help shifter is stuck in park

i had a remote starter installed and every thing was fine and when it was time to be pulled out the shifter was locked. remote starter is disconnected and still does it . the traction control and brake assistance lights are on in the dash. there is power at the brake switch and brake lights come on when pedal is pressed. basically the shifter solonied is not getting power to release the shifter. any clue anyone ive checked all the fuses and they are all good.

ive been told by a few people to disconnect the battery and touch the 2 ends together for a bit and it will clear everything and hopefully fixes the locked shifter

Sounds as if the installer messed up your DJ can.t help other to suggest

you bite the bullet and get it to dealer and if you read the manual it tells

you how to manually release the shifter lock solenoid,on the MY11 it's

in the console storage box not sure about the MY10.

I would not be so fast to blame the installer. I have a 2010 DJ that worked fine last night but this morning it will not shift out of park. No modifications to vehicle and less than 100k miles on it.

The owners manual tells you how to bypass the shifter locking

solenoid as I stated in post #3 this thread , don't have the manual

download it from Chrysler/Dodge.com .

I down loaded Manuel got the information on how to by pass locking thanks as I see they have recalls on a few cars with the same defective part being pastic new part is aluminum no recalls on DJ and yet still using this defective part in these cars

As the Manuel shows a plastic pink thing well guess its not there its must of broke and fell off but I move the spring forward and she shiftes why are they still using a defective part in these cars as it only a matter of time before its breaks some models were on a recall for this so they know the plastic part is defective should start a class action law

It's a common problem across all Chrysler products. It's a little plastic lever that breaks over time from use. It's like this thing.

Any one know how to insult the unlock key for shifter the pink plastic thing is there a video on utube

I dont have access to you tube at work but you can search for a video yourself.

I have the same problem with my DJ 2010 shifter stuck in park we took the plastic molding off around the shifter and use screw driver to move shifter the pink plastic thing was broke off no longer there it's seem this is a problem with dodge they contine to use this defect part in there cars recalling some models we all should get a law suit against them for this as why recall some models and not the others that have the same problem

I have owned a number of Chrysler automatics with the shift

lock solenoid and never have experienced its failure,this is

not a safety problem but would generate a TSB (tech service bulletin)

IF it were a persistent problem.

It is not a safety related issue so no recall. Class action suits against big corporations are a waste of time and resources. Lawyers get rich, thats about it.

Gear Shift Stuck in Park

I have a 05 Magnum RT with 38000 miles on it. I went to move it today and I can't get it out of park. I've applied the brakes prior to trying to shift, but it will not move. Has anyone else had this problem?  

There's supposed to be a release button inside the storage slot beside the shifter. You have to remove the rubber liner to get to it. I have never had to use it, but I have read about some others who have.

Woode is right, and the release does work. Something is either out of adjustment, or a component has failed. I'll try to look it up in the shop manual to see if it gives any clues.  

I had a honda that did this once and the shift cable was stuck somewhere down the line. the release in it was useless. New cable and i was on the road again.  

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. I'll take a look at it in the morning. I called the dealer and they told me to pull down on the steering wheel sharply while turning the ignition. It didn't work. I did notice that the steering wheel does not lock when I have the key out. Magnuman, please let me know if you find anything in the shop manual. I really appreciate all of your help.  

Page 8W-31-7 of the shop manual (Transmission Control System) shows a Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Solenoid (BTSI) with two wires coming from the Electronic Shift Module (ESM). The two wires are the BTSI Control and the Ignition-Unlock-Run-Start wires. I haven't found out where these components are located (my guess is in the console and under the dash, respectively), but it is possible that one of them (Solenoid or Module) is bad. The manual does not show how the ESM works internally, but there is also an Autostick Switch, and Shift Lever Position function included in the ESM. Have you tried the interlock release that "woodeman" recommended? If you've gotten it into gear, you might check to see if the autostick function is working and also the tranmission selector positions correspond between the dash readout and actual shift lever position. If they're not working, perhaps it is a fuse problem. Don't know where it's located, but my guess there is in the Front Power Distribution Center (black box) under the hood, on the passenger side. I'll keep on looking, but won't get a chance until tomorrow or Thursday. Hope this helps a little. Keep us posted on what you find out, too.  

I've tried the interlock release and it did not work. Is there something special I should do while pushing the release. I've tried holding it in and then starting the car and it still did not work. I'll look at the fuse box and let you know what I find.  

I've looked at the fuses and they appear to be fine. I noticed that the interlock release button allows the gear shift knob to move to the right prior to moving back to reverse or drive. When I crank the car and apply the brakes, the knob will move to the right without using the interlock release button. It just will not let me move the shifter back to reverse or dirive.  

