Notification on arrival of a foreign citizen

According to the applicable rules, a receiving party is obliged to notify a migration service about arrival of a foreign citizen to Kazakhstan, as well as about the change of residence. This should be done within 3 working days from the date of arrival of a foreign citizen.

A notification is required in all the cases, regardless of the order of entry: with visa or under a visa-free regime. The notification is submitted by a receiving party. A foreign citizen does not need to apply to a migration service himself/herself.

There are several options to submit a notification:

· online via the Visa and Migration Portal (vmp.gov.kz)

· in paper to a migration service

· online via eQonaq.kz information system

Note: late submission of a notification entails a fine for a receiving party in the amount from 10 to 20 MCI *. Repeated violation during an year entails a 1-year ban on issuing visa invitations**.

Temporary Residence Permit   (TRP)

A temporary residence permit is issued to citizens of the CIS countries. 

The TRC is issued for a period of up to 1 year for the following purposes:

• labour activity (based on an employment contract and an independent contractor agreement (for the EAEU countries), a work permit, a labor patent)
• entrepreneurial activity as a business immigrant
• family reunion
• medical treatment
• missionary activity

A receiving party (individual or legal person) applies for a clearence via Citizen Service Center or a foreigner himself/herself can do this, if there is a notification available on arrival of a foreign citizen (see page 4) and IIN*.  Temporary residence permit is not needed for children under 16 years old. Though it is requested from a spouse, as well as children older than 16 years old.

Note: when leaving Kazakhstan, TRC remains valid until the end of the issuance period. There is no need to get TRC again, the next time you enter the country.

*An IIN is necessary for a foreigner to open a bank account, receive salary on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan, issue a digital signature, get public services, pay national duties, consular fees and make other payments.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Travelers who enter Kazakhstan with tourist visas may not stay longer than 30 days on each visit, and not more than a cumulative 90 days within a six-month period.

Individuals seeking a longer period of stay may apply for a 10-year Kazakhstani visa, with a maximum stay of 60 days for business and 30 days for tourism.

Violating the authorized period of stay in Kazakhstan or engaging in activities inconsistent with your visa category may result in fines, imprisonment, and/or delays upon exit. 

If you wish to apply for a permanent residency permit in Kazakhstan, prior to travel you should obtain a background check from law enforcement in the United States and have it authenticated by state authorities where the investigation was conducted.  

For information about U.S. background checks, refer to the  Federal Bureau of Investigation’s website . The U.S. Mission in Kazakhstan does not fingerprint U.S. citizens.

You must receive permission from the Kazakhstani government before traveling to certain areas bordering China and cities in close proximity to military installations. Please check the  Ministry of Internal Affairs website  for the list of closed areas or contact the  Kazakhstan Embassy . 

Some HIV/AIDS-related entry restrictions exist for visitors to and foreign residents of Kazakhstan.

Visitors applying for a work or residency permit, which is required for U.S. citizens who wish to spend more than six months in Kazakhstan, must submit negative HIV test results with their application to the Migration Police in the city where they intend to work or reside. The results must be less than three months old.

The city HIV clinic in the place of registration can conduct the test or may certify test results performed abroad.

If the original test results are in a language other than Russian or Kazakh, they must be accompanied by an official, notarized translation.

Safety and Security

Terrorism: Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

• High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
• Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
• Places of worship
• Shopping malls and markets
• Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

Crime: The most common crimes encountered by foreign visitors are purse snatching, pickpocketing, assaults, and robberies, although incidents are rare. Be vigilant and do not carry large sums of money on the street. Financial fraud, such as ATM skimming, is prevalent.

The police sometimes conduct identification checks in public areas. Police are not required to demonstrate probable cause to detain individuals. Upon request, you must produce either a passport or an Embassy or Consulate-certified copy of your passport.

Kazakhstani security personnel may at times place foreign visitors under surveillance. Hotel rooms and telephones may be monitored, and personal possessions in hotel rooms may be searched.

Harassment and extortion by imposters, genuine law enforcement, and other officials does occur. Never voluntarily give your wallet to anybody. If pressured by a police officer, tell the officer that you will report the behavior to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate and to the officer’s supervisors. Try to obtain the officer's name, badge number, and license plate number, and note where and when the incident happened.

Do not use unmarked taxis. At the airport, do not leave with anyone who does not show pre-arranged identification, even if the person is holding a sign with your name.

The U.S. Mission in Kazakhstan is aware of isolated incidents when foreigners have been drugged, robbed, and physically assaulted at bars and nightclubs as well as in unmarked taxis.

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate for assistance. Report crimes to the local police at 102 and contact the U.S. Embassy at (+7) 7172-70-21-00 or the U.S. Consulate at (+7) 7272-50-49-01. Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

• Help you find appropriate medical care.
• Assist you in reporting a crime to the police.
• Contact relatives or friends with your written consent.
• Provide general information regarding the victim’s role during and after the local investigation.
• Provide a list of local attorneys.
• Provide information on victim’s compensation programs in the United States.
• Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution.
• Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home.
• Replace a stolen or lost passport.

Domestic Violence: U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy or Consulate for assistance.

