Celebrity Cruises in Alaska: Guide and what you need to know

Celebrity cruise ship in Alaska

Celebrity Cruises is known as an award-winning cruise line that provides upscale cruise experiences, and their sailings to Alaska are no exception.

They offer their guests the opportunity to discover the wild beauty of the Last Frontier with 6 and 7-day cruises along with optional land tours for a more immersive experience and the chance to explore the wonders of the Last Frontier.

With its growing fleet, Celebrity is sending three ships to Alaska for the upcoming cruise season , including the acclaimed Celebrity Edge, the first in its revolutionary series of ships that has won many awards. With 8 different itineraries , sailing both the Inside Passage and the Gulf of Alaska, there are ample ways to explore Alaska's ports of call and see its majestic glacial landscapes.

Since there are quite a few different options for a Celebrity cruise to Alaska, here is a breakdown of what you need to know when choosing an unforgettable Alaska cruise vacation.

Celebrity’s sailings to Alaska

Family excursion

For the upcoming Alaska cruise season, Celebrity has three of its award-winning ships sailing to Alaska, including Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, and Celebrity Edge. All of these ships provide incredible onboard amenities and activities, including the cruise line’s renowned food and dining experiences.

With a number of cruises of the Inside Passage as well as sailings farther north to the Gulf of Alaska, Celebrity visits numerous fantastic ports of call as well as scenic viewing of glaciers such as Hubbard Glacier and Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier.

All of Celebrity's cruises to Alaska are 6 or 7 days, although there is the option to add land tours on southbound or northbound itineraries, with as much as a week to explore the interior region and Alaska in more depth. Embarkation for Celebrity’s Alaska cruises includes major port cities like Seattle and Vancouver or Seward , Alaska, for southbound sailings. Seattle can be very convenient for departure as it has many affordable flight options. For those who depart from Vancouver, a passport is required to fly into this Canadian port from the United States.

Celebrity’s Alaska itineraries

Dawes

Celebrity has numerous sailings throughout the Alaska cruise season with 8 different itineraries that sail both the Inside Passage and Gulf Of Alaska.

Most Celebrity's cruises are weeklong cruises, sailing roundtrip from Seattle or Vancouver. Celebrity also has its “Alaska Dawes Glacier" cruises, which are one-way cruises, either northbound or southbound, starting or ending in Seward, Alaska. The cruise line also offers a 6-night sailing.

Celebrity sails to several ports of call, including Ketchikan , Sitka , Juneau , Icy Strait Point , Skagway , Victoria, and Vancouver, Canada, with numerous excursion options. Scenic cruising of the incredible 30-mile Endicott Arm fjord to face Dawes Glacier, a 600-foot-tall wall of ice, is a can't-miss opportunity to see one of Alaska's top natural wonders. Other Alaska cruise highlights include charming coastal towns and plenty of chances to see local marine and animal life, including whales and bears.

Celebrity’s Alaska excursions

Bear

Celebrity offers a huge variety of excursions for guests to enjoy. They are categorized as sustainable, multi-day, wellness, culinary, cultural, adventure, aquatic, sightseeing, wildlife ,  flightseeing, and accessible. They also have Private Journeys, where the cruise line can create your own specific excursion that meets your interests and schedule. Another good option are their smaller group tours, which enhance the onshore experience without the hassles of dealing with being part of a larger group. Some highlights include:

  • Visit the Tongass National Forest, which covers close to half of the state and includes the largest temperate rainforest in the world.
  • See, learn, and interact with wildlife, including the majestic whales of the region, such as humpbacks and orcas, with a number of guided excursions on luxury catamarans, Zodiacs, and special safari vessels that visit well-known feeding grounds for whales.
  • Thrill-seeking activities, such as flightseeing, get the most majestic views of the rugged landscape, fjords , and glaciers . How about a helicopter ride to a glacier or ride the world’s longest ZipRyder at Icy Strait Point?
  • Enjoy world-class fishing and get the catch of a lifetime – salmon, halibut, Arctic Char, and others, depending on the season and location.
  • Explore the history and rich culture of Alaska with exceptional immersive excursions to watch, listen, see, and taste the story of the ancient Tlingit tribe through tours of villages and clan houses, totem carving demos, storytelling, and sampling of native foods.
  • Try some of the tastiest local cruising, including feasting on the freshest line-caught salmon, grilled to perfection and served in park-like outdoor settings or rustic lodges in view of a massive glacier.

