If your stroller is not small enough to fit in an overhead locker (more on that below), you will be left with the option of checking it in at the time you drop your suitcases or getting it tagged at check-in, but wheeling it all the way to the aircraft door.

Some airports (it’s not the airline’s choice) may insist you do it one way or another, but most will give you the option to decide which suits your needs. So which method is better?

Taking your stroller to the plane door

• The obvious pro of taking it to the plane door is it can be used within the airport.
• In most cases, though, it is NOT immediately available when you disembark. You will still need to collect it from oversized luggage, so you will need to carry your tots & gear until this point on arrival.
• The con, you risk damage to the stroller by baggage handlers if it is not correctly packed and protected.
• You can still use a “gate check” bag at the plane door but do think about how much this inconveniences others. Getting a stroller safely trucked into its travel bag can be a bit of a procedure, especially if the wheels need removing.
• Ensure you’ve been issued a baggage tag, which remains visible once the stroller is inserted in the gate check bag.

Checking a stroller

• Checking your stroller with the rest of your luggage allows you to pack your stroller with the most protective packaging correctly.
• Gate-checking a two-piece stroller in a bag will keep the parts together, and only one luggage tag will be needed reducing the risk of separation!
• Umbrella strollers are a little easier as they come in one piece!
• Do check if the stroller is subject to an overall passenger weight limit or is it counted as one item; your airline may only allow one bulky extra, such as an infant car seat or stroller – but in our experience, premium international airlines allow BOTH
• If checking your stroller for free – take note of all that extra space you are getting for your baby gear! Stuff your baby blankets and clothing around the stroller to keep it even more secure!

Whatever way you transport your stroller, remove as many extra implements, such as  Mommy Hooks, stroller organizers etc, to minimize the risk of damage or separation of these items. We could find very few travel stroller bags that included zip pockets for these extra items.

The key features we look for in a gate check bag for our strollers are:

• Durable material that is waterproof.
• Double stitched seams.
• An easy way to carry and handle items, such as shoulder or back straps.
• An easy way to store the bag when it’s not in use.
• A wide opening makes it easier to insert the stroller.

It goes without saying if your stroller comes with a branded carry bag, this will be the snuggest fit for your stroller and a great choice for transporting it without damage.

The large travel systems normally charge extra for any travel bag, but it can be worth the investment, given how much the stroller originally costs. They will fit your stroller snugly and comes with padding and storage pockets for everything you need.

The main reason to choose a generic brand is that they are MUCH cheaper.  They will last you through the almost inevitable changes in stroller brands over the years. Being generic, though, do check it will fit with your brand. Also, look out for the following:

• Wheels may need to be removed and stored separately on some models to make them work
• You don’t want it too oversized, or the stroller will move around too much, still leaving it susceptible to damage.
• Even if the dimensions are large, how easy is it to get the stroller in? In our experience, fully opening bags with a zipper are easier to maneuver the stroller in than drawstring closure bags.

As you can imagine, a cargo bay is not especially clean and strollers may have to be transported through rain or snow. Travel bags protect strollers from germs and grime that may accumulate during travel, giving the parents peace of mind as they utilize their strollers at their new destination. So, after extensive research into the key factors essential to a great stroller bag, and after several hours of interaction with moms of experience (including my own), here is the list of top stroller travel bags this year.

With the exact same dimensions as the VolkGo stroller bag (47x24x18 inches), this bag has an enormous capacity.  It can cover and contain almost any standard or double stroller on the market without having to remove the wheels.  They also offer a fairly comprehensive list of compatible strollers on their website. 

Made of high-quality black nylon, the bag hides dirt and grime well during travel and can easily be machine washed when necessary.  The nylon material makes this bag waterproof as well.

Comprised of a lightweight, waterproof fabric, this bag is designed to keep germs, grime, and liquids away from the stroller.  The bag arrives in a small elastic pouch and unfolds to reveal a very roomy sack. 

After folding the stroller, the bag can be slipped over the stroller and the drawstring lock pulled tight. Two handles on the side of the bag allow you to hold it off to the side like a suitcase or pull it up over one shoulder.

When ready to be used, the bag slides over the stroller and can be closed with two drawstrings.  An extra flap comes over the remaining opening and is velcroed to the front of the bag.  The bag has a single handle on the front for a side carry or it can be carried by the adjustable backpack straps.

On one side of the bag, there are two cloth handles and one-shoulder sling with a movable shoulder pad on the back of the bag.  The opening of the bag has two drawstrings to cinch it tight and then an overlapping flap that is secured by Velcro to the front of the bag. 

