Itinerary day-by-day

Welcome to Peru! Upon landing at Cusco airport, we will greet you and take you in private transportation to your hotel. We will have a short briefing on your trip, and the rest of the day will be free to relax and acclimatize to the high-altitude. Remember to take it easy on the first day! According to your time of arrival, we have plenty of suggestions for you to make the most of your first day in Cusco.

Get ready for a soft hike around Cusco city center and the surrounding countryside! Start in the outskirts of the city visiting Sacsayhuaman, an Inca fortress overlooking Cusco. Continue with an easy one-hour descent walk through a small portion of an old Inca road until arriving at the iconic San Blas neighborhood. Our walking city tour will take us not only through the most touristic sites in Cusco, such as the Main Square, Cathedral, and Koricancha, also known as Temple of the Sun. You will walk along ancient streets, local markets, and old neighborhoods where you will discover the magic of Cusco. This hike is the perfect way to get a genuine feel of this marvelous city and its people.

Set off to the Sacred Valley of the Incas to visit some of the most impressive Inca sites. Our first destination will be Pisac’s traditional village, where we’ll have a look at it’s well maintained archaeological site and picturesque Andean market. Enjoy lunch at a restaurant in Urubamba and visit Ollantaytambo, a charming village that has not changed much since Inca times. This town is famous for the Ollantantaytambo archaeological site, a place with impressive Inca stonework only seconded by Machu Picchu. Later, board the train to Aguas Calientes town, where you spend the night.

The big day is finally here! Early in the morning, take a 30-minute bus up the steep zigzagging road to Machu Picchu Citadel, located on an impressive mountain setting. We’ll have a 3-hour guided excursion to have a better understanding of Machu Picchu and the Incas culture. Your guide will be happy to answer all the questions you may have. Afterward, return to Aguas Calientes to enjoy a last walk around the town and have lunch before boarding your return train back to Ollantaytambo. Upon arriving, we will take you to your hotel in Cusco city.

After taking your last walk around Cusco, we’ll head to the local airport to board your flight to Lima. Upon arriving, we’ll drive you in a private shuttle to your hotel located in the heart of Miraflores. The afternoon will be free to enjoy this pretty seaside district on your own. You can stroll along the parks overlooking the ocean or try some ceviche in one of Lima’s top restaurants. If you are interested in culture and history, we recommend the Amano Museum and prehispanic pyramids of Huaca Pucllana, both within walking distance in Miraflores. Of course, we’ll be providing you with maps and plenty of tips for you to make the most of your time in Lima!

Start your day leaving Lima behind as you travel towards Paracas, located 3 hours south of Lima. We’ll first drive to Pisco airfield and board a modern Cessna Caravan aircraft to fly over the enigmatic Nazca Lines and the discoveries of Palpa Lines. During the flight, observe the mysterious figures of animals, humanoids, and geometric shapes perfectly crafted in the desert. Continue to your beach hotel at the shores of the Paracas Bay. The rest of the day is free to spend at your pace. You can join a nautical activity, relax at the oceanfront pool, taste a delicious Pisco cocktail, or walk along the Bay.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast and go to the hotel’s pier and board the fully equipped speedboats towards the Ballestas Islands, also known as the little Galapagos, because of their great variety of wildlife. Try and spot the sea lions, penguins, and other bird species that live here! On route, take a moment to observe The Chandelier, an enigmatic figure that we can only see from the sea. Finally, start your journey back to Lima’s airport to board your connecting flight back home. If time allows, we can visit the Paracas National Reserve on the way.

Arrival to Lima

Lima is a bustling, busy city and one of the most important in South America. Any trip to Peru will likely begin and end in the capital and visitors take advantage of the fact that Lima is widely regarded to be the culinary capital of the continent and home to many of the best restaurants in South America. Home of the ceviche and the Pisco Sour it is a city where the past and present mix beautifully, from the colonial center to modern Miraflores, through to the ancient Incan and pre-Incan culture which can be seen in Lima’s various museums.

A city of almost 11 million people, it is nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains. This unique location means it enjoys a microclimate of zero rainfall and is spread along the coast atop cliffs that offer beautiful sunset views and peaceful ‘malecóns’, even a short trip is guaranteed to be richly rewarding and a perfect introduction to Peru and its culture.

Bike Tour & History

In the morning, you will visit the most incredible “huariques” of Peruvian food along this funny ride by bike.

After lunch, we venture to the center of Lima to experience the bustle and activity of the old colonial empire and take in the major sights. On this tour, we show you all of the important legislative, religious, and administrative buildings of Lima past and present including the two main squares, San Martin and the Plaza de Armas, as well as the municipal building, the Archbishop’s Palace as well as the Governmental Palace and of course the Cathedral. Then you will visit the impressive Convent of Santo Domingo, an astonishing building with a colonial style. After exploring the Historical Center, you will head towards the Larco Museum, which houses the incomparable Treasures of Ancient Peru private collection.

Nazca Lines and Dune Buggies

Today we head to the beachside resort of Paracas by tourist bus (private transfer is also available, ask us for details)

Along the way, your guide will give information about Peruvian coastal populations and cultures through the ages. Our first excursion is a flight over the Nazca Lines. We board a light aircraft that will take you over the Nazca plane, and the many geoglyphs representing stylized animals and plants, as well as geometric shapes such as trapeziums, triangles, and spirals cut into the earth and preserved for around 2,000 years. This is the best way to see these astounding and immense works, as from ground level they are far too big to be recognizable as the amazing works of art that they truly are.

Our afternoon excursion is a thrill-seeking ride over the dunes of neighboring Paracas. We begin with a light walk through the dunes to get a feel for our environment before boarding the dune buggies for a ride beginning at the bottom of the dunes as we snake our way up to the top of a dune of 150 meters in height. There we take a moment to enjoy the view, have a walk along the crest of the dune itself, and then the more adventurous among the group will have the option to sandboard (think surfing, but on the sand!) their way back down to the bottom of the dunes.

Ballestas Islands By Boat

Today we discover the Ballestas Islands, home to peculiar and diverse coastal fauna. Its sometimes referred to as the younger sibling of the Galapagos. After a light breakfast – always better when venturing out on a boat – this two-hour journey takes us around several small islands of the coast of Paracas where we have the opportunity to see many of the native species in their natural habitat. To the background cries of sea lions and various birds, you spend the morning spotting Humboldt penguins and large sea mammals.

On the way to the islands keep your eyes peeled for a sight of yet another giant geoglyph, the Candelabro (Candlestick) carved on the desert soil, making this a morning of archeological and natural history discovery. Please remember to bring your camera, sunscreen, hat, binoculars, windbreaker, sunglasses and to take motion sickness pills if sensitive. Once we return to shore we transfer you on to your bus or private car for the journey back to Lima.

Chinchero, Maras and Moray

After a good night’s rest, enjoy a delicious breakfast before our air-conditioned private vehicle takes you to the airport for the next exciting installment in your Peruvian adventure. Assistance is provided so don’t worry about your bags! You will fly from Lima to Cusco, where you are met at the airport and transferred into the Sacred Valley. Our tours in the Cusco area always begin in the valley, which is approximately 1,000 meters (3,000 feet) lower in elevation than Cusco, so that guests may better acclimatize to the altitude.

The Maras salt mines were an important part of the economy of the Inca culture and to this day the salt produced in these mines, recognizable by its pinkish hue, is amongst the most sought-after and expensive in the world. From there, we take you to the picturesque archaeological site of Moray which is a huge expanse of concentric terraces which the Incas used a botanical laboratory. Once finished with this leg of the tour, we enjoy a typical Andean lunch at the Casa de Barro restaurant.

Our next stop is at the PARWA Center in Chinchero, where you can learn about the centuries-old traditional textile making so important to the Andean people. You will have the chance here to buy traditional textiles and other souvenirs for your loved ones back home. Remaining in Chinchero we take in the 17th Century church built by the Spanish invaders and then the surrounding ruins, aqueducts, and agricultural terraces that sustained the local people hundreds of years ago.

The Citadel of Machu Picchu

Today is the big day! Get ready to tick one of the New Seven Wonders of the World off your list as we head to Machu Picchu Citadel. Leaving the Sacred Valley by train, we enjoy a peaceful snake through the mountains, uphill to Aguas Calientes, situated at the foot of Machu Picchu. The views on the way to Machu Picchu itself are an intrinsic part of the trip itself and worth savoring. Built in the mid 1400’s it acted as a royal estate to two different Inca rulers, Pachacutec Inca Yupanqui and Tupac Inca Yupanqui. After 80 years of occupancy, it was abandoned, possibly due to Spanish infiltration in other parts of Peru, and remained abandoned until the early last century when efforts Hiram Bingham brought its existence to world attention.

Machu Picchu is divided into two sectors, the urban and the agricultural. Our expert guide will take you through both and show you the key spots in the ancient citadel such as the Temple of the Sun and the Room, the Intihuatana Stone, and the Room of Three Windows. The residential buildings feature exquisite stonework with no cement or mortar and are characterized by small trapezoid windows that face the morning sun. After our extensive tour, we put you back on the train to your hotel in either Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

City Tour and Planetarium

Today, we pick you up at your hotel for your tour of Cusco and its most important archeological sites. Cusco, known as the Imperial City, and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is home to Inca structures with a smattering of colonial influence. You start your tour at the iconic San Pedro market, a local market where you can explore the myriad colors, flavors, textures and traditions of modern Cusco. The visit continues with the Koricancha Temple, an ancient Inca palace and cult center of the Sun God, above which the order of the Dominicans built a church. It remains standing to this day. Still standing to this day, this temple/church really is a remarkable building and an amalgamation of the two cultures. From there, we ascend to the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman, an impressive example of Inca military architecture. Afterwards, you will explore Q’enqo archeological site, where important Inca ceremonies took place before moving on to the Plaza de Armas, home to the Cathedral, and the centerpiece of the city.

This afternoon, you will live a one-of-a-kind experience at the Planetarium of Cusco. Located only fifteen minutes from the city center we offer a learning experience of cosmic proportions. We will learn about the important relationship between the Andean man and the cosmos, how that evolved through the ages, and the importance and significance of the night skies to cultures past and present. Like many cultures, the Incans were fascinated by the constellations and celestial displays and here we can gain an explanation of what the beliefs and cultures were in relation to the night sky.