Tourism: The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

• Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Kazakhstan are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.
• You may be taken in for questioning if you don’t have your passport with you or if you take pictures of certain buildings or other sensitive infrastructure.
• Kazakhstani customs authorities may enforce strict regulations concerning the export of items such as antiques. Please see our Customs Information page for more information.
• Kazakhstan has a zero-tolerance policy for driving under the influence of alcohol. You can be detained immediately if you are driving under the influence of alcohol.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the Embassy or Consulate immediately. See our webpage for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  Visitors to Kazakhstan engaging in missionary work or other religious activities must register with the Local Executive Authority office (Akimat) where the activities will take place. Kazakhstan also imposes restrictions on the importation of religious literature.

You may be fined and deported from Kazakhstan for performing any religious work without proper religious worker registration. Representatives of faith-based non-governmental organizations are considered subject to the registration requirement, even if their activities are not religious in nature.

LGBTQI+ Travelers: There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Kazakhstan; however, these events may be disrupted by local authorities or members of the public. Negative social attitudes towards LGBTQI+ persons are widespread, and local LGBTQI+ persons are sometimes subject to physical and verbal abuse, as well as unwanted attention from police. Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Kazakhstan prohibits discrimination against persons with disabilities, and the law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.

Women Travelers: Domestic violence is common and sexual assaults do occur, though there have not been recent reports of sexual assault committed against U.S. citizens. See our travel tips for women travelers .

Options for medical care are limited and well below U.S. standards. U.S. citizens often depart Kazakhstan for medical treatment, including many routine procedures. Some prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines are not widely available in Kazakhstan.

For emergency services in Kazakhstan call the Rescue Service by dialing 112. Other provider numbers are: 101 for Fire, 102 for Police, 103 for Emergency Medical Assistance, and 104 in the event of a gas leak.

Ambulance services are:

• not present throughout the country or are unreliable in most areas except in major cities.  
• not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
• not staffed with trained paramedics and often have little or no medical equipment.

Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

We do not pay medical bills . Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance : Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. Doctors and hospitals often expect cash payment for health services.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with  Kazakhstan’s National Center for Expertise  to ensure the medication is legal in Kazakhstan.

Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations recommended  by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Earthquakes:  Kazakhstan is an earthquake-prone country. The U.S. Department of State has ranked the earthquake threat level within the Almaty region as Level 4 (the highest level assigned). Building practices within Kazakhstan do not generally meet U.S. seismic standards. Local authorities do not have sufficient resources to respond to a large-scale disaster.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: Roads in Kazakhstan are in poor repair, especially in rural areas. Signage and lighting on roadways are poor.

• Potholes are common and are often dangerously deep.
• Mountainous roads, including the highway between Almaty and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, should be avoided at night or during poor weather.
• Roads outside urban areas are often closed in winter months due to high winds and drifting snow.

Traffic Laws: Drivers often disregard traffic signals, ignore lane markings, drive after excessive alcohol consumption (despite official “zero tolerance”), drive into oncoming lanes of traffic, and move at excessive speed – including during adverse weather. Pedestrians frequently dart in front of cars.

• Visitors should drive defensively at all times as many local drivers do not follow traffic laws. Road rage can be a problem, and we recommend a non-confrontational response to such behavior.
• Accidents involving severe injury and/or death are common.
• Traffic police have reportedly stopped cars to extort bribes on main city streets and at periodic checkpoints on major highways.

Public Transportation:  Buses can be very crowded and unsafe.

Due to the danger of theft or assault, be selective regarding which taxi you use, and always avoid entering a cab that already contains persons other than the driver. The U.S. Mission highly discourages hailing unlicensed private vehicles on the street and negotiating a fee with the driver on the spot. Ridesharing applications are available.

Aviation Safety Oversight: As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Kazakhstan, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling for official duties on Kazakhstani airlines without prior approval, except for Air Astana and FlyArystan, due to safety concerns.

E-visa of the Republic of Kazakhstan

On January 1, 2019 the Republic of Kazakhstan introduced  a pilot project  procedure for obtaining a single entry visa for foreigners in electronic format.

An electronic visa  ( business, tourist and medical treatment categories ) is being issued in accordance with a valid invitation from the Kazakh side, considered by the migration service units of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the established procedure.

For reference:  the Rules for issuing invitations, approving invitations for entry of foreigners and stateless persons to the Republic of Kazakhstan, issuing, cancelling, restoring visas to the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as extending and reduction their validity terms, approved by the Joint Order of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 11-1-2/555 dated November 24, 2016 and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 1100 dated November 28, 2016.

Tourist electronic visas are issued to citizens of  105  states, business and medical treatment visas -  18  states (the list is attached).

Tourist visa (category B12) is issued with a single entry for a period of up to 90 days and the right to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan no more than 30 days.

Business visa (category B1) is issued with a single entry for a period of up to 90 days and the right to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan no more than 60 days.

Business visas (category B2-B3) are issued with a single entry for up to 90 days and the right to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan no more than 30 days.

Medical treatment visa (category C12) is issued with a single entry for a period of up to 180 days and the right to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan no more than 90 days.

Foreigners can enter/exit the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan using valid electronic visas  only through the checkpoints of international airports of Nur-Sultan and Almaty.

The electronic visa is issued through the Visa  and Migration Portal ( https://vmp.gov.kz/en/ ) 

The electronic visa is valid only for the visa recipient, it  does not apply to accompanying persons and is not  extend able. In case of travel document (passport) replacement an electronic visa should be obtained again.

Paid consular fees are not refundable.

