With close to a billion streams of his 6 albums to date, and averaging a million more every week, Chad Daniels is one of the most listened to comedians of all time. Originally from, and still residing in, rural Minnesota Chad has been touring the country for over 20 years. He has made 6 late night appearances to date and is one of only 13 comics to be featured on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. His previous album Footprints on the Moon was the most streamed comedy album of 2017. Chad’s third stand-up special and fifth album, Dad Chaniels, was released on Amazon in 2019 and his hugely popular podcast, Middle of Somewhere with co-host Cy Amundson, is released weekly.

Chad Daniels is feeling his ‘Empty Nest,’ but loving the journey all the same

As someone who has deemed himself “pretty close to becoming an old man,” Chad Daniels still gets excited about playing new stages. Now, playing a new stage that is also iconic just makes it that much sweeter.

In his leveled-up return to Boston, which finds him at The Wilbur on Friday (April 12) after years of performing in club settings in the city, Daniels is finally realizing a long-standing goal of his after years of watching some of comedy’s biggest names tout headlining gigs at the famed Boston venue during late night sets and guest spots on radio shows like Opie & Anthony . Not only is he “pretty jacked up” to finally be able to check that goal off, and to have Dan Boulger start things off for him after seeing the longtime local favorite kill in a room in Key West, but Daniels is also just pumped to mix it up again with a Boston crowd — a faction of showgoers that the Minnesota native regards as elite and vital in the comedy scene.

“I’m really looking forward to being back in Boston. It’s such a great comedy town, because you have people who pretty much laugh at everything, where you can go on both sides of the political spectrum, and really just talk about anything,” Daniels tells Vanyaland . “What I’ve enjoyed so much about Boston crowds over the years is that they will laugh at the expense of others, but then also laugh at themselves, and that’s really what I think makes for a great crowd.”

As a historically inward-seeking comic who uses personal perspective and situations in his life to paint his often deeply detailed and sharply executed verbal illustrations, Daniels is gleefully veering back into that familiar lane after admittedly letting human nature get the best of him in his highly opinionated, but evenly balanced special, Mixed Reviews . As may be evident by the name of his Empty Nest tour, Daniels once again brings his audience into his world as he copes with the whole process of his two kids, who have been prominent targets for his material over the years, growing up and moving out of his house.

Of course, he knows he’ll never stop being a dad, and that these fresh stories are largely coming from the same perspective as always, but just the idea of where he is in his own life, which he now shares with his partner and fellow comedian Kelsey Cook, naturally has him feeling a bit differently about things, especially when it comes to parenting.

“My son just got married, and my daughter is a sophomore in college, so I think I’ve always had the same approach, where I’m writing about how I’m feeling when I’m in a certain situation,” says Daniels. “So when they were in the house, it was more about hands-on parenting, and now it’s more about what I’m doing with my life, how I’m continuing to parent from afar, whether that includes stories about visiting my daughter at school or going to my son’s wedding in Mexico. Talking about my kids has been one of my favorite things, because it kind of makes me feel like I’m staying close to them when I’m telling stories about them.”

As an artist who is always working toward “the next thing,” Daniels has been hard at work building up more than one new hour in between his latest special and his current hour. In fact, he has another hour already in the can, and has also recorded the initial material he brought out on the road for this run, but that’s not to say he’ll be doing the same material found on his forthcoming special when he makes his way to town.

Instead, Daniels has continued to follow his long-standing process of keeping his touring hour fresh by replacing one joke every week with a new bit to work out. That way, by the time he reaches the end of a tour cycle, or in this case the middle of one, it’s already a brand new product that keeps both him and his fans actively engaged with the material without the risk of it running stale.

“In doing it that way, there are things in the hour that you’re continuously looking forward to and that keeps you focused on the stuff that you’ve said before,” says Daniels. “You really become more emotionally involved in the material because you’re getting to something that’s brand new and exciting.”