Celebrity’s add-on land tours

Train

Celebrity's add-on land tours, "cruise tours" as they refer to it, give guests the opportunity to extend their cruise by as much as a week. On land, cruisers stay in authentic lodges and travel remote roads and railways in deluxe motor coaches and on a luxurious train with domed glass ceilings enough to places like Anchorage , Talkeetna, Denali , Fairbanks , Homer, and Alyeska.

Accommodations for land tours are among the best lodgings available in the Alaksa interior with boutique style and local properties range from the luxurious Alyeska Resort, whose amenities include a heated pool with mountain views, to the charmingly rustic Denali Park Village, whose buildings are tucked into a forested 20-acre site along the Nenana River.

Another highlight for land tours is the Wilderness Express, where passengers travel from Anchorage to Fairbanks with 360-degree windows and onboard cuisine.

Celebrity ships sailing to Alaska

Celebrity edge.

Celebrity Edge

Launched in December 2018, Celebrity Edge was the first in the newest class of ships, which redefined Celebrity ships with their bold new and innovative style. The ship can accommodate 2,918 passengers, moderate by today’s standards, but it is the largest of Celebrity's ships sailing to Alaska.

The ship has won numerous awards thanks to its sophisticated design and upscale cruising experience, including numerous food and beverage options. The outward-focused ship has incredible floor-to-ceiling windows in its atrium, along with Eden and Magic Carpet spaces, making for great viewing opportunities of Alaska’s incredible scenery.

Celebrity Solstice

Solstice

Celebrity Solstice was launched in 2008, has a capacity of 2,852, and is about 7% smaller than Celebrity Edge. It has also won several awards, specifically for its food and wine. There are numerous cabin options , including the cruise line’s celebrated Retreat area, as well as Concierge and Aquaclass staterooms. It was last refurbished in 2016, adding a  number of enhancements and updates. Cruisers love its spacious open areas and rooftop spaces, including a real grass lawn. Inside, guests can enjoy and relax in the solarium, which has its own waterfalls.

Celebrity Summit is one of the first resorts at sea to receive a Recommended Rating from Forbes Travel Guide, a prestigious honor.

What to know when picking a Celebrity cruise to Alaska

Fjord

Celebrity is known for its sophisticated ships and focus on service. For those who love upscale ship amenities while cruising Alaska, Celebrity is a great choice. The cruise line provides for a more quiet and relaxed cruise experience. With a couple of different ships to choose from, including the popular Celebrity Edge, it can make for a perfect Alaska cruise vacation. Some points to consider when booking a Celebrity cruise for your Alaska cruise vacation:

  • Many Celebrity cruises tend to be popular with the 40/50+ age demographic, but families are welcome. While they do have complimentary kids programs onboard. Their ships do lack many of the bells and whistles, such as sky-high slides, waterparks, splash pads, and rock climbing. This is something to consider for families traveling with kids who may miss those signature onboard activities found on Carnival Cruise Line , Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean ships.
  • Celebrity cruise fares can be higher priced than the other major cruise lines, but they do offer a number of ongoing promotions, which makes it more affordable than people might think. Currently, there are cruises for the 2024 Alaska season that start as low as $295 per person for a weeklong cruise.
  • North or southbound cruises provide add-on tours, which can be a great way to explore in more depth, especially areas in the interior that are farther from cruise ports of call. Celebrity arranges all of the transportation, including trains, high end logging, and expert guides to accompany the tours.
  • Celebrity has a wide variety of cabin options, including luxurious suites, for those who want to splurge, with incredible in-cabin views of Alaska.

Inside Passage, AK

Many Alaska cruise itineraries sail the waterways of the Inside Passage, which stretches from Washington's Puget Sound up through Southeast Alaska's panhandle. As ships glide across the reliably smooth waters, passengers have plenty of opportunity to absorb the transforming terrain and abundant wildlife that Alaska has to offer. Scenic views comprise an ever-changing landscape of charming coastal towns, towering forest walls and imperious glaciers. Be sure to search the sky for bald eagles and watch the water for signs of sea lions, otters and whales.

Inside Passage Cruises

Map of Alaska

Alaska, America's "Last Frontier," is home to craggy glaciers, raging rivers, snow-capped mountains and miles upon miles of wild, windblown tundra. The state shares a border and much of its topographical characteristics with western Canada -- specifically, the snowy provinces of British Columbia and the Yukon.