The consular fee for a single tourist visa is 60 US Dollars, for business and medical treatment visas - 80 US Dollars.

Passport provided by a visa recipient should meet the following criteria:

1) not to cause doubts about the authenticity and belonging to its owner, contain reservations, records, erasures and corrections, torn or embroidered pages;

2) to have at least 2 blank pages;

3) to expire not earlier than 3 months from the expiry date of the requested visa;

4) to have marks about extension of validity period.

If the discrepancy of information is determined in the issued electronic visa and travel document certifying the identity of the foreign citizen,  the electronic visa will be considered invalid  and may cause a denial of entry to the Republic of Kazakhstan.

When crossing the State Border of the Republic of Kazakhstan and during stay in the country, a foreign citizen should have a valid travel document (passport) and a printed electronic visa.

Foreign citizens who have valid electronic visas are exempted from registration in migration authorities.

(step-by-step instruction)

- in order to obtain an electronic visa, a foreign citizen should register on the web portal ( https://vmp.gov.kz/en/ ) 

- enter the section "electronic visa" and confirm existence of invitation;

- learn the requirements for obtaining an electronic visa;

- enter the invitation number ( invitation number issued by migration authorities is sent by the inviting side in the Republic of Kazakhstan ) and fill in the required passport details;

- after confirming the invitation,  verify and confirm the compliance of the information in electronic visa and travel document (passport) ;

- pay consular fee online ( after payment it's important to return to the personal cabinet of the Visa and Migration portal );

- print an electronic visa ( the visa is being formed at the personal cabinet );

- present a printed electronic visa when passing through passport control at the international airports in Nur-Sultan and Almaty. Annex 1 Annex 2

Electronic Visa System for Kazakhstan

The Kazakhstan eVisa is an online visa , introduced in January 2019, which allows eligible citizens to travel to Kazakhstan for purposes of tourism and business , as well as for medical treatment for certain nationalitie s.

The eVisa Kazakhstan was introduced by the government of Kazakhstan in order to expedite the process of obtaining a visa for Kazakhstan for eligible citizens. The Kazakhstan visa online is valid for a maximum stay of 30 days in the country.

Eligible citizens can apply through the simple Kazakhstan eVisa application online. Applicants can complete the form in just a few minutes with personal, passport and travel information. It is also necessary to provide a Kazakhstan invitation letter number , and answer a few security-related questions, in order to receive an online Kazakhstan tourist visa via email .

The Kazakhstan online visa can be used to enter the country at select points of entry, either N ursultan Nazarbayev International Airport or Almaty International Airport .

It is necessary for travelers to submit an online Kazakhstan visa application at least 5 working days before the expected date of arrival in the country.

Those who wish to visit Kazakhstan for purposes other than tourism, business, or medical treatment are required to apply for a Kazakhstan visa from their nearest Kazakh Embassy or Consulate .

Kazakhstan eVisa Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to meet the following Kazakhstan eVisa requirements in order to submit an application:

• Obtain an invitation letter from the Migration Service of Kazakhstan and provide the invitation number on the eVisa application form
• Have a passport containing at least 2 blank pages, valid for at least 3 months from the expiry date of the Kazakhstan eVisa
• Provide valid credit or debit card details to pay the Kazakhstan eVisa fee
• Supply a current email address at which to receive the approved eVisa.

A further key eVisa requirement for Kazakhstan specifies that the applicant should print a copy of the approved online visa to present alongside their passport upon arrival in the country. Applicants with dual nationality should ensure they use the same passport to enter Kazakhstan as that used to complete the eVisa application.

Kazakhstan travel requirements state that it is necessary to enter Kazakhstan on the dates specified on the eVisa application form. If the holder’s travel dates change, it will be necessary to apply for a new eVisa.

U.S. citizens are able to visit Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 30 days for all purposes of travel, with the exceptions of employment and missionary work. Individuals traveling visa-free in Kazakhstan cannot stay for longer than 30 days at once, and not more than a cumulative 90 days within the last six-month period.

Individuals traveling for both business and tourism may qualify for 10-year Kazakhstani visas.  Travelers with a visa are able to stay for periods of up to 60 days at a time on business, or up to 30 days at a time for tourism.  Kazakhstan issues five-year, multiple-entry visas to applicants qualifying for diplomatic, official, and media travel.

As of January 11, 2020, registration with the local Migration Police is no longer required for travelers to Kazakhstan.

* It is the responsibility of the Kazakhstani host or inviting party (hotel, landlord, employer, school, individual, etc.) to report foreigners’ arrival within three working days. Notification can be done  online  or in person at a local migration police office. If foreigners substantially change their location by traveling and staying in a different city or residing in a different jurisdiction, their host should report the new location to the local Migration Police.

This page reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British Citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Kazakhstan set and enforce entry rules. If you’re unsure how Kazakhstan’s entry requirements apply to you, contact its UK embassy, high commission or consulate .

All travellers

UK nationals no longer need a visa to enter Kazakhstan, unless they are residents. Visitors are strongly advised to have proof of either an onward or return journey as visa-free entry is for 30 days.

If you’re fully vaccinated

All COVID-19 related restrictions, including PCR testing and vaccination certificates, have been lifted.

Proof of vaccination status

Kazakhstan recognised the UK’s proof of COVID-19 vaccination record ; however, from 8 June 2022 you are not required to show proof of vaccination when travelling to Kazakhstan.

