Long Beach is an ocean-facing city in Los Angeles County in Southern California, approximately 20 miles south of Los Angeles. Its central attraction is the ocean, with approximately 5.5 miles of beach. The Shoreline Pedestrian Bike Path runs the entire length of this long stretch of sand, connecting its different beaches and points of interest.

The ocean experience in Long Beach culminates in the Downtown Waterfront District. Here, places like the Aquarium of the Pacific and Rainbow Harbor offer authentic Southern California travel experiences. And nearby, The Queen Mary ocean liner enjoys her retirement in Queensway Bay, where those looking for something unique to do can hop aboard and enjoy the history.

The Downtown Waterfront overlooks Queensway Bay on the south side of the city. It's often the first place to visit for tourists and residents looking for entertainment. One of the most popular activities at the beach is traveling the entirety of the beach on the Shoreline Pedestrian Bike Path. This weaving concrete trail features separate lanes for pedestrians and non-motorized commuters.

The Queen Mary was once the grandest ocean liner to navigate the Pacific Ocean. It first set sail in 1936 from Southampton, England, and was an instant hit. Thousands of tourists boarded The Queen Mary , followed by thousands of soldiers, as the luxury cruise liner actively participated in the Second World War.

Upon the advent of affordable air travel, fewer passengers began boarding The Queen Mary , ultimately leading to her 1967 retirement along the sunny shores of Southern California. And today, it's permanently docked in Long Beach in Queensway Bay.

And most of the village's restaurants feature waterfront dining. Other items like ice cream and funnel cakes are also available.

For extended adventures outside of Shoreline village, consider renting a beach bike and heading south toward the sand. Alamitos Beach is a short distance south, while Junipero Cherry Beach requires a bit more of a ride. North of Shoreline Village, the campus surrounding the Aquarium of the Pacific also draws a crowd.

The Long Beach Museum of Art is within a century-old summer home overlooking the ocean, on the north end of Bluff Park . It features American decorative art, regional contemporary art, and early-20th-century European Art. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, with free admission offered every Friday. The museum's restaurant, Claire's at the Museum , is a popular spot to enjoy lunch near the ocean.

El Dorado East Regional Park is an expansive natural space close to downtown. It's one of the best parks in Long Beach and the largest near the city. And it's a favorite place to escape the hustle and bustle of city streets.

A four-mile bike and pedestrian path winds throughout the park area, connecting two stocked fishing lakes and other park amenities, including playgrounds, picnic shelters, and a model aircraft flying area. The El Dorado Dog Park is popular with pet owners, and the El Dorado Nature Center provides educational displays and local artwork on the walls.

It's a small cost of admission to drive a vehicle into the park throughout the week, with higher rates on the weekends. On the other side of the San Gabriel River, El Dorado West City Park is free to enjoy and features a popular 18-hole disc golf course.

Long Beach enjoys welcoming weather throughout the year. However, the best time to visit Long Beach is the extended summer season, including June, July, August, September, and October. This long season offers warm water and consistently warm weather, with temperatures averaging in the low 80s Fahrenheit.

The months leading up to summer, including April and May, are also lovely times to visit. Sunny skies also define this time of year, with temperatures averaging a bit lower in the mid-70s Fahrenheit. This time of year is also typically more affordable compared to the touristy summer months.

There's really not a bad time to visit Long Beach. The winter months, spanning from November through the beginning of March, do see a few days of rain and clouds, but visitors can still expect daytime temperatures in the upper 60s Fahrenheit. The winter months, outside of the holiday season, can also be an affordable time to visit.

With so many things to do in Long Beach, California, it’s hard not to fall in love with everything the city offers, from cultural enlightenment to pure relaxation.

Top Things to Do in Long Beach

Head downtown.

At first glance, downtown Long Beach is just another cliché downtown in Southern California with high-rise, glass buildings, and trendy restaurants along a palm-lined promenade. 

And although that’s not far from the truth, don’t write downtown Long Beach off just yet. You might be surprised by its easygoing character and charm.

Speaking of charm, The Ordinarie has plenty! This warm tavern in downtown Long Beach serves delicious American cuisine accompanied by good music ranging from jazz to country. 

What locals love most about this place though is the holiday-themed food and drink during December.

Other places to eat downtown include Pier 76 Fish Grill , Bo-Beau Kitchen + Roof Tap , and George’s Greek Cafe .

Get Lost in the Scenic Neighborhood of Naples

Once you step on the streets of Naples, you’ll understand where the Italian names of the neighborhood and streets come from. 

Sitting atop three islands separated by canals, the entire neighborhood evokes an unmistakable Italian charm. 

You can expect gondolas floating in the canals, luscious greenery following you everywhere you look, and beautiful homes washed in sunlight. 

The Naples neighborhood makes you feel like you went through a portal and landed on Burano Island in Venice.

Also, if you happen to be in Naples around Christmas , you’re lucky. Naples is one of the most wholesome Christmas destinations in California ! 

The houses are beautifully decorated, holiday music blasts from speakers, and the locals even give out hot cocoa and cookies.

Hit the Beach

Unlike much of the California Coast, where the Pacific Ocean is wild with waves and riptides, the beaches in Long Beach are on the calmer side. 

It’s only natural then that going to the beach is one of the main Long Beach activities to enjoy when you’re in town. 

Whether you’re with friends, family, or a loved one – there’s a beach for every occasion. The following are a few of my favorites.

Alamitos Park Beach

Head to Alamitos Park Beach if you’re looking for things to do in Long Beach with kids – the water here is usually pretty calm and gentle. 

On the side, there’s a grassy area with picnic tables and a little shade from the towering palms.

Rosie’s Dog Beach

Rosie’s Dog Beach is ideal if you’re looking for a good beach to bring your furry friend to. 

Between 6 am and 8 pm all doggos are welcome to play in the water or run around off-leash. The only rule is that you can’t bring more than one dog. 

Cherry Beach

If you want to mingle with the crowds and have access to more amenities, head to Cherry Beach (also known as Junipero Beach). 

For the early birds, there might be some free parking spots, otherwise, use the metered parking along the nearby streets.

With lifeguards always on duty, Junipero Beach is one of the safest beaches to swim at in town. Also, their recreational facilities are popular among the younger folk.

Explore the Bustling East Village Arts District

Show appreciation for local artists by heading to the Arts District of Long Beach. 

Despite being in downtown Long Beach, the East Village Arts District has the laid-back energy of a small town. 

Inside the restored historic buildings you’ll find art galleries, independent shops, cozy cafes, and restaurants. 

