Fast Travel In Red Dead Online

Red Dead Online Game Modes & Features Detailed

Red Dead Redemption 2, in spite of having a massive game world and relatively slow forms of transportation – horses – doesn’t exactly spoil players with convenient fast travel. The situation is different in Red Dead Online though, as it features a different system. In Red Dead Online it’s much easier to “fast travel” and significantly more useful in terms of actually moving between points of interest.

As described in our guide , fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 is highly limited. It is only unlocked once you buy several upgrades for your camp. It only works one-way, and only from your camp. You can’t fast travel between Valentine and Strawberry, for example. You also can’t fast travel back to camp either. It’s barely useful as a fast travel system at all.

As fun factor likely overtakes adherence to realism on the priority list in Red Dead Online, the system has been overhauled. Taking pointers from some other open-world games, such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Red Dead Online uses a fast travel post based system. Scattered throughout the game world are so-called fast travel posts, which allow you to instantly move to another such post.

Fast Travel In Red Dead Online

Indicated by a small sign-post symbol on your map , which only appears if you are in close proximity, these fast travel posts are little wooden scaffolds with a ram skull on top and a broken wheel at the base in order to help you identify them. Using fast travel will cost you money, and the price is calculated based on how far away your destination is.

You can only travel in between posts, not anywhere on the map from such a post. While this is much more accommodating than the solution in single player, it’s still fairly restrictive when compared to other games. Some, for example, allow you to instantly travel from any point to any other point on the map, while others let you fast travel freely between all points of interest. The system used by Red Dead Online is an ideal compromise between convenience and realism.

There are a total of 16 fast travel posts in the game world. 15 are located at points of interest, while the 16th is located at your camp, the location of which is variable. The camp fast travel post is only unlocked when you reach Rank 65. Check out our Ranking Guide to learn how to reach it quickly.

Fast Travel In Red Dead Online

The 15 fast travel posts are as follows:

  • MacFarlane’s Ranch
  • Manzanita Post
  • Saint Denis
  • Emerald Station

You’ll notice that every location has railway access, or is close to a railway. The actual posts themselves are also physically close to railway stations or tracks. This little detail is an attempt by Rockstar to maintain immersion and realism, implying that the characters catch a train to whichever location they choose to fast travel to.

It also isn’t generally allowed to take your horse with you on trains – at least, we suspect this is the explanation for one of the drawbacks of using fast travel. If your horse is carrying any pelts or carcasses when you use fast travel, they will disappear.

Fast Travel

Fast Travel is a mode of travel in Red Dead Redemption , Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online that allows players to traverse long distances across the map quickly. There are three main ways to fast travel, most of which cost money.

  • 1 Red Dead Redemption
  • 2.2 Stagecoach
  • 2.5 Missions
  • 3 Red Dead Online
  • 4 Cinematic Mode
  • 5 Known Bugs
  • 6 External links

Red Dead Redemption [ ]

In Red Dead , the player can fast travel by the means of a Stagecoach Taxi located in almost every settlement. For a price, they can be driven to any of the following locations and have the option to skip to destination.

Destinations are limited to the following:

  • Benedict Point
  • Las Hermanas
  • MacFarlane's Ranch
  • Rathskeller Fork
  • Ridgewood Farm

Red Dead Redemption 2 [ ]

Fast Travel Map - Red Dead Redemption II

Arthur's Fast Travel map

Players have the option to upgrade Arthur Morgan 's camp lodgings, for a price, after the mission " Money Lending and Other Sins I ." The gang will do little to help in this regard, so the task falls to players. Upgrade options can be found next to Dutch van der Linde 's tent wherever the caravan ends up.

Players must pay the first $220 upgrade fee before the next tier evens shows up. It is this next tier, at $325, that unlocks the fast travel map, so players will need $545 total. Once purchased, Arthur's fast travel map appears outside his wagon or inside his room at Shady Belle during Chapter 4 . After completing the first part of the Epilogue, the Fast Travel map will become available free of charge (i.e. no upgrades are needed).

