Best of Skye Tour from Portree

Best of Skye Tour from Portree

This journey will take you to all the main attractions on the mystical Isle of Skye: Fairy Pools, Old Man of Storr, Quiraing, Talisker Distillery and much more.

scotland skye island tour

Fairy Pools

We start on our journey with a drive to the Fairy Pools in the shadow of the Cuillin Mountains. The Pools are located in one of the most dramatic landscapes on Skye. The fairies regularly bathe here, in the crystal clear green pools of the River Brittle. Weather permitting, you can swim in the pools of the river, one of the UK’s best wild swimming spots. Have fun diving under natural arches and waterfalls, but please do not spy on the fairies, as they can easily take offense!

We in no way endorse swimming in the pools and it is done entirely at your own risk .

Talisker Distillery

Talisker distillery based in Carbost is one of the three whisky distillery on the Isle of Skye, the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye. Set on the shores of Loch Harport with dramatic views of the Cuillin mountains. Producing an alluring, sweet, full-bodied single malt is so easy to enjoy, and like Skye itself, so hard to leave. We shall go through the visitor centre (not on the tour) and if available sample one of the fine whiskys produced here.

Neist Point

You have a choice of either going to Neist Point or being dropped off at Dunvegan Castle and we will pick you up on the way back from Neist Point.

We travel to the far west of the island to the dramatic Neist Point. This is the best place on the island to spot whales, dolphins and sharks. Here we transport you to the edge of the world, with its beautiful scenery, awesome skies and endless ocean. Come with us and see for yourself why Skye has been voted by National Geographic as the fourth greatest island visitor experience in the whole world!

Dunvegan Castle

You have a choice of either visiting Dunvegan Castle or visit Neist Point.

Visit the ancient MacLeod clan castle set in beautiful gardens, Dunvegan Castle is the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland and has been the ancestral home of the Chiefs of clan MacLeod for 800 years, see the flag from Fairyland which is dated between the 4th and 7th centuries A.D. (The entrance fee to Dunvegan Castle is not included).

This is the most important meeting place of the fairies on Skye. Wander between countless conical mounds, known in the Highlands as fairy knowes; put your ears to the grass and listen for the fairies at work inside.  Bend down to search for elves in the glen’s miniature forests, take the twisted path to the top of the fairy castle or walk the faun’s maze and have a wish granted!

The Quiraing

We take the opportunity to drive right up to the Trotternish ridge at the Quiraing, lying in the far North of Skye.

The Quiraing is a landscape used in many sci-fi films, known for its wonderful rock formations and stunning coastal views. This is a place like no other, part of the largest landslip in Europe. Come to the cliff edge with us and see it for yourself!

Kilt Rock with the distinctive pillars and beautiful waterfall with views across to the Torridon hills on the mainland, this weird landscape is used as a film location for many Sci-Fi movies, and is known for it’s amazing rock formations.

Home to the dinosaurs of Skye’s ancient past and home to the most traditional people on the Isle of Skye. Only here will you experience stunning vistas, swirling mists and shifting suns around you.

Jurassic Skye

The Trotternish coastline is the most famous on Skye. It dates from the Mid-Jurassic period, formed 175 million years ago and is the dinosaur stamping ground of Scotland. The beaches are rich in fossils, the rocks are ancient and twisted. The whole coastline has been designated as an outdoor museum. Interpretation panels bring the area to life, explaining the unique geology of this land. As part of the tour we will visit the dino museum has an internationally important collection of dinosaur fossils: here you can see their footprints embedded in stone, taken from the local beaches.

The Old Man of Storr

The Old Man of Storr is one of the iconic natural features of the dramatic Trotternish Ridge.

The ridge is a mighty inland cliff, the longest in the UK, rising to a height of 720m. This amazing landscape should be part of any tour to the island and has made Trotternish the most popular visitor destination on Skye.

The Old Man is a 200ft stone pillar, which has detached itself from the highest point of the ridge, creating a fantastical landscape of twisted rocks, looming shadows and swirling mists, film location for among others the Ridley Scott 2012 directed science fiction film Prometheus.