Thanks to special equipment, a starry sky, and constellation drawings will be projected, which will allow you to see the wonders of the universe up close. Finally, you will go to the exterior of the Planetarium where, if weather permits, you will be able to witness what is known as “the oldest show in the world”, observing the stars and constellations through telescopes and other astronomical observation instruments.

Chocolate before the Jungle

Everyone likes chocolate and yet not everyone knows where it comes from or even what it looks like in its natural form – known as cacao. Today we venture out on a walk through the city of Cusco and learn the step-by-step process of the elaboration of chocolate, from bean to bar. Peru is a producer of many of the finest varieties of cacao in the world and as such also produces some of the best chocolate in the world. While most of the cacao grown in Peru is exported, there are some artisan chocolate makers that still produce bars of chocolate in the most traditional way know.

First, we learn to roast the beans and then process them. Once roasted we peel them and then grind them down to make our master paste. This paste is what is used for making hot chocolate and you may have noticed the traditional Cusqueñan drink on menus in the city. From there the paste is processed into chocolate, which according to the mix you make will be darker and bolder, or lighter and sweeter. All the paste and chocolate you make is yours to keep and you can take it home with you, along with the knowledge and expertise of how to make more!

After, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Iquitos, where you will be met and taken to your hotel for a good night’s rest.

Embarkation

AM : Enjoy breakfast in your hotel before meeting us mid-afternoon at the Hilton Iquitos DoubleTree hotel, where you will receive your first orientation talk about the adventure you are about to begin! Then, we will head in a private vehicle to the city of Nauta, the historical fluvial port where we board the ship.

PM : Our staff will show you to your suite, equipped with comfortable beds, 100% Peruvian Pima cotton sheets, cotton bathrobes, air conditioning, and a private bathroom with a shower and amenities. Before setting sail, our bartender will serve you a cocktail prepared with local fruit and pisco, the most popular liquor in Peru. You can sip it while enjoying 360° views from the observation deck or a panoramic view from the indoor or outdoor lounge.

After setting sail, our naturalist guides will offer an overview of the travel itinerary, including activities, routes, information about wildlife and vegetation, geographical and historical context, as well as other useful info. If you have any doubts or concerns, our guides are always available to answer your questions.

We’ll then enjoy the welcome dinner. Start your journey by sampling the selected wines and dining Peruvian cuisine with an Amazon flare. After dinner, you’ll be able to take in stunning views of the starry night sky while we start our journey to the depth of the Amazon rainforest.

Amazon River, Kukama Reserve (Yanayacu of Yucapana), Source of the Amazon, Marañón River, Puerto Prado Community & Nauta Creek

AM : Before breakfast, go out for a boating expedition on the Amazon River to explore the local flora and fauna. When you get back enjoy our breakfast buffet. We offer a daily selection of traditional dishes including Peruvian specialties, freshly baked goods, and a range of freshly squeezed juices. After breakfast, head out to see the confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers, which give rise to the Amazon River. Here we can observe the pink and gray river dolphins.

PM : We’ll go back to the boat for lunch by midday and then have time to rest. Make sure you attend the talk about the source of the Amazon and the hydrography of the river so that you’ll be up to speed for our walk to Puerto Prado! Here we will see the “Victoria Regias”, the largest water lily in the world. We’ll then head back to the boat for dinner and live music. After dinner, enjoy a nighttime outing in search of caimans, tarantulas, frogs, and other nocturnal species.

Yanayacu of Pucate, Japanese Lagoon, Yanayaquillo, San Regis & Amazonian Natural Park

AM : Breakfast and outing on the skiff to different lakes and lagoons, until we reach the Japanese Lagoon. There, we’ll enjoy a picnic and one of the best conserved and protected areas of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. It’s also a popular spot to view pink river dolphins from the skiff. Before heading back to the Zafiro, we’ll take a trip to the Yanaquillo. Once we’re back on the cruise ship, we’ll get ready to go kayaking and take a dip in the black waters.

PM : Head back for lunch aboard the Zafiro. Before starting the afternoon activity, our guides will give a talk about the Amazon philosophy. Afterward, we’ll take a walk through the rainforest overhanging bridges, where you can admire the riches of the rainforest from the treetops. Once we’re back on the Zafiro, our bartender will give a demonstration of how to make Peruvian cocktails, and we’ll then enjoy live music while we await the gala dinner with the captain.

Marañón River, San Regis & Shiriyacu

AM : Breakfast and visit to the community of San Regis, where we’ll learn about the local people’s way of life and traditions. We’ll also learn about their ancestral traditions from the community’s shaman. With our guides as interpreters, we’ll be able to ask questions about spiritual connections and curing the soul. We’ll then continue the ceremony by planting a tree as a positive contribution to the environment. There, we’ll also see a market set up by women from the community to sell their handmade crafts.

PM : Head back for lunch aboard the Zafiro. After resting, the guides will tell us about the myths and legends of the Amazon. In the afternoon, we’ll head out on a skiff to the Shiriyacu stream. There, we’ll find the perfect spot to do some piranha fishing using local techniques and equipment. Back on the boat, we’ll enjoy the stunning colors of the sunset. Back on the Zafiro, you’ll have some time to relax and enjoy live music before the presentation by the crew and farewell dinner.

Disembarkation

AM : Before breakfast, visit Nauta, the second most important city in the region. Upon arriving, we take a motorcycle taxi to the local market where you can see what business in the town is like firsthand. We also take a visit to the Sapi Sapi lagoon, an arapaima hatchery. This is the second-largest freshwater fish in the world. Here you can see Arrau turtles, butterflies, and different species of birds and fish that call this lagoon home.

After, we head back to the Zafiro for breakfast. After breakfast, we begin to disembark. On the way to the airport, stop by the Amazon Rescue Center (CREA), where biologists and volunteers take care of manatees (an endangered species) rescued by the authorities. We’ll see how the manatees are cared for and prepped for reinsertion into their natural habitat. We also get to see other animals that have been rescued from attempts to turn them into pets and other dangerous situations.

Afterward, you will be transferred to Iquitos airport for your departure flight back to Lima.

Day 1 – International Arrival in Lima

• Lima Airport Transfer: Arrive in Lima at any time. Our representative will be waiting at Lima airport with a customized sign with the client’s name.
• Upon arrival in Lima, assistance at the airport and transfer to the lodging.

Day 2 – Lima Colonial Walking Tour

• Hotel breakfast; enjoy a free morning to explore the city alone.
• At 14:00, pick up and transfer to Lima historical center. We will take a fascinating walking tour. We will show our clients the palaces, castles, magnificent Saint Francisco Monastery, and spectacular subterranean Catacombs throughout our city.
• We visit the main square, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Municipal Palace, the train station Palace, the unique old-fashioned “Cordano Bar” colorful mansion palaces, the Jiron del Union Pathway, the Post Office Palace, the Dominicans Tower, and the Historical Rimac Bridge, as well as the lovely surrounded wooden Balconies.

Day 3 – Nazca Lines Air Tour – Day Trip from Lima

• Hotel breakfast; At 07:00, pick up from the hotel and transfer to Paracas; the trip takes approximately 4 hours along the South Pan-American Highway.
• At 11:00, once we arrived at the Pisco airport, we met with our representative and overflight the classic Nazca Lines tour.
• The route will be through the Ocucaje Valley panoramic view of the mountains that keep marine fossils from 150 million years old. Fly over the Valleys of Santa Cruz, Palpa, and Ingenio, where Paracas and Nazca cultures developed.
• There is an opportunity to see the following lines and geometric figures: Trapezoids, The Whale, Compass, Astronaut, Monkey, Dog, Hummingbird, Condor, Spider, Alcatraz, Flamingo, Parrot, Hands, and Tree, and finally, overflight through 2 geoglyphs; Palpa Hummingbird and the Star. (Between the departure and return of the Pisco airport, it takes 1 hour and 40 minutes – just flying over the Nazca lines takes 30 minutes). Day 4 – Flight to Cusco & Colorful Cusco Walking Tour

• Hotel breakfast; at 06:30, picked up from the hotel and escorted to the airport to trip to Cusco, the ancient Inca capital.
• Upon arrival in Cusco, assistance at the airport and transfer to the lodging.
• The rest of the day is free for relaxation to minimize the adverse effects of the high altitude and explore this wonderful city.
• Hotel pickup at 14:30. The walking tour starts in the colorful San Pedro market; there is probably no better place to witness Cusquean life. Enjoy a firsthand look at how residents live day-to-day outside the postcard perfection of Cusco’s main square. The guide explains this market’s history as its wanders through the narrow aisles laden with colorful fabrics, meals, fruit juice, bread, and shaman stalls.
• After, we visit Cusco’s main square. This busy and vibrant space marks the city’s colonial center, featuring wide stone pathways and well-kept colorful gardens.

Day 5 – Tour to the Sacred Valley (Pisac & Ollantaytambo)

• Hotel breakfast; pick up from the hotel at 07:30. We embark on a journey to the Inca’s Sacred Valley, beginning in Pisac, 31 km from Cusco. The old Incan archaeological site is on the summit of a mountain. There have the chance to witness the impressive stonemasonry skill of our ancient ancestors.
• Afterward, go down into the quaint little town and wander through its colorful market to buy intricate, beautifully hand-crafted products.
• Afterward, have lunch at a nearby restaurant.
• We next go to Ollantaytambo, an Inca military, religious, and agricultural hub perched on a mountain. Unlike other little villages, this one has retained its original Incan architecture, with magnificent stone structures and winding alleyways.
• Following the tour, we go to the Ollantaytambo railway station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed and transferred to the hotel.

Day 6 – Visit the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu & Back to Cusco

• Hotel breakfast; at 06:00. Take a bus to the Machu Picchu archaeological site (2,430m/7,972ft). Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the mountaintop fortress earned every bit of its notoriety.
• Around 07:30 am, the guided tour begins; the guide expertly directs through the astounding ruins and main streets. Then wander around the town squares and climb the intricately carved stairways made of stone. Machu Picchu is considered the world’s spiritual center by esoteric wisdom.
• The guided tour takes around two hours and 30 minutes.
• From 12:30 pm to 13:30, take the bus to Aguas Calientes.
• From 13:30 to 15:00, take lunch at a local restaurant in Aguas Calientes.
• Board the train to return to Cusco later in the day. Arrive at Poroy station and then be picked up and transported to the Cusco hotel.

Your trip to Peru has commenced! A representative will pick you up from the airport at the scheduled time to transfer you to your hotel in Lima. A modern metropolis full of history, travelers can find comfort and cultural activities in the capital city— though you’ll want to get plenty of rest as your sightseeing adventure begins the following day.