Inside Passage cruises sail along the state's southeastern coast, from the cannery town of Ketchikan to Glacier Bay National Park. Alaska cruise tours, meanwhile, skim the coastline as well as explore the state's vast interior. Common targets for these vacations are Denali National Park, about 150 miles north of Anchorage, and Fairbanks, a former Gold Rush town some 200 miles northeast of Denali. Some cruise tours even cross the border into Canada, making stops as far east as Calgary, Jasper and Lake Louise, all popular points in the province of Alberta.

Experience the Best of Alaska by land and sea on a Celebrity Cruisetour

On an Alaska cruise, you’ll journey along the state’s southeastern coastline aboard award-winning ships experiencing the beauty of glaciers, nature’s ever-changing and fragile masterpieces. But, with a Celebrity Alaska Cruisetour, you’ll explore that and so much more.

With one of our 9-to-13-night Alaska Cruisetours, you can combine your seven-night Alaska cruise with an exciting land tour where you’ll stay in authentic lodges and travel remote roads and railways in deluxe motor coaches and on a luxurious train with domed glass ceiling. A Cruisetour will offer opportunities to take you to destinations like cultured Anchorage, folksy Talkeetna, and wild Denali—a visit to these inland areas truly give you a feel for the diverse beauty of the 49th State.

And, you’ll travel with a local. Few people know and love Alaska like those who live there, and the Tour Directors on a Celebrity Alaska Cruisetour are chosen for their deep roots and connections to the local communities. Part raconteur of everyday Alaskan life. Part wildlife hobbyist. Part concierge, taking care of the small details like hotel check-in. The dedicated Tour Directors on a Celebrity Cruisetour are passionate about sharing their home, and bringing you seamless service, local knowledge, and the best of the interior.

Mother Nature truly puts on a show in Alaska. Massive open spaces, ancient forests, soaring mountains and salmon-filled rivers create exceptionally rugged, untamed beauty. Alaska has more than 57 million acres of wilderness: watersheds, mountain ranges, glaciers, wetlands, coastlines, volcanoes, tundra, and forests. It’s home to eight national parks, 100,000 glaciers, and more than 98 percent of the United States’ brown bear population.

Pristine environmental conditions make Alaska well known for its abundant wildlife. Alaska's parks provide you with up-close experiences with wildlife unlike anywhere else in the country. Getting to see a majestic brown bear snatching salmon from an Alaska stream is the memory of a lifetime. But as iconic as these massive land predators are, they're just the start of what Alaska has to offer. Keep your eyes open for bald eagles, black bears, caribou, humpback whales, orcas, and, of course, moose.

With thirty different mountain ranges and the top ten tallest peaks in North America, Alaska is a land of spectacular peaks and valleys. The Alaska Range reaches from the coastline to the interior regions and includes Denali, its showpiece mountain. At 20,320 feet, Denali is North America’s highest peak. The mountain known as the Great One towers over the surrounding Alaska Range. The view on a clear day is an intensely impressive sight.

Featured Cruisetours

The Alaskan cross-country journey is as inspiring as the destinations you’ll explore. A highlight of every Celebrity Cruisetour is a scenic ride on the railway from Anchorage to Fairbanks. Relax aboard the Wilderness Express railcars which offer 360-degree views from dome windows and reclining leather seats. Enjoy fine cuisine in the dining section, along with full bar service at your seat, while you learn about the wilderness and the region’s rich history.

All Celebrity Alaska Cruisetours include a rail experience that typically lasts for three to five hours; the below Cruisetours have extended rail experiences or multiple segments.

Denali National Park is home to Denali, the majestic 20,310-ft. high mountain formerly known as Mount McKinley and the tallest peak in North America. Spanning six million acres, the park’s terrain of tundra, spruce forest, and glaciers make it the perfect place to spot Alaska's Big 5— grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou and Dall’s sheep.

The largest city in Alaska, Anchorage, is surrounded by the Chugach mountains and national park as well as Cook Inlet offering a variety of outdoor activities from hiking, biking, moose watching, boating and more. For those looking to learn more about the native people, make sure to stop at the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

In sight of the great mountain, Talkeetna offers breathtaking views, a folksy frontier spirit, endless outdoor activities, and the unique ambience of its eclectic Main Street. Among climbers, Talkeetna is the ideal staging ground for preparations to summit Denali. Main Street’s log cabin cafés provide a place where you can mill with the bohemians, aviators, and adventurers who call the town home.

Departure ports.

There are two cruise departure ports you can choose from depending on whether you want to do your Cruisetour before or after your cruise. If you do your Cruisetour before your sailing, your trip will start in either Anchorage or Fairbanks and after the land portion you will board the ship in Seward for your 7-night sailing.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Tucked among snowcapped mountains, beaches and a rainforest, Vancouver, offers a wide variety of activities. You’ll have a chance to venture into nature with whale-watching, hiking, and kayaking or explore the city’s history and culinary side before or after your  Alaska cruise from Vancouver , with an Alaska Cruisetour.