We will be taking a lunch break and there will always be a cafe or shops for you to buy lunch or just bring a packed lunch. Please bring cash, as some places do not accept cards.

Pickup and Drop Off : Portree – Bus Stop in Somerled Square, IV51 9EH: 08.45am > Returning around 6:00pm

Please be there 15 minutes prior to departure. We are unable to wait for latecomers so please ensure that you are on time.

At 639 square miles (1,656 square kilometres), the Isle of Skye is the second-largest Island in Scotland after Lewis and Harris and boasts some of the most dramatic mountain and coastal scenery in the UK. The Island has been occupied since the Mesolithic period (7th millennium BC) by, variously, Celtic tribes including the Picts and the Gaels, Scandinavian Vikings and the powerful Norse-Gael clans of MacLeod and MacDonald.

Skye belonged to Norway until the Perth Treaty of 1266 transferred sovereignty to Scotland. Thereafter, the 18th-century Jacobite uprisings led to the breaking-up of the clan system and the subsequent ‘Clearances’ replaced entire communities with sheep farms. This involved forced emigrations to distant lands. Resident numbers declined from over 20,000 in the early 19th century to just under 9,000 by 1999. Today the population hovers around 10,000. The ancient Gaelic language is still spoken throughout the Island and all road signs are bilingual. The main industries are tourism, agriculture, fishing and whisky-distilling. The climate is mild, wet and windy - but when the sun shines, there is nowhere more beautiful on Earth. The abundant wildlife includes Golden Eagles, Sea Eagles and Red Deer.

Storr

Our Skye Tour Route

A massive rock pinnacle that dominates the views, the remnants of ancient landslips. This unique landscape has been used as a location for several films.

The Quiraing

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

1 to 3 people

(price per private group), 4 to 7 people, tour scotland’s isle of skye.

This day-long excursion takes us via Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, beautiful Glenmoriston and onward through historic Kintail, the scene of a Jacobite battle.

Past the Five Sisters Peaks and down into Lochalsh, we are soon “over the sea to Skye,” pausing for a photograph of Eilean Donan Castle and Loch Duich.

Eilein a Cheò (Skye) is in itself a microcosm of all things Highland and indeed Scottish.

On this one stretch of beautiful landscape, over 50 miles long but never more than a few miles wide, there can be found the modern-day and ancestral homes of two of the great Clans of Scotland, The MacDonalds at Armadale and the MacLeods of Dunvegan.

Here too is the scene of a British Naval frigate with over 400 marines being sent to put down resistance by crofters. The marines were on the island for some six months following the Battle of the Braes near Portree, where during the Highland Clearances, 50 police dispatched from Glasgow to evict the people from their homes were challenged and seen off, mainly by the womenfolk.

Unique in political history, this island and the neighboring western seaboard returned four members of parliament to Westminster in 1885.

They had no party affiliation other than they were all from the crofting community. Their determined collective spirit won them the protection of the Crofting Land Act in 1886.

Some of the oldest mountains in the world, the Black Cuillins are here, created by violent volcanic eruption millions of years ago. The lochs, in turn, a by-product of the melting glacial bergs from the Ice Age.

“Talisker,” the island’s famous malt whisky, is distilled at Carbost. We take a different route home over the Auchtertyre Brae with its panoramic views into Strathcarron down into Achnasheen, Garve, and the Kessock Bridge.

How can I book accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the price of your tour. To book accommodation, there are two options: either Rabbie’s Tours can book it for you, or you can book your own. For information on how to do this, please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab on FAQ page HERE .

Alternatively, please email us your questions at [email protected] or call us on +44(0)131 226 3133.

Information you can find on the FAQ page, under the ‘Accommodation’ tab : types of accommodation, room types, the booking process, getting to and from your accommodation, and cancellation terms.

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Breakfast will be included unless otherwise noted. The type of breakfast provided will vary from place to place so you may receive either a full cooked breakfast, a continental style breakfast (E.g., toast, fruit, cereal), or a packed breakfast bag or tray (E.g., porridge pot, fruit, granola bar).

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

I have more questions, who can help me?