Alternatively to using the map, the player can fast travel using their camps. Upon setting up camp, the player is able to fast travel to the same places they could when using the map.

Note that destinations the player can travel to are entirely dependent upon where they have already been. Due to this, and that it is difficult to raise that amount of money in the early game, players may want to wait until they have traveled to more areas.

  • Armadillo (after Epilogue 1)
  • Beecher's Hope (after Epilogue 1)
  • Benedict Point (after Epilogue 1)
  • Blackwater (after Epilogue 1)
  • Braithwaite Manor
  • Butcher Creek
  • Caliga Hall
  • Cornwall Kerosene & Tar
  • Emerald Ranch
  • MacFarlane's Ranch (after Epilogue 1)
  • Manzanita Post
  • Pronghorn Ranch
  • Saint Denis
  • Thieves' Landing (after Epilogue 1)
  • Tumbleweed (after Epilogue 1)
  • Van Horn Trading Post
  • Wapiti Indian Reservation
  • The gang camp's locations from Chapter 2 to 6 ( Horseshoe Overlook , Clemens Point , Shady Belle , Lakay , and Beaver Hollow ; only available as long as the gang resides within those grounds )

On the side note, using Camp Fast Travel more than once per in-game day empties the player's horse's stamina core.

Stagecoach [ ]

Stagecoach - Red Dead Redemption II

Stagecoach option

Like Red Dead Redemption , Stagecoaches are another fast travel option, and they can be found in most towns. Unlike using the fast travel map, using a stagecoach requires money. Not only that, but players need to be aware of what their level of honor is for that particular town. If their honor is too low, the stagecoach will be locked.

Like the fast travel map, the player will only be able to travel to destinations he has already visited. Stagecoaches, however, cannot take players back to their camp.

  • Emerald Station

If the player wishes, they may also be able to fast travel via purchasing a train ticket at a train station. Tickets for the train, which only runs between select locations, can be purchased at the Post Office. Locations include:

  • Riggs Station
  • Wallace Station

Although traveling by train is noticeably cheaper than using stagecoaches, the reachable destinations are limited within three territories ( West Elizabeth , New Hanover , and Lemoyne ).

If the player is at the countryside of a state and wishes to go to its main town, another alternative of Fast Traveling is to vandal, or kill someone and, after arrival of lawmen, just surrender and they will take the player into the town. However, it will cost the player honor, money, and days in prison.

Missions [ ]

The last alternative option for fast travel comes at the end of some missions. This only requires completion of the mission and accepting the option to travel. Players can, of course, refuse the option if they have other matters to attend to, but this will prevent them from fast traveling back to their camp.

Red Dead Online [ ]

In Red Dead Online , the player can upgrade their camp with an Fast Travel post for $700.00 upon reaching Rank 65.

There are 15 fast travel locations on the map. The cost differs depending on the distance from the current destination.

Cinematic Mode [ ]

Cinematic Mode can be used as a form of "auto run" to reach destinations. To do this, the player must place a waypoint on the map, mount their horse, get up to speed on a road, and hold the touchpad/view button to engage Cinematic Mode. The player's horse will automatically navigate to the waypoint. While not "fast travel" properly said, it does allow the player to put down the controller for a few moments. However, hostiles like rival gangs , bounty hunters and predators will still attack, and sometimes the horse's A.I. fails to deal with traffic on the road as well. Any unique random encounter found by the road may also be lost if the player does not pay attention to them.

Known Bugs [ ]

  • As corpses aren't allowed inside the Van der Linde camp , if the player Fast Travels to it with a dead NPC on horseback, the game will instantly bug as soon as it starts the scene of the player entering its grounds.

Red Dead Redemption 2: How to Fast Travel in Red Dead Online

Image of AOTF Staff

There are a couple of different ways to fast travel in Red Dead Online, and it’s pretty similar to the way that you fast travel in the single player side of the game.  Red Dead Online does not feature fast travel by train, instead you need to look out for a different type of fast travel marker in the world.

