The 5 Best Motorcycle Roads in Florida

Motorcycle Nerd

Florida is considered the paradise of the south, but it’s not all Disney and retirement communities. There’s a reason why people travel there on vacation, and to literally spend the rest of their lives: the climate is warm, the beaches are sparkling, and the people are hospitable. But have you yet considered tackling one of the many amazing motorcycle roads in Florida?

We’ll start by saying this: You should be an experienced rider to take your motorcycle to Florida. It’s not that Floridians are aggressive drivers and there are biker-hunger crocodiles, but the state itself is not known for being the safest for bikers. This is not to egg you on (although you’re probably enjoying the challenge,) but rather to say, to really enjoy the Sunshine State you should be a skilled rider, willing to share the road, and ready to have the ride of your life.

Ozello Trail Route

Ozello Trail Ride route map view

Ozello Trail Ride Route

This is ranked the #1 motorcycle route for bikers in Florida, and for good reason. You’re going to start in a town called Cutlers, north of Homosassa Springs and off of US Highway 19. Here you’ll find the beginning of W. Ozello Trail, otherwise known as State Route 494.

Ozello Trail road and lake view

The route is famous for its scenic waterways, twisting roads, and so much more. It’s a hidden little route that stretches about 60 miles north of Tampa and provides some of the best Gulf Coast riding imaginable. Be sure to stop for lunch at Pecks Port Cove and dine al fresco on the water. Oysters and hush puppies. Um, yes.

Casey Key Beach Route

Casey Key Beachside Route in Florida

Casey Key Beachside Route

Your route will begin at Nokomis, off of US41. You want to locate Albee Road West, or you can start at Blackburn Point. Begin your journey toward the Gulf, and from Blackburn Point head south (from Albee Road head north). This isn’t a long ride, but it takes you along the beach with amazing views of charming houses and the immaculate scenery of Florida’s west coast.

Casey Key Beach View (Image: Youtube )

We’ll note again here that Florida’s beach roads aren’t known for being perfect, but they’re on par and offer unsurpassed views. You’ll enjoy beach horizons on both sides of the road.

Citrus County 476

Citrus County 476 Motorcycle Route in Florida

Citrus County 476 Route

Start at US 19 north of Weeki Wachee, just south of Homasassa. Go east on 476 to Lake Lindsey Road (which is still 476) and cross US 41 to Bushnell. Continue past Bushnell and enjoy the gentle, curving, tree-encased road which unfolds to farmland and vistas. Riders will benefit from light traffic on this road, and it’s well marked and in great condition. Cross the Withlacoochee River and dine at Ratz Ass, a biker-friendly establishment. Note that there are few stopping places along this route, a number of good restaurants at the Withlacoochee River, and a county park just past US 41. Travel conveniently between Tampa and Crystal River, and gaze at some of the most diverse scenery that Florida has to offer.

North Tampa Circuit

North Tampa Circuit Motorcycle Route in Florida

North Tampa Circuit Route

You’re going to begin at Land O Lakes, Florida (and you thought it was just butter.) Start at SR-54 and Collier Parkway. This winds through north Tampa county and up to Brooksville, just east to Trilby, south to Dade City and Zephyrhills, then back west to Land O Lakes. See some of Florida’s most unique views, such as horse and cattle ranches and expansive orange groves. In the spring, take pictures of the orange blossoms and breathe in the sweet aroma in the air. Florida isn’t the hilliest of states, but there are a few places along this route that will surprise you. The roads are in good condition, but there are a couple spots along here that are narrow and a little bumpy, so proceed with caution (pebbles, too.) You’re riding through the countryside so there aren’t a whole lot of amenities, but be sure to visit Stef’s Southern Soul Restaurant in Dade City. In a word: fried chicken. Well, two words.

Looking Downhill in North Tampa Florida

Don’t consider this a destination ride from point A to point B. This is a fine combination ride with twisties and sweepers in some places. You’ll also benefit from nice, relaxing, straight cruising roads. You can make the whole circuit on a full tank of gas without needing to refill, but if you take some detours then you might need to top off before the end. The early morning is the best time to take this route as there won’t be as much traffic.

