This travel guide is your key to unlocking the wonders, discovering the secrets, and experiencing the sheer perfection of Lysefjord.

What is Lysefjord?

First, let’s find out what exactly Lysefjord is. Lysefjord, which translates to “Light Fjord,” is named after the lightly colored granite cliffs surrounding it. It is a fjord situated in southwestern Norway, in the region of Rogaland. It is 40 kilometers in length and reaches depths of up to 500 meters. Additionally, Lysefjord showcases impressive geological formations shaped by glaciers over thousands of years.

One of its most popular sights is the iconic Preikestolen , or Pulpit Rock, a massive cliff plateau 604 meters above the fjord. This famous viewpoint offers panoramic views of the fjord and its surrounding landscapes. Another must-visit spot is the daring Kjerag, where you can see the famous Kjeragbolten, a massive boulder between two cliffs. Finally, the waterfalls that cascade down the fjord’s steep walls add to the picturesque allure of Lysefjord.

The Lysefjord in Ryfylke is one of the longest fjords in Norway. Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), Kjerag, and the Flørli stairs are the major attractions, and fjord cruises from Stavanger are a popular activity.

The mesmerising mountains surrounding Lysefjord were sculpted by the massive ice sheets that covered Norway during the Ice Age. Along extensive stretches of the fjord, the mountains soar over 1000 metres above sea level. The intricate geological features, landscapes, and loose sediments make Lysefjord a distinctive and unparalleled natural phenomenon.

Lysefjord holds the certification for Sustainable Destination, a quality mark for destinations that systematically work to reduce the negative impact of tourism on local communities.

Minimum depth: 19 metres deep

Maximum depth: 456 metres deep

Nearby cities: Jørpeland, Sandnes, and Stavanger

Villages along the Lysefjord: Lysebotn, Flørli, Songesand, Forsand, Oanes

Most famous hikes: Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), Kjerag, Flørli stairs, and "Lysefjorden rundt" (hike around Lysefjord)

You can experience Lysefjord all year round with fjord cruises departing from Stavanger by Rødne Fjord Cruise. During the summer, you can join a day trip from Stavanger to the remote village of Flørli, where you can ascend the world's longest wooden staircase with 4,444 steps.

Kolumbus operates regular ferry services between Lauvvik and Lysebotn throughout the year.

The express boat MS Rygerfjord has room for 92 passengers and 10 bicycles. The boat arrives at Lauvvik, Forsand, Bratteli, Bakken, Songesand, Kallali, Flørli, Håheller and Lysebotn. Tickets must be pre-booked at billetter.kolumbus.no .

Lysefjord is an ideal destination for hiking. The most renowned mountain hikes in the area are the iconic rock cliff Preikestolen and the boulder at Kjerag . Both hikes are designated as Norwegian Scenic Hikes.

"Lysefjorden rundt" (hike around Lysefjord) is a highly popular signature hike meticulously selected, quality-assured, and warmly recommended by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). Additionally, Flørlitrappene and Kallaliklumpen in Flørli are worth visiting.

There is an extensive range of accommodation options available across all price ranges along Lysefjord.

The impressive The Bolder , designed by Snøhetta, is situated in a breathtaking location offering spectacular views of Lysefjord.

Close by, in Forsand, you will find Gøysa Gard , where you can stay in farmhouse lodgings or rent cottages with fjord views. Another option is Lysefjorden Marina , providing waterfront apartments.

At the innermost part of Lysefjord, you will discover the DNT cabin Lysefjorden Turisthytte . This colourful tourist cabin, which features a restaurant with full service, is just 50 metres from the pier.

In the remote village of Flørli , located midway along the fjord, you can rent apartments, stay in a hostel, or spend the night in the old radio hut. There is also a campsite in the area in front of the café.

Across the fjord, you will find Songesand Camp , which can accommodate 11 people and offers space for both tents and campervans.

Preikestolen Camping , Wathne Camping , and Landa Park Camping are campsites within driving distance of Lysefjord.

The power-producing village of Flørli has transformed from an agricultural and industrial community into a cultural village. Join a historical village walk through the area and listen to the incredible stories about the power station, water pipes, and the 4,444 steps along the pipeline. Hike up the Flørlitrappene (Flørli stairs) or explore the spectacular Kallaliklumpen . There are cafes and plenty of accommodation options in Flørli.

