I. From Verona to Lake Garda by Train

The view from the medieval castle - Desenzano del Garda, Lombardy, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Travelling from Verona to Lake Garda by train is very easy and straightforward. In many ways, this is the most convenient way to get from Italy’s City of Love to Italy’s largest lake. Especially, if you are going to Lake Garda just for the day.

Two of the towns on Lake Garda have train stations. These are:

  • Desenzano del Garda – this is the largest town on Lake Garda. It has a cute historic centre, a Roman villa with beautiful well-preserved mosaics, a medieval castle, and a rich programme of events. It also provides easy access to many other lakefront destinations, most notably the absolutely gorgeous and very popular town of Sirmione.
  • Peschiera del Garda – this is a fortified town that incorporates five small islands. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It provides easy access to many lakefront towns. For example, Lazise, Bardolino, and Garda Town. It’s also next door to many of the large amusement parks on the shores of Lake Garda. Most notably, Gardaland , Gardaland Sea Life Aquarium , Caneva The Aquarpark , and  Movieland The Hollywood Park .

Desenzano del Garda and Peschiera del Garda are only about 15 km away from each other. Both are on the southern shore of the lake.

Verona has a couple of train stations. The main one is called Verona Porta Nuova . It is the city’s most important train station and it is also a major cross-junction railway hub in Italy. All train travel and directions covered in this blog post use Verona Porta Nuova as a point of departure.

Here are the relevant travel times:

  • Verona Porta Nuova to Peschiera del Garda – from 13 mins by direct train.
  • Verona Porta Nuova to Desenzano del Garda – from 23 mins by direct train.

Helpful Tips:

Simply put, there are two types of trains you can use to reach Lake Garda from Verona. One is the normal, regular trains (known as treno regionale ) and the other is the high-speed trains (known as Frecciargento , Frecciarossa , and ItaloTreno ).

Both the regional trains and the high-speed trains cover the distance from Verona to Lake Garda in roughly the same time, give or take a few minutes. At the same time, the tickets for the high-speed trains cost on average about three times more than the tickets for the regional trains.

As such, my suggestion is to use the regional trains for your trip to Lake Garda. Their prices don’t fluctuate and you can easily buy a ticket on the day of travel thus giving you a chance to visit Italy’s largest lake on the spur of the moment.

If you want, you can check train times in advance on Omio . This is my favourite search engine to research and book tickets for trains in Italy. It will give you a good idea of departure and arrival times

Omio pulls up a page with results from Italy’s railway companies and covers different types of trains. This way, you can immediately see who offers the cheapest prices and the shortest times and you can book your tickets on the spot. It really makes travel planning so much quicker and easier.

Just make sure that you arrive at Verona Porta Nuova train station with plenty of time to spare. It is a very busy railway hub and often there are long queues in front of the ticket offices and the ticket-vending machines. Navigating to your platform through the throngs of people can also be surprisingly time-consuming.

II. From Verona to Lake Garda by Car (Private, Rented or Taxi)

PuntaLido - Riva del Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Travelling from Verona to Lake Garda by car is very easy and convenient. Especially, if your destination is on the southern shores of Italy’s largest lake.

Unless you hit rush hour, travelling times vary from very short to super manageable. A modern, high-speed toll highway leads from Verona to many of the southern lakefront towns. This  helpful website  will give you an estimate of how much the tolls are going to cost depending on the specific itinerary you want to follow.

If you prefer, you can drive just on the provincial/regional roads which are free of charge. Travelling times on them, however, tend to be longer.

These main lakefront towns are the quickest to reach by toll road from Verona:

  • Verona to Lazise – 25 km and depending on traffic it should take from 25 mins to 35 mins.
  • Verona to Peschiera del Garda – 30 km and depending on traffic it should take from 25 mins to 45 mins.
  • Verona to Bardolino – 30 km and depending on traffic it should take from 30 mins to 45 mins.
  • Verona to Sirmione – 43 km and depending on traffic it should take from 40 mins to 1 h.
  • Verona to Desenzano del Garda – 44 km and depending on traffic it should take from 35 mins to 55 mins.

These travelling times are calculated starting from Verona Porta Nuova train station. Your specific travel time will depend on your point of departure in Verona, the type of road you choose to take (toll road and provincial/regional roads or just provincial/regional roads), the day, and the season.

Once at Lake Garda, you can then circumvent the whole lake by following the two branches of the lakefront ring road:

  • Gardesana Orientale – which runs along the western shores; and
  • Gardesana Occidentale – which runs along the eastern shores.

In general, you can reach the nearest to Verona lakefront towns like Lazise and Peschiera del Garda in about 25 mins and the farthest lakefront towns like Riva del Garda and Limone sul Garda in about 1 h 50 mins to 2 h 10 mins.

For your interest, here are some more average distances from Verona to the most beautiful and interesting towns on Lake Garda :

  • Verona to Garda Town – 38 km (southeastern shore);
  • Verona to Torri del Benaco – 44 km (eastern shore);
  • Verona to Salo’ – 62 km (western shore);
  • Verona to Malcesine – 65 km (eastern shore);
  • Verona to Toscolano-Maderno – 72 km (western shore);
  • Verona to Gargnano – 79 km (western shore);
  • Verona to Torbole – 81 km (northern shore);
  • Verona to Riva del Garda – 85 km (northern shore);
  • Verona to Limone sul Garda – 96 km (western shore).

Having a car at your disposal for your trip to Lake Garda is very convenient. It will give you a chance to access hidden gems, less busy beaches , and many other corners off the beaten path here. At the same time, during the high season, it may be difficult to find a parking space in the more popular lakefront towns.

Also, bear in mind that the travelling times from Verona to Lake Garda may vary widely depending on the day and the season. As there is only one road which circumnavigates the whole lake, traffic jams can happen, especially during the high season and on weekends.

For advice about dealing with parking, rush hours, traffic jams, and driving styles at Italy’s largest lake have a look at point 1 in this blog post:

  • 8 Best Ways to Get Around Lake Garda, Italy

For example, you can take the train to either Peschiera del Garda or Desenzano del Garda and then proceed by bus.

IV. From Verona to Lake Garda by Train and Ferry or Car and Ferry

Ferry boat - Peschiera del Garda, Lake Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com

Ferries crisscross the waters of Lake Garda and connect the many lakefront towns all throughout the day. Seeing the shores of Italy’s largest lake from the water is a very scenic experience. No matter if you are spending only a day at Lake Garda or have multiple days to spare for it, make sure that you catch a ferry to enjoy its beauty fully.

Here is how it works:

1. Train from Verona to either Peschiera del Garda or Desenzano del Garda and then ferry onwards

If you travel by train from Verona to either Peschiera del Garda or Desenzano del Garda , you can then continue your exploration of Italy’s largest lake by ferry. The easiest way to do it is to catch the ferry from Desenzano del Garda across to the strikingly beautiful town of Sirmione which is famous for its Roman ruins, medieval castle, and spa facilities. The crossing lasts only about 20 mins and the views are fantastic.

Alternatively, you can catch the ferry from Peschiera del Garda to Lazise, Bardolino, and Garda Town. This will give you a chance to admire the beauty of the southern and southeastern shores of Lake Garda from the water.

Click here to check the different ferry routes on Lake Garda and their respective stops, travel times, and ticket prices. Bear in mind that some of the ferry routes are only operational during the high season.

Verona Airport

Garda Town seen from above - Rocca di Garda, Lake Garda, Italy - rossiwrites.com-2

Verona Airport is the closest and most convenient airport for Lake Garda. Small and easy to navigate, it offers quick and very straightforward access to Italy’s largest lake.

Known both as Valerio Catullo Airport and Verona Villafranca Airport, its airport code is VRN. It stands next to the small town of Villafranca di Verona and is within a short driving distance away from Verona itself. Its official website is Verona Airport .

