Immersive VR Experiences for Middle and High School Students

A library media specialist shares how to create engaging cross-curricular virtual reality tours for students.

Illustration of kids wearing VR headsets

What better way to learn about evolutionary traits than to see them firsthand? With the help of virtual reality (VR), educators can add engaging virtual reality experiences to their classroom, whisking students away to faraway places without ever leaving their desk. Students can travel all the way to the Galápagos and beyond.

After Google pulled the plug on their VR apps, I found myself—a media specialist—sitting next to a now-useless Google Expeditions kit and wondering how I could continue creating VR tours for my elementary students. While perusing an ISTE blog , I came across Expeditions Pro , a new app promising educators the opportunity to create, share, and guide classroom VR tours. The app is free to download, and all of its content is currently free as well.

Expeditions Pro is not only compatible with our Google Expeditions kit but also works with Google Cardboard and other low-tech VR goggles, thus ensuring that all students will have the same experience regardless of device, as long as they are connected to a guided tour.

Getting Started

To begin, educators need to create an Expeditions Pro account and download the app on their teacher tablets and student devices. Student devices will only need to sign in using the Expeditions Pro guest account, as their tours will be guided by the educator.

Similar to Google Expeditions, when the tour starts, a code pops up on the student devices, allowing them to connect with the tour. Educators can create their own tours or browse and guide public tours, like my Galápagos Archipelago tour.

Before creating your own VR tour in Expeditions Pro, I suggest creating an outline in Google Docs, listing out the scenes with your 360-degree photos, showing points of interest with your close-up photos, and writing out all of your titles, descriptions, and talking points.

As I created my VR tour, I was constantly moving things around and having to reupload and rewrite my descriptions. By creating an outline, you’ll avoid all of this unnecessary hassle, and your VR tour information and files will be organized and ready before you begin creating it with Expeditions Pro.

After you download the guided tour on your teacher tablet—to avoid a traffic jam with your wireless network—if you’re able to, I suggest plugging in a separate wireless router and connecting your teacher tablet and VR devices to it. This wireless router does not need to be connected to the internet after the tour has been downloaded, and student devices do not need an internet connection to connect to the Expeditions Pro guest account and guided tours.

If you are an educator who is looking to add immersive cross-curricular experiences into your classroom, Expeditions Pro is just what you need. I took the leap of faith, created an account, installed the app on all of my Google Expeditions devices, and built a cross-curricular lesson merging AASL , ISTE , and NGSS standards that students absolutely loved.

Using VR to Teach Evolutionary Traits in the Galápagos

To help third-grade students understand the complex topics of trait variation and biological evolution, I used Expeditions Pro to create a VR lesson, utilizing 360-degree photos from the Galápagos Archipelago. This VR tour allowed students to immerse themselves in Bartolomé Island, Isabela Island, Santa Cruz Island, and Santiago Island, where they learned how environmental conditions greatly impact the evolution of Galápagos sea lions, blue-footed boobies, lava lizards, giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and Galápagos penguins (NGSS 3-LS3-2).

My goals for this lesson were to activate and build upon students’ scientific knowledge; engage them in an inquiry-based interactive experience that allowed them to share, connect, and learn from their peers; and empower them to want to learn more (AASL 5.A.3, ISTE 1-7-a).

While guiding students through Tortuga Bay on Santa Cruz Island, I asked them to take a minute to observe the environment around them and be prepared to share what they noticed and what they were curious about. With the app, I was able to zoom in on points of interest, which are controlled by the educator guiding the tour, so they can decide which points to direct students to and for how long. This is especially helpful if you are short on time or only want to highlight a specific topic or species.

An underwater photo of a marine iguana eating algae off the rocks was a point of interest I wanted my students to focus on while I asked the question, “What do you think marine iguanas evolved to do and why?” As students adjusted to the new underwater scene, I could hear their excitement as they tried to determine an answer:

“Look at him, he’s underwater!”

“How can he swim? I thought lizards were cold-blooded?”

“Why is it eating underwater?” “Maybe there’s no food for it on land.”

When I simply provided them with a question to think about while exploring, my students began collaborating as they tried to determine the evolutionary traits of marine iguanas. Using Expeditions Pro, I was able to embed questions, talking points, and points of interest, all of which popped up on my tablet as I guided my students on the tour. These features allowed me to ensure that my students were taking the time they needed to understand the standards behind our lesson.

