The eerie mysteries that shroud the Athens Lunatic Asylum have intrigued and peaked curiosities for years. Now known as The Ridges, the Athens Lunatic Asylum operated from 1874 to 1993. The Asylum saw various patients, including civil war veterans, children, and those deemed mentally unwell.

It was meant to only house 550 patients when it opened; the Athens Lunatic Asylum surpassed nearly 2,000 patients by the 1950s. Later, small housing units were built to create small communities for patients to live in.

Walkthrough The Vibrant And Eclectic Town Of Yellow Springs

From a lively downtown scene to sipping on ice-cold brews from Yellow Springs Brewery, this is one of our favorite day trips from Cincinnati to make with or without kids. Yellow Springs, OH, has laid-back coffee shops, unusual boutiques, and plenty of delicious food.

Nature lovers come prepared to hike, as on of the top things in Yellow Springs is to get out and enjoy their parks. The John Bryan State Park offers many hiking trails, while Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve has stunning limestone gorges.

Tucked away in Alexandria, Indiana, hanging from an industrial size hook, is the World’s Largest Ball of Paint. What once started as a humble baseball now has over 26,000 layers of paint and counting.

Visitors to this Guinness Book of World Records Holding attraction can add a layer to the ever-growing ball. The attraction is free to the public; however, you must call ahead and schedule a time.

The World’s Largest Ball of Paint is at the Carmicheal home and is open by appointment only. A quick google search will yield the current phone number to contact to set up your tour.

Go Swimming at an Old Quarry in La Grange, KY

Another great day trip within two hours from Cincinnati is La Grange, KY.  Adults can cool off at Falling Rock Park .  It is an old rock quarry that is maintained solely through rainwater! Anyone over 18 can bring a pool raft, noodle, kayak, or paddleboard and relax.

While you are visiting, be sure to visit Mainstreet La Grange, one of the few places in the country where the train runs right down the middle of the road.

Hartman Rock Garden

Venture off the beaten path with a visit to the Hartman Rock Garden a spectacular collection of art made by self-taught artist Ben Hartman. One man’s legacy has become a unique Ohio roadside attraction drawing thousands of visitors annually. The garden is free to visit and is open year-round.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base

Catch The View From Rising Park

Soak in breathtaking views of Lancaster, Ohio, by climbing to the top of Rising Park’s Mount Pleasant. Arguably one of Ohio’s most spectacular views, Mount Pleasant overlooks the city of Lancaster with the surrounding foothills in the distance.

To get to the top of Mount Pleasant, visitors enter through Rising Park. A parking lot is adjacent to the trailhead, directly past the tennis courts. The climb is moderate; however, remember that you will gain 206ft in elevation in about .7 miles. It took us roughly 45 minutes round trip, but you can stay up and enjoy the view for hours.

Sayen House and Gardens

155 Hughes Drive, Hamilton

First established in 1912 by Frederick Sayen and his wife and officially opened to the public in 1991, this municipal park and botanical garden has more than 1,000 azaleas, 500 rhododendrons and 250,000 flowering bulbs, which are featured in an annual spring display. The site, which is among the most beautiful day trips in N.J., also has walking trails, gazebos and bridges and is a popular spot for wedding receptions and private parties. The garden hosts an annual Azalea Festival in May and is open year-round from dawn to dusk.

Atlantic City

Gateway National Recreation Area

America’s oldest operating lighthouse, the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, can be found in this spot operated by the National Park Service. The lighthouse, which first opened in 1764, helped guide sailors approaching New York harbor at night and became a beacon of defense during the Revolutionary War. Visitors can take guided tours and also drop by nearby Fort Hancock, a former artillery base.

Rockingham State Historic Site

Built in the early 1700s, this site served as a temporary home and headquarters for George Washington during the Revolutionary War and was where he wrote his famous Farewell Orders to the Army of the United States, announcing his retirement from military service. During tours of the farmhouse, visitors are given an in-depth understanding of life in the colonial period and each room is filled with 18th century furnishings and artifacts. The historic site also has a children’s museum.

Turtle Back Zoo

Originally opened as a showcase for animals indigenous to New Jersey, the Turtle Back Zoo now features species from every continent except Antarctica. Morristown National Historical Park

Known as the military capital of the American Revolution due to George Washington’s winter camp being located there, this park’s sites include Jockey Hollow, which features 27 miles of walking trails and reconstructed soldier huts. Visitors can learn about the soldiers’ experiences during the winter and their springtime battles with the British. The Ford Mansion, Headquarters Museum and Fort Nonsense Unit can also be found in the national park. This is a good bet for history buffs looking for fun day trips in N.J.

Paterson Museum

2 Market Street #102, Paterson

First opening in 1925, this museum’s varied collection emphasizes local archaeology, history and mineralogy and includes dyeing, winding, warping, weaving and Jacquard loom products that gave Paterson, which was once known as the “Silk City,” its reputation for silk and textiles. The museum also showcases the city’s evolution from a textile and machinery center to a pistol and submarine manufacturer. Be sure to check out the patent medicines and compounding pharmacy equipment from a local drug store, circa 1919.

Wallace House

71 Somerset Street, Somerville

Once home to Philadelphia merchant John Wallace, this eight-room Georgian style mansion was also a temporary home to General George Washington and his staff from 1778 to 1779. The property contains doors with panels in the form of a double cross, which was a common element of that time period, to keep witches out. Much of the home’s original woodwork, hardware and blue and white Dutch tiles are still intact. A farmhouse on the site that dates back to 1751 was home to the first ministers of the Dutch Reformed Church.

1112 Dukes Parkway W., Hillsborough Township

Developed by tobacco and hydropower magnate James Buchanan Duke in 1893, this 2,700-acre estate features nine lakes, 45 buildings and 35 fountains. Visitors can hike a 1.25-mile trail through a variety of habitats on the property and spot an array of wildlife. Public access to the property is by reservation only, so register for classes or activities in advance.

Barnegat Lighthouse State Park

208 Broadway, Barnegat Light

Once regarded as one of the most important change-of-course points for coastal vessels heading to and from New York along the New Jersey coastline, the lighthouse helped sailors avoid currents, sandbars and offshore shoals. Visitors can take tours, observe nesting birds on the beach or walk the Maritime Forest Trail, which is lined with black cherry, sassafras, eastern red cedar and American holly trees.

Batsto Historical Village

Hammonton Road, Hammonton

Who says day trips in N.J. can’t be educational? This village’s roots can be traced back to 1766 and the Batsto Iron Works, which produced household items and wartime supplies to the Continental Army. Tours of the site include visits to a former sawmill, gristmill, general store, small cottages where workers lived, barns, a piggery and the 32-room Batsto Mansion. The village is located within the 110-acre Wharton State Forest, which provides opportunities for camping, hiking and boating.

Renault Winery

72 Bremen Avenue, Egg Harbor City

Founded in 1864, Renault Winery is the oldest continuous commercial winemaker in the Garden State. A tour includes a trip to the Antique Glass Museum, which has a collection dating back to medieval times, as well as information on the history of the winery. Visitors can also check out the private collection of antique winemaking equipment and wine cellar, where wine is aged in giant oak and redwood casks. The tour ends at the Wine Tasting Emporium, where participants can sample wine and champagne. The winery also has a golf course and hotel.

How about the Roebling Museum in Roebling (near Trenton, a short distance from the Hamilton attractions)? Learn about the great suspension bridges, not to mention diverse workforces: https://www.roeblingmuseum.org/

Also, the Paterson Museum contains a submarine that was built in Paterson.

I’m surprised you didn’t include Patterson Great Falls, a National Historical Park in Patterson, NJ.

I’m surprised that the Great Falls of Paterson was not included in this list. It is second only to Niagara Falls.

Basto Village lost a number of historical houses due to fires due to arsonists. I don’t know if they ever had the money to rebuild any of it. Only a few buildings remain standing. Due to lack of funding, the Village is falling into disarray. That is when I was there over two years ago. I do believe they need more money than they received due to the restrictions on historical homes.

15 Fabulous Day Trips in Connecticut

Connecticut is in southwestern New England. It has a big city, fancy suburbs of New York City, a pretty coastline, and rural farmland. I did my residency in Hartford and lived just north of that area for about 5 years. Since Connecticut borders Rhode Island, I still visit often for day trips. Below are a few of my favorite Connecticut day trips.

The historic boating town of Mystic has an aquarium, cool balancing bridge, colonial seaport, and quaint downtown.

Hike to Hublein Tower, Simsbury

A 1.25-mile hike through Talcott Mountain’s woods brings you to this tower with sweeping views of Connecticut, including Hartford.

Talcott Mountain is one of my top ten New England family hikes.

West Hartford Center

If you are in the mood to spend a day shopping and eating, West Hartford is the place to be. Here you can find almost any store you can think of. My favorite Connecticut restaurant, Restaurant Bricco , is on LaSalle Road.

New Haven is the Ivy League school’s home, Yale, and the home of some delicious wood-fired pizza. There is some controversy about who has the best, but the original is at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana. There are often long lines, so it is good to show up right when they open. One of their most popular pizza is the white clam. While in town, visit the museums of Yale, such as the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Southwestern Connecticut

If you want to explore Connecticut’s rural side, try a road trip around the southwest corner of the state where you can drive past farms, go antiquing, visit wineries, and hike to waterfalls.

Connecticut Wine Trail

You can see the whole state, as well as have an amazing day visiting Connecticut’s 40 wineries, but of course, you would need a designated driver and drink safely.

A Day at Lavender Pond Farm, Killingworth

If you are in Connecticut in June or July, spend a peaceful day among the blooming, fragrant stems. The farm has chairs and games to play as well. This farm is on my list of the best flower fields around New England.

Clyde’s Cider Mill, Old Mystic

If you are visiting in the fall, be sure to join the party at Clyde’s Cider Mill, where you can see cider being pressed by a room-sized antique press and eat apple cider donuts. Right up the road, visit Whitehall Cemetery with graves dating back to the 1600s.

Sharpe Hill Winery, Pomfret

Start your day at the Lavender Hill Alpaca Farm in Voluntown. After getting your fill of these frilly-headed animals. Then take a hike around the Connecticut Audobon Society Bafflin Sanctuary. End your day with a wine tasting and dinner in Sharpe Hill’s beautiful old barn.

Lake Compounce

Devil’s Hopyard

Devil’s Hopyard is one of my favorite picnic spots in New England. On the two-mile hike, you can see a waterfall, covered bridge, and sweeping green views.

Explore the Connecticut River Valley

Take a boat ride on the river, explore Gillette Castle, take a train ride, or shop and eat in the charming town of Essex.

Visit Old Saybrook

Get a spa treatment at the Saybrook Point Resort and Spa. Walk through the Monument Park. Enjoy lunch on Main Street. A few of my favorite restaurants are the Penny Lane Pub or Liv’s Oyster Bar. Finish your day with a walk by the ocean or a peek at the Lynde Point Lighthouse.

Spend a Day at the Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme

Around the turn of the twentieth century, Florence Griswold was running a boarding house on the Lieutenant River banks drawing painters to the area. This was the Lyme Artist Colony, the beginning and hub of American Impressionism. The house is open for touring, as well as a garden and a museum housing a large collection of impressionist paintings. Be sure to leave time for lunch on the veranda overlooking the river.

Mark Twain House

This gothic-style house in Hartford is where Samuel Clements raised his family. There are three buildings to tour, including the house.

I live in Boston, these are some really great things to see in CT. I love Mystic, it’s one of my favorite towns in New England. I actually wasn’t aware if the Lavender Fields, I’m going to need to check those out some year.

Those are some great ideas for day trips. I think I should like to do them all – from the lavender to antique hunting to the wine trail. Mystic has always been intriguing to me, and those waterfalls in Devil’s Hopyard looks so scenic.

I have only done Mystic and its outdoor seaport museum in my only day in CT and I really do need to go back to the state to check out the natural beauty (or maybe the changing of the colours in the leaves in the fall). I am loving the waterfalls in Devil’s Hopyard and would defo want to check these out. One place I would like to go is Hartford for a bit of history, as the founder of the town is from a town very near to my home in Hertford, in the UK. 🙂 So there is a little bit of a connection for me, not much, but its enough for me to get myself into gear and visit CT again 🙂

That is cool that you live near our founder. I didn’t know the origin of the name Hartford.