I love flying in and out of this airport as it is so close to many large cities in Northern Italy . The planes also fly over Lago di Garda thus giving you a chance to appreciate splendid bird’s-eye panoramas of the lake.

A shuttle bus connects Verona Airport to the city’s main train station – Verona Porta Nuova. On average, it runs every 20 mins or so. Click here to check its timetable. Click  here  to see the airport’s map which visually shows you the shuttle bus stop (look for the green rectangle in front of the Arrivals Terminal). Full Itinerary

Day 1: UK TO LAKE GARDA

You should arrive at your selected airport to take your flight to Italy.

On arrival, a coach will take you to the delightful lakeside resorts of either Malcesine or Riva del Garda; both beautifully surrounded by lofty peaks and situated at the more scenic north end of the lake. The rest of the day will be spent at leisure, allowing you time to settle into your hotel and start exploring if you wish.

Day 2: TOUR OF LAKE GARDA

Lake Garda first came to fame in the latter days of the 19th century when visitors came to the clean mountain air and it has been famous as an area of outstanding natural beauty ever since. Today, you'll have a tour of the lake, passing through some lovely, typically Italian villages complete with tiny harbours clinging to the shoreline with the mountains behind.

You'll call at Salò, famous as Mussolini’s last Republic after he had been captured by Italian partisans. There are some 15th century buildings and an art-rich cathedral to see before you continue your journey to delightful Sirmione at the lake’s southern tip. You'll also see lush groves of olives, citrus trees, and of course vines used for making the famous Bardolino wines. Scenically the shore varies from the rich vegetation of the middle reaches to the more rugged north covered with pine trees whose unmistakable aromas scent the air.

Day 3: THE DOLOMITES

Today, you'll head north to the stunning Dolomite Mountains; the geological activity some 230 million years ago gives them a gorgeous pink and lime-green hue. The foothills are green pastures studded with the occasional small shepherd’s houses, a few sheep and goats here and there, and pine forests stretching into the distance. Autonomous since the 12th century; the houses in the picturesque tiny hamlets resemble Swiss or Austrian-style chalets, low with gently sloping roofs and window boxes filled with colourful flowers. The people are different too; taller than Italians and speaking a dialect of German!

You'll have plenty of stops today as well as the opportunity to ascend on a cable car (subject to seasonal operation) to enjoy panoramic views of the whole area. There aren't enough words to describe the awesome splendour of this rugged landscape and its clean, crisp, and invigorating mountain air – it really will take your breath away. Due to its remote situation, it is also home to an array of rare and unique wildlife; so if you're lucky you could see chamois, ibex and golden eagles, and various deer.

Day 4: FREE DAY

Today is a free day to explore at your leisure. Riva del Garda has been welcoming visitors since the 19th century and today the old town is a collection of typically Italian buildings painted in pastel shades of cream, peach, magenta, and ochre so reminiscent of Mediterranean countries. It has several harbours with boats rising and falling with the gentle waves and is dominated by a medieval fortress. Nearby is an attractive square; beautifully lined with pavement cafés which all blend together to make Riva one of the most attractive towns on the lake.

Day 5: VENICE, CLASSIC OR UNDISCOVERED

After an early breakfast, you'll set out on the drive to Venice. You'll get to take a walking tour during which you'll see St Mark’s Square and its Basilica, the Campanile, and Doge’s Palace; together with countless other places of interest.

Many of the fantastic buildings you'll see today were built after the city's independence from Byzantium during the 15th century. St Mark’s Basilica is a must: built to house the relics of St Mark himself, it's Europe’s most exotic cathedral with its opulent indoor decoration - there are over 40,000 square feet of detailed colourful mosaics covering the entire interior. The blend of coloured marble columns, gold and red painting, and bas-reliefs combine to create one of the world’s most beautiful buildings.

Adjacent is the Doge’s Palace, home of the most powerful man in Venice and the seat of government councils and courts and also prisons. It houses amazing wood carvings, and one room alone has four Tintorettos in it. The floor is inlaid with exotic woods from around the world, and the walls and ceilings are decorated with paintings, frescoes, and gold leaf. St Mark’s Square is a must too and the focal point of the city since its foundation. Today though, visitors have replaced merchants, and you really must sip a coffee in one of the pavement cafés and absorb the beauty around you.

To see it all at once, why not take a trip up the imposing Campanile tower? For art lovers, there's Accademia, housing superb examples of Renaissance work, or there's the Guggenheim with exhibits by Miro, Picasso, Chagall, and Léger. But Venice is not just art and monuments – the city really needs to be seen from the water too, and what better way than by taking a trip on a gondola? You'll have sore feet when you return to the hotel but everyone at least once in their lives should visit this wondrous city.

If you've been to Venice before, perhaps join the tour of 'undiscovered' Venice with a local guide and explore the less-visited places. See the Santa Maria della Pietà church and the adjacent orphanage where Vivaldi taught music. Nearby is a modest Greek settlement, where you'll find a Greek Orthodox church with its classically Venetian exterior. A short walk takes you down narrow alleys to Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo; one of Venice's most significant squares and home to a Dominican church with impressive interiors and Scuola Grande di San Marco with its Tintoretto masterpieces.

Signature Experience: No visit to this city of canals is complete without experiencing it from the water. After the guided tour; immerse yourself in one of the world’s most romantic and inspiring locations, as you drift along Venice’s iconic waterways aboard a traditional gondola - capturing the mesmerising views at every turn that so inspired countless artists, poets, and writers through the ages.

Day 6: FREE MORNING AND VINEYARD VISIT

This morning you’re free to explore your surroundings as you wish. So what’s it to be? A stroll around the port is a charming way to spend your time, perhaps indulging in a little shopping or simply relaxing. Vineyards abound in this area thanks to the favourable climate, so this afternoon you'll get to visit a small family-run wine estate located in the fertile valley of the Trentino region; where you'll have a guided tour of the cellars, followed by a tasting of some of the wines produced by the family.

Signature Experience: Sample some of the finest wines of the region, savouring the flavours of a selection of superb produce on this enhanced wine-tasting experience. Sit down to a hearty rustic lunch lovingly created from the finest local produce; in the delightful authentic ambience of the owner’s traditional restaurant where you’ll be made to feel like one of the family.

Day 7: VERONA, CLASSIC OR UNDISCOVERED

Verona is one of the most beautiful and pleasant cities in Italy and today you'll have a guided walking tour to appreciate it at its best; discovering its hidden side too. You'll approach through the centuries-old city walls – when you enter the old town you can't help but admire the medieval pink-hued buildings complete with contrasting frescoes underneath archways, typical pavement cafés, tiny narrow streets with tasteful shops, and the marketplace dating from Roman times.

The tragic story of Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona and has inspired countless films, poems, and dramas. You can see the balcony where the immortal words “O Romeo, Romeo” were reputedly spoken. Witness the awe-inspiring Roman arena, medieval and Renaissance squares and courtyards, the 12th-century cathedral, the Roman Theatre, one of Renaissance’s finest gardens with clipped box hedges, and the Romanesque San Zeno church.

This afternoon is free so you can explore as you wish, or you could go shopping. Italy is inextricably linked with fashion, style, and chic, and Verona has some lovely shops with prices not nearly as expensive as you may imagine, with leather ware being particularly good value. For those who have been to Verona before, the ‘undiscovered’ tour is the best way of seeing a different side of this city, including many hidden cultural and architectural gems that most visitors never see.

Signature Experience: After the guided tour of Verona, take stock and reflect on this legendary city’s ethereal beauty over a refreshing aperitivo just like a local. Soak up the atmosphere and views of its magnificent architecture and Roman amphitheatre as the echoes of history ring out over the exquisite domes and spires of this magical place.