Seward, Alaska

Charming Seward is located on an inlet in the Kenai Peninsula and Resurrection Bay. Here you can sail through the breathtaking Kenai Fjords National Park taking in the views of the fjord and captivating variety of marine life– orcas, puffins, seals, Dall's sheep, and more. Seward is also the starting point of the Alaska railroad connecting it to Anchorage and further north, a much-loved component on our Cruisetours. From here, you can enjoy an Alaska Cruisetour before or after your Celebrity Summit sailing.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Celebrity Cruises ship

Gene Sloan

Like many of the seven big lines that account for the majority of cruises taken by North Americans, Celebrity Cruises offers a wide range of itineraries. You'll find Celebrity ships in almost every corner of the world at some point during the year.

Still, the line's heaviest presence, by far, is in the Caribbean, Europe and Alaska. In a typical summer, the line will deploy seven of its 13 main vessels to Europe, while sending another three to Alaska. That leaves just three vessels free to assign to the Caribbean and Bahamas as well as a few other places such as Bermuda and Canada.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

During the winter, the line will move most of these ships to the Caribbean but also send a few to more far-flung destinations such as Asia and Australia.

For the coming winter, nine of the line's 13 main ships are scheduled to sail in the Caribbean, and there will be three ships visiting Asia and Australia.

Celebrity is also a major player in Galapagos sailings, with three additional small vessels based in the destination year-round.

In all, Celebrity ships sail to nearly 80 countries in a typical year, hitting all seven continents. They visit more than 300 different ports and cruise destinations. Those are large numbers, but they're not quite as large as what you'll find at some of Celebrity's biggest competitors. Celebrity doesn't offer as big a range of itineraries as Princess Cruises and Holland America , for instance.

Among the best Celebrity Cruises itineraries, you'll find everything from two-night sampler cruises to the Bahamas to 18-night voyages to Hawaii and the South Pacific. That said, Celebrity isn't known for the sort of multimonth voyages and around-the-world sailings that are a hallmark of Holland America's schedule. Most of the line's itineraries are in the one- to two-week range.

For the best Celebrity Cruises destinations for your next sailing, check out our five favorites.

Some of Celebrity's most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It will typically deploy more than half of its 13 big ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year.

The itineraries that Celebrity offers in Europe are wide-ranging, with a diverse set of routings in both the Mediterranean as well as across Northern Europe.

In the Mediterranean, the line offers everything from six- to 14-night voyages that offer the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona; Rome, Florence and Venice in Italy; and Dubrovnik, Croatia, in a single cruise.

Related: The ultimate guide to Celebrity Cruises

Or you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek islands. Some Eastern Mediterranean cruises that Celebrity offers include stops in Israel and Turkey.

In Northern Europe, Celebrity will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki (until a couple years ago, the line's Baltic itineraries included stops at St. Petersburg, Russia, but those sailings are on hold for now due to the war in Ukraine). Itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Norwegian fjords also are available.

Among the longest sailings Celebrity offers in Europe is an unusual 14-night "Iceland and Ireland" trip out of Amsterdam that brings stops at Cork in Ireland; Belfast, Northern Ireland; Akureyri, Isafjorder and Reykjavík in Iceland; Lerwick in the Shetland Islands; and Inverness, Scotland.

In Northern Europe, Celebrity ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam and Southampton, England.

In the Mediterranean, the line's hubs are Southampton; Amsterdam; Barcelona; Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens); and Ravenna and Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) in Italy.

The line also offers some sailings out of Lisbon.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

celebrity alaska cruise map

Come winter, Celebrity turns its focus to Caribbean and Bahamas sailings. While the line typically only deploys one vessel to the Caribbean and Bahamas during the summer, it moves the lion's share of its ships to the region during the winter.

For the coming winter, for instance, the line will have nine of its 13 big ships sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas — including its three newest ships, the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Ascent, 3,260-passenger Celebrity Beyond and 2,910-passenger Celebrity Apex.

Celebrity offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from three main home ports, all in Florida — Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades ; Port Canaveral and the Port of Tampa. It also offers Caribbean sailings out of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Related: The 4 types of Celebrity Cruises ships, explained

If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of quick three-night trips to ports in the Bahamas and Florida out of Fort Lauderdale and Port Canaveral. But it also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a number of longer 10-night and 11-night trips in the region.