For a seasoned veteran of the craft like Daniels, the opportunity to take the stage at a place like The Wilbur doesn’t harness any added pressure. What it does harness though, aside from a larger space where check drops won’t hinder the home stretch of the show like they’ve been known to do in smaller clubs, is the chance to step foot on the same stage as an endless list of comedy legends, and to be included in the history of the venue. The surreal nature of the moment isn’t lost on Daniels, and he’s ready to show everyone why he’s there in the first place.

“I always think about this time when I was flying to San Francisco to work Punchline, which has a notorious, sort of abstract backdrop of the city behind the stage,” says Daniels. “As I was flying, I was watching a Robin Williams documentary, and there’s a video of him on that stage in front of that backdrop, and I was just like ‘what the fuck, man? Little ol’ me from northern Minnesota is flying to San Francisco to perform on the same stage as him?’ It might be a little odd when you start thinking about it like that, but I’m just happy to know that my name will be in the Wilbur books with some real legends. It’s really a cool thought.”

In his tenth comedy special, Daniels explains that he’s an empty nester, as his kids are now 20 and 24. His new hour sees him head to St. Paul, the capital of his home state, to get brutally honest about what it’s like being an empty nester, throwing another hat in the dating ring, and standing firmly in the middle of whatever road he stands in.

Raised in such a cultural fondue pot as this, it was natural for Kyle to find his way from warehouse work into show business. As a comedian, he has been seen on Conan, The Tonight Show, Netflix’s “The Standups,” and three of his own hour-length specials on Comedy Central. As an actor, he’s been in the Judd Apatow series “Love” and truTV’s “Those Who Can’t.” He was also on “Drunk History,” where he unfortunately wasn’t acting. As a voice-over actor, he was the former voice of Comedy Central for 8 years and currently plays Bullet on the Netflix series “Paradise PD.” He is also cohost of the Boogie Monster podcast along with Dave Stone, and the streaming show “Hey Girl” with Matt Braunger. As a musician, he has done nothing, as he is not a musician.

Kyle’s most recent standup work, “Trampoline In A Ditch,” was recorded at Comedy on State in Madison, Wisconsin and was released on 800 LB Gorilla Records in 2020. The album was accompanied by an animated short, produced by Meister.

YAKOV SMIRNOFF IS A LEGEND
 IN AMERICAN COMEDY.

After escaping communist Soviet Union in the 1977, Yakov came to the United States with nothing

but a dream. Before even learning the language, Yakov humbly began working as a bartender at

the famous Grossinger’s Catskill Resort in New York, where he started telling jokes to his

customers each night. As his English improved, he quickly grew in popularity. He made a daring

move to Hollywood where the owner of The Comedy Store, Mitzi Shore, spotted him and advised

him to stay. She told him, “There is always a place for good and different.”

His lovable view of life through the eyes of a poor immigrant captured the hearts of America. He

soared to the top of the comedy world, performing on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson”

and countless other television programs, including as a regular character on “Night Court.” He

became a star of his very own show, named after his famous catchphrase, “What a Country!”

Yakov branched out to the big screen where he starred in movies with Tom Hanks, Robin

Williams, Richard Pryor, Meryl Streep, and Jack Nicholson, to name a few. In 2016 and 2017 his

TV special “Happily ever laughter” was voted “The best special” on PBS.

He has given command performances for 4 US presidents.

Yakov Smirnoff is an iconic comedian, movie star, best-selling author and most recently, an

educator, when he earned a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania,

after which he became a professor at Missouri State University. His latest accomplishment is a

doctoral degree in Global Leadership from Pepperdine University.

Living a life that is as exciting as ever, Yakov has married his sweetheart, currently has his very

own 2000 seat theater in Branson, Missouri, and tours the world doing stand-up Comedy at

performing arts centers.

Inspired by his higher education in psychology and global leadership he is currently writing a

book, “Unconscious Attraction: Why does the wrong person feel so right?”

