Come here early in the morning or during sunset for spectacular photos of the volcano, along with the vast green field and free-ranging horses and sheep. For those who want to stay a bit longer, there are also activities you can do here including horseback riding.

This site is also open for overnight camping. Open cottages and patios are available for day trippers. The farm has basic amenities, so adjust your expectations accordingly.

If you’re craving for a day in the beach, chances are you’ll be planning a trip to Misibis Bay or perhaps to the neighboring province of Sorsogon. But Albay also has its share of white-sand beaches, one of which is Muladbucad White Beach.

Located in the town of Manito about an hour away from Legazpi City, this beach is a favorite among locals since it is easily accessible by car, not to mention its dazzling white sand and clear water. These are the L-shaped Japanese Tunnels in Ligñon Hills which were built by Japanese soldiers during the heat of World War II. The tunnels, usually about 3 feet high in some areas, were used to store ammunition and firearms. Caretakers say that some of these tunnels actually stretched all the way to the town’s municipality! That’s approximately 40 meters long! However, the tunnels eventually had to be collapsed so that the American soldiers won’t be able to access the ammunition.

Up to this date, there are still some remains and artifacts left by the Japanese inside the tunnels. This can also be a great learning experience for everyone because statues, posters, and other memorabilia depict what it was like being a soldier during World War II.

HOW TO GET TO ALBAY

How to get from manila to albay by flight.

If you want to get from Manila to Albay by flight. It will be the most comfortable way. You have to ride a plane from Manila to  Legazpi airport .

There are daily flights with  Cebu Pacific  and  Philippine Airlines  going from Manila to Bicol. The travel time Manila to Legazpi by flight is 1 hour and 30 minutes. And prices are around  1500-2500 PHP  for one way.

MANILA TO ALBAY BY BUS

If you want to get from Manila to Albay by bus. There are daily buses leaving Manila from Edsa Cubao, Araneta Cubao, Alabang, Buendia and Pasay.

BUS SCHEDULE MANILA TO ALBAY

Most of the buses are from 5 pm to 10 pm leaving from Manila to Albay Province. Just go for the closest Bus Terminal for you In Manila. But all bus companies are offering buses during the day from Edsa Cubao, Araneta Cubao, Alabang, Buendia and Pasay between 6-8 am.

Manila to Albay travel time will be around 12-14 hours. And prices go from  800-1300 PHP  depending on the comfort of the bus. Regular buses can go as cheap as  800 PHP . ALl of them will get to Legazpi Central Station but they will do stops on the way.

The best time to visit Albay is during dry season, especially from  December  to  February  when temperatures are much cooler and touring will most likely not be interrupted by rains and will not be really hot going around.

DAILY BUDGET TRAVEL IN ALBAY

For the daily budget travel in accommodation in Albay. There are a few rooms and B&Bs,  Airbnb  available all over Albay that cost around  1000 PHP  per night. That’s just  $19 USD ! Most of the places are close to city center and Bus Terminal.

On the other hand, meals in local joints only cost  $2-3 USD  so eating here won’t burn a hole in your wallet, for sure. This volcano is one of the things the Philippines boasts. It is an active, perfect-cone volcano that is famous to tourists.

Cagsawa Ruins Park The are the remnants of a 16th-century Franciscan church, Cagsawa church. It was built in 1587 but was burned down by Dutch pirates in 1636 and rebuilt in 1724 by Fr. Francisco Blanco. But it destroyed in 1814 with the eruption of the Mayon Volcano.

Quitinday Underground River and Quitinday Falls is located in Camalig. Quitinday Falls offers a cliff jumping. Jovellar is an awesome place for adventure. Quitinday Underground River entrance fee is  20 PHP  and also a guide is required. You can rent a bamboo raft for the Underground River for  200 PHP .

4. VERA FALLS

Vera Falls is located in the based of Mt. Malinao and it will take more than one hour to get there if you are coming from Legazpi. You will have to hike up and down so make sure you bring appropriate shoes for this. Vera Falls entrance fee is  10 PHP  and you can rent cottages for  120 PHP .

5. HOYOP-HOYOPAN CAVE

Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave is one of the best things to do in Albay if you like adventure. Make sure you are bringing proper shoes since it can be sleepery. You will have to head to Camalig for this activity. Hoyop-Hoyopan Cave entrance fee is  150 PHP  per personand includes a guide.

6. LIGNON HILL NATURE PARK

Lignon Hill Nature Park is close to the airport. You will be able to get amazing views of Mayon Volcano and it’s perfect to go avoiding the heat first thing in the morning or at sunset time. Lignon Hill Nature Park has no entrance fee and you can do activities like ATV and zip line.

7. GUINANAYAN ISLAND

Guinanayan Island is a white sand surrounding the island. A perfect place for practicing snorkeling, scuba-diving and relax swimming. There is a beach resort and you can even camping. To get to Guinanayan Island there is one daily boat going from Tabaco to Guinanayan.

11. JAPANESE TUNNELS

Japanese Tunnels are located in Ligñon Hill Nature Park. The Japanese Tunnels are 40 meters long and they were built during The Japanese Invasion of Legazpi on 12 December 1941 when Filipino and American soldiers were fighting again the Japanese. You will see how they were living and their hidden places inside the tunnels.

Daraga Church is located in Daraga, Albay just 4 kilometers far from Legazpi City. Daraga Church also called Nuestra Señora de la Porteria Parish Church is a Roman Catholic Church . Daraga Church was built by the Franciscans in 1772.

Joroan Church is also called Our Lady of Salvation is a Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The image was of the Virgin Mary canonically crowned by the Catholic Church on 25 August 1976 as the patroness of the province of Albay.