Anywhere that you find the broken wagon wheel with the ram’s skull on top of it, you can fast travel from this point.  You can also see fast travel spots on the overworld map and they look like a signpost.  You can find these Red Dead Online fast travel locations in Armadillo, Tumbleweed, MacFarlane’s Ranch, Manzanita Post, Blackwater, Strawberry, Valentine, Colter, Emerald Station, Rhodes, Wapiti, Van Horn, Annesburg, Saint Denis, Lagras, Tumbleweed, or you can fast travel back to your camp location.

It does cost money to fast travel though and the prices can be quite steep depending on how far you are looking to go.  The further your destination, the more it will cost you to fast travel in Red Dead Online.

Fast travel is also an instant process now.  Instead of being treated to a short cinematic that showed you riding in a stage coach or riding on a train, you will not just instantly be transported to the destination you choose.

Can you Fast Travel from Camp in Red Dead Online?

You can fast travel from your camp in Red Dead Online, but it is not something you will have access to right away.  It is an unlockable feature that will only be available after you reach level 65.  Once you do reach this level you will be able to purchase the fast travel feature which will add one of the broken wagon wheels to your camp which you can fast travel from.

Red Dead Online: How do you fast travel?

Lucky for us, fast traveling in Red Dead Online is much easier than in the single-player campaign of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Online shares the same huge, map as Red Dead Redemption 2 , which means it can take a while to get around on horseback. Luckily, the new online experience features a fast travel feature. And unlike Red Dead Redemption 2’s single-player campaign , it’s not completely gated behind upgrades and is much easier to access.

To access fast-travel, you must first open up your map and find a signpost icon. Unlike other map icons, these don’t necessarily show up unless you’re relatively close by. There are fifteen total fast travel locations spread out around the map in most towns and major points of interest, such as Valentine and Manzanita Post.

Red Dead Online

Unfortunately, you have to physically go to these locations to use the fast travel system. Once there, you have to find the actual post, marked with a broken wheel and ram skull. This will bring up the fast travel menu dialog, from which you can select your target location. The farther the location is, the most expensive it will cost. Fast travel prices typically range between $2-$8. Once you make a fast travel purchase, you will be instantly teleported to your target destination.

You can also fast travel back to your camp once you reach rank 65. Yes, 65 – this fast travel location is going to take a while to unlock. This upgrade can be purchased from Cripps through the Wilderness Outfitters menu, under Equipment. This fast travel post will work the exact same as the others spread throughout the map.

Red Dead Online

While this is the main method of fast traveling in Red Dead Online , it’s not the only method. You can also use the stagecoaches to travel around just like you did in the single-player campaign of Red Dead Redemption 2 . This costs similar to the fast travel posts, and again requires you to physically go to a stagecoach location.

You can also change locations via the pause menu  (with a few caveats). On the pause menu, go to the Online submenu. From here you can choose one of the free-roam location options. This will transport you to these locations, but will also remove you from your current lobby. Of course, this also means long loading screens. Plus it drops your character randomly throughout the region instead of at any specific location. But it’s also free!

Red Dead Online

While you might be strapped for cash early on in Red Dead Online, fast travel is an important feature that will save you tons of time in the long-run. Getting from point A to point B on horseback can take a long time thanks to the huge, sprawling map. So if you’re in a rush, don’t forget to look for those fast travel posts!

How to fast travel in Red Dead Online

Lewis Painter

Almost a month after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 , Red Dead Online is now available in beta form. That’s the good news. The bad news? The release is staggered – but you can find out more about that in our Red Dead Online release date explainer . Once you do get online, you’ll quickly realise that certain features aren’t present, trains included. So, how do you fast travel in the vast world of Red Dead Online?

Despite it not being explained in the tutorial to the online game mode, there are two ways to fast travel in Red Dead Online. Here’s how.

Not got your copy of RDR2 yet? We’ve got the best Red Dead Redemption 2 deals right here .

While trains aren’t present in Red Dead Online, you can still use stagecoaches to quickly travel around the huge map. The prices are a little cheaper than in Red Dead Redemption 2, making it a little easier to meet up with your Posse if they’re on the other side of the map. To use a stagecoach, head to the nearest icon that looks like a signpost and interact with the broken down wheel with a skull on it.

