Soon You Can Stay like Prisoner and Experience Life in Tihar Jail, India’s Biggest Prison

There are umpteen stories of Tihar Prison or Tihar Jail in India . Other than the most popular tourist attractions across India, Tihar Jail near New Delhi is a most talked-about place for its high-profile prisoners, including Chhota Rajan, Charles Sobhraj, Suresh Kalmadi, Subrata Roy, Lalu Yadav and Sanjay Gandhi.

Many people wonder how Tihar Jail rooms are, how Tihar Jail prisoners live, how Tihar Jail conditions are, what a typical day in the life of a prisoner in Tihar Prion is, how the inside view of Tihar Prison is, etc. Those wondering about the life in Indian prisons will soon be able to live the typical Tihar Jail experience to their satisfaction. Yes, you read it right.

India’s largest and highest security prison, Tihar Jail will reportedly open its doors to tourists and visitors in the next few months. The Tihar Jail tourism project titled ‘Feel Like Jail’ includes a number of facilities for the guests willing to spend a day or two within the 400-acre prison complex. The guests will have to pay for the Tihar jail experience and work like the prisoners during their stay. They will be given the typical prison uniform which the Tihar Jail inmates wear.

Tihar Jail life, Tihar jail India, Indian prison tourism, Tihar Prison Delhi

There is nothing to be surprised. Foreign tourists are taking cheap flights to India for a similar prison tourism program, ‘Feel the Jail’ in the state of Telangana . The Sangareddy Prison, a 220-year-old heritage jail which is nearly 70 kms from Hyderabad International Airport, entertains guests with a unique experience of the typical life in Indian prisons.

Built during the Nizam regime in the then princely state of Hyderabad, the Sangareddy Prison charges INR 500 per guest for a day. The Telangana Prison Department’s ‘Feel the Jail’ tourism program drew global attention to India in January 2018 when two Malaysian tourists took flights to Hyderabad , spent 2 days behind the bars and experienced the life of a prisoner in the Sangareddy Prison. During their stay, they did all mundane jobs like gardening and cleaning. They were given the simple Indian meals which usually prisoners cook and eat.

However, the inside view of Tihar Jail is a larger-than-life picture which one cannot imagine without any experience of the life in Tihar prison complex. With nearly 15,500 inmates, Tihar Jail is the most populated prison in India and the biggest prison in Asia. Run by the government of Delhi’s prison department, Tihar Prison is styled as a correctional institution and also known as Tihar Ashram. The first Indian female IPS officer, Kiran Bedi was the Inspector General of Prisons at the helm of reformative programs for rehabilitation of the Tihar prison inmates.

At Tihar Jail in India, the guests will be treated to the food cooked by the prisoners though they will not be able to interact with the prisoners and use their mobile phones or other electronic devices for security reasons. What one-day stay in Tihar Jail rooms will cost the guests is yet to be decided on.

How to Reach Tihar Jail in New Delhi

Tihar Prison is easily accessible by bus and Delhi Metro from Indira Gandhi International Airport . Located in Tihar Village, nearly 7 km from Chanakya Puri to the west of New Delhi, Tihar Jail will surely be among the most offbeat tourist places in Delhi once the prison tourism program ‘Feel Like Jail’ is rolled out for commoners.

Namaskar. May i suggest to those interested in getting the jail experience, to consider volunteering in the jail system as possible, working with those incarcerated, through teaching yoga, meditation, life skills, therapy, etc., so that the experience can become lifechanging for the positive. Those in jail need not be stigmatized as they are our brothers and sisters who have, like everyone has, made mistakes in one way or another in life. The recidivism rate is low for those who experience these types of programs. suniita schreffler

Jail tourism: Pune’s Yerawada prison to be open to public from January 26

MUMBAI:  In its attempt to popularise historical places, the Maharashtra government has decided to start ‘jail tourism’ with Pune’s Yerawada prison being thrown open to the public on January 26. “This is the first such initiative in the country. We want to bring the young generation closer to historically important places and events,” said Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

The 150-year-old Yerawada Jail is South Asia’s largest where several eminent freedom fighters were incarcerated by the colonial British government. Some of them are Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The prisons in Thane, Nashik and Ratnagiri will also be a part of ‘jail tourism’.

The Yerawada jail was witness to the historic Poona Pact, which was signed between Mahatma Gandhi and Dr BR Ambedkar on September 24, 1932, under a Mango tree for reservation of electoral seats for repressed classes, still exists. The places in Yerawada where freedom fighters stayed are also maintained and named after them. In recent years, Yerawada jail gained popularity following the hanging of Mumbai terror attack convict Azmal Kasab.