At the innermost part of Lysefjord lies the power-producing village of Lysebotn , which has supplied electricity to large parts of the country since the 1950s. This small village has around 10 permanent residents but Kjerag attracts a multitude of tourists and BASE jumpers from all corners of the world during the summer season. Lysebotn Travel Guide: Where to Stay, What to Do, and Where to Eat

Lysebotn is an idyllic Norwegian village located at the end of the Lysefjord, and brings in over 100,000 tourists each summer. This small village is not a tourist attraction in itself, but serves as a base for some of Norway’s most incredible hiking areas!

You’re going to want to visit Lysebotn is you want to hike in the famous Kjerag mountains, get your photo taken at Kjeragbolten, or maybe even want to go BASE jumping from the steep mountainside.

Kjeragbolten 2

We’re going to be taking a closer look at all things related to Lysebotn in this article, including where to stay, how to get to Lysebotn, and of course the best things to do in Lysebotn.

Lysebotn general information

The small village of Lysebotn is something special. It’s only home to about 6 to 10 permanent villagers , but the entire village transform into a crowded tourist town during the summer season.

When the summer hiking seasons begins in June, hundreds of seasonal workers and over 100,000 tourists make their way to this little village.

You will find a few different places to spend the night and a couple of options of places to get something to eat, but it’s still a very tiny village even when the summer season is at its peak.

Lysebotn. Photo by Falk Lademann / CC BY 2.0.

The busiest place in Lysebotn is the harbor where the ferry arrives with new hikers and other tourists.

One of the best things about Lysebotn is the incredible nature. It’s surrounded by steep mountains on both sides, and it’s a perfect example of the Norwegian fjord landscape that has made it to the UNESCO World Heritage Site .

That said, very few people visit Lysebotn without the intention of going on nearby hikes . Lysebotn is really a kind of base camp for hikers, so I don’t recommend it as a tourist destination unless you are planning on going hiking in the Kjerag mountains.

Kjerag is popular among hikers, as well as people base jumping.

Where to stay in Lysebotn

Despite being a small village with under 10 permanent residents, there are surprisingly many places to stay in Lysebotn. Below are a few options if you’re looking for a place to spent the night. In addition to the ones listed below, there are a few small B&B options as well.

As with all popular tourist towns in Norway, be prepared to book early to even be able to get a room on your desired date , and also be prepared to pay a pretty penny for the accommodation.

Lysebotn seen from Øygardstøl.

Lysebotn Tourist Camp

Lysebotn has a campsite that is very popular with hikers, and much like other Norwegian campsites, you can rent a places to put your tent down. In addition to just getting a place to put your tent, you get access to toilets, showers, a barbecue area, a small kitchen areas and access to a nearby store.

You do not need to book in advance, and there will always be free spots for tourists looking to pitch their tent at the campsite.

The prices are pretty nice, and you pay 110 NOK for a tent, plus 75 NOK per adult per day.

Kjerag Lysebotn Camping & Resort

Kjerag Lysebotn Camping & Resort has 6 different cabins for rent, at 990 to 1950 NOK per night. They house between 2 and 5 people, so it’s a great option if you want some privacy or don’t bring a tent with you.

The small cabins are on the campsite area, and you get access to all the other campsite areas such as the barbecue, showers and more. It even has electricity and free wifi!

You can book a cabin by sending them an e-mail .

Kjerag Lysebotn Bed & Breakfast

Kjerag Lysebotn Bed & Breakfast has 30 rooms that can be rented, for prices between 1,300 and 1,600 NOK per night. The rooms themselves are pretty nice, so it’s a good option if you want more comfort than in a tent or in a small cabin.

One of the great things about these rooms is that they include breakfast, giving you a great start to your hiking day in Kjerag!

Hauane B&B

Hauane B&B is a bed and breakfast at an old farmhouse, and they offer both single and double rooms for 990 NOK or 1090 NOK per night, including breakfast.

One of the best things about staying at Hauane is that they have access to a private sauna, which is really amazing when you get back from a long hike in the evening!

Book your stay at Hauane B&B here .