Scenic SR-13 Route

Scenic SR-13 Motorcycle Route near Jacksonville, Florida

Just south of Jacksonville, SR-13 is known as a great place for motorcycles. If you’re coming from the north, take I-295 to the SR-13 exit in Jacksonville. It begins as a busy 6-lane highway, but once you cross the Duval-St. Johns County line it begins to narrow to 4 lanes, eventually becoming a 2-lane country road. It starts as a rather plain ride, but it opens up as you go along. If you come from the south, the route starts just a few miles northeast of Hastings, Florida, off SR-207.

Shady Trees along the Florida Beach

There are several small communities along the way, as well as parks, live oaks, and other shady trees which make this route a delight. This isn’t a twisty road for the most part, as it lazily follows the peaceful river. It’s nicely paved, so you’re not going to have to deal with rough spots or pot holes. Stop at a restaurant or local store along the way, or even better, bring a picnic lunch and enjoy one of the many serene parks.

Florida has a lot to offer motorcycle riders, but always keep your eyes on the road. Beaches, countryside, orange groves, golf courses, and even swamps beckon. There’s so much to see and do, and it’s a lot more exciting when you do it on your motorcycle. Why not pop into Disney World (yes, they allow motorcyclists in,) or head to Cape Canaveral and watch someone blast off to the moon. When you take your motorcycle through Florida, the world is your oyster.

Florida Motorcycle Routes

Share the Love

Florida is one of the best states for owning a motorcycle. In the winter, there’s no snow to keep you from hitting the pavement. And in the summer, you can enjoy the ocean’s breeze as you ride. There’s no shortage of great motorcycle routes in Florida, so find out where you should go for a scenic ride on the next sunny day.

Which Are The Top Motorcycle Routes In Florida?

There’s a lot to explore in the Sunshine State! All of the following are fun rides for anyone with a motorcycle and a desire to explore.

Where To Ride In South Florida

If there’s one thing South Florida is known for, it’s partying. But the area is also home to beautiful weather and beaches, which means there are several great routes. If you’re interested in a multi-day tour, you can kick off in Miami and head south towards the keys. You can also opt to go north from there and check out the Atlantic coastline. For shorter trips, consider exploring the streets of South Beach or other nearby areas.

Miami to Mile Zero : This ride departs from Peterson’s Harley-Davidson in Miami and heads all the way to the most southern part in the Keys. It’s a total of 174 miles.

Tamiami Trail : Once again, this trip starts at the Peterson’s Harley-Davidson in Miami. It goes for 113 miles to the Naples Pier, so pack your swimsuit.

Where To Ride In Central Florida

The pine trees and Spanish moss of central Florida make it a one-of-a-kind place to ride your motorcycle. Along some of the routes, you might feel like you’re in a fairytale. Other routes allow you to see unique wildlife or stunning springs.

Ocala National Forest : Because Ocala National Forest is large and has decent roads, it’s the perfect place for a bike ride. You can start this route at Caravelle Ranch and finish at the Pittman Visitors Center for a 45 mile ride.

Ozello Trail : Sometimes, the best ride is a short and sweet one. Although the Ozello Trail is only ten miles, it’s breathtakingly beautiful. Located in Crystal River, the road is winding and often referred to as the most beautiful stretch of road in Florida.

Sugarloaf Mountain : While there might not be any real mountains in Florida, Sugarloaf Mountain is as close as it gets. This ride takes you to the highest point on Florida’s peninsula. Stop at some charming towns and take in the view.

Where To Ride In The Panhandle

As you approach the Georgia state line, you approach some of the best highways for motorcycles. You also have the beaches that differ so greatly from what you find further south. Furthermore, the area is the place to go for southern hospitality.

Hosford Highway : Take a 70 mile ride on this highway by starting at Quincy and Ending in Eastpoint. It’s a great ride to clear your head and enjoy your motorcycle.

Where To Ride In Tampa Bay

Can you think of a better way to see the Tampa area than by motorcycle? Choose from any number of routes and you can enjoy spectacular views of the Gulf. If you head slightly inland, you’re sure to find farmland and other surprises.

Green Swamp Tour : This 77 mile ride takes you through swampy terrain. The ride commences at the intersection of I-75 and Highway 50, which is only slightly north of Tampa. After riding through swampland, you eventually make it to the end of the ride at Zephyrhills.