Deshmukh said the government has preserved memories of great leaders of India at Yerawada. “Rather than hiding these important places within the jail, we have decided to showcase them. The idea is to make people relate themselves with our history. This is the first great step towards jail tourism,” said Deshmukh. Guides will be provided to visitors and ticket prices will range from `5 to `50.

Due to the pandemic situation, only 50 visitors will be allowed daily to visit the significant places inside the jail. CM Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar will inaugurate the jail tourism initiative at Yerawada. The state government has also decided to open the Assembly building to the visitors during the non-session period. A formal announcement will be made shortly following a meet between state tourism minister Aaditya Thackeray and Speaker Nana Patole.

Maharashtra launches jail tourism project from Pune's Yerawada prison

 alt=

Mumbai: In a first such initiative, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday launched 'jail tourism' in the state from the 150-year-old Yerawada prison in Pune, with an aim to help students and other citizens experience "vignettes from history".

Launching the initiative, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that people will be able to understand the struggles of freedom fighters by visiting jails under this initiative.

Several freedom fighters, including Mahatma Gandhi, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Sarojini Naidu and Subhas Chandra Bose, had been imprisoned at the Yerawada prison under the British rule.

"CM Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray today launched a unique jail tourism initiative. This will help school and college students, history enthusiasts and citizens to experience vignettes from our history," the Chief Ministers Office (CMO) said in a tweet.

Addressing the initiative launch event virtually, the chief minister referred to his father, Shiv Sena founder late Bal Thackerays days spent at the Yerawada prison.

The CM said he used to meet his father in the prison. "He (Balasaheb Thackeray) used to send us letters," he said.

On the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar read out a letter sent from the prison by Balasaheb Thackeray to his wife Meenatai Thackeray.

The chief minister also talked about the imprisonment of Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar and various other freedom fighters and the plight they suffered inside jails.

"It is a novel concept. People talk about visiting (hill stations) like Mahabaleshwar and Lonavala. They may say they have been to jail (after launch of the initiative)," the chief minister said in a lighter vein.

"But one need not commit a crime for going to jail. We have shown a new path of tourism. Jail Yatra," an official statement said quoting Uddhav Thackeray.

The chief minister also said that inmates inside prisons are a "big manpower".

Efforts should also be made to show a right direction to those "who have lost their direction", he said.

"We should make efforts to see those who are released from jail lead a respectful life," he said.

Meanwhile, the CM also inaugurated five new cyber police stations located in the south, central, east, west and north zones of Mumbai Police, another official statement said.

He likened criminal activities to the novel coronavirus and said the police of Mumbai and Maharashtra have "got a vaccine" to teach a lesson to those who engage in it.

"We are proud of it. Cyber crime is not visible to eyes. Our battle against such an invisible enemy has started more ably now (with the inauguration of cyber police stations)," the statement said quoting Uddhav Thackeray.

Without mentioning any specific incident, the CM also asked police not to become "restless" if anyone defames them.

"Because you have exposed them, not only I as the chief minister, but the entire Maharashtra is proud of you. Hence, the government is standing behind you with all its strength," he said.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and Minister of State for Home Satej Patil were present on the occasion via video-conferencing,the statementsaid.

State Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray, Mumbai's Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh and other leaders also attended the programme.

Deshmukh last week said prisons in Thane, Nashik and Ratnagiri will also be part of the jail tourism initiative.

Yerawada prison officials said only 50 people can visit per day due to pandemic as of now.

Tourists will have to obtain prior permission and to pay fees ranging from Rs 5 to 50, they said.

Tourists can see Gandhi yard, Tilak yard, Fashi (hanging) yard and other historical places in the prison, they said.

Earlier in the day, jail authorities allowed students of a city-based school to visit the places associated with freedom fighters inside the Yerawada prison.

"Due to this concept of tourism, we can see historical places including the Gandhi yard, Tilak yard and the place of Pune pact. We felt quite excited," they told reporters.

Will you pay to spend time in a prison? Maharashtra govt to launch 'jail tourism'

Maharashtra government has decided to initiate 'jail tourism' from January 26, state home minister Anil Deshmukh said on Saturday. Similar initiatives have been taken in other parts of the country, especially in Delhi's Tihar jail which came up with a 'jail tourism project' in 2019.