I have never been to Connecticut and this post makes me want to spend a week just exploring the day trips. I would first explore Devil’s Hopyard. A two-mile hike isn’t too bad especially if you get views of a waterfall and bridge. I’ll have to see if it’s pet-friendly too. I’m sure my pup would enjoy this hike as well.

This is a part of the US I’d really like to explore more! I didn’t know that Connecticut had a winery scene but checking out some of them sounds like a lot of fun! Mystic also looks like an interesting little town. I checked out your other post and the drawbridge does look unique with those concrete slabs!

There is also. Harkness park in Waterford Connecticut. it’s a mansion that used to Belong to a rich family. there is Alot to see. it’s surrounded by the ocean. flower gardens . it’s beautiful. Look it up!

Sometimes you don’t want to wait for a vacation to get out of town for a bit! That’s where our list of day trips from Cincinnati comes in!

It can be hard to get the change of scenery your soul needs between work, busy, schedules, and travel restrictions. Luckily, Cincinnati is surrounded by other exciting cities, small towns, parks, and hidden gems just waiting to be explored.

From nature and art to shopping and museums, there are some fun Cincinnati day trips just waiting for you! You can find all kinds of adventure within 150 miles of Cincinnati. That’s less than one tank of gas!

Day Trips From Cincinnati:

• Indianapolis, Indiana

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 109 miles, approx. 1.75 hour drive

When you want to get away from it all but don’t have time to go far, Indianapolis is a great place to visit. Indy is the capital of Indiana and it’s also the largest city in the state. Indianapolis may be known as home to the Indianapolis Speedway but there’s so much more to discover!

Learn something new at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis . Kids (and their grownups) can explore DinoSphere, the massive dinosaur exhibit; immerse in Greek culture at Take Me There: Greece; hear the stories of three powerful kids – Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White; and much more!

See the diverse wildlife at the Indianapolis Zoo – including orangutans, elephants, tigers, dolphins, and the country’s largest Shark touch pool!

Take a tour of Lucas Oil Stadium , home of the Indianapolis Colts.

See world-renowned works of art at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, visit the historic Lilly House, and explore the 100-acre Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park – all located on the campus of Newfields: A Place for Nature & the Arts .

• Louisville, Kentucky

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 100 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

Another city that sits upon the banks of the Ohio River is nearby Louisville, Kentucky. The largest city in the state of Kentucky, this city is often linked to horse racing as it’s the home of Churchill Downs.

Louisville is home to Bourbon Country as well with stops along Kentucky’s famous Bourbon Trail. Bourbon lovers can try out some local favorites at Stitzel Weller Distillery , Rabbit Hole , and Michter’s Distillery .

Experience the internationally renowned Churchill Downs . Even when it’s not Kentucky Derby season, there are plenty of other opportunities to see a live race. And don’t miss the Kentucky Derby Museum!

All ages will love the Louisville Zoo . Over 1,100 animals currently call the zoo home, and exhibits include: Africa, Australia, Glacier Run, HerpAquarium, Islands, and South America.

Reds fans will want to “swing” by the Louisville Slugger Museum and learn all about how this iconic baseball hat has helped shape one of America’s favorite games.

• Yellow Springs, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 68 miles, approx. 1.25 hour drive

What’s not to love about Yellow Springs, Ohio – nicknamed “Everyone’s Favorite Place”? You can enjoy some shopping and great food in the downtown area and then drive just a few miles to some of the best hiking areas in Ohio.

Downtown Yellow Springs is packed with an eccentric assortment of restaurants, shopping, and galleries.

Glen Helen Nature Preserve is home to the town’s namesake, the Yellow Spring. Hit the trails to explore the area’s natural beauty and see a waterfall (or two!).

Hike, bike, canoe, fish, and camp at John Bryan State Park . You won’t want to miss the limestone gorge and scenic river views!

Grab some homemade ice cream and see a real working farm at Young’s Jersey Dairy . Over the years, they’ve also added batting cages, mini golf, and the Kiddie Corral for more family fun.

Take a bike ride or walk along th e Little Miami Scenic Trail . This 78-mile shaded trail runs nearby downtown Yellow Springs and John Bryan State Park.

• Hocking Hills, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 135 miles, approx. 2.25 hour drive

Hocking Hills is an Ohio State Park. Located in southeast Ohio, this area is popular in all four seasons. From hiking to camping to overnight cabin stays, put this one on your must-do list!

Be sure to make a stop at the park’s nature center and become an Ohio Explorer with the New Ohio State Parks Passport!

Take a zipline tour with Hocking Hills Canopy Tour s to get an adventurous view of the area’s beautiful forests.

Hike to the area’s scenic waterfalls . Reach the Upper Falls by taking the Old Man’s Cave trail. Take the Cedar Falls trail to see (can you guess?)… Cedar Falls! Ash Cave is a unique waterfall that you can view from 360° by taking the aptly named Ash Cave trail.

Rappel and rock climb with High Rock Adventures . They also offer guided Ecotours where you can take a nature hike and learn all about the area’s history, plants, and animals.

Enjoy locally crafted wine at family-owned Hocking Hills Winery .

• Frankfort, Kentucky

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 80 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

Here’s a day trip that took me by surprise! The town of Frankfort is so charming! Take a tour of the Kentucky State Capitol Building (in the image above). Be sure to take advantage of the self guided tour using the building’s Walking Tour brochure, and be sure not to miss the rotunda murals. There’s a nod to Cincinnati included there!

Right outside of Frankfort, you’ll find some popular spots along the Bourbon Trail: Buffalo Trace (love that place!), Four Roses Bourbon, Woodford Reserve, and Wild Turkey.

Daniel Boone is said to be buried at the nearby Frankfort Cemetery, along with his wife Rebecca. His final resting place provides a lovely view of the area.

Don’t miss the downtown area (so charming). If you’d like to stay over for the night, I can recommend the bed and breakfast in Frankfort – The Meeting House . Our room was wonderful, the hosts were super friendly, and the food was amazing!

• Lexington, Kentucky

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 83 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

Just a few hours south of Cincinnati and right off I-75, Lexington is the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass region. The city is best known for its beautiful rolling hills, fertile soil, and, of course, its horse farms.

Lexington is known as the Horse Capital of the World, so a visit almost wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Keeneland . See a live race, take a tour of the property, or grab dinner at the Keeneland Track Kitchen – or try them all!

Maybe a Zipline Canopy Tour through the Boone Creek Gorge is more your style? See the gorge from a new perspective via six zip lines, three sky bridges, a rappel, a spiral, and a floating staircase. The tour is perfect for 2-10 people and lasts 2.5 hours.

Visit Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. for an authentic taste of the Bourbon Trail. Or, take a guided tour with Bourbon in the Bluegrass to tour and visit three nearby distilleries: Woodford Reserve Distillery, Historic Buffalo Trace Distillery, and Four Roses Distillery.

Grab a beer at one of our favorite Kentucky breweries: West Sixth Brewing . Enjoy a brew straight from the source and check out the building’s 100 year history, which was originally home to the Rainbo Bread Factory. The brewery has a huge taproom, a section full of picnic tables, and a few tables along the street.

• Columbus, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 107 miles, approx. 1.5 hour drive

We couldn’t have a day trips post without featuring the capital of Ohio, “the heart of it all” – Columbus, Ohio. There’s so much to see and do in this city – so much so that we wrote an entire article just on what to see and do in Columbus .

Spend hours exploring the gardens at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens . Beautiful views are at every turn, between 400+ plant species, the Chihuly Collection of glass artwork, and the Light Raiment II light art installation at the Palm House.

With 300+ stores and over 30 million visitors each year, the Easton Town Center is one of the midwest’s premier shopping destinations. Beyond shopping, the campus is also home to Ohio’s largest movie theater, parks, town squares, dining destinations, and a comedy club.

Visit the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium , home to 130+ animals from around the world! Exhibits include Asia Quest, Expedition Congo, Heart of Africa, North America, Shores, and Voyage to Australia and the Islands.

Every Saturday from June to October (excluding July 4), Ohio farmers sell their freshly-picked produce at the North Market Farmer’s Market . Grab a bite to eat, shop local vendors, or pick up some produce to go at the area’s oldest and largest market of its kind.

Visit COSI , the “hands-on science museum and planetarium”. Exhibits are set up to make kids (and adults!) feel like they are actually experiencing the things they are learning about: see giant dinosaur skeletons, take a ride in a space capsule, drive an underwater ROV, and more!

• Dayton, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 55 miles, approx. 1 hour drive

Located less than an hour away, Dayton is definitely day trip worthy. Enjoy some great food at the Oregon District, visit a musuem, take a hike… and don’t overlook nearby Yellow Springs too (see info about that above).

Visit the world’s largest aviation museum: the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force . Military history and aviation buffs can spend hours exploring the displays of 360 aerospace vehicles and missiles, thousands of historical items, and the story of Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Learn about Dayton’s history and its impact on the world (hint: Orville Wright was born in Dayton!) at Carillon Historical Park .

Explore Cox Arboretum . Between a butterfly house, shrub garden, walking trails, a children’s maze and more – these lush gardens will make you forget you’re within an hour’s drive of two major cities.

With over 1,000 works of art, you can spend all day admiring the Dayton Art Institute ‘s vast collection of art form all over the world – some dating back 5,000 years!

Kids will love spending the day at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery . With a heavy focus on hands-on experiences, kids can pretend play at the Explorers Crossing, create at the Strictly Briks building station, experience ocean life first hand at the Tidal Pool, spend some time in the MeadWestvaco treehouse, and more!

• Rabbit Hash, Kentucky

From downtown Cincinnati: 30 miles, ~45 minute drive

Here’s a trip that everyone needs to make at least once – Rabbit Hash!

Rabbit Hash is pretty tiny, but the Rabbit Hash General Stor e is definitely worth the drive! Started in 1831, this hidden gem draws visitors from far and wide and has survived three major floods. Shop its famous antiques, Bybee pottery, handmade goods from Berea College, and more.

• Hoosier National Forest, Indiana

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 144 miles, approx. 2.25 hour drive

Spanning across 9 counties in southern Indiana, this 200,000+ acre forest is the perfect outdoor escape from the city and suburbs. There’s TONS to do there, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

• Immerse yourself in nature in the forest’s trail systems and wilderness areas
• Learn about the area’s human history by visiting the Lick Creek African American Settlement (1815-1900), the Rickenbaugh House , and Mano Point (which was once a prehistoric village)
• Spend the day navigating the Orienteering area
• Fish at Sundance Lake
• Go waterfalling at Hemlock Cliffs
• Hueston Woods, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 47 miles, approx. 1 hour drive

Hueston Woods isn’t too far from Cincinnati, but offers a day full of outdoor adventure:

• Hike on the park’s 12 trails, including the Handicap Accessible Sugar Bush Trail
• Fish, swim, and boat at Acton Lake
• Stay overnight at the Lodge or the park’s campground
• Play a round of golf at the Hueston Woods Golf Course
• Take a ride on 18 miles of mountain bike trails
• Search for fossils and geocaches
• Shoot some arrows at the archery range
• And much more!
• Caesar Creek State Park, Ohio

Distance from downtown Cincinnati: 44 miles, approx. 1 hour drive

Caesar Creek State Park is another park that’s close enough to Cincinnati to make it an easy day trip, but far enough way to feel like you’re getting out of town:

• Take a swim or lounge in the sand at the 1,300 square foot public beach
• Hit the trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding
• Shoot arrows at targets 10-40 feet away at the Archery Range
• Go fishing on over 40 miles of shoreline
• Take your boat out on the 2,830 acre lake, including 5 launch ramps
• Stay overnight at the park’s campground

These 50 Perfect Maryland Day Trip ideas are really a great way to explore The Old Line State. There are so many ways to have fun in Maryland. These are all excellent ideas!

The State of Maryland really is America in Miniature. Maryland is a rather small state but wow, it’s jam-packed with fun things to do! One day you can visit a world class museum and the next you could be hiking the Appalachian Trail. There are mountain regions, more beaches than you could ever hope to visit, and a state that is full of historical significance. 