Start off your time in the neighborhood with brunch at Rose Park and a nice cup of specialty coffee from Ground Hideout Coffee . 

For shopping, head to the indie home decor stores ReCircle Home or 6th And Detroit or shop for some new clothes at J Graphix Studio or Burke Mercantile .

Another hot spot for art and history enthusiasts – the Long Beach Museum of Art has a permanent art collection of over 3,000 pieces in different mediums. 

The permanent collection, as well as the temporary exhibits, pay homage to American and European art from the last three centuries. 

With free parking and a general admission of $12, the Long Beach Museum of Art offers one of the most affordable yet brain-stimulating experiences in town.

Additionally, the Long Beach Museum of Art operates Claire’s, a restaurant with a gorgeous ocean view. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic date night, just make reservations ahead of time.

Learn History at Rancho Los Cerritos

Dating back to 1844, the Los Cerritos Ranch House provides a window into the Mexican history of the area. 

During its heyday, it was the most remarkable adobe residence in Southern California, housing cattle and sheep.

Today, it’s high on the list of top places to visit in Long Beach. 

It operates as a public Long Beach museum showcasing a Victorian-era interior, a formal Italian garden, library, and a gift shop.

Stroll Around Long Beach Waterfront

The bustling Long Beach Waterfront gives a special lure to the city. 

With so many vibrant boutiques and dining spots in Shoreline Village (the charming seaside hangout on the east side of Rainbow Harbor), it’s an unsurprisingly busy place at all times. 

One of the landmark spots drawing the most crowds is Parkers’ Lighthouse , a restaurant famous not only for its delicious food but also for the splendid harbor views from every table.

Once you’ve wined and dined, you can take a casual walk around ShoreLine Aquatic Park. 

It’s a public park with spectacular ocean views, rich greenery, and a lighthouse that separates Rainbow Harbor from Queensway Bay.

Another fun thing to do around the waterfront is shopping at The Pike Outlets. This is where you can find a good lineup of outlet stores for well-known brands and there’s even a Ferris wheel for the kids.

See the Marine Life Up Close in the Aquarium of the Pacific

One of the most popular Long Beach attractions with over 1.5 million visitors per year, the Aquarium of the Pacific is home to more than 12,000 aquatic animals from the largest ocean in the world. 

Of all the things to do in Long Beach with the family, visiting the Aquarium of the Pacific is definitely the most entertaining and educational. 

This is especially the case for the more interactive parts of the aquarium, like Shark Lagoon where you can go from being a spectator to a member of this aquatic community.

You’ll have a hard time pretending you’re not as excited as your kids to feed the sharks, pet the sturgeon and stingrays, touch the jellyfish, and so much more.

You can grab your binoculars and watch the largest mammals on Earth from the beach for free. 

However, I highly recommend hopping on one of the whale watching cruises that leave Long Beach. 

Even if they feel shy that day and don’t show up, you’ll most certainly see their cute friends, the bottlenose dolphins, and a beautiful view of Long Beach from the water.  

Either way, whale watching in Long Beach is always a fun day out on the water.

Fun Things to Do in Long Beach

Get furry cuddles at feline good social club.

If you want to unwind during your time in Long Beach, head to the Feline Good Social Club . 

It’s a cat lounge founded by a caring lady where you can play and socialize with over 25 adoptable cats. 

Anyone who walks in the Feline Good Social Club leaves with record-high dopamine levels.

And who knows, maybe one of these purry creatures will steal your heart and come with you back home.

Take the Ferry to Catalina Island

It’s probably weird that I’m sending you off of Long Beach, but hear me out. 

Catalina Island is Southern California’s jewel and Long Beach is the location of one of the main departure ports to get to the island. 

So, trust me on this one and hop on the Catalina Express for a day trip.

This small California island with infectious Mediterranean appeal offers hands down the best things to do near Long Beach. 

Not only does it have the warmest water in SoCal and some of the most beautiful beaches to boot, but it also features diverse and colorful aquatic life and clear water for stunning snorkeling. 

Or, if you don’t want to get wet, there’s plenty more to do on Catalina in a day : wander the streets of the waterfront town, hike the island and spot the bison, grab a buffalo milk cocktail, or indulge your taste buds in delicious seafood.

Hang Out at The Hangar

Gone are the days when Boeing manufactured commercial and military aircraft in Long Beach. 

But a couple of years ago, their 17,000 square foot facility was turned into a vibrant retail and dining area where locals now love to hang.

So if you’re looking for things to do in Long Beach at night, stop by The Hangar , even if you’re with kids. 

Kids will have a blast in the playground area while you enjoy live music with a cold pint of beer and seriously delicious food. 

Have a Good Laugh at Que Sera

Que Sera is a bar on 7th Street greatly loved by locals for their cheap prices and busy dancefloor. On Wednesdays though they attract huge crowds for something else – the best comedy show in town.

They partner up with Bear City Comedy to bring the most hilarious comedians on stage – among them are quite a few familiar faces from Netflix, HBO, and Comedy Central. 

One thing is for sure, you’ll leave the venue with sore abs from laughing all night long.

Go Vintage Shopping on Retro Row

As you’ve probably already guessed from the name, Retro Row isn’t filled with high-end designer brands. 

What you’ll find instead is trendy clothing, soulful antiques, rare furniture, a diverse food scene, and a few hipsters milling about. 

Speaking of food, the vegan housemade falafels at The HipPea are so wholesome, even the carnivores rave about them. 

But if you want to avoid any surprises in terms of flavor, The Little Coyote is the place for you – they serve the best pizza made with fresh ingredients.

And once you’re here don’t miss the local legend, Fingerprints Music . This vinyl records shop is widely popular for hosting local musicians as well as big names like the Foo Fighters and Brian Wilson.

Located only a stone’s throw away from Los Angeles, the city of Long Beach has appeared in many famous movies and shows. 

Although, more often than not, it’s under the disguise of another US city.

If you grew up during the 90s, you’d probably want to visit the houses from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and American Pie . And if you’re a La La Land fan, go for a drink at the Blind Donkey. 

Free Things to Do in Long Beach

One of the loveliest secret places in Long Beach, The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is quietly hiding on the campus of California State University Long Beach. 

Although it’s smaller in size, the garden is an oasis of tranquility. Plus, its romantic appeal makes for one of the best date ideas in Long Beach.

Until recently there was an entrance fee but you can now visit Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden free of charge during weekdays. You’ll just need to make an online reservation ahead of time. 

Bike the Shoreline Beach Path

Whether you’re into biking or skating, the Shoreline Bike Path is always a good bet for exercising in a scenic area. 