With the heart of a dreamer, Yakov Smirnoff has made the impossible possible and continues to

inspire others with his message that America is still, “What a Country!” Keep an eye out for a

He has performed stand-up on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Late Show, The Pete Holmes Show, and John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show on Comedy Central. His half-hour special can be seen on Comedy Central and iTunes.

Phil can be seen starring in the film "Sundowners" alongside Tim Heidecker and in Amy Schumer's "I Feel Pretty." His album, “Please Don’t Chit Chat While I’m Pursuing My Dream,” was released in 2018.

Damon Wayans Jr

Damon Wayans Jr is an American actor, comedian and writer. Widely known for as his the character of character Coach on New Girl on Fox and before that as Brad Williams in the ABC sitcom Happy Endings for which he was nominated for the Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2014, he starred in the comedy film Let's Be Cops, and provided the voice of Wasabi in Big Hero 6 which Won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year for the 2015 Academy Awards.  Wayans Jr. made his film debut when he was cast in his father's feature film of 1994, Blankman, playing Young Kevin. He later appeared on his father's sitcom My Wife and Kids as John, one of Junior's friends. He later worked as a staff writer on the series. In fact, the character of Junior was loosely based on Wayans Jr. himself! He appeared in and served as a writer on The Underground. Wayans Jr. also surprised audiences when he garnered a standing ovation during his debut appearance on Def Comedy Jam. He starred in the Wayans family comedy Dance Flick as the film's main character, Thomas.

He was raised in a religious household, went to a conservative Christian college, worked in the oilfield, loves BBQ and the phrase "fixen to". But it doesn't take long after meeting Justin to realize that he is farthest thing from a stereotype. He is quick-witted, brutally honest, and incredibly engaging, which is the main reason his resume is so diverse. Ranging from making fun of high school proms on MTV to talking about the intricate details of comedy on PBS, to performing at the world famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, not to mention participating in the notorious Hell Yes Fest in New Orleans. Justin has no limits. Justin currently resides in NYC where he lives in a Hispanic neighborhood, rides crowded trains everyday, and performs nightly all over the city. And loves every second.

Stream it or skip it: ‘greg fitzsimmons: you know me’ on youtube, finding the comedian reflecting comfortably in his fifties, stream it or skip it: ‘adam sandler: love you’ on netflix, an uncut gem of a comedy special directed by a safdie brother, how adam sandler’s ‘love you’ special on netflix helps continue an unlikely middle-aged peak.

At first, this special looks and sounds a lot like Chad Daniels’ earlier comedy specials, which he has released on YouTube, but still managed to crack my Top 10 list for 2021 , as well as scoring honorable mentions for best-of lists for both 2022 and 2023 . Will his jump from YouTube to Netflix this year pay dividends for Daniels? How much material does he have to unleash a great fourth hour of stand-up in four years?

CHAD DANIELS: EMPTY NESTER : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Daniels, a 49-year-old Minnesota native, filmed this hour in St. Paul, and he is the titular Empty Nester, as his two kids (a son, 24, and daughter, 20) have left. He jokes at one point about dropping off his daughter at college in Southern California, and wondering what life would be like when he returned to an empty home in Minnesota. Turns out, not all that bad?! Especially since he has a new-ish girlfriend (comedian Kelsey Cook) who has moved in with him, and brought all sorts of new comedic situations to explore.

What Comedy Specials Will It Remind You Of?:  As a well-respected stand-up who has grinded out a career full of strong observational material but somehow not yet earned the wider fame (or big streaming special) he deserves, Daniels shares that in common with Kyle Kinane . At least until now.

Memorable Jokes: Daniels endears himself to his hometown crowd right from the jump with a routine about Minnesotans share at least one thing in common with New Yorkers, in that telling strangers you’re from there elicits immediate accent mockery from them. “You don’t get that other places,” he explains, making his case by demonstrating how weirder it’d be if we acted like this toward Americans from other cities or states. One experience you might not share elsewhere, though, Daniels acts out an awkward encounter with a seemingly-handicapped woman in a NYC crosswalk who nevertheless beats him across the street.