So, where should you even start? Well, I have picked out 50 perfect Maryland day trip ideas for you. These are all places we have visited and loved. And I think you will love these places too! Happy exploring!

1. Swallow Falls State Park

This is one of the best, if not the best state park in Maryland. If you take the very kid friendly Canyon Trail you can hit not one, but 4 gorgeous waterfalls in one hike!  | Website

6. Weverton Cliffs

If you are up for a challenge you will definitely be rewarded. This 1.5 mile each way hike brings you to one of the best overlooks in Maryland! | Website

7. Greenbrier State Park

A great historic park to see amazing views of the Potomac. Take a hike on one of the kid friendly trails, and then pay a visit to the National Colonial Farm and say hi to all the animals! This sprawling state park has numerous areas to explore. Our favorite is the Avalon/Orange Grove area. Park near the swinging bridge to take a stroll (or bike ride) along the river on the Grist Mill Trail. 29. Kilgore Falls

This waterfall is so lovely it was featured in Tuck Everlasting. Bring your water shoes because one you hike the short distance to the falls, you will want to walk across the river to the other side, where you can get super close to the bottom and top of the falls! | Website

30. Ladew Topiary Gardens

You kind of have to see these gardens to believe them. The topiaries are really so cool.. Crazy what the gardeners do to form the bushes into creatures! The best part though (in my opinion) are the flowers and gardens themselves. There are so many fanciful gardens… you feel like the characters in A Secret Garden. In the springtime you can delight in azaleas, tulips, and more! | Website

31. Havre de Grace Promenade

Park at either end of the promenade and walk along the water. Check out the Concord Pt. Lighthouse and your kids will definitely want to burn energy at the Millard-Tydings Park playground. It’s a super fun playground with loads of great play features! | Website

Officially the headquarters of Gunpowder Falls State Park, Jerusalem Mill routinely has tours and activities on their grounds. It’s a living history museum. Bring your hiking shoes and swimsuits though. You can plug into trails for Lower Gunpowder Falls from here. Speaking of swimming, there is hardly anything more Maryland iconic than a beach day at Sandy Point State Park. Splash and play on the beach under the watchful eye of the Bay Bridge. | Website

If you haven’t taken your kids to Port Discovery yet, you must take them asap! Port Discovery is one of the best children’s museums in the nation and for good reason. 36. Maryland Zoo in Baltimore

I have a love affair with the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. This zoo is so accessible and fun for kids, especially younger kids. You can get really close to the animals and even feed the giraffes. There are numerous play features, and a lovely petting farm. | Maryland Zoo Guide!

37. Maryland Science Center

Anchoring the Inner Harbor, the Maryland Science Center is basically a bonus Children’s Museum.. But one that appeals to kids from age 0-99. Every time we visit all the kids have a blast, regardless of age. There are exhibits that cater to all ages. This unassuming local park in Middle River is the best hidden treasure we have found. Go down to the river and climb all over the rocks and boulders. You and your kids will have a blast exploring! | Website

40. Gunpowder Falls State Park Hammerman Area

Like Patapsco Valley State Park, Gunpowder Falls State Park has loads of areas to explore. If you want to play on a beach though, the Hammerman Area is where you want to go! | Website

41. Ft. Howard Park

This historical park is really fun and interesting. It’s on the water so that’s fantastic. There is a nice walking/biking path and two playgrounds. The super fun draw though are the battle emplacement ruins you can still explore. Very cool.. If not a little spooky. | Website

A fantastic Maryland day trip idea would be to combine a visit here with North Point State Park and Cromwell Valley Park.

42. Calvert Cliffs State Park

When you think of shark teeth hunting in Maryland, Calvert Cliffs State Park is probably at the top of your must-visit places. The walk is a little long for younger kids (3 miles round trip), but very flat and easy, with tons of interesting places to explore along the way. The small beach is the piece de resistance though. Bring buckets, shovels, and strainers and try to see if you can find a megalodon tooth! | Website

43. Annmarie Sculpture Garden

The Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center is totally awesome! Yes, I am gushing… it is that great. I wish we lived closer to Lusby, MD so we could visit more often. And don’t let the fact that it is a ‘sculpture garden’ dissuade you. This lovely garden is full of fun, whimsical, and downright enchanting activities for kids. 44. Historic St. Mary’s City

️Historic St Mary’s City is a living history museum.. think Williamsburg but on a smaller scale. St Mary’s City used to be the capital of Maryland and the museum offers hands on glimpses into the 17th century life of area residents. Throughout the city there were demonstrators and docents to explain what life would have been like and offer hands on activities. This is a really unique and totally fun place to visit! | Website

A great Maryland day trip would be to combine a trip here with some fun in the sun at Point Lookout State Park.

45. Point Lookout State Park

Located and the tippy tip of Southern Maryland, Point Lookout stood vigil during the Civil War. Now you can spend a lovely day playing in the sand and cooling off in the water. | Website

46. Elk Neck State Park

Elk Neck State Park in North East, MD is a treasure. The most iconic part of the park is the Turkey Point Lighthouse. The Turkey Point Lighthouse trail is a 1.9 mile loop trail (or you could do out and back directly from the lighthouse). If you do the loop trail, you will find numerous waterfront picnic and small beach areas. It is really such a lovely place to spend the day! | Website

47. Tuckahoe State Park

This great state park is so much fun for both day trips and weekend trips! There are multiple areas to explore. The VisitorCenter has a great aviary, supplies for the disc golf course, and trailheads for over 20 miles of fun trails! 

At Tuckahoe Lake you can rent kayaks and canoes, fish, and kids will absolutely love the recycled tire playground! In the Campfire Loop area there are nature trails and another great playground with a fantastic slide! 49. Betterton Beach

Betterton, MD is a fantastic place to spend a Maryland day trip– especially if you have kids! The beach is amazing and doesn’t have jellyfish! There is a great community park with a fun playground. And just a short drive away you can pick fruit and get a scoop of homemade ice cream at Lockbriar Farms!

50. Harriett Tubman Visitor Center and Byway

This important museum and visitor center is an excellent tribute to a national hero and civil rights legend. Bring your kids and start a conversation about racism, slavery, and equality. The exhibits are really well done and educational for kids and adults.

The mural pictured below is actually not a part of the visitor center. It’s located on the side of the Harriet Tubman Museum & Educational Center and stop #5 on the Tubman Byway road trip! FAQ about Maryland Day Trips

That depends on what you would like to do and if you are with kids or adults only. On a family trip our top picks are the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland Science Center and Rash Field, or the National Aquarium. With or without kids ideas include the USS Constellation, the American Visionary Art Museum, and Ft. McHenry. For an adults only trip, check out Fells Point or Hampden.

The Deep Creek area in Garrett County, MD is between 3-4 hours from Baltimore, MD.

That depends on the traffic on the Bay Bridge. With no traffic you can reach Ocean City in 2-3 hours. However, with summer, weekend, or holiday traffic– plan to add at least 1 hour to your trip.

If you are looking for an activity that is unique to Ohio, then consider heading to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

It is one of the most incredible things to do in Ohio because it is the only home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The museum is located in downtown Cleveland, right by Lake Erie.

Inside the massive 55,000 square foot building, you’ll find several levels of exhibits dedicated to the history of Rock and Roll.

The I.M. Pei-designed building also houses the offices of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and it’s where the artists who are inducted every year are decided on.

You’ll also find souvenir shops and a cafe, which means you can easily spend the entire day exploring this super-unique museum in Ohio.

Explore The Ohio Caverns

The Ohio Caverns are definitely one of the best hidden gems of the Midwest .

Depending on the time of the year, the caverns are open for tours at different times.

Visit Chateau Laroche

When you think of Ohio, castles probably don’t come to mind.

But they should!

Ohio is home to several castles , and one of those is Chateau Laroche.

Chateau Laroche is often called Loveland Castle by locals, simply because you can find it in the town of Loveland, Ohio.

The Chateau is a full-size replica of a European castle and features a mishmash of different architectural styles from different European countries.

You will see influences from English, French, and German architectural styles as well as four turrets, each of which has a different style.

The castle is now a museum, where you can tour the inside as well as the grounds, and learn about its eccentric builder.

Explore The German Village In Columbus

Visit The Pro Football Hall Of Fame In Canton

The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton Ohio.

Inside, you’ll find tons of exhibits all relating to American football.

It’s no surprise that football fans travel from all over the world to spend the day exploring this really unique museum experience.

There are interactive exhibits and fascinating tours that teach you all about the history of football and some of its most iconic players.

You will even find exhibits dedicated to each Pro Football team, so you will be able to admire memorabilia from your favorite team.

Step Into History At The National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center

You can find the National Underground Rail Road Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

It is specifically located along the banks of the Ohio River because the Ohio River used to be a natural divider between ‘free’ and ‘slave’ states.

The ‘free’ states were those above the Ohio River and the ‘slave’ states were those below the Ohio River.

So it was naturally one of the best crossing points for enslaved peoples looking to escape.

Now you can learn about the history of the Underground Rail Road in Ohio at the center.

The center highlights stories of those who helped enslaved peoples escape to Ohio as well as the stories of those who managed to find freedom in Ohio.

It is an incredibly moving museum.

While we believe that slavery ended in America with the end of the Civil War, that is sadly not the case.

Slavery continues to occur every day in the form of human trafficking, even in America.

Alongside the exhibits about the Underground Rail Road, you’ll also find exhibits that highlight and inform visitors about the modern-day slave trade.

Admire The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves

The Kelleys Island Glacial Grooves are an Ohio natural wonder on Kelleys Island.

It is an island just off the coast of Lake Erie near Sandusky.

Kelleys Island is super tiny and you can only reach it via ferry.

So keep that in mind when you are planning this Ohio day trip adventure.

To get around the island you will need to walk.

There are no cars permitted, but at only four miles by two miles, that probably will not be a problem.

You can see a few things on the tiny island, but the most popular is the glacial grooves.

The grooves were created by a glacier slowly sliding on the landscape and carving the grooves over time.

While you explore the park you’ll find gorgeous waterfalls , scenic hiking trails , and unique rock formations dotted throughout the lush forest landscape.

The area around the state park is also full of fun activities. There are shops, restaurants, and historic museums.

If you are looking to escape to the great outdoors for one of your next day trips in Ohio, then you can’t go wrong with a day spent at Hocking Hills State Park.

Explore Ashtabula Beaches And Parks

Ashtabula is an adorable small town, probably best known for its wonderful Lakeshore Park.

The Lakeshore Park is located on the shores of Lake Erie and is about 54 acres of trails, sandy shores, and park area.

What makes the park and the beaches of Ashtabula so popular are actually a few different things.

The beaches are very pretty, and Lakeshore Park is full of amenities.

There are grassy areas where you can picnic or relax and play some horseshoe, a playground for kids, volleyball courts, pavilions, and even a public boat dock.

For those near Columbus, Westerville is just a short 20-minute drive away.

You can stroll through the Sharon Woods Metro Park or the Inniswood Metro Garden if you want to enjoy some beautiful small-town landscapes.

For those that are interested in history, Westerville is a cool place to visit.

A fun fact about the town is that it was called ‘The Dry Capital of the World’ because it continued the prohibition of alcohol long after the US rolled back prohibition laws.

One day you will be ready to roam again — really roam across borders, oceans and continents. But for now, let’s start small.

Here, as a mostly homebound school year resumes and we enter our seventh month of pandemic-altered existence, are seven day-trip ideas within a several-hour drive of Los Angeles, some with overnight options, a few with beaches.

Just because they’re open now doesn’t mean you have to visit today. In fact, state officials still urge Californians to avoid nonessential trips. But when you’re ready, these places are too.

No matter where you go, health experts urge you to wear a mask unless you’re eating or in the water. And keep a distance from strangers.

At Torrey Pines State Beach, swim, fish, walk the sand or sunbathe. The beach is 4½ miles long, between northern La Jolla and southern Del Mar, and lined by red-dirt cliffs and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (still closed). For a memorable overview of nearby beach, cliffs and sea, park at the Torrey Pines Gliderport, watch paragliders take off, get a sandwich at the Cliffhanger Cafe and sit at one of the outdoor picnic tables.