This was a reply I received from another member who sent it by email to me. Does anyone know what part he could be talking about? "Whatever you do, don't take it to the dealership. They charged me $80 just to tell me, yeah, there's something wrong with it. I took it to my mechanic down the street and he said there might be a small part (can't remember what it was, but it had to do with the shifter, not the tranny) that he'd have to replace. He ended up just opening it up and cleaning it out or something (I guess I spilled a lot of soda down there) and I haven't had a problem since. Well, once I did almost get it stuck again. See, I had this bad habit of treating my automatic like a manual shift and going into "1" coming down the hill by my house, just because all my previous cars were stick shift and I missed it. I did it again and it got stuck for a little bit (this time I couldn't get it into park). I used the manual override and it actually worked that time. That's the last time it's happened. So, long story short, just have someone open it up. Maybe it's just dirty or that little plastic thing needs to be replaced. And don't shift into anything but "D", "R", and "P". Sorry if I'm not too technical...good luck!"  

Chino, Here's some info. out of the shop manual on how that system works. Hope it helps. These are just the theories of operation of the shifter operation. You also may want to check for any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). Here's a link on how to check: http://www.lxforums.com/board/showthread.php?t=12361 If you have any codes (a letter and 4 numbers, i.e. P0420) let me know and I'll look them up for you. Theory of Operation The brake switch signal must be active before the shift lever can be moved out of the park position. The Shifter Lever Assembly (SLA) Electronic Shift Module (ESM) receives two brake switch signals. The first signal is a CAN C Bus message sent to the shifter lever assembly. The second signal is a hard wired brake switch signal to the shifter lever assembly. The CAN C Bus message is the primary brake switch signal and the hard wired signal serves as the backup brake switch signal. These two brake switch signals are compared against each other to verify proper brake switch operation. Diagnostic Test 1. ENGINE DTCS PRESENT With the scan tool, read Engine DTCs. Are there any Engine brake DTCs present? This is probably about all you can do, but it might give you a little more knowledge before hitting the dealer.  

Stuck in park. Thanks to a member of another Magnum board, I found out what my problem is. The pink plastic hook piece that holds the spring broke, I have to replace the whole shifter. The photos attached are from him. Great photos!

Any idea why it broke?  

I've had a similar problem with my 06 with 18K miles. It's intermittent and I usually find if I wait a few seconds I'll be able to get it out of park. If anyone knows how much it costs to replace the shifter and also if there's anything to avoid breaking the plastic hook it'd be awesome.

I believe there was a recall for a parking switch but can't remember if it was this car or a different one.  

There was a recall for the brake cable, and well that didnt help sadly

Which engine/trans do you have? It could be an adjustment in the console or a microswitch in the console. Did you have the trans shift cable bushing recall done?

To be mores specific, it's that metal tab with the round metal pin pressing against it under and just behind the switch that's the problem. The large round metal pin makes contact with the tab when the shifter is put into park. Sometimes it misses making contact by a fraction of a millimeter. The shift lockout solenoid doesn't engage and you can't remove the key from the ignition. The solution when this happens, at least for me, is to press the brake (which release the first lockout solenoid) and then push in the button on the front of the shifter and slide my finger off of it so it pops back out. You should hear the solenoid thunk into place. If that doesn't work, it's easy to pop off the silver bezel surrounding the shifter (you pull up on it from the front) and press the tab down to contact the pin.

There is a recall on the transmission shift cable bushing it a 5 dollar fix that can be potentially very serious issue if you are having issues already DEFINITELY look into having that fixed I had to have mine fixed as well

Key gets stuck in ignition

I have a 2016 Dogde Dart GT. I could not put it into park. Does the sensors put the brakes on ? The reason I am asking is first my car would not go into park. So I left it running and ran into a store . Then started to drive home and my brakes stopped working. They basically blew up. I have no brake fluid left. Now my car still won't turn off. Waiting on a tow.  

If you read the entire thread, you would know that it's just a microswitch that is not making contact when you put the shifter in Park. If you permanently connect the wires to the microswitch together, you will never have the problem again. Your brake fluid leaking out is a completely unrelated problem.

Shifter gets stuck in park

In the past 2 weeks, the shifter got stuck in park 3 times. Have to play with it a few seconds. Any ideas appreciated.

What shifter do you have?  

My truck in a 2012 Ram 1500, Quad Cab, Big Horn. It has a 5.7 Hemi and 6-Speed Automatic 65RFE transmission. It has column shifter. Hope this helps.  