22/03/23 – Helen and Whitney-May

This was just the most wonderful experience and I would like to commend you and Jerry (our tour guide) on what will likely be the absolute highlight of our trip to the UK (we still have a little while here but you’re going to be hard to beat!) A million thank you’s for this experience. It was all round amazing, from every annoying enquiry I sent last minute to the office, through to the on-the-ground offering. The carefully researched commentary, lovely bus, caring on time guest service levels provided by Jerry and well, the scenery -though not your making :) –  was next level heavenly. I cannot recommend your tour more highly! Warm regards.

17/03/23 – Taylor

We LOVED our tour with Discover Scotland! Our guide Michael was amazing we could not have ask for anyone better. We enjoyed our whole trip from the bus rides hearing stories, history, songs and much more about Scotland, to our quick picture stops, all our longer spots where we had time to explore, and our free time in Kyleakin.  We felt like our interests were heard by our guide and we were given options and suggestions to do things we would enjoy.  The only thing we wished we could change was staying longer. We are very thankful for our guide and discover scotland for everything. Thanks for everything

02 /11/ 22 – Sergio

I had a wonderful time with Discover Scotland Tours. We had an amazing tour guide also our driver named Jerry! The tour had plenty of photographic stops from day 1. Driving through the Highlands into the Isle of Skye and to Loch ness the group and I could feel the magic Scottish atmosphere. Thank you Jerry for taking care of every single one of us and thank you Discover Scotland Tours for this fantastic experience.

10/10/22 – Vanessa

We had an amazing time! John our guide was perfect! I can’t say enough good things about him! He obviously loves his job and the island.  I appreciated how you kept in touch with me leading up to the tour and how responsive and clearly  you answered my questions. I will most definitely recommend John Black and your company to everyone willing to hear me go on about what an amazing experience we had. Thank you for everything and with some luck we will be making more plans with your company.

19/08/22 – Kylie + Corbin

Our 3-day Isle of Skye tour with Scott was unforgettable! Despite road closures to start the trip, Scott maintained positivity that radiated throughout the group. Each day brought adventure and memories that we will always cherish. It’s easy to see that Scott loves people and Scotland as he went out of his way to make sure everyone got to see and do what they set out to. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and guide!

02/08/22 – Angelina

My friends and I recently went on the Isle of Skye, Highlands, and Loch Ness 3-day tour from Edinburgh, and it was the highlight of our vacation! Our tour guide, John Black, was quite the character. Throughout the whole trip, he was super cheery and always cracking jokes. His personal anecdotes, vast knowledge, and captivating story-telling provided us with a unique glimpse into the Scottish people, culture, and history. John was extremely accommodating for everyone on the tour, making frequent stops for bathroom breaks and food throughout the day. The bus itself was very comfortable, with AC and plenty of space for everyone, and had great views no matter where one sat. Our accommodation was booked through Discover Scotland as well, at Winklebeech bnb in Kyleakin. It had a quaint and homey vibe, and the owner was super welcoming. She was also extremely accommodating to our dietary restrictions and even offered us some bug spray after seeing all of our midge bites! The rooms were tidy and comfortable, with all the necessities one may need. We managed to hit all the destinations on the tour, and it ran very smoothly with no delays. We were especially in awe with the Isle of Skye- It’s a must-see for everyone who visits Scotland! Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend Discover Scotland Tours and would visit again in a heartbeat!

28 /07/22 – Roxanne

We had a wonderful time and it was through this tour that Scotland came alive for us. Our Tour Leader made a point of getting to know each of us. In between the gorgeous countryside and  the historical background Michael provided, he played songs told amusing stories and made it us feel like we were all part of one family. There were lots of stops for the bathroom and food as well. He was patient answering all of our questions and was respectful of the country’s we came from. We loved this tour and will be talking about it for quite some time. Also good value for our money.

11/07/22 – Darryl

We were very happy with our three day tour. This being our first, and probably only trip to Scotland, we appreciated the variety of things we saw and the general information about your country.

We were especially impressed with our tour guide, John Sheedy. In addition to being an all-around nice guy, he was very attentive to everyone’s needs and well prepared with interesting stories. Having grown up on the isle of Skye was a bonus. John conveyed his genuine love and pride of Scotland and made our trip fun and comfortable.