Fill up on breakfast but leave room for adventure, as today we’ll transfer from Lima to Paracas by bus and eventually fly over the mystifying Nazca Lines. These fauna-inspired geoglyphs first caught public attention in the early 20th century yet, to this day, no one quite knows what purpose they served. After reveling in their mysteriousness, you will be returned to your hotel to unwind for the day.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before heading out to the Paracas National Reserve, home to geological formations, national fauna and vestiges of a pre-Inca culture that dominated the desert during its prime. Within the Reserve, you will embark on a boat ride to appreciate the sole inhabitants of the Ballestas Islands: Humboldt penguins, sea lions and a variety of friendly sea birds. Afterwards, you will return to Lima by bus, where you will be transferred to your hotel for a relaxing evening.

Enjoy breakfast at your Lima hotel before continuing your Peru highlights trip to Cusco city. After a short flight (90 minutes) from Lima to Cusco, you’ll have a chance to settle into your hotel before an afternoon of exploration.

Once the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is full of architectural gems spanning varying centuries and shifts in power. A private tour will allow you to appreciate Santo Domingo Convent, a large, Renaissance-baroque complex built over Coricancha (‘The Temple of the Sun’), the most important temple of the Inca Empire. Next, marvel at the Cathedral, the most imposing monument of the Main Square, before heading over the hills of Cusco city to visit the 15th century stone fortress Sacsayhuaman, ritualistic site Qenqo, and the alleged military ruin Puka Pukara. Once finished, you will be ushered back to your hotel for the evening.

After a morning meal, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken to the traditional town of Chinchero. With a beautiful view of the Sacred Valley, this visit will offer you the chance to meet with artisans and admire their crafts. This town also hosts a beautiful seventeenth-century church, one of the first Catholic buildings in Peru, as well as archaeological remains. Afterwards, we’ll go to the nearby Living Museum of Yucay, where traditional Inca techniques of textile and ceramic artistry are put on display and real-life sources of natural fibers, such as llamas and alpacas, can be seen. In Ollantaytambo, we’ll carry on with this Peru tour’s spirit of tradition with lunch in a cozy restaurant inspired by local ingredients and regional dishes. Refueled, we’ll climb up the town’s iconic fortress to round out today’s adventures before heading to our Sacred Valley hotel. *On Sundays, also visit the local market.

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the Ollanta Station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. Full of handicrafts and restaurants, this small town is just a short ride from your much-anticipated visit to Machu Picchu. Because the Spaniards never discovered this Wonder of the World during their conquest over five centuries ago, the “Lost City of the Incas” has remained in impeccable condition. A guided tour explains the origins behind this awe-inspiring citadel and its most prominent landmarks, such as the monumental Main Square, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, Sacred Sundial, and more. Later on, we’ll return by bus to Aguas Calientes and have lunch at Café Inkaterra before catching a train back to the Ollanta station, from which you will be transferred to your hotel in Cusco.

Enjoy your final breakfast at your hotel in Cusco before a transportation service takes you to the airport for your return flight to Lima.

In Lima city:  Hotel pick up for a guided tour of the city of Lima includes the main tourist attractions such as: the historical center, the Republican square of San Martin, the historic and famous Plaza de Armas, the most precious jewel of the historic center of Lima, the Convent of San Francisco and its Catacombs The Tour continues to the modern district of Miraflores, the emblematic Park of Love with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean where you can enjoy an impressive panorama.The duration of the guided tour to the city of Lima is approximately 4 hours.

Nazca lines overflight:  "The lines of Nazca are drawn on the ground, these geoglyphs of the Nazca desert is located on an arid plateau that stretches for about eighty kilometers between the cities of Nazca and Palpa, in southern Peru. There are more than 300 different designs, including the stylized profiles of common animals in the area (the whale, the parrot, the more than 180 meters long lizard, the hummingbird, the condor and the enormous spider about 45 meters long). In total, the geoglyphs are composed of more than 10,000 lines, some of which measure 30 m in width and extend for more than 9 km, so they are clearly visible from the air or from the top of the nearby hills.

To The Lost City of The Incas Machu Picchu:   The trip by train to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) is one of the most spectacular trips that exist in South America. Undoubtedly the geography is captivating its flora and fauna of the eyebrow of the jungle emerges between the mountains.

Machu Picchu lay hidden from the world for such a long time because its location is fairly remote and inaccessible. Machu Picchu is located high up on a mountainside. The nearest town is Aguas Calientes which is located down in the valley beside the Vilcanota River. Aguas Calientes is only a couple of kilometres away from Machu Picchu as the crow flies but it takes a bus about 20 minutes to climb the narrow, steep zigzagging dirt track that connects the two. During the train journey you will have the chance to enjoy event seat: Plush seats with tables in the front, landscape: ample windows to admire the stunning countryside, audiotrack: relaxing background music, local drink: Irresistible selection of hot and cold drinks prepared using fresh local fruits and herbs.

According to local guides, the top of the mountain was the residence for the high priest and thelocal virgins.

The Sun Gates of Machu Picchu boast a picture - perfect vantage point overlooking Peru'smost famous ruins. Tourists flock to this outcrop high in the Andes Mountains to enjoy the same view featured on virtually every postcard depicting the Machu Picchu citadel. Also known as Inti Punku , the Sun Gates consist of two stones perched at a narrow passage in the crevice of the mountain just above Machu Picchu. The sun shines brilliantly through this portal each day when it rises - hence the name, overnight in Machu Picchu town.

Return to Cusco city in a train journey: at 14.30 p.m or 19.00 p.m train back to Cuzco, upon arrival transfer to your hotel selected

Get a bird’s eye view of the Nazca Lines, animal and geometric shape formations, etched into the earth thousands of years ago.

After an early breakfast, travel 4 hours by private vehicle to the Nazca Lines. Originally thought to be the remains of irrigation lines beyond the verdant Nazca Valley, it wasn’t until they were seen from the air that the lines were recognizable as giant animals and geometric figures. The lines are thought to have been etched by three different groups from 900 BC to AD 630. Take to the sky to see for yourself during a short, comfortable flight. Please note that, due to weather conditions, a short wait should be expected before boarding your flight. Lunch and dinner are on your own.

Little is known about the natives who inhabited the area that is now Colombia before the Spanish arrived in 1500.

Shortly after arriving, the Spanish established the colony of New Granada and built the settlement of Santa Fe de Bogota, which subsequently becomes known as Bogota. These new colonies thrived and many African slaves were taken to these cities to assist with building and maintenance. After a 14-year struggle, Simí³n Bolí­var’s Venezuelan troops defeated the Spanish at the battle of Boyacá in Colombia in 1819. The resulting Republic of Gran Colombia united Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, and Ecuador as a single country under one central leader. Due to regional differences, Gran Colombia dissolved in 1829-1830 when Bolí­var lost Venezuela and Ecuador to separatists.

In the 19th century, Colombia was a troubled country and suffered eight civil wars between its liberal and conservative parties as conservatives believed in a strong central government and a powerful church while liberals believed in a decentralized government, strong regional power, and a limited role of the church. Political instability continued through the late 19th century and culminated in the War of a Thousand Days which began in 1899 and resulted in the death of nearly 120,000 people.

In the early 20th century, social legislation was introduced and Colombia was generally peaceful and without conflict – trade unions were encouraged, the economy developed and the export of coffee increased. This period of rest was short-lived however and the assassination of the well-liked and respected left-wing mayor of Bogota in 1948 caused riots and began a civil war that lasted until 1957.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the situation in Colombia improved. In 2000, the United States pledged $1.3 billion to fight drug trafficking with “Plan Colombia”. Violence in Colombia declined after 2002 when President Alvaro Uribe increased Colombia’s security, aggressively campaigned against the drug trade, and passed several economic reform bills.

In 2012, the United States-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement (CTPA) went into effect. This agreement eliminated tariffs and other trade barriers to the exchange of goods and services between Colombia and the United States. In the early 21st century, the Colombian economy grew rapidly and poverty and unemployment declined. Today, Colombia is booming, tourism is increasing and the country has a bright future.

History of Peru

The history of Peru (before the Inca era) as we know it today has been uncovered, in large part, through large archaeological excavation endeavors. Historical artifacts including ceramics, textiles, and cave drawings have been collected, sorted, and displayed throughout Peru’s archaeological museums – a collection of clues as to the lives of Peruvian inhabitants who lived and worked nearly 20,000 years ago. Advanced hunting tools and well-planned irrigation systems lead many to believe that these early colonies were cutting-edge, organized, and well-established.

The Incan empire ruled from around 1400 A.C. to 1500 and is widely considered one of the largest dynasties in American history before the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492. This small tribe of peoples was based out of Cusco, which served as the country’s capital city throughout Inca rule. Machu Picchu is one of the most well-preserved ruins left behind by the Incan peoples, and thousands of tourists flock to visit the historical site’s peak each year. The Incas grew to be one of the largest and most powerful forces in South America and had a complex and interesting society that is well studied to this day.

Spanish soldiers arrived in the South American land in 1532 and began plotting to take over the rule of the fertile and bountiful country. These European soldiers brought smallpox and other illnesses into Peru, killing thousands of “New World” inhabitants including Huayna Capac who served as the 11th Inca or King. Capac’s sons were each given half of his kingdom and a civil war that began between the brothers helped to quicken the downfall of the Incan empire. Spanish rulers changed the capital of Peru from the land-locked Cuzco to coastal Lima to accommodate arriving soldiers and facilitate trade.

Peru’s Independence Wars were fought from 1810 until 1824 when a battle led by General Antonio Jose de Sucre secured freedom from Spanish rule. Peru continued to fight for freedom throughout the 1800s and 1900s – defeating Spanish rulers in 1866 and losing a large piece of land to Chile in a war that spanned from 1879 to 1883. A war with Ecuador in 1941 over borders wasn’t resolved until 1998 when Peru agreed to allow Ecuador access to the Amazon rainforest in exchange for keeping control over the land.

In 2001 Peru elected its first Native Indian President, Alejandro Toledo. The country has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of South America and thousands of tourists visit to hike, swim, shop, and to learn more about Peruvian history firsthand through the exploration of archaeological sites and artifacts each year.