If you’re not fully vaccinated

The PCR certificate requirement for entry into Kazakhstan has been removed.

If you’re travelling from the UK, you do not need to quarantine when arriving in Kazakhstan

If you need further information about entry requirements, contact the local immigration authorities or the nearest Kazakh embassy. You should also check with your airline or travel company for the latest information.

If you’ve had COVID-19 in the past year

From 8 June 2022 you do not need to show your proof of vaccination, proof of having had COVID-19 in the past or a PCR certificate for entry into Kazakhstan.

Children and young people

There are no specific requirements for children and young people.

If you’re transiting through Kazakhstan

Transiting is when you pass through one country on the way to your final destination.

Transiting through Kazakhstan is permitted for travellers who meet the requirements of their final destination.

If you are transiting through Kazakhstan on your way to another country and will be passing through immigration (sometimes known as a layover), for example to stay in a hotel for a flight the next day, you need to follow normal entry procedures

Check your passport and travel documents before you travel

You can stay in Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 30 calendar days. A number of visits is unlimited, but a total period of stay without a visa should not exceed 90 calendar days within a 180-day period.

You should contact your nearest Kazakh Embassy for further information.

If you do need a visa, make sure you have the right visa for the purpose of your travel, especially for business visas or work permits. Check the validity dates of your visa and any associated restrictions carefully before you travel.

Registration

Since 10 January 2020, it has been the responsibility of the host person or hotel to notify immigration authorities of a foreigner’s arrival. This should be made within three working days from the date of the guest’s arrival in country and can be done online on the Visa and Migration portal or in writing to the Migration Service.

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of three months beyond the expiry date of your visa. Your passport should also have at least one blank page for your visa.

Dual nationality

Dual nationality is not recognised in Kazakhstan. If you enter Kazakhstan on a Kazakh passport and also hold British nationality the British Embassy can only provide very limited consular assistance. In cases of arrest or detention, consular access is unlikely to be granted.

What is a Kazakhstan visa on arrival?

Kazakhstan visa on arrival is a visa-free entry permit that allows tourists to enter the country without obtaining a visa in their country of residence. 

The visa can be obtained at the Kazakhstan airport upon arrival. However, being eligible for a Kazakhstan visa on arrival does not mean you will secure a visa at the port of entry.

As such, travelers must have an onward ticket, sufficient funds for their stay, and an invitation letter from a Kazakh institution or individual to secure this visa.   

 Travelers can apply for a Kazakhstan visa on arrival at the following airports: Aktau Airport, and Almaty International Airport. 

Others include Atyrau Airport, Oral Ak Zhol Airport, and Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport.

To enter Kazakhstan, a passport valid for six months on entry is required by nationals referred to in the chart above. Your passport should also have at least one blank page for your visa.

Nationals of Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and all EU countries can visit and stay in Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 30 calendar days.

Kazakhstan Entry Requirements

Kazakhstan requires U.S. citizens entering the country to have a valid passport with at least 3 months of validity from time of entry. Ordinarily, U.S. visitors may stay in Kazakhstan visa-free for 30 days (and not more than a cumulative 90 days in a six-month period), but this practice has been temporarily suspended. Visas are currently required for all travelers entering Kazakhstan.

Visa Requirements in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan may issue U.S. citizens a 10-year multiple-entry visa, with a maximum stay of 60 days for business and 30 days for tourism.

Five-year multiple-entry visas are available for diplomatic, official, and media travel.

Visas can be obtained from the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Washington, DC or the Consulate of Kazakhstan in New York.

Potential Issues

Overstaying a visa.

Fines or exit delays may result from overstaying or otherwise violating the terms of a Kazakhstan visa. Included in these terms may also be proof of onward or departing travel. In some cases, overstaying a visa can result in imprisonment.

Extending a visa

Visitors may not extend visas while in the country except for student visas, visas for medical treatment, permanent resident visas, and work visas.

Work permit holders may extend their visas until the date the permit expires.

Business visas may be extended in Kazakhstan under certain circumstances: if the permit is for a diplomatic mission, if your business is for an international organization, or if you are in the country at the invitation of the Kazakhstan government. You must have clearance from the U.S. police in order to seek a work permit in Kazakhstan.

Closed areas

Visitors may not travel to certain areas in Kazakhstan without permission from the Kazakhstani government. These areas include those surrounding certain military installations, and regions in proximity to the Chinese border. Foreigners may not visit the town of Baikonur, surrounding areas in Kyzylorda Oblast, and the town of Gvardeysk.

Even with permission from the Department of Migration Police, visitors may face demands for authorization documentation from local officials. Trouble from local authorities should be reported to the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate.

Passport registration

Kazakhstan embassies or consulates will register your passport when they issue your visa abroad or at a land border crossing. Traveler's will receive a white registration card upon entering at an airport or land port of entry, and must keep this card with them throughout their stay. If the card contains two stamps, a visitor is properly registered; those with only one stamp have 5 days to register with the Migration Police. Each registration is valid for a three month period.

Religious missionaries

Kazakhstan created a new visa category for missionaries. Those performing missionary or religious work must register themselves with the local Department of Justice. Registration must take place even hen religious activities are not the primary reason for visiting Kazakhstan.