It stretches 7.3 miles from one end of the city to the other and provides the best views of the ocean, especially during sunset. 

There are many shops along the path to rent a bike from, but those in Shoreline Village are usually the most convenient. 

Local tip: Although the walking lane is separate from the Shoreline Beach Path, ride with extra caution because it gets busy and pedestrians sometimes walk into the bike lane.

Watch the Sunset from Hilltop Park

Of all the things to do in Long Beach for couples, watching the sunset from Hilltop Park is certainly the cheapest and most breathtaking. 

The park offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Long Beach, Downtown LA, Orange County , the mountains, and the ocean. 

It’s the best place to watch the sky light up in colorful hues and the city lights turn on as the sun slips below the horizon.

That being said, finding parking around sunset can be impossible, so either plan to climb the hill on foot or visit earlier to find a spot.

Get Fit with Yoga on the Bluff

Just a block away from the ocean, there’s a green area known as Bluff Park where locals go twice a day to do outdoor yoga. 

And it’s not just because it’s free, the friendly teachers at Yoga on the Bluff have really created a heartfelt community with their free classes.

If you decide to attend one of the Yoga on the Bluff classes, you’ll remember the experience long after leaving Long Beach.

Show Off Your Disc Golf Skills at El Dorado Park

This local’s favorite 18-hole disc golf course has been drawing crowds for four decades. 

Although you might occasionally stumble upon some competitive dudes, most people are super friendly and chill and just want to have some fun playing disc golf.

The only downside to the course is that the trees in the park sometimes make it hard for beginners, but, all in all, it’s a great disc golf park with regular maintenance.

Experience the Long Beach Grand Prix

Every April since 1975, over 100,000 people gather downtown to watch the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach . 

The Grand Prix of Long Beach is a three-day event that offers world-class racing, interactive displays, and fun for the entire family.

The tickets range from $27 to $345 depending on when, where, and what you want to attend. 

Some Airbnbs with a direct view of the racing circuit get up to $6,000 per night! For that reason, you’ll want to book well in advance because, view or not, this is probably the busiest tourist time in Long Beach.

Unique Things to Do in Long Beach

Take a ride on the aqualink water taxi.

Offering an entirely different perspective of the Long Beach Waterfront and downtown, riding the Aqualink Water Taxi for $5 is worth every penny and more! 

Besides the spectacular views, there are also snacks and alcohol to buy onboard so the half-hour drive makes the perfect start to a romantic date night. 

Board the taxi at Alamitos Bay and ride to the Pacific Aquarium, the Queen Mary, or Belmont Pier – whichever route you pick, you won’t be disappointed.

Soak Up the Art at the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA)

Being the culturally diverse city that is, Long Beach is home to the Museum of Latin American Art – the only museum of contemporary Latin art nationwide. 

Although there are 1,300 pieces in the permanent collection, the Museum of Latin American Art doesn’t stop there. 

Understanding the importance that art has in society, the temporary exhibits always focus on underrepresented groups.

And if you love dancing under the starry sky as much as I do, you’ll love the Mariachi Nights in the Sculpture Garden. 

The tequila helps loosen up stiff feet and hips, and the tasty food will keep you happy all night long.

Go See the Skinny House

It was the year 1932 and Newton P. Rummonds bought a tiny piece of land measuring 10 feet by 50 feet – it was either that or never getting his $100 back. 

But can you build a house on such a tiny lot? Others didn’t think so, but Newton took the bet and proved them all wrong.

So today, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, this skinny Tudor-style home at 708 Gladys Avenue, is America’s skinniest house . 

And it has been inhabited ever since it was built. The last known owner, a nice cat-lady, lived in the three-story house at the end of the last millennium. In 2001 she decided to sell it, but to whom, remains a mystery to this day.

Take the Paranormal Tour on the Queen Mary

If you’ve ever heard of Long Beach before, you’ve also probably heard of its legendary ocean liner, the Queen Mary. 

Inaugurated in 1936, the transatlantic ship quickly became popular among Hollywood stars. Then World War II happened and the luxurious Queen Mary converted to the largest and fastest troopship in the world. 

In 1947, the Queen Mary welcomed passengers back onboard, reclaiming its old glory. Twenty years later, it set for its final cruise, docking permanently in the port of Long Beach and becoming a city landmark. 

With so much history on deck, it’s no wonder that the Queen Mary has been named the most haunted hotel in America. Throughout the years, there have said to be many ghost sightings and paranormal activities witnessed by visitors and staff. 

Don’t believe them? Then you won’t be scared to take one of the Twilight tours of Queen Mary . The guides take you to the most haunted places and just might convince you otherwise. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Same as the Museum of Latin American Art, this is the only museum in the US that’s dedicated to preserving the cultural and artistic heritage of the people of Oceania. 

Anyone who visits the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum only has words of praise for the curator, Fran, and the rest of the staff. 

Their permanent collection is a powerful reflection of the complex history of Oceania and the rotating temporary exhibits are just as well done, inviting visitors back time and again.

Outdoorsy Things to Do in Long Beach

Hike in white point nature preserve.

A wilderness oasis inside a concrete jungle, the White Point Nature Education Center and Preserve is the go-to place for locals seeking to reconnect with nature. 

Although the colors of the sky during sunset add a special flair, I find mornings to be the best time for a hike here. The trails aren’t as busy and the sun isn’t too hot yet. 

If you happen to visit in summer, prepare for a nature preserve in full bloom. July is especially magical when the sunflowers are in bloom.

Kayak in Naples Canal

There’s a long list of Long Beach water activities to enliven your visit. While some of them can scare off beginners, that’s usually not the case with kayaking . 

The calm waters in Naples Canal and the super friendly staff at Kayaking on the Water make it an easy and enjoyable activity for everyone. You can even take your dog with you ! 

For only $15 per hour, you get a one-of-a-kind tour around Naples Island and a close-up opportunity to see moon jellyfish and some open-air exercise while you’re at it. 

Have a Picnic at the Bluffs

Of all the outdoor activities to do in Long Beach, laying barefoot under the shade in Bluff Park, snacking on some light food, and breathing the salty air might be the most relaxing one. 

Due to its location, on one side you’ll enjoy a front-row view of the Pacific Ocean and on the other, the jaw-dropping mansions on Ocean Boulevard.

The serene atmosphere of Bluff Park is equally enticing to families with kids as well as to couples who want relaxed, romantic dates that don’t break the bank. 

Moreover, the park is usually packed with joggers and other folks trying to achieve their steps for the day.