I was also able to pause the tour at any time to regain the attention of my excited students.

Virtual Tours of High Schools

Hi everyone and welcome back to another Momentum Monday. Here at Momentum 360, we’ve been hard at work expanding our business all over the country while still maintaining the same high standards we set for ourselves to meet client needs.

Currently, we have 30 locations spread out all over the continental United States plus Canada! Check out the complete list of locations on our website. We’re so excited for these new locations and can’t wait to service even more areas. As the weather grows colder and concerns over the Coronavirus remain on everyone’s mind, we think it’s more important than ever for your business to invest in a virtual tour.

In this week’s blog post, we are going to be discussing the benefits of having a virtual tour in high schools. This is a little different than the properties we’re used to talking about, but is just as important as virtual tours in residential or commercial real estate, retail, or restaurants. For blogs detailing the benefits of virtual tours in other industries check out earlier posts:

Virtual Tours for Colleges

What Industries Benefit Most from a Virtual Tour

Because of the Coronavirus, many college campuses across the country have ceased to have in-person tours or open houses. These schools have elected to do all of this virtually to minimize the spread of the virus. As most people rely on tours and information sessions to decide which college they would like to attend, these universities have had to utilize virtual tour technology so that prospective students can still get a feel for the campus, the academic and recreational facilities, and the overall vibe of the students already attending the school.

No one can deny that colleges had to step up their game and use virtual tours when they can’t have more people coming to campus, but here at Momentum 360, we’d go a step further and say that high schools should also be investing in this resource. Here’s why.

Decision Making

Depending on where you live, deciding which high school is right for you or your child may not be as straightforward as it seems. In suburban and rural areas, most students simply continue on at the public school in their district. There isn’t much of an option in these areas, unless you decide to forego public school and wish to enroll in a private or religious school. In cities, the decision is a little more complicated, with options ranging from public schools, private schools, religious schools, charter schools, or specialty schools (STEM, theater, technical schools, etc.)

There are many factors that go into choosing the right school for you. One of which is cost. It is no secret that most private education is expensive and that public schools are funded by tax dollars. Many people simply do not have the money to afford the tuition at these private schools.

Another factor that goes into the decision-making process is the results generated by the school, whether it be standardized test scores, athletic accomplishments, or the percentage of graduates that go on to higher education or into the work force.

Finally, one important factor is the resources offered by the school. “Resources,” when talked about in this context, is basically an all-encompassing word for how much funding the school gets and how much of that money is poured back into the students. This can be anything from facilities to educational materials to extracurricular events, and more.

A virtual tour can go a long way in highlighting these resources available for students and can really show off the school even if prospective students can’t see it in person.

A big reason why some students elect to go to a high school outside of their district’s public school is for athletic purposes. Though there are rules regulating or even prohibiting high schools from recruiting student athletes, much of the draw for students comes from well-performing athletic programs. Whether it is a basketball court, a football stadium, a swimming facility, or some other type of athletic stadium, the grounds on which athletes will be playing can influence their decision.

Some students, assuming they have the means to do so, will attend high schools hours away from their homes for the benefit of progressing athletically. Private schools also have more reach when it comes to college recruitment, which is a big plus for those looking to play sports in college.

Recently, Momentum 360 created virtual tours for Paul VI High School, a Catholic high school in Haddonfield, New Jersey. The 3D tours highlight all different aspects of the school including the lobby, dance studio, science labs, gymnasium, chapel, robotics lab, auditorium, and more. This allows prospective students to see what the school is like, how it is set up, and what kinds of facilities are set up to help its students succeed.

Check out the Paul VI High School virtual tours!

These tours are set up to not only showcase the different areas of the school, but also to provide information about the history, programs, and COVID-19 social distancing measures. It’s a really easy way to give people more information while still protecting the safety of potential visitors, students, and staff at Paul VI.

All in all, having a virtual tour is just as important on a high school campus as it is on a college campus, and our team would be happy to help you get started.

3d virtual tours for schools: a 24/7 open day.

' src=

Education, education, education – it’s every child’s right to have one. However, starting school for the first time or entering a new school can be daunting. What can schools do to make it easier for their future students?

We’ve witnessed how quickly things change in the Covid-19 pandemic. Many industries were hit hard, and only those who adjusted to new circumstances came out as winners. Schools are no different. The biggest obstacles were definitely restrictions in terms of how to safely show school facilities without risking anyone’s health.

