thanks for creating a unique blog

Hello Jael, thanks for a very interesting post. My daughter loves to read, and I’m planning on taking the family overseas to the USA next year. I thought I could inspire her by giving her something to read related to travel. I’m leaning toward National Parks of the USA by Quarto Kids, and then taking them to visit a few of the parks while we’re there. I think they’d have a blast. Thanks again for sharing :)

KidsTravelBooks for 10-year-olds

Children’s books about travel for 10-year-olds.

Below you will find a selection of children’s travel books for 10-year-olds. Please note:

I am currently going through the 1900+ children’s books on the Global Bookshelf to assign age ranges. So, this is a tiny portion of books that have been assigned an age range. Please come back and take a look for new additions. I’m estimating that I’ll be done updating by the end of 2019.

Looking for books for a specific destination?

I encourage you to:

  • Search for books by destination
  • Find a book that looks interesting and click on it
  • Look for the tab that reads “additional information” under the image of the book. If I’ve assigned the book the age range, it’ll be listed there as well. If the ages listed are way-off (for example, you find a great picture book for your 1-year-old but then click to find out it’s for 14-year-olds), then keep looking.
  • If the book seems like it may be a good fit, you can click on the “Amazon Reviews” tab if reviews exist, or click on the more info button towards the top and read on.

Looking for children’s books by a certain age?

Please note that the specified ages are according to what was listed on Amazon. Some of these may not be consistent as it seems each publisher picks their own age range. With that in mind, the books listed below are what the publisher said included 10-year-olds. However, you know your kid best and maybe there’s something good in the 8, 9, 11, or 12-year range.

If you don’t see what you like here you can also:

  • Look at the section for children’s books about travel for 9-year-olds .
  • Look at the section for children’s books about travel for 11-year-olds .
  • Look at travel books geared for kids of all ages .
  • Look at travel books that didn’t have a specified age range .

This compelling middle grade novel is a collection of interwoven stories detailing the experiences of several Southeast Asian and East Asian American families at a Chicago airport. The stories are written by twelve different authors and explore identity, friendship, and family relationships. Some of the interactions of the characters cause ripple effects throughout the airport, and the protagonists of the stories learn how to speak up for themselves. I found it hard to put down this book, and so will young readers.

It's also clear that something suspicious is going on since his dad is keeping part of the vacation plans a secret. I read this book out loud to my son and although there is a serious side to Theo's story, we spent much of the time in stitches, laughing at the hilarious characters that Theo encounters and the misadventures that befall him.

FROM THE DESK OF ZOE WASHINGTON (series) by Janae Marks

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I adored this book about Zoe, a 12-year-old girl who, after starting a correspondence with her incarcerated father, Marcus, sets out to prove his innocence. Zoe's mother always kept Zoe from having a relationship with her father, who was serving time for murder, but one day, Zoe discovers a letter addressed to her from him and decides to write back. Zoe and her friend, Trevor, start to investigate Marcus' trial conviction, learning about systemic racism in the justice system. While the subject is certainly very serious, Janae Marks has written a marvelously accessible story with likable, nuanced characters.

Garvey's Choice book cover

GARVEY'S CHOICE by Nikki Grimes

He has a family who loves him, but his father's vision for him is different than what Garvey wants for himself. Garvey feels free when singing in the the school chorus and when he shares his secrets with his best friend, Joe. Wonderful.

purple box set of The Complete Nate Trilogy

BETTER NATE THAN EVER (series) by Tim Federle

13-year-old Nate's snappy narrative about his adventure in New York City auditioning for E.T. The Musical ( yes, you read that right ) is marvelous and incredibly funny. The scene in which Nate reads the "sides" during his audition had me laughing so hard I could barely see the words through my tears.  The two sequels are just as hilarious as the original.

Jake has gotten kicked out of his last school and is now living with the eccentric, artistic, homeschooling Applewhite family. The father is directing a local production of   The Sound of Music and no one is more surprised than Jake when he discovers he loves performing. I loved the quirky characters and the boundless energy of this book. When the family has to pull together to get the show up after they are blackballed by a local stage mom, the results are hilariously successful. I really enjoy how the story reinforces the necessity of cooperation when putting on a play.

sal and gabi set

My son listened to this on audiobook and loved it! He was alternating between gasping and laughing. Salvador Vidón is the new kid, but is also an unusual kid because he is able to open portals into alternate universes with his mind. He meets Gabi Reál who is a bit suspicious of his explanation about the mysterious things that happen when he is around. This is a really fun book, with lots of fast-paced action and crazy humor. Highly recommended!

the great good thing

THE GREAT GOOD THING (series) by Roderick Townley

Do characters seem real beyond the pages? Well, that's because they are. In this metafictional tale, Sylvie decides that 80 years of living the same story over and over as the character in a book has gotten a bit dull. She decides to break the most important rule of all book character rules: she looks up at The Reader. Townley explores the wonder of books and how they merge with our imaginations and lives. I heartily recommend this for grown-ups, too.