Paddle Board in Alamitos Bay

It turns out that many fun activities in Long Beach include paddling in some way or form. 

Another beautiful place to explore in Long Beach is Alamitos Bay, right next to Naples, and sharing the same calm waters and charm. 

You can bring your own paddleboard or decide to rent one there. The friendly staff provide appropriate gear and walk you through the basics for maximum safety.

And if paddleboarding in still waters doesn’t excite you, you can check out the dolphin tours instead. 

On these tours, a boat takes you to the ocean where you can paddle with cute bottlenose dolphins that pop up near shore. 

Tours only take place on days when the ocean is calm enough to allow safe paddleboarding, but it’s a fun experience to have if you’re up for the adventure.  

Explore the El Dorado Nature Center

I’ve already told you about the disc golf course at El Dorado, but the El Dorado Nature Center offers even more. 

Some people go as far as comparing it to Narnia, so that might give you an idea of how beautiful it is. 

Trees and shade are scarce in Southern California, but not at El Dorado Nature Center. 

Turtles, squirrels, butterflies, and other lovely creatures will keep you company while exploring this slice of wilderness in the middle of the city. 

Throughout the preserve, you can walk along miles of paved and unpaved trails that go through scenic lakes and forests.

There’s no entrance fee if you walk in but plan to pay for parking if you drive there. 

Surf at Seal Beach

No, there aren’t any seals at Seal Beach and technically Seal Beach isn’t in Long Beach, but it’s the closest beach near Long Beach with good waves. 

You’d think that Long Beach would have some good surfing locations with neighboring surf hot spots like Huntington Beach, but, weirdly, that’s not the case.

Anyway, coming to Southern California and not hopping on a surfboard is like going to Italy and not eating pasta. 

Even if you have no idea how to surf (like me), you can always get beginner lessons to learn how to ride the waves. 

Finally, a water activity in Long Beach that doesn’t involve paddling! Opting for a day of sailing means you’ll get to ride the Pacific Ocean waves without even dipping a toe in the cold water (if you don’t want to).  

Charter a sailboat , bring your own food, and forget about any worries for two to three hours on the water. 

Depending on the time of year, besides the fantastic views, there’s also a good chance you might spot some local dolphins coming to greet you.

Local tip: Wear warm clothes because the breeze and ocean spray can sometimes feel like Chicago in January. Well, almost.

Best Time to Visit Long Beach

Since this is California , weather-wise there’s no such thing as a bad time to visit Long Beach. 

Nevertheless, being a coastal town, you’ll have a better experience in May through September when all events and outdoor activities are back in full swing. 

With that said, July and August are the hottest and most crowded, so it’s good to bear that in mind if you’re planning a summer visit. 

December, on the other hand, might be a good time to visit if Christmas is your favorite holiday. 

The whole city, especially Naples and Alamitos Bay, turns into a Christmas wonderland and the weather is still beautiful. 

How to Get Around Long Beach

As is the case with most big cities in Southern California, driving around Long Beach can be overwhelming. 

Instead of getting stuck in traffic and wasting time trying to find a parking space, consider some of the transportation options below. 

Passport Bus & Water Taxi

The Passport buses operate between downtown Long Beach and its major attractions. The best part about it? It’s FREE. Yes, you read that right. Just get on the bus and save yourself money, time, and stress.

The Aqua Bus, on the other hand, costs $1 and moves around the harbor.

A third option is the Water Taxi which costs $5 per ride and goes from the Aquarium of the Pacific or the Queen Mary to Alamitos Bay.

Electric Scooters

The city of Long Beach has partnered with several operators which are allowed to deploy up to 1,000 e-scooters across the city.

You can download the app and rent an electric scooter with a few taps.

Note: If you’re renting an e-scooter, please be careful moving around and abide by the rules. It’s illegal for electric scooters to ride on sidewalks and the maximum allowed speed is 15mph.

Just as the e-scooter program is run by the city, there’s another program for rentable bikes called BikeShare . 

They have different plans to choose from depending on how much time you’ll have in Long Beach. On their app, you can conveniently check locations and bike availability.

Or, if the city’s bike share program is a nuisance for you, there are at least a dozen bike rental places scattered across Long Beach where you can find yourself a two-wheel ride.

Note: If you want to visit Downtown Los Angeles, the Metro Blue Line light rail takes you directly there.

Tips for Visiting Long Beach

• Embrace the cultural diversity – Long Beach is proud of its culture and diverse communities. Embrace the cultural nature of the city through its food, unique neighborhoods, and annual events. Fun fact: There are more Cambodians in Long Beach than any other place in the world except for Cambodia. 
• Long Beach has its own airport – Before you book a ticket for LAX you might want to check for flights to Long Beach Airport from your destination. Even though it’s smaller, the airport is serviced by a handful of regional and major airlines and prices are often affordable, especially within California. Popular routes include San Francisco , Oakland, San Jose , Phoenix, Las Vegas, and more.
• Summer weekends in the city can get very busy – During the summer season, and especially during weekends, Long Beach streets, highways, and beaches get packed. If you’re visiting in the summer, plan out your itinerary ahead of time, book things in advance, and factor in extra time for traffic to prevent stressful situations.

If you want to enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Ocean without getting too sandy, try visiting grassy  Bluff Park , which runs parallel to the shoreline from the Long Beach Museum of Art to roughly Loma Avenue. The park's paved sidewalk makes it a favorite spot for romantic sunset walks and picnics that can be enjoyed on the green.

Long Beach is home to three incredible art museums, perfect for all tastes and budgets during a trip to the Los Angeles area. Naples Island is actually comprised of three islands in Alamitos Bay; when people talk about visiting this part of Long Beach, they are usually referring to the inner island, which is accessible by car. Every beach town has a main drag and in Long Beach, that's Second Street in Belmont Shore. Belmont Shore hosts a number of events throughout the year, including a chocolate festival, a sidewalk chalk art festival, a pre-Grand Prix event, the Haute Dog Howl'oween Pet Parade, and a Christmas Parade during the holidays.

Retro Row gets its name from the many thrift shops packed into just a few blocks. Hollywood costume and set designers are known to raid these shops to outfit movies and TV shows, so the vintage items sold here are always of the highest quality. It's a fun place to visit on any trip to Los Angeles and you might end up with a quirky souvenir to wear home.

Take in the View at Lighthouse Park

While you can't climb the lighthouse in Lighthouse Park (also known as ShoreLine Aquatic Park), this tiny peninsula jutting into Rainbow Harbor is a popular place for skateboarding, viewing the Queen Mary and Rainbow Harbor, and hosting picnics.

