Gir National Park, Gujarat

Please provide us your contact number and convenient time, our expert will call back to you.

The Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Sasan Gir, is a forest-cum-sanctuary in the Indian state of Gujarat famous for being the only abode of the Asiatic Lion. It was however not long ago that this majestic creature, which now is the prime attraction of the park, was on a death-bed counting its days as its population shrank to a record low, prompting the park authorities to chalk out a master strategy to reverse the trend. The efforts bore fruit and today, according to a Lion Census of 2010, there are 411 lions in Gir, a stunning reversal of fortunes for the Asiatic Lion.

The forested hilly terrains of the park have also helped many other species like jackals, leopards, antelope, and deer to thrive, making it the perfect destination to sight these incredible creatures in their natural habitat. Considering the number of wild species that are residents of the park, many of which are rare and endangered species, the park is widely regarded as one of the most important protected areas in Asia.

The core zone of the park, which spreads over an area of 258 sq km, became a national park in 1975. The park also includes a sanctuary with an area of 1153 sq km.

Geography of the park

The wildlife of the park is nurtured by no less than seven major perennial rivers that crisscross the park, viz., Hiran, Shetrunji, Datardi, Shingoda, Machhundri, Godavari and Raval. Four dams which act as reservoirs have been built in the park to ensure that the animals have easy access to water; these dams are also deemed necessary for the flora of the park which in turn sustains the wildlife. The biggest of the four dams is the Kamleshwar Dam, which many regard to be the lifeline of the park.

When winter is at its peak, the surface water of the park goes up and is available at about 300 water points. But if there is a drought, many water bodies, especially the smaller ones, dry up. As a result, it is pretty common to spot different animal species queuing up at the remaining water bodies to quench their thirst. This then turns out to be an opportune time for predators like the lion, jackals and his ilk who are expert opportunists. In case there is a severe water scarcity in any particular region of the park, the park authorities immediately jump into action to forestall any loss of lives.

The park is located in the south west of Gujarat at a distance 360 km from Ahmedabad and 40 km from Veraval. Sasan Gir village is the entrance of the park and hosts the park reception and the orientation center.

The flora of Gir is rich and diverse, which in a way is essential for supporting the wide variety of wildlife found in the park. The landscape is dominated by mixed deciduous forests along with semi-evergreen and evergreen trees, and scrub jungle. There are also large expanses of grasslands and rocky hills that one will find here. As the forest is of dry deciduous nature, the climate remains dry for the major part of the year and supports scrubs like Babul and dry-deciduous which are found in good numbers. Also, as is the case with this type of climate, when one moves up the hills, the trees get shorter and their density more sparse.

The common trees that are found here include Teak, Flame of the forest, Acacia, Banyan, Zizyphas, Jamun, Tendu and Dhak. In fact, Teak covers half the total vegetation area of the park.

Among the plant species, many of them broad-leaved trees, Jambu, Karanj, Umro, Vad, Kalam, Charal, Sirus and Amli are the prominent ones and are responsible for maintaining the moisture content of the park. In recent times, with an eye on increasing the forested area of the park, Prosopis and Casuarina have been planted in the coastal areas close to Gir.

Firmly establishing its position as an important biological research area that contributes considerably towards the progress of education, scientific endeavor, and recreation, Gir today produces around 5 million of green grasses every year, which translates into approximately Rs. 500 million, through annual harvesting.

Other animals trying to take the limelight away from the Asiatic Lion.

There are many other animals in the park that are no less interesting, but only if you are ready to look beyond the mighty Asiatic Lion. The park has a large number of leopards, which together with the lions gives it the unique distinction of being the park with the highest concentration of big-cats in India. The chousingha, which is the world's only four-horned antelope, is another animal that comes close to hijacking the Asiatic Lion's claim to fame. A significant number of footfalls at the park can also be attributed to mammals like Sambar and spotted deer (chital), blue bull (nilgai), chinkara (Indian gazelle) and wild boar thrive in Gir. Jackal, striped hyena, jungle cat, rusty-spotted cat, langur, porcupine, and black-naped Indian hare.

Among the reptile family, the marsh crocodile or mugger as it is popularly known in the region is the one to look out for; the Monitor Lizard is another species that deserve some attention. A total of 40 species of reptiles and amphibians has been recorded so far in the park. As for snakes, they are present almost everywhere from tree tops to bushes to swamps. Huge pythons can be seen lazing away along the banks of river bodies.