You’ll be taken to a menu full of places to fast travel to, with only one exception – your camp. We’ll explain why below.

Another way to fast travel in Red Dead Online is, surprisingly, to use the main menu. This is quite a difference from the true-to-life fast travel options present in Red Dead Redemption 2 , which force you to take a train or stagecoach to fast-travel around the huge open world.

rdr online fast travel locations map

It’s not as simple as the main game though. You can access the main menu, head to Online and select one of the free-roam options to fast travel across the map, from the snowy mountaintops of Ambarino to the swamps and bayous of Lemoyne – but there are a few conditions.

rdr online fast travel locations map

The first is that you can’t select a specific location within a region, only the region itself, and secondly, fast travelling will remove you from your current game lobby. We’re not sure if the latter is a glitch (the game is in beta form at the moment, of course) so we’ll keep our eye on it over the coming days for any changes.

While Red Dead Online steps away from using the likes of trains for fast travel online, you can still fast travel to and from your camp. But, with many elements of Red Dead Online, you have to be a certain rank to unlock it. That rank? 65, so you’ll have to make do without it for quite some time and appreciate the intricacy of the open world that Rockstar has created.

Once you do hit Rank 65, simply head back to your camp and approach good ol’ Cripps.

rdr online fast travel locations map

From the Wilderness Outfitters menu, select Camp, and then select Equipment.

rdr online fast travel locations map

From here, you’ll be able to unlock a fast travel station at your camp, allowing you to instantly travel to a variety of locations – both towns and other points of interest – in the online world. It’s worth bearing in mind that like with the main game, this is one-way, and you’ll have to factor in the journey back to camp when contemplating travelling long distances.

Oh, and you won’t be able to fast travel to your camp from a stagecoach until you unlock the fast travel point, so don’t assume you’ll get a stagecoach home from your long travels.

rdr online fast travel locations map

It’s a much better way to get around the map when opposed to the main menu system, but you’ve got to work for it first.

Red Dead Redemption 2 guide to fast travel

That’s one special stagecoach

Red Dead Redemption 2 - the fast travel map in camp

Fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 takes on a few different forms. In this guide, we’ll teach you about them all.

Each one will prove useful in its own way as you travel the vast expanse of Red Dead Redemption 2 ’s world. After all, the scenic route — riding everywhere on Arthur Morgan’s horse — will get old eventually.

Stagecoaches and trains

Stagecoaches and trains are forms of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 , but they’ll cost you. Literally. For a fee, you can hire a stagecoach or buy a train ticket.

The stagecoach icon on the Red Dead Redemption 2 map

Stagecoaches appear on the map as an icon that looks like two intersecting street signs. (It’s called a “taxi coach” in the menu that appears when you hover over it.) For a nominal fee that increases (as far as we can tell) based on distance from your current location, you can take a stagecoach to locations you’ve previously visited.

The post office icon for trains Red Dead Redemption 2

If you want to catch a train, you’ll need to buy a ticket. ( Unless you don’t .) You’d think you’d be looking for a train station, but you might also be looking for a building sitting next to a train track. In one town, Rhodes, what you’re actually looking for is the post office icon (which looks like an envelope). Talk to the clerk inside, and you can purchase a ride on a very Old West kind of transportation.

Actual fast travel

Traditional video game fast travel becomes available after you upgrade your lodgings at the Van der Linde Gang’s camp.

Head to the icon in camp that looks like a briefcase with a dollar sign on it. (It says “Donate to camp” when you hover over it on your map.) There are three upgrades to purchase on the lodging page. The second one, “Next in Line,” costs $325 and says that “Arthur wants a map to help plan journeys.” This is a reference to fast travel.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - the fast travel map in camp

Buy that upgrade, and you’ll find a map on the back of the stagecoach next to Arthur’s bed. Approach it and interact, and you’ll be able to travel to several destinations — a mixture of towns and significant locations like buildings.