After her oldest sister, Grace, disappears, Willa believes Grace has run away from her unpleasant fiancé to join the Full Moon Fayre. The Wonderling book cover showing fox and swirled design

THE WONDERLING by Mira Bartók

Bartók creates a marvelous world that draws upon the familiar and fantastical. The protagonist is a "groundling," a fox-like creature who escapes with his bird-friend, Trinket, from a grim orphanage to head out on an adventure. Their adventure circles round and they plan to rescue the other orphans. There is something very Dickensian about the story, and unlike some books set in strange hybrid worlds, Bartók's incredible descriptions and use of language, along with her illustrations build a fully-realized, fascinating universe.

The Genius Under the Table 2021 middle grade book cover

THE GENIUS UNDER THE TABLE by Eugene Yelchin

Find it: Amazon | B o okshop

Yelchin's illustrated, semi-autobiographical novel about growing up in the USSR is hilarious. Yevgeny’s ballet-obsessed mother wants him to be a dancer like her beloved Baryshnikov. His family is aware that displaying talent leads to small freedoms that may otherwise be elusive in their restricted society. Little does she know that Yevgeny spends his evenings drawing on the underside of the dining room table. Yevgeny’s Jewish family lives in such a small apartment that, as the youngest, he sleeps under the table. The discovery of Yevgney's talent provides the family with some hope. Yelchin's writing and illustrations masterfully walk the line between tragedy and comedy. Very enjoyable!

When Arthur soothes the bear, he is enlisted to accompany the bear on a ship to England, for the bear is a gift from King Haakon to King Henry. Weird Rules to Follow book cover

WEIRD RULES TO FOLLOW by Kim Spencer

This coming of age story set in 1980s British Columbia follows Mia, an 11-year-old Indigenous girl, as she navigates the ups and downs of growing up. The story is structured as a series of vignettes in which Mia narrates her observations about the differences between Indigenous and white families, how her friendship with her best friend, Lara, changes over time and her sometimes chaotic family life. This book was one of my favorite reads of the year, not just because of Mia's strong voice but because I think even grown-up readers will come away richer after reading it. It will also make a wonderful read aloud.

The longer she spends as a Moth Keeper, the more she wants to visit the sun-village, even though the light will damage the creatures she must care for. The beautiful illustrations are irresistible and Anya's coming of age story celebrates the relationship between nature and community. Luminous.

drama by raina telgemeier book cover with two boys and a girl walking on stage

DRAMA by Raina Telgemeier

This tale is from one of the best loved graphic novelist. Callie wants to be in her school's latest production but she doesn't think she can sing so instead she helps out as the set designer and is determined to create a Broadway-worthy show. The "drama" of the book's title could easily refer to the friendship and romantic entanglements of the middle school crew ( when is middle school not melodramatic? ) as well what happens on the stage.

New Kid graphic novel by Jerry Craft book cover featuring Black student reading notebook

NEW KID (series) by Jerry Craft

After I brought this book home from the library, my son loved it and read it ten times in a row! I'm not surprised because after I read it, I realized how nuanced this story is. Art-loving Jordan navigates a new school as one of the few kids of color in his seventh grade class. Craft's story offers much to discover, even after multiple readings. There are now two sequels Class Act , and School Trip .

The Crossover graphic novel

THE CROSSOVER by Kwame Alexander, illustrated by Dawud Anyabwile

This is a graphic novel adaptation of Alexander's verse novel of the same name. The story tale about twin brothers is touching, relatable and extraordinarily engaging. Josh narrates his story of coming to terms with his brother's new girlfriend, sibling rivalry, the pressure and joy of playing basketball and his relationship with his father. The second graphic, Booked , also an adaptation of the original verse novel, is about a boy who plays soccer.