Peru is one of the most diverse countries in Latin America – with warm coastal deserts, cool rainforests and even snowy mountain regions. Located south of the equator, Peru experiences weather patterns that are opposite to those experienced by individuals living on the East Coast of the United States – so cold and snowy weather in Boston is a likely indicator of warm and sunny skies in Lima. The weight limit for checked luggage on most internal flights, including Cusco and the Amazon is currently 20 kilos (44 pounds) per person. If you are over that limit, you’ll likely need to pay a surcharge.

Large suitcases are not permitted on the train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu, although these cases can be stored securely at the lodge during excursions. A small weekend bag is recommended as you’ll need a change of clothes and essential items when travelling to Machu Picchu overnight.

The typical dress code throughout the country is functional and casual – female travellers may want to bring one dress and a pair of dressier sandals for night-time outings or fancy dinner reservations.

Best time to visit Peru

Peru is made up of three distinct geographical subsections, each with their own weather and temperature patterns. The country is split (N to S) by the Andes mountains and contains parts of the Amazon jungle in the East. Although each of these locals experiences slightly different weather patterns, November through March is generally considered to be the “Wet season�? and April through October is generally considered to be the “Dry season�? throughout the entire country. COASTAL REGION

Temperatures are generally warm throughout the year and the coastal region usually experiences little rainfall. High daytime temperatures (80+ F) and lower nighttime temperatures (50+ F) make for a relaxing vacation. The city of Lima can get quite foggy from April through October but the sun breaks through clouds the further out from Lima you travel. The capital city is warm and humid from November through March.

ANDES / MACHU PICCHU

Expect high temperatures and dry climates from April through October – although temperatures vary by altitude so light layers are encouraged for those planning to visit the peaks of Machu Picchu. Sudden, heavy showers occur from November through March so raincoats are a must.

AMAZON RAINFOREST

Humidity is high throughout the year and rainfall should be expected from November through March. Warm days and cool nights demand layers for travelers who expect to be outside for long periods of time.

History of Ecuador

Ecuador’s written history as we know it today begins with the concentration of early cultures of indigenous peoples throughout coastal areas that supported the majority of inhabitants from as far back as the year 9000 B.C. These early pioneers lived relatively peaceful lives in small clans and large tribes who survived by fishing, hunting, and eventually farming on the region’s fertile land. These wandering tribes eventually settled down into permanent societies including the Valdivia peoples who created intricate ceramic pottery creations, the Quitus peoples (after whom Quito is named) and the Caras who enjoyed considerable power and prestige in the region until the mid 1400’s when the small country was invaded by the Incas of Peru.

The Incas were ruthless in their pursuit of power over Ecuadorian land and many lives were lost defending the area – to no avail. Quechua, an Inca language still widely spoken in Ecuador was introduced to natives at this time and many great buildings and cities were built throughout the region. The Inca empire enjoyed its rule over Ecuador until the mid 1500’s when Spanish forces took the land in yet another series of bloody battles that ultimately led to the total conquering of Ecuadorian peoples. A period of enslavement ensued, and Spanish rulers continued to profit from the work of Ecuadorian citizens until major worldwide financial depressions caused economic downfall in the period between 1700 and 1800.

This collapse allowed for the possibility of native revolt and Ecuadorians from all walks of life banded together to retake the cities once ruled by their ancestors. Ecuador became fully independent in 1830 – but internal power struggles created a period of instability and fear. Democratic leadership and free elections in the 20th century helped to create a more peaceful society that has prospered over time – and tourism quickly became one of the fastest growing industries in this small South American hotspot.

Ecuador Packing List

Ecuador’s unique landscape includes four diverse subregions that all have individual weather patterns and climates – so travelers should consult with their individual itineraries to pinpoint which areas they will visit during their stay. Although some areas (like Guayaquil and the Ecuadorian Amazon region) experience extremely high, humid temperatures at times during the year, other locations (like the country’s’ capital city, Quito) have consistently mild temperatures that hover below seventy degrees (fahrenheit) throughout the year.

If you are travelling to several regions during your stay, packing a suitcase full of light layers can help to accommodate temperature changes and keep you comfortable during your stay. Some areas at high-elevations experience light snowfall during the winter months, so a fleece jacket is recommended for travel during that time. All fabrics should be quick-drying as short rainshowers are common in many areas around the country.

The primary currency used in Ecuador is the US dollar and many personal-hygiene items are available for purchase so don’t bother loading your suitcase full of shampoo, toothpaste or the like. Purchasing clothing and shoes can be difficult, especially large sizes, as the average Ecuadorian is shorter than US travelers. When to Visit Ecuador

Ecuador is a small country with a hugely diverse population and a wide variety of biologically unique plants and animals. The peak travel season for tourists runs from June through September and from December through January – although stable weather patterns create a friendly environment for visitors throughout the year. There are four major climate zones in Ecuador, so tourists are able to plan travel around the current climate of each zone.

The Andes Region, including Quito and the Andean Highlands experiences cool and dry temperatures throughout the winter season which lasts roughly from June through September. Warmer temperatures are enjoyed during the summer months (December through March) but this time period is also considered the country’s rainy season so visitors can expect to experience a few showers during their travels.

The Amazon region experiences rainfall year round but temperatures are generally high – reaching 90+ degrees fahrenheit throughout the year. Heading towards the Pacific Coast region, travelers can expect high temperatures and sunny days, mixed in with short rainshowers during the day. Cooler temperatures and cloudy skies from June to September mean it will be too chilly to swim during the dry season in this area.

Finally, the Galapagos Region experiences dry weather and cool temperatures from June to December with rainy conditions and warmer weather starting in late December and lasting until May.

Galapagos Islands Descriptions

Located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands are made up of 13 main islands and 48 islets. Scattered over an area of 36,000 square miles around the equator, none of the islands have ever been connected by land to any mainland area. The Islands are entirely volcanic and are considered to be one of the largest and most active sets of oceanic volcanoes in the world. The formation of the Islands began between three and five million years ago, very “young” in geologic terms. Volcanic eruptions broke through the ocean floor and initiated the building of underwater mountains, which continued to grow with successive eruptions and form the Galapagos Islands. The islands are still active today with new eruptions typically occurring in the western part of the archipelago.

History of the Galapagos

The first visitors to the Galapagos Islands were Native Americans from mainland South America . The islands bear no archaeological remains of dwellings or other structures, so it is quite unlikely that any native colonies were ever established there. Pirates and renegades first inhabited the islands during the early 1500s. They would hide and camp out on the islands after raiding Spanish colonial ports. Due to their inhospitable nature and lack of water, the Spanish paid the islands little attention, giving them the name “Las Encantadas” or bewitched islands.

A new period began in 1832 when Ecuador proclaimed its sovereignty over the islands. There were only a handful of permanent settlers at that time but their number had increased to around 300 by 1835 when the HMS Beagle arrived with Charles Darwin on board. Darwin spent five weeks in the Galapagos collecting and preserving specimens from four separate islands. His field observations led him finally to conclusions published in On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection in 1859. The first Galapagos colony was established on the island of Floreana. The archipelago experienced many attempted settlements from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century by individuals from Norway, the US, and the UK. During World War II, a United States Army Air Force base was established on Baltra Island. From Baltra, crews patrolled the eastern Pacific for enemy submarines and provided protection for the Panama Canal.

Perfecting a packing list for the Galapagos can be difficult – even for the most seasoned traveler. The close proximity of these small islands to their home country of Ecuador means that domestic flights will likely be utilized at some point during the trip – so packing light is a must for individuals who wish to make weight limits for their flights! Individuals who will be flying from Quito should dress appropriately for the cool weather in the Ecuadorian town – a waterproof jacket is ideal and can be used several times throughout your trip.

The fewer things you actually bring on your trip to the Galapagos, the better – but tours often begin or end in other destinations that might require more substantial luggage arrangements. Packing a small, lightweight backpack that can act as a weekend bag is a great way to make sure you aren’t stuck with a ton of luggage on your trip. When making this once-in-a-lifetime trip, travelers have two main options to explore the islands: either through a land-based trip or a boat-based cruise through the islands. What to Expect on a Galapagos Cruise

Your home for the duration of your Galapagos visit will be a live-a-board boat of your choice, ranging in size from 16-100 passengers. You will eat, sleep and relax on this vessel, which will be your base for the duration of your 4, 5, or 8-day expedition. Each morning, after a hearty breakfast, you will disembark into a 16-passenger dinghy, known locally as a “Panga” The Panga will take you for wildlife excursions, either onshore, or at snorkel sites. Your Galapagos naturalist guide will deepen your understanding and appreciation of the local wildlife, either on land or in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. After a morning of close encounters with some of the famous species of the area, you return to the boat for lunch and to prepare for the next excursion as the vessel navigates to another visitor site. Usually, your afternoon excursion will take you to a completely different island to add a whole new perspective to your Galapagos experience.

Advantages of A Cruise:

• Once you arrive in the archipelago, you can unpack your bags once and for all you’ll stay in the same room on the vessel for the entirety of your stay.

What to Expect on A Galapagos Land-Based Trip

On land-based trips, you stay in eco-lodges or hotels in the port towns on the islands of Isabela, Santa Cruz, and San Cristobal. While you don’t visit as many islands as a cruise-based trip, land-based trips allow you to explore fewer islands in greater depth. From your land-based, you can get intimately acquainted with the island, independently exploring the wonders of the Galapagos in a small, private group with a Galapagos naturalist guide. Although it is impossible to visit as many islands as you would by sea, land-based trips will allow you to enjoy a variety of activities. For example, in the evenings relish fresh seafood at a family-run eatery then go for a sunset walk on Isabela’s beach and observe marine iguanas crawling out of the ocean onto the pristine white sand. During the day, active explorers might opt for sea kayaking, hiking on a dormant volcano, or mountain biking among coastal mangroves.

Advantages of a Land-Based Trip:

• Land-based excursions allow you to spend more time on each island, with opportunities to visit multiple sites and engage in a variety of activities.
• You will have more flexibility to experience the islands according to your own schedule and interests.

Because most of the wildlife remains on the islands year round, there’s always a lot to see. No matter when you visit, you’re guaranteed to encounter one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the planet!

The Galapagos Islands have a sub-tropical climate with two seasons, the Hot Season and the Dry Season. The seasons on the islands are set and defined entirely by the ocean currents that surround them. The Hot Season starts in December and gradually works its way until May . During this season, warm waters from the Panama Current move south and bath the islands creating tropical conditions. Seas are generally calm, and the warmer temperatures and evaporation cause occasional tropical showers, which turn the islands green and lush. Air temperatures are hot and humid and range from 79 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. The water temperature averages 77 degrees Fahrenheit. This is a great time to enjoy the warmer waters for snorkeling and to view green sea turtles that come into the islands to breed.