Lysefjorden Tourist Cabin

Lysefjorden Tourist Cabin is a cabin owned by the Norwegian Tourist Association, usually just referred to as DNT. The cabin has lots of different rooms, including a few dormitories for those who want a cheap and easy place to spent the night.

Booking to Lysefjorden Tourist Cabin can be done at their website by clicking here . Expect to pay 575 Norwegian kroner for a single bed in the dormitory, or 1,900 NOK for a couple to rent a small, private room for the night.

Anyone can book a room at Lysefjorden Tourist Cabin, and you do not need to be a DNT member for this one like many other DNT cabins .

Wild camping in Lysefjorden

Norway allows for anyone to pitch a tent anywhere outside of used areas , but it’s not particularly easy to find a suitable place to go wild camping in Lysefjorden.

To legally pitch your tent, you need to find a place that is defined as “ utmark “. Utmark can be translated to “unfenced land” , but there are few to none areas down in Lysebotn where you can pitch your tent .

The best option is to follow the river upstream a bit outside the city. There are some good places to pitch a tent once you get a bit outside the village, but it’s a bit of a walk from downtown Lysbotn.

Do not pitch a tent on any agricultural fields !

Another option is to pitch the tent somewhere up in the Kjerag mountains. There are literally thousands of amazing camp areas there, but you obviously won’t be able to get access to the amenities of Lysefjorden if you go up in the mountains.

Where to eat in Lysefjorden

There are not that many places to get a good meal in Lysefjorden, but there are a few options.

The only real restaurant in Lysebotn is Olavs Pub & Bistro , which is located on the campsite grounds. Despite that, it’s open to both campsite guests and non-guests.

The restaurant serves regular restaurant dishes, and turns into a pub at night.

Another place to get your food is at Kjerag Cafe & Restaurant , better known as Ørneredet (The Eagle’s Nest – Yes, they really named it the same as a certain dictator’s summer house). This unique restaurant is located 640 meters above the fjord, with an incredible view down towards Lysebotn.

It’s an incredible place to eat your dinner, and well worth the ride up the 640 meters to get there! The restaurant is located very close to where you begin the Kjerag hikes, so it’s worth stopping by before or after hiking.

Ørneredet over Lysebotn provides an incredible dining experience with an extraordinary view! Photo by Jos Jelier / CC BY 2.0.

It’s also worth noting that there are no regular grocery stores in Lysebotn , so you can’t just go and buy food to eat either.

There is a small kiosk that sell some food and snacks at the camping area, so you can definitely buy some hot dogs and hamburgers to make a barbecue, or some easy hiking food to bring along for the next hiking adventure. But this kiosk has a very limited selection compared to regular grocery stores.

What to do in Lysebotn

So what do people do when visiting Lysebotn? The short answer is hike or extreme sports ! Lysebotn is known to be among the best places for BASE jumping in the entire world, and you will see lots of people in wingsuits and with parachutes jumping down from the mountain towards the village.

Most people go to Lysebotn to hike in the incredible Kjerag mountains though, but there are also a few other options of things to do in Lysebotn.

Stone cairn at Kjerag on the way up to Kjeragbolten.

Hiking in Kjerag (Including Kjeragbolten)

The number one thing to do in Lysebotn is to get up to Øygardstøl (at the top of the hairpin road) to start hiking in the Kjerag mountain area. You can get to Øygardstøl by bus (there are plenty of buses from Lysebotn to Øygardstøl), or by car. Be prepared for the 300 NOK parking fee if you want to drive your own car though!

There are lots of different hiking trails from Øygardstøl, including a hike that takes you to the famous Kjeragbolten as seen on the photo below. Don’t worry, Kjeragbolten is considered 100 % safe to stand on , but there are usually long queues to get your photo taken on the bolt.

Kjeragbolten 1

The hike to Kjeragbolten is considered to be challenging, and takes between 5 and 6 hours in total.

It’s possible to book a guide to accompany you in the Kjerag mountains and to help you get to Kjeragbolten.

Many tourists are satisfied by spending a full day hiking, but it’s fully possible to bring your tent to make it a multi day hike. The Kjerag mountains are vast, and there are plenty of hiking trails to follow for multiple days.