THE TRYOUT by Christina Soontornvat, illustrated by Joanna Cacao

Christina, whose father immigrated from Thailand, and her best friend, Iranian-American Megan, decide to try out for cheerleading, in the hopes that it will help them make friends and rise in the ranks of the middle school social scene. For the most part, the girls enjoy the experience, but their friendship experiences some strain and both girls endure racist comments in their majority-white, small Texan town. Christina also enjoys a strong and loving relationship with her parents and extended family. Fabulous.

Hudi's imaginary friend, Chunky, convinces him to try baseball but Hudi's talents lie not in sports. Hudi, the only Mexican-Jewish kid in his Texas neighborhood, prefers theater and comedy. An uplifting and funny graphic novel with a very likable protagonist.

Tom's Midnight Garden book

TOM'S MIDNIGHT GARDEN by Philippa Pearce, adapted and illustrated by Edith

This lesser known (at least to American children) classic is beautiful, eerie, moving and wondrous. Those same qualities mean it translates well to the graphic novel format. In the 1950s, Tom goes to live with his uncle and aunt where a clock strikes 13. On the grounds is a gorgeous garden but his playmate is mysteriously from the 19th century. Physically, the book is extra large, so it's easy to get sucked into the illustrations.

Total Garbage book cover

TOTAL GARBAGE: A MESSY DIVE INTO TRASH, WASTE, AND OUR WORLD by Rebecca Donnelly

I enjoyed this book, but I do not understand why it did not have a table of contents! Donnelly does a great job of making the topic of garbage entertaining while also drawing much needed attention to the difficulties and problems that our continued creation of garbage creates. She uses history and cultural examples in art and anthropology to give a full picture of the whys and hows and whats of garbage as well as addressing questions about the consequences of such a mess.

Rosen presents the historical backdrop of Shakespeare's England, describes life in Renaissance England, looks closely as several of the most famous plays, and discusses Shakespeare's legacy. Excellent.

Pele the King of Soccer graphic novel book cover

PELÉ KING OF SOCCER by Eddy Simon, illustrated by Vincent Brascaglia

This graphic novel biography of Brazilian fútbol star, Pelé is fantastic. You know a book is good when it's about sports and I can't put it down. Author/Illustrator team Simon and Brascaglia convey the storied life of the greatest soccer player, from his youth, when he was nurtured to love the game by his father, to his amazing career and work as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. Translated from French.

King george what was his problem book cover

KING GEORGE: WHAT WAS HIS PROBLEM?: THE WHOLE HILARIOUS STORY OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION by Steve Sheinkin, illustrated by Tim Robinson

Formatted in a reluctant-historian, reader-reluctant friendly fashion, with lots of sub-sections, quotes, maps and illustration, this book is an informative delight. Sheinkin begins his narration by offering up the idea that his book is a "step-by-step guide to starting a revolution." Step 1: Kick out the French." And on it goes from there. If your kid has captured the history bug after reading, give them Sheinkin's follow-up, Two Miserable Presidents: Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About the Civil War.

A Day in the Life of A Poo A Gnu and You book cover showing comic squares of natural elements

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A POO, A GNU, AND YOU (series) by Mike Barfield, illustrated by Jess Bradley

Got a kid who loves facts and science, but also loves to laugh? This comic book style text on all things in the natural world will keep them reading all night. Packed with information on everything from Mars to poison jellyfish, Barfield's text and Bradley's illustrations make science highly entertaining.

A Shot in the Arm book cover showing comic-style syringe and germs

A SHOT IN THE ARM by Don Brown

Brown's Big Ideas That Changed the World is a great nonfiction graphic novel series and A Shot in the Arm is a timely story of one of the most important public health developments in human history. Brown focuses on the history of vaccinations beginning primarily in the 17th century with smallpox, and details the important scientists and public figures that were integral to their development and deployment all the way through to the present.

Side by Side Declaration of Independence book

THE SIDE-BY-SIDE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE by David Miles

This is one of the best books about the Declaration of Independence I have ever read. Miles is exceptionally talented at decoding the archaic text of the 200+ years old document for both kids and grown-ups. I learned more about the document from this book than I ever did in civics class, AND it was entertaining, even humorous! Collage style illustrations present the original text, amusing narrators/explainers, give contemporary context and invite the reader to think critically about the document. Superb.