U.S. citizens may face deportation for leading religious service or prayers, addressing a religious congregation, or performing religious music. Representative from faith-based NGO's may need to register even if they are not planning to engage in religious activities.

Do Indian Citizens Need A Kazakhstan Visa For Indians

Indian nationals are not required to start the Kazakhstan e visa for Indians application when they wish to visit Kazakhstan. The Indian passport holders can visit Kazakhstan as it is visa-free for 14 days. For immigrants who arrive in the Republic of Kazakhstan in a manner that does not require a visa after thirty calendar days from the date of crossing the State border of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

There's an exception from the following countries' citizens, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the People's Republic of China, and the Republic of India. They are permitted to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 14 days after their arrival.

Iranian, Chinese, and Indian nationals can enter Kazakhstani for up to 14 days for tourism or unpaid business travel, based on a new visa-free agreement. Travelers under this agreement can take up to three trips that last up to 14 days each, within 180 days, and must leave Kazakhstan and re-enter after the 14 days have expired on each trip. You cannot take up any work during your stay in Kazakhstan.

What Is Visa-Free Travel

Visa-free travel is the ability to enter a country without applying for a visa. The visa free entry will only be granted to provided that you meet the requirements set out by the Kazakhstan government.

Types Of Kazakhstan Visa For Indians

The following types of visas are available for E-Visa. The Kazakhstan visa for Indians is issued after payment of consular fees and state duties according to the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

A Kazakhstan tourist visa (category B12) is issued with a single entry for up to 90 days and the right to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan for no more than 30 days.The following types of visas are available for E-Visa. Single-entry business visa, single-entry tourist visa, and single-entry treatment visa.

A single entry visa gives you a Kazakhstan e visa for Indian applicants. A single entry to the Republic of Kazakhstan and travels in the country, stay in and leave as stated on the Kazakhstan e visa online when you applied. The eVisas are issued after you make payment for the consular and state duties according to legislation by the ministry of foreign affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

A Kazakhstan business visa (category B1) is issued with a single entry for up to 90 days and the right to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan for no more than 60 days.

Kazakhstan Business visas (category B2-B3) are issued with a single entry for up to 90 days and the right to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan for no more than 30 days.

A Kazakhstan medical treatment visa (category C12) is issued with a single entry for up to 180 days and the right to stay in the Republic of Kazakhstan for no more than 90 days.

A Kazakhstan Transit visa You need to pay attention that if your stopover at Almaty or Nur-Sultan is less than 24 hours and you want to leave the airport, you must not enter the transit zone but should proceed with the customs control immediately. If your itinerary plan has a transit point is Atyrau, Uralsk, or Kostanay, which are Kazakhstan airports with no international transit zones. You need to have a Kazakhstan e visa for Indians if it's required.

The electronic Kazakhstan e visa for Indians is valid only for you as a Kazakhstan e visa for Indian applicants. It does not apply to the other people accompanying you and is not extendable. You must apply for the electronic visa for the travel document replacements(valid visa). Citizens of the selected country can apply for an electronic Kazakhstan e visa for Indians by category. A5 Investor Visa, B1 Visa for a business trip, B2 Visa for a business trip, B3 Visa for a business trip, B12 Tourist Visa, and C12 Visa for treatment.

E-visa is only issued if there is a valid invitation from the Kazakh side. To apply for an e-visa, you need an invitation number received from the Kazakh side. The electronic visa is printed for presentation at the state border crossing and the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Kazakhstan e visa for Indians(evisa) allows you to enter/exit the Republic of Kazakhstan through Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport and Almaty International Airport.

What Are The Kazakhstan Visa Requirements

There are documents required for the Kazakhstan e visa for Indians.

The valid passport you provide as the Kazakhstan e visa for Indian applicants must meet the following criteria.

Passport-size photograph.

The invitation letter.

The covering letter.

The Valid Passport You Provide As The Kazakhstan E Visa For Indian Applicants Must Meet The Following Criteria

Must not cause doubts about the authenticity and whether it belongs to you. Contain marks, reservations, records, erasures, and corrections, torn or embroidered pages. Must have at least 2 blank pages intended for Kazakhstan e visa for Indians, except for recipients of visas for departure from the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The passport validity should expire before 3 months from the expiry date for the Kazakhstan e visa for Indians requested, except for those who are leaving the Republic of Kazakhstan. Therefore, the passport shouldn't have any marks of validity period extension.

What To Expect When You Arrive In Kazakhstan

For most entry visas, your passport should remain valid for at least six (6) months after your planned departure date. Once it is approved, the issued Kazakhstan visa for Indians will normally be glued to your passport. Each application for a Kazakhstan visa for Indians will need to be supported by a letter of invitation.

For citizens of certain countries, a letter of invitation is not required for single-entry official, private, business, and tourist visas. • Thieves posing as police officers or 'meet-and-greet' drivers at airports have robbed travellers. Pre-arrange your transport if you can. If approached by a police officer, driver or official, ask to see their ID.
• Terrorism is a threat in Kazakhstan. Targets may include places popular with foreigners. Be alert to possible threats, especially in public places. Monitor the media for new threats.

• Ticks are common in forested areas, especially from spring to autumn. Tick bites can expose you to disease. Regularly check your body for ticks during and after visits to forest areas.
• Declare all prescription medication and other restricted items on arrival. You could face charges if you don't declare medication or if you exceed the legal limit.