Did you know that Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake is quite close and well-connected to the romantic city of Verona? Verona is known to be the setting of the most famous love story of all times: Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare and the Arena of Verona.

But there’s much much more to be discovered in this northern Italian city! Verona makes a great day trip to take from different locations around Lake Garda.

NO matter whether you’re planning a day trip or prefer to do an extended stay, this guide provides detailed information and transport options designed to show you exactly how to get from Lake Garda to Verona by train, car, bus, and guided tour .

What's in this guide?

Lake Garda to Verona

With this Lake Garda to Verona guide, I’ll cover distances between some towns and villages around Lake Garda and Verona, travel times, and other tips for a smooth trip.

Let’s start off by looking at where Verona is located in relation to Lake Garda.

Where is Verona?

Verona is one of the largest cities in northern Italy, belonging to the Veneto region , in northeast Italy. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and travellers from all over Europe and beyond visit Verona for its Arena , the Roman amphitheatre, Juliet’s balcony and house and its beautiful piazzas and old streets .

juliets house verona

Situated about 121 kilometres west of Venice (about a 1-hour and 15-minute drive), 150 kilometres east of Milan and 30 kilometres east of Lake Garda (Peschiera del Garda), Verona is a great city to start your tour of amazing places in northern Italy.

See my 10-day northern Italy itinerary for even more inspiration. I’ve outlined various activities and attractions as well as the best way to get from one place to the next.

Two other places you can easily reach from Verona are:

  • the Valpolicella wine region
  • the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites

Then, if you want something more obscure, you have some of the less visited cities in Veneto such as Vicenza and Padua or even Mantua and Brescia (in Lombardy).

How far is the Lake Garda from Verona?

The closest town to Verona from Lake Garda is Peschiera del Garda. This town is 30 kilometres away from Verona and you can either get from there to Verona by train, car or bus. The cheapest and fastest way is by train as it takes only 14 minutes.

The distance between Verona and Lake Garda varies depending on the exact locations you’re travelling between. Here’s a list of popular lakeside destinations that are both well connected to Verona by car and public transport (train and bus).

  • Peschiera del Garda to Verona: 30 km.
  • Sirmione to Verona: 41 km.
  • Desenzano del Garda to Verona: 44 km.
  • Lazise to Verona: 25 km.
  • Bardolino to Verona: 37 km.

I recently wrote an itinerary that covers the same 3 days in Lake Garda that I spent around the lake if you are still there and would like some travel inspiration.

Where to stay in Verona?

For your stay in Verona, I recommend booking accommodation in the historic centre or at least just short walk from it . This will allow you to reach the attractions easily and return to your hotel at anytime you want (or need) to take a break.

Now we have covered the distance and some things to expect. Let’s begin to look at all the options available to you to get from some towns on Lake Garda to Verona.

This way you can make a decision based on your travel priorities, plans and budget.

Train from Lake Garda to Verona

Taking the train from Lake Garda to Verona is often the fastest and most convenient option you have available.

peschiera del garda train station

Trenitalia operates regional direct trains connecting Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano del Garda to Verona Porta Nuova station , Verona’s main train station (to not confuse with Verona Porta Vescovo).

  • Peschiera del Garda to Verona: Approximately 13 minutes
  • Desenzano del Garda to Verona: Approximately 23 minutes

You can catch trains from either the Peschiera del Garda or Desenzano del Garda stations, both of which offer frequent services to Verona .

You don’t need to get the ticket in advance because for this type of route by regional train, prices remain the same. You can purchase your ticket online via the Trenitalia website or get a paper ticket at the ticket machines or ticket office at the stations.

Remember to validate the paper ticket before boarding the train at the validating machines that you can find around the station or at the platforms. Avoid pricey fines!

Driving from Lake Garda to Verona

When taking this journey, I have found that hiring a car and driving from Lake Garda to Verona gives you flexibility and the opportunity to explore more along the way and means that you can stop wherever you please on your way to Verona.

maddy driving northern italy

It’s also the best option if your northern Italy itinerary includes other places that can be explored better by car. I’ve noted the best cities in Veneto to visit on this blog.

The A4 motorway connects some lakeside resorts to Verona such as: Peschiera del Garda, Sirmione and Desenzano del Garda . If you want to leave from Lazise or Bardolino get the Strada Provinciale 5 and then Strada Statale 12 .

Travel times vary depending on the traffic conditions. If possible, avoid the peak hours between 7 to 9am and 4 to 7pm:

If you have time for a road trip then you can stop at different locations along the Gardesana Occidentale road before heading to Verona.

Bus from Lake Garda to Verona

ATV (Azienda Trasporti Verona srl) is the company managing public transport in the municipality of Verona and nearby municipalities. There are regular buses from Lake Garda towns to Verona .

bus from lake garda to verona

There’s also another bus company called Arriva Italia srl that connects various places on the lake to Verona. The buses may take longer than trains but offer scenic views and multiple stops in smaller towns.

If you have time to explore at a slow pace within a budget, I definitely recommend getting around by bus.

To keep it simple and straightforward, see the table below that shows which bus to get from some popular lakeside towns to Verona.

Other bus lines connecting more places around Lake Garda to Verona are the number 162, 164 and 165 .

If you want to go to Verona airport from Lake Garda, there’s a summer bus service by ATV, the line 482 that leaves from different towns and villages such as Garda, Bardolino, Pacengo, Gardaland and Peschiera del Garda . This service is available every hour.

Check bus schedules and stops on the official ATV and Arriva websites for the most accurate information. Google Maps is the perfect tool to check the closest bus stops to where you want to leave from and the closest arrival stop to your hotel in Verona.

You can buy bus tickets from the bus driver without surcharge (carry some cash with you to pay for the fare) or online and through the bus company app.

Full-day Tour to Verona from Lake Garda

Joining an organised group from Lake Garda to Verona is another option to consider, especially if you don’t really like the idea of using public transport or hiring a car.

One of the charms of Verona is its compact nature, making it easily walkable. With every step, you tread upon centuries of stories and legacies. After a brief and pleasant walk, I’d recommend dropping off your bags at a centrally located hotel which you must have booked prior.

Day 1: Morning in Verona: Dive into History and Romance

Just moments from the central hotels, you’ll find yourself stepping into Piazza Bra, the largest square in Verona. Dominating this space is the impressive Arena di Verona, a testament to Roman grandeur and a living piece of history that still resonates with performances today. Nearby, the ornate Bra Gate reminds visitors of the city’s fortified past. And if you glance around, you’ll also notice the lush park where the Fountain of Alps takes center stage. This area offers a green respite amidst the urban setting. Feel its stories of the past, each corner of this square has its own tale to tell.

Via Mazzini

As you wander down this bustling pedestrian boulevard, you’ll quickly understand why it’s Verona’s premier shopping street. Lined with beautifully preserved historic buildings, Via Mazzini showcases a blend of high-end boutiques, traditional Italian gelaterias, and artisanal shops.

The marble-paved pathway underfoot adds to the luxurious atmosphere. Even if you’re not in the shopping mood, pausing to admire the window displays, savouring an authentic gelato, or simply soaking in the lively ambiance is a must. It’s a delightful stretch where modern Italian elegance seamlessly melds with Verona’s rich history.

Juliet’s House (Casa di Giulietta)

Tucked away in a quieter corner, not far from the bustling Via Mazzini, stands the reputed residence of Shakespeare’s Juliet.

As you step into the courtyard, you’re met with the iconic balcony that has inspired countless romantic tales. Graffiti-covered walls and love notes left by visitors add to the place’s unique charm. Though historians debate its authenticity, the house is a testament to the enduring allure of the tale of Romeo and Juliet.