Plenty of art and architecture await just east of the glider port on the 1,200-acre UC San Diego campus. You can take a self-guided tour among the works of art at the Stuart Collection and and check out the striking academic architecture, including the otherworldly Geisel Library (interior closed) and the crooked little house atop the engineering building.

In La Jolla, you can stroll past the shops, galleries and restaurants on Prospect Street and Girard Avenue. Or go tide-pooling or picnicking along Coast Boulevard near Children’s Pool Beach. There’s also pleasant strolling along the Coast Walk Trail near Cave Street.

Or you could kayak around La Jolla Shores or the cliffs and caves near La Jolla Cove. Co-owner Michael Luscomb said La Jolla Kayak ([858] 459-1114, lajollakayak.com ) resumed rentals in late May, tours in early June. “We’re very strong on weekends,” he said.

For coffee or a snack, head to Pannikin (outdoor seating) at 7467 Girard Avenue. For a fancy dinner, you might try George’s at the Cove, a longtime Prospect Street mainstay whose Level 2 and Ocean Terrace dining areas are open.

Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach, with its gorgeous stretch of sand, cliffs and rockscapes, once was an artists colony. Now it’s more of a gallerists colony but undeniably pleasant to visit.

Beyond Main Beach (and its landmark blue-and-white lifeguard tower) in downtown Laguna, a path leads from Treasure Island Park (just south of the Montage Laguna Beach resort) to Treasure Island Beach (good for families, tide-pooling and snorkeling). You might not be ready to spend $1,000 for a night at the Montage, but you might consider breakfast, lunch or dinner on the patio at the resort’s Mosaic Bar & Grill . Downtown, there’s plenty of window-shopping among the galleries and shops. And there are three state parks in the area.

Crystal Cove State Park, which stretches from Laguna Beach to Newport Beach, has 3.2 miles of beach, a campground, the Beachcomber Cafe (where you’re invited to order by phone rather than touching a menu) and the Crystal Cove Shake Shack at 7703 East Coast Highway (which, believe it or not, has no website). Before visiting, check the beach website at crystalcovestatepark.org for updates.

South Bay beaches

Wake up early, bring your bike or rent one and ride the Strand, a paved 22-mile beachfront route that spans Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach.

Officially, it’s the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, 14 feet wide and shared by cyclists, skaters, pedestrians and wheelchair users. It can take you far north of the South Bay, through Venice Beach and Santa Monica to Will Rogers State Beach in Pacific Palisades. The southern endpoint is Torrance County Beach. It’s always busy, so it’s best to try this early in the day, preferably a weekday.

Bike-rental options include Hermosa Cyclery ([310] 374-7816, hermosacyclery.com ) in Hermosa Beach and Marina Bike Rentals ([310] 318-2453, marinabikerentals.com ) in Redondo Beach.

An alternative is to pick one or two piers — Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo each have one — and build a walk. If you’re new to the South Bay, Manhattan Beach is the priciest of these places, Hermosa is more casual and rowdy, and the Redondo Pier and King Harbor Marina are often more diverse.

Need a cool snack? The Manhattan Beach Creamery at 1120 Manhattan Beach Avenue has been a favorite for years.

Palos Verdes Peninsula

Start in Redondo Beach and follow Palos Verdes Drive as it loops around the dramatic peninsula to San Pedro. Stop at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center. Its interior was closed as of Sept. 15, but the grounds are accessible and you can walk along the bluffs. About 2½ miles east, past Terranea Resort (which reopened in June) and across the street from Wayfarers Chapel (visitor center closed), you can walk the pebbly shores and bluffs of Abalone Cove Park in Rancho Palos Verdes (parts of the beach are closed).

End in San Pedro, where you can walk to the Korean Friendship Bell in Angels Gate Park, with wraparound views on a clear day. Or walk the coastal side of the road ( Point Fermin Park ) to see the vintage lighthouse and rocky cliffs. Keep a lookout for brown pelicans, which often fly at eye level. There are pullouts throughout the drive where you can pause to enjoy the view.

For a bite, try Nelson’s, the scenic patio restaurant, at Terranea (walk-in customers are OK).

Malibu and Topanga

Head up Pacific Coast Highway, enjoy some beach time, then head back through Topanga Canyon. Or vice versa. On this itinerary, you’ll see all sorts of beach scenery and canyon greenery. You might want to linger on the Malibu Pier, where the Malibu Farm restaurant and cafe serve breakfast, lunch and dinner alfresco. The restaurant takes reservations and also serves early dinner; the cafe is first come, first served. You might hike in Malibu Creek State Park (parking is limited; Rock Pool and Century Lake are closed). Or you could enjoy a lazy lunch and swim at Paradise Cove, a selfie-ready nook on the sand that humbly calls itself “the best beach in the world.”

In Topanga Canyon, follow winding two-lane Topanga Canyon Boulevard through country scenes, passing quirky homes, businesses and landmarks with hippie overtones. About 4 miles up Old Topanga Road from the boulevard you’ll find the Los Angeles Horseback Riding ranch ( losangeleshorsebackriding.com ; $100 for an hour).

Santa Barbara and Carpinteria

Start at Santa Barbara’s Stearns Wharf and get some sea breeze in your hair. Then peruse lower State Street’s shops and restaurants, especially the stretch from Haley to Sola streets, where local leaders recently banned cars to create an eight-block promenade.

Old Mission Santa Barbara tours and museum are still closed, but the nearby Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. The Santa Barbara Zoo is open; advance reservations are required.

South of town, take lovely, two-lane Foothill Road (California 192) between Santa Barbara and Carpinteria. There you can stop and meander Linden Avenue, which ends at a beach with lots of sand and gentle waves. Get breakfast or lunch on the patio at Esau’s Café (507 Linden Ave.; [805] 684-1070, esauscafe.com ; call to check days and hours), where the surfer vibes are thick. Or grab a burger at the Spot (389 Linden Ave.; [805] 684-6311), which has a rustic patio and food to go.

Coachella Valley

It will be about a thousand degrees here, which explains why you’ll find lots of room. At dawn or dusk, hike in one of the Indian Canyons — Palm Canyon is the most popular — or dawdle in the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in Palm Desert, with admission by timed ticket. Prowl Palm Canyon Drive, the main drag through Palm Springs, and consider a meal at festive Las Casuelas Terraza (222 S. Palm Canyon Drive; [760] 325-2794), which dates to 1958.

To get the flavor of the valley, you might need a date shake. If so, consider Hadley Fruit Orchards in Cabazon or Shields Date Garden in Indio, which is surrounded by date palms. The Shields shop and restaurant are open (patio dining only). The bad news is that its theater, which has been screening “The Romance & Sex Life of the Date” since 1953, is now closed. The good news is that the film, all 17 minutes of it, is now viewable on the Shields website and YouTube .

First Monday Trade Days, Canton

Held on the first Monday of each month and having the title as the largest flea market in the world, the legendary Texas swap meet is one of the most popular venues to visit while in North Texas. 

While it is perfect for a day trip, the market is large enough to take up several days to see all it has to offer.

Lake Texoma

This lake is so large that they had to name it after two different states!

Lake Texoma is a popular destination in North Texas or Southern Oklahoma, depending on how you look at it.

Fort Worth Stockyards

Take a trip back in time into the old west when cattle were king, and the stockyards thrived on sale. 

Even today, you can witness a cattle drive twice a day at the stockyards and enjoy a gunfight reenacted, just like you might have seen decades ago.

Texas State Railroad, Palestine

Do you love historic trains? Ever wanted to ride on one?

If so, you can have your chance at the Texas State Railroad in Palestine, Texas. 

Here, in the Piney Woods of East Texas, the old steam locomotives still run, and you can be a part of it. 

Book an open car, a dome car, or even a caboose for a 2 ½ hour journey through the pines of East Texas. 

This day trip is absolutely perfect as an outing for the whole family. 

Caddo Mounds State Historic Site

Deep in the East Texas forest, we find the Caddo Mounds State Historic Site.

Located between Crockett and Nacogdoches, Texas, the Caddo Mounds is a place to visit the past. 

Set amongst the pines and near the Neches River, the ritual dirt mounds of the site’s namesake were long abandoned when the Caddo people were forced to move east into Louisiana territory. 

Amongst the ancient mounds now stands a museum on the history of the Caddo people in the area and their way of life. 

Wonderful West Texas Day Trips

Trans-pecos festival of music.

This annual music fest takes place in one of West Texas’ favorite and eclectic towns. 

Each year the town of Marfa celebrates the Trans-Pecos Festival of Music.

Although this can go on for more than one day, it also makes for an awesome day trip of live music. 

Book a place to stay early, though, because finding a bed in Marfa during the festival can be difficult. 

Balmorhea State Park

Part ancient water source and part modern-day swimming pool, Balmorhea State Park is a natural wonder of West Texas. 

To cool off from the summer desert heat, take a drive to this spring-fed marvel and take a dip with fish and other wildlife in this crystal clear, cool water. 

The park’s green grass around the water hole has plenty of room for a shady picnic when swimming turns to hunger.

Monahans State Park

If you like the outdoors and don’t mind a bit of sand in your shoes, then Monahans State Park makes for an exciting day trip in Texas. 

Monahans is the Texas version of what we think the Sahara looks like with its rolling sand dunes. 

Spend the day surfing down the dunes and enjoy a picnic lunch for a break at this unique West Texas state park .

Sonora Caverns 

A few miles off of Interstate 10, we find the Sonora Caverns, widely considered one of the most beautiful caves in Texas .

Privately owned, these underground trails have developed over millions of years. 

Take a tour through the caverns and see the incredible geology that forms around us through the interaction of rock and water.

Be prepared for total darkness like you’ve never seen before when your guide turns out the lights in a demonstration of total blackness. 

After your venture under the earth, take time to browse the large gift shop that certainly has a souvenir for you to take home. 

Stunning Day Trips in South Texas

Corpus christi.

What could be better than to visit the statue of the queen of Tejano music? All the fun that surrounds it of course!

Everyday trip to Corpus Christi should add a visit to the statue of Selena (Mirador de la Flor). 

That’s only to start the fun. After your statue pilgrimage, enjoy a full day of shopping, eating, and relaxing on one of the many beaches in Corpus Christi . 

As the sun goes down, the nightlife begins. Try your dancing skills with the Texas two-step or enjoy some drinks overlooking the water.

Whatever your choice, you’ll find plenty to do on your TX day trip to Corpus Christi. 

South Padre Island

Keeping with the ocean vibe, our next day trip is an adventure to South Padre Island .

Although there are several seaside places to visit in the state, South Padre is our version of clear water paradise.

Spend the day at the beach, eating some great seafood, and for a memorable close to the evening, go horseback riding on the beach at sunset.

Cool Texas Day Trips in the Panhandle

Palo duro canyon state park.

The Texas version of the Grand Canyon happens to be located in the panhandle of the state, just outside of Amarillo and not far from Route 66 . 

With over 120 miles of area and wilderness, Palo Duro Canyon is one of the absolute best day trips in Texas for those visiting the Panhandle.

Take in one of the many trails for hiking the canyon (especially the hike to the Lighthouse !), or bring your mountain bike for a spin. 

Caprock Canyons State Park

When you feel the need to hang out with the state’s wild animals, take a day trip to Caprock Canyons State Park. 

One of the park’s main attractions is the bats and bison that make the area their home. 

Texas has the world’s largest bat population, and this state park offers the time to spend with them.

The bison, of course, is a throwback to yesteryear when millions of them roamed the plains of Texas and the U.S. 

Classic Central Texas Day Trips

One of the most beautiful places to visit in the Hill Country, not to mention one of the most popular day trips in Texas, is the famous Hamilton Pool located in Dripping Springs .

If you’ve never heard of it, it’s a clear water grotto fed by a waterfall from above. 

This special place is hidden and only accessible by a short but rocky hike down and into the grotto where its year-round cold waters welcome visitors for a swim. 

Be sure to plan ahead and make a reservation before visiting, as the available spots book up weeks in advance.

Fredericksburg

Not too far outside the city of Austin, you’ll find the delightful town of Fredericksburg, Texas.