01/07/22 – Jessica

Mark and I had THE BEST weekend. It’s my first time in Scotland, and although it was a whirlwind, I’m excited to get back and spend more time in certain places. Accommodation was great, Garry was FANTASTIC. So warm and bubbly and knowledgeable and fun.  We’re both quite introverted and I was overwhelmed and missing my children and we never once felt pressured or intruded on, but also Garry made us both feel so seen and included, I was so grateful for how he handled us. Lots of stops, would be good to have a bit more time in some places, but I also really liked ticking lots of things off my list. It was also really relaxing, I slept on the bus all the time – as a parent it was just so lovely to not have to worry about ANYTHING.  Garry added a few fun things in that I wasn’t expecting which was so great! Lots of Harry Potter stops! A DINOSAUR FOOTPRINT! I just loved every minute.  I would do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you add some northern Scotland tours! Let me know if you do.

10/06/22 – Gráinne

My tour was the Isle of Skye, the Highlands & Loch Ness 3 day tour with Gary. The itinerary was great. Loved all the stops. Loads of time at each stop , didn’t feel rushed. Our tour guide, Gary, was fantastic. He had loads of fun facts and quips and kept us all motivated even though the weather was against us. Will definitely recommend Gary and the tour to anyone!

Where does the tour stay overnight?

Situated on the east coast of Skye is the fishing village of Kyleakin and this is where we stay for both nights of our tour. During peak season some of our passengers may be allocated accommodation in the villages nearby to Kyleakin.

Full Tour Itinerary

Select Day:

Day 1 - Edinburgh/Glasgow - Glen Coe - Inverness

Departing Edinburgh and Glasgow, our journey together starts as we make our way into the natural beauty of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park .

As our coach ascends the “Black Mount”, there are fantastic views of Loch Tulla below.

Soon we are amidst the remote beauty of Rannoch Moor. This unspoilt landscape extends over 50 square miles and is one of the great wildernesses of Europe!

Spectacular and moody - Glen Coe is quite simply incredible! We will make a photo stop in Scotland’s most famous glen. No matter the weather, you are sure to be inspired by this extraordinary place.

Fort William enjoys a scenic location overlooking the banks of Loch Linnhe. After a stop for lunch, our next treat, hopefully, will be beautiful views of Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain.

The Great Glen provides an impressive landscape of lochs and mountains formed millions of years ago. Sit back and marvel at the scenic backdrop as we travel along the banks of Loch Lochy and Oich.

In the village of Invergarry, watch out for the “Well of the Seven Heads”, a monument with a very gory tale to tell!

It’s a short drive to Inverness , the Capital of the Highlands, for our home for the next two nights.

Overnight: Inverness (2 nights)

Day 2 - Isle of Skye Excursion

There's an exciting day ahead as we head to the beautiful Isle of Skye.

Glen Shiel is home to the " Five Sisters of Kintail ", a range of five mountains whose impressive peaks tower over 3,000 feet high.

Soon picturesque Eilean Donan Castle will come into view. This is, without doubt, one of Scotland's most iconic sights. The castle stands on a little island situated at the confluence of Loch's Alsh and Duich. We'll have time to discover the castle for ourselves during our stop here.

Soon we travel "over the sea to Skye" by the modern road bridge and start our exploration of this picturesque island.

The towering Cuillin Hills give Skye its breathtaking beauty. Many consider these to be amongst the finest hills in Britain. The Cuillins present a simply unforgettable vista.

The picturesque town of Portree , the island's largest community. The town's name means the "King's Port" following a visit by King James V in 1540. The pretty painted houses surrounding the harbour give Portree instant Instagramable appeal.

The magnificent rock scenery and breathtaking views of the extraordinary Trotternish Peninsula make it a must-see on our tour.

We'll explore the Quiraing, an area of weird and mysterious rock formations, including the best-known one, Kilt Rock, which resembles the pleats of Scotland's famous garment.

Head to the viewing platform to watch the Mealt Falls cascade 100 m (328 ft) into the sea below.