Experience the incredible hairpin bend road

When you’re in Lysbotn, you definitely want to experience the incredible road up the mountainside with its 27 hairpin bends! It’s not as well-known as the famous Trollstigen , but I really like this hairpin bend road myself, and both the view and the drive itself is spectacular!

It’s best experienced as a passenger, so you might want to ride the bus. There are multiple bus departures from Lysebotn up the road daily.

If you’re feeling up for a challenge, consider renting a bike and bike up the incredible road that has an ascension of over 650 meters.

The road to Lysebotn is filled with 27 hairpin bends!

Enjoy the fjord

Lysbotn is at the base of the incredible Lysefjorden, one of Norway’s many amazing fjords. And just like all other fjords, you have the opportunity to do some water sports, go fjord fishing , or go on a day cruise.

Fishing at the ocean shore

Some other activities that can be done in the fjord includes renting kayaks, canoes, SUP boards, pedal boats, water skis, wakeboards and more. SBK Base rents out all these things .

BASE jumping in Kjerag

Kjerag is famous among extreme sport practitioners, and it’s a BASE jumper’s paradise. You will see lots of people wearing parachutes, wingsuits or other basejump equipment on sunny and cloudless days, and many will even land on the field next to the restaurant in town.

Base jumping at Kjerag mountains. Photo by Xof711 / CC BY-SA 3.0.

I don’t recommend anyone spontaneously doing a BASE jump while visiting Lysbotn, but it’s a great place for a BASE jump if you’re into these kinds of things.

Many consider Kjerag to be one of the best BASE jumping spots in the entire world, but it’s obviously still a dangerous sport. There are fatalities from BASE jumpers who jump down from Kjerag, so it’s absolutely not risk free to do something like this.

Check out the video below for a quick introduction to how BASE jumping at Kjerag is like.

Rent a bike

You can rent both regular bikes as well as mountain bikes from SK Base, which will allow you to go biking in the Kjerag mountains, or attempt the challenging ride between Syrdal and Lysbotn.

How to get to Lysebotn

Lysebotn is located about 3 hours from Stavanger, but it’s actually a bit difficult to get there.

The easiest way to get to Lysebotn is to ride the public bus from Stavanger to Lauvvik, then get on the public passenger ferry from Lauvvik to Lysbotn.

The ferry is operational all year round, and departs either twice or thrice daily.

There are also cruise ferries that goes directly from Stavanger and even Bergen to Lysebotn, but these are far more expensive than riding the bus and getting on the public ferry.

MS Lysefjord. Photo by Hesselhaker / CC BY-SA 4.0.

You can also get to Lysebotn by car, but only during the summer season. The road typically opens in June, and stays open until sometime in October. The drive from Stavanger is roughly 3 hours, and includes some rather challenging driving over the Syrdal mountain.

From relaxing at stunning beaches with crystal-blue waters to watching the sun go down with a margarita in hand, Mexico is a dreamy place to go on vacation ... until you factor in the crowds. Tourist hotspot Cancun and its neighboring cities attracted 5.6 million Americans in 2022, according to the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo (via TheStreet ), and it's well-known that the Yucatán Peninsula is suffering from overtourism. For a holiday where you can avoid crowds at busy beaches and find space to lay down your towel, try Mexico's Oaxacan coast, specifically Mazunte.

Mazunte is a small beach town with everything you need for a relaxing seaside getaway. With a population of just 1,000 people, Mazunte is located next to party town Zipolite and an hour away from surf hotspot Purto Escondido. Attracting a crowd of backpackers and yogis, Mazunte is known as a hippie haven and is an ideal vacation spot to enjoy the slower pace of life. Located a few minutes away from the main road, Mazunte's beach will likely be within walking distance from your accommodation and is described by  Tripadvisor tourists as "one of the most beautiful beaches I've seen."

The best relaxing activities for your Mazunte vacation

Although there are plenty of activities on offer for adventurous tourists, the best thing you can do in Mazunte is, well,  nothing . With its sleepy pace of life, you'll feel perfectly content filling your days with relaxing on the beach. And your biggest decision will be whether to order a margarita or a mezcalita. Since Mazunte is a haven for yogis, you can also get your sun salutation on with a peaceful practice at one of the town's many studios. Or book yourself in for a massage to make your vacation even more luxurious.