From June to November, the cooler Humboldt Current runs up the west coast of South America carrying rich oceanic upwellings from Antarctica that stimulate the breeding season for sea lions and sea birds. A desert spreads gradually in this tropical paradise. Evaporation decreases and this forms a thin layer of clouds over the islands that opens and closes throughout the day. This is known as the Dry Season with air temperatures ranging from 72 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit and sea temperatures averaging 67 degrees Fahrenheit (a wetsuit is recommended for snorkeling). This is the best time of year for observing dancing boobies, courting albatrosses, baby sea lions, whales, dolphins, and whale sharks.

Day 1 Arrive in Lima Today we arrive in Lima, Peru. In recent years, this city has undergone some wonderful restorations of the plazas, ornate facades, and wooden balconies for which it is famous. Named the 'City of Kings' by the Spanish Conquistadors, Lima is the capital of Peru. Founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, where the River Rimac meets the Pacific Ocean, this was the most important Spanish city during the colonial era with a population of about 100,000 inhabitants. Today the city is home to more than 7 million people. Overnight in Lima (Miraflores). Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Lima - Paracas & Nazca Lines Scenic Overflight We have an early morning private transfer to the bus station for the PUBLIC BUS to Paracas (4-5 hrs). On arrival transfer from the station to our hotel in Paracas. After a brief break for refreshment, we will head directly to the Pisco Airport to board your scenic overflight of the 2,000 year old Nazca Lines, comprised of about three hundred figures made of straight lines and geometric shapes most clearly visible from the air. The lines were supposedly built by an ancient civilization called the Nazca, though no one knows for sure who built them or why. Since their discovery, the Nazca Lines have inspired fantastic explanations from ancient gods, a landing strip for returning aliens, a celestial calendar, used for rituals probably related to astronomy, or a map of underground water supplies. Your total flying time will be about one hour; the total time spent over the lines themselves will be approximately 25-35 minutes. After the flight we drive back to our hotel in Paracas for dinner and overnight. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Ica Regional Museum, Winery & Huacachina Lagoon After breakfast, we visit the Regional Museum of Ica "Adolfo Bermúdez Jenkins," a significant cultural institution in Peru. This archaeology and anthropology museum offers a deep dive into the rich history and culture of the region, primarily dedicated to the Paracas culture, an Andean society known for its intricate textiles and complex societal structures. The museum has dedicated exhibition rooms showcasing artifacts and information about this culture, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about this ancient civilization. We then visit one of the traditional wineries of Ica, which can lay claim not only to the lion’s share of Peruvian production, but also to some of the oldest and longest established wineries in the New World (500+ years). Most of the vineyards in Ica are planted on the flatlands, hugging the riverbanks and irrigation channels — access to water is vital in this arid desert. The dry, sunny climate and free-draining sandy soils with their ample water supply allowed viticulture to thrive and you’ll still find many hundred-year-old vines in a perfectly healthy condition. Later we drive to the village of Huacachina, built around a small lake in the desert. Called the "Oasis of America," it serves as a resort for local families from the nearby city of Ica. Legend holds that the lagoon was created when a beautiful native princess was apprehended at her bath by a young hunter. She fled, leaving the pool of water in which she had been bathing to become a lagoon. Return to Paracas for dinner and overnight. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Paracas - Ballestas Islands - Lima This morning we enjoy a (shared) boat trip to the spectacular Ballestas Islands, often described as Peru's answer to the Galapagos. Though they don't quite match the splendour of their Ecuadorian cousins, they are quite spectacular in their own right. The islands have been eroded to form countless natural caves and arches. In fact, this is where the islands' name comes from -- the word Ballesta means 'bow' (as in archery). There are colonies of thousands of seabirds such as pelicans, Inca terns and cormorants as well as a small colony of Humboldt penguins. You will also see hundreds of sealions and often schools of dolphin. We return to Paracas and the take the bus north, arriving back in Lima late afternoon. Tonight we meet other incoming group members who are not participating in the Nazca extension. Overnight in Lima (Miraflores). Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Lima: City Tour This morning we will make our way to the Plaza de Armas, the most important plaza in Lima. The oldest surviving part of the plaza is the impressive bronze fountain, erected in 1650. Surrounding the plaza is the exquisite Archbishop's Palace, the cathedral, and the Government Palace where handsomely uniformed presidential guards are on duty all day. We visit the cathedral where the great conquistador Francisco Pizarro's tomb lies. After, we will continue to San Francisco's Church to visit the extensive catacombs that lie underneath, before then stopping for some lunch at Ficus Hacienda. Here we will also get to enjoy a wonderful exhibition of beautiful Peruvian Paso horses. We then proceed to the Larco Museum, which showcases remarkable chronological galleries and an excellent overview on 3,000 years of development of Peruvian pre-Columbian history. Located in a unique vice-royal mansion of the 18th century built over a 7th century pre-Columbian pyramid, is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Features the finest gold and silver collection from ancient Peru and the famous erotic archaeological collection, one of the most visited Peruvian tourist attractions. For an unforgettable experience, Larco is one of the few museums in the world where visitors can also choose to enter the storage area with its 45,000 classified archaeological objects. Later we head to the trendy area of Miraflores where people stroll along the cliff tops and watch the sun setting on the Pacific Ocean. The best location is the new "Love Park," with its magnificent monument to lovers at its centre. Dinner will be on your own this evening. Overnight in Lima. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 6 Lima - Fly to Cuzco - Urubamba Valley - Ollantaytambo - Yucay Early this morning we fly to Cuzco, located in a fertile valley at 3354 m (11,004 feet). This is the archaeological capital of the Americas and the ancient capital of the Inca Empire that, at its height, stretched from Colombia in the north, through Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, and down to central Chile in the south. Although the empire already existed in the 12th century, it remained small until the mid-15th century. Over the next 100 years, it expanded massively but declined due to the civil war and the conquest by the Spanish conquistadors under Francisco Pizarro in 1533. On arrival we will travel by road into the Urubamba Valley, or "Sacred Valley of the Incas," along one of the most scenic drives on our trip, to the Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo located on a spectacular ridge with deep valleys on either side. We can admire the carefully constructed and maintained farming terraces on the surrounding hillsides. We continue to the town of Yucay on the bank of the Urubamba River (2300m / 7,590 ft). This is an attractive little town of particularly fertile lands whose name translated into Spanish means "deceit" or "bewitchment". According to legend, in the middle of the 15th century, the Inca Huayna Capac was captivated by the incomparable magnificence of Yucay's setting and decided to settle here. Overnight in Yucay. Day 7 Yucay - Machu Picchu Area Today we take the early morning train* from Urubamba to Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu. The train journey to Machu Picchu is a highlight of any trip to the Andes; the scenery is simply spectacular, and the train allows you to enjoy it in comfort. The +/- 3 hour trip takes us through a changing landscape with wonderful vistas of the mountains and, deep in its dramatic canyon, the beautiful Urubamba River. Our early arrival from Urubamba ensures that we are at the site before the tourist throngs arrive on the train from Cuzco later in the morning. Machu Picchu, popularly known as the 'Lost City of the Incas,' is an ancient city of stone palaces, towers, temples and staircases. It is a very mysterious place, and to this day our knowledge of it remains sketchy. There are no records or artifacts on the site to indicate what any of the buildings were used for. Archaeologists have ascertained that the site was most likely a ceremonial centre and possibly used for administrative purposes for the populous region. Upon arrival at the Aguas Calientes train station, a bus will take us on the 6 km (4 mile) twisting journey up the mountainside to the site of Machu Picchu. Having already dropped our baggage at our hotel, we proceed immediately for a 2-hour guided walking tour of Circuit 1 (the Upper Terrace route). After a break for lunch, we will then continue with another 2-hour guided walking tour, although this time we will be following Circuit 2B. During these guided tours, we will see, among other features: the Intihuatana pyramid, the Water mirrors complex, the Plaza of the Sacred Rock, and the prison-like Temple of the Condor. After our tours we will proceed back to our hotel. * PLEASE bring an overnight bag for this one night at Aguas Calientes as the train enforces strict luggage limits. Our larger bags will be transported back to Cuzco for us. Please also note that, due to group size limits, groups exceeding 15 participants will be split between two guides for today's site tour. Overnight at Agua Calientes (near Machu Picchu). Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Machu Picchu Area - Cuzco A large part of the beauty of Machu Picchu is created by its setting on a mountain top surrounded by deep valleys. By staying for a second day to visit Machu Picchu, rather than visiting as a day trip from Cuzco, we are able to savour the atmosphere of this very special place. In the early morning of our second day at Machu Picchu, some group members may choose to take the bus back up to the site with the weather-dependent hope of seeing the mist-clad mountains greet the morning sun (an optional excursion). Weather notwithstanding, the best thing about going up the second day is being there early when there are fewer people, allowing time to "soak it in," as well as the opportunity to climb Huayna Picchu. During our time in the village below the site, we will also include a visit to the Manuel Chavez Ballon Site Museum, which focuses on the "discovery," excavation, and history of Macchu Picchu. On display are historical photos, including photos of Hiram Bingham at Machu Picchu shortly after he came across the ruins, informative write-ups on the construction of Machu Picchu and the life of the Incas, and artifacts found at the site. Outside the museum is a very lush botanical garden running along the river; some plants are labelled and there are a few short trails. This is a nice shady area to rest on a hot day and is an easy 25 minute walk from Aguas Calientes down the road leading to Machu Picchu. Later in the afternoon we board the VISTADOME train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo Station (1.5 hours) from where we bus back to Cuzco. * DUE TO strict limits on the number of visitors daily, if you elect to visit again today (optional - at your expense), you will need to book well advance online via www.ticketmachupicchu.com. You will need to choose the EARLIEST options for Machu Picchu only OR Machu Picchu & Huayna Picchu if you want to hike Huayna Picchu (a difficult walk). Overnight in Cuzco. Day 9 Cuzco Area This morning we visit some of the most important Inca sites in the Cuzco area. Sacsayhuaman is an impressive complex which, like so many others of that time, had both a religious and military purpose. The fortress known as the 'storehouse of the sun' incorporates some of the largest stones ever used in a building. The zig-zag walls represent the teeth of the sacred puma and provide an excellent defensive structure. The stones fit so perfectly together without mortar that not even moss can grow in the cracks! In the afternoon we return to Cuzco and enjoy a tour of the town. We visit Coricancha, the temple of the sun which was the most important location in the Inca empire. Entombed in the closed cloister of the Sto Domingo Church, these sacred walls were hidden from modern civilization until the colonial walls were brought down in 1950 by a powerful earthquake. We also visit the church of San Blas with its fabulously carved pulpit. Wandering the narrow streets of the San Blas artisan region we make our way to the cathedral which towers impressively over the Plaza Mayor. Inside we find precious paintings from the Cuzco School of Art, one of the most prolific of its era. This Inca city was laid out around a great central square in the shape of a puma, the god of lightning. Today, stone walls built by the Incas line most of Cuzco's central streets and form the foundations of colonial and modern buildings. The Inca buildings were so well built that the Spaniards simply knocked down the upper parts of the Inca temples and palaces and built their churches and mansions on top of the Inca walls. Shortly after the Spanish conquest, the capital was moved to Lima on the coast. Thus Cuzco has retained a wonderful, untouched colonial atmosphere. The culture is also very much alive here, and is evident in the music, clothing and handicrafts of the people. We have dinner at a local restaurant where we can try some typical Peruvian dishes. One may wish to try the "Pisco sour", a powerful drink made with a Peruvian liquor distilled from white grapes. Overnight in Cuzco. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Cuzco & Pisac This morning we visit the ruins at Tambo Machay, Puca Pucara and Qenko. The latter is an Inca sacrificial site carved with inscriptions. We continue to Pisac with its lively market where you will encounter traditionally dressed locals with whom you can barter for colourful craft items. You will see many unique Andean musical instruments as well as dazzling textiles. Peruvian woolen items are justifiably famous for their imaginative designs, based on Inca art and the local flora and fauna. You can buy sweaters and caps made from the extremely warm wool of alpacas and llamas. We return to Cuzco with balance of the day at leisure. Overnight in Cuzco. Day 11 Cuzco - Puerto Maldonado - Peruvian Amazon Today we fly to Puerto Maldonado to begin our Amazon adventure. We begin to experience the enchantment of the rainforest with a boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to arrive at our lodge.* After a short briefing, settle into your beautiful cabaña and enjoy your lunch in the dining room. Take a nap, followed by a refreshing tea time and get ready for the afternoon excursion. After gathering with your Inkaterra Explorer Guide, and embark on a guided walk along the trail system, into the Reserva Amazonica natural area, where you will discover the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the jungle environment, winding past impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco, and the strangely beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects. Enjoy dinner, served in the main dining room from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. After dinner, you may retire early to your own cabaña, or join us to talk about your experience in the rainforest, as you listen to the intriguing sounds of the jungle at night. * Your Tour Leader will bid you adieu at this point and hand you over to our local lodge staff who will manage all aspects of your Amazon experience. Day 12 Amazon Exploration New experiences are ahead and after taking a nutritious buffet breakfast, get ready for a trek through terra firma into the Tambopata National Reserve towards Lake Sandoval. Here you will understand why Madre de Dios is called the biodiversity capital of Peru, while learning about the Reserve’s conservation efforts and the lake’s formation. Navigate by dugout canoe across this mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, blue and yellow macaw, red howler monkey, black caiman, and one of the world’s biggest fresh water scaled fish, the paiche. Back to the lodge for lunch and, later, the canopy walkway & anaconda walk await. Take a 20-minute ride by outboard motorized canoe to the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway Interpretation Center where you will learn about its construction and the conservation projects of ITA-Inkaterra Asociación (NGO). Ascend one of the two 98-foot towers (30 m) and cross the 7 hanging bridges that connect the treetops at 91 ft high (28 m). Enjoy the breathtaking vistas and get the chance to watch white-throated toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, squirrel monkeys, and the three-toed sloth. You will learn about the fauna and flora of this flooded ecosystem. Overnight at a comfortable lodge. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 13 Puerto Maldonado - Lima - Departure Enjoy a full breakfast before departure. A 45-minute return trip by boat on the Madre de Dios River takes you to Puerto Maldonado, where you will visit the Butterfly House. Peru boasts the greatest variety of butterflies in the world, with 3,700 known species. Many of these can be seen at the Butterfly House, a showcase for the variety, beauty and adaptability of these fascinating insects. Later we transfer to the airport for our flight back to Lima. Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered throughout the year. The cool and dry season runs from May to October; outside this time you will encounter warmer but perhaps rainy / misty conditions in the mountains. Serious heat / humidity are only a consideration in Lima, though even there is is often foggy and cool. The lowlands (Amazon) are humid and rainy throughout the year.

