Klook is an online travel agency focusing on travel experiences and attractions and was established in 2014. [2] It was founded by Eric Gnock Fah, Bernie Xiong and Ethan Lin. The company was founded in 2014. [2]

In March 2015, Klook launched a mobile app, which was then featured on Apple iTunes store across 14 countries and regions in Asia. It proved a pivotal moment for the company: it was on the iTunes store that one of Klook’s early investors, Zhuyan Li, vice president of Matrix Partners China, spotted the app and contacted Klook looking to invest. In 2021, the company integrated with Google with Things to do platform, a display feature that allows consumers to discover, plan and compare prices across activities and attractions around the world. [8]

Funding [ edit ]

In 2017, the company raised series B funding of US $30 million led by Sequioa Capital. [9] Another round of series C funding were raised by the company during the same year from existing investors Sequoia Capital and Matrix Partners of US $60 million. [10]

In 2021, the company raised US $200 million in series E funding. [11] It will be used to develop a booking management platform Rezio, to support tour operators and activity providers in Taiwan and Japan locations. [12]

In 2014, Fah and Lin looked into LinkedIn for technical person who can join the company as co-founder. After reviewing around 100 profiles they have opted Xiong and by meeting several times to confirm their potential idea. In 2018, short four years, the trio succeeded with a billion dollar business. During the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the travel industry were heavily impacted all over the globe. The company came up with an idea of livestreaming significant to online travel-based platform with cross-industry partnerships by hiring popular local influencer to host livestreams with merchant partners. Providing useful tips and storytelling to their consumers who are awaiting to travel. This resulted in average uplift in conversion rates grow by fourfold. [20]

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) [ edit ]

In 2020, Klook Cares helped to feed 5,000 migrant workers with their Klook Cares initiative, which partnered vendors like Casuarina Curry, Ananda Bhavan, Chef in a Box and Curry Nations, to provide lower-cost meals to the Migrant Workers Centre and the Alliance of Guest Workers Outreach. [21]

In March 2021, the company launched Klook Cares initiatives that allows people to donate their SingapoRediscovers Vouchers (SRVs) to groups such as migrant workers, through non-governmental organisation It's Raining Raincoats . [22]

A major drive for Klook’s success is its ability to draw VCs and funding. Within a year since inception, Klook raised US$1.5 million seed capital from angel investor Wu Xiaoguang, a former executive of Tencent. Last October, Klook further secured US$5 million Series A funding led by Matrix Partners. In March this year, Klook closed a $30 million Series B funding round led by Sequoia China.

With the latest round of funding, Klook is set to go beyond Asia and disrupt the global travel industry. In this issue, we have the pleasure to sit down with Eric Gnock Fah, the co-founder and COO of Klook. We talked about the current travel tech landscape, insider information to getting funding, the challenges of scaling a business, and the future of Klook.

We have done much research and analysis to identify that the in-destination services segment, spanning from attractions, local tours, to transfers and WiFi, is ripe for disruption along with favorable market trends. Flights and accommo dation are getting cheaper, hence propelling fast growth in travel coupled with increasing interests in experiential travel.

From day one, we decided to painstakingly re-invent in-destination services supply chain with technology in order to improve our suppliers’ efficiency. At the same time, we also committed to facilitating the most seamless booking flow. Simply building a website to list products would relied heavily on manual process that would put user experience at a detriment.

2. What do you think of the current travel tech landscape? Where is it heading?

As mentioned, travel tech is highly competitive whereby scale is a major barrier to entry. If you look at the global landscape, Priceline and Expedia own the entire space, with the exception of fast-rising Airbnb. Meanwhile in China, Ctrip – a partly Priceline-owned booking platform – is close to monopolizing the online travel sector.   Now, even in the hottest segment of in-destination services, the landscape is also forming with the likes of Klook growing with unparalleled scale in the region.   The next breakthrough in travel tech is likely to be more in the field of tools and function, such as itinerary planning and Chatbots, rather than simply online booking.

3. Klook is obviously very successful in drawing investors. Do you have any tips you can share with other local entrepreneurs on how to secure funding?

It really depends on the stage of the venture.

At the early stage (i.e. seed or series A), it’s really about the team: How committed are the founders? We invested our own money and didn’t take any salary until Series A, and even now, still at a very minimum level – we are all in. Also, the team have to really understand the ins and outs of the sector they chose and how they plan to scale it into a billion dollar business.

At mid stage (i.e. Series B), it’s still about the team, but now, it is more about the broader management team that the founders built, as well as the growth track record.

4. What are the elements of a killer pitch?

Show that the founders are committed. Ideas can always change and business often pivots. What doesn’t change is the founders’ commitment to building something big.

5. You raised US$5 million Series A funding last year. How did you use the funding to bring Klook to where it is now? What are the main challenges in scaling the business?