Von Hoak Loop : About 15 miles east of Tampa, you can begin this ride. It takes you along several roads and lasts for about 23 miles. You’ll pass through a few scenes that seem to be from a storybook – a bridge over a creek, Victorian houses, and small hills.

Where To Ride In Southwest Florida

Home to beaches, growing towns, and million dollar vacation homes, Southwest Florida is one of the top destinations for motorcyclists. If you go in the winter, you can enjoy comfortable riding temperatures and a beautiful breeze. The summer is also a great time to go for a ride because it doesn’t rain as much as it does on the east coast. Whenever you go, you can know you’ll experience great views.

Manatee and Sarasota County Coastline : For a quick ride, begin at Manatee public beach and go 37 miles towards Nokomis Beach. Before and after you ride, check out some of the local shops and restaurants.

Marco Island : Also known as scenic ride 16 , this route starts at the Naples exit of I-75. You travel through Naples and all of its class, and then end up on a tour of Marco Island. As you check out the coast, you can also see some of the most stunning mansions in Florida.

Where To Ride In The Space Coast

If you think the Space Coast is only about the Kennedy Space Center, think again. It’s also a place to clear your head while you ride your motorcycle. If you want a coastal ride, you can just hop on your bike and travel north or south from Daytona. But there are also some other great rides in the area, some of which take you through areas loaded with wildlife.

Merritt Island to New Smyrna : Merritt Island is home to some of the most unique birds in Florida, so bring your binoculars for this ride. It begins in Merritt Island and goes across the causeway, then takes you to Titusville. Although the ride ends at a busy beach, this ride has a country feel to it.

Where To Ride In North Florida

If riding through roads lined with oaks and rivers sounds appealing to you, check out the northern motorcycle routes in Florida. The roads near Jacksonville take you through historic towns and picturesque waterways. As you ride through roads lined with oak trees and Spanish moss, you might feel like you’re in another country.

St. Johns River : Take in some of the history of the area by riding for 55 miles on SR-13. This ride starts out in Jacksonville and brings you through small villages. Although the ride ends in Spuds, Florida, you can continue on for miles.

Where To Ride In The Florida Keys

When it comes to motorcycle routes in Florida, the Florida Keys needs no introduction. U.S 1 runs along the entirety of the keys. You can stop almost anywhere along the route and experience the Caribbean flair of the most southern parts of Florida. If you make it all the way to Key West, don’t miss out on Mallory Square.

LGBT Motorcycle Riders in Florida

Now that you know the best routes in Florida, where can you go to enjoy the company of other LGBT motorcycle riders in Florida ? There’s a large community of riders throughout the state. Even in the conservative areas, you can find open-minded riders.

Whether you join a club or meet up with locals at a gay bar, you can enjoy the company of other LGBT motorcycle riders. More importantly, you can get on your motorcycle and appreciate stunning routes. Check out our complete guide to LGBTQ motorcycling in Florida .

Top 10 Best Motorcycle Rides in Florida: Discovering Breathtaking Routes

' src=

There’s nothing quite like hitting the open road on a motorcycle, and Florida is no exception. This state is a motorcycling haven, offering scenic routes all around that showcase its natural beauty, sunny skies, and warm weather.

To start off, you don’t have to worry about harsh weather conditions like snow or ice, making Florida an ideal destination for year-round motorcycle adventures. The diverse terrain, from coastal views and tropical getaways to twisting turns and historic landmarks, provides endless opportunities for riders to explore and discover.

With its year-round warm climate and scenic coastal roads, Florida provides some truly iconic motorcycle rides. The Overseas Highway from Miami to Key West is perhaps the most notable, with its expansive sea views and long, continuous stretches of road. Just to the north, Georgia offers the Suches Loop , known as ‘Georgia’s Dragon,’ providing challenging turns and a completely different type of natural beauty. Meanwhile, Alabama, located to the northwest, entices riders with the scenic Little River Canyon Rides that offer sweeping river canyon views. So, rev up your engine, grab your helmet, and let’s hit the road as I share with you the Top 10 Best Motorcycle Rides in Florida that cater to all riding levels and preferences.

best motorcycle road trip in florida

1. Overseas Highway

Overseas Highway

There’s something special about cruising down the Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West. This 113-mile journey is a top pick for motorcycle enthusiasts seeking a scenic and unforgettable ride. Let me break down the details of this fantastic journey.