Transport and Travel Conditions The Nazca excursion is run and organized by a local operator. Elsewhere, road transport by private air-conditioned motor coach, 24-36 seats depending on ultimate group size (see 'group size'). Numerous walking tours on uneven surfaces. Most of this tour occurs at high altitude and, though our itinerary spends a night at Yucay before climbing higher to Cuzco, some people are affected-check with your doctor. Activity Level: 2 These are particularly busy tours that feature a lot of moving around, sometimes by train and short journeys on local transport. Walking tours of towns and cities are leisurely but you should be prepared to be on your feet for several hours. DESCRIPTION See the mysterious Nazca Lines of the Nazca Desert in southern Peru on a 30-minute fly over, and get privileged views of the stylized figures of spiders, monkeys, fish, and hummingbirds scrathed on the surface of the arid plateau some time between 500 BC and 500 AD. According to legend, the lines can only be seen from the air, and your flight will take you over the high plateau of the desert where the figures were etched into the reddish earth when the ancient Nazca culture flourished. Due to the sheer quantity and continuity of the geoglyphs, the Nazca Lines are considered among the most important finds of the 20th century. You will see living creatures, including stylized plants and imaginary beings, as well as geometric figures that are several kilometers long. Believed to have had ritual astronomical functions, there are a number of theories behind the lines and their construction. Although you won’t solve their mystery, you will get to appreciate them from the sky, along with views of one of the driest places on earth.

Day Activity:

You will be picked up from your hotel in Nazca and taken in an air-conditioned vehicle to the aerodrome where you will board a light aircraft for a memorable Flight over Nazca Lines. A bilingual guide (English/Spanish) will accompany you on this tour. This flight over the Nazca Lines will cover the expanse of the stony Nazca desert, the surface of which is scarred by gigantic drawings and geometrical shapes. The flight lasts exactly 30 minutes and is the best way to see these fascinating lines and drawings that have intrigued people for years. Here, you will spot various figures drawn on the stony surface of the Nazca desert, representing animals and stylized plants, distributed in a huge labyrinth of lines, trapezes, triangles and hairsprings which have been preserved for almost 2000 years. They are the most incredible remains that an ancient culture has left behind. These designs, some of them as long as 500 meters, can be truly appreciated only from the sky at an altitude of 1,500 feet. Return to the aerodrome. At the end of the Flight, you will be dropped back your hotel in Nazca.

Day 1 International arrival in Lima

Our representative will meet you at the Lima International airport (Jorge Chavez) and drive you to your hotel.

There are no scheduled activities, so you will just make your check-in at the hotel and rest.

Note: We recommend that you arrive in Lima between 3 to 10 pm

Day 2 Lima Sightseeing tour

You will start with breakfast at the hotel. Once you finish, we will begin our tour around Lima around 10:00 am. You will receive a complete guided tour of colonial and modern Lima in our private vehicle  (minibus).

We will pass through different places, including the cathedral, which dates back to the year 1654. The main square, which still houses the bronze fountain originally built in 1650, and the Convent of San Francisco and its catacombs.

Known as the city of kings, Lima was founded in 1535 by Pizarro and rebuilt in 1991, the same year that UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site. One of the few cities in South America that preserve its colonial past.

Lima was the home of the Spanish viceroy during the time of colonization by the Spanishs.

For lunch, we will visit a nice restaurant in Miraflores, where we will enjoy first class Peruvian food. Then we will return to the hotel where you will spend the night.

Day 3 Lima to Ica and overflight Nazca Lines

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be picked up around 7:00 am by our representative and then you will embark in a private vehicle to Ica.

We will drive around 3 ½ hours, travelling some 325 km.(202 miles) south along the Panamerican Highway from Lima to Ica, through the arid desert and the gorgeous lush coastal oasis. We will be arriving at Ica around 11:00 hours approx.

You will fly over the Nazca lines from Ica. The flight will take 1 hour and 15 minutes. We offer you a flight over the nazca desert aboard a Cessna Caravan plane, leaving the city of Ica. 

This aerial tour will allow you to see the most spectacular Nazca drawings, such as the monkey, the hummingbird, the condor, the spider, the astronaut and many others.

In addition you will also see huge geometric designs and hundreds of lines that cross the Nazca plateau.

Then, we will be returning to the Ica airport. Once we arrive our representative will be waiting for you to transfer to the hotel in Ica.

You will have lunch at the Mossone restaurant before spending the night in Ica.

* Please note that the departure from the Nazca lines during the flight is from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (it will depend on weather conditions).

Optional Tours in Ica:

• Dune Buggy & Sand-board around Huacachina Oasis.

For the adventurous ones, we suggest dune buggy and tour around Sand-boarding Huacachina Oasis. Our buggy tour around the Huacachina desert is a very fun and adrenaline filled ride. Starting late in the afternoon at 4:00 pm, which is the perfect time during the day to take the tour, as the sun is bright enough to illuminate the landscape and enjoy sunset.

Day 4 Ballestas Islands and Paracas - Return to Lima

As usual we will pick you up from the hotel, this time at 7:00 am, next we will transfer you in our private vehicle to Paracas.

We will drive for about 60 km. (37 miles) north of Paracas. On the route you will see the fields of cultivation of some export products such as paprika, asparagus, artichokes, etc. 

We will arrive in Paracas to have a boat excursion to the Ballestas Islands to see thousands of birds, sea lions and seals in their natural surroundings.

The famous Candelabra design, a figure of the Nazca civilization engraved in the desert, can also be seen from the boat and on the final part of the journey to the Paracas national reserve. Where we will visit the Interpretation Center of the Paracas National Reserve, the Cathedral, Lagunilla Beach, Red Beach and Yumaque Beach to see the petrified dinosaur eggs (under study) and last but not least the Obelisk of Independence.

Later, around 2:30 pm we will be heading back to Lima, we are not staying in a Paracas hotel this time. Our arrival is programmed for 6:30 pm.