On the inside of the flap is a small pocket for securing the extra drawstring cords.  This flap also houses a pocket for a removable name label. 

When not in use, this bag can be rolled up into a zippered pouch. 

While not an extravagant price, this bag is more expensive than most of its comparable counterparts.

All in all, parents who purchased this brand felt that the material was much stronger and durable than other brands.

A good airplane stroller bag will protect your buggy from scratches and nicks, stains, and bad weather, as well as offering a number of other benefits.

Why Buy a Travel Bag for Stroller?

Let’s be honest: strollers are expensive. They’re one of the biggest gear investments parents make, and they’re meant to last a good, long time, serving multiple children if needed. Add to that, many strollers have great re-sale value, if they’re well cared for.

In other words? They’re worth protecting.

A pushchair travel bag generally costs a fraction of what the stroller itself cost, making it a fairly affordable way to protect your investment when you head off on vacation.

Strollers take a lot of abuse when they go under an airplane. They can get scratched, stained, and otherwise damaged.

A good buggy bag will keep it in good condition, preserve resale value, and ensure it’s useable when you arrive at your destination.

Specifically, stroller covers for travel offer the following benefits.

Protecting your stroller is the main reason for buying and using a stroller transport bag. The right bag will offer:

• Protection from rough handling when your buggy is being loaded and unloaded from the airplane and transported between your drop-off/pick-up point and the airplane.
• Protection in-flight, when your buggy is packed like a sardine with other bags under the plane. Good stroller covers for airplane travel will protect the frame from scratches and the upholstery from stains and liquids.
• Protection from bad weather on the tarmac, when your buggy is sitting out in the open waiting to be loaded, or after unloading while it’s waiting to be transported to the baggage belt. No one wants to sit their baby down on a soaking wet stroller seat! Speaking from personal experience, we were more than pleased we had a stroller travel cover when we landed in Iceland and our stroller sat in the driving snow for ages before being delivered – dry – to us.
• Protection from dirt and grime. This goes hand-in-hand with keeping your buggy dry. No one wants to set their baby down in a filthy stroller – or at least in filth that wasn’t created by your baby! While you might not mind setting your kid down on that year-old yoghurt stain, you probably will feel differently about mystery stains accrued in transit.

If you have a have a two-piece stroller, or you have accessories attached to your stroller (buggy board, foot muff, cup holder, etc), a gate check bag will ensure everything arrives together.

Sneaky Extra Baggage Allowance

While you’re not supposed to, we’ve used the FREE stroller check to our advantage on past trips. Once our buggy is in its transport bag, we’ve stuffed a bit of extra baby gear into the bag itself. Things like the buggy rain cover, our kids’ snow suit during winter travel, footmuffs, and more can get stuffed into the travel bag to reduce the burden on your main bags.

What to Look for in a Pram Travel Bag?

Above all, look for durable construction that will withstand mishandling by baggage handlers. Ideally, you want a bag made from tear-resistant / rip-stop material, double stitching, a good quality zipper. The opening should be wide enough that you can get your pram in and out of the bag without too much wrestling.

Ensure the material is water resistant, at the very least, to protect your buggy from bad weather and mystery liquids in flight.

You’ll also want to consider the straps, to ensure it’s easy to carry. In our opinion, a should strap makes things easiest. On travel days, we’re usually already carrying a back pack in the airport, so can’t use backpack straps. Also, a shoulder strap helps you to attach it to a luggage cart if needed.

When not in use, you’ll want a way of storing the bag without too much fuss. Many come with a pocket you can stuff the bag into – sort of like a K-Way windbreaker.

Of course, bag won’t do much good if your stroller doesn’t fit into it. So double check it’s compatible before hitting the buy button!

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that these bags aren’t meant to “go the distance” so to speak. While they should last more than one trip, most of the bags on this list come with some comments from past users that they ripped or got holes on the first trip. Again, this comes down to the fact that travel is really tough on strollers, and not all airlines treat your stuff with care. While you can hope the bag will last more than one trip, know that they aren’t going to last a long time, because of the sheer abuse they take!

Branded vs. Unbranded Travel Stroller Cover

You’ll also have to decide whether you want a branded or unbranded cover.

Branded bags are specifically made for your stroller by the stroller manufacturer. The pro of buying a branded bag is you know it will fit, and a tight fit will help to protect the stroller further. The branded bags tend to be a bit better quality than the generic ones, using better materials, padding, and zippers. However, they’re also far more expensive. Also, if you choose to change strollers in the future, you’ll likely need to buy a new bag.