Ok, I do have some experience with that one as my dad's 2009 has the column shifter. What exactly do you mean by "sticking", are you pulling the shift lever down but the indicator in the gauge cluster and the actual transmission are both staying in park? Your transmission is the 65RFE (Rear wheel drive, Fully Electronic); but while it is shifted electronically, there is a physical linkage from the column shifter to the switch on the side of the transmission case that performs the switching functions. I believe in looking for the simple solutions first so I would first check to ensure that the switch is being moved by the shift linkage when the column lever is moved; if its not then your linkage needs adjusted. If it is moving then the next thing I'd look into is the shift solenoids inside the transmission.  

The shifter lever will not move until I keep playing with lever.

If equipped: Could it be the shifter interlock solenoid that is starting to stick. Found an article on the matter: https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-shift-interlock-solenoid and this: "In addition to the key-shift interlock safety feature, many vehicles prior to 2010 and all vehicles 2010 and newer are also equipped with a brake-shift interlock safety feature, which, in addition to the ignition switch being in the ON or RUN position, the brake pedal must be depressed and the button on the shifter must be pushed in simultaneously before the shifter can be moved out of "P" Park. The main components that control the locking and unlocking of the shifter are the vehicle ignition switch, the brake light/stoplight switch and the shift interlock solenoid. When one of these components fails, you may not be able to move the shifter out of Park. Additionally, if your vehicle's battery is dead, the shifter will be stuck in Park."  

Is it on flat ground, have torque lock if on a incline? Also you can over ride the shifter solenoid and eleimate it from the equation. Look in the owners manual GEAR SELECTOR OVERRIDE — 6-SPEED TRANSMISSION If a malfunction occurs and the gear selector cannot be moved out of the PARK position, you can use one of the following procedures to temporarily move the gear se- lector: Column Shifter — If Equipped 1. Turn the engine off. 2. Firmly apply the parking brake. 3. Tilt the steering wheel to the full up position. 4. Press and maintain firm pressure on the brake pedal. 5. Insert a screwdriver or similar tool, into the access port (ringed circle) on the bottom of the steering column and push and hold the override release lever up. 6. Move the gear selector to the NEUTRAL position. 7. The vehicle may then be started in NEUTRAL.

Hello folks, Maybe I'm an idiot (scientifically proven to be a true, undeniable fact), but my shift lock does nothing. I tried doing this and my car simply does not get out of park. Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong?

Does it not get your trans out of Park, or the shifter? In other words, did you try moving the car after pulling the hidden lever, or try pulling the shifter out of Park?

Put it in park, pull that little release under the console bezel, get out and push the car. It disengages the Trans.

I wish I read this before. Broke my clips. Have NO idea how to use it again if needed ... till it's fixed of course.  

I see what the issue is. It seems this piece is no longer attached where it should be, but good news is that is seems like it should just slot into place. Bad news is I have gorilla hands and need to figure out how to remove the center console if I wish to fix it. I noticed in both the manual and some videos, that the red pull tab was tucked under the center console and not loose above the lever, like how I found it. Some troglodyte at either the dealer or the bodyshop must have used it and yanked on it with such force that they also broke the metal tab that holds the lever down.

Thanks. So I was right, once I put the black plastic housing behind the bracket that should be holding it, and THEN pulled the lever, the car went into neutral. I need a good light, a couple of pliers, and some patience so I can put the plastic housing back into place with some good ol' surgical precision.

Wonder how many times you can do this before it gets sloppy? or worse, won't re-lock down in the park position, or worse yet break!..I would use it all the time for detailing purposes but obviously it seems to be for emergency use only...if anyone uses this regularly please chime in

I had the same situation as you and solved it by pressing the shift lock release button. Open the button cover with a screwdriver and press the button while shifting the shifter to neutral or other gears. Remember to lock the ignition and apply the front parking brake.

WTF, I can't shift out of Park???

So I get up, get dressed for work, get in my 2006 Dodge Charger R/T (30k miles)... it fires right up. I put on my seatbelt, I step on the brake, and I go to put it in reverse to back out of my parking spot like I've done a thousand times beofre. Wait a second... something is different. I can slide it over, but not pull it down. Feels like something is keeping me from shifting into reverse (or anything else). I've tried stepping on the brake harder... I've tried rocking the car... I've tried turning the wheel back and forth... At first I thought that there must be a brake switch that is broken and that's deactivating some solenoid or something that's keeping me from shifting out of Park. But I can hear what sounds like a solenoid in the shifter engage/disengage when I step repeatedly on the brake... I then start thinking I shouldn't hear it "click", so I'm leaning towards a bum solenoid... Well, now I'm perplexed. With the solenoid engaged, you can't even move it from the P position... But when I step on the brake, it clicks, and you can shift it to the right and pull down a short distance, so that indicates the solenoid is indeed working, and there is something jammed somewhere. Looks like I'm not going to work today.