Seeing an interaction between a boy and his father on an escalator prompts Daniels to ponder how parents answer sometimes unknowable questions from their kids. Is it better to say you don’t know than to ascribe the meaning of things to God? Daniels certainly believes so. Otherwise, he jokes: “Your kids are going to go to school full Waterboy .” 

Which leads him to conclude: “I think you only have to be better than your dad, to be a good dad. That’s a rule I made up to make myself feel better.” Which makes perfect sense once you hear him reveal what his father did to set back his progress as a teen. But of course, the special is titled Empty Nester , so we’re going to hear how Daniels himself reacted once he dropped off his youngest child at college, what he did upon returning to his empty Minnesota house, and what it’s like now that his girlfriend (comedian Kelsey Cook) has moved in with him.

That leads to some new humorous situations, not only because he claims she’s allergic to everything, but also because he has seemingly ensured there shouldn’t be any pregnancy scares after having undergone a vasectomy. Shouldn’t be, being the operative term. After all, Daniels already has a son in his mid-20s getting married, and he couldn’t imagine having another child now who’s potentially the same age or younger than a prospective grandchild.

Our Take: All the while, Daniels proves he’s a comedian in command of his audience.

After his opening routine, he declares: “I’ve got some shaking heads and some shaking shoulders. Whatever, I don’t care. I’ll take either one.”

Then he launches into a bit based on seeing two adult siblings kissing each other on the lips, which he uses to contrast with his own kids, how he’s never even kissed his own sister on the cheek despite her desperately needing the affection at times, compares American attitudes to morality, honor and shame with Japanese traditions, and then begins interrogating the women sitting near the front of the stage to see how they’d react if their brothers attempted to kiss them on the lips. By the end, he’s not only fully fleshed out the observation, but also settled any tension with the audience by declaring, “Everyone can relax. That ends the question portion for the front row.” Unlike many comedians who use crowd work as a means to the end of setting up their set-ups, Daniels only asks for interaction once he already has established his point of view and proven what’s funny about it. That’s the mark of a confident, experienced stand-up.

He demonstrates his confidence even more clearly when at one point he flubs a story-opening line about visiting an airport Starbucks, accidentally starting to say Subway instead. But instead of editing it out, he leans into his error by riffing a new joke that lands. “Well, shit, maybe that should be the joke, I don’t know?” Certainly, that could’ve been a trick he plays on us to make it feel like we’re experiencing a true moment that’s only for us. But almost to prove he’s not bluffing, Daniels then starts the entire bit over, as if to allow for an edit in post-production, to tell his intended bit about the airport Starbucks encounter.

Either way, he clearly relishes his ability to provoke varied reactions without having to pander to any particular crowd. Daniels claims he worried that in this political climate, he’d have to write two completely different hours of jokes to appeal to different crowds depending upon the gig, but expresses his gratitude that he can stand his ground. Which is where, exactly? “i’m on the left, the line’s right by my foot.”

Could he wade into politically thorny issues, though? Of course. And he has answers at the ready, too, even if they’re not what you might have expected. Try to pin him down on trans athletes, for example, and Daniels will come back with opinions that make you wonder why you even made a big deal about it in the first place. And as with any great comedian, he also knows how to tie his opinions neatly in a bow with callbacks to his previous punchlines and metaphors that also call into question your thoughts on other potentially divisive subjects.

As he jokes about our more extreme neighbors: “The far left, they update more than Apple products. The problem with far right, they haven’t updated one time, ever.”

To paraphrase from that classic hit by Stealers Wheel, clowns to the left of him, jokers to the right, here Daniels is, stuck in the middle with us.

Our Call: STREAM IT. If for whatever reason you haven’t seen or heard Chad Daniels before, then this is a great hour to get to know him. No matter your politics.