We invested mainly in hiring – from tech team to marketing.   The main challenge remains in hiring the right talent to scale a pan-Asia business, as previously there was practically no company that has successfully scaled across Asia from China, North Asia, to Southeast Asia.

6. Now that a new round of funding is out of the way, tell us how this round of funding will get your company to the next level and what’s next for Klook?

We will continue to invest in human capital as well as in expanding our destinations coverage globally.   At the same time, users will see a wider array of in-destination services. We started off with tours and activities, and recently expanded to cover airport transfers, inter-city rail to sim cards and WiFi routers. You will soon find more dining options available.

7. Where do you see Klook in 5 years?

Our goal is to go IPO before 2020.

8. If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs in Hong Kong what would that be?

Think global from day one and make sure your business model can scale across different countries.

Klook Taps Rise in Domestic Travel for Growth in Experience Bookings

Klook has adapted seemingly well to the pandemic by switching its focus from international inbound travelers to domestic consumers. But along the way, it attracted a new set of commercial rivals. It must stay vigilant.

Travel startup Klook expanded rapidly in the tours-and-activities market until 2020. But the pandemic dried up its key source market of international travelers looking for things to do in destinations worldwide.

“More than 90 percent of our revenue had been coming from cross-border travel,” said Eric Gnock Fah, a co-founder of the company. “But today it’s 100 percent domestic.”

Fah said the Hong Kong-headquartered startup no longer makes most of its revenue from classic day tour products, such as guided walking tours. It introduced products such as “staycations,” which match a hotel stay with a restaurant meal, spa visit, or nearby attraction. The company also expanded its mobility options from intercity train reservations to car rental, particularly in South Korea, Taiwan, and Australia.

Earlier this year, Klook raised $200 million , and it used some of that capital to pivot to become more of an all-purpose online travel agency for primarily domestic travel. The startup has raised more than $720 million since its founding in 2014, and it vies with Berlin-based GetYourGuide as the most heftily funded startup in the experiences category.

We spoke with Fah to learn how the company had to change its inventory, use its enterprise software tools as a wedge to gain share, and partner with — rather than compete against — some of its rivals such as the superapp Grab .

Revenue Gains

As a private company, Klook doesn’t share financial details. But Fah said the early signs were positive.

“In many key markets, meaning the likes of Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and to some extent Singapore, things have been faring quite well,” Fah said. “The domestic revenue has exceeded even the pre-Covid level of the inbound/outbound travel revenue, and in some cases, we’re actually even doing like 50 percent more than before.”

The crisis has required the company to add inventory in categories such as spa treatments, vacation homes, and car rentals. But the domestic travel sector hadn’t been digitized, particularly around the acceptance of online bookings and payments.

By getting an early lead in helping digitize this domestic travel content, Klook hopes it will retain it as a strong domestic segment even after the re-opening of international travel likely causes the company to reshift its focus back to international travelers and the types of experiences they prefer.

Partnership With Grab

Before the pandemic, Klook mainly faced competition from GetYourGuide, TripAdvisor-owned Viator , Booking.com , Expedia , and Trip.com . Today it faces an array of companies trying to add domestic travel experiences to their e-commerce offerings. Players include fast-growing travel tech player and lodging operator Yanolja, Taiwan-based KKday, AirAsia’s digital app, Tencent’s WeChat, and Meituan.

Klook argues that adding supply and making it digitally bookable and serviceable in a seamless way is a difficult operation that some other players, such as food delivery services seeking to add travel as a new segment, may underestimate.

Grab, the ride-hailing platform giant in Asia, seems to have recognized that problem. Singapore-based Grab has partnered with Klook to plug in the missing inventory on its platform.

“We’ve basically plugged in our inventory so that any consumer on Grab can book an activity,” Fah said.

Leading in Taiwan

When Klook faces local competitors, it tries to get an edge by having a more seamless experience. For instance, it works with local attractions providers, such as an aquarium, to help the venue digitize their abilities to accept bookings and payments and serve guests. When Klook sells tickets, it often can offer same-day confirmed bookings via a mobile app. Other rivals often struggle to match that convenience because of the lack of a connection to the new enterprise software used by the attractions.

In Taiwan, during the peak late summer travel season after covid-related restrictions were eased, Klook claims its market share was double the next largest local player’s. Fah said officials in Taiwan pushed attractions vendors to digitize in an act of pandemic preparedness. Klook happened to have an enterprise software system that many vendors picked. An upgrade version of Klook’s system offered optional point-of-sale devices and electronic gates, similar to turnstiles, through partnerships with hardware vendors.

Over time, the attractions will become fully omnichannel and be able to take all types of bookings for all types of brands. But for now, Klook can have an early edge.

Klook also earned popularity for its business-to-business solution by expanding a product for making intercity buses and trains bookable online.

