Arrived to a very warm welcome. We have stayed at the Sunborn previously and to our surprise we were allocated the same room, which was lovely. Size of the room perfect, balcony is beautiful to stand on and take some wonderful photos. Breakfast was lovely, requested vegetarian sausages and this was no issue at all, they were lovely. Staff were very friendly and helpful

Absolutely everything from check in, breakfast, evening bar and departure. Nothing seemed too much trouble.

The location was great. We found the shower was brilliant, as was the room, the size and the facilities

Everything was fabulous. Clean very helpful & obliging staff. Food/drinks were on the expensive side but you can see the prices online before you book.

It was in the perfect spot for what we were doing. The room had a perfect view for us; we could see the queue for the event we were attending.

I do not know if its available in a higher graded room but a bath rather than shower would be superb. Nothing else to say really a lovely venue and great service.

Loved the setting of the yacht. Felt luxurious but friendly with a good atmosphere

Breakfast had an excellent selection Nice and close to the Excel centre

How guest reviews work

Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.

You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.

We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.

Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.

Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):

  • Politically sensitive comments
  • Promotional content
  • Illegal activities
  • Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
  • Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
  • Spam and fake content
  • Animal cruelty
  • Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
  • Any violation of our review guidelines.

To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.

An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.

When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).

We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Guidelines and standards for Reviews

These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.

Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.

Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Hampton Court Palace

Sunday We meet our guests in central London at the Stafford Hotel.  Enjoy a traditional English Cream Tea before being transferred by private chauffeured minibus to Magna Carta where a champagne reception awaits. Dinner on board.

Hampton Court Palace to Runnymede

Monday After a hearty breakfast, we will explore the stunning interior and extensive grounds of Hampton Court Palace. We then return to Magna Carta for lunch on board and our first cruise passing through several locks including Sunbury and Molesey before mooring at Runnymede. Dinner on board.

Runnymede to Windsor

Tuesday This morning is to be very relaxing as we use the spa facilities of the recently refurbished Runnymeed-on-Thames Hotel.  Sit back and enjoy the views as we then cruise past the Magna Carta Memorial to our mooring at Windsor. Do check to see if the Royal Standard is flying; perhaps the Queen is at home today!  We'll visit Windsor Castle, the largest inhabited castle in the world including the State Apartments, St George's Chapel, home of some recent Royal Weddings, and enjoy the far-reaching views. Dinner on board.

Windsor to Cliveden

Wednesday We step back in time today as we visit the Tudor Manor House of Dorney Court, which has been in the Palmer family for over 450 years. In the afternoon, there's time to relax on board and admire the fabulous waterside houses of Bray as we cruise to our evening mooring on the celebrated Cliveden estate.  Dinner on board.

Thursday A busy day awaits!  After an early morning cruise, we will visit the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham and then continue through Marlow and Hurley.  There will be a chance to tour Peter Freebody's traditional boatyard to discover this noble art, followed by an equally traditional pint of ale at Ye Olde Bell, reputed to be the oldest pub in England. On selected departure dates, we tour Highclere Castle, the real Downtown Abbey. Dinner on board.

Hurley to Henley-on-Thames

Friday We follow in the oars of many a famous rower this morning, along with the Henley Regatta Rowing Course to our mooring at Henley-on-Thames. Enjoy the views over an early lunch, before we head to the inspirational towers of Oxford's grandest college, Christ Church. A college was initially founded on this land by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525. Christ Church, as we know it today, was founded by King Henry VIII in 1546. Famous alumni include 13 British Prime Ministers, 17 Archbishops, the writer Lewis Caroll, the poet W H Auden and the eminent scientist Einstein. We return to Magna Carta in time for a fabulous Captain's Farewell Dinner on board.

Discover the best boat hotels in London with this handy guide. Here’s our pick of the best.

With the Thames running through London, along with a plethora of canals and marinas in the city, having a break on a boat hotel (or boatel?) is easier than you think.

From mega millionaire yachts to boutique barges, this is your one-stop shop for finding the best floating hotels in London.

Best London Boat Hotels: At a Glance

Best boat hotels in london.