For a comprehensive experience, consider joining a walking tour that combines Via Mazzini’s shopping charm with the romantic allure of Juliet’s House. Many local tours offer insights into these landmarks, along with hidden gems and stories that only locals would know. It’s a wonderful blend of Verona’s vibrant modern life and its timeless romantic legacy, often a highlight for visitors to Verona and Lake Garda.

Verona’s Duomo (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Matricolare)

Step into the serene esteemed cathedral in Verona, the Santa Maria Matricolare. Situated amidst the city’s urban hustle, the Duomo stands as a peaceful haven. There are some highlights which you may want to look out for:

The Facade: A blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, the Duomo’s facade presents a mesmerizing tableau of biblical scenes, saints, and prophets.

Interior Art: The cathedral houses masterpieces by Veronese artists, but the star attraction is Titian’s “Assumption of the Virgin”, a work that beautifully captures the Renaissance spirit.

The Crypt: Beneath the main altar, the crypt is a spiritual sanctuary, with its ancient pillars and a sense of tranquility that transports you back through the ages.

Take a moment to breathe, reflect, and let the cathedral’s ambiance touch your soul amidst the excitement of your Verona exploration.

Verona Arena Italy

Day 1: Afternoon in Verona

Piazza delle erbe.

Piazza delle Erbe stands as one of the most storied squares in Verona. Originally the site of the Roman Forum, the square’s history is as rich as its vibrant marketplace atmosphere today.

Over the centuries, it has been the city’s focal point for trade, politics, and daily social life. I’ve always been drawn to its mix of ancient and modern energies. From the frescoed Mazzanti Houses to the Madonna Verona Fountain, there’s always something to catch your eye.

It’s no wonder everyone gravitates here, be it for shopping, dining, or simply soaking in the ambiance.

Basilica of San Zeno

The Basilica of San Zeno is not just another church in Italy; it is Verona’s finest example of Romanesque architecture.

Dedicated to Verona’s patron saint, St. Zeno, the basilica and its adjoining abbey have stood since the 12th century. Inside, you’ll find enchanting frescoes and the famous bronze doors that depict biblical scenes.

Its peaceful cloisters and the striking rose window, known as the “Wheel of Fortune”, are just a few reasons why I consider it a must-visit.

Castelvecchio, Museum and Ponte Scaligero

The Castelvecchio Museum, cradled within a medieval castle, provides a captivating journey back in time. Commissioned by the ruling Scaligeri family in the 14th century, the castle stands as a testament to Verona’s military might and architectural prowess.

As you wander its halls, you’ll encounter art that spans centuries, from Roman sculptures to Renaissance paintings. The castle itself, with its robust walls, seven towers, and the iconic Scaliger Bridge, speaks of a time when fortresses weren’t just for defense, but also symbols of power. It’s an immersion into the city’s rich past and a place where history comes alive.

Step outside and the Ponte Scaligero awaits. This fortified bridge, with its signature red-brick arches, was historically a critical escape route for the lords of Verona.

As you walk across, you can almost feel that you’re stepping back centuries. The bridge not only offers a unique vantage point over the Adige River but also connects you directly to the heart of Verona’s history.

Day 1: Evening of Verona and Lake Garda Itinerary

Ponte pietra & its surroundings.

As the evening sets in, there’s no place like Ponte Pietra to witness the city’s transition from day to night.

This ancient Roman bridge, the oldest in Verona, has stood the test of time and war. As you tread its storied stones, the ruins nearby and the Adige River below offer a rich tapestry of Verona’s history.

For a panoramic view of the city, consider hopping on the nearby cable car that will whisk you up to the hilltop viewing points. From there, the Roman theater and the sweeping city vistas create a tableau that feels almost surreal.

This is Verona – where every corner has a story, and every view, a charm.

Dinner at Ristorante Maffei

After the visual feast, it’s time for a culinary one. Ristorante Maffei, tucked away in Piazza delle Erbe, is an epitome of Veronese elegance. From its refined interiors to its renowned wine stock, it promises an experience, not just a meal. But remember, it’s a sought-after spot, so a reservation is essential to ensure you have a seat at this iconic dining venue.

Day 2: Immersing in Verona’s Essence and Beyond

Day 2 morning: breakfast.

Wake up to the sweet aromas of Verona. I always vouch for breakfast at the hotel, but if you’re feeling explorative, stepping into a nearby café for a cappuccino and freshly baked pastries becomes an immersive experience.

Day 2: Morning Activities

Option 1: Valpolicella Wine Tour – I cherish my memories of the Valpolicella region, especially with its renowned Amarone. Here, you’re amidst rolling vineyards, savouring the art of wine-making, and of course, tasting some exquisite wines.

Option 2: Panoramic Bike Tour – For the adventurous at heart, the Veronese countryside is a treat. Pedal through scenic routes, breathe in the rustic air, and feel the Italian countryside embrace you.

PRO TIP: I’d suggest starting cycle tours or winery visits in the morning. You’ll appreciate the cooler temperatures and enjoy a more personal experience without the crowds.

Day 2 Afternoon Choices of Verona and Lake Garda Visit

Back to the cobblestoned pathways of Verona.

If you’re anything like me, there might be a site or a hidden alleyway left to explore. Or perhaps, some souvenir shopping calls? The artisan shops of Verona have treasures aplenty.

However, if a change of pace and scene beckons, here’s a thought: after your morning tour, make your way to Sirmione. It’s the perfect segue to start your Lake Garda adventure, where every view is a postcard come to life.

Day 2 Evening Under the Stars

Summer nights in Verona have their own symphony – the Verona Opera at the Arena di Verona. If you’re here during this magical season, I can’t recommend it enough. The combination of stellar performances under a star-studded sky is ethereal.

If opera isn’t on the cards, Verona by night is still a romantic serenade, with its lantern-lit pathways and ancient whispers. Find out more about this exclusive activity here.

From Verona to Lake Garda: Selecting a Good Base and Accommodation

Where’s the ideal base in Lake Garda, you may wonder? Or where are the best towns and accommodations?

I suggest that for the “best” base, you look no further than the southeastern shore of Lake Garda, particularly between Garda town and Peschiera del Garda. This region, brimming with attractions such as theme parks, an aquarium, waterparks, and lively markets, serves as a prime hotspot.

It’s the perfect blend of entertainment and scenic beauty, making it a traveller’s favourite. For many travelers, Sirmione stands out as an ideal base in Lake Garda. Located on a peninsula with easy access to other parts of the lake, it boasts the historical Scaliger Castle, thermal spas, and a vibrant atmosphere.

While Sirmione tops many lists, other popular options include Desenzano and Peschiera.

However, if you’re seeking a tranquil retreat amid majestic mountains and serene lake waters, consider Riva del Garda or Torbole. Both towns offer a peaceful ambiance, away from the bustling tourist centers, allowing you to truly immerse yourself in Lake Garda’s natural splendour.

In Lake Garda, selecting the best base largely depends on what you’d like to do and experience. Considering convenience, and activities, the following towns are suggested, along with Sirmione as the recommended base.

Riva del Garda

If you’re focusing on the northern part of the lake, Riva del Garda can be a good base. It’s especially popular among windsurfers and sailors due to the steady winds in this part of the lake.

While it doesn’t have a train station, it’s well-connected by buses and boats.

Riva del Garda is a picturesque town at the northern tip of Lake Garda and has some lovely accommodations to choose from. Here are a few recommendations across various budgets:

9.4/10.0 Superb > Lido Palace: A luxurious 5-star hotel that dates back to the early 1900s. Set in a beautiful park, it offers top-notch amenities including a wellness center and two restaurants. Its lakeside location offers stunning views and easy access to the town center.