Best Time to Visit: Late fall to early spring is the ideal time to take this ride, as you’ll avoid the summer heat and humidity, as well as hurricane season. Temperatures between November and April generally range between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, making for perfect riding weather.

Places to Stop:

  • John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park: Located in Key Largo, it’s a great place to start your adventure. As the first undersea park in the United States, it offers beautiful views, snorkeling, and diving opportunities.
  • Bahia Honda State Park: A picturesque park, known for its white sandy beaches and sparkling waters. It provides a perfect spot for a mid-ride break.
  • Seven Mile Bridge: This iconic bridge provides unbeatable views of the surrounding water and islands.
  • Key West: The southernmost point of the United States, you can visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, tour the historic district, or relax on one of its famous beaches.

Level of Difficulty: I’d say it’s an easy ride, suitable for riders of all levels. The road is well-maintained and relatively flat. However, there may be occasional crosswinds across the bridges, so moderate caution is advised.

Other Information:

  • Tolls: There are no tolls on the Overseas Highway.
  • Fuel availability: You’ll find plenty of gasoline stations along the route, so it’s not necessary to worry about running out of fuel.
  • Lodging: Numerous hotels, motels, and campgrounds are available across the Florida Keys, catering to different budgets and preferences.

2. Loop Road

Loop Road

Whenever you want a scenic and exhilarating ride, Loop Road through the Big Cypress National Preserve never disappoints. It’s one of the most captivating motorcycle routes in Florida. Weaving through 27 miles of lush landscape, this ride offers not only picturesque views but also an opportunity to encounter diverse wildlife.

Best Time to Visit : The ideal time to embark on this epic ride is during the cooler months from November to April . During this time, the weather is pleasant, and it’s more comfortable to ride through the swampy areas of the preserve.

Distance and Time to Travel : Loop Road is 27 miles long and takes about 1-1.5 hours to cover, depending on your riding speed and the number of stops you take along the way.

Places to Stop : As you ride, you’ll come across some noteworthy stops worth checking out:

  • Monroe Station : A historic landmark that served as a place for fuel and lodging for early motorists.
  • Sweetwater Strand : An excellent spot for photography with its unique landscape and mirror-like water reflections.
  • H.P. Williams Roadside Park : A perfect place to rest, enjoy a picnic or even spot an alligator or two.

Level of Difficulty : The ride along Loop Road is moderate in terms of difficulty. While the road itself is mostly paved and well-maintained, it can get quite curvy and narrow at certain points. This calls for greater attention on the rider’s part, especially when navigating tight twists and turns.

Other Information : It’s essential to keep in mind the following points while cruising through the Big Cypress National Preserve:

  • Be cautious of wildlife. Alligators, snakes, and bears are often found near the road.
  • Carry plenty of water and sunscreen to combat the heat and stay hydrated.
  • Some areas can get quite swampy, especially during the wet season, so make sure your bike is equipped to handle such conditions.

3. The Ormond Scenic Loop

The Ormond Scenic Loop

When looking for an exhilarating ride, I highly recommend The Ormond Scenic Loop . Known for its beautiful scenery, this 30-mile loop offers fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean and lush Florida vegetation. It’s not only a favorite amongst experienced riders, but beginners will also find it enjoyable and accessible.

Best Time to Visit : The Ormond Scenic Loop is an excellent ride all year round. However, the best time to visit is during spring or fall, when temperatures are milder, and the weather is more predictable. You’ll find fewer crowds during these seasons, making for a more enjoyable ride. During the summer, it can get quite hot. So, with Florida’s unpredictable storms, taking a quick break is always a good idea when conditions become uncomfortable.

Distance and Time to Travel : The Ormond Scenic Loop covers approximately 30 miles and takes about 1-2 hours to complete at a comfortable pace. Of course, if you choose to stop and explore the many attractions along the way, it may take longer.