Fredericksburg is known for its German heritage (and food), its beautiful Hill Country setting, its proximity to Enchanted Rock , and its many, many wineries . 

The perfect day trip to Fredericksburg is bound to involve a little bit of everything–be sure to stroll Main Street, pay a visit to a winery, enjoy some German food, and check out the surrounding area.

During bluebonnet season, Willow Loop Road is a must-visit, and for those who want to seek out a Texas legend, nearby Luckenbach is well worth a visit!

Inks Lake State Park

Texas has some of the best state parks in the country, and boy, do we have a ton of them. There are not many areas of the state that don’t offer a park nearby. 

For a nice day trip for the family, take a drive to Inks Lake in the Highland Lakes area of the Hill Country.

This lake has clear water and plenty of space for spreading out a picnic. 

Try your luck at fishing off one of the lake’s piers, or rent a paddleboat and kayak for a self-guided tour (be sure to seek if you can spot one of the lake’s waterfalls from the water!).

If getting on the water is not your thing, there are plenty of trails to explore around the lake and even a bird blind set up for the bird watchers in your family. 

Jacob’s Well

Speaking of cool and clear waters, Jacob’s Well is one of the most popular–and mysterious– swimming holes in Texas .

Located near Wimberley, Texas, the well has been welcoming swimmers to its natural beauty for decades. 

Jacob’s Well is an artesian spring that is located in the second-largest submerged cave in Texas.

At 140 feet deep, it’s quite mesmerizing, and plunging into its icy waters is incredibly refreshing on a hot day.

Like several of the most popular day trips in Texas, you’ll need to plan ahead to visit Jacob’s Well: reservations to swim in it during the summer sell out weeks in advance.

If you only want to take a short stroll to admire it from above, though, no reservation is needed.

River Tubing in New Braunfels

Yes, we saved the ultimate in Texas day trip for last.

Although you can make a full weekend out of this summer tradition, for most, a single day is enough to wear even the most adventurous person out. 

The Guadalupe River in New Braunfels is home to one of the most fun activities we have in Texas, river-tubing. 

River tubing in Texas is quite simple. Rent a tube for you and one for your ice chest full of your favorite beverages and float down the river until the sun bakes you to a crisp (did I mention you need sunscreen)? 

And don’t worry about being alone during your float; each day, hundreds of others will be doing the same and enjoying this wonderful river.

If the river itself is not to your liking, visit the Schlitterbahn, a New Braunfels water playground with slides and other fun water adventures.

I couldn’t even count the amount of days out in London you could possibly have – that city is full of fun!

Of course there are the obvious London tourist attractions, like South Bank and Oxford Street, but let’s take a look at a few of the other fab London days out in the Big Smoke to keep you busy .

As well as listing some of the best things to do in London, in this city guide I’ve also listed the best days out in London by interest. So, if you like your theatre then you can find the best day out in London for you – same for foodies, art lovers, and more adventurous types too.

I lived in London for 7 years in my 20s and loved the city. Let me introduce you to some of the best days out in London to get you started.

Days Out in London

Shopping days out in London

1. visit london’s markets.

London has loads of weekly, yearly and even daily markets. All these markets have a distinct vibe and offer a variety of things like food, clothes, antiques, accessories, homeware and more.

–  Old Spitalfields Market, in east central , is packed full of charming vintage clothing, handmade, rustic accessories, fantastic worldly foods and novel art that you wouldn’t find anywhere else for such affordable prices. It’s open seven days a week and is closest to Liverpool Street Station.

–  Camden Market, as you’d expect, is in Camden, mostly located near the Camden Lock. This is the one for the rockers and music lovers – pick up a leather jacket, get some vegan lunch and get pierced. That’s the kinda vibe.

–  Portobello Market is in Notting Hill , and is one of the most popular thanks to the instagrammability of the area. The colourful houses, pretty streets and collection of unique things to sell make it a popular place for photographers, every weekend. There are some great captions about London for Instagram here, if you’re lost for words!

–  Jubilee Market in Covent Garden is on every day of the week. Visit at Christmas for all the super special feels. You’ll be paying a premium here, but there are some great places to buy more unique presents and there are terraces to eat on here too. Little insider trick for you – pop over to the Royal Opera House and go up to their terrace bar to enjoy a bird’s eye view over the market. Wonderful spot for people watching!

–  Borough Market near London Bridge is famous as London’s premium food market. All kinds of coffee, salt beef, fish, vegetables, fudge and cake can be found here. I worked near here for a while and it was dangerous for my waistline. Don’t expect samples, but do expect some homemade totally delicious treats out of the ordinary. Did you really go to one of London’s food markets if you didn’t indulge in a fine selection of oils, cheese, cereals, cookies and fresh farm produce?

Other popular markets in London include the summer markets near Canary Wharf and the Brixton Market in Brixton . Southbank Centre Book Market on the South Bank is a great spot to pick up a new read.

Westfield Stratford City in London is perfect for shopping.

One of the most amazing things about Westfield Stratford City is that you get every designer outlet and every brand in one place. The mall offers not only the best shopping experience but different activities to enjoy for the entire day.

Apart from the bowling alley, bars, and fine dine-ins, you can also go for a gamble at Aspers Casino (careful).

Also, and what I like best about Westfield shopping centre in Stratford is that it’s just opposite the old BBC studios. Go outside and walk up the road a little for a looksee.

Plenty of places to go shopping in London, and the markets are a great place to pick up a London souvenir or two!

Arty / architectural days out in London

2. visit london’s churches.

Even if you’re not of the religious persuasion, visiting the churches make for a great day out in London. Go from church to church and see the incredible architecture and decoration.

Westminster Abbey is probably the most popular church to visit in London. It’s right next to the Palace of Westminster, and its where many of our Royals have gotten married in the past.

St Paul’s Cathedral deserves a mention of course. With the second largest church dome in the world, this church’s architecture is extraordinary. It’s one of the most impressive landmarks in London.

Saint Sophia Cathedral is one of the most visually stunning churches inside, with a colourful dome and altar. This Greek Orthodox church is on Moscow Road in Bayswater. I’d definitely recommend adding this church to your day out in London.

Southwark Cathedral is an Anglican Cathedral on the south bank of the River Thames. It’s a stunning building home to an inclusive community. On the outside, the building makes for some great photos. 3. Street Art Tour in London

If you’re looking for a unique day out in London, how about joining a street art tour?

I once joined a street art tour in Shoreditch, which started late morning. My friend and I followed the tour guide around Shoreditch for two hours, learning about the graffiti scene in London and seeking out some cool spots I’d never seen before.

Once it’d finished, we went back to some of the cool spots, bars and shops we’d seen and ended up spending the day mooching round Shoreditch. We had more purpose and local knowledge than if we’d just headed there, and it was a brilliant day out in London.

4. Art gallery tour of London

There are so many art galleries in London – there’s no way you’d be able to even half of them in a day out in London, even if you just popped your head in for a minute on each.

Instead, I’ll give you the top three art galleries to include in your day out in London. As you potter around the city, you’ll find cute little galleries in the most unexpected places.

Just give a little nod to the gallery owner and ask if you can look around – the smaller ones probably won’t have a charge.

– The Saatchi Gallery

One art gallery that is often overlooked i s the Saatchi Gallery that exhibits Charles Saatchi’s collection of contemporary art. Opened to the public in 1985, it contains an impressive selection of modern pieces, some overwhelming, colossal and shocking: a lot of Damien Hirst’s work can be seen here. It’s in the lovely location of Chelsea and is open seven days a week.

– The National Gallery

The National Gallery is probably the most popular and well known gallery in London. You’ll find it right in the heart of London, in Trafalgar Square.

The National Gallery houses one of the greatest collections of paintings in the world, and the 200-year old building also stands as a work of art and piece of history itself.

– The Serpentine Gallery

The Serpentine Gallery is in a great location, right in the centre of Kensington Gardens. Here you’ll find a range of contemporary art and architecture, and for experimentation. While you’re there cross over the Serpentine Bridge to the Serpentine Sackler Gallery and you’ll find the Serpentine Gallery’s little sister, living in a former 1805 gunpowder store.

– The Estorick Collection

The Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art can be found near Highbury & Islington station in a Grade II listed Georgian town house, bringing together important works created by Italian artists during the first half of the twentieth century. It’s Britain’s only gallery devoted to modern Italian art, so if this is something you find interesting, you will want to add it to your list.

Visiting these four art galleries will make for a great day out in London, and you’re bound to spot more in between. Use these as a goal and then just see what happens along the way!

Outdoorsy days out in London

5. chill in the parks.

If your idea of a great day out in London is to relax in the parks and just soak up the vibe, then there are plenty of options for you!

There is, of course, a great choice of parks in London but one of the most underrated is Richmond Park. Located in southwest London, Richmond Park is not as central as Hyde Park – or as busy – but it is arguably more attractive. A Natural Nature Reserve, this is the largest urban parkland in Europe and over 600 red and fallow deer make it their home. On a pleasant day you could easily spend a day getting lost in its enchanting forest and you can even see St Paul’s if sat in the right spot.

You’re definitely going to need a weekend in London to explore some of these.

My favourite park from my days of living in London was Primrose Hill . I loved it up there. I’d come in from St Johns Wood end and walk through to Camden. It’s super chill here, and one of the best spots for a day out away from children.

From here you can get a great view across London , and the London Zoo – one of the best zoos in England – is just round the corner.

I feel we have to mention Hyde Park . Located up my Marble Arch, off Oxford Street, this is the most central park in London. There are often gigs here, especially in the summer, but for the rest of the year it’s just a cool place to hang out and relax. When the sun comes out you can expect it to get busy here!

And we can’t leave Victoria Park – located in the east of the city. This is the park for the cool kids. Hipsters, skinny jeans, that vintage look, too cool for school – yeah, it’s those types that hang out here. Absolutely, definitely, one of my favourite places for people watching!

How about going to Kew Gardens to get a fix of greenery on your day out in London?

Buy a ticket to explore Kew Gardens and you can wander around the thousands of plants, fauna, bushes and trees that make up this incredible spot in London. Kew Gardens makes for a great day out in London for adults.

7. Climb the O2 & Greenwich

Climbing Up at the O2 is perfect for anyone who wants an awesome view of London that sounds a bit more adventurous than ‘going up The Shard’ and a little less than ‘London by helicopter’. You could even take your mum and dad, if you were looking for something parent-friendly to do on your day out in London.

Basically, you’re climbing over the top of the o2 centre in Greenwich, harnessed in and totally safely.

The runway is designed to emulate how it would feel to actually scale the O2 centre. It was like a blue buoyant trampoline material that bounced as you went.

The view from the top was awesome. You can see Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge, the Thames, plenty of lights, Alexandra Palace and hundreds of buildings that we had know idea what they were.

We had about 20 minutes on the top to play around, admire the view and take awesome jumping photos.

The climb takes about an hour, and costs £35. If you combine your trip over the O2 with a trip round Greenwich, and Greenwich Market, you’ve got a fabulous day out in London to enjoy.

If you’re in London with teenagers , climbing the O2 is a great active activity!

Boozey / foodie days out in London

8. hang out in soho.

Soho is renowned for its sex shops, jazz scene and gay village – it’s incredibly original and colourful here. There are an abundance of bars, clubs, cafes and plenty of theatre productions: big budget and low key. It is never not packed and is more pulsating and absorbing than Oxford Circus, Regent Street and other locations in central London.

You could spend the morning shopping and mooching, the afternoon drinking cocktails on the streets in Happy Hour, and then the evening enjoying a show. Oh, and the late night getting up to who knows what! Everything goes in Soho.

In Soho you can walk some of the most famous streets in London , soaking up the vibes as you go.

This is one of the best days out in London.

9. Chicken Wing Tour in London

Our Chicken Wing Tour in London was the best. In fact, of all the travels and things I’ve ever put on my Instagram, this was the activity that’s given me the most reader questions.

We tried five different chicken wings, at different places around Shoreditch. Again, you could do as we did above – use the tour as a basis to a great day out in Shoreditch. I can recommend Cafe 1001 to chill out after, and the urban golf place next door too.

Film / TV / Music day out in London

10. harry potter day out.