Regardless of where you choose to stay, Riva del Garda offers a mix of serene lakeside views, mountain backdrops, and historical charm. Ensure you book in advance, especially during peak seasons, to secure the best rates and availability.

PRO TIP: I’ll suggest that if you prioritize train connections and a lively atmosphere, Desenzano or Peschiera are great choices. However, if you’re looking to indulge in the charm of a spa town with rich history, Sirmione could be your pick. And for those focused on the northern lake and its activities, Riva del Garda might be your best bet.

How Convenient Is It To Access Boat or Ferry Rides in Lake Garda?

All four towns – Desenzano del Garda, Peschiera del Garda, Sirmione, and Riva del Garda – have boat services available to explore Lake Garda.

The lake has a well-connected boat service that allows visitors to hop from one town to another, making it a popular and scenic way to explore the region.

Desenzano del Garda: Being one of the larger towns on the lake, it has a significant harbour and offers regular boat services. The ferries here can take you to various towns around Lake Garda, and there are also options for private boat tours.

Peschiera del Garda: Located at the southern tip of Lake Garda, Peschiera also has a good ferry service. Its strategic location makes it easy to travel both up the eastern and western shores of the lake.

Sirmione: Known for its picturesque views and the Scaliger Castle, Sirmione also has boat services. The boat rides from here offer a unique perspective of the town as you sail away or approach it, especially with the castle in view.

Riva del Garda: Uniquely positioned on the northernmost tip of the lake, Riva del Garda serves as a key hub for boat rides exploring the northern parts of Lake Garda. With its majestic mountain backdrop, boat journeys from Riva offer some of the most breathtaking sceneries on the lake.

Whether you’re heading down the lake or exploring closer towns, Riva’s boat services are efficient and provide an unparalleled experience.

PRO TIP: If you’re looking to explore multiple towns around Lake Garda, any of these towns can serve as a good starting point. However, if you want more frequent boat services and connections, Desenzano and Peschiera might be slightly more advantageous due to their size and location.

Verona and Lake Garda: Day 3 and Day 4

Lake garda: 2 days and 2 nights.

I’ve crafted an itinerary that begins in the historic charm of Sirmione.

I’ve chosen Sirmione for its strategic location, making it easy for you to hop on boat rides exploring both the eastern and western shores of the lake. With Relais La Speranzina in Sirmione as my recommended stay, envision effortless explorations and scenic boat journeys.

Splendidly poised on a narrow peninsula, Sirmione exudes an enchanting charm. As you meander through its pedestrianized streets and unwind in delightful cafes, you can’t help but be completely entranced. I was utterly captivated by the ancient Scaliger Castle, and there’s something undeniably magical about the ambiance near those historical walls. Though Relais La Speranzina in Sirmione isn’t nestled within the castle walls, its close proximity ensures you’re always just a heartbeat away from that enchantment.

You’ll be transported back in time with landmarks like the Grotte di Catullo. And don’t forget the therapeutic thermal springs that promise relaxation amidst your wanderings.

Day 3 in Lake Garda of Your Verona and Lake Garda Itinerary

South to Central Lake Garda Exploration

Day 3 Morning: Arrival in Sirmione

From the moment you step into this gem of a town, the allure is evident.

Sirmione is celebrated for its thermal spas and the impressive Scaliger Castle, standing tall since the 13th century. This medieval fortress, surrounded by water, seems to emerge straight from the pages of a storybook.

Settling In

After absorbing the initial beauty of the place, I suggest you check into your hotel and lighten your load.

The streets of Sirmione beckon! As you meander, you’re bound to stumble upon the Grotte di Catullo. Here, you can marvel at the remnants of a Roman villa, a silent testament to a time long gone. The villa, which is one of the most significant examples of Roman private edifices in the north of Italy, offers panoramic views of the lake.

Day 3 Afternoon

All that exploration surely calls for a hearty meal! What could be better than a lakeside restaurant in Sirmione? Let the gentle breeze and the shimmering waters accompany your meal.

Osteria al Torcol : This eatery is renowned for its authentic Italian dishes in Verona and Lake Garda. Located slightly away from the more crowded areas, it promises a serene atmosphere. Dive into their delectable pasta dishes, fresh fish, and don’t forget to try their tiramisu for dessert. Its garden setting is perfect for a relaxed midday meal. Check Reviews here .

Journey to Peschiera from Sirmione

Post-lunch, hop on a boat for a scenic ride from Sirmione to Peschiera.

Taking a boat from Sirmione to Peschiera del Garda is a breeze. During the tourist season, boats run frequently, connecting the two towns in a scenic 20 to 30-minute ride.

Tickets are easily available at Sirmione’s boat terminal, and the journey offers stunning views of Lake Garda and the mountains.

Upon arrival in Peschiera, you’re immediately positioned to explore its main attractions. This boat trip is not just a commute but a beautiful experience on Lake Garda.

Peschiera del Garda is not just a transit point but a destination that deserves your time and attention. After your serene boat ride from Sirmione, you’ll find yourself in the charming embrace of Peschiera. This fortified town, with its robust walls and the gentle Mincio river flowing out, captivates with the azure tranquility of Lake Garda.

Explore Peschiera

The star-shaped fortress and ramparts, a testimony to the town’s strategic importance in the past, are a UNESCO World Heritage site and are particularly eye-catching. They illustrate a fascinating aspect of European military architecture that is both imposing and beautiful.

While in Peschiera, I suggest taking a leisurely walk along the picturesque harbour. The vibrant atmosphere here is contagious, with locals and tourists from Verona and Lake Garda mingling, yachts bobbing in the gentle waves, and the distant mountains providing a majestic backdrop. The colourful facades of historic buildings reflect onto the water, adding to the town’s charm.

Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the town center’s narrow streets, where local shops offer everything from souvenirs to exquisite Italian fashion. Here, you can savour a gelato or a shot of espresso at one of the many welcoming cafes.

Peschiera also serves as a gateway to the Veneto region, making it a perfect spot if you’re interested in extending your travels to include Venice. Its multifaceted appeal — from historical intrigue to natural beauty — ensures a rich experience for every visitor.

Peschiera del Garda waterfront

From Peschiera to Desenzano

Your next stop, Desenzano del Garda, pulsates with energy. Known for its vivacious nightlife and sandy beaches, it’s a fusion of the old and new.

Travelling from Peschiera del Garda to Desenzano del Garda is hassle-free, with several transit options available:

Train: Both towns are served by stations on the main Milan-Venice line. Jumping on a train for a quick 10-minute journey is one of the swiftest ways to move between them.

Car: If you’re driving, it’s a brief 10 km trip either along the lakeside or via the A4 motorway, typically taking around 15 minutes.

Bike: Embrace the outdoors by cycling between the two towns. An established path offers a peaceful ride with the lake always by your side.

Bus: While a bit less frequent than the train, local buses do provide connections between the two towns.

Boat or Ferry from Peschiera to Desenzano

Boat: Here’s my top recommendation for you while in Verona and Lake Garda. Embark on a ferry or boat ride across the pristine waters of Lake Garda, travelling from Peschiera to Desenzano.

The journey typically takes between 30 to 50 minutes, offering panoramic views of the lakeside landscapes. With departures approximately every 1 to 2 hours during the peak season, it provides both flexibility and a scenic route. Not only does it promise breathtaking vistas, but the ease of boarding and the joy of the journey itself make it a traveler’s favorite.

Simply head to the Peschiera dock, check the schedule, grab a ticket, and you’re on your way to Desenzano.

When considering the mix of convenience and scenic beauty, the boat ride stands out as a delightful choice.

PRO TIP: If you find the boat or ferry journey from Peschiera to Desenzano to be long, consider taking the train to Desenzano and take the boat or ferry back to Sirmione in the evening. In this way, you still get to appreciate the scenic beauty of the lakeside towns that the route offers.