Keep in mind that this form of fast travel only works one way — from camp to somewhere else. If you fast travel from camp to, say, a town on the opposite side of the map, you’ll either need to ride your horse, hire a stagecoach or buy a train ticket to get back.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Fast travel guide - How to unlock fast travel

How to get fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s map is a vast, complex beast and sometimes you won’t want to lug your horse halfway across the continent to start a mission. This is where having a method of fast travel comes in handy. While there’s no way of teleporting to discovered locations at any time from the map, there are several methods of transport that’ll certainly prove speedier than a horse.

Below we’ve put together a list of all the fast travel methods in Red Dead Redemption 2 and how to unlock them.

rdr online fast travel locations map

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Here’s how you can unlock fast travel:

  • You won’t be able to unlock fast travel until you start Chapter 2 in the main story.
  • The first step is to complete the mission “Money Lending and Other Sins”. Hand in your first debt, and you’ll be taught how the ledger can be used to upgrade your camp.
  • When you’ve got a free moment and enough camp cash, open up the ledger and flick to the Lodgings section. Upgrade it once, and you’ll have to the option to upgrade Arthur’s tent. Do this and you’ll unlock fast travel.

To use fast travel, go round the back of Arthur’s tent and view the map that’s there. Select a location that you’ve visited before and you’ll magically appear there along with your main horse.

This video by TagBackTV is well worth a watch as it'll show you how to unlock fast travel in-game if you're still unsure.

Other methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

There are two other ways of getting around the map quicker than normal: Stagecoach and train.

Unlocking fast travel from your camp is not a prerequisite! You can use these modes of transport from the beginning of Chapter 2.

How to use a stagecoach

  • There’s a signpost icon near all the major towns and cities in the game, and this is where you’ll find a stagecoach.
  • As long as you’ve been to a certain location previously, you can pay a fare to use the stagecoach to visit that specific destination.
  • If the signpost symbol is locked and greyed out, this means you’re unable to use the stagecoach until after you’ve dismounted from your horse or exited a mission state.

How to use a train

  • At most larger towns and cities there is an envelope icon. Head on over to these locations and you’ll be able to catch a train.
  • Using the train, you can travel to any destination on the list from the very beginning of Chapter 2. It’s also cheaper than the stagecoach too.

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 (Story/Online)

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 (Story/Online)

Sure, Rockstar deserves some credit for creating a jaw-dropping game world for Red Dead Redemption 2 but let’s face it. You won’t feel like taking in the sights when it’s your third time traveling to your destination along the same old path. This is where you appreciate the Fast Travel mechanics in Red Dead Redemption 2.

You can Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 after unlocking it by progressing to the Money Lending chapter and spending 545$. You can also move around the map using Trains, Stagecoaches, and the Auto-Ride feature. Fast Travelling in Red Dead Online is much easier. Simply select a Fast Travel Outpost on the Map and Travel there with no hassle.

But, of course, unlocking it is no walk in the park. Not to mention that the game mechanic comes with restrictions of its own, which is why we’re here to show you how to Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. And while we’re at it, we’ll also go over other ways you can get around the map faster.

All Gold Bar Locations in Red Dead Redemption 2

How To Unlock Fast Travel in RDR 2 Story Mode

Arthur in Camp

There are several caveats to unlocking Fast Travel in the game, but the gist of it is to upgrade your gang’s camp after you’ve started Chapter 2: Horseshoe Overlook. You can start by completing the first five missions in Chapter 2 to Money Lending and Other Sins.

Once you’ve unlocked the Money Lending chapter, you’ll learn about the Ledger behind Dutch’s tent in the camp. Next, you’ll have to upgrade your Lodgings. Specifically, you’ll have to buy First Things First, aka Dutch’s Tent on page 6 of the Ledger, and then Next in Line, aka Arthur’s Wagon.

And voila, you have unlocked Fast Travel. Keep in mind that you need a total of 545 dollars to unlock the game mechanic—220 dollars for Dutch’s tent and 325 dollars for Arthur’s Wagon. You can go to The Heartlands or Treasure Maps to make some easy money if you don’t already have the sum.