Understandably London has the highest concentration of Harry Potter filming locations and book inspiration for old JK Rowling. And a day out in London gives you the opportunity to see as many as possible.

Check out my blog post on Harry Potter Days Out in England for more information, but here’s the basic premise.

Kings Cross Station for Platform 9 3/4, and the Harry Potter Shop. Leadenhall Market near Holborn for the inspiration for Diagon Alley, and then Regent’s Park Zoo for the spot where the snake scene in book one was filmed.

And good luck for getting tickets to the Cursed Child – best book that one well in advance TBH!

11. DNA VR Experience in Camden, in London

I totally booked this for my boyfriend. I had little to no interest in VR gaming, but hey ho, let’s give it a go.

I couldn’t actually find a VR experience in Shoreditch so we had to venture out to Camden, but it was easy via the tube from Old Street to Kentish Town and a little walk.

We arrived to a sketchy looking door and headed on down. The DNA VR Experience was in the basement. A room filled with blacked out cubicles, where the VR magic happens. We spent the next hour playing Beat Saber, Arizona Sunshine and SkyFront VR. You could play some of them against each other, and others were just single player.

My favourite was definitely Beat Saber – bit like one of those dance machines. Loved it.

SkyFront was SO trippy. You know like when you step on an escalator that’s not working and your mind doesn’t know what’s going on? Well that. You could teleport to different positions and the rush went straight to my head.

It was fun, and sweaty, and I got VERY into it.

I was really surprised at how expensive this was to be honest though, but I spent a lot of time researching VR places in London and it seemed to just be how much VR gaming is.

It was £35 per hour peak price, EACH.

12. Shrek’s Adventure Day Out in London

One for the kids, how about having a Shrek’s Day Out in London?

Shrek’s Adventure is a brand new attraction near the London Eye where you can meet all your fave characters from the films. Buy a ticket for Shrek’s Adventure and you’ll get to fly over London in Donkey’s magical 4-D bus. You’ll also team up with Pinocchio and friends to help find Shrek and save the day. Plus, don’t miss Find The Beat, a walk-through musical experience based on the Trolls movies.

There are 10 live action shows that lead on your very own quest as you don’t just watch the story, you become the story. The experience lasts for 75 minutes and is suitable for kids over 6.

Royal day out in London

13. a royal tour of london.

If you’re a fan of England’s Royal Family then you’re going to love a day out in London seeing all the royal sites.

Start off with Buckingham Palace – there’s usually an exhibition on which means you can potter around the palace, walking in the steps of our Queen. Book a guided tour at Buckingham Palace to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes.

You also need to go to Westminster Abbey, to visit the spot where Prince Wills and Kate said their I dos back in 2011. We’ve already covered St Paul’s Cathedral, but you need to add this beautiful building into your royal day out in London, as this is where Prince Charles and Diana’s nuptials took place.

Kensington Palace, Hampton Court Palace and the Tower of London are also popular spots for Royal Family spotting in London, as well as St Paul’s Cathedral. The Changing of the Guard Walking Tour will provide an opportunity to ask all those questions you want the answer to, too.

Day out in London on the Southbank

The Southbank makes for a lovely day out in London – there’s so much to do there. You could combine a visit to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre with the shops and restaurants along the riverbank.

You could go on the famous London Eye .

It’s really not far to walk along the South Bank to The Shard either. Buy a ticket to go up the Shard and you can drink Champagne while looking over the city.

14. Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is on the South Bank in London and makes for a great day out in the city. You can get tickets to a performance here, if you’re quick and have some cash. Or, you can do like I did and go for the day and look round the theatre and have a tour.

It’s a beautiful theatre and there’s a museum attached too. You’ll learn all about how Shakespeare started up in the town of Stratford Upon Avon, in Warwickshire, as well as his effect on London’s theatres too.

I can’t not mention the ramen place round the corner – Tonkotsu Bankside. Gawd it’s special in there and absolutely delicious. A great way to top off a cultural day out in London!

Historical day out in London

15. london dungeon, tower of london and tours.

London is of course, brimming with history . Every corner, every turn, every time you look up – but there are places you can go in London where the history pretty much slaps you in the face.

The London Dungeon is one of them, as is the Tower of London and Crown Jewels Tour – I’ve done both and they’re such an interesting insight into what London is built on. There’s a new attraction at the Tower of London – The Gunpowder Plot at Tower Vaults .

Here, you can journey back in time and witness London as it was in 1605 with The Gunpowder Plot immersive experience at the UNESCO World Heritage Tower Vaults, located alongside The Tower of London. Using a combination of live theatre and the latest digital technology, audiences will be transported into the heart of the Guy Fawkes story in which they are the protagonist. Making use of hi-tech headsets, the 90-minute show uses actors, special effects and VR to recreate the scene.

Sounds pretty unique, hey?

How about a tour?

The Jack the Ripper Walking Tour is a good shout and as well as being historical, it’s also a good introduction to the Shoreditch area. The Churchill War Rooms could be a great experience for you too, if you love your history.

A day trip in Upstate New York  can lead to all kinds of adventures. Take a selfie with statues of women's rights legends Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. Chase waterfalls from Niagara to the gorges of Ithaca to Ausable Chasm in the Adirondacks. Get wet at water parks in Canandaigua or Old Forge, and catch sunsets on Million Dollar Beach in Lake George or atop Mount Defiance at Fort Ticonderoga. Check out these ideas when planning your next day trip in Upstate New York.

Animal Adventure Park

Spend the day with  Upstate New York's most famous giraffe, April, and her new offspring. The  private zoo in Harpursville opens for the season on May 13, with daily hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is cash-only (with an ATM on site), and visitors can purchase food for various animal encounters (carrots for the camels and giraffes are $3, grapes for the monkeys and lemurs are $2). The park's other inhabitants include zebras, black bears, buffalo, pot-bellied pigs and hedgehogs, a mountain lion and Tibetan yak. The park is about a 15-minute drive from Binghamton; grab lunch at the  Main Street Grill and Bakery in nearby Afton, designed to mimic the pace and menus of eateries in New York City.

Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum

Hit the road for Jamestown, hometown of famed comedienne Lucille Ball. The Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum is home to reproductions of the sets from the television show, "I Love Lucy," Ball's Emmy awards, props, costumes and rare memorabilia from the legendary 1950s comedy television show.  Look for the multi-story mural of the iconic Vitameatavegamin advertisement, as well as a depiction of the conveyor belt scene in the chocolate factory. In the nearby village of Celeron, visitors can take a selfie with a bronze statue of Ball made headlines in recent years. The original  "Scary Lucy" statue was replaced last summer with a more flattering sculpture, which shows Ball in a polka-dot dress. Also nearby: Southern Tier Brewing Company , which offers tours and tastings throughout the week (check their website for hours, which change seasonally).

For art, antiques and culinary delights, spend a day in Beacon, located on the Hudson River in Dutchess County. The  DIA art museum is located in the former Nabisco box factory and houses an impressive collection of large-scale contemporary exhibits. More galleries are scattered throughout downtown Beacon, along with antique and jewelry stores and farm-to-table restaurants and brewpubs. Grab lunch at the Dr. Who-themed restaurant,  The Pandorica , or bring home baked good from the Beacon Bread Company . For unique souveniers, visit Dream in Plastic, a quirky toy shop, or  Hudson Beach Glass, which features glass-blowing demonstrations and a sculpture gallery.

Strong National Museum of Play

For a family-friendly day trip, head to the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester. Little kids will love the reproduction of  Sesame Street, where Big Bird overlooks the famous stoop at 123 Sesame Street. Kids of all ages — and adults too — will enjoy the Wegmans Super Kids Mart , with child-sized grocery carts, shelves filled with lifelike products and a working checkout station where pint-sized cashiers can scan their own bar-coded items. Parents will enjoy a stop at the Toy Halls of Fame , which includes classic toys from the past, from Etch-a-Sketch and G.I. Joe to Atari and Easy Bake Oven. Don't forget to stop by the  Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden, the only year-round indoor butterfly garden in Upstate New York, and take a ride on the restored 1918 carousel  and the Strong Express, an indoor locomotive. Have lunch at the Strong's cafeteria , with a la carte options including Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Subway, or have a sit-down meal at Bill Gray's Restaurant or at the vintage Skyliner Diner located in the museum's atrium.

Letchworth State Park

Heralded as the "Grand Canyon of the East," Letchworth State Park boasts nearly 600-foot cliff walls and three major waterfalls along the Genesee River. More than 66 miles of hiking trails wind through the park, as well as amenities for whitewater rafting and kayaking ,  seasonal hot balloon rides, horseback riding and biking. Be sure to check out Inspiration Falls, the state's tallest plunging waterfall with a total drop of over 350 feet. In the evening, visit the Charcoal Corral and Silver Lake Twin Drive-In Theater in nearby Perry, with an 18-hole mini-golf course, giant inflatables, weekly car cruise-ins, live music and outdoor double features on the weekend.

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

The 9,800-acre site outside of Seneca Falls  is home to six active bald eagles nests, with observations of nearly 60 eagles in recent years. Take a one-mile hike along the Seneca Trail from the Visitor Center, or stay in your car for the 3.5-mile Wildlife Drive through the preserve. Binoculars are available for loan to help visitors see waterfowl, herons and other marsh birds, Canada geese, bald eagle, osprey, harriers and other birds of prey, and shorebirds. Other wildlife sightings include muskrat, white-tailed deer, mink, fox and coyote. Cap your visit with a trip to Montezuma Winery  in Seneca Falls, known for dry to sweet wines including riesling, blueberry, rhubarb and the most popular, Cranberry Bog. The winery is also home to Hidden Marsh Distillery , which produces brandy, whiskey and liqueurs from locally-sourced ingredients. Be sure to check out the flagship Bee Vodka, handmade in small batches from New York honey.

Sackets Harbor

Take a step back in history at the  Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site , where two crucial battles of the War of 1812 took place overlooking Lake Ontario. The site hosts numerous activities throughout the year, with living history reenactments, cannon and artillery demonstrations and other educational opportunities. Families will enjoy a side excursion to Old McDonald's Farm , where visitors can hand-feed beef cows and dairy goats, ride a pony and take a tour of the farm via tractor. For meals, head into the village for brick oven pizza at  Goodfellos or dinner or brunch in the courtyard of Tin Pan Galley . Try the 1812 Amber Ale or Thousand Islands Pale Ale at Sackets Harbor Brewing Company , and end your visit with a scoop from Saturdays, Sundaes & More , the village ice cream shop.

Lake Placid

The two-time home of the Olympic Games isn't just a winter destination. The  Lake Placid Olympic Center is open year-round; the complex houses the rink where the U.S. Hockey Team's Miracle on Ice took place in 1980. For an active visit, check out High Peaks Cyclery , which offers mountain bike, kayak, canoe and hiking gear rentals to explore the Adirondack Mountains year-round.  SUP Lake Placid rents stand-up paddle boards and kayaks on Mirror Lake, and hosts outdoor yoga classes. For an easy day hike, head to nearby Cascade Mountain , one of the easiest High Peaks to climb with a spectacular panoramic vista at the summit (4,098 feet). Take a break with a drink at Big Slide Brewery ,  Lake Placid Pub and Brewery or the Great Adirondack Brewing Company .

Sterling Renaissance Festival

Spend a day in an authentic English Renaissance village, where a cast of royals, townspeople, thieves, beggars, artisans and craftspeople transport visitors to the realm of Warwick, England, in 1585. Daily activities at the 35-acre park include parades, jousts and duels, archery demonstrations, period music and dancing, and performances on 12 stages, including a "Wench auction." The  menu is fit for a royal feast, with turkey legs, steak-on-a-stake, mile high cakes and adult beverages including ale, wine and mead. Rent a period costume near the main entrance or purchase apparel, jewelry, headpieces, armor and weaponry at the Royal Marketplace.  Themed weekend celebrations include an Ale Fest, Highland Fling, Pirate Invasion and Fantasy, Fairies and the Future. Admission is $24.95 for adults, $12.95 for children; tickets can be purchased in advance online .