Explore Desenzano del Garda

Desenzano del Garda is a tapestry of history, leisure, and natural beauty set on the shores of Lake Garda. As you step into this lively town, the historic old port, with boats lazily bobbing, offers a serene welcome. Beyond its vivacious nightlife and sandy beaches, Desenzano is a repository of ancient tales.

The Roman Villa, with its intricate mosaics, is a testament to the town’s rich heritage. This isn’t just a lakeside town; it’s a journey through time. As you meander through its streets, you’ll feel a blend of the old and new, from archaeological wonders to vibrant modern life. And as evening approaches, the town’s pulsating energy beckons, promising a night to remember.

If you have the opportunity, enrich your trip by visiting this sustainable vineyard, a family-run winery near Lake Garda. In just two hours, you’ll embark on a tasting journey, savouring four distinct wines that showcase the unique flavours of the Lugana and Valtenesi regions. It’s not just about the wine; it’s about the story, the family’s passion, and the special touch that makes this experience a standout during your travels.

Day 3 Evening

Rejuvenation at aquaria thermal spa.

As the day winds down, it’s time for some pampering. The Aquaria Thermal SPA promises just that. The local thermal water, known for its therapeutic properties, forms the essence of the treatments here.

If you can, opt for a sunset package—it’s pure bliss to indulge in a spa treatment as the sun paints the sky with shades of orange and pink.

Dinner with a View in Lake Garda

Conclude your day with a delightful dinner. There’s nothing like relishing a scrumptious meal with Lake Garda stretched out before you. I recommend choosing a restaurant in Sirmione for the intimate ambiance and enchanting lake views.

Dinner in Sirmione: La Rucola 2.0 : An evening in Sirmione should culminate in a restaurant like La Rucola 2.0, a Michelin one-star restaurant. Known for its modern take on traditional dishes, you’re in for a treat.

With an elegant setting and a wine list to impress, enjoy dishes made from local and seasonal products. Given its popularity, I’d advise making a reservation in advance to secure a spot with the best lake views. Check Reviews here .

With day 1 packed with such diverse experiences, you’re bound to retire to bed eagerly awaiting the adventures day 2 holds!

Navigating between the interwoven beauty of Verona and Lake Garda, day 4 guides you to discover the northern gems of this stunning lake.

The northern tip always stands out for its sheer dramatic beauty, with mountains that seem to dive straight into the water.

Begin your day with a boat or ferry ride to Riva del Garda. Nestled at the northernmost tip of Lake Garda, this town is a visual masterpiece, cradled amidst spellbinding vistas and framed by towering mountains.

Torbole beckons with its vibrant windsurfing scene. If you’ve ever been fascinated by the dance of sails on water, this is your moment. The consistent winds here have made it a world-renowned windsurfing spot.

Malcesine, Lake Garda

Next, let’s venture to Malcesine, a town that perfectly captures Lake Garda’s essence. Its medieval streets are a delightful maze, leading you to surprises like the Scaligero Castle.

The one thing that you absolutely must not miss is the cable car ride to Monte Baldo. As you ascend, prepare for views that will leave you spellbound – a sweeping panorama of Lake Garda.

Monte Baldo Wine Experience

In Verona and Lake Garda, vineyards are always within arm’s reach, offering a delightful interlude to your journey. Every corner has its unique wine-tasting activity waiting to be discovered.

And if you venture to Monte Baldo, you’ll find yourself indulging in exquisite mountain wines. Given the region’s esteemed reputation for its outstanding Garda wines , this abundance of vineyard experiences is hardly a surprise, showcasing the region’s diverse viticulture.

If you can, join this particular mountain experience and embark on a journey through vineyards overlooking Lake Garda and immerse yourself in the art of winemaking. Discover the intricacies of organic mountain wines, from the Charmat Sparking Extra Brut Method to the aromatic traminer and the robust Pinot Nero 100%.

Conclude your tour in a picturesque tasting room with panoramic views of Lake Garda, indulging in a curated selection of local salami, cheeses, and homemade giardiniera, all paired perfectly with four wines. The Monte Baldo Wine Experience is unique and will surely stay timeless.

Day 4 Evening

Journey back to sirmione.

As the day winds down, make your way back to the tranquil shores of Sirmione. The setting sun bathes the peninsula in a golden hue, transforming it into an ethereal haven.

Dinner: A Farewell Feast

On your final night of Verona and Lake Garda vacation, let Lake Garda serenade you.

Relais La Speranzina in Sirmione beckons with its promise of a gourmet dining experience.

Situated right at the water’s edge, this gourmet restaurant in Sirmione is celebrated for its sophisticated blend of traditional and contemporary Italian gastronomy. With each dish artfully presented, La Speranzina’s culinary offerings mirror the surrounding beauty of Lake Garda. The exquisite wine list is a testament to the region’s vinicultural prowess, ensuring each course is paired perfectly.

Immerse yourself in dishes that weave traditional Italian flavours with modern twists, each plate represents the region’s rich culinary heritage.

Post Dinner

After dinner, I suggest a leisurely walk. With stars overhead and the gentle lapping of the lake’s waves, take a moment to truly cherish the memories and magic this vacation has bestowed upon you. It’s a fitting tribute to a journey through Verona and Lake Garda that you’ll hold close to your heart.

PRO TIP: Consider an Alternate Stay: While Sirmione is captivating, if you’re thinking of prolonging your Lake Garda experience, ⭐ Lefay Resort & SPA in Gargnano is a great place to stay at. This lovely resort is tucked away amidst the rolling hills, a sanctuary that specializes in treatments that harness the essence of Lake Garda’s pristine nature.

Important TIPs to Exploring Lake Garda

A strategic approach to exploring Lake Garda is to start from the northernmost town, Riva del Garda, and gradually work your way south. Why, you ask?

Riva del Garda, cradled by majestic mountains, offers a distinct alpine ambiance that’s drastically different from the southern towns. By starting here, you’re diving right into Lake Garda’s dramatic contrasts.

As you journey south, you’ll ease into the milder, Mediterranean atmosphere of the lake’s southern shores. This also optimizes your travel time, ensuring you’re moving in one direction without backtracking.

Plus, by the afternoon, as towns get busier, you’re exploring smaller locales closer to your Sirmione base, making your return journey shorter and simpler.

Each town has been handpicked for its unique charm:

Riva del Garda: Its medieval lanes and panoramic views from Tower Apponale perfectly capture the majesty of Verona and Lake Garda’s intersection.

Torbole: A stone’s throw from Riva, it’s a windsurfing paradise with a vibrant energy.

Malcesine: Its medieval essence and the majestic Scaligero Castle make it special. The cable car journey to Monte Baldo is an experience that offers unparalleled views of the lake.

I hope that you’ll find this itinerary not only showcases Lake Garda’s diverse beauty but also maximizes convenience and minimizes travel fatigue.

People Also Ask about Verona and Lake Garda

Is it possible to take a day trip from verona to lake garda.

Yes, a day trip from Verona to Lake Garda is feasible and popular. Certainly! Direct trains connect Verona with Lake Garda, reaching towns like Peschiera and Desenzano in about 15-30 minutes. It’s a convenient mode of transport, allowing travelers to easily explore the lake’s scenic beauty and attractions.

Which is more captivating, Verona or Lake Garda?

Verona is a historical gem with Shakespearean allure and remarkable architecture. In contrast, Lake Garda, though sprinkled with small towns, promises a vast array of activities set against stunning landscapes. These towns, while quaint, offer a wealth of diverse experiences, making both destinations uniquely appealing in their own right.

Which region of Lake Garda is the most picturesque?