Avifauna of the park

The avifauna of the park is highlighted by the presence of 300 species of birds, many of which are native to the region. Then there are others like the endangered lesser florican and the Saras crane, which are predominantly found inhabiting the grasslands that lie along the periphery of the park. Species like the painted sandgrouse, grey francolin, quails, Asian paradise flycatcher, black-naped monarch, white-browed fantail, Asian brown flycatcher, gray-headed flycatcher, verditer flycatcher, Tickell's blue flycatcher, greenish warbler, white-eye, Coppersmith Barbet, common and marshal's iora, Rufous treepie, yellow-footed green pigeon are, however, more common and can be easily spotted at different places in the park.

Travel Information about Gir National Park

How to reach gir national park.

Gir is well connected by all the three modes of transport -road, railway and air. So, reaching girl shouldn't be much of a trouble for travelers. Junagadh, the headquarters of Junagadh district in the state of Gujarat, is the common entrance route to the park.

By Air : The nearest airport is Keshod Airport in Junagadh, but it is currently not in operation. So, the best thing to do is to book a flight to Rajkot, which is 105 km from Junagadh. It normally takes around two and a half hours from Rajot to reach Junagadh by bus.

By Rail : The Junagadh train station, which is closest to the park, is well connected to all the important destinations in the state, including Ahmedabad and Rajkot. From Junagadh, it is barely a one and a half hour journey by road to Gir.

By Road : State transport buses ply regularly from Junagadh and Veraval, which are approx 50 km and 40 km respectively away from the park, to Susan Gir at least four times a day. If one is travelling from some other place in Gujarat, even then reaching the park is pretty straight forward as there are multiple options in the form of private buses and state transport that one can choose from.

Sasan Gir National Park was a part of the princely state of Junagarh back in the 19th century and a hunting ground for the royal household and the British officers. However, the sudden drop in the lion population encouraged the Nawab of Junagarh to establish the sanctuary in 1965. Today, Gir Forest is the only place in Asia where Asiatic lions can roam freely. Ecotourism is a major attraction and a source of revenue to keep the place up and running.

Forest & Safari Booking

The landscape.

The Gir Lion Reserve, aka Sasan Gir, is part of a huge stretch of Kathiawr-Gir deciduous forest and home to the majestic Asiatic lions. The park, spreading over an area of 1413 square Kilometres is ideal for a weekend gateway, offering guests great accommodation options near the park. You can spend your days exploring the Gir jungle trail safaris, spotting lion cubs roaming about the area, and learn more about the amazing wildlife conservation work that is done by the officers here.

Water Resources

Other than the rich biodiversity and tourism, the Sasan Gir forest is also known for its elaborate water conservation systems. Gir is the meeting point of seven major perennial rivers- Hiran, Shetrunji, Datardi, Shingoda, Machhundri, Godavari, and Raval. There are four water reservoirs constructed on four of these rivers Hiran, Machhundri, Raval, and Shingoda. The Kamleshwar Dam, dubbed, ‘the lifeline of Gir’ is the biggest dam in the area. Plus, there are water points or small lakes constructed all over the landscape for animals to gather during the scorching summer months to quench their thirst.

Flora Of Gir Jungle

Gir National Park is a very dry teak forest. Here, teak occurs mixed with dry deciduous species. More than 507 plant species have been recorded comprising 132 tree species, 48 shrub species, 232 herb species, 64 climber species and 26 grass species. The Gir national park is part of the Kathiawar-Gir deciduous forest, replete with semi-evergreen trees and thorny shrubs, and rolling plains of grasslands. The area features mixed forest with teak trees, Zizyphas, dhak, Jamun, tendu, babool, banyan and acacia that can be used for fuelwood and other purposes.

Other than that, there are also plants like Dhavdo, timru, umro, simai, Simal, khakro, Kalam, Vad, Amla, Bamboo, Ber, and Saliacan here. The forest is shady with broad-leaved deciduous trees like casuarinas and Prosopsis that add on to the aesthetics of the place. Scientists and biologists are also conducting research in and around the area, discovering new species, harvesting methods, and actionable environmental conservation techniques.

Fauna Of Gir Forest

The endless stretch of deciduous forest in the Gir National Park is the only place in Asia where you can find Asiatic lions roaming around freely in all their glory. However, the dense forest is not just home to these majestic carnivores but a host of other species and insects that make the place vibrant and diverse.

Established in 1965, this wildlife sanctuary was earlier a hunting ground for royal families and British officers. Today the area is one of the most extensive wildlife conservation sites in the country. Back in 1913, there were but 20 lions in the forest, the 2015 consensus shows a vast improvement in the situation with the population rising to 523 lions. Here are some of the animals that you can come across on your trip to the Sasan Gir Forest:

Other than lions, you can also find herds of deer, leopards, hyenas, jackals, elephants, mongoose, and other mammals on land. There are two types of deer species found here- the popular Sambar and Chowsingha, the four-horned antelope. Striped Hyena, jackals, and India Fox are other common predators.