It's also illegal to take photos near some official buildings. Some places, including larger shops and supermarkets, ban photography. You may be arrested if you are recording protest activity.
• Penalties for drug offences are severe and include long prison sentences. Serious crimes, such as murder, may attract the death penalty.
• You may need to get official documents before you travel if you plan to live or work for long periods in Kazakhstan or you plan to marry there. Contact the nearest embassy  or consulate of Kazakhstan  before you travel.
• Always carry your passport or a certified copy with your registration. Identity checks by police are common.

• Visa-free entry is available for Australians. Entry requirements can change at short notice. Contact the nearest  embassy  or  consulate  of Kazakhstan to confirm entry requirements before you travel.
• If you overstay your visa or breach your visa conditions, authorities may fine, imprison or deport you. 
• Your accommodation provider is responsible for registering travellers within 3 working days of their arrival at the address. This includes family and friends and all forms of accommodation operators. Check that this has been done on your behalf. See the Visa and Migration portal for details.

Full advice

Petty crime and assault.

Theft, pickpocketing, bag-snatching and assaults occur. They can happen:

• on public transport
• in shopping areas
• at open markets, including the Green Market in Almaty
• at restaurants
• near major tourist hotels and nightclubs, especially in the Almaty region

The risk of crime increases at night.

To lessen your risk:

• keep an eye on your belongings
• avoid walking alone at night
• monitor the media for new safety or security risks

Food and drink spiking

There are reports of thieves drugging and robbing travellers in nightclubs and bars in Almaty.

To reduce your risk of food and drink spiking:

• never leave your drinks or food unattended
• don't accept food, drinks, gum or cigarettes from strangers or new friends

Crime targeting expats and travellers

Criminals have targeted the expat community in Atyrau and Aktau in western Kazakhstan in the past. Expats have been the victims of violent attacks and muggings .

Carjackings have been reported.

Thieves posing as police officers or 'meet-and-greet' drivers at airports have robbed travellers. Official taxi drivers and police officers have ID.

To stay safe when using cars and taxis:

• pre-arrange your transport if you can
• avoid taking unofficial taxis or taxis that have other passengers
• always keep car doors locked, windows up and valuables out of sight, even when moving
• if a police officer, taxi driver or official approaches you, ask to see their ID.

Cyber security

You may be at risk of cyber-based threats during overseas travel to any country. Digital identity theft is a growing concern. Your devices and personal data can be compromised, especially if you're connecting to Wi-Fi, using or connecting to shared or public computers, or to Bluetooth. 

Social media can also be risky in destinations where there are social or political tensions or laws that may seem unreasonable by Australian standards. Travellers have been arrested for things they have said on social media. Don't comment on local or political events on your social media.

Demonstrations and protests.

On 2 January 2022, violent protests occurred in Almaty and other regions of Kazakhstan, leading to injuries and deaths. The situation is stable but may deteriorate rapidly. Ensure you have security plans in place.

To stay safe during civil unrest:

• be vigilant and avoid large gatherings and protests
• monitor the media for possible unrest and avoid those areas
• follow the advice of local authorities and security announcements

Public protests and events that draw large groups of people can turn violent. Authorities will arrest both participants and bystanders, even for non-violent demonstrations.

Overland border crossing by road or train to neighbouring countries may not be possible or safe, and access to fuel may be limited.  In the past, there have been tensions around the border with the Kyrgyz Republic. Security issues could emerge if tensions intensify.

If you plan to travel between Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic:

• monitor the media and local sources
• keep up to date on new security risks in the border regions

Terrorism is a threat in Kazakhstan. An attack could occur at any time. Targets may include places popular with foreigners.

Attacks can be indiscriminate.

People have been killed or injured in past terror attacks. Targets included:

• public transport
• transport hubs
• public places popular with foreigners

To stay safe: 

• be alert to possible threats, especially in public places
• report suspicious activity or items to police
• monitor the media for new threats
• take official warnings seriously
• follow the advice of local authorities

If there's an attack, leave the area as soon as it's safe to do so.

Earthquakes

Earthquakes occur in Kazakhstan.

Severe weather

People have died in snow-related accidents in recent years, including:

• snow falling from roofs
• prolonged exposure to extreme cold
• car accidents

If a natural disaster happens:

• secure your passport in a safe, waterproof place or carry it on you
• monitor local media and other sources, such as the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System
• keep in contact with friends and family

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance.

Get comprehensive travel insurance before you leave. 

Your policy needs to cover all overseas medical costs, including medical evacuation. The Australian Government won't pay for these costs.

If you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. This applies to everyone, no matter how healthy and fit you are.

If you're not insured, you may have to pay many thousands of dollars up-front for medical care.

• what activities and care your policy covers
• that your insurance covers you for the whole time you'll be away

Physical and mental health

Consider your physical and mental health before you travel, especially if you have an existing medical condition. 

See your doctor or travel clinic to:

• have a basic health check-up
• ask if your travel plans may affect your health
• plan any vaccinations you need

Do this at least 8 weeks before you leave.

Medications

Not all medication available over the counter or by prescription in Australia is available in other countries. Some may even be considered illegal or a controlled substance, even if prescribed by an Australian doctor.

If you plan to bring medication, check if it's legal in Kazakhstan. Take enough legal medicine for your trip. 