Every part of Lake Garda boasts its own unique charm. The northern areas, like Riva and Torbole, are framed by dramatic mountains, while the southern shores offer softer landscapes and historical towns.

The towns around the lake are generally peaceful, welcoming, and cater well to visitors.

Lake Garda, with its diverse landscapes, offers numerous trekking, excursions, and walking opportunities for enthusiasts. While it’s not feasible to walk around the entire lake due to its vast size, there are several beautiful routes that showcase the lake’s natural beauty, from mountain treks to scenic hillside paths and tranquil plains walks.

Full Itinerary

Day 1: fly to italy.

Fly from the UK to Italy, meet your Tour Manager at the airport, board the coach and travel to Lake Garda and your chosen hotel. Stay on the lake’s eastern shore, close to delightful Malcesine, with its quaint alleyways and narrow streets, or close to sun-blessed Torbole and its vibrant café life, shops and stunning views across the lake. Alternatively choose Riva at the top of the lake, or Limone on the North West shoreline. Settle in to your surroundings, and enjoy a first evening at your hotel.

Day 2: Day at leisure

Today you're free to rest and relax. Enjoy the facilities at your hotel, or perhaps venture into the centre of your chosen resort. All the resorts we use have been favourites with our customers for many years, and each has a lot to offer. Stroll the lakeside promenade, watch the world go by from a seat in a pavement café, shop, or perhaps even take to the water – Garda is a favourite of sailors and windsurfers who revel in the breezy conditions offshore.

Day 3: Included Grand Circular Lake Garda Tour

After breakfast, today, board the coach to begin a Grand Circular Tour of this beautiful lake in the company of your tour manager. The fjord-like eastern shores and the northern, mountain backed resorts of sun-blessed Torbole and pastel-painted Riva del Garda give way to a western shoreline of citrus and olive groves. On the southern shore a promontory leads to the spa resort of Sirmione, with its healing waters and fairy-tale Rocca Scaligera castle. The tour will also visit the wine-growing town of Bardolino, and the busy resort of Garda itself, on the way back to your hotel.

Day 4: Included Dolomites scenery tour

Today is spent exploring the crags and passes of the majestic Dolomites, which lie to the north of Lake Garda, and provide some of Europe’s most dramatic mountain scenery.

Visit towering Marmolada and Canazei in the mountain's shadow, Val Rendena, the huge Adamello Glacier, the Brenta Dolomites and pretty Val di Genova. Soak up the atmosphere and stunning views as you stop at some of the traditional towns and villages of this delightful region, which sits between the sun-kissed Italian plain of Emiglia-Romagna and the Alps of the Austrian Tyrol, above the wine-growing valley of the Alto-Adige.

Day 5: Day at leisure

Spend a day relaxing at your hotel and in the resort. Revisit your favourite cafe, relax at the water's edge or explore further afield.

Day 6: Included Verona excursion

Today you’ll visit the thoroughly charming city of Verona, on the banks of the River Adige. The city's historic centre and monuments fashioned in pink marble draw visitors from all over the world. And among its outstanding sights you'll find the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in Italy, famed the world over for its summertime opera festival. The sweeping Piazza Bra is crowded with people watching the world go by from a seat in one of the many pavement cafés, the colourful market on ancient Piazza delle Erbe bustles with life, while nearby the maze of 13th-century streets is redolent with a sense of troubled history, chronicled in Shakespeare’s tale of star-crossed lovers.

After another marvellous day you’ll return to Garda’s shores.

Day 7: Included Venice excursion

Today's visit to Venice, probably the world’s most romantic city, will etch itself into your memory like few others. Board the coach and travel through the Veneto to the city. On arrival, you'll take a walking tour of this simply breathtakingly beautiful place in the company of a local guide. The 100 or so islands that make up the city are linked by innumerable bridges, and gondolas and water taxis ply their trades on the beautiful Grand Canal, past the stunning Accademia museum and beneath the Rialto Bridge.

The vast expanse of St Mark's Square, with its sumptuous cathedral, clock tower and the Doge's Palace – the Palazzo Ducale – is one of the world’s great sights. Close by, joining the palace to the prisons, the famous Bridge of Sighs is said to have afforded condemned men a last view of the beauty of Venice en route to the gallows.

Away from St Marks and the Grand Canal, a labyrinth of narrow streets waits to be explored, each new corner revealing another memorable view of this wonderful city. After an unforgettable day you'll return to Lake Garda in time for a last dinner at your hotel.

Day 8: Fly back to the UK

Say "Arrivederci, Lago di Garda", today, as you board the coach and the transfer back to the airport to catch your flight home.

7+ Splendid Things to Do in Sirmione, The Pearl of Lake Garda

Located on an extremely narrow peninsula that juts into the southern tip of Lake Garda, the resort town of Sirmione is undoubtedly best known for its castle on the water–but there are several cool things to do in Sirmione!

Bite-sized, walkable, and with a historic center lined on either side by lake views, Sirmione is enduringly popular for good reason.

We had Sirmione marked on our “places to eventually visit in Italy” list for years before we had a chance to go, and we had a wonderful visit–though not everything was exactly as we expected.

If you’re planning a trip to Sirmione, here’s everything you need to know before you go!

Visit the striking Castello Scaligero di Sirmione.

Who needs a normal moat when you have the entirety of Lake Garda to protect you?

You truly can’t miss the Castello Scaligero di Sirmione (sometimes called Sirmione Castle to keep things simple). It’s essentially the first thing you see as you cross the small drawbridge into the historic center!

Perched right on the shores of the lake, Sirmione Castle dates to the 14th century and was built by the powerful Della Scala family of Verona.

Today, the castle is best known for its striking appearance–a portion of the lake is walled off within its bounds–and its beautiful views.

The castle walls, which you can climb along during your visit, overlook the Sirmione Peninsula and offer the best viewpoint in town.

Visiting the castle is a must-do in Sirmione!

Take a boat tour to appreciate Sirimione from the water.

Inexpensive boat tours that circle the Sirmione Peninsula run constantly–and jumping on one is easily one of the best things to do in Sirmione.

With a low time commitment, you can admire the best of Sirmione from the water, while also appreciating the splendid setting of Lake Garda itself.

If you’re visiting Sirmione during a particularly crowded time or are tied to a specific schedule, you can book your boat tour in advance .

If your schedule is flexible, though, you can also just walk up and ask what the next boat available is (we waited less than 2 hours for ours).

Prefer something a bit more luxurious? This private sunset cruise is a memorable option!

Wander through Grotte di Catullo, Sirmione’s Roman ruins.

To step a whopping 2000+ years back in history, make your way to the very tip of the peninsula, where you’ll find the Grotte di Catullo (or “Grottoes of Catullus”).

As it turns out, this villa was neither a grotto nor had anything to do with the poet Catullus, but the ruins provide a memorable stop in Sirmione.

Originally an aristocrat’s villa, the building was later repurposed several times, eventually serving in a defensive capacity and now, a touristic one!

The views are just as remarkable as you might expect given that the location for the home was chosen by a wealthy aristocrat.

And, as a bonus, Grotte di Catullo is generally less crowded than Sirmione’s historic center, as it requires a bit of a walk to get to (20-25 minutes from the castle, depending on how much you stop along the way).

We visited near closing time at sunset, and had the place almost entirely to ourselves!

Relax on the beach.

Sirmione is lined with beaches and lidos (Italian beach clubs, a staple of Italian summers wherever there is water to enjoy), and no matter where you are on the peninsula, you’re never more than a short walk from a place to put your feet in the water.

Jamaica Beach, located at the end of the peninsula and featuring superb views over Lake Garda, is undoubtedly the most famous, and well worth visiting.

Spiaggia Lido del Bionde is also popular, and the smaller Spiaggia del Prete, located on the east side of town, is a laid-back stop.