How To Use Fast Travel

Sure, you unlocked Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption but slow down your horses. Unlocking the game mechanic doesn’t mean you can hop around on the map as you, please. If you want to make use of Fast Travel, you have to go to Arthur’s tent.

There you can view the map and choose your destination. That means every time you want to go somewhere using Fast Travel, you’ll have to do it at camp, but of course, that’s all right, considering that you get to reach your desired location with your trusted horse in little to no time.

Keep in mind that Fast Travel can only take you to a location as long as you’ve been there before. Moreover, once you get to your desired location, you can’t fast-travel back to camp. You’ll have to, unfortunately, take the long way in this case.

Oh, and if you’ve committed enough crimes to get on the local law enforcement’s radar, you can’t fast-travel to any towns on lockdown.

Ways To Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Of course, if you don’t feel like using Fast Travel or simply can’t because of a sticky situation, you can consider other options as well for getting around the map. Here are a few options:

1. The Train

Red Dead Redemption 2 Train

This one seems like an obvious method. You’ll see an envelope in most of the towns you visit. That’s the train station. Instead of going there to place your Wanted bounties, you can purchase a ticket as well.

The train has a list of destinations where you can go. Just pick one and settle down for a ride.

2. The Stagecoach

Stagecoach

Ever seen that icon with a signpost on it at most of the places you visit? Yeah, well, if you didn’t know before, that’s the Stagecoach, another way to get around the map. The Stagecoach will take you to smaller ranches and any other location you’ve visited.

Sometimes, the Stagecoach might be unavailable, but no worries. That probably means you have to pay a bounty, or you’re on a mission. It could also be locked because you’re riding your horse.

Fix these things, and you’ll be able to make use of the game mechanic. The Stagecoach is more expensive than the Train, but each has its perks, so feel free to choose either one to get around.

3. Auto-Ride

Another way to get around is by using the Auto-Ride feature. All you have to do is enable the cinematic camera while holding the Run button. Let go of the button once your camera is fully on, and voila! Your horse will be running at full speed to your destination.

Of course, like Fast Travel, this feature comes with its restrictions as well. It doesn’t work during missions. Moreover, you can’t use it if you have an NPC riding with you, either. Still, even with the restrictions, the mechanic can come in handy at times.

How To Fast Travel in Red Dead Online?

Fast Travel Outpost in Red Dead Online Map

While there are multiple ways to Fast Travel in single-player, they are a bit tedious. Breaking the immersion and adding a bit of simplicity to traversing the world of Red Dead Online, Rockstar just added loads of Fast Travel Waypoints that you can select on the map and teleport to without much hassle.

Pull up the Map in Red Dead Online and look for the Fast Travel Outpost. It’s a bit hard to find as they only pop up when you’re close by. But you can find them pretty easily near prominent locations, points of interest, and towns.

Go ahead and interact with the Fast Travel Outpost and select your desired location. Remember, the farther you are from your desired location, the more expensive it’s going to be. Another quick note here. If you’re carrying any pelts or carcasses, you’ll pretty much lose them.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel: How to unlock fast travel and other ways of travelling quickly

How to get around the world quickly with Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel is something you'll probably be asking about after your third or fourth long trek between destinations.

Though the game doesn't make a big song and dance about it, the good news is fast travel is in the game - though there is several caveats to how it works.

If you haven't unlocked fast travel yet, then there's other ways of getting round the map as well - allowing you to reach far-off destinations as soon as the game world opens up.

For more help, our Red Dead Redemption 2 walkthrough explains the requirements for fully completing the game's many story missions.

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Fast travel won't be available to you when you start Chapter 2, and has to be unlocked by progressing through the story, and then unlocking a few camp upgrades.

First, play through to mission Money Lending and Other Sins . Hand in your first debt, and you'll learn about the Ledger, allowing you to upgrade your camp .

You want to specifically upgrade Lodgings. Once you have upgraded it once, you'll have the option to upgrade Arthur's tent. Do so, and you'll unlock fast travel.