Places to Stop : While cruising along the loop, you’ll find several fascinating places worth stopping for:

  • Ormond Beach: Relax on the beautiful sandy beach or take a dip in the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Bulow Creek State Park: Check out some of the largest southern live oak trees in Florida and wander the trails through this lush wetland.
  • Tomoka State Park: A haven for birdwatchers, this park is also home to the Tomoka River, perfect for kayaking or fishing.

Level of Difficulty : The Ormond Scenic Loop boasts smooth, well-maintained roads, making it an easy ride for both beginners and experienced riders. With its gentle curves and minimal elevation changes, it’s an excellent choice for riders of all skill levels.

Other Information : As you ride along the Ormond Scenic Loop, keep an eye out for wildlife and marine life that call the area home. It’s not uncommon to spot manatees, dolphins, and various bird species. Additionally, there are several seafood restaurants and local shops in the area where you can grab a bite to eat and buy some souvenirs.

4. A1A: St. Augustine to Daytona Beach

A1A: St. Augustine

Riding along A1A from St. Augustine to Daytona Beach offers an absolute treat for motorcycle enthusiasts seeking scenic beauty and coastal charm. It’s an unforgettable journey that showcases the best of northeast Florida’s coastal terrain and historic sites.

Best Time to Visit : The prime time for this picturesque ride is during the spring and fall months , when the weather is mild with comfortable temperatures. These seasons provide optimal riding conditions and fewer tourists congesting the roads.

Distance and Time to Travel : Covering approximately 60 miles in distance, this route can be comfortably completed in about 1.5 to 2 hours without stopping. However, I’d highly recommend taking your time and making stops at the remarkable spots you’ll encounter along the way.

Places to Stop : Some must-see locations along A1A include:

  • St. Augustine : Known as the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine offers rich history, fascinating museums, and eye-catching Spanish colonial architecture.
  • Flagler Beach : A quaint seaside town with beautiful beach views, an inviting pier, and charming local shops and cafes.
  • Ormond Beach : A quiet beach area and home to the picturesque Ormond Scenic Loop, perfect for a pleasant detour.
  • Daytona Beach : The world-famous beach destination famous for its motorsports events, lively boardwalk, and excellent dining options.

Level of Difficulty : A1A is a moderate-level ride that is relatively easy to navigate. It’s recommended for riders of all skill levels, as the traffic conditions are generally light and the road is well-maintained.

Other Information : Keep in mind that while the ride itself is stunning, there may be some sections with limited shoulder space and tight turns. Therefore, it’s essential to remain vigilant and always exercise caution when riding.

5. Sugarloaf Mountain Road: Central Florida

Sugarloaf Mountain Road

When looking for great motorcycle rides in Florida, Sugarloaf Mountain Road in Central Florida is not to be missed. Let me share some information about this fantastic spot for your next motorcycle adventure.

Best Time to Visit: Honestly, Florida’s weather allows for year-round riding, but the optimal time to visit is between October and April. During these months, you’ll enjoy mild temperatures and less rainfall, making your ride even more pleasurable.

Distance with Time to Travel: Sugarloaf Mountain Road is approximately 11 miles long, with an estimated 30-45 minutes of leisurely riding time. This route features a series of rolling hills, as well as few elevations, rare in the state, which further enhances your riding experience.

Places to Stop: Along the route, you’ll come across several great spots for breaks. A few favorites are:

  • Lake Apopka: Florida’s fourth-largest lake, offering beautiful views, fishing piers, and hiking trails.
  • Green Mountain Scenic Byway: A lovely side trip with panoramic views of Lake Apopka and surrounding areas.
  • Ferlita’s Bakery & Ice Cream Parlor: A local gem with delicious pastries and ice cream, perfect for a quick treat.

Level of Difficulty: This ride is suitable for intermediate to experienced riders. Sugarloaf Mountain Road does have some tight curves and elevations, so it’s important to be cautious and confident with your skills.

Other Information: While the area is quite rural, you’ll find a few convenience stores and gas stations along the way. Besides, it’s worth mentioning that cell service can be spotty in some spots, so ensure you plan your route beforehand or have a GPS device handy.