St John the Baptist Church also called as Tabaco Church is a Roman Catholic Church in the city of Tabaco in Albay. The church of Tabaco Church was founded by the Franciscans in 1616 and it was declared a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines.

15. CATHEDRAL OF ST GREGORY THE GREAT

Cathedral of St Gregory the Great is also called Albay Cathedral. It’s located in Peñaranda Park and it was built in 1834 by Pedro Romero.

For all its friendliness, quaint town romance & encompassing acceptance of the diversity of humankind, Tabaco City prides itself as Bicol’s City of Love. Here, this affection is as hot as its chili, as easy breezy as its beaches & its people are heartwarming as you can imagine.

I have to admit that it wasn’t love at first sight. My first visit here was in 2011 for a quick run at work. Then it was seconded by a spontaneous detour when I did a crosscountry roadtrip in 2017. And in the summer of 2018, I just let it slip through the night before sailing to Catanduanes early the next day.

What’s there to love about Tabaco City?

After a few failed attempts to experience Tabaco City, I finally got the chance to feel its real vibe when I got invited to the celebration of its town fiesta. This time, I had an entire week to indulge on so many wonderful things that I missed out on in the past.

The weeks leading up to June 24 are always a great time to visit Tabaco City as it stages Tabak Festival & the feast of St. John the Baptist. It celebrates the ingenuity of tabak making or bolo smithing as one of its prime local crafts.

Tabak Festival

This merrymaking rejoices many things Tabaceño: their adoration for St. John, its bountiful harvests as well as the charms of its crafts. Also, it celebrates its people’s skills, talents & beauty that make them proud as Bicolanos.

Admirably, this festival gives every group in their community a time to shine in various variety shows. There’s one for LGBTQI, for LGU employees, for hip-hoppers & cosplayers. Then there are events for farmers, fisherfolks, bladesmiths & even teenage moms too.

One thing that fascinates me about Tabaco City is its abounding view of Mayon Volcano . And, I highly toss this place as one of the best spots to catch her elusive beauty. I surely had a fantastic week waking up to her allure from my hotel’s window.

I chased her from the sea, at the plaza & from the road. Even hunted her from fields to farms & from islands to highlands. She’s just so all around that makes the town naturally spectacular.

And if you can’t really get enough of her from a panoramic distance, you can scale up to Mayon Planetarium & Science Park in Buang. Saddling at 2,800 feet above, this spot offers not just an observatory facility & museum but also a breathtaking view of this side of Albay.

Old-Town Charm & New City Feels

The city’s town center is compact. Sleek commercial buildings grow in cheek by jowl with its old architecture. But even at first impressions, it’s easy to spot that its townscape is laid out in a Spanish quadricula.

Everything revolves around the 1800s baroque church of St. John the Baptist. Across the road are the centennial school of St. Louise de Marillac & the City Hall that are reminiscent of American period state architecture from the mid-20 th century.

Just around the bend is a heritage house that dates back to 1868 done in the classic “bahay na bato” colonial construction. In the American Period it became the office of the Bell, Smith & Company, an abaca trading firm that reminds us today of the city’s affluent past. Today, the heirs of then famous poet, Angela Manalang-Gloria own it.

While there’s not many of its kind left in old Spanish strongholds in the country, interestingly, Tabaco City has kept its cemetery chapel intact. It is called Cimburrio, built in dark volcanic stones & rock similar to the church.

Tabaco’s Natural Allures

As much as my love for fleeting sunsets, I am fascinated with waterfalls too. In the foothills of Mt. Masaraga is Oras Falls, the city’s only waterfall. It may not be plunging high but it’s definitely never short of beauty & fun.

But what’s a trip to Tabaco City without visiting its famed San Miguel Island? This side of the city is lovely with quite a few local resorts around. But there’s one spot here that not many tourists know about — Punta.

It is soaked in the dramatics of coconut trees & tall cogon grass, the murmurs of the waves & the castaway feel. And if you come in at the right time, Mayon in full view wouldn’t be too bad for a background.

With everything that I did for a week here, I have to confess that I spent most of my time eating around. Sorry, overeating around. Laing, Bicol Express & Pinangat are a staple food here. They’re irresistible & so are DJC’s halo-halo, sinapot & pili brittle.

But if there is one food that’s very Tabaceño, dig for marcasotes, an effin’ yummy muffin. Created by the Borganio family in the 60s, they’re still baking it the traditional way today in giant claypots.

Tabaco City is a quaint town in the face of a bustling modern world. Most people still go for home-cooked lunch & dig into Sunday markets. They still pause for the angelus & takes joy in bygone style padyak rides.

It may not be the prettiest place & not even the most famous. But somewhere, somehow, there is something about this city that captures your heart & tickles your imagination. Yes, because Albay is Tabaco too.

On our first day, Rikka Atole took us to the Cagsawa Ruins for a walk followed by ATV. Bico was gracious to take our photos while guiding us through the wilderness at the foot of Mount Mayon. Next stop was Camalig for Quituinan and Sumlang Lake. Finally had late lunch at Dreamers Cafe. Then we pushed forward to Tiwi Pottery. Our second day consisted of two beautiful waterfalls- Busay and Vera. They are about an hour from each other. We had lunch at Gamboa's Orchard which is lovingly decorated with a lot of Santa Claus decor. Our driver for the first day is John then Mark for the second day. They were polite and made sure we were comfortable and enjoying our trip. Rikka is incredible! She took our picture even if it meant walking on narrow rice pathways or going between large boulders. She really took the extra mile for posterity. Overall, I would recommend GUIDE TO THE PHILIPPINES to friends and relatives.