The programme will begin from Yerawada jail in Pune and it will be inaugurated by CM Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar. Yerawada jail will be developed as a tourism site since many freedom fighters were jailed there, Deshmukh told the press.

Prisons such as the Yerawada jail and others in the state are significant to the history of India and of Maharashtra, Deshmukh said. He went on to add that tours to Nasik and Nagpur prisons will begin in the second and third phase of this initiative.

Responding to questions about intoxicating substances being smuggled into the state's prisons, Anil Deshmukh said the matter is being probed. The incident from Nagpur is serious and we are investigating it, he added.

6 Indian Prisons Where You Can Visit As A Tourist

Photo of Bongyatri - Sourav and Anindita

Jail or Prison is such a place where nobody wants to go intentionally. Spending time behind the bars in a dark prison cell, wearing a jail uniform, and having the basic jail food there, maybe a nightmare for us. But what if you get a chance to walk into jail as a free soul and leave at your own whim?

Photo of 6 Indian Prisons Where You Can Visit As A Tourist 1/8 by Bongyatri - Sourav and Anindita

India has few prisons which are tourist attractions for various reasons. Some are famous for historical values; some have interesting museums and yet others provide pay and stay facilities. Here you will get 6 famous jails in India that have opened their doors for Tourism.

1. Cellular Jail :

Where: Port Blair, Andaman

Cellular Jail is also known as Kala Pani. The prison was used by the British Government for the purpose of exiling political prisoners to the remote archipelago. Although the prison complex itself was constructed between 1896 and 1906, the British had been using the Andaman Islands as a prison since the days in the immediate aftermath of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The bricks used to build the building were brought from Burma.

Photo of 6 Indian Prisons Where You Can Visit As A Tourist 2/8 by Bongyatri - Sourav and Anindita

The building has had 7 wings, at the center of which a tower served as the intersection and was used by guards to keep watch on the inmates. Each of the 7 wings had three stories upon completion. It was designed in such a way that communication between prisoners was impossible. Today the jail is open to tourists every day except for public holidays. The light and sound show at Cellular Jail is a must-see while on an Andaman trip.

2. Yerawada Jail :

Where: Pune, Maharashtra

Yerawada Jail is the largest jail in the state of Maharashtra and also one of the largest prisons in South Asia. The jail is spread over 512 acres, holds over 5000 prisoners. Yerawada Jail was built in 1871 by the British Government. Under British rule, the jail housed many Indian freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhas Bose, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and many more.

As a tourist, you can explore the two historic group cells in Yerawada Jail, named after Gandhi and Tilak. These don’t house inmates. Tourists also can witness the faasi yard where death sentences are executed. So, if you are planning for Pune, a trip to Yerawada Jail must be on your itinerary.

3. Tihar Jail :

Where: New Delhi

Tihar Jail is the largest complex of prisons in India as well as in South Asia. It is located in Tihar Village, 3 km from Janakpuri, to the west of New Delhi. Originally, Tihar was a maximum-security prison run by the State of Punjab. In 1966 control was transferred to Delhi. The prison is styled as a correctional institution, whose main objective is to convert its inmates into ordinary members of society by providing them with useful skills, education, and respect for the law.

You will be surprised to know that there is a prison industry within the walls, manned wholly by inmates, which bears the brand Tihar. Over the years its activities have expanded to include Carpentry, Weaving (Handloom), Tailoring, chemicals, Handmade paper, Commercial art, and Bakery.

Photo of 6 Indian Prisons Where You Can Visit As A Tourist 4/8 by Bongyatri - Sourav and Anindita

In Tihar Jail, you can spend a typical day like other prisoners in the jail and wear jail uniforms, do all activities that prisoners do, eat food cooked by the prisoners, and are not allowed to use mobile phones. However, the visitors will be allowed to stay only with selected inmates of the prisons. They will be shortlisted based on their track record. Isn’t it thrilling?

4. Hijli Jail

Where : Kharagpur, West Bengal

It is a former detention camp operated during the period of British colonial rule in India. It played a significant role in the Indian independence movement. It was opened in 1930 to house the protestors and armed agitators during the non-cooperation movement. In 1931, a firing incident was taken place in this jail which is infamous as the Hijli firing. This is the only known incident of firing inside a prison or detention camp in India.