Astronaut's Guide to Leaving the Planet book cover

THE ASTRONAUT'S GUIDE TO LEAVING THE PLANET by Terry Virts, illustrated by Andrés Lozano

Future space travelers will love these tips about blasting off into space by former astronaut Terry Virts. Virst describes what it's really like to see Earth from space, the insider information on what it's really like to train and travel as an astronaut, as well as things that hopeful star travelers can do today. Stellar.

Orange book cover of Factopia with yellow swish

FACTOPIA!: FOLLOW THE TRAIL OF 400 FACTS by Kate Hale, illustrated by Andy Smith

Kids who don't want to read long narratives are often attracted to books about facts. The short and fascinating details of outrageous facts peak their curiosity. What I love about FACTopia! is that it takes readers on a journey rather like a game, in which the readers is led down a trail of information which is all somehow connected, but still distinct. Think of it as "400 degrees of Kevin Bacon."

I LOVED Rain Reign--the voice was so spot on, and it was very touching.

I'm also a big fan of Millicent Min, Girl Genius--such a hilarious book. There are two companion book told from Stanford & Emily's points of view: Stanford Wong Flunks Big Time, and So Totally Emily Ebers, not quite as good as Millicent's, but they explore the same story and it was fun to read about the events from their perspectives, so your son may enjoy that.

Thank you for the suggestions! Here is mine: my son just started reading "Dragon Orb: Firestorm", by Mark Robson. He cannot put it down. Looking forward to read the following volumes.

Same as Chronicles of Narnia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and George's Secret Key to the Universe. Well actually, the whole George's series.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Yes! I bet she will love it.

Totally agree with your Riordan remarks. I am finishing the Roman series this week. The Norse series is out in the fall. Loved your list, a mix of old and new. I have an eight year old and we are looking for books to read together. DiCamillo has been great for us. Our whole family loved The Tiger Rising, great for talking about grief. One of my daughter's favourites was The Cats of Tanglewood Forrest by Charles de Lint.

My son is nine, a very highly skilled reader, and incredibly picky. We have had a hard time finding books he actually wants to read. He just finished House of Robots by James Patterson, and he loved it! I've never seen this kid get so into a book. He's begging me to read it soon so that he has someone to talk to about it. Just thought I'd share.

I enjoyed reading this post and since I have a ten-year-old, I thought it would be nice to comment sharing some of her recommendations - Ginger Pye and also Pinky Pye, both animal stories by Eleanor Estes...and also two out-of-print treasures that share about a family's life in Germany after WW2 - The Ark and Rowan Farm (by Margot Benary-Isbert) - they are wonderful and you feel you are living in the post war times with this wonderful family! Thanks for your site, I love reading through the booklists and recommendations..great ideas for books to read and read-aloud..I especially love the lists of books from the different decades!

June 09, 2015 at 8:03 am

Thank you for the recommendations, Nancy. I just read Ginger Pye out loud to my kids and they are already begging for Pinky Pye.

My son is 8 years old and when he was 7 years old he read the first two books in the Frank Einstein series. We were both giggling really hard they were wonderful to read. Another good read is Robots Rule by C.J. Richards. The Creature from my Closet series by Obert Skye was also a good laugh for both of us. He also got into Harry Potter this summer. The Boxcar Children series and the Magic Treehouse series are also good.

The Sisters Grimm series was a great set of books. They follow the story of two sisters whose parents disappeared mysteriously several years ago. The first novel starts with them being brought to live with a grandmother they never knew they had and learning that they are descended from the famous Grimm brothers and the town their grandmother lives in is populated by fairytale characters. The girls become fairytale detectives, solving problems in the town and working to solve the mystery of their parents disappearance, while tensions mount between the humans and the fairytale creatures.

The 10 Best Travel Journals And Activity Books For Kids

Senior Staff Writer, HuffPost

From left to right: The Ultimate Travel Journal for kids, And So...The Adventure Begins, On The Plane activity book.

Family vacations are some of the happiest experiences that a child can have, but that doesn’t mean that executing a trip with children in tow is easy. Whether you’re flying, taking a road trip or simply exploring a neighboring city, keeping a little one entertained and engaged while in transit can be a challenge.

Luckily, there is one simple, affordable and screen-free way to keep kids interested in their surroundings and busy during travel time: a travel journal or activity book.

I was definitely an enthusiastic diarist on my childhood trips — I loved recording my family’s comings and goings, and what we’d seen, eaten and talked about. (I also made sure to note every time my siblings annoyed me.) I always used plain notebooks, but there are now plenty of travel-specific workbooks that are full of creative prompts and projects to stimulate the imagination and enhance the overall experience for a child.