“This was a very offline segment in Taiwan,” Fah said. “We built a customized system to enable vendors to achieve real-time availability of not only bus schedules but also seating. We’re going to push this into Korea and elsewhere in Southeast Asia as well.”

Shifting Fortunes in Korea and Hong Kong

In South Korea, Klook appears to be a bit more on the backfoot.

“Yanolja has raised a lot of money and in some ways is flashing a lot of cash in the market,” Fah said. “So we’re being a bit more careful in our spending in Korea. But we’re optimistic long-term partly because the vaccination rate is quite high and we’re optimistic about when international travel resumes.”

In Hong Kong, Klook is optimistic about a government initiative launched in late November. The government is handing vouchers worth about $640 ($5,000 Hong Kong dollars) to stimulate local consumption. The products Klook offers are valid uses, so the brand hopes to get its share of the stimulus spending.

Worldwide, Klook has slashed its budget for paid search advertising, focusing instead on content and social marketing. That’s because, when it comes to seeking inspiration for domestic experiences, many consumers are finding inspiration via non-search routes, such as visual-based social media. Klook emphasizes marketing in these channels.

Fah argued that Klook is better than other online travel agencies at “creating” demand, or inspiring people to consider booking, say, a staycation with a spa experience when they hadn’t been thinking about it or searching for it. Other online travel agencies have been built to “capture” demand that already exists, using methods like paid search ads and TV advertising, but they’re not good at inspiring interest in new products or product bundles, Fah said.

For operators in the experiences segment, Klook has also had its engineers focus on a long-time pain point of “channel management.”

“We now provide a robust channel management tool for our partners connecting not only, of course, the international markets through the global OTAs [online travel agencies] but also the large e-commerce players such as Grab or even non-traditional players such as Japan Airlines,” Fah said. “We help experience operators distribute their inventory to more channels.”

Klook handles all customer service problems with agents at its subsidiaries and offices across the Asia Pacific. But it is working on enabling consumers and merchants to connect directly to resolve issues more speedily when partners agree to participate.

The innovations that can please a consumer long-term can be a danger to short-term profit. Klook seems to have cleverly navigated the shoals of the pandemic by changing the products it sells and its marketing strategy. But fat profit margins may have to wait until the pandemic ends. The company’s executives didn’t volunteer financial details.

Looking ahead, one of Klook’s investors, EDBI, a Singapore-based global investor , is working with Klook to grow the startup’s corporate service team for departments such as legal, human resources, and research and development, in Singapore.

Klook has been well funded. But a further capital injection from EDBI and other investors may eventually be needed if the pandemic continues to dampen the international tourist travel that provided Klook and its rivals with their highest-margin sales.

SoftBank-backed travel platform Klook raises $200M amid COVID-19

Klook, the Hong Kong-based travel activities platform backed by SoftBank Vision Fund, announced the closure of $200 million in funding for its Series E round, lifting the startup’s total capital raised to date to $720 million.

Aspex Management, an investment fund focused on Asia Pacific led the round, alongside existing backers Sequoia Capital China, Softbank Vision Fund 1, Matrix Partners China, Boyu Capital, as well as a handful of new investors.

Securing sizable funding at a time the COVID-19 pandemic sacks the global economy is congratulatory, not to mention Klook is in an industry severely hit by the virus. The startup, which enables its mostly Asia-based users to book activities in overseas destinations, lost millions of orders over the first few months of travel restrictions. The company quickly regrouped for a pivot to staycation and software-as-a-service for local activity merchants, including ticketing, distribution, inventory management and marketing. Bookings subsequently rebounded.

“There are things to do at home, as well as local things to do when people could travel,” co-founder and chief operating officer Eric Gnock Fah told TechCrunch in an interview last July . “Now [the pandemic] is giving us an opportunity to add a new aspect to it.”

The arrival of the new funding appears timely. Klook reached profitability in a number of markets by last July but overall was still in an aggressive expansion mode, it told TechCrunch at the time. Founded in 2014, Klook exceeded $1 billion in valuation in 2018 but declined to reveal its latest post-money valuation, which almost certainly has increased since it reached the unicorn status. The company currently has no plans to go public, a spokesperson told TechCrunch.

COVID-19 pivot: Travel unicorn Klook sees jump in staycations

In Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan where COVID-19 restrictions have gradually eased, Klook said it saw increased spending on local activities, with bookings reaching near pre-COVID levels. At the height of the pandemic, Klook onboarded 150% more activities compared to the same period in 2019.

Today, Klook’s SaaS software powers millions of bookings for more than 2,500 merchants worldwide. With proceeds from the new investment, it will continue working on the development and roll-out of its merchant SaaS solutions.

“This new capital further strengthens our leading position to take us from defense to offense, as domestic tourism becomes ubiquitous and international travel gradually returns,” said Ethan Lin, co-founder and chief executive at Klook.