The detention camp was closed in 1937 and was reopened in 1940. In 1942 it was closed for the final time and the detainees were transferred elsewhere. During the Second World War, it was occupied by the US Air Force. Today, the camp is also known for being the birthplace of IIT Kharagpur. In 1990, a part of the former detention camp buildings was converted to house the Nehru Museum of Science and Technology.

5. Sangareddy Prison

Where: Hyderabad

This is a 220-year-old colonial-era jail that is now converted into a museum. As per the PWD Records, this jail was constructed in the year 1796, during the Prime Ministership of Salar Jung I. This prison is spread across an area of 3 acres, out of which the jail building occupies 1 acre.

Photo of 6 Indian Prisons Where You Can Visit As A Tourist 6/8 by Bongyatri - Sourav and Anindita

This place was converted into a museum in June 2016. It has been providing visitors a unique experience of the day-to-day life of prisoners in India under the ‘Feel the Jail’ scheme started by the Prisons Department of the Govt. of Telangana. It offers 24-hour confinement to visitors interested in spending time behind the bars to experience the feeling of being under detention.

6. Viper Island

Where: Andaman Island

Viper Island is a small island in Andaman. It has a long history. The construction of the Viper Jail was carried out during 1864-67. However, the importance of Viper Island as a penal colony declined after the construction of the Cellular Jail in 1906. Upon arrival at Viper Island, you will see the remains of the former prison guardhouse beside the pier head. The two-storied jail building stands as a semi-ruin.

Photo of 6 Indian Prisons Where You Can Visit As A Tourist 7/8 by Bongyatri - Sourav and Anindita

The conditions at the jail were such that the place got the notorious name, "Viper Chain Gang Jail." The warden of this jail often changed but inmates used to call the warden "The black mamba". Brij Kishore Singh Deo, popularly known as Maharaja Jagannath of Puri, was kept in the Viper Jail, where he died in 1879.

However, Viper Island is a serene, beautiful tourist destination and can be approached in 20 minutes from the Phoenix Bay jetty. This place is visited by a number of tourists as it has multiple attractions with historical importance and has mesmerizing picnic spots with natural picturesque environments.

So, if you are tired of visiting routine kinds of places and are wishing to visit some different kind of place, then you don’t have to think twice to visit these interesting jails in India.

Jail tourism initiative inaugurated by Maharashtra CM in Pune

The launch of the event was done by 10 students from Genba Sopanrao Moze Vidyalay, chaperoned by three teachers, and were among the first few tourists inside the jail premises.

The jail tourism initiative had been inaugurated by Uddhav Thackeray, chief minister of Maharashtra through video conferencing at Pune’s Yerawada Central Jail on Tuesday (January 26). Ajit Pawar, Deputy CM and guardian minister of Pune, was present at the prison premises on the occasion of the 72nd Republic Day.

“Now one doesn’t need to commit a crime in order to visit the jail. Instead of “jail bharo”, people can now indulge in “jail firo”. This book by Balasaheb Thackeray describes the then jails - a container with phenyl, aluminium cutlery, and a space to sleep. That cutlery served all kinds of purposes,” said Uddhav Thackeray, chief minister of Maharashtra while speaking through video conference.

He also reminisced about the historical importance of the jail premises where the revolutionary Chapekar brothers were sent to the gallows for the murder of British official WC Rand and his security escort for their brutalities on citizens of Pune during the plague in Pune in 1890s. The same yard where the Chapekar brothers were hung for their crimes, was also the place where Ajmal Kasab, convicted in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks, was also hanged to death.

“Nana Patole and Aditya Thackeray had spoken about expanding tourism in Maharashtra only days before this proposal was put forth. Home minister Anil Deshmukh came up with the unique idea and came to my house one day to put it across. ADG (Prisons) Sunil Ramanand told me about the places where various freedom fighters were imprisoned. 150 years is not a small time period. Even today it is a specimen of architecture. Balasaheb Thackeray had also been in this jail. He had written to Late Meena Tai. I happened to come across that letter recently,” said Ajit Pawar, deputy home minister, Maharashtra.

Freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Motilal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had been imprisoned here during the freedom struggle of India.

“We visited the Gandhi yard, Nehru yard, the fashi (hanging) yard, and witnessed history that we teach our children. It was an experience that brought those lessons to life,” said Nathu Jagdale, teacher at Moze school.

Local legislator Sunil Tingre, divisional commissioner Saurabh Rao; district collector Rajesh Deshmukh; ADGP (prison) Sunil Ramanand, and police commissioner Amitabh Gupta were also present during the inauguration.