Below, I’ve rounded up some of the best travel journals and activity books for kids from Amazon and Maisonette. Pick up a few for your smallest travel companions and keep them happy and busy as you embark on summer journeys.

The Best Books for 10 Year Olds

travel books for 10 year olds

Recommending books by age can be tricky because kids of the same age often have different reading levels and preferences. Still, in creating this list of books for 10 year olds, I focused on choosing stories with kids around the same age and those with an average subject matter maturity level. All the stories on this list are personal favorites with some being easier to read than others. You’ll find graphic novels, funny stories, science fiction, and some stories with a tinge of sadness.

If you’ve been on the hunt for new books that your 10-year-old will love, these are some winners to try.

Kids who like historical fiction (WW II) and books set in New York will like this one — although it’s nowhere near as good as this author’s debut .

Call Me Adnan

Call Me Adnan

Published: June 13, 2023

Adnan loves table tennis, his family, and the aviation alphabet. He’s color blind, left-handed, and has a big sister and little brother, with another sibling on the way. When his family takes a summer trip so he can compete in a tennis tournament, an unbelievable tragedy occurs, shattering their life as they know it.

I don’t like sad stories. Life is hard enough, but the author drew me into this story and I couldn’t stop reading. The verse format is enjoyable and provides a wide enough window into the plot and characters. Most importantly, this story is very hopeful, despite the tragedy.

The Next Great Paulie Fink

The Next Great Paulie Fink

Published: April 16, 2019

This is a great book that lends itself perfectly to the audio format since it’s written in part as interviews. When a new student arrives at a middle school, she discovers that the class can’t stop talking about a former classmate. As she tries to learn more about him, she and the other kids learn a lot about themselves, the many layers of a person, and how to be kinder to others. This one took a while to get into, but once I did, it was fantastic.

Yes, at times it may be stressful, but it is also filled with excitement and anticipation for what we are going to do and what we might see. Let’s build up that same excitement for our kids!

Over the years I have collected a wealth of books on an amazing array of topics to share with my children before we travel. I truly feel that these books significantly increased our family’s vacation experience and I would love to help do the same for you!

Helping Your Child Become a Reader for Life

travel books for 10 year olds

AstroStar/Shutterstock.com

Giving your kids access to great books that fire their imagination—like all those listed above—is essential to helping them develop a life-long love of reading. However, there are some other important things that you can do, too!

For example, taking turns to read aloud from a book they’re interested in (ideally one that’s a little above their current reading level) is a great way to both engage their mind and challenge them to develop their reading skills to follow the story.

Talking about the story that your child is reading alone or that you’re reading together is also very effective, helping with retention and keeping them interested in the story and any issues it raises.

And finally, avoid reading from becoming a chore: instead, encourage your child to view reading as a relaxing, fun activity. Try creating a cozy reading corner or having a regular time during the day when you both snuggle up together on the sofa to read your books. This is a routine that could benefit the whole family!

Did you have a young reluctant reader who’s transformed into a bookworm? We’d love to know your tips for helping kids develop a life-long love of literature – let us know in the comments below!

The Best Train Books for Kids of all Ages

April 12, 2021 by Meg Leave a Comment

If you have aspiring train engineers at your house, you’ll love this curated list of our favorite train books for kids…from our train-loving family to yours!

If you have aspiring train engineers at your house, you'll love this curated list of our favorite train books for kids...from our train-loving family to yours!

Note: This post includes affiliate links, meaning I earn a small commission (at no additional cost to you) if purchases are made through those links. Please see my full disclosure to learn more.

As a mom of three young boys, I’ve spent a lot of hours over the past eight years playing with and reading about TRAINS.

All of my boys have gone through a serious train phase (my youngest is still in the thick of it!). Trains are right up there with dinosaurs and construction trucks for my kids biggest obsession.

Apparently we’re not the only train-loving family around, because there are TONS of picture books written about trains. Goodnight trains. Dinosaur trains. Rainbow freight trains…the list goes on and on.

Out of the dozens (maybe even hundreds???) of train books we’ve read over the years, the ones listed below are our absolute favorites. So, if you have a train lover in your house, be sure to check out these train books for kids!

The Best Train Books for Kids

Note: I’ve grouped the books by age to help you choose the ones that are best for whatever phase you’re currently in. That’s not to say that young kids can’t enjoy the longer books, or that you should stop reading simple books to older kids (let them read what they like!!!). After all, all of these books have been enjoyed by all of my kids, regardless of age. But, I know that as a parent sometimes it’s nice to know what to expect from a book before you put it on hold at the library.