The Gir National Park is house of over 200 species of birds- ranging from common swallows to majestic peacocks. The national park also functions as a bird reserve, a title that was declared by the Bird Conservative Network. Bird watchers from across the world come over to the forest to spot species like the greenish yellow-footed pigeons, Griffon Eurasian vulture, hawk, eagle, Indian Pitta, Oriole to name a few.

As soon as you enter the forest, the chirruping of crickets greets you, piercing the stillness of the jungle. As you move on, you might come across other small creatures like worms, butterflies, bugs, grasshoppers among other things. There are over 2000 species of insects that were discovered by scientists in the past few decades. We would recommend that you carry a bug spray, carry jackets, and other medication with you to protect yourself from allergic reactions and skin inflammation.

Other than insects and birds, the Gir national reserve has a decent population of reptiles as well. There are roughly 37 new species of reptiles, ranging from frogs to snakes and scorpions and bees that researchers have discovered in the area. However, it is the marsh crocodile that steals the show, attracting tourists in large numbers. Snake lovers would be thrilled to discover species like the King Cobra, Russel’s viper, Krait, and saw-scaled vipers in the forest.

Gir has a tropical monsoon climate, with three distinct seasons – summer, monsoon and winter. Late November to early March is cool and dry, followed by a hot dry summer. Mid-June to September is the monsoon period. The bulk of the precipitation is during July and August.

EXPERIENCE THE TRANQUILITY

Asiatic lions are one of the rarest of all the big cat species in the world. These beasts ranged across the lands of the bible and devoured Christians in Roman arenas. Once found across South Asia from Mesopotamia all the way down to Central India, now they are confined to the dry forests of Gir National Park and Sanctuary making it the last home of the Asiatic Lion.

Gir National Park is located in the erstwhile estate of Junagadh in the Southern part of the North-west Indian state of Gujarat. During the British Raj and East India Company Rule, the kings of princely states across India invited and held hunting expeditions for British Colonists and royal guests. Around the early 1900s, this caused the population to plummet and barely a dozen lions were left in the wild, all of them in Gir. The Asiatic Lion became locally extinct all over India except in Junagadh. The concerns to protect the species rose and the forests of Gir were brought under protection by the Nawab of Junagadh in the second half of the 20th century.

Presently, an estimated population of 523 lions calls an area of 1412 sq. km., their home which comprises the National Park and Sanctuary. But the actual habitat spreads across 4 districts – Junagadh, Somnath, Amreli, and Bhavnagar – covering an area of over 22,000 sq. km.

Talk to us to plan your safari to Gir to see and photograph the last surviving population of Asiatic Lions.

The Experience

Wildlife safaris in Gir National Park are scheduled to take place twice a day, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. Each session is for around 3 hours. During our previous tours in Gir, we have had 100% success in finding Asiatic Lions. In Sasan Gir, we work with an experienced team of drivers and naturalists whose experiences are key in helping our guests live their dream of photographing Asiatic Lions. From tracking to positioning the vehicles, they are the best in getting you to the right place at the right moment.

Photographing Asiatic Lions in Gir is not so challenging given the fact that the Big Cats are not very shy. During the dry season in Gir, the forests shed their leaves and the visibility improves, further contributing to better wildlife photography and viewing. The Asiatic Lions are comparatively smaller than their African cousins. While tigers and lions don’t co-exist, the park has a healthy population of Leopards. With an extra streak of luck, the rare striped Hyena could be ticked off your list.

Though there are numerous lodges and hotels in Gir, we at The Wildside have partnered with a few lodges in Gir offering top-notch services to our guests. From being located close to the park to having good facilities, our selection of lodges in Gir stands out from the rest. It is the ideal retreat to retire after a long day of safaris in the park. The lodge’s kitchens bring to the table some of the most delicious dishes from the North Indian and Continental cuisine as well. All rooms are air-conditioned with ensuite facilities and some even offer spectacular views of the surrounding forests.

Best and Affordable Tour Package for Gir National Park

Published by abhishek on april 9, 2022 april 9, 2022.

Gir National Park , popularly known as Sasan Gir, is a Gujarati wildlife refuge. It is essentially a forest with a total size of 545 square miles, of which 100 square miles is designated as a national park and the remaining 445 square miles is designated as a wildlife sanctuary. The Kathiawar-Gir dry deciduous forest ecosystem includes this wildlife sanctuary. During the nineteenth century, Indian kings used to invite British colonists on hunting excursions for Asiatic lions.

As a result, barely a dozen Asiatic lions remained in the Gir forest, one of the Nawab of Junagarh’s special hunting territories. At the moment, Gir forest is the only place in the world where Asiatic lions may be found. It is critical to emphasize that lions are protected here in order to save the supported species from extinction.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.