Our last stop will be the Old Man of Storr, an impressive pinnacle of rock surrounded by legend. It has an arresting location dominating the landscape and towering over the Sound of Raasay.

Later we bid farewell to Skye as we return to our accommodation in Inverness.

Day 3 - Inverness - Culloden Moor - Edinburgh/Glasgow

After a relaxed breakfast, we make the short journey to reach moody Loch Ness, where you'll have the chance to enjoy a monster-spotting cruise to view the ruins of Urquhart Castle .

On the outskirts of Inverness lies emotive Culloden Moor . It was here in 1746 that Bonnie Prince Charlie's dreams of capturing the Crown for the Stuart dynasty came to a bloody end.

The battle lasted less than an hour, and his Jacobite army was crushed. The aftermath was particularly brutal, and Highland culture changed forever.

The next part of our journey takes us through the Cairngorms National Park . We'll pass the remote village of Dalwhinnie, then descend through the Drumochter Pass, which has linked the Highlands to the Lowlands since the earliest of times.

Nestling amongst spectacular scenery and overlooked by Ben-y-Vrackie mountain, the pretty Highland Perthshire town of Pitlochry has attracted visitors since the days of Queen Victoria . You're sure to be enthralled by its charm during our stop.

From Perth, we'll make our way through the ancient Kingdom of Fife and then across the River Forth to reach Edinburgh

If you boarded the tour in Glasgow, the coach will stop at Edinburgh Waverley Station. Here you catch the express train back to Glasgow. The train operates every 30 minutes, and the journey is around 50 minutes. The fare is included in the cost of the tour.

Please note: For operational reasons, the tour may operate in reverse.

Your Full Edinburgh to Isle of Skye Tour Itinerary

Departing edinburgh to isle of skye.

We will be departing from the bustle of Edinburgh to start this classic tour.

Leaving Edinburgh, we will be travelling north west on the motorway (freeway) and will soon arrive at a quieter area as we reach the outskirts of Stirling.

First Stop – Callander and Refreshments

It’s then onto the picturesque town of Callander, situated on the banks of the River Teith in the heart of the Trossachs. We will have time here to stop for refreshments and facilities.

As we continue north, the glorious mountains and tranquil lochs will provide us with a dramatic backdrop on our journey to Glencoe, one of the highlights of our Edinburgh to Isle of Skye tour.

The Beauty of Glencoe

This is probably one of the most well known of Scotland’s glens with an important story to tell. This narrow valley is also where the bloody massacre of the Macdonalds took place in 1692.

Our guides will be able to enlighten you with tales from this part of the country and why it will never be forgotten.

We will have time to stop at the Glencoe National Nature Reserve Visitor Centre and enjoy some panoramic views whilst refuelling on some tasty food at the café.

Onward to Fort William and Ben Nevis, and Harry Potter Country

In the afternoon, we will travel further north west, passing by Fort William. During this section of the journey we should be able to catch sight of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain.

From there we will be following the Road to the Isles, which will lead us on to the town of Mallaig.

On the way we will visit the Glenfinnan Viaduct where the Hogwarts Express train thundered over the bridge in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets film. It also features on subsequent Harry Potter films, The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet of Fire.

Mallaig to Isle of Skye

As we arrive at Mallaig, we will get ready to take the ferry* leading us over the sea to Armadale on the Isle of Skye.

When we reach the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh, we will be travelling to the town of Portree and taking you on to your selected accommodation.

*Please note there’s a £10 supplement per person for ferry crossing. This is a seasonal ferry and subject to timetable variations. Alternative routes may be taken.

Exploring the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh

This is an entire day dedicated to exploring the Isle of Skye.

Our day begins with a scenic journey alongside the dramatic Trotternish Ridge* and includes stops at the Old Man of Storr and Kilt Rock.

After a walk at the Quiraing, amongst the unique and unusual rock architecture, we drive on to reach the magic of Fairy Glen. It’s a delightful miniature Highland landscape and legendary home of the ‘wee people’.

Next we drive to the most westerly point on Skye and walk to Neist Point lighthouse. From here we will have marvellous views over the ocean to the Outer Hebrides.