Generic/Unbranded bags are made to be universal to fit all brands of strollers. They’re much cheaper than the branded bags. However, the fit and quality generally aren’t as good.

Hollie Bond and her one-year-old Margot tested out the Joie Tourist stroller to see if it was worthy of its travel-inspired name. In our buying guide to the  best travel strollers , we named this best travel pushchair for taking on a plane because it's stylish, light enough to carry, and easy to fold.

The Joie Tourist stroller is very easy to assemble. ‘I put it together in about five minutes while looking after my busy one-year-old,' said our tester Hollie. 'There are easy-to-follow instructions, but it’s so intuitive you don’t really need them.’ Once assembled, it is a super lightweight pushchair that would be ideal for parents going on holiday with their toddler or wanting something for daily use if they have a small car.

The Joie Tourist has an ‘amazing’ one-handed mechanism to fold it up and down. ‘You can hold your baby or toddler while collapsing and unfolding the pushchair easily,’ added Hollie. It's compact when folded and has a nifty carry handle. Other features include a decent-sized shopping basket, multi-recline positions and an adjustable handle which Hollie - whose husband is tall - particularly appreciated.

While comfortable for the pusher, Hollie struggled with the recline positions and thought the seat a little hard. She also thinks you’d have to invest in a footmuff in winter and a sunshade in summer as the hood doesn’t provide a huge amount of protection. In terms of value, this is a great mid-range option that would suit parents who want a light pushchair that's also compact and easy to get in and out of a car.

Hollie’s first impression of the Joie Tourist was how light it is. At only 6kg, it’s perfect for taking off on an overseas holiday and you’ll have no worries about lifting it on and off the airport carousel, or in and out of the car boot. As well as its weight, Hollie was impressed by its size. ‘It’s quite a tall buggy (107cm in height), which is a real bonus for our family as my husband is very tall and we’ve struggled in the past to find pushchairs with high enough handles for him to comfortably push,’ she said. ‘The handle is easily adjustable too, so I could put it back to the right height for me very quickly.’

But the standout feature of the Joie Tourist is its brilliant, one-handed folding mechanism, which Hollie described as ‘by far the best I’ve seen on a buggy’. You simply squeeze and slide two buttons on the handle with one hand and the pushchair concertinas down into a three-way fold. To open it out again is just as simple. When it’s folded down, it’s compact enough to fit in a small car’s boot (with space for extra bags) and it has a carry handle so you can move it about when folded down very easily.

Comfort and features

The Joie Tourist uses straps and a buckle to keep children in place. The buckle is easy to click into place and the straps over the shoulder are nice and comfortable thanks to some very soft, spongy pads. The length can still be adjusted easily as the pads have poppers so you can remove them before changing the length of the straps. There’s also the option to have calf support in two positions. ‘As Margot is still quite young and has little legs I used the support in the horizontal position, but it’s good to know I can easily set it down for when she has longer legs,’ said Hollie. The wheels are pretty standard for a travel buggy but if they were any bigger you’d sacrifice how light it is.

One of the features Hollie didn’t like was the shape and design of the seat. The buggy has multi-position-recline options, however, while it’s great that it lies flat for naps, she found that it didn’t go up vertical enough. ‘There’s a simple drawstring to change the seat back position, but, however hard I tried, I could not get the back up straight enough for Margot to be comfortable when she was awake,’ she said. ‘She’s a very inquisitive girl so likes to see what’s going on and so was pulling forward a lot of the time rather than sitting back against the seat.’

Another slight gripe was the seat seemed quite hard and didn’t have particularly deep sides to it, so it isn’t the cosiest option. In terms of storage, the Joie Tourist's basket is average-to-good, but bigger nappy bags and handbags are quite hard to fit through the opening, so you’d want to have several smaller bags with you to make the most of the under-buggy basket.

Value for money

The Joie Tourist costs around £200. ‘There are much cheaper options out there and this feels like a middle of the market sort of price and product to me,’ said Hollie. ‘In terms of how the pushchair looks and feels, I’d say it’s a good mid-range travel option.’ She’d recommend this to busy parents who want a really light pushchair to take on holidays or days out. ‘Anyone who struggles to lift heavy baby products, or who has a small car, will love how light and compact this is and how easy it is to use one-handed,’ she added. It’s a chic-looking stroller, coming in a lovely soft grey, and the adjustable handle is comfy too so ticks the box for style-conscious parents.