Carry a copy of your prescription and a dated letter from your doctor stating:

• what the medicine is
• your required dosage
• that it's for personal use

Declare all medicine on arrival. You could face charges if you either:

• don't declare restricted medicines
• carry amounts over the legal limit

Officials may charge you for undeclared medicines even if you have a doctor's prescription and letter. Contact the nearest embassy  or consulate of Kazakhstan  for advice.

Health risks

Insect-borne diseases.

Visiting forested areas may expose you to tick bites. Ticks can carry diseases. They are common from spring to autumn.

Regularly check your body for ticks during and after visits to forest areas.

If a tick bites you:

• remove it from your body as soon as possible
• make sure you remove the whole tick
• monitor the site for any signs of infection

Tick bite prevention

HIV/AIDS is common. Take precautions if you engage in activities that expose you to the virus.

Other health risks

Waterborne, foodborne, parasitic and other infectious diseases are common. They include:

• haemorrhagic fever
• tuberculosis
• brucellosis
• leishmaniasis

Serious outbreaks sometimes occur.

To protect yourself from illness:

• in rural areas, drink boiled water or bottled water with sealed lids
• avoid ice cubes in rural areas
• avoid raw and undercooked food, such as salads
• avoid unpasteurised dairy products
• avoid dogs and other mammals

If an animal bites or scratches you, get immediate medical help.

Get medical advice if you have a fever or diarrhoea.

Medical facilities.

Medical facilities in Kazakhstan are below Australian standards. Basic drugs and equipment are in short supply.

You often need to pay in cash up-front before doctors or hospitals will treat you. This includes for emergency care.

If you become seriously ill or injured, you may need to be evacuated to the United Arab Emirates or another place with better facilities. Medical evacuation can be very expensive.

You're subject to local laws and penalties, including those that appear harsh by Australian standards. Research local laws before travelling.

Law enforcement agencies in Kazakhstan cooperate closely with agencies in Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries. If you commit an offence in one of these countries, you may be detained in another (including at the border) and extradited for prosecution.

If you're arrested or jailed, the Australian Government will do what it can to help you under our Consular Services Charter . But we can't get you out of trouble or out of jail.

Penalties are severe for carrying, using or trafficking in illegal drugs. They can include prison sentences and heavy fines.

Carrying or using drugs

Death penalty

Serious crimes, such as murder, may attract the death penalty.

Photography

It's illegal to take photos:

• of airport facilities
• near military and security establishments
• near border areas
• near some official buildings
• in premises where there are bans on photography, including many larger shops and supermarkets

Bans apply even if there are no notices banning photography.

Living and working in Kazakhstan

You may need to get official documents before you go to Kazakhstan if:

• you plan to live or work there for long periods
• you plan to get married there

Kazakhstan will only recognise an Australian-issued document if it is  authenticated . Find out what you need to do from an embassy or consulate of Kazakhstan before you travel.

You need an official letter of no objection from the Australian Embassy in Moscow if you plan to either:

• apply for a Kazakh residency permit, or
• get married in Kazakhstan
• Legalising documents
• Living or working overseas

Identity checks by police are common.

Always carry your passport and your registration. A certified copy, including your registration, is usually sufficient.

It's illegal to drive if your blood alcohol reading is over 0%.

Australian laws

Some Australian criminal laws still apply when you're overseas. If you break these laws, you may face prosecution in Australia.

Staying within the law and respecting customs

Dual citizenship

Kazakhstan doesn't recognise dual nationality.

If you're a dual citizen, this limits the consular services we can give if you're arrested or detained.

If authorities find out about a second nationality, they may:

• restrict your entry
• rescind your Kazakh nationality

If you're an Australian-Kazakh dual national, you might have to do national service if you visit Kazakhstan.

In deciding which passport to travel on, think about:

• the possible implications for your Kazakh citizenship
• your national service obligations
• your ability to access Australian consular help if authorities arrest or detain you
• Embassy  or consulate of Kazakhstan  
• Dual nationals

Local customs

Standards of dress and behaviour are conservative in Kazakhstan.

Same-sex relationships are legal, but not widely accepted.

Take care not to offend. If in doubt, dress and behave conservatively and seek local advice.

The Islamic holiday month of Ramadan  is observed in Kazakhstan. Respect religious and cultural customs and laws at this time.

During Ramadan, eating, drinking and smoking may be illegal in public during the day. If you're not fasting, avoid these activities around people who are. Seek local advice to avoid offence.

Visas and border measures

Every country or territory decides who can enter or leave through its borders. For specific information about the evidence you'll need to enter a foreign destination, check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination you're entering. 

Visa-free travel for short stays

Before you travel:

• check the dates your visa is valid
• any rules or restrictions

Visa-free entry is available for Australians. You can stay in Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 30 calendar days on each entry. The number of visits is unlimited, but the total period of stay should not exceed 90 calendar days within a 180-day period. You're not allowed to work under the visa-free arrangement.

The host individual or accommodation provider is responsible for registering travellers within three working days of their arrival at the address. This includes family and friends and all forms of accommodation operators. Check that this has been done on your behalf. See the  Visa and Migration portal  for details.

If you overstay your visa or breach your visa conditions, authorities may fine, jail or deport you.

Entry and exit conditions can change at short notice. Before you travel, c ontact the nearest embassy  or consulate of Kazakhstan  for details about visas, currency and customs.