Once at Lima, you will be dropped off at your hotel where you will be spending the night.

Day 5 Flight to Cusco and Cusco through the city

Today, we will take you to the airport to have our flight to Cusco city, the ancient Inca capital of the Incas.

Upon arrival in Cusco, you will be received and transferred to your hotel. The morning will be free of activities, for you to be able to acclimatize.

We will have lunch at a local restaurant in Cusco. 

At 1:00 p.m, we will have a private guided city tour in Cusco. First, you will visit Coricancha, known as the Temple of Sun, the most important sanctuary during the Inca era.

Next, a visit to the Cathedral,  the most imposing and principal church in the main square.

The tour continues, with a short ride to Sacsayhuaman. This site is a megalithic work made by the Incas. It stands on a hill that looms over the city to the north – but even these massive stones have that extraordinary Inca perfection.

Our following destination is Qenqo, this site shows a unique limestone outcrop, which was used for religious purposes as well as a worship site.

The tour will end by visiting the military fortress of Puca Pucara and Tambomachay, water worship center.

Finally we will return to the hotel, where we will spend the night.

Day 6 Sacred Valley of the Incas

You will enjoy a typical Cusco breakfast at the hotel. Our full day excursion will start at 8:00 am. Our private car will be waiting for you to take you on a ride to the most important sites of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

In this 6 day tour, we will explore the beautiful landscapes of the magical Sacred Valley.

Beginning with a visit to the town of Pisac, known for its picturesque market. Here you will have the opportunity to see the beautiful Andean handicrafts and garments, the gorgeous silver work as well that will be on display for sale.

Afterwards, we will visit the impressive ruins of the Ollantaytambo fortress. This magnificent ancient site serves as a great viewpoint to gaze out over the valley. Originally this was a royal domain of Inca Pachacuti during the Inca Empire, to serve later as a stronghold for Manco Inca in the last Inca rebellion against the Spanish.

In the afternoon we will return to Cusco. Tonight we will spend the night at a Cusco Hotel too.

Day 7 Full Day Machu Picchu - Return to Cusco

Our last breakfast together will be at the hotel, before starting a full day excursion in Machu Picchu. We will head to the Poroy train station. You will take a train (Vistadome Train) to Aguas Calientes, where the hidden sanctuary of the Incas, Machu Picchu, is located.

The train ride is an attraction in itself, as much of the route winds along the river and mountain face, offering passengers spectacular views of the Andes.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, you will head to the bus station for a 25-minute ride to the inca citadel.

Once we reach at the archaeological site, you will participate in a guided tour around the complex, visiting the principal areas such as the Main Plaza, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Solar Clock (the most important preserved Intihuatana), the royal rooms, the Temple of the Three Windows, houses, warehouses, a large central square. The mountainside terraces overlook all of these places that are connected by narrow roads and passes.

At the end of the tour you will have time to wander around the archaeological site at your pleasure, take as many pictures as you want or do a different activity to complement your journey.

The lunch will be at the Sanctuary Lodge Restaurant that is located in Machu Picchu.

In the afternoon, we will take the late train to return back to Cusco. At your arrival, you will be received by our representative to take you to your Hotel in Cusco to have a well deserved rest.

Optional activities (not included in the price):

After finishing the tour at the ancient citadel, you will have enough time to do the following activities on your own.

• A one hour walk (approx.) to Puerta del Sol (Inti Punku).
• Climb the Huayna Picchu Mountain. We suggest the ascendant for the ones that are looking to close the visit with a more adventurous experience. From the mountain you will appreciate the immensity of the magnificent Machu Picchu, which is even more surprisingly high and distant from that spot.

Day 8 Depart from Cusco

Right after you’re ready, we will transfer you to the airport to take the flight back to Lima to take the connecting flight back home

Right at the heart of the dry Peruvian desert lies an incredible mystery that remained hidden in these vast lands for many years. The Nazca Lines are one of the wonders of the ancient world and still one of the greatest riddles yet to be solved in Peru.

You surely have heard of these gigantic geoglyphs located at the Nazca pampas though their real purpose is left to speculation since the information gathered about the site is little in comparison to this UNESCO World Heritage Site .

The Nazca Lines were studied for over 80 years and as far as we knew, research was still ongoing by international and national organizations. There are over 1,000 lines that look to depict different objects, humans, animals, plants, and other geometrical figures.

According to archeologists, the lines are over 2,000 years old and are traced back to the ancient Nazca culture, an important civilization that ruled these lands. However, it is uncertain to know whether these figures were traced to honor their gods or for ceremonial purposes. 

However, the mystery doesn’t stop there since the Nazca Lines were open to the craziest theories, where “portals to other dimensions” and “extraterrestrial spacecraft” look to find a meaning to these ancient figures.

In this blog, we’ll decode a few of the most mind-blowing theories about the Nazca Lines, as well as give you a major insight into the history and potential purpose of these 2,000-year-old geoglyphs.

Discovery of the Nazca Lines

As you may know, these enormous figures can only be fully appreciated from high above the clouds, which is why it wasn’t until Peruvian pilots reported them during their flights. 

However, the first person to acknowledge their existence was Pedro Cieza de Leon in 1547, who said that had encountered “some signs in the vast Nazca desert” though the report wasn’t taken into consideration and was later forgotten.

As the pilot reports resonated among historians and archeologists, Julio C. Tello, an important Peruvian archeologist carried out investigations on the site in 1929. In that same year, Paul Kosok, a North American anthropologist, also began to study these lines and was the one who traced them back to 550 A.D. 

Paul Kosok wasn’t alone in this project since the renowned Maria Reiche Neumann accompanied him along the way. Paul Kosok left the project in the 50s and Maria Reiche continued the work, she was the major researcher of the Nazca Lines.

Maria Reiche dedicated a great part of her life to the study, conservation, and awareness of these ancient relics. Thanks to her hard work, the Nazca lines were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. 

Recent Studies: 143 New Nazca Lines Discovered

The Yamagata University in Japan has been carrying out on-site investigations in the Nazca pamas since 2004. The team of scientists led by Masato Sakai discovered 143 new geoglyphs through fieldwork and analyzing high-resolution 3D data using IBM’s Artificial Intelligence Technology.

Apparently, these recently discovered lines date back to at least 100 B.C. and 300 A.D. The new figures vary in size and were categorized into two groups: 

- Type A. These are the largest lines on the site, reaching over 100 meters. These geoglyphs were traced back to the early Nazca culture period. - Type B.  Comprehends the smallest figures in the pampas, reaching less than 50 meters. The smallest of this group expanded to 5 meters and depicts a humanoid geoglyph holding a cane.

The research uncovered different figures that depict humanoids, animals, and abstract objects. They also identified smashed pottery, leading them to believe that these lines could have been used for rituals and ceremonies.

Meaning of the Nazca Lines: Theories and Assumptions

Ok, here’s the tricky part, there are hundreds of hypotheses about what the Nazca Lines could have served for. Therefore, we have no definitive theory about these ancient geoglyphs, which is why some of them may sound historical and archaeological correct while others… don’t. Here you’ll see for yourself:

1. Maria Reiche. The famous German-born Peruvian mathematician stated that the carvings represented an astronomical calendar, where each figure would represent an event or a group of stars. 

2. Robin Edgar. This independent researcher and self-styled astronomer maintained that the Nazca lines were meant to be seen by the “eye of god” or “eye in the sky” which is seen during total solar eclipses. He held that the figures were a form of communication with gods or even offerings.

3. Johann Reinhard. The American researcher said that the Nazca lines were related to water-cult rituals due to the extreme aridity of the desert, which is why they carved these figures on the ground to implore the gods for rain.

4. Erich Von Däniken . It is one of the wildest theories about the Nazca lines, and honestly, one that has resonated through time, which you probably know about. Erich’s hypothesis holds that the Nazca lines were an ancient landing site for an extraterrestrial spacecraft.

Aliens supposedly imparted the local people with special knowledge and technology before returning to their home planet. For that reason, the ancient astronauts were seen as gods by the Nazca culture and carved these geoglyphs to honor them.

These are a few of the many theories that surround the famous Nazca geoglyphs, some of them may sound very likely to have happened. Unfortunately, aliens or not, the Nazca Lines will remain a mystery until a new lead is found.

How to See the Nazca Lines?

As you may know, the region of Nazca is located 400 km south of Lima, which is why we highly recommend you visit the main attractions on the way to the city before getting there.

To fully appreciate the Nazca Lines, it’s best to take a flight over the region. That way you’ll get to see the 15 most famous and recognizable figures in the area. The flight over the Nazca lines is one of the most sought-after activities in the Peruvian desert, so make sure to book in advance.

You could also get to see 2 or 3 Nazca Lines (depending on the weather conditions) from a viewing tower located 15 minutes away from the Nazca city. Keep in mind that you would have to organize it on your own since there is no touristic transportation to this location unless arranged beforehand.

Combining the Galapagos with Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines is an excellent way to experience the best of Ecuador and Peru. You will begin in Quito and then travel to the Galapagos Islands for a four day cruise aboard the Galapagos Legend, where you will observe plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth. In Peru, you will visit Lima, the Nazca Lines, and Ballestas Islands before finishing in Cusco, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, and Machu Picchu.

Lodging and Meals: This tour includes accommodations for 14 nights (2 nights in Quito, 3 nights on the Galapagos Legend, 4 nights in Lima, 1 night in Paracas, 3 nights in Cusco, and 1 night in Machu Picchu) and 23 meals (14 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 4 dinners).

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Note: The route and program may vary according to National Park policies and regulations, weather conditions, seasonal changes, safety reasons and wildlife encounters. Dry Landing: Guests step from the dinghy directly onto rocks or a dock. Wet Landing: As the dinghy edges onto a sandy beach, guests step into knee-deep water and wade ashore.

Day 1 (Sat): Quito.

Depart to Quito. After passing through immigration and customs, proceed to the reception area, where our representative will be holding a sign with your name on it. You will be greeted and then transferred to your hotel.

Day 2 (Sun): City Tour of Quito-Middle of the World.

In the morning, you will have a city tour of Quito. You will explore the bustling streets and squares of the largest historical centre in the Americas, and visit some of its most important churches such as the majestic La Compania and iconic San Francisco, guardians of a stunning multi-ethnic artistic and cultural heritage. You will drive through the traditional neighborhood of San Juan and finish the morning at the Panecillo hillside, with its breathtaking views of the old and modern parts of the city.