Nearby, check out the Long Beach Navy Memorial, which pays tribute to the city's naval history. Beginning in 1908, when President Theodore Roosevelt stationed 16 ships of the Great White Fleet in its port, Long Beach served as a naval town for over 100 years until the closing of the shipyard in 1997. The Memorial includes a flag mast from the Long Beach Naval Hospital, an anchor from a ship in the Great White Fleet, and a replica of the compass rose from the Naval Station Administration Building.

Tour Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Cerritos

Rancho Los Alamitos  is located near California State University and is the last remaining corner of a Spanish land grant that was given in 1784. Today, it serves as a living history museum that includes six agricultural buildings, a working blacksmith shop, an adobe ranch, an exhibit center, a gift shop, and several impressive gardens.

Nearby,  Rancho Los Cerritos , built in 1844, is one of the last remaining two-story adobe structures still in existence in Southern California and is now a museum. In the summertime, the ranch hosts free outdoor community concerts.

Housed within the Long Beach Convention Center , the Long Beach Performing Arts Center encompasses the Terrace Theater —which hosts traveling Broadway musicals, concerts, and major children's productions—and the Center Theatre, home to the award-winning International City Theatre, which hosts both plays and musicals.

The Carpenter Performing Arts Center , located at California State University Long Beach, is where you'll find Musical Theatre West and its splendid in-house musical theater company. Nearby, the Long Beach Playhouse  is a community theater where local residents shine on stage with high-quality performances presented throughout the year on the main stage or in one of its intimate studio theaters.

The East Village Arts District is an area made up of shops, galleries, and cafes in Downtown Long Beach. On the second Saturday of each month, the streets are closed to traffic for an Art Walk highlighting multiple art vendors, gallery openings, and live musical entertainment.

Long Beach Transit provides seasonal transportation between waterfront attractions via Aqualink water taxis , providing a fun way to get from the Aquarium of the Pacific or Shoreline Village to the Queen Mary, Belmont Pier, or the Alamitos Bay Marina. Utilizing public transit is also an inexpensive way to cruise around, even if you don't plan on getting off the boat—it is a 40-minute ride in each direction, after all.

If you're interested in the history of the city by the sea, the   Historical Society of Long Beach  operates a public gallery in Bixby Knolls, a neighborhood located about five miles north of downtown Long Beach. In addition to rotating exhibits from the historical archives and special themed displays that draw from community artifacts, you'll find a great selection of books about Long Beach as well as historic photos and postcards for sale.

Do a Day Trip to Catalina Island

Although you will have to leave Long Beach, a day trip or weekend jaunt to Catalina Island is a popular excursion from the area. Catalina Express  runs ferry service from Long Beach (as well as other ports like San Pedro and Dana Point) which takes about an hour one-way. Once you get to Catalina Island, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy, including hiking the Trans-Catalina Trail, visiting the botanical gardens, and going on a thrilling undersea expedition in a semi-submersible boat.

But it’s not all about watersports; Long Beach has hundreds of great restaurants, wine bars, cocktail bars, and incredible brunch spots that make it a foodie destination in itself.

There are plenty of things to do in Long Beach, each time you visit you will find something new to do. But with so many options, where should you begin? Here are our top 10 things to do in Long Beach that we recommend for first time visitors to the city.

1) Hire A Duffy On Alamitos Bay

A Duffy boat ride is a must in Southern California, and cruising around Alamitos Bay and the canals in Long Beach is the perfect place to do it. There are a few Duffy rental options including Boathouse On The Bay and London Boat Rentals . We went out for a 2 hour cruise with Boat House On The Bay and couldn’t recommend them enough.

The Duffy is big enough for a group and has a deck at the back with extra seating. You can bring your own snacks or arrange for these beforehand with Boathouse On The Bay – treat yourself to some prosecco and oysters and turn your ride into a luxury cruise! 

2) Take A Boat Tour Around Long Beach Harbor

Harbor Breeze Cruises offers a scenic boat tour of Long Beach Harbor, which is a great way to get out on the water and see the area from the ocean. These tours also visit Rainbow Harbor, Shoreline Village, Point Vicente Lighthouse, the Port of Long Beach, and go past the Aquarium of the Pacific.

You can often spot bottlenose dolphins, humpback whales, seals, orcas, gray whales, and more from these boat tours.

3) Go Kayaking In Belmont Shore

If you want to take to the water but want a more tranquil experience, you can rent kayaks in Belmont Shore and explore the calmer waters around this area. You can even paddle past the incredible mansions and through the canals in Naples. If you prefer to relax and have someone else do the work you can even take a ride in a genuine Venetian gondola ! 

4) Visit Retro Row And Visit The Unique Stores

Retro Row or Fourth Street is an area of the city with many restaurants and bars and unique boutique stores selling vintage products, retro furniture, and quirky gifts. This area also has the historic  Art Theatre, beauty salons, and spas.

5) Take A Walk Around Belmont Shore

Belmont Shore is a great location to take a walk around or hire a bicycle and has a large array of restaurants and markets to stop for lunch or pick up some fresh produce.

There is also a beach path to walk along the oceanfront, or you can relax on the beach. You can even take to the water and try sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, water skiing, go swimming, or stick to the dry land and have a game of volleyball.

During the summer, Belmont Shore has live music and local art displays on Thursday nights and many other events happening throughout the summer months. 

6) Visit The Attic On Broadway For Brunch

No weekend or girls’ getaway would be complete without a stop for brunch, and a great place to have brunch in Long Beach is at The Attic on Broadway .

This southern-style Instagrammable brunch spot opened in 2012 and is located within a 1920s’ style building. The idea and feel of the location are to remind visitors of a family brunch with the traditional favorites and some unique additions, including the famous MacNCheetos.

They also have an incredible Bloody Mary, which comes with an entire slider stacked on. They have great traditional southern cocktails famous in New Orleans – the hurricane and the Mexican michelada. And, of course, mimosas!

7) Purchase Some Souvenirs At Cityology

If you are looking for some gifts from your friends or family from your trip, Cityology is the right place to stop as it sells everything you can imagine and more. Other great shopping spots close by are the women’s boutique Elison Rd , the gift shop Luna, House of Intuition , and Blue Windows .

8) Visit Long Beach’s Answer To Italy In The Naples Neighborhood

If you miss Europe or want to get a feel of Italy, head to Long Beach’s Naples neighborhood. Fitting to its name, Naples resembles the infamous Italian city of Venice, divided into three islands, surrounded by canals and connected by beautiful arched bridges.