££

Good Hotel London

The Good Hotel sits in the Royal Victoria Dock area of London’s Docklands. We love that this is a hotel with a social conscience – the not-for-profit basis of the hotel sees all profits reinvested to help underprivileged people, from sending children to school to offering adults the chance to retrain in hospitality.

Rooms at this hotel are designed to maximise space in the most stylish of ways. Utilising Dutch design, the ensuite bathrooms have outstanding rain showers and locally-sourced toiletries.

And best of all? Each night you stay, a disadvantaged child can go to school for a week.

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel

£££

Sunborn London Yacht Hotel

Moored in Royal Victoria Dock, in the heart of East London’s affluent Docklands area, the Sunborn Hotel is a minute’s walk from ExCeL London. This superyacht is highly luxurious, with crystal chandeliers, an opulent lobby, stunning dining areas and much more.

There is a sun deck where you can take drinks and sit back to soak up the rays, with the bar selling a terrific selection of beers, wines and spirits. Meanwhile, their breakfast buffet comes highly rated.

The best part of the Sunborn Yacht is unquestionably the accommodation. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, air conditioning and an excellent power shower, while some rooms even boast stunning views across the Royal Docks.

The Boathouse

The Boathouse

The Boathouse is a wood-panelled houseboat moored in the Paddington Basin, where the Regent’s Canal meets the Grand Union. Not too far from Little Venice , and with all the charming waterside bars, restaurants and beauty of the Paddington Basin, this is one of London’s premier floating holiday accommodations.

Although we’d recommend this boat for romantic breaks, there’s space for up to four people. Guests can use the whole boat, including a gorgeous bathroom with a bath and shower space.

The living quarters are super comfortable, and the kitchen is well-equipped. Best of all, the rooftop deck from which you can marvel at a beautiful London sunset for those summer months.

St Katharine Docks 2Boats

St Katherine Docks 2Boats

St Katharine Docks in Wapping is home to Sea Dancer, a yacht that sleeps four and includes a microwave, hot drink-making tools and a fridge for the whole self-catering waterborne experience.

On the boat is a work desk, a stove, flat-screen TV and even an outdoor dining area, step foot on land and you’ll be greeted by plenty of bars, restaurants and cafes to choose from.

Absolute Pleasure Yacht

Absolute Pleasure Yacht

Moored in West India Quay, the Absolute Pleasure Yacht gives guests a taste of the millionaire yacht-living lifestyle at a fraction of the price. Although it’s primarily a function space that hosts corporate and private parties, you can also hire the yacht for a break, which includes everything you’d expect from a top-draw London hotel.

Ten luxury bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs and luxe linen. Bottled water, toiletries and bathrobes are all included, while the yacht is moored close to a range of stunning bars, restaurants and a cool pop-up food market on Thursdays and Fridays.

Boutique Barges

Boutique Barges

Boutique Barges have three narrow boats moored on the Thames, offering holidaymakers and visitors to London an authentic riverside experience.

Barbara is a stunning boat with a log-fired stove and bathroom complete with a shower, as well as a small double master bedroom, and is situated in Central London.

Meanwhile, Big Boat is more comprehensive but shorter than Barbara and comes with a raised master double bed that we love, making it the perfect accommodation for a romantic couple’s break. Outside is space for a fire pit and a couple of deckchairs, ideal for watching the sun go down with a glass of bubbly.

Finally, Velvet Morning is another narrow boat that has been gorgeously designed and is moored in Central London. We’d say this was our favourite, thanks to the crisp and stylish decor.

Tulana Taggs

Tulana Taggs

This floating holiday home is one of our favourites. Mainly because it offers something a little bit different to the others we’ve mentioned.

Situated in the inner lagoon of Taggs Island near Hampton Court Palace and Bushy Park is a stunning oasis of calm where you can leave the stresses and strains of the 21st Century behind you.

Cross the bridge onto Taggs Island and enjoy this stunning floating home amongst the reeds of the lagoon. Tulana Taggs combines gorgeous Art Deco and period furnishings with the mod cons of a Sky Glass Smart TV, a four-poster Super King bed, a freestanding nickel bath and for a little extra, a Swedish wood-fired hot tub – just a stunning floating holiday home experience.