At the core of the line's Caribbean and Bahamas program are a diverse collection of six- to nine-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Celebrity sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Nassau in the Bahamas.

A typical seven-night Celebrity sailing in the Western Caribbean might include stops at Key West, Florida; Cozumel, Mexico; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Falmouth, Jamaica.

The line's Southern Caribbean itineraries, which can be as long as 11 nights, will bring visits to such destinations as Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

Celebrity isn't the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America, which together control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Celebrity typically sends three of its 13 big ships to Alaska every summer, making it a not-insignificant operator in the area.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to September. For 2025, Celebrity plans to deploy these three ships to the Alaska market during those months:

  • Celebrity Edge: The 2,908-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round-trip out of Seattle. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Ketchikan and Skagway and Victoria, British Columbia. It'll also visit Endicott Arm for glacier viewing.
  • Celebrity Solstice: The 2,850-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round-trip out of Vancouver, British Columbia. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Icy Strait Point, Skagway and either Juneau or Ketchikan. It'll also visit either Endicott Arm or Hubbard Glacier for glacier viewing.
  • Celebrity Summit: The 2,218-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. It'll feature calls at Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point in Alaska. It'll also visit Hubbard Glacier for glacier viewing.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Celebrity Summit is that they can be combined with Celebrity-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night "cruisetours."

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

Celebrity is one of the biggest operators of cruises around the Galapagos, the wildlife-filled archipelago in the Pacific Ocean made famous by Charles Darwin.

Almost no major cruise lines offer voyages around the Galapagos due to local regulations that limit the number and size of vessels operating in the destination. But over the years Celebrity has jumped into the market in a huge way with first one, then two and now three very small vessels dedicated to the destination full-time.

The first thing you need to know about these three vessels is that the cruise experience they offer is very different from what you'll experience on Celebrity's other vessels. Just because you love cruising with Celebrity in Europe or the Caribbean doesn't mean you'll automatically love sailing with the line in the Galapagos.

Related: The ultimate guide to Celebrity cabins and suites

For starters, the three Galapagos vessels are significantly smaller than Celebrity's traditional ships. They hold just 16 to 100 passengers, compared to the 2,000 to 3,000 passengers that typically will be aboard Celebrity's larger ships. This is in keeping with local regulations that say cruise vessels can't carry more than 100 passengers.

Because of their small size, these three Galapagos vessels have far fewer onboard amenities than the bigger Celebrity ships.

But cruising in the Galapagos isn't about the onboard experience. It's about seeing the incredible wildlife that inspired Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection.

Related: Celebrity to withdraw two vessels from Galapagos in 2025

To that end, all three of Celebrity's Galapagos vessels are expedition cruise vessels — the kind that carry landing craft on board for exploring in remote areas and sail with specialized guides.

Voyages on the three vessels (they're really too small to call ships) revolve around daily landings with these guides — all Galapagos National Park-certified naturalists — to view the destination's famous land iguanas, tortoises, blue-footed boobies and Darwin's finches.

The most recently built of the vessels, the 100-passenger Celebrity Flora, is one of the newest and most luxurious vessels in the Galapagos. It boasts two penthouse suites spanning the entire width of the ship. Each measures 1,300 square feet. All other accommodations are suites, too.

celebrity alaska cruise map

Celebrity has a long history of offering voyages to Bermuda, with at least one ship on Bermuda runs every year out of Cape Liberty, New Jersey (one of the ports in the New York City area).

For 2025, the line has scheduled its 3,324-passenger Celebrity Silhouette to sail to Bermuda out of Cape Liberty, with most of its sailings to the destination lasting seven nights.

The seven-night Bermuda sailings only will include a single, extended stop in Bermuda. During these trips, Celebrity Silhouette will spend the better part of three days at the destination, with the rest of the seven days taken up with the long open-water sailings to and from the island.

Related: Celebrity Cruises Captain's Club loyalty program guide

Celebrity Silhouette in 2025 also will offer a single 10-night Bermuda sailing that adds a two-day stop in Charleston, South Carolina, and a day visit to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. That's an unusual differentiator from the Bermuda cruises offered by other lines.

All of Celebrity's Bermuda trips in 2025 will take place in May and June.

Bottom line

Celebrity offers a wide range of itineraries in cruise destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you'll find the most choices among Celebrity itineraries in the Caribbean, Europe and Alaska. The line is also well-known for voyages to the Galapagos and Bermuda. Its significant focus on Galapagos sailings, in particular, is something that sets it apart from other big lines.