But is this relevant only when the global pandemic strikes? Schools don’t have to be limited to open days and school tours. As educational institutions, schools need to set an example and quickly adjust to new technologies and make it easier for students, pandemic or not.

Virtual tours for schools are an easy way to amaze students with access to school facilities 365 days a year, 24/7. Students and parents could explore the school from the comfort of their own homes, while school staff wouldn’t be overwhelmed with excess work.

Put Students at Ease With Virtual Tours for Schools

Open days and traditional school tours not only present health risks but also logistical barriers. Why would students and parents go through a struggle to visit the school, when they can easily explore it in their free time?

Some students may not be able to see their classroom and school before it starts. This will make their life harder, as they’ll feel anxious about what to expect. And starting education at a new school should be one of the happiest and most exciting moments of a child’s life.

This is especially relevant to young, vulnerable students and those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Virtual tours for schools are the ultimate solution. Why?

It’s safe, it’s reliable and high-quality school virtual tours will get students excited about what’s to come. They’ll explore with their friends & family a new learning environment where they’ll spend years of their lives, making new friends, falling in love, and learning invaluable information.

Children are great with technology. They adjust more quickly than adults. By giving them a chance to navigate the school facilities, hallways and seeing their school with virtual school tours, your school will be cool in their eyes instead of boring.

A 3D virtual tour of your school is the first step in building the ever-important relationship between a school, the pupils, and their families. Help students feel more at ease in these uncertain times by offering 3D virtual school tours.

Virtual Tours for Schools Highlight Your Facilities and Expertise

Worried about how you’re going to showcase your school’s high-spec science labs, brand-new gymnasium, or art and design studios if open days aren’t an option?

Virtual tours for schools created by professionals are high-resolution and interactive, with the possibility to add interactive data points to highlight the key features. Do your school justice with school virtual tours, don’t just take pictures and call it a day.

Virtual tours for schools are meant to be as engaging as possible, and seamlessly incorporate different media types into the virtual tour itself. What does this mean?

A walkthrough experience is more enticing than traditional photography and gives viewers a unique insight into your school environment and facilities.

For example, insert a video of your science labs in action so potential students can see what their science lessons will be like. These can be implemented anywhere you’d like, to give your students an even clearer picture of what your school is all about!

3D virtual tour for schools shows a classroom

Schools can show their facilities in an interactive way

School Virtual Tours Take Accessibility to the Next Level

It’s not just about bragging about how great your school is, and what facilities it has. Something that’s often overlooked is displaying how accessible your school is for students with disabilities and SEND.

Many schools are looking to boost their inclusivity. Highlighting the adjustments your school made to make it as accessible as possible should be a top priority. Make it easy for those students by showing them they’ll easily adjust to the new learning environment.

Whether it’s simply accessible routes for wheelchair users to get around, or interactive whiteboards and other learning tools to support students with dyslexia – demonstrate all of these great benefits in a virtual school tour.

Parents and other family members want to see how the school will cater to their child’s specific needs way before they start school. It’s the factor they take into account when they decide where their children will go to school. Why not make the most out of virtual tours for schools by including data points to signpost these so parents will clearly see how you’ll support their child ?

Show the parents your school is more than capable of providing the best learning environment, facilities, and conditions in which their child will flourish!

How to Create Virtual Tours for Schools That Attract Students?

Focus on parents, not school.

Parents are the ones who make the decision about where their children will go to school. Keep them in mind when creating virtual tours for schools. What they’d like to see? What’s important to them? Answer their most burning questions with virtual tours for schools by highlighting key features and incorporating different media throughout the virtual tour.

Sell the experience

Virtual tours for schools offer an immersive experience for students to feel the atmosphere of the place where they’ll spend the majority of their time before they step foot in there. Make it count by bringing the experience of attending your school one step closer to them by pointing out all the benefits with a show, don’t tell attitude.

Not many schools decide to provide their students with school virtual tours. By including one on your website, you’ll attract more potential students, and stand out from other schools they’re considering. It will increase the chances to choose your school, and not the other way around!

Clarity wins

Include a call to action – whether it’s to fill out an online application or a meeting with admissions. Remove the noise and explain the next steps.

Make every corner count by hiring professionals for school virtual tours

At Scene3D we’re always looking to take on more exciting projects to help you get the most out of your space. We have vast experience in creating virtual tours for schools and are happy to provide these solutions for a variety of budgets.