Practical Tips to Consider Before Booking Your London Yacht Hotel

  • These boat hotels are dotted around London, many of which have limited parking. Check before you book whether you need to travel to the boat via public transport or whether you can park at the hotel.
  • If you’re staying on a houseboat, check the house rules before you visit to ensure you know what is expected of you as guests.

The best boat trips in London

See the city from the Thames or one of London’s canals with these great London boat trips

London boat tours are a truly fabulous way to see the city’s top spots. The River Thames is a destination in itself, of course, and most London boat tours will take in famous landmarks such as the Tate Modern , St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, The O2 and Canary Wharf . You’ll be spoiled for choice with footage for your Instagram story.

If you fancy something a little bit different, there are some charming London boat tours along Regent’s Canal, many leading to the incredibly picturesque  Little Venice . Whether you’re a seasoned sea dog or a naval novice, there are definitely one or two London boat tours for you.

City Cruises

City Cruises

  • Things to do
  • Walks and tours
  • Victoria Embankment

City Cruises operate on a hop-on, hop-off basis and run from Westminster, London Eye, Tower and Greenwich Piers with commentary along the way. The River Red Rover ticket allows unlimited one-day cruising; there's also the Rail and River Rover ticket allowing unlimited one-day travel by river and on the DLR. Single or return tickets are available for shorter journeys, too. The London Showboat is an evening dinner and dance cruise running from Westminster Pier. Afternoon tea and lunch cruises are another popular option during peak periods.

Thames Rockets

Thames Rockets

  • Ships and boats

This slick RIB (ridged inflatable boat) operation offers a thrilling, high-speed ride on the Thames. You can book by phone or online, or just turn up and pay on the day at the London Eye Ticket Office. Arrive 20 minutes before the off to be kitted out with a waterproof jacket, a life jacket and goggle-style visors (fun in itself). The trip starts calmly enough and the guide will keep kids and adults entertained with fun facts and celebrity stories. But once the boat passes Wapping, it’s pedal to the floor all the way to Canary Wharf.

Tate to Tate Boat

Tate to Tate Boat

Running every 20 to 30 minutes, the boat service connecting London’s two Tate galleries, Tate Modern and Tate Britain, takes you through the heart of London, with plenty to see on both banks (head to the outdoor deck at the back of the boat for the best views). The catamaran service boasts specially commissioned exterior and interior designs by artist Damien Hirst, but there’s no commentary, so take a map.

Thames Clippers

Thames Clippers

River bus services running daily between Royal Arsenal Woolwich in the east and Battersea Power Station in the west. A daily commuter service operates every 20 minutes calling at all major central London piers. On event nights at The O2, the River Bus Express operates a fast direct shuttle service from London Eye (Waterloo) and London Bridge with optional champagne upgrades. There’s no tour guide on board, but you can download a free app for an audio commentary.

Thames RIB Experience

Thames RIB Experience

  • Sightseeing

Hurtling about the Thames at 30 knots (roughly 35mph) is the closest thing we’ve got to a white-knuckle ride in central London. It takes just under 40 minutes to travel from Westminster to Tower Bridge. Then the turbo engines kick in and you’re off, bumping about on the open water between Tower Bridge and Canary Wharf, turning in terrifyingly tight figures of eight. It’s the quickest, most thrilling way to travel the Thames.

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Two tours in one. The first, departing from Victoria Coach Station on a restored double-decker bus, will take in views of Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye, Westminster Abbey and Tower of London. The second is a cruise on the River Thames passing Shakespeare’s Globe, Cleopatra’s Needle and London Bridge before arriving at Embankment pier, where you hop back on the bus and head for Buckingham Palace. The tour will finish back at Victoria Coach Station.

Turks Launches

Turks Launches

Turks Launches have been operating boat tours along south-west London’s pretty stretch of Thames for 300 years. Running from Richmond Pier to Hampton Court, their routes pack in more historic sites than you might realise, including the seventeenth-century pile Ham House, Eel Pie Island (where Rod Stewart and The Rolling Stones used to party), and Teddington Lock’s Dunkirk Memorial. Turks tours run daily from March until September; look out for special disco and jazz cruises during peak months.