Our final stop of the day will be to visit and walk beside the crystal clear water of the magical Fairy Pools. You will have impressive views of the Black Cuillins from this area.

This is a beautiful spot to take some fantastic pictures to show your friends, or even dip your toes in the water if you’re brave enough.

We return to Portree in the early evening where you can select from one of the local dining options for food and refreshment before returning to your accommodation.

*On our Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh, we will visit all of the areas listed, but not necessarily in this order, allowing for weather advantages on the day.

Isle of Skye from Edinburgh – Day Three

The Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh is the perfect pace to maximise you experience

On day three, we will have a leisurely start to the day.

Once you are collected from your accommodation and ready for the road, we will resume our adventure with a fond farewell to the Isle of Skye as we cross the Skye bridge, taking us back over to the mainland.

In just a short while we will reach Eilean Donan Castle where we will stop and take some time to explore.

As one of Scotland’s most iconic castles, it’s definitely one to be visited and photographed. It’s simply gorgeous and has appeared in countless famous movies.

On our way to Loch Ness

On leaving the castle, the journey towards Loch Ness follows some incredible scenery.

We will be following a route through Kintail and passing the Five Sisters, a high mountain ridge rising steeply from Glen Shiel to a breathtaking height of just over three and a half thousand feet.

The Five Sisters are recognisable by their five distinctly pointed summits. This area is known for its exceptional scenery and is protected against any inappropriate development.

Our next stop will be at the famous Loch Ness, best known for its sightings of a mysterious monster. You will have the opportunity to do your own monster spotting on the shores of the Loch.

We will be stopping in Forth Augustus which is situated at the most southern tip of Loch Ness. Here you will have the chance to walk by the shores of the loch, or along the Caledonian canal and lock system.

There will be plenty of time here to enjoy the canal side and marvellous views of the loch. There are a number of dining and shopping opportunities in this area in which to indulge.

Experience Inverness

This Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh includes the wonderful city of Inverness and our journey here will continue along the south side of Loch Ness.

We might be lucky enough to see something happen in the loch, or to even knock on the door of a man who has some inside information to share with us.

Steve Feltham is a real Nessie hunting legend who has made his name known to many people worldwide. Steve has been searching for the Loch Ness Monster for the last 28 years.

On now to Inverness for a quiet night in, or a late night out. You will be staying close to the city centre.

On arrival in the city we will get you checked into your accommodation for the evening and provide you with some suggestions of places to eat and drink whilst in Inverness.

We think that you’ll find it to be a warm and friendly small city with lots to offer, and one of the main highlights of your tour to the Isle of Skye from Edinburgh. Many of the pubs and restaurants have live traditional music and great value meals. Some of our favourites include the Waterfront, McGregors and Hootananny Inverness.

The Final Day of our Isle of Skye Tour from Edinburgh

After collecting you from your accommodation for the final leg of our four day Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh, we will be sharing with you tales from the catastrophic battle between Jacobites and Government troops at Culloden Battlefield.

You will be able to set foot on the site of the last pitched battle on British soil and appreciate the true scale of the momentous clash. From this experience, you will find out why this battle that lasted only one hour changed the way of life of the Highlands and Islands forever.

On to Clava Cairns and the Cairngorm National Park

Not too far from Culloden, we will next visit Clava Cairns. We will delve even further back and discover the importance of the prehistoric 4,000 year old stone circles and burial mounds here.

This is a hugely significant and exceptionally well preserved site which has undoubtedly been the inspiration for Craig na Dun in Diana Gabaldon’s popular Outlander books.

Leaving Clava Cairns, we will head due south and through the Cairngorm National Park. The views in this area are simply stunning. You’ll hear some more about the wonderful wilderness of this area and why it has become such and important part of the Highlands.

Highland Folk Museum Stop-Off

The next stop on our Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh is the Highland Folk Museum.

You will get the chance to experience how Highland people lived and worked from the 1700s up until the 1960s. Furthermore, this outdoor museum displays over 30 historical buildings, some of which have been built from scratch on site and others moved here from other places nearby.