Even the street names in Naples are Italian. There is also Bella Flora Park within the neighborhood, which is home to the La Bella Fontana Di Napoli, a three-tiered fountain built in 1971.

A great way to explore Naples is to wander around the streets or take to the water on a paddleboard, kayak or gondola.

9) Learn To Roller Skate 

Before visiting Long Beach I had no idea that they had such a skating community. You will quickly discover that roller skating is one of the most popular Long Beach pass times due to the 5.5 mile beach path that makes the perfect skating lane. 

As well as the beach path there are several roller skating rinks, such as Bayshore Roller Rink and The Rinks. If you really want to get into the Long Beach lifestyle stop by Pigeons Roller Skate Shop on 4th street and pick up a pair of your own! 

10) Explore El Dorado Nature Center

El Dorado Nature Center is a 105-acre park perfect for getting back to nature and away from the city streets. The center has an abundance of flora and fauna with two miles of trails by lakes, streams, and forest areas. The nature center has an educational center, art gallery, and small gift shop.

My favorite hotel to stay in is the Hotel Maya , located in Downtown Long Beach in Queensway Bay. The hotel has taken inspiration from Latin America while also feeling at home in southern California.

This hotel covers 14 acres, with a 6,500 square feet of resort-style outdoor space, complete with a man-made beach, fire pits, day beds and an amazing swimming pool complete with poolside cabanas. The resort hotel has 199 rooms with a mixture of suites, water view rooms, accessible rooms, all in various configurations.

The resort also has water sports, tours, and the Latin-infused Fuego restaurant . If you don’t choose to stay at the hotel you can head to Fuego for brunch on the water.

Korean Friendship Bell

Located in San Pedro, the Korean Friendship Bell is located within Angels Gate Park. The bell was given to Los Angeles in 1976 by the Republic of Korea to celebrate the 200th anniversary of US Independence.

The bell is rung every 4th July, National Liberation Day of Korea (August 15), Korean-American Day (January 13), New Year’s Eve, and the 1st Saturday of each month.

Wayfarers Chapel

Wayfarers Chapel is located in Rancho Palos Verdes, on the Pacific Ocean coastline. Famous for its uniqueness and original design, with views over the ocean.

Point Vicente Lighthouse

Located just 30 minutes drive outside the city, the Point Vicente Lighthouse is located on a clifftop in Rancho Palos Verdes. Built in 1926, the lighthouse is used by the United States Coast Guard, but it is open for tours on the second Saturday of each month (except March) and during the annual Whale of a Day festival (March).

There are many hiking routes around the area to see the lighthouse and surrounding cliffs.

The Queen Mary

Located in Long Beach, the RMS Queen Mary is a retired 1930s British Ocean Liner which made its home in Long Beach in 1967. The Queen Mary is currently closed to visitors, but you can get great views of the ship from Lions Lighthouse, the dock outside of Parkers Lighthouse or a stroll down the water’s edge from the Maya Hotel.

The Aquarium

The Aquarium of the Pacific is a must-see for any traveler to Southern California. It is Southern California’s largest aquarium, has over 1.7million visitors per year and it displays about 12,000 animals and more than 100 exhibits that celebrate the planet’s largest body of water: The Pacific Ocean!

Its galleries represent both frigid waters from Northern parts of the country as well as temperate regions like those seen in San Diego, where you can see sea lions bobbing up and down at their enclosure.

Throughout the year there are art exhibits, performing arts shows, and cultural and community festivals to make science accessible to all visitors. Its Guest Speaker Series and Aquatic Academy courses offer visitors an opportunity to learn about ocean and environmental issues from the scientists. 

When Should I Visit Long Beach?

With an average year-round temperature in the 70s (20s Celsius), there isn’t a bad time of year to visit Long Beach. To experience the city with fewer crowds, for the warmer weather, and with less chance of rain, is it best to visit between May and September.

Lodging rates are slightly higher between June and August, but you can find some great accommodation deals in the spring and the fall.

Throughout the year, the city has a large number of festivals and outdoor events. Some great events are:

How To Get To Long Beach

The closest large airport to Long Beach is in Los Angeles. The  Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is located around 25 miles or just over 25 minutes (traffic dependent) from Long Beach. From there you can rent a car, or take a taxi into Long Beach.

Alternatively, Long Beach has a small, stress-free airport –  Long Beach Airport (LGB) , which serves a number of domestic routes via Southwest, Delta, American Airlines, and Hawaiian Airlines. The airport was recently named one of the Top 10 Small Airports by USA Today.

Long Beach Long Weekend Itinerary

Long Beach is a great destination to visit for a long weekend, weekend, or week-long trip.

Here is a sample long weekend itinerary to give you an idea of what you can fit in and some must-visit restaurants and things to do.

Friday is a great day to arrive in the city for a long weekend break, either by flying into LAX or Long Beach Airport or driving, depending on your location and preferred mode of transportation. My favorite hotel to stay in Long Beach is Hotel Maya , which resembles a Caribbean resort on 14 acres of Long Beach coastline.

After settling in at the hotel, a great place to go for dinner and drinks on Friday night is District Wine , a wine bar with an outdoor fire pit and indoor lounges. The restaurant normally has a wine special, and the prosciutto bon-bons are a must-try. 

Brunch is the perfect way to start a Saturday morning, and the Fuego restaurant in Hotel Maya is a great place to have brunch, with views of the city’s skyline across the water.

Saturday is a great day to take to the water and rent a boat on Alamitos Bay. Book a Duffy tour with Boathouse On The Bay ; they even have the option to get food and drinks delivered to the boat or purchase them before you depart for your ride.

After an early afternoon on the water, head to Retro Row for some retail therapy. Retro Row (Fourth Street) is a great place to purchase quirky gifts, high-end retro furniture, vintage clothes, and other great stores. Don’t forget to pop into Oh La Vache to buy some cheese, or you can order a cheeseboard. Across the street from there is a wine bar called Art Du Vin , where you can eat your cheese and have a glass of wine, handpicked for you by a knowledgeable sommelier.

Lola’s Mexican Cuisine is a locally beloved restaurant in Retro Row if you get hungry after your wine bar experience. Alternatively, another great dining option is   Parker’s Lighthouse , which has incredible views of the harbor, The Queen Mary, and the Lion Lighthouse. 

BO-Beau kitchen + rooftap, is a perfect post dining nightcap location, with the choice of a plush lounge or upstairs there is a “rooftap.”