London Waterbus Company

London Waterbus Company

  • Camden Market

Navigate Regent’s Canal in a narrowboat with the London Waterbus Company. Trips run along the Regent’s Canal linking Little Venice, Regent’s Park, London Zoo and Camden Lock. Warwick Avenue is the closest tube if you’re catching the boat from Little Venice. There’s no advance-booking option – these tours are first come, first served – so if you arrive at peak time, just before lunch, you might have to queue.

Canal Museum Tunnel Boat Trip

Canal Museum Tunnel Boat Trip

  • King’s Cross

These trips are best suited to the brave. Regent’s Canal’s tunnel – built in 1820 – is long, dark, dank and three quarters of a mile long. Once upon a time, boats normally pulled by horses on the towpath had to be inched through the tunnel by a process of ‘legging’ – with the men on board having to brace their legs against the tunnel walls to power the boat along. The tunnel tours take place during the summer, and tickets also includes admission to the London Canal Museum proper. There are only 12 places on each boat tour, so booking is definitely recommended.

Jason’s Trip

Jason’s Trip

  • Little Venice

Jason’s Trip navigates the picturesque route along Regent’s Canal from Little Venice, through Regent’s Park, on to Camden Lock and back again. The boat is more than 100 years old and the trip, which includes a live historical commentary and lasts for 45min each way, has been a feature on the canal since 1951. Tours run from the first week of April right through to the first week of November.

Jenny Wren

  • Camden Town

Hop aboard for an hour and a half's cruise from Camden Lock, past London Zoo in Regent's Park, through the tunnel to Robert Browning’s Island at Little Venice and back to Walker’s Quay. A commentary is included on the cruise, and picnic lunches are available from the company’s waterside restaurant. If you prefer the idea of more formal onboard dining, try the My Fair Lady cruising restaurant boat, operated by the same company.

Bow Boat Company

Bow Boat Company offers a more bespoke kind of canal tour. Its cute narrowboat seats up to 12 people and can be hired (complete with skipper and tour guide) for special-occasion tours of east London’s waterways. You can decide exactly how long you want to tour for, and precisely where you’d like to stop. The comprehensive ‘east London loop’ takes in everything from the Olympic Park to Victoria Park and stretches out over a leisurely five hours; a shorter tour from Hackney’s buzzy Broadway Market to bustling King’s Cross takes just two hours.

MIAMI — New luxury cruise brand Explora Journeys isn’t counting on experienced cruisers to try out its first ship, Explora I. The new venture created by the people behind MSC Cruises are hunting for people who have never sailed before.

“We have this space for a true European luxury brand that is like a luxury hotel or luxury resort you usually travel to, but on the ocean,” said line CEO Michael Ungerer, speaking aboard the 63,900-gross-ton ship when it arrived to Miami earlier this month to begin a winter sailing season in the Caribbean.

The ship features six restaurants, 12 bars and lounges as well as a chef’s kitchen. The shipwide design is a mix of modern lines, but every space seems filled with unique curiosities that manage to feel like each is on display in a modern museum, not an antique shop.

The color scheme exudes earthy tones. Waltzing through the coffee lounge feels like walking through a caramel-filled chocolate confection. Restaurants have their own individuality such as the monochrome Marble & Co. Grill steakhouse, or the red-and-pink hues with cherry-blossom ceiling found in the Pan-Asian concept Sakura.

The European influence is there as well, from the five kinds of pasta at the buffet to the massive wine displays at each restaurant to the clean marble flooring in the public spaces.

Ungerer says customers it expects to rein in are not necessarily those that have been on ships before, or as an alternative to existing brands because the market opportunity is so huge.

Explora Journeys' first ship Explora I arrives to PortMiami for...

He said before the pandemic, the luxury cruise market had about 800,000 people worldwide sailing, a number that has after the restart grown to 1.3 million. But as teams were surveying potential travelers, the estimated target pool was near 29 million.

“We surveyed about 20,000 qualified potential guests worldwide, of which 97% have never been on a ship yet, and the addressable markets are by selected by high net worth but also by the propensity to travel and by attributes and by benefits ultimately,” he said, and that other research has shown that could grow closer to 45 million.

