Sightseeing:

Wedged between sea, sky and mountains, this small fishing port has been esteemed for centuries for its superb seafood.

Sakaiminato is the home of Shigeru Mizuki, the creator of GeGeGe no Kitaro, a character seen in many forms throughout Japan. The spirit of Kitaro can be found in Sakaiminato, on Kitaro Road, a street dedicated to all the characters that appear in Mizuki's stories. One hundred bronze statues of the story's characters line both sides of the road.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Hama Loop Bus has Two Courses; Main Course and Life Course. Main Course conveniently runs around a network of major places such as Municipal Administration Offices, Hospitals and Sight-seeing Spots. There are a Bus running Right Loop Course and a Bus running Left Loop Course. One Loop Bus runs right loop clockwise and the other one runs left loop counter clockwise, each departing from and arriving at the City Hall which is the base point. It would be more convenient if one would check the location of bus stop where to get on and where to get off before using the loop bus.

The fishing wharf and center of town are compact enough to enjoy on foot.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

Sakaiminato is also your gateway to a very ancient region of Honshu. West of the city lies Izumo-taisha , one of the oldest and holiest shrines in Shinto. This area is dotted with burial mounds from Japan's Bronze Age. The town of Matsue boasts the celebrated " Black Castle ," a six-story, black-walled castle that home to a clan of the mighty Tokugawa dynasty that ruled Japan for over 250 years. And to the east rises the great snow-capped summit of Mt. Daisen , considered one of the four most scenic mountains in all Japan.

Shopping and Food

Kitaro-related souvenirs of all types are available everywhere. Anything related to the Medama Oyaji or Eyeball Daddy character seems especially popular.

The currency in Japan is the yen. It comes in denominations of ¥10,000, ¥5,000 and ¥1,000 notes, as well as ¥500, ¥100, ¥50, ¥10, ¥5 and ¥1 coins.

ATMs in Japan are becoming more useful, and most can be used to withdraw funds from overseas accounts. Post offices also offer ATMs. Major credit cards are accepted at a majority of stores and restaurants in large urban areas, but if you plan on spending any time in rural areas, be sure to carry sufficient cash. Japan is still very much a cash society and some stores, hotels and restaurants-regardless of location-refuse credit cards.

Don't tip, as it's considered rude!

Port Information

sakaiminato cruise terminal

The Sakai Port is a natural harbor sheltered by the Shimane Peninsula on the north. Geographically it is situated almost exactly mid-way between the Tsuruga Port and the Shimonoseki Port and due to its location, the Sakai Port plays an important role in the economies of the Hanshin, Sanyo and Kyushu regions. For centuries this port has been a focus of trade with mainland Asia and its location has meant it possessed great strategic and economic importance. Moreover, the Sakai Port is one of the few ports in Japan where a significant volume of the fishing catch is brought to land unfrozen; in fact the port is known as the "Tasty Port" of the Japan Sea due to the large volume and high quality of Pacific bluefin tuna and red snow crab brought here without being frozen. The area is blessed with the natural beauty and abundance of the San'in Region, as well as many Japanese historical and cultural sites, such as the Izumo Grand Shrine. The seaside and mountain villages, as well as the delicious and varied food, are enjoyable. Whatever the season, one can relax in Onsen, and visitors can find many interesting sites to visit, particularly those with a passion for anime and manga culture.

TOTTORI Yonago & Sakaiminato A bird-watching, cycling and manga mecca, with the added benefit of sea-water hot springs

  • Yonago & Sakaiminato

A bird-watching, cycling and manga mecca, with the added benefit of sea-water hot springs

Yonago has long been the more laid back and artistic of Tottori Prefecture's two largest cities. Surrounded by natural beauty and with excellent accessibility, it is a relaxing and attractive area from which to explore the local region and beyond.

  • Bird viewing at the informative and conveniently accessed Yonago Wildfowl Park
  • Bathing in saltwater hot springs overlooking a beautiful bay
  • Posing next to statues in Sakaiminato based on characters from one of Japan's most beloved manga comics
  • Pedaling along new coastal cycle tracks and over the “world's craziest bridge”

How to Get There

Yonago City is the region's central transport hub and is accessible by road, land, and sea.

Several daily flights connect Yonago Kitaro to the airports in Tokyo in around one hour and 15 minutes. Inexpensive highway buses operate services between Yonago and several major cities. Osaka is roughly three hours away.

A weekly ferry service connects Sakaiminato with Donghae in South Korea and Vladivostok in Russia.