There’s even a replica highland township from the 1700s which was used as a filming location for the hugely successful TV series ‘Outlander’, based on the popular books by Diana Gabaldon.

You will have time for lunch at the Folk Museum and the opportunity to the explore the area at your own pace.

If the idea of visiting a Whisky Distillery is of interest to you then your guide will offer you this as an option.

Last Stop – The Hermitage

Finally, our last stop on day four will be a gentle walk through big tree country to the famous waterfall and salmon leap at The Hermitage.

This part of the country is quite sublime with a range of some towering Douglas Fir trees set beside a series of waterfalls of the river Braan.

On the final leg of our return journey from the Isle of Skye back to Edinburgh, we will cross over the River Forth and get a bird’s eye view of the famous Railway Bridge.

This bridge amazed the world when it was finally completed in 1890 and has become an enduring symbol of Scotland’s engineering heritage.

When we arrive back in the city, it’s time to pick up our bags and bid our fond farewells as we complete this amazing Isle of Skye from Edinburgh tour.

We welcome children who are over 6 years old. Sorry, but for this tour we do not carry younger children or infants as this can be unsettling for other passengers.

Our four day classic Skye and Inverness tour leaves from Stand ZE, Waterloo Place in Edinburgh at 8.00am, and then from Stirling Railway Station at 9.45am.

Our four day Isle of Skye from Edinburgh tour returns to Waterloo Place in Edinburgh, and also offers drop off points in St Andrews, Dundee and Stirling.

No. The cost of accommodation is not included in the tour price. Simply choose the type of accommodation from the options below when you book your tour and we will make your reservation.

Apart from a camera to record all the memorable sights you’re going to see on your Edinburgh to Isle of Skye tour, and possibly a pair of binoculars for wildlife spotting, you’ll also need to be mindful with clothing.

Whilst Scotland’s weather is beautiful, it can be changeable, so be sure to dress in layers that can be added to or taken away as needed. Ensure you have waterproof walking boots, a waterproof jacket, and a hat and gloves too. Even in summer, the hilltops we may explore can be both wet underfoot, and breezy too.

On the other hand, during the summer months, you’ll be well advised to pack some sunscreen and insect repellent.

We ask that you limit your luggage to a single small suitcase of maximum weight 15Kg per person.

There’s some further useful information here about what you’ll need for your tour .

Fàilte gu Eilean a’ Cheò

The Isle of Skye, or simply Skye (/skaɪ/; Scottish Gaelic: An t-Eilean Sgitheanach or Eilean a’ Cheò ; the Misty Isle), is the largest and northernmost of the major islands in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. At 639 square miles (1,656 square kilometers), the Isle of Skye is the second-largest Island in Scotland after Lewis and Harris and boasts some of the UK’s most dramatic mountain and coastal scenery.

The island’s peninsulas radiate from a mountainous hub dominated by the Cuillin , the rocky slopes of which provide some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the country.

The island has been occupied since the Mesolithic period, and over its history has been occupied at various times by Celtic tribes including the Picts and the Gaels, Scandinavian Vikings, and most notably the powerful integrated Norse-Gaels clans of MacLeod and MacDonald.

The 18th-century Jacobite risings led to the breaking-up of the clan system and later clearances that replaced entire communities with sheep farms, some of which involved forced emigrations to distant lands. Resident numbers declined from over 20,000 in the early 19th century to just under 9,000 by the closing decade of the 20th century. Skye’s population increased by 4% between 1991 and 2001.

The latest Isle of Skye population is 13,143. This is based on data from 2017. The population on Skye is growing, and it is projected to increase to almost 15,000 over the next 20-25 years.

The primary industries are tourism, agriculture, fishing, and forestry. Skye is part of the Highland Council local government area. The island’s largest settlement is Portree, which is also its capital, known for its picturesque harbour. Links to various nearby islands by ferry are available, and since 1995, to the mainland by a road bridge. The climate is mild, wet, and windy. The abundant wildlife includes the golden eagle, red deer, and Atlantic salmon. Heather moor dominates the local flora, and nationally important invertebrate populations live on the surrounding sea bed. Skye has provided the locations for various novels and feature films and is celebrated in poetry and song.