Ultimately, Sirmione is such a small place that it’s hard to go wrong when choosing a beach… and it’s not much of a commitment to do so, as they’re all within walking distance of each other!

Stroll along the promenade.

Want to enjoy incredible Lake Garda views without committing to either a beach visit or a boat tour?

If so, strolling Sirmione’s promenade may be perfect for you!

And, while the promenade offers beautiful views during the day, it’s lovely after dinner with a cool evening breeze, too.

Pay a visit to the Church of San Pietro in Mavino.

Dating back to the 8th century and featuring frescoes that were painted as early as the 14th century, the quiet and peaceful Church of San Pietro in Mavino is a lovely escape from the bustle of Sirmione’s historic center.

Located on the northern part of the peninsula, not far from Grotte di Catullo, Sirmione’s oldest church is a quick and worthwhile stop when seeking out the best things to do in Sirmione.

Soak in Sirimione’s thermal springs.

Sirmione is famous for its spas, and especially for its thermal springs!

In the historic center, the Terme di Catullo and Aquaria Thermal Spa are among the most famous spas in town.

Several hotels in town, including Hotel Sirmione , also offer on-site thermal spas.

Enjoy meandering through Sirmione’s historic center.

Sirmione’s historic center is small, but lovely, offering a compact area of narrow streets packed with restaurants, shops, cafes, minor attractions like the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, and scenic spots like the view overlooking the lake at the edge of Piazza Porto Valentino.

The historic center–and its notable crowds–are densest right past the Castello Scaligero.

As you continue north, the historic center quickly ends, replaced by a (slightly) wider section of the peninsula that offers more spread-out hotels, beaches, and attractions.

The crowds thin out along with the buildings, so if you’re overwhelmed by the historic center, you won’t have to travel far to leave it!

We loved our stay at Hotel Meridiana in Sirmione!

The room was lovely, the roof deck offered beautiful views, the service was excellent, and the breakfast leaned heavily toward homemade cakes, which is always a delight when on vacation in Italy.

Hotel Meridiana also offers on-site parking, which was very helpful as we were visiting as part of a road trip and, as you can see in other places in this post, parking in Sirmione can be a bit of a hassle.

Other popular options include Hotel Sirmione , which features an on-site thermal spa, and Hotel Casa Scaligeri , which offers recently renovated, modern rooms in the absolute heart of Sirmione.

All the hotels mentioned here get excellent reviews and are located within walking distance of the best things to do in Sirmione.

Yes, you absolutely can take a day trip to Sirmione!

Verona is by far the closest major Italian city to Sirmione, and you can reach the town in under an hour from there by car.

However, many cities in northern Italy, including Milan, Venice , Parma , Padua, Ferrara, Bologna , Brescia, and Bergamo, are close enough to Sirmione that a day trip is possible, especially if you travel by car and plan your day well (in other words, assuming you get started early in the morning).

Renting a car for the day will also allow you to enjoy other stops along the way, including potentially some beautiful views of Lake Garda, depending on your route.

While you can reach Sirmione by a combination of train and bus (more on that in a section below), there is no train station directly in Sirmione.

It’s still a doable day trip by public transportation from many destinations, but not the simplest one available.

Alternatively, guided tours are popular options for visiting Sirmione from Verona and Milan.

This well-reviewed day trip from Verona includes a boat cruise and additional scenic stops along Lake Garda, and this day trip from Milan includes a stop in Verona, as well as a boat cruise and a visit to Sirmione.

The top attractions in Sirmione itself can easily be enjoyed in a day to a day and a half, depending on how much time you want to spend on the beaches and/or in the thermal spas.

If you want to enjoy a more leisurely pace that includes plenty of time at the beaches and soaking in the thermal spas, plus possibly a day trip to another destination or two on Lake Garda (like beautiful Isola del Garda, for instance), you can easily fill 2-3 days sightseeing in Sirmione.

Sirmione itself is extremely walkable. Whether you’re visiting on a day trip or staying for a few days like we did, you’ll want to park your car upon arrival and not touch it again until you leave town.

(If you’re not staying at a hotel that offers parking, we recommend consulting the official Sirmione parking page before arriving–more on that below).

When it comes to getting around Lake Garda itself, you have a few options.

You can either drive, take the bus, take the bus to a bigger ferry station or a train station (there’s no train station in Sirmione itself, you’ll need to head to nearby Desenzano del Garda or Peschiera del Garda), or take the ferry .

If you’re hoping to visit more of the scenic towns along Lake Garda itself, like Limone sul Garda, Garda, Malcesine, and Riva del Garda, the ferry is undoubtedly the most scenic option–but driving is generally significantly faster, partially because most ferry routes connect through nearby towns like Desenzano del Garda.

Expect resort-town vibes when visiting Sirmione.

Sirmione is a beautiful place that is close to Milan and Verona, surrounded by a stunning landscape, and prominently features a historic castle right on the water.

… So it’s no surprise that it’s incredibly popular!

While we loved our visit to Sirmione, there’s no doubt that it feels a bit more like a resort that happens to be housed in an Italian town than an actual, real-life functioning town at times, especially in the heart of the historic center.

This is similar to places like Bellagio and Positano, which are two other waterfront towns in Italy that, like Sirmione, are certainly worth enjoying, but feel entirely consumed by their tourism industries.

Watch out for overly touristy gelato.

This goes a bit hand-in-hand with the advice above, but after visiting well over a hundred Italian cities, towns, and hamlets, I have to say that we have never seen as over-the-top gigantic portions of touristy gelato as we did in Sirmione, and it wasn’t exactly a bargain, either!

As a general rule, for delicious, authentic gelato, look for gelato enclosed in its metal tub (so nothing mounded over the top), with muted colors (pistachio should be brown-ish, not lime colored).

Now, if you just want to enjoy a frozen treat at the nearest spot, have at it–but if you’re a foodie looking for traditional Italian gelato, tread carefully in Sirmione.

If you want to avoid the worst of the crowds, spend the night!

Like many other popular day trip destinations with a small footprint, Sirmione gets positively overrun with day-trippers during the high season.

If you want to experience a more laid-back version of the town, though, you easily can by simply spending the night!

Once the day-trippers head back to their base cities, you’ll see a much more relaxed side of Sirmione.

We took full advantage of the lack of day-trippers in the early evenings during our visit and enjoyed plenty of benefits, including having the Grotte di Catullo almost entirely to ourselves at sunset.

Another option?

If you aren’t invested in actually swimming in Lake Garda during your trip, visiting Sirmione in the winter is a great way to make the most of the thermal spas and extra elbow room, though be prepared for some hotels and restaurants to be closed for the season.

collection of arches part of grotte di catullo sirmione near sunset

Don’t expect to drive into the historic center (and make parking plans in advance).

Unless you’re staying in a hotel on the peninsula that offers parking ( Hotel Meridiana is one of these, though I will say driving through Sirmione’s historic center was not exactly fun), you’ll need to park your car before crossing the drawbridge at Castello Scaligero that marks the entrance to the historic center.

There are many parking lots in the area designed to accommodate visitors, starting just past the drawbridge and edging steadily further away from the historic center.

We recommend consulting the official Sirmione parking page for the most up-to-date information and arriving prepared to both be flexible and to do a bit of walking as you start your visit.

collection of cars parked in the hotel meridiana parking lot

If you’re driving to Sirmione for a day trip, arrive as early as possible!

This goes hand-in-hand with the advice above, but if you’re taking an independent day trip to Sirmione, arriving as early as possible will help your day go smoothly!

In a destination where parking is competitive and busloads of tourists are dropping off each morning, an early start is a big advantage.

Sirmione Castle opens at 8:30 AM most days (it’s closed on Mondays).