So with that market research, the first of six planned vessels over the next five years made its debut this year. With a 922-guest capacity and a 1-to-1.25 crew-to-guest ratio, it’s similar to many luxury offerings already sailing.

That includes newcomers Four Seasons and Ritz-Carlton on top of new and revamped ships from existing brands Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Seabourn and Crystal. Ungerer even welcomes the marquee names like Ritz-Carlton.

“To me, those brands, of course, they need to be in this as well,  and it gives validity and importance and permanence to that segment,” he said.

Ahead of its Miami arrival, it made a sailing from Quebec with only about 200 passengers on board.

“I don’t need to price to fill. We said from day one no discounting,” Ungerer said noting the line had already gone through two price hikes so that it’s making the company an average of $650 per person per day. “I would rather have a few suites left and have the right people at the right price.”

That sort of market line in the sand is one benefit Explora Journeys has since it is run by the Italian ship magnate Aponte family, which owns the massive MSC shipping and cruise empire that has been in business for more than 300 years.

“When you build ships and you make a living off the sea, you have to have a long-term view,” Ungerer said. “Especially as a family company and you have only one shareholder you’re responsible to. So they think in generations. They don’t think in quarters.”

With that in mind, the end result is a refined combination of modern luxury, but with detailed touches throughout the ship. That combined with a strategy to sail to destinations on more laid-back itineraries is something Ungerer says will bring customers in.

“That was the idea — traveling slower, lingering longer and going deeper, meaning you have ample time at sea, you arrive later at the destination, you stay overnight,” he said. “I think it’s just the combination of all those factors — that level of thought, and a lot of detail and attention and that sort of planning and curation.”

He pointed out the array of selections on display in the ship’s observation lounge.

“You sit here for instance, and if you look at the materials we use, and the wood floors and the color scheme, and all the different objects, that are not there by surprise or by coincidence. They have been curated. So the owners are very hands-on. It’s also kind of an expression of the way they like to travel,” he said.

Three-year cruise people sold homes to go on is cancelled weeks before departure

A three-year world cruise which passengers paid up to £90,000 to go on has been cancelled weeks before setting sail – because there’s no ship.

Life at Sea Cruises announced the voyage, designed to house remote workers and retirees, in March and took on extra passengers in June after saying it had acquired a larger ship.

The cruise promised to visit 145 countries, allowing passengers to visit 13 of the 14 ‘wonders of the world’ and offering activities like scuba diving.

But after delaying the initial departure date of November 1, the cruise was cancelled altogether on November 17.

Many passengers, some of whom didn’t renew rental leases or sold their homes, have been left without a home after the cruise fell through.

One passenger, who wanted to remain anonymous until they got their refund, told CNN : ‘There’s a whole lot of people right now with nowhere to go, and some need their refund to even plan a place to go – it’s not good right now.’

The ?Life at Sea? ship will set sail from Istanbul in November, traveling to 375 destinations, with stops in 135 countries across all seven continents.

‘I’m very sad, angry and lost,’ said one passenger. ‘I had the next three years of my life planned to live an extraordinary life, and now [I have] nothing. I’m having a hard time moving forward.

‘I was proud and feeling brave, now I don’t trust anyone or anything. I know it’ll work out and life will go on, but I’m uncertain of the direction.’

Another said they felt ‘incredibly sad and incredibly betrayed’.

‘The company seems to have no consideration about what they’ve done to our lives,’ they said, ‘I never imagined I’d be in this position as a senior citizen.’

They also lamented the loss of community that had been built in the run-up to the cruise: ‘I was looking forward to building friendships – that’s what made it different from a regular cruise. We were all of the same mindset and all started with the same thing in common.’

A third, speaking just before the cruise was confirmed as cancelled, said they were feeling ‘let down, deceived and betrayed’.

111 cabins had been sold on the ship, and some passengers are stuck in Istanbul, Turkey, where the cruise was set to depart from.

The voyage was first announced in March, with prices set at $30,000 (£23,700) per year. After announcing they’d acquired a larger vessel with 200 more cabins, they increased the price of the trip to $38,513 (£30,400) per year.