A place where ghosts and legends abound

The area has long featured in Japanese folklore and is an area of spiritual and mystical significance.

According to an 8th-century chronicle, The Izumo Fudoki, one of the gods involved in Japan's creation wished to make the nation larger. He did this by using a rope and a stake to pull a piece of land from across the sea towards Japan. The stake became Mt. Daisen, and the rope became what is now the Yumigahama Peninsula.

As the birthplace of Shigeru Mizuki, the creator of the much-loved manga series Ge Ge Ge Kitaro, Sakaiminato attracts thousands of visitors annually. Throughout the area, images of the main character Kitaro and various monsters from the series are emblazoned on everything from trains and buses to vending machines and packaging.

Perfectly positioned for further exploration

Situated on the border of the two least populated prefectures in the country, Yonago and Sakaiminato are the perfect locations to begin exploring the whole region.

Sakaiminato is the primary fishing port for all of Western Japan, so it's no surprise that seafood is a major attraction here. Much of the country's snow crab, which is considered a foremost delicacy around the world, hails from Sakai Port. In addition to creatures of the sea, the city is filled with "spirit monsters" known as 'Yokai', bronze statues based on Japanese folklore. This artistic spirit is exemplified on Kitaro Road, where hundreds of statues from famed local artist Shigeru Mizuki line the street.

A Day in Sakaiminato

NAVITIME TRAVEL EDITOR

sakaiminato cruise terminal

Located in the western section of Tottori Prefecture, bordering Shimane Prefecture sits Sakaiminato, a port city with two major claims to fame: anime and crabs. The Matsuba crab commonly caught, served, and sold in this region is one of Tottori Prefecture’s culinary icons. Sakaiminato is also the hometown of Japanese manga artist and historian Shigeru Mizuki. Though Shigeru passed away in 2015, his legacy still lives on through his creations, which inhabit Sakaiminato’s streets.

A Day in Sakaiminato

As you wander through the city you’ll soon realize the impact of Shigeru’s work on the people of Sakaiminato. The city’s major road is named Mizuki Shigeru Road after the artist and it’s dotted with countless references to his work. Stretching 800 meters from JR Sakaiminato Station to Honmachi Arcade, the road is home to bronze statues of Shigeru’s characters as well as live characters in costume ready to welcome unsuspecting guests.

A Day in Sakaiminato

While wandering down the anime populated main street, pay special attention to your surroundings as the real art of the Sakaiminato city’s homage to the manga icon is in the tiniest of details. Shigeru’s trademark anime eye image is carefully hidden in countless corners of the city. Visit the GeGeGe no Kitaro manga figurine shop located in the center of Sakaiminato to pick up some unique collectors’ items and keep a look out for the Shigeru-styled eyes above the door front.

A Day in Sakaiminato

Mizuki Shigeru’s most famous work, the manga series GeGeGe no Kitaro was born in the 1960s and is most well known for popularising the Japanese folklore figures yokai, who are supernatural spirits most commonly referred to as demons. Since its incarnation, the story has been adapted into films, live action movies, and video games. To learn more about this fascinating local figure, be sure to visit the Mizuki Shigeru Museum located nearby. The museum houses exhibitions as well as motion pictures and most importantly a Japanese house diorama, which features yokai hiding inside.

A Day in Sakaiminato

Once done exploring the spooky world of Shigeru, be sure to pay a visit to one of the city’s most iconic locations, the Chiyomusubi Sake Brewery also located on Mizuki Shigeru Road. Founded in 1865, they’re the only sake brewery in the city and everything here is crafted specifically with locally grown rice sourced from the Tottori area. If you feel so inclined, you can also sign up for a 20 to 30-minute brewery tour which takes guests through the sake making process and features a sake tasting session at the end. Reservations are required so be sure to book in advance.

A Day in Sakaiminato

Signposted by a towering Kitaro statue, one of Shigeru’s most famous characters is the Nakaura Fish Market. Opening in 1992, today the bustling market is so popular it’s estimated to attract between 450 - 600 thousand visitors a year. It’s definitely worth visiting if you find yourself in Sakaiminato. As well as a wide range of seafood, the market is one of the most popular places to buy Matsuba crab, you can try it here or take it home fresh to cook yourself.

A Day in Sakaiminato

If you’d rather have someone else cook for you, the best way to wrap up a visit through Sakaiminato city is by grabbing some dinner at Genki-tei. The restaurant is most well known for their dish kaisen-don (seafood over rice) featuring fish fresh off the boat.