Following the city tour, you will be driven to the “Middle of the World City” complex, which is located 11 miles north of Quito. Here, you will see the monument of the equatorial line, a 98 ft high stone trapezoidal monument with a brass globe on top. The monument forms the focal point of a park and leisure area with gift shops and restaurants. Overnight in Quito. (B)

Day 3 (Mon): Quito-Baltra Airport-Bartolome.

Morning transfer to the airport in Quito for the flight to Galapagos.  Passengers are picked up at the airport by our guides and taken on a ten minute bus ride to the pier to board the M/V Galapagos Legend.

Bartolome (dry or wet landing).  You discover a fascinating landscape formed by different volcanic parasitic cones – lava bombs, spatter, cinder cones – that resemble the moon.  Going up to the summit there will be impressive views of the surrounding islands, including the eroded tuff cone Pinnacle Rock.  You also encounter marine iguanas, lava lizards, and blue-footed boobies.

Beach time is a great opportunity to do snorkeling and see the famous Galapagos Penguins, sea turtles and White-tipped Reef Sharks among a great variety of colorful fish.  For many visitors, this may turn out to be the best snorkeling experience.  Crystal clear water is the perfect spot to appreciate the incredible marine life it has to offer.  Due to its geographical location, the lack of vegetation is immediately noticeable however, there are pioneer plants including the endemic Tiquilia nesiotica and Chamaesyce (known as sand mat or spurge in English), lava cactus, and Scalesia bushes.  (Duration: 1.5 hour walk/one hour snorkeling).  Overnight aboard the ship.  (B,L,D)

Day 4 (Tue): South Plaza Islet-North Seymour.

South Plaza Islet (dry landing).  There are two Plaza Islets (north and south) located east of Santa Cruz Island.  On the northern part of the Islet, visitors begin the journey along an impressive cactus forest where colorful yellow and red land iguanas live, the population number is around 300 animals; during the dry season they survive on fruits and flowers of the opuntia cacti.  A peculiar thing to see in South Plaza is the hybrid iguana (sea and land).  When reaching the highest point, tropicbirds can be seen.  During the dry season (June-January) the usually greenish and yellowish vegetation changes color creating a bright red landscape (sesuviumedmonstonei plant).  (Duration: 2 hour walk).

North Seymour Island (dry landing).  Off of Baltra Island and not far from Santa Cruz, North Seymour is located.  This landmass was formed by a series of underwater volcanic eruptions, which deposited layers of lava on the ocean floor.  You will have an approximately two-hour walk amidst large nesting colonies of blue-footed boobies, magnificent and great frigate birds, and swallow-tailed gulls for an in depth encounter with sea bird breeding cycles and sea lions.  You will also encounter land iguanas, and on a lucky day, you might even come across the endemic Galapagos Snake.  (Duration: 2 hour walk, 30 minute snorkeling).  Overnight aboard the ship.  (B,L,D)

Day 5 (Wed): Pitt Point & Islet-Cerro Brujo (San Cristobal).

Pitt Point & Islet (wet landing) followed by a high-intensity hike on rocky terrain.  The trail includes a 90 meters long, olivine beach and a path that climbs to the top of a volcanic tuff, through several magnificent viewpoints.  This is probably the only site where the three booby species of the Galapagos can be seen together, as well as, two species of frigate birds and a sea lion colony.  It is also excellent for dinghy rides and snorkeling, where a good range of sea birds can be observed.  (Duration : 2.5 hour walk/40 minute snorkeling & kayaking).

Cerro Brujo (wet landing).  Cerro Brujo is an eroding tuff cone that at several locations is composed of AA lava formations and a beautiful white sandy beach, great for snorkeling and sunbathing.  There is a lagoon visit where migratory bird species can be seen: Black-necked Stilts, Ruddy Turnstones, Whimbrels, other sandpiper species and White-cheeked Pintails.  Cerro Brujo offers beautiful views of Kicker Rock, the southern part of San Cristobal and the adjacent coast.  (Duration: one hour walk/one hour snorkeling).  Overnight aboard the ship.  (B,L,D)

Day 6 (Thu): Puerto Baquerizo Moreno-Cerro Colorado Tortoise Reserve (San Cristobal)-San Cristobal Airport-Guayaquil.

Dry landing in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno which is the capital of the Galapagos Islands.  Passengers will visit the Cerro Colorado Giant Tortoise Reserve to learn about the National Park’s conservation programs.  Passengers will also have the opportunity to visit the port village, have a drink, or shop for arts and crafts and other souvenirs.  (Duration: 40 minute bus ride to the Reserve/one hour visit).

After the visit you will go to San Cristobal Airport for your flight to Guayaquil. You will be greeted and then transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Guayaquil. (B)

Day 7 (Fri): Guayaquil-Lima-City Tour.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima, Peru. After passing through immigration and customs, proceed to the reception area, where our inbound services representative will be holding a sign with your name on it. You will be greeted and then transferred to your hotel.

In the afternoon, you will have a city tour of Lima. The tour begins in Miraflores with a stop at the Parque del Amor, a seaside park with a huge statue of a kissing couple and continues with a drive by of the Huaca Huallamarca, a restored adobe pyramid dating from the pre-Inca period located in San Isidro. The next stop is the Plaza de Armas in downtown Lima, where you will visit City Hall (Palacio Municipal), the Government Palace (Palacio de Gobierno), and the Cathedral of Lima. The last stop is the Convent of Santo Domingo. Following the tour, you will be returned to your hotel. Overnight in Lima. (B)

Day 8 (Sat): Lima-Pisco-Nazca Lines-Paracas.

Shuttle bus transfer from Lima to the airport in Pisco for the overflight of Nazca Lines, a series of geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert in Southern Peru. The Nazca Lines were created by the Nazca culture between 400 and 650 AD and consist of hundreds of lines ranging from simple lines to animal figures, including monkeys, hummingbirds, spiders, and lizards. They were named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. After the flight, you will be taken to your hotel in Paracas. Overnight in Paracas. (B)

Day 9 (Sun): Paracas-Candelabra-Ballestas Islands-Lima.

In the morning, you will be transferred to the Paracas Harbor for a boat tour of the Ballestas Islands. During this tour, you will see the Paracas Candelabra, a giant geoglyph etched on the coastal hills. The Ballestas Islands are teeming with wildlife, including large colonies of sea lions, guanay cormerants, the Peruvian booby, and the Peruvian pelican, as well as zarcillos, Humboldt penguins, and Chilean flamingos. At the end of the tour, you will return to Paracas Harbor and then be transferred by shuttle bus to Lima. Overnight in Lima. (B)

Day 10 (Mon): Lima-Cusco-City Tour.

Early morning transfer to the airport for the flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. Because of the high altitude (10,912 feet above sea level), we recommend that you rest for a short period. In the afternoon, you will have a city tour that includes a walk-through of the Cathedral, the Koricancha (‘site of gold’), typical streets, and the four ruins that surround the city: the Sacsayhuaman Fortress, Kenko, Puca Pucara, and Tampumachay. Overnight in Cusco. (B)

Day 11 (Tue): Cusco-Sacred Valley-Awanakancha-Pisac Market-Ollantaytambo.

Today you will have a full-day excursion to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The tour begins at Awanakancha, a living museum of the Peruvian Andes, where you can observe traditional textile dyeing and weaving techniques and the four types of camelids that are native to the region. You will also visit the Indian artisan market in Pisac and have lunch at a local restaurant (included). The last stop is the impressive Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo that served as both a fortress and ceremonial center, and is the site of a short-lived victory by the Incas over the Spanish. Overnight in Cusco. (B,L)

Note: The Indian market is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from October to March, and daily from April to September. On the days of the week that the market is not open, you will be taken to the Inca ruins above the village.

Day 12 (Wed): Cusco-Machu Picchu.

Early morning transfer to the train station for the ride to Machu Picchu, ‘the Lost City of the Incas’ (7,900 feet). This mountaintop citadel, which served as both a center of worship and an astronomic observatory, is located in the middle of the cloud forest overlooking the Urubamba River. There are both agricultural and urban areas constructed with the precision stonework that the Incas are known for. The agricultural area consists of terraces and food storehouses, and the urban area contains temples, squares, and royal tombs. Guided tour followed by lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge. In the afternoon, you will be transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Machu Picchu. (B,L)

Day 13 (Thu): Machu Picchu-Cusco.

This is a free day to explore Machu Picchu on your own. You may want to hike Huayna Picchu or enjoy another activity. Mid-afternoon, you will depart from Machu Picchu by train to Poroy Station in the Sacred Valley, and then be taken to your hotel in Cusco. Overnight in Cusco. (B)

Day 14 (Fri): Cusco-Lima-Larco Museum-Folkloric Dinner Show.

Morning transfer to the airport for your flight back to Lima. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon, you will visit the Larco Museum. In the evening, you will enjoy a Folkloric Dinner Show at La Dama Juana Restaurant. Overnight in Lima. (B,D)

Day 15 (Sat): Lima.

Check out at noon. Transfer to the airport for your return flight to your final destination. (B)

A Note About Your Free Day in Machu Picchu

On your free day, you will be on your own. If you choose to revisit Machu Picchu, you will need to purchase a second entrance ticket, which currently costs $74 per person. If you are staying in Aguas Calientes, you will also need to purchase a round-trip bus ticket ($28 per person) for transportation to the site. The first bus departs at 5:30 AM. As an alternative to visiting Machu Picchu again, you can hike Huayna Picchu (a +/- 60 minute hike), or partake in another activity. The cost for hiking Huayna Picchu is $13 (in addition to the second entrance ticket). At the end of the day (mid-late afternoon), you will walk to the train station for the return ride to Poroy train station, where our local representative will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel in Cusco.

Group Private: All services included in Quito and Galapagos are operated on a group basis. In Peru, all transfers (except on the Nazca Lines excursion) are private, and the city tour of Lima, city tour of Cusco, Sacred Valley of the Incas excursion, and Machu Picchu guided tour are group tours for single passengers and 3 Star accommodations, and private for 4 Star, 5 Star, and Deluxe accommodations. The Nazca Lines overflight and Ballestas Islands boat tour are group tours. The Larco Museum visit is private.

Elevations: Quito is 9,350 feet above sea level, Cusco is 10,912 feet, the Sacred Valley of the Incas is 8,944 feet, and Machu Picchu is 7,900 feet.