Start your morning at Lion’s Lighthouse , this is the perfect vantage point to look back over at Parkers Lighthouse and view the Queen Mary. There is nearby parking and it is a quick walk from the carpark out to the lighthouse.

Another day, another brunch location, this time one of the most famous brunches in the city –  The Attic on Broadway which has incredible Bloody Mary’s and an extensive cocktail menu. The food is also delicious, with a mix of traditional southern favorites and unique additions such as MacNCheetos.

My favourite things on the menu are the beignets, the avocado toast and of course the mimosas!

A great Sunday afternoon activity is to take a walk along  Belmont Shore , with unique stores, a beachfront walkway, or just simply spend some time relaxing on the beach. This is an excellent location to go shopping: some great stores are Cityology, the women’s boutique Elison Rd , the gift shop Luna, House of Intuition , and Blue Windows .

After your stroll it’s time to say goodbye to Long Beach.

Other attractions include Shark Lagoon with 150 sharks and rays, Lorikeet Forest with five subspecies of rainbow lorikeet, and June Keyes Penguin, an underwater space dedicated to penguins.

2. RMS Queen Mary: The Famous Luxury Liner

A retired ocean liner dating back to 1936, the RMS Queen Mary, built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland, operated as a weekly express between Southampton, Cherbourg and New York. The ship, retired in 1967, survives as a local attraction with a hotel, restaurants and a museum which features a collection of Princess Diana's gowns, dresses, personal accessories, photographs and family heirlooms. Voted one of the Top 10 Most Haunted Places in America, the liner also offers tours of its "off-limits" areas.

Enjoy fantastic vistas of the ocean as you admire the decorative art exhibits from the early twentieth century. Though most of the artwork on display is from the museum's permanent collection, it also features rotating works by regional and national artists.

Continue your day as you make your way to Bluff Park. Situated between Ocean Avenue and the Pacific Ocean, this park is one of the most scenic places in Long Beach California . Used as an active military space during WWII, you’ll find stands of conceptual information, as well as the Memorial of Lone Sailor commemorating the city’s naval history. Embrace the 13 acres of this linear park as the vibrant green grass and the ocean view forge into one of the most fun things to do in Long Beach . Combine the long-distance view of Junipero Beach with the invariant sea breeze, gently swooping in the serenity of a sunny day.

Picnic at Bixby Park

Let the sunny day activities roll from Bluff Park to Bixby Park. Once part of Rancho Los Alamitos, the park is a 17-acre public space encompassing numerous historic and modern attractions. Plunge into adrenaline-inducing arcade games, ride an antique carousel, rent a bike, take photos, and grab gifts or souvenirs. Don’t forget to stop and take in the mesmerizing sunset and admire the views of The Queen Mary docked just across the way. 

Evening  

End the day in the Italian-style neighborhood of Naples. While it’s decidedly more Southern Californian than Neapolitan, this destination is definitely worth a visit. Leave your troubles behind as you embark to explore the various canals on a Long Beach gondola ride . Perfect for a romantic date for two or a wine-and-cheese night experience with your friends, you cannot come to Long Beach without experiencing a dreamy gondola ride. 

For the most memorable experience, we recommend getting here by boat. Long Beach’s public transit system includes water transportation - why shouldn’t it? Hop on a $5 fair shuttle to catch a boat ride around town from Rainbow Harbor to Alamitos Bay Landing, where you’ll find Naples and a little slice of Italy.

After exploring the community, continue the Italian vibes with an authentic, elegant meal at the highly acclaimed Michael’s on Naples. Request a table out on the rooftop patio to fully savor the relaxed Long Beach ambiance along with a superb dinner. Long Beach is a large port city in Los Angeles County in Southern California . With a population of 462,257 as of 2010, it is the second-largest city in greater Los Angeles as well as the seventh-largest city in the state of California.

Long Beach is a large coastal and port city in Southern California. It is situated at the very southeastern edge of Los Angeles County , bordering both the city of Los Angeles and Orange County , in a region known as the Gateway Cities .

Long Beach is recognized as one of the most culturally diverse cities in America. It has large percentages of Latinos and whites (non-Hispanic), as well as very sizeable percentages of blacks (non-Hispanic) and Asians.

You may hear different people say different things about Long Beach, either wonderful or horrible things. This is because the city has quite a large population, with a density rate greater than that of nearby Los Angeles. Therefore, like other large cities, Long Beach encompasses everything, such as large industrial areas, struggling neighborhoods, quiet middle-class communities and exclusive neighborhoods.

Long Beach has some nice people-gathering amenities and genuine tourist attractions, such as a world-class aquarium and the Queen Mary floating museum/hotel. Special events are also held in the city like the annual Long Beach Grand Prix (a premier racing event held on city streets) and the annual Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride event. When compared to other areas like Hollywood, West Hollywood, Santa Monica and West L.A., Long Beach may not always be at the top of someone's tourist visit to the Los Angeles area, but the city draws its fair share of visitors and has proven it can definitely hold its own.

By plane [ edit ]

Out of the five airports in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, Long Beach can easily be reached from three: Long Beach Airport (LGB), within the city itself; Los Angeles International (LAX), 22 miles away; and John Wayne (SNA), 23 miles away in Santa Ana. All three lie adjacent to Interstate 405. The other two airport options are Burbank ( BUR  IATA ), 37 miles away; and Ontario ( ONT  IATA ), 53 miles away. LGB will obviously be the most convenient to use location-wise and, being a smaller airport, provides less hassle; however, LAX offers more frequent service, service from more destinations, and better fares. Long Beach Airport is limited to around 40 daily flights, the vast majority of which are provided by carrier Southwest as of late 2020, as JetBlue moved operations to LAX.

• Los Angeles International Airport ( LAX  IATA ): is the nearest airport for travel with multiple US and foreign airlines to more destinations in the US and around the world. Travelers can take the 111 bus from LGB to downtown Long Beach Transit Center. Take Metro's "A Line (blue)" train from downtown Long Beach to the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks Station. Transfer to the westbound "C Line (green)" train to the LAX/Aviation Station which is connected to the airline terminals by the "G (Green) Line/Metro C Line" shuttle bus. The LAX Flyaway bus no longer go to Long Beach.
• John Wayne Airport ( SNA  IATA ), Santa Ana , Orange County : City buses are limited in getting across longer distances into Orange County as it will require multiple transfers. Renting a car (as you will probably need anyway) or Mickey's Space Ship Shuttle (Tel: +1 714 642-5399) are better options in getting into Orange County. This airport and LAX are about equal distances from Long Beach (albeit, in different directions) and although busy, it is somewhat less busier than LAX for a little less airport hassle.