Of course, it isn't a simple case of selecting somewhere on the map and going there. You have to go to Arthur's tent - specifically, round the back - and view the map. Then, you select a location you've been to before, and you'll appear there, with your main horse , after a transition sequence.

What this means is, even with this unlocked, you cannot decide to jump from somewhere out in the wilderness to another destination - you still have to do that at a camp.

However, if you are close to a specific location, you can travel around the map through other means...

Other ways to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Whether you've unlocked fast travel from your camp (as described above) or not, there are other ways of jumping round the map.

One is by using the stagecoach . This is an icon with a signpost on it, and is usually at most towns, ranches and other named locations on the map.

Provided you've been to that location previously, you can pay to use the stagecoach to that destination.

By the way, if it looks like the Stagecoach is unavailable (there will be a 'lock' symbol on the icon) it means you're likely in a mission, have to pay a bounty or are currently riding your horse - fix these things and you should be good to go.

The other method is by train . At most larger settlements there is a envelope icon, which indicates a train station. This is not only a postmaster and a place to pay your Wanted bounties, but you can also buy a train ticket to far away destinations.

Unlike the stagecoach, you can take the train to any destination on the list right from the start of Chapter 2 (where the game begins to open up). Not only that, it's usually cheaper than the stagecoach - so if you're somewhere where you have the choice of both, grab the train.

Of course, though the train goes to more prominent locations and allows you to go there straight away, the stagecoach visits a lot of smaller ranches, so both come in handy.

Either way, both cost money, and since you'll be starting a lot of your trips from your camp, purchasing the camp upgrades to fast travel from there will be better in the long run.

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Tired of gallivanting on your horse all the time? Here's how to unlock and use fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

While it's fun to gallop through the countryside or run around a town, sometimes you just want to get somewhere fast. Getting to the various towns and regions in Red Dead Redemption 2 often means travelling across the massive map on horseback. However, there are ways to cut down on all that horsemanship and equine bonding.

There are two ways you can fast travel in RDR2 , but you can't just open up the map, choose a location and whisk yourself away at the drop of a hat. You'll either need to track down some public transport or work on those camp upgrades for the Van Der Linde gang, but to give you a helping hand, here's how to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 .

There are two methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 ; you can use public transport such as stagecoaches and trains, or you can unlock the ability to fast travel from camp.

The former - travelling via public transport - is simple. All you need to do is make your way to the nearest ticket station, purchase a ticket to your chosen destination from the kiosk, and then off you go. This'll set you back a few dollars each time, but it definitely makes getting around the map a lot quicker.

You can also choose to fast travel from your camp , but you will need to upgrade your camp first. There are a few upgrades you can make, which you can read more about in our Red Dead Redemption 2 camp upgrade guide.

To specifically unlock fast travel, however, you'll need to do is head to the camp's money box and open up the ledger next to it. From there, upgrade Dutch's lodgings , which has the added benefit of inspiring other gang members to contribute more.

This will also unlock a map upgrade - this is how you fast travel. Buy that after upgrading Dutch's lodgings, and the map will appear in Arthur's area of the camp - its precise location is different depending on where your camp is located but it is usually close to Arthur's tent. Interact with the map and you'll then be able to choose from a list of destinations to travel to on your trusty steed.

It's $220 for Dutch's quarters and $325 for the map upgrade. The easiest way to get this sort of cash is to buy the upgrades after the gang's first big heist, or after finding a few gold bars.

What's better is that once you unlock the map upgrade at camp, you can then easily fast travel anywhere for free. You can access the map from Arthur's camp to venture out into the wilderness, but you can also access the fast travel map whenever Arthur sets up a temporary camp. Just rest, set up Arthur's camp, and select fast travel to pick a destination.

If you're trying to set up camp and keep receiving the 'Cannot create camp while there is activity nearby' error, even though you're out in the sticks and not a soul is near, don't worry. Instead, open Arthur's inventory and go to 'Items'. There'll be an option to setup camp here, and it should work without a hitch unless there really is some activity nearby.

So, if you're out hunting legendary animals and find yourself needing to pay a visit to Valentine or Saint Denis, set up a quick camp!