Its a 2 hr job but that is mainly getting the shifter out of the console area. I changed mine months ago. The piece that Dodge put in is plastic and will break and render the car undriveable. Make sure your brake lights work first. Its likely your park lock out as stated however if your brake switch is bad the pcm doesnt know your on the brakes and wont let you out of park either. Both are common issues  

Good luck with the dealer. A friend had this issue in his magnum and the dealer would not fix it. also told him it was not covered under warrenty. If they do replace the part it will be plastic again and will break again. Billets is aircraft grade aluminum and will not break. You could call and talk to the Billet guys and see if they can expidite shipping, I am positive they will work with you. They are a wonderful company!  

I almost have the shifter out, so I'll confirm it's the part that broke and give them a call...

THERE A SHIFTER OVER RIDE BUILT IN FOR THIS PROBLEM the cup to the right of the shifter comes out and theres a pink button on the left of the opening to the right side of the shifter. PUSH that pink tap in and the shifter will come out of park so your not stuck in the middle of no were.

Yep that is what breaks. I figured that is what happened. The spring attaches to the hook that broke. That is what disengages the shifter lock so you can shift out of park.

What is the cost of the replacement part? If it's not too expensive, maybe a guy could be proactive and replace it before it breaks

There's an engineer somewhere that needs a shot to the nads.. and/or some purchasing guy that said I don't care if it breaks, need to be less than $.01 per part.. ugh. It's things like this that make american cars look really bad.. heck a hole in the plastic for the spring to clip to may have worked better.. not a flimsy hook. Tsk, tsk.. :nono:  

dodge doesnt make a replacement part for it-you have to buy the whole F'in shifter at $250 and if you dont know how to do the install they change $400 at the dealer.

Yeah, the billet part is about $50 and the overnight shipping is $40... And I used to live about 5 miles away from where the company is located in West Palm, FL. I think Dodge made it hot pink just to screw with us too.  

I have to wonder if a shifter lock is really needed at all. If I have this thing fail on my car, It most likely won't be locked EVER again.  

I'm just not putting mine in park anymore.. nothing a brick behind the tire or my parking break wont fix..lol

I hate hearing about problems like this because I just know it's a matter of time before my number is up. Why in the world has Chrysler not yet addressed this problem by changing the design of that pink part? Is this an issue with Mercedes cars that use the same tranny?  

Its not that big of a deal gang, dont get bent out of shape. like steve said you can push the button and get out of your jam. If you dont want to do that just reach down and pull the cable off the shifter and pull it. It's not but a 2 min process in either method. ya, its a cheap part but people would have bitched if chrysler would have bought a better one and then made the price on the invoice higher on the car. Crown vics have shifter issues to, police chargers with a different set up (column shift) have the same problem, navigators, expeditions, yukons, envoys, countours, escorts,caravans and on and on. Lots of manufactures use the same companies to make this stuff. The shifter in our car is probably the same company thats in 80% of the other vehicles out there. Manufactures just buy from the cheapest source who will offer a 3 year minimum warranty.  

chrysler knows that theres a problem and states in the owners manual how to over ride the lock out if this happens to you. #1 remove the junk pocket to the right of the shifter by poping it up and out #2 to the right of the shifter/left side of pocket opening there is a little square opening and in there is a little pink tap which is the swing point of the shifter lock out A.K.A pice of chit pink plastic part. #3 with a finger push it inward and with the other hand pull shifter out of park. pic is what the pink tap is that your are pushing on. you can never be stuck untill you fix it with BT's part

Here's a very important question. If this spring clip breaks does the override still work?? fastmopar  

Since I'm a cheap ass...... I took my spare shifter apart and pulled the "Pink Thingy" out. Absolutely correct! The spring hook is junk. Sssooo... I took a piece of thin steel approx 1/4" wide. Drilled a small hole to line up with the spring hook opening, then two mounting holes in the "Pink Thingy", one on top and one on the side away from the hook. I bent the metal piece 90 degrees to fit the "pink" and drilled holes to match the mounting holes. Screwed the metal piece on checked for interference. Everything looks good and the spring now hooks through a hole in metal rather than a plastic hook. I know cheap ass.....I can't afford $50 for billet aluminum. Think I'll replace the one in the car with my metal piece before I get stranded. fastmopar  

Bringing up an old thread. I own a 06 Pacifica and this morning wouldn't shift out of park, and this seems to be the issue here for me as well. I just want to know if this piece is universal with chrysler cars. It looks the same as what I pulled out and that little hook is broken as well. Can anyone confirm the billet part is universal?