By rail [ edit ]

Long Beach is linked via the Metro Blue Line to Downtown Los Angeles with connections to Hollywood, Union Station, Universal Studios, Pasadena, and East L.A. among other locations.

Amtrak and Metrolink service Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles. To reach Long Beach from Union Station, take the Metro Red Line to the 7th St/Metro Center station and transfer to the Blue Line to Long Beach. Fare is $1.75 and requires a TAP card, which can be purchased at any Metro station for $1. Note: the Blue Line goes through some inner city locations (such as Watts and Compton) and there are not dedicated security guards on the trains, so it may be discomforting to take the Blue Line late at night.

By ship [ edit ]

Carnival Cruise Line has a home port at the new 33.7513 -118.1888 2 Long Beach Cruise Terminal , next to the Queen Mary dock. Cruises return to this port from Baja California and the Mexican Riviera. Others begin or end trips through the Panama Canal destined for or having left major ports in the southern or eastern U.S. In season, some may go to or return from points North, e.g., Alaska. When cruise ships are docked, they receive service from many taxi companies, as well as various shuttle services (noted for LAX above) to and from local airports and select hotels and popular destinations.

A ferry to Catalina Island also operates from Long Beach.

By car [ edit ]

From the west (LAX, Santa Monica) or from Orange County, take the San Diego (405) freeway. Connect to the southbound Long Beach freeway (710) if your destination is downtown Long Beach. From the north, the Long Beach freeway (710) runs along the western city boundary, and the San Gabriel Freeway (605) along the eastern boundary. From the coastal areas of Orange County, a scenic and convenient route is Pacific Coast Highway (Rte 1).

By bus [ edit ]

The majority of the intercity bus stations and stops for the greater Los Angeles area are located in " Skid Row " east of downtown Los Angeles, downtown Union Station, El Monte, Huntington Park and/or east L.A. (along Olympic Blvd but can be elsewhere too). To a lesser extent some also have stops in Hollywood and North Hollywood as well. The following offer direct service to Long Beach:

By public transit from Orange County [ edit ]

There are several ways to get to Long Beach from Orange County if you don't or can't rent a car. The most direct way is to take Orange County Transit Authority's Route 50 bus servicing Katella Avenue, which passes between Disneyland and the Anaheim Convention Center. The western terminus of this route is California State University-Long Beach (CSULB). If you are in the Beach Cities, take Route 1 servicing the Pacific Coast Highway and also terminating at CSULB. Some trips on Route 60 (Westminster Avenue/17th Street) terminate at CSULA.

Get around [ edit ]

A car is the most convenient way to get around Long Beach. Most areas of Long Beach have free parking but be aware that much of Downtown Long Beach has pay parking lots. The free bright red Passport buses serves the Long Beach downtown and waterfront attractions.

Most areas of Long Beach are fairly safe, even after dark. There are two major areas that are not quite as safe and should be avoided after dark. Caution is called for even during the daytime in these areas.

The first of these areas is in the southwestern portion of the city. This area is bounded, starting from the southeast corner, by Redondo Blvd. and 4th, running north to the Signal Hill border. Along the Signal Hill border north-west to the 405 Freeway, along the freeway to the western border of Long Beach and Wilmington, down to 4th St.

The second and more dangerous of the areas is North Long Beach (north west of the LGB airport). The approximate boundaries of this area are from Del Amo and Cherry, north to the north border of the city, along the north border to the west border and back south to Del Amo. This area, which borders on Compton , has a reputation for gang activity and is one of the more active police and fire districts in the city.

Police [ edit ]

Long Beach has its own police department operating from four main stations throughout the city. Police can be reached by dialing 9-1-1 toll-free from any phone. The Long Beach Police now receive 9-1-1 calls directly from cell phones however calling 9-1-1 from a cell phone when near freeways will connect you with the California Highway Patrol. Fire/Emergency Medical Services [ edit ]

Long Beach also has its own Class 1 Fire Department. The Class 1 designation indicates that response times to emergencies average 5 minutes or less. To request emergency assistance from the Fire Department, dial 911 toll-free from any phone.

Every fire engine and truck is staffed by fire-fighters with Basic Life Support training. The department also has a number of Advanced Life Support certified Paramedic Ambulances strategically stationed around the city. Fire Department Ambulances are available for emergency medical transport to a hospital, however, be aware that you will be billed for transport.

These 4 California beaches are among best in the US, Travel + Leisure says. See where

California’s coastline offers endless hikes, stunning views and miles of sandy beaches.

Four of the Golden State’s beaches recently made Travel+Leisure’s 25 Best Beaches in the USA list.

Other popular spots across the United States included Ocean City in Maryland, Clearwater Beach in Florida and Poipu Beach in Kauai, Hawaii.

With summer on the way, here are some California beaches you should consider visiting:

What are the best California beaches?

Four spots in California offer the ultimate beach-going experience, according to the Travel+Leisure:

Coronado Beach in San Diego features a “1.75-mile stretch of golden sand sparkling with bits of the mineral mica,” Doherty wrote.

The beach has a dog-friendly section for those looking to enjoy the surf and sand with their furry friends.

Pope Beach, on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, is “a nearly mile-long stretch of sand bordered by towering pine trees,” Travel + Leisure said.

In addition to mountain views, the beach offers visitors opportunities to swim, picnic and participate in water sports.

A popular tourist destination, Santa Monica Beach combines a classic Southern California beach setting with a classic amusement park. The Santa Monica Pier features a roller coaster, a Ferris wheel and other carnival attractions.

“Nothing screams summer on the pier like funnel cake and a Ferris wheel,” Doherty wrote. “This vibrant stretch along the Pacific is also a prime spot for partaking in all the usual beach activities: sunbathing, swimming, surfing, volleyball and sunset viewing.”

Carmel Beach in Carmel-by-the-Sea “might be one of the most beautiful places in the U.S.,” Doherty wrote, due to its “lapis-colored waters and rocky shoreline.”

This white sand beach is a popular surfing spot with views of Pebble Beach and Point Lobos. It’s also dog friendly.

How did Travel + Leisure come up with its list?

Travel + Leisure looked at a variety of factors to coming up with its list, according to writer Patricia Doherty , who coversdestinations, resorts and cruises.

“Different criteria define the perfect beach for different people, such as the quality of the sand, the waves (or lack thereof), level of seclusion, public transportation and accessible parking, whether there’s a boardwalk, activities, and even the amount of shade,” Doherty wrote.

Travel & Leisure chose to simply list its favorite beaches rather than rank them numerically.