If all that resting has left you with a bit of energy to take your activities up a notch, Mazunte is said to be a decent place to surf. Its waves can be suitable for beginners and professionals alike, and there are plenty of surf schools in the area that'll be happy to help you get on a board for the first time. If you're a wildlife fan, make whale watching a priority during your Mazunte vacation. It's possible to see whales with your naked eye from Mazunte's beach from December until March — or go on a boat trip to get a closer look.

Mazunte is a haven for eating, drinking, and shopping

From freshly caught fish tacos to cheese-filled tlayudas, Mazunte is a great place to get stuck into Oaxacan cuisine. Thanks to the town's growing reputation as a  wellness getaway , you'll also find plenty of healthy and vegan food on offer as well as traditional Mexican delicacies.

At the end of a long day's sunbathing, relax with a cool beer at one of Mazunte's beachside bars. Mazunte doesn't have a big nightlife scene, so if you're looking to truly let your hair down, get a 15-minute taxi to nearby Zipolite, where you'll find countless beach bars and even all-night raves where you can dance the night away.

If you find yourself in Mazunte on a Sunday, you're in luck — the town's charming market featuring local artisans is a great place to browse, haggle, and shop for souvenirs. If you're in Mazunte during the week, head into one of countless boutique stores to find a new outfit to take home with you.

Hike around Lysefjorden

One of Norway’s most spectacular multi-day hiking trails. World-reknown Preikestolen, Kjerag, and Flørli are all located along the Lysefjord in Ryfylke.

En rød T på en stein med Lysefjorden i bakgrunnen.

Lysefjorden Rundt is one of the country's most spectacular SignaTURes. World-renowned landmarks such as Preikestolen, Kjerag, and Flørli are all located along the route in Ryfylke.

The trail covers over 100 kilometers and is divided into 8 stages. The 42-kilometer-long Lysefjorden offers a wide range of well-known and lesser-known mountain formations and viewpoints.

The path takes you from fjords to mountains multiple times, passing by old mountain farms, abandoned hydroelectric towns, mountain lakes, ravines, and cliffs. You will traverse smooth-sculpted bedrock and lush forests. In addition to the stunning nature, you can discover many cultural and historical treasures.

Lysefjorden Rundt is signposted and marked in collaboration with Stavanger Turistforening and local landowners. The terrain and trail can be challenging at times.

Remember, you don't have to complete the entire Lysefjorden Rundt in one go! Feel free to collect different stages and come back multiple times. Along the way, you can stay overnight in various types of cabins and tourist accommodations.

The following is the recommended route, but you can also hike in the opposite direction:

Stage 1: Vinddalen – Skåpet Easy – 3.5 km There is no public transport to Vinddalen, so you have to arrange your own transportation. The first part of the hike follows a well-marked trail winding through trees and stones into the pine forest. It continues on a partially paved path, crossing marshes and sparse birch forests until reaching Skåpet. The design cabins operated by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) serve as the gateway to the trail network in the Frafjord Mountains on the south side of Lysefjorden.

Stage 2: Skåpet – Flørli Challenging – 10 km Follow the historic "Svenskaveien" through rocky terrain and a wild valley. This stage offers diverse nature, taking you from the high mountains back to the treeline and all the way down to Lysefjorden and the idyllic hydroelectric village of Flørli.

Stage 3: Flørli – Langavatn Very challenging – 17 km The hike starts with a brisk climb of 4,444 steps from Flørli to Ternevatnet, about 2 km from the fjord to the summit. According to CNN, the staircase is among the most terrifying in the world. Take it easy, turn around, and enjoy the view of Lysefjorden and Flørli frequently! You will continue on steep smooth rocks and undulating high mountain terrain, passing through small mountain birch forests, along idyllic lakes, and through impressive moraine landscapes. Be prepared for significant elevation changes.

Stage 4: Langavatn – Kjerag – Lysebotn Challenging – 13 km From Langavatn, the hike initially crosses smooth-sculpted bedrock before reaching the edge of Frafjordheiane, offering extensive views in all directions. One of the highlights along this stage is Kjeragbolten, a boulder wedged between two cliffs at an altitude of 984 meters. Standing on the boulder itself provides a thrilling adrenaline rush. The route continues on flat, smooth-sculpted bedrock along the edge of Lysefjorden. Then, it goes up and down two ridges before descending to Øygardstølen. From here, you can hike or take a bus or taxi to the charming village of Lysebotn, where you can enjoy a three-course meal, take a refreshing shower, and sleep in a comfortable bed.