But in a message to passengers Vedat Ugurlu, owner of Life at Sea’s parent firm Miray, said the purchase of the larger ship had fallen through.

He said: ‘Miray is not such a big company to afford to pay $40-50 million for a ship.’

The company, he said, had ‘presented the project to investors, and had official approval from some of them to buy the vessel,’ but after making the down payment those investors ‘declined to support us further due to unrest in the Middle East’.

A day later, Chief Operating Officer Ethem Bayramoglu added: ‘Although we are all disappointed and frustrated that we didn’t sail this time, it is important to us that you feel positive overall about your experience with us.

‘Vedat in particular is still hopeful that Miray will someday soon have an option for you to consider.’

Life at Sea says it will refund passengers, who put down deposits of tens of thousands of dollars – but repayment won’t start until next month, and it will be made in monthly instalments.

The company is also promising to pay for hotel rooms and return plane tickets for passengers in Turkey.

Metro.co.uk checked the Life at Sea website and it’s currently still possible to book cabins on the cancelled cruise.

Life at Sea has been contacted for comment.

Carnival Cruise Line making huge onboard change

Posted: December 1, 2023 | Last updated: December 1, 2023

Cruise ships face some problems that land-based hotels rarely have to deal with.

Traditional hotels, for example, don't have a single day when all guests leave and another group replaces them a few hours later. Sure, hotels might have more turnover on Sundays or the day after a huge event, but even for something like the Super Bowl, not every person staying in Las Vegas for the game will leave on Monday.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line addresses a dress-code controversy

Cruise ships, however, must quickly get their passengers off the ship so they can clean the rooms and bring a new group of customers onboard. Even people sailing on the same ship in the same room on back-to-back cruises need to leave their rooms and go through immigration (which sometimes means leaving the ship and sometimes involves customs officials coming onboard).

That's a daunting process and even the slightest glitch can cause major pain for passengers. If there's a delay getting to the port and getting people off the ship that can lead to new passengers and old passengers being at the port at the same time.

In addition to causing crowding issues, it also means that parking lots have not cleared out for arriving passengers. That can lead to gridlock at the port, impacting not just the affected cruise, but others leaving from the same port.

Here's how Royal Caribbean disembarkation works

Every cruise line handles embarkation and disembarkation differently. In a broad sense, however, passengers on Carnival Cruise Line ( CCL ) - Get Free Report , Royal Caribbean, MSC, and even Virgin Voyages have the same general disembarkation choices. Passengers can opt to walk off with their own luggage,

On Royal Caribbean ships, passengers who opt to have the cruise line handle their luggage get luggage tags in their room the night before the cruise ends. Those tags have a number that will ultimately help the passenger know when to leave.

People who opt for the assisted departure pack their bags, put the luggage tags on their bags, and leave those bags outside their rooms on the last night. Porters collect those bags and ultimately deliver them to the cruise terminal the next day.

Each tag has a number and Royal Caribbean shows where each numbered group can wait after passengers have to vacate their cabins. On the departure day, the cruise line uses one of its in-house television channels to share expected departure times for each numbered group and the designated waiting spots.

Carnival makes a disembarkation change

Carnival has begun rolling out a new disembarkation program that uses its app to control the process, Cruise Hive reported.

"We always want debarkation to be as easy as possible. Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not," said Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald shared on his Facebook page. "I wanted to let you know that we are rolling out a new debarkation system for those guests who put their luggage outside of their cabin door and want to choose what time they will disembark."

Under the new system. guests will pick a departure time on the Carnival Hub app and to receive notifications on the app as to when they can leave the ship.

The current disembarkation process requires guests to go to guest services to get luggage tags. That can create long lines and backups, at a time when guest services is also busy. Luggage tags will be delivered to the passengers' cabins based on the selection people make in the app.

Carnival is currently testing what it's calling "Digital Debark" on four ships, Conquest, Spirit, Dream, and Elation. It plans to slowly role it out across the fleet, but has not shared a timetable for the change, according to Heald.

Digital Debark will not impact passengers who opt to walk their own luggage off the ship.