The Finger Lakes  community of Corning offers a ton of activities for visitors of all ages. No trip to Corning is complete without a visit to the Corning Museum of Glass ; sign up ahead of time to make your own glass project with the help of experts, or stop into one of the group glassmaking demonstrations held throughout the day. Spend the rest of your day exploring the "Crystal City," starting at the Rockwell Museum , a Smithsonian-affiliated museum featuring American artists. For lunch or dinner, head over to the Gaffer District , which has been  recognized by Bon Appetit as a notable destination for food along the Appalachian Trail. The area has grown to include over 45 restaurants and over 50 places to shop for unique items; end your day with a treat at the  Old World Cafe and Ice Cream shop, featuring a Victorian ice cream counter and old-fashioned homemade candies.

Salamanca and the Enchanted Mountains

Known as the Enchanted Mountain  region for its picturesque scenery,  Allegany State Park offers sandy beaches, 18 different hiking trails and 5.6 miles of bike trails for outdoor adventures. Head to the Red House area of the park, where a Tudor-style administration building overlooks the lake and offers a restaurant with a full menu and patio seating . Step into the past at the Salamanca Rail Museum , a fully restored passenger depot that dates to the early 1900s. Try horseback riding at Crosspatch stables , which offers guided trail rides and Chuckwagon dinners. Before heading home, try your luck at  Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino, with slot machines, table games, restaurants and other activities.

Hunter Mountain

Hunter Mountain welcomes visitors year-round for outdoor activities and draws big crowds for music festivals, like the Taste of Country Music Festival  and Mountain Jam Fest . Take a scenic skyride to the 3,200-foot summit of Hunter Mountain, where you can see the high peaks of the northern Catskills, the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts and the Green Mountains of Vermont. For a more adventurous ride, check out New York Zipline Adventure Tours , the longest and highest zipline canopy tour in North America featuring over five miles of ziplines, some reaching heights of nearly 600 feet above the ground. The Hunter Mountain resort also offers fly fishing , 4-by-4 off road adventures , hiking ,  golf and disc golf . Try a local brew at  Hunter Mountain Brewery, which offers a full lunch and dinner menu, outdoor dining and live music.

The home of the world-famous Boilermaker Road Race , the city of Utica has been growing its offerings for visitors in recent years. The Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute  is home to a permanent collection of 300 years of American painting, 19th-century decorative arts, European Modernism and Japanese prints. Tour the  Saranac brewing facility on Varick Street and try pints or flights in the 1888 Tavern tasting room. Kids will love the  Utica Zoo or the Utica Children's Museum , both small facilities that serve up big fun for all ages. For a culinary tour, be sure to try Utica's signature  chicken riggies (at the Chesterfield Restaurant ), Utica greens (a la Georgio's Village Cafe ) and  tomato pie (try Roma Sausage & Deli ) and halfmoon cookies for dessert (check out Holland Farms Bakery ).

Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens

Built in 1900, the nearly  12-acre conservatory and surrounding formal gardens offers visitors a chance to experience the flora of the Florida Everglades, the Panama cloud forest, the American desert and the Asian rainforest. The centerpiece is the glass conservatory, modeled after the famous Crystal Palace in England. Be sure to visit the Palm Dome, a 67-foot-tall room filled with palms and tropical fruit trees. A new exhibit highlights aquatic gardens and the Asian rainforest, with a peaceful pond (and a family of koi fish), waterfall, moon gate and collection of orchids and bonsai. Kids will love the Wegmans Family Garden, where they can plant seeds, build sand castles, water the garden and take part in other activities. The outdoor gardens include a Peace Garden and Healing Garden.

Start your day in the historic downtown business district, where flag-lined sidewalks connect visitors to the shops, restaurants and events that keep the community bustling with activity. Pack a picnic and head to Lakeland Park, located across from the Brae Loch Inn  at the intersection of Forman and Albany streets. The picturesque park includes a dock and diving board and sandy beach. Lifeguards are on duty from June to August; a public bathhouse offers restrooms and showers. Take a drive to nearby Chittenango Falls State Park , home to a 167-foot waterfall that dates back more than 10,000 years. A trail winds through the 194-acre park, which offers picnic areas and fishing. Or head to Stone Quarry Hill Art Park , a 104-acre property filled with outdoor sculptures nestled along four miles of trails. Kids will love Critz Farms , a year-round agritourism destination that offers U-pick fruit crops, a giant playground and barnyard petting area (Be sure to check out the gift shop for local treasures and  Harvest Moon Cidery and Winery for adult beverages). For dinner and drinks, wine lovers can head north of the village to  Owera Vineyards, with a tasting room overlooking Cazenovia Lake and brick oven serving up tasty flatbreads. For a local brew, head south of the village to Empire Farmstead Brewery , a new stop on the local brewery trail that features an outdoor dining space to enjoy flights and pints.

Windmill tours

Since the early 2000s, wind turbines have been popping up across Upstate New York. The  giant towers have drawn onlookers since the beginning, and several of the wind farms have installed visitors centers to allow interested tourists to get a closer look at the clean energy giants. At the FREE Center in Fenner , informational kiosks that outline the renewable energy efforts in Madison County are set up off of Bellinger Road. Visitors can picnic beside one of the towers, which weighs more than 187 tons and stands 212 feet from the ground to the center hub, and 329 feet from the ground to the tip of a blade at its full height.  Check out the full-size turbine blade on the ground to get a sense of the size and weight of the structures.  Maple Ridge Wind Farm , New York State's largest wind farm, is located in Lowville in Lewis County, with 195 turbines that produce enough electricity to power approximately 136,000 homes, about 2 percent of New York State's residential electricity need. Pull over at the  visitor's center kiosk on Eagle Factory Road off Route 177 for a panoramic view of the 21,000 acre site on the Tug Hill Plateau, about 75 miles northeast of Syracuse.

Culinary Institute of America

For a taste of the Hudson Valley , head to Hyde Park, where a group of restaurants  run in conjunction with the Culinary Institute of America are serving up unique cuisine. There's  Ristorante Caterina deMedici for Italian lovers, the  Bocuse Restaurant for a French fine dining experience, and American Bounty Restaurant and Tavern , focusing on regional and seasonal products. Bring home a sweet treat from the Apple Pie Bakery Cafe, with baked goods and desserts like red velvet, carrot cake and pineapple upside down cake macarons, Nutella doughnut holes, lemon elderflower eclairs and classic apple pie. The restaurants are part of the educational experience for students at CIA, who spend time in both the front and back of the house to learn and master the full scope of restaurant operations under the guidance of expert chef-instructors.

Skaneateles

The  Finger Lakes community draws visitors each year for the crystal clear waters of Skaneateles Lake and the quaint culture of the picturesque downtown. Take a cruise of the 16-mile-long lake with Mid-Lakes Navigation , which offers lunch cruises featuring Dinosaur BBQ, romantic dinner cruises and more family-friendly sightseeing cruises aboard a the Judge Ben Wiles, a replica steamship. Explore the downtown shops, restaurants and galleries at your leisure, and be sure to walk out on the pier for a beautiful view of the water and the surrounding landscape. Landmark restaurants include the Sherwood Inn , Doug's Fish Fry ,  The Krebs and Blue Water Grill . Enjoy an afternoon tasting at Anyela's Vineyard , which overlooks the village, or head to  Mirbeau Inn and Spa for a day of relaxation at the estate built to mimic the French landscapes of Claude Monet.

Women's Rights National Historic Park

Step back in time in Seneca Falls  to learn about the efforts of women's rights leaders and other reformers in the 19th century. Start your day at visitor center to pick up maps and daily schedules — be sure to check out the life-size bronze statues of the women and men who organized the first Women's Rights Convention, including Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Frederick Douglass. Head to the adjacent Wesleyan Chapel , where the convention was held in 1848, and follow the tour to the home of Elizabeth Cady Stanton , which the famous suffragette called the "Center of the Rebellion." Be sure to stop by the National Women's Hall of Fame , which honors more than 250 women from Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the first female speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. (Note: a new home for the hall and the Center for Great Women is under construction at the 1844 Seneca Knitting Mill ; for now, it remains at a historic bank building on Falls Street in the heart of downtown.)

Mohonk Mountain House

Located in the heart of the Hudson Valley , the Victorian castle resort built in 1869  has served as a getaway for the Rockefellers, Andrew Carnegie and five U.S. presidents: Chester A. Arthur, Rutherford B. Hayes, William Howard Taft, Theodore Roosevelt and Bill Clinton.  Day guest packages  allow visitors to enjoy the amenities of the resort without spending the night.  Spa packages  include access to the eucalyptus steam room, sauna and outdoor heated mineral pool; reservations at any of the  award-winning restaurants comes with access to the resort and grounds for the day.  Day passes for hiking include access to 85 miles of trails, ranging from beginner to advanced difficulty. Take the three-mile hike to the Sky Top Tower, a 100-foot-tall stone building at the peak of the preserve with panoramic views of the Catskills, or enjoy the woodlands on horseback or by horse-drawn carriage . Tennis packages are available, along with tours of the historic house , greenhouse and Victorian gardens and afternoon tea and cookies. The other recreational activities at the resort include disc golf, rock climbing, boating, golf, mounting biking, archery and tomahawk throwing.

Watkins Glen

For a fast-paced adventure, head to Watkins Glen International , where racing weekends feature sports car, endurance and stock car events. Visitors can experience the iconic racetrack themselves  by driving their own vehicle around the 3.4-mile Grand Prix circuit behind a pace car . After two laps, cars will have their photos taken the start/finish line. The Finger Lakes Wine Festival  also draws crowds to the site. Other Watkins Glen excursions: Farm Sanctuary , a 175-acre refuge for more than 500 rescue animals; Watkins Glen State Park , known for its gorge trail and 19 waterfalls; and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail , with more than three dozen wineries and vineyards, plus a growing number of  breweries and distilleries .

Tupper Lake

Advertised as the "High Line of the Forest," the  Wild Walk  gives visitors a chance to walk among the trees on a trail of bridges at the  81-acre Adirondack campus . The park includes a four-story twig tree house, a spider's web-like net for climbing, and a nest that visitors can climb into to see the view from 42 feet in the air. While in Tupper Lake, stop by  Little Wolf Beach , one of the largest public beaches in the Adirondacks, with lifeguards watching over a floating dock with trampoline and rope swing. Or take in a movie at  Adirondack State Theater , which opened its doors in 1914.

Guaranteed to delight young audiences year-round,  Santa's Workshop  near  Whiteface Mountain  has been an Adirondack tradition since 1949. The storybook village includes Santa's House, the reindeer barn, a bakery, candy shop, blacksmith and toy shop. Rides include a sleigh coaster, bobsled ride, Candy Cane Express train, ferris wheel and Christmas carousel. Summer hours at the park are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, from June 27 to Sept. 3. Autumn and winter hours vary.

Ausable Chasm

Billed as the  Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks , the sandstone gorge south of Plattsburgh offers spectacular views of primeval rock formations including Elephant's Head, Column Rock Hyde's Cave and Jacob's Well. The adventure center offers a variety of activities, from low-intensity hiking to more adventurous rock climbing, rappelling and cliff walks. Visitors can tube or raft down the Ausable River (bring water shoes), experiencing the towering cliffs, rapids and whirlpool basin. Fifteen miles of mountain biking trails for beginner and advanced riders wind through the Adirondack terrain.

Thousand Islands

Explore the  Thousand Islands  with a  boat tour , where seasoned guides share the stories of the more than 1,800 islands that cover 50 miles of the St. Lawrence River between New York and Canada. Set aside time to explore Heart Island, home of the six-story, 120-room  Boldt Castle  with an indoor pool, stunning grounds and panoramic views of the St. Lawrence. Weekend festivities take over downtown  Alexandria Bay  throughout the summer, with live entertainment for the whole family.

Fort Ticonderoga

Located at the southern end of Lake Champlain, the  Fort Ticonderoga  facility recreates life in the mid-1700s with musket firing demonstrations each day at 11 a.m. and cannon firing demonstrations at 2 p.m. In addition to military history, have a picnic atop  Mount Defiance , where panoramic vistas include Lake Champlain and the High Peaks; reach the picnic pavilion by car or hike up the mountain trails once traversed by troops.  Rent a canoe  to explore the fort by water, or take a  boat tour  of the Ticonderoga Peninsula aboard the 49-passenger tour boat Carillon.