Stage 5: Lysebotn – Songedalen Fjellgard Challenging – 24 km From Lysebotn, a spectacular construction road leads up to Fyljesdalen, offering views of Lysedalen, the Kjerag massif, and Fyljesdalen, where an English glider crashed during Operation Freshman in 1942. The trail continues through Songedalen on an easy gravel path. At the unique Songedalen Fjellgard, you can experience Lysefjorden's coolest outdoor toilet, a genuine throne!

Stage 6: Songedalen Fjellgard – Bakken Gård Moderate – 10 km This stage follows historical roads past charming farms along the shores of Lysefjorden. Follow the Dalaåna River from the mountains all the way to the fjord at Songesand. Eventually, the river flows through a spectacular canyon-like valley. If coming from the east, you'll have a view of the fjord, Neverdalsfjellet, and Preikestolen in the distance throughout the day. From Songesand, the trail traverses the coastal rocks, crosses a challenging rocky landscape, and ascends a steep slope to Bakken. End your day with homemade pizza from the wood-fired pizza oven at the newly renovated Bakken Gard. The tourist cabin used to be the home of the legendary Pilt-Ola, a hiking legend of Lysefjorden.

Stage 7: Bakken Gård – Preikestolen BaseCamp Challenging – 16 km This demanding stage, with some scrambling sections, features several highlights. From "Hoppet," you can see the entire Lysefjorden. The trail passes the spectacular Hengjanenibbå and the legendary Hengjanegården.

Stage 8: Preikestolen BaseCamp – Høllesliheia Challenging – 10 km This stage will take your breath away! After the beautiful Revsvatnet and a passage through dense forest, you reach Lysefjorden. The hike closely follows the fjord for 75% of the time, passing several hundred meters above the sea, along various cliffs and ravines, including Skjerajuvet and Fantahålå, and through magnificent nature with countless panoramic viewpoints. Don't miss the cool "Fantapytten" – Lysefjorden's eternal pool, located approximately midway between Preikestolen BaseCamp and Høllesliheia.

See hired driver's excited reaction to tourist couple's invitation to zipline with them

lysefjord tourist cabin

When Londoners Sering Fye and Monika Bandaraite set off from the UK on the trip of a lifetime to Bali, Indonesia, they had no idea they'd be sharing part of their romantic getaway with a stranger.

Fye booked the vacation as a surprise for his girlfriend's birthday. However, little did she know her boyfriend had an ulterior motive.

“She thought I was just taking her out to Bali for her 30th birthday, whereas I was actually taking her out to Bali to propose to her," says Fye. "I had the whole proposal planned out way before she knew what was going on.”

The marriage proposal went off perfectly, and during their trip, they also took full advantage of Bali's beauty and numerous places of interest. One excursion involved a long drive to a picturesque temple, for which they hired a driver. And when they stopped to eat along the way, the couple invited the driver to join them.

“In our culture, you share everything, especially food,” says Fye. “That's just common courtesy. What you do is if you are around people, whether they are friends or not, you always offer food…We always do inclusion and we always share everything. So that's how the whole relationship started. Because after we offered to buy him breakfast, his whole attitude towards us changed because he saw we weren't just your regular tourists. He maybe saw us more as friends after that because of the gesture.”

Over the next few days, their friendship grew. And even though their driver insisted he didn't want to intrude, the couple happily included him in all their activities, taking him ziplining, coffee-tasting, visiting waterfalls, and sharing several more meals.

“We had a very good time with him,” says Bandaraite. “He was taking us to the best restaurants that he knows. Good quality food. Indonesian food. He knew all these places, and that's what we wanted…We only spent three days of the whole 16 days [with him], so it wasn't a big deal at all. It was just nice to do something for somebody.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

lysefjord tourist cabin

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

lysefjord tourist cabin

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

lysefjord tourist cabin

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

lysefjord tourist cabin

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