6. SR 13: Along the St. Johns River

SR 13: Along the St. Johns River

In Florida, there’s no shortage of beautiful motorcycle rides, but one of my favorites has got to be SR 13 — a picturesque route that follows the St. Johns River. This amazing ride combines stunning natural beauty, captivating historical sites, and charming little towns, making it a truly unforgettable journey.

Best time to visit: Fall and spring are the most enjoyable seasons to ride along SR 13, when temperatures are mild and comfortable. However, the ride is suitable year-round, so long as you’re prepared for the usual summer heat and humidity, or possibly cooler winter temps.

Distance with time to travel: Covering approximately 60 miles, it takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the ride, not counting any stops you might want to make, of course!

Places to stop: SR 13 is filled with delightful stopping points:

  • Shands Bridge – This iconic historical structure offers beautiful views of the St. Johns River;
  • Bartram Trail – A series of markers along the route commemorate the journey of famed naturalist William Bartram;
  • Rivertown Park – A great place to relax and enjoy riverside views or enjoy a picnic;
  • Switzerland – This charming unincorporated riverside community has a laid-back atmosphere and beautiful homes to admire;
  • Fruit Cove – Stop for lunch or a snack at one of the many eateries along SR 13 in this lovely area.

Level of difficulty: SR 13 is generally an easy ride, with smooth pavement and gentle curves, making it accessible for riders of various experience levels.

  • Traffic can vary, but congestion is usually minimal, so you can mostly look forward to a calm and enjoyable ride.
  • Keep an eye out for wildlife since there’s a good chance you’ll spot some beautiful Florida animals like ospreys and wading birds.
  • Gas stations and restrooms can be found in the towns along the route, but it’s best to fill up before you embark on your ride, as they might be a bit spaced apart.

7. US 98: Apalachicola to Panama City Beach

US 98

US 98 starts in the charming town of Apalachicola and ends in the vibrant Panama City Beach. The scenery along this route is magnificent, with plenty of coastal landscapes and lush greenery to admire.

Best Time to Visit ; The ideal time to experience this route is during the spring and fall months, when the weather is pleasant and traffic isn’t as heavy as in the summer months. Be sure to avoid hurricane season, which usually lasts from June to November.

Distance and Travel Time : Covering a distance of about 120 miles , this ride will take you approximately 2.5 hours to complete without any stops. However, I highly recommend taking breaks to explore the small towns and beautiful beaches along the way.

Places to Stop : Here are some must-visit pit stops on this route:

  • Apalachicola : Known for its fresh seafood and historic downtown area, this small town is the perfect starting point for your journey.
  • Carrabelle : Stop by here to relax on Carrabelle Beach or visit the unique Crooked River Lighthouse.
  • St. George Island : This beautiful barrier island offers pristine beaches and the opportunity to spot dolphins in the water.
  • Mexico Beach : Here, you’ll find white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for taking a relaxing break.
  • Panama City Beach : Conclude your ride at this popular tourist destination, with plenty of attractions, shopping, and dining options.

Level of Difficulty : I would rate this journey as easy to moderate in terms of difficulty. Traffic can vary depending on the time of year, and certain stretches may be more congested due to beachgoers during peak times. However, US 98 is generally well-maintained, making for a relatively smooth ride.

Other Information : While riding along this route, always remember to have your helmet and other safety gear on. In Florida, helmets are required by law. Keep an eye on the weather and be prepared for sudden changes, especially during hurricane season. Lastly, make sure your motorcycle is in good condition and fueled up, as gas stations can be sparse on certain parts of the route.

Tamiami Trail

When it comes to scenic motorcycle rides in Florida, I can’t help but recommend the Tamiami Trail . Connecting Naples to Miami, this picturesque route takes riders on a journey through the heart of the Everglades and offers stunning views of unique landscapes, making it an unforgettable experience.

Best Time to Visit : Florida’s weather can be quite unpredictable, but the ideal time to ride the Tamiami Trail is during the dry season between November and April. Temperatures are cooler, and there’s less chance of encountering rain or storms during your ride.

  • Miccosukee Indian Village – Experience the rich culture and history of the Miccosukee Tribe. Enjoy traditional arts and crafts, alligator wrestling shows, and airboat tours.