The fun never stops at  Enchanted Forest , the state's largest water theme park with more than 50 rides and attractions. The water park includes relaxing tube rides to high speed slides, including the newest double-tube ride "The Silverback," a 100 foot drop into a large 40-foot-diameter bowl. Need a  break from the water park?   Take a six-mile paddling tour of the Moose River and return via the  Adirondack Scenic Railroad . For an aerial view of the High Peaks,  ride the scenic chairlift to the top of McCauley Mountain.

Lake George

Nicknamed "Queen of the American Lakes,"  the resort town north of Albany  has been a favorite since the late 19th century, when John D. Rockefeller was a regular visitor. Spend the afternoon at  Million Dollar Beach at Lake George Beach State Park , named one of the best beaches for families for its cleanliness, public facilities and panoramic views of the lake and Adirondacks. Hop aboard the  Minnie-ha-ha , one of the last steam paddlewheel boats in America, for an hour-long cruise of the lake at sunset (or catch fireworks on Thursdays during the summer).

Saratoga Springs

Place a bet on the thoroughbreds at  Saratoga Race Course , the third oldest race course in America.  Races run six days a week,  and visitors are welcome to bring their own food and drink for a picnic.  Walk through the downtown business district to  Congress Park , where you can take a ride on the  historic wooden carousel . Drive down the Avenue of the Pines to enter  Saratoga Spa State Park , where you can walk past the marble colonnades and reflecting pool of the spa complex. Grab tickets for a nighttime concert at the  Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Woodstock Farm Sanctuary

The shelter  cares for farm animals that were victims of cruelty and neglect, rescued from stockyards, auctions and slaughterhouses. Each of the sanctuary's animals has a name and a story, including Clyde, a chicken found on the streets of New York City; Harper and Atticus, a pair of goats whose mother was rescued from a downstate farm; and Elvis, rescued while awaiting sale to at a veal auction.  Expect to interact with the animals - some of the pigs enjoy belly rubs, and sheep are likely to nuzzle you as you walk through the pasture. Tours are given on weekends, and a cafe offers vegan food options.

Howe Caverns

The  underground limestone cavern  is the largest cave open to the public in the Northeast and the second most visited natural attraction in New York State (after  Niagara Falls ). A 90-minute walking tour and boat ride takes visitors 156 feet below the ground to stalactites, stalagmites and an underground lake millions of years in the making. Above ground, the  High Adventure Park  includes a zip line, ropes course, rock wall and the H20-GO Ball, a 12-foot inflatable ball that takes riders down a 1,000-foot hill.

Chittenango

Get up close and personal with a variety of exotic and domestic animals that were hand-raised at  The Wild Animal Park . The stars of the park are a pair of giraffes — Jase and Jasmine — which visitors can hand feed from a new deck.  While you're in Chittenango , take a walk down the Yellow Brick sidewalk to the  All Things Oz museum , a tribute to the village's native son L. Frank Baum, author of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Adults can stop at the  Yellow Brick Road Casino , which opened in May 2015. Or head up to  Chittenango Falls State Park , home to a 167-foot waterfall.

Sylvan Beach

The vacation community on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake is perfectly sized for a day trip. Spend the afternoon at  Sylvan Beach Amusement Park , a throwback to the town's early resort days with a vintage Kiddieland with 10 rides for smaller guests, classic arcade games like Skeeball, the Galaxi steel roller coaster and bumper boats.There are plenty of opportunities for swimming, boating and fishing. Be sure to grab an ice cream cone and stroll through the downtown district after catching the sunset on the beach.

Cooperstown

You can start at the  National Baseball Hall of Fame , but there is a lot more to do in this lakeside community.  Plan a side trip to the  Farmer's Museum  and ride the Empire State Carousel. Or walk the grounds of  Hyde Hall,  a 50-room mansion overlooking  Otsego Lake , and take a walk on the beach at  Glimmerglass State Park.  Enjoy a tasting at one of the six stops on the  Cooperstown Beverage Trail ;  Brewery Ommegang  offers a cafe menu of Belgian favorites (try the frites — handcut fries that are twice fried and served with dipping sauces).

Niagara Falls

Cross this one off your  bucket list : A trip to see one of the natural wonders of the world. Board the  Maid of the Mist boat tour  to get within soaking distance of Horseshoe Falls; for an even wetter experience, take the  Cave of the Winds  tour, where a poncho is required for the Hurricane Deck that brings visitors beneath Bridal Veil Falls.  End your day with fireworks,  which go off at 10 p.m. every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday from May 1 to Oct. 31.

Ellicottville

Start your visit at Holiday Valley's  Aerial Park , a series of platforms, bridges and zip lines that create 13 different courses (the largest in New York State). Check out the climbing forest — a three-dimensional version of a climbing wall that is one of only three in the United States. Take a ride on the Mountain Coaster, a roller coaster ride down the terrain that includes curves, jumps and spirals. After an adventurous day, enjoy the  small-town charm of Ellicottville  and take home a sweet treat from  Watson's Chocolates , known for its sponge candy.

The 15.5-acre  Seneca Park Zoo  is the perfect size for children and adults alike. African lions prowl a savannah-like enclosure in the "A Step Into Africa" exhibit, which also is home to elephants and olive baboons. While in Rochester, try the city's signature dish at Nick Tahou Hots, home of the  "Garbage Plate,"  — where customers choose two selections of eggs, grilled cheese, fried ham, fried haddock, a cheeseburger, hamburger, red hot, white hot, Italian Sausage or chicken tender and two sides. And if you're on a budget, there are several  free things to do in Rochester .

Roseland Park

The 56-acre  Roseland Water Park  offers attractions for the entire family, from a splash pad for little kids, a lazy river for adults, a family raft ride that mimics whitewater rafting, a wave pool and high-intensity slides like the Cliff, which drops riders 65 feet at speeds of 30 mph. For a bigger rush, head over to the new  Roseland Wake Park,  the first full-sized cable wakeboarding park in the Northeast that pulls riders through a 2,100-foot continuous loop course on the lake that includes ramps and rails for tricks and stunts.

Finger Lakes

Visit the  Women's Rights National Historical Park  and the  National Women's Hall of Fame  and take a selfie with statues of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Frederick Douglass and Lucretia Mott. Take a stroll through  Seneca Falls , the quaint community that is widely believed to be the inspiration for Frank Capra's holiday classic, " It's A Wonderful Life ." Plan to visit several of the wineries on the  Seneca Lake Wine Trail,  including Belhurst Castle in Geneva, where you can dine at outdoor tables overlooking the lake. Not up for a wine tour? Make time to shop at  Waterloo Premium Outlets  or spend several serene hours birdwatching at  Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.

With more than  150 waterfalls within 10 miles  of Ithaca, you don't have to go far for a spectacular view. Check out  Taughannock Falls State Park,  home to a 215-foot waterfall (three stories higher than Niagara Falls) and walk the gorge and rim trails.  Robert H. Treman State Park  offers public swimming at the stream-fed pool beneath Enfield Falls; nine miles of trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls. After a day of hiking, enjoy the atmosphere at the newly renovated  Ithaca Commons,  a four-block pedestrian area with more than 100 shops, restaurants, street vendors and street entertainers.

If You Only Have One Day to Visit This Small Town in Kentucky, Here’s Everything You Absolutely Can’t Miss

A small town of about 18,000 people in southwestern Kentucky, Murray is the ideal place to spend a day. Case in point: Murray has been voted the "friendliest small town in America" by Rand McNally and USA Today five times! There's much to love about Murray beyond its friendly people. But what if you only have one day to spend in this treasured small town? We've compiled a list of four must-see attractions for a day trip to Murray, Kentucky:

1. Murray's Historic Town Square

The first thing visitors must see is Murray's historic town square. The square is a great place to walk around, shop, and grab a bite to eat. Murray City Hall is on the corner of 5th and Main Street. Nearby are three bookstores: Bolin's Books, Newlife Christian Bookstore, and Bookmark. The Main Street Market, a boutique grocery store, is also on Main Street. Hungry day trippers can eat at Mugsy's Hideout, which serves Italian food, or Rudy's on the Square , which serves classic Southern food. If you love visiting local coffee shops, as I do, 5th & Main Coffees is near City Hall. If you visit on a Saturday morning, look out for the popular Downtown Farmer's Market, where local vendors sell crafts and produce.

2. Wrather West Kentucky Museum

After getting acquainted with Murray's town square, the next place to visit is the Wrather West Kentucky Museum on Murray State University's campus. The museum is free and open to the public and shares historical information about West Kentucky and the Jackson Purchase through fixed and short-term exhibits. Interestingly, the museum is located in the university's first permanent building, which opened in 1924 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

3. The Doran Arboretum

The next stop is a 15-minute walk from the Wrather West Kentucky Museum: the Doran Arboretum at Murray State University . The arboretum is open every day from dawn to dusk and is the perfect place to take a walk on a pretty day. It has a 0.8-mile track for walking and running, a butterfly garden, a sensory garden, and much more.

4. Kentucky Lake

Incredibly, Murray is about 30 minutes from Kentucky Lake . This 160,000-acre lake is the last attraction we chose for our list of things to do on a one-day trip to Murray. Visitors can hike, bike, boat, horseback ride, golf, and hunt at Kentucky Lake. Of course, it is difficult, and likely impossible, to do all of these things at Kentucky Lake in one day. For a short visit, we recommend taking the Kentucky Lake Scenic Drive, a three-mile drive with several photo-worthy overlooks and places to picnic.

During these few short months of cooler temperatures and vibrant color, we want to be outside, soaking it in before winter creeps into the Bluegrass State. 1. Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest - 2075 Clermont Rd. Clermont, KY, 40110

If you're looking for what to do in Kentucky in October, Bernheim Arboretum is a picturesque retreat any time of the year, but in the fall the 15,625 acres of land come to life with stunningly brilliant color. There are many events held at the Arboretum throughout the season and more than 40 miles of trails available to take in the gorgeous scenery. The best way to soak up all this glorious scenery is on one of Bernheim's numerous trails. In addition to its paved walking paths, the park invites visitors to, quite literally, take to the trees. On its acclaimed canopy walk, a boardwalk extends straight into the forest canopy, suspending visitors an astonishing 75 feet above the forest floor. The experience truly feels as though you're floating in a dreamy, fairy tale forest!

2. Bardstown, Kentucky

Bardstown is hailed as Kentucky's most enchanting small town; a place that is filled with history, lovely restaurants and cafes, shops, and My Old Kentucky Home State Park. There's plenty to do here to keep you busy for an entire day, or better yet, stay in one of the delightful B&Bs nearby and make a fall weekend of it.

3. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Speaking of Bardstown, the Kentucky Bourbon Trail is one of the best Kentucky day trips any time of year, but it has certain appeal in the fall. As the weather cools, the bourbon seems to taste even better and the properties of these beautiful distilleries come to life with vibrant fall color.

4. Waverly Hills Sanatorium - 4400 Paralee Dr., Louisville, KY, 40272

What would fall be without a trip to a haunted house? And why not go to one of the most terrifying places for the ultimate experience? The Waverly Hills Sanatorium is one of the most haunted places not only in Kentucky, but in all of America. Waverly Hills Sanatorium is a historic former hospital in Louisville that came close to being demolished. A historical society saved it and has offered tours, ghost hunts, and other events for several years.

5. Country Pumpkins - 1835 Sherman Mt. Zion Road, Dry Ridge, KY, 41035

Country Pumpkins is the ultimate "fall on the farm" experience, located in Northern Kentucky's Dry Ridge. Although it's just minutes from the highway, you'll love your time on this peaceful, working dairy farm where the staff is extremely friendly and the activities are festive and authentic. It's the perfect family day trip to find that one-of-a-kind pumpkin in the patch, take a hayride, and try your luck at a massive corn maze.

6. Belle Of Louisville Riverboats - 401 W. River Rd. Louisville, KY, 40202

You may not think of taking a riverboat cruise in the fall, but now is actually an excellent time to hop aboard one of these historic boats. The Belle Of Louisville Riverboats has cruises through October, so you can still enjoy the sightseeing, history, and food while also taking advantage of lovely autumn scenery.