Longer stays requiring a visa

You should contact your nearest  embassy  or consulate of Kazakhstan  for further information.

Make sure you have the right visa for the purpose of your travel, especially for business visas or work permits. Check the validity dates of your visa and any associated restrictions carefully before you travel.

Anyone who has overstayed their visa needs to apply to the local migration service for an extension and may have to pay a fine.

Other formalities

Yellow fever vaccination.

You may need a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter Kazakhstan if you arrive from a country with a risk of yellow fever.

Migration card

Officials will issue you with a migration card (white slip) on entry.

Keep this card in your passport. You'll need it:

• to check into hotels
• for any official business
• to leave Kazakhstan

The migration card must contain 2 stamps.

If you didn't get a migration card on entry, or your migration card contains only one stamp, contact the nearest Migration Police office.

Medical certificate

If you plan to stay longer than 3 months, you must register with local authorities, you'll need a medical certificate showing a negative HIV result. 

Export laws

Strict rules apply to the export of antiquities.

Children travelling alone or with only one parent or guardian must carry a letter of consent for travel. Both parents must have signed the letter.

Registration

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of three months beyond the expiry date of your visa. Your passport should also have at least one blank page for your visa.

Some countries won't let you enter unless your passport is valid for 6 months after you plan to leave that country. This can apply even if you're just transiting or stopping over.

Some foreign governments and airlines apply the rule inconsistently. Travellers can receive conflicting advice from different sources.

You can end up stranded if your passport is not valid for more than 6 months.

The Australian Government does not set these rules. Check your passport's expiry date before you travel. If you're not sure it'll be valid for long enough, consider getting a new passport .

If you're travelling to Kazakhstan, your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 3 months beyond the expiry date of your visa. Your passport should also have at least one blank page for your visa.

Lost or stolen passport

Your passport is a valuable document. It's attractive to people who may try to use your identity to commit crimes.

Some people may try to trick you into giving them your passport. Always keep it in a safe place.

If your passport is lost or stolen, tell the Australian Government as soon as possible:

• In Australia, contact the Australian Passport Information Service .
• If you're overseas, contact the nearest Australian embassy or consulate .

Passport with 'X' gender identifier 

Although Australian passports comply with international standards for sex and gender, we can't guarantee that a passport showing 'X' in the sex field will be accepted for entry or transit by another country. Contact the  nearest  embassy, high commission or consulate of your destination  before you arrive at the border to confirm if authorities will accept passports with 'X' gender markers. 

·         LGBTI travellers  

The local currency is the Kazakh Tenge (KZT).

Declare amounts over $US10,000 or equivalent on arrival and departure. This covers all forms of currency, not only cash.

Only change your money at authorised commercial banks and exchange bureaus.

Cash payments are preferred. Large hotels accept traveller's cheques and credit cards.

Credit cards are widely accepted in Astana and Almaty.

Outside of Astana and Almaty, ATMs are limited.

Contact your bank to make sure your cards will work.

Local travel

Travel restrictions.

The following areas of Kazakhstan are closed to visitors unless prior permission has been received from the Foreign Ministry and the Interior Ministry, with the agreement of the Kazakh National Security Committee:

• the Gvardeyskiy urban-type village in Almaty region (south eastern Kazakhstan) 
• the town of Baykonur
• the districts of Karmakchi and Kazalinsk in southern Kyzylorda region.

Border regions

Do not cross the border into or out of Kazakhstan illegally.  Overland border crossing by road or train to neighbouring countries may not be possible or safe, and access to fuel may be limited.  

Strict border controls apply to road travel between Almaty in Kazakhstan and Bishkek in the Kyrgyz Republic.

Crossing the land border between the Kyrgyz Republic and Kazakhstan by car can be slow. Customs checks can create long delays.

The border between Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan may close for short periods. Before you go, check with the Kazakhstan Border Service (Russian) .

Driving permits

To drive in Kazakhstan, you need both:

• a valid driver's licence
• an International Driving Permit (IDP)

Get your IDP before you leave Australia.

Road travel

You're more likely to die in a car accident in Kazakhstan than in Australia. Hazards include:

• poor road conditions
• poor driving standards
• lack of street lighting
• pedestrians crossing streets with no warning
• snow and ice on roads during winter

Cars often don't give way to pedestrians on roads.

In rural areas, animals on roads are another hazard.

It may be difficult to access service stations in rural areas. Fuel shortages happen sometimes.

If you plan to drive:

• check your travel insurance covers it
• learn local traffic laws and driving practices
• beware of animals on the roads
• look out for pedestrians crossing streets without warning
• avoid travel at night, especially in rural areas

Driving or riding

Motorcycles

Check your insurance policy covers you using a motorbike, quad bike or similar vehicle.

Always wear a helmet.

Use only registered taxis and limousines. Arrange them through your hotel if you can.

Public transport

Avoid public transport.

Local buses and mini-buses have poor safety standards and maintenance.

Rail travel can be unreliable and dangerous due to petty crime.

In April 2022, the EU announced that 21 Russian owned airlines were banned from flying in EU airspace due to safety concerns. 

DFAT doesn't provide information on the safety of individual commercial airlines or flight paths. If you’re flying domestically or internationally, you should research your aviation provider.

Always get a police report when you report a crime.

Your insurer should have a 24-hour emergency number.