A Day in Sakaiminato

The best way to get to the area from nearby Tottori City is to catch the JR San-In Line Limited Express to Shin-Yamaguchi and switch to the Sakai Line at Yonago Station. This trip takes a little over two hours and costs About 3,440 yen. If coming you’re travelling by car from Shimane Prefecture, be sure to soak up the impressive views of Mt. Daisen and the harbor, and the city while crossing the bridge.

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

Hakata-Fukuoka City cruise port

Region Asia

Local Time 2024-04-27 15:50

Port Hakata-Fukuoka City cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Hakata-Fukuoka City, Japan Fukuoka. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Fukuoka City (served by Port Hakata) is located on Kyushu Island's northern coast. This is also Fukuoka Prefecture's capital and the island's largest city (population around 1,5 million, metro 5,6 million), followed by Kitakyushu (under 1 million). The city is part of the Fukuoka–Kitakyushu metro region (industrial zone), which is Japan's 5th largest.

Fukuoka hosts over 2 million international visitors per year, with the majority coming from China and South Korea. Nearly 10,000 international students attend universities in/near Fukuoka annually. The city also helds around 200 international conferences annually.

Sky Dream Fukuoka (located in the city's western ward) is one of the largest Ferris wheels in the world at a height of 120 m (394 ft). Fukuoka Castle is situated adjacent to Ohori Park in Maizuru Park and features the remaining stone ramparts and walls left after a devastating fire during upheaval of Meiji Restoration. It has been preserved together with some reconstructed concrete towers constructed during 1950s-1960s, when there was a trend to rebuild damaged castles as attractions for tourists. Ōhori Park is the location of one of the major art galleries in Fukuoka City. A newly opened Kyushu National Museum is found in nearby Dazaifu.

Fukuoka Port Hakata

Since 2010, Fukuoka's Hakata Port (locode JPHKT) became a major cruise port destination for tourists leaving on round-trip itineraries from China.

Statistics for season 2014 show a total of 91 cruise vessels from China docked at Hakata Port.

In 2015, the number of visiting cruise ships jumped to 259, bringing to Fukuoka over 580,000 passengers. This was also the year in which the port was visited by its currently largest cruise vessel - Royal Caribbean 's Quantum of the Seas (LOA length 347 m / 1138 ft, tonnage 168,700 GT, launched in 2014). After Hakata Port's expansion, in 2016 the number of ship calls exeeded 400.

In 2016 (on November 30) at Hakata Port was has held the "Second Fukuoka Cruise Conference". The international event was sponsored by Japan's MLIT ("Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism", also by JTA ("Japan Tourism Agency"), JCPA ("Japan Cruise Port Association"), and CLIA Asia ("Cruise Lines International Association"). The conference focused on the Japanese cruising market growth, targeting 1 million passengers per year. Among the participating cruise companies were Royal Caribbean, Costa Asia and Princess, The first "Fukuoka Cruise Conference" was held in 2014 (January) in which participated over 250 people representing cruise and travel companies, Japanese port authorities, as well as port- and service-related Japanese companies.

In 2016, Port Hakata received a total of 328 cruise ship calls and handled over 850,000 passengers. In 2017, these numbers grew to 347 calls and 950,000 cruise tourists. In 2017, of all liners to Fukuoka, over 95% were from China. Local shore excursions and tours are themed mainly on shopping and sightseeing.

To cope with the increasing shipping traffic, since 2017 the cruise port offers berth allocation as an incentive for overnight port stays and homeporting (turnaround operations / on roundtrip itineraries).

To attract larger-sized vessels, in 2018, Hakata cruise port scheduled a dredging and lengthening project for Chuo Wharf. The extension allowed berthing of world's largest cruise ships of RCI's Oasis-class.. Additionally was planned berth expansion (at Chuo) to allow docking capacity of two vessels simultaneously.

In summer 2018, in Hakata was homeported  Costa neoRomantica , with scheduled 11 roundtrips and targeting Japanese passengers. Ship's 4-5-7-day itinerary program included as call ports Maizuru, Kanazawa, Niigata, Sakata, Hakodate, Sakaiminato and Busan (Korea).

Hakata-Fukuoka City cruise terminal

Fukuoka cruise ship terminal (officially "Hakata Port International Terminal") is located at "Bayside Place" and close to the city. Here dock all cruise ships, as well as the regularly scheduled ferries (operating between Fukuoka and Tsushima Island) and all harbour tour boats. The terminal building hosts restaurants, boutique shops, also a huge Aquarium with over 1200 fishes.

Among the city's most popular tourist attractions is the grandeous laser show held here each evening.