Level of Difficulty : Riding the Tamiami Trail is relatively easy and enjoyable for all skill levels. However, it’s crucial to remain cautious and attentive during your ride, as the two-lane highway can get busy with traffic, and wildlife may wander onto the road unexpectedly.

Other Information : Before starting your ride, make sure to fill up on gas and pack any essential items, such as water, snacks, sunscreen, and a camera. Cellphone reception can be spotty along certain parts of the route, so keeping a physical map or GPS device with offline maps is helpful in case you get turned around.

SR 80

One of my favorite motorcycle rides in Florida is SR 80 which takes you from Palm Beach to Labelle. This route offers a terrific combination of scenic views, historic landmarks, and various places to stop and explore.

best motorcycle road trip in florida

The 5 Best Motorcycle Riding Routes in Florida

Florida is a magnet for motorcycle riding and motorcyclists because it’s one of the few states that you can ride year round. The only caveat is the summer rains, you need to pay attention to the weather forecasts and have appropriate rain gear.

Its not just the weather that makes Florida so popular, its also because there are so many places to ride to. Florida probably has more tourist attractions than any other state.

Florida is pretty flat with lots of wide open road, though there are a few exceptions. Motorcycle riding on the back roads of Florida can be quite satisfying and scenic. Other than the middle of winter in Northern Florida the roads are generally ice free.

Below are my 5 favorite routes for motorcycling in the state of Florida.

The Ozello Trail Ride, 9 miles- Perfect for Motorcycle Riding

Expect plenty of views of the gulf, a few bridges, plus plenty of twists and turns. This is one of the most popular routes in Florida, though short, and is hidden around 60 miles to the north of Tampa.

There are plenty of side roads to explore, and other roads to check out in the area. Towards the end, you’ll find a great spot to eat. Take Highway 19 to State Route 494, the W. Ozello Trail.

Ozello Trail Ride

Alligator Alley, 75 miles

The I-75 has been known as Alligator Alley since it originally opened in 1968. It reopened in 1993, ending in (or beginning) Weston. There are plenty of spots for you to pull off the road and take in some of the wildlife and flora.

You may see gators, or even bears, it all depends on your lucky you are. Some riders report multiple sightings, while others aren’t so lucky. Keep your eyes peeled, though, because it’s easy to miss the sights.

You can expect to maintain a speed of around 80, but don’t go too much over it because there is a heavy police presence on this road.

Motorcycle Riding in Florida

The Sugarloaf Mountain Ride, 45 miles

This offers riders something a bit different from the rest of Florida, with tight corners and hilly inclines. It’s dramatically different from the standard flat terrain found throughout Florida. As you travel the 441 you’ll find yourself escaping the city traffic and enjoying more wooded scenery as the area becomes more sparsely populated.

The ride doesn’t really start till you hit Old Country Road 561. The 561 and the 455 create an excellent loop around Sugarloaf Mountain and make for a winding ride with curves and inclines. It’s a country ride, so there aren’t many stops along the route.

Sugarloaf Mountain Ride Motorcycle Riding

Indian River Lagoon, 44 miles

The Indian River Lagoon route is the perfect balance of rural road and relaxing highway. This route is excellent for  for new riders because it’s a fairly straight and smooth ride.  Though the two-lane roads have some twists and turns, plus minor dips and hills. Fort Pierce has four routes intersecting it, and this route can be found at the intersection of the A1A south and the US-1.

Florida Motorcycle Riding

Scenic SR-13, 38 miles

There are plenty of communities with parks, and shady trees lining the roads making this an excellent ride. The St Johns River is just to the side of the SR-13, whether you’re heading north or south. You’ll start out with a busy 6 lane highway, narrowing to 4 lanes as you head over the county line at Duval and St Johns, and then eventually becomes a simple 2 lane road.

Motorcycle riding  traveling from the north?  Take Interstate 295 towards the Jacksonville SR-13 exit. If you’re heading from the south, then you’ll find the road just off the SR-207 near Hastings. This is an especially popular road with motorcycle clubs. If you’re planning on riding in a group the added safety that rider-to-rider wireless communication provides is especially helpful.

Enjoy the ride but please ride safely and always wear a helmet.