Perfect train books for toddlers

The recommended “toddler” books typically have less text and simpler storylines that readers with short attention spans may enjoy more.

travel books for 10 year olds

Freight Train This Caldecott Honor book brings to life the simple experience of watching a freight train roll by your window. Toddlers will love identifying the color and type of each car as you flip through the pages, and the simple, calming text will lull them to sleep.

travel books for 10 year olds

Steam Train, Dream Train Colors The illustrations steal the show in this simple board book. Combined with fun rhyming text about giggle-worthy scenarios, like pink hippos blowing bubbles in a boxcar, this book checks all the boxes of a perfect bedtime story.

travel books for 10 year olds

Terrific Trains My boys love all the “Amazing Machines” books by Tony Mitton, and this one is no exception. Their favorite page is the picture dictionary at the back where you can learn about various train terminology and the parts of a train.

travel books for 10 year olds

Trains Go If you think all trains just say “Choo choo”…think again. This board book teaches kids about the many sounds that different types of trains make. (P.S. – If you like this one, he has a whole series of vehicle-themed board books .)

travel books for 10 year olds

Two Little Trains You probably know Goodnight Moon , but have you read this equally charming bedtime story by the same author? It tells the parallel stories of two trains…one real train…one toy train. The simple text is beautiful and calming, and I love the clever illustrations that highlight the different journeys of the “two little trains”.

Train books for preschoolers and older kids

Books in the “preschooler and older kids” category will have more text on each page and may have more complex plots.

travel books for 10 year olds

How to Train a Train Anytime I see a book illustrated by John Rocco, I immediately pick it up. He is a master of creating detailed, imaginative scenes that just make you want to linger on each page. In this book, his fabulous illustrations bring to life Eaton’s “guidebook” on everything kids need to know about how to catch and care for a “pet” train.

travel books for 10 year olds

The Little Engine that Could It’s a classic story that you probably know, but if you haven’t read this version illustrated by Loren Long, you’re missing out. The story stays true to Watty Piper’s original text (and rightly so), but Long gives kids even more to enjoy with his whimsical visual storytelling.

The Littlest Train

The Littlest Train Any child who has a train set will love this book about a toy train that accidentally gets bumped off the train table, and heads off to explore the world beyond the playroom. It’s my toddler’s favorite of ALL the books on the list (possibly because the big train shares his name).

travel books for 10 year olds

Locomotive This Caldecott winner is covered in shiny stickers for good reason. The illustrations are gorgeous and the story has a lilting, poetic feel that makes you feel as if you’re riding on the train rather than just reading about it. It is text heavy, so toddlers may not sit through the whole story in one sitting, but older kids will love it!

travel books for 10 year olds

Curious George Takes a Train We’re big fans of everyone’s favorite mischievous monkey. In this story, George is excited to go on a train trip with the man in the yellow hat, but (as usual) he gets himself into trouble when he tries to “help” the station master. Still, he manages to save the day in the end.

travel books for 10 year olds

The Polar Express It’s a Christmas classic, a Caldecott Medal winner, and it’s by one of the most respected children’s book illustrators of all time. All I can say is if you don’t already own it, add it to your Christmas list this year. And while you’re at it, get this one , too.

travel books for 10 year olds

Steam, Smoke, & Steel: Back in Time with Trains For kids who want more than just a cute story, this book is fabulous for teaching about the history of trains. It starts with a boy who wants to drive trains, just like his dad…and then continues back through history of several ancestors, highlighting how trains have evolved over time. Fascinating and informative.

travel books for 10 year olds

The Secret Subway This non-fiction book tells the fascinating (and true) story of New York’s first subway train, invented by Alfred Ely Beach’s. And while the story stands on its own, what I really love about this book is the unique artwork, which is a cross-over between illustration and stop-motion animation.

travel books for 10 year olds

DK Big Book of Trains This book is really text heavy, so you probably won’t read all of it, but it’s the kind of book I’ll leave out for my kids to discover. They love flipping through the pages, poring over all the photographs of trains. Then, we’ll sit down together and explore the pages together, picking up interesting facts as we browse.

travel books for 10 year olds

How Trains Work This interactive book is serious eye-candy for kids. Each page is packed with detailed illustrations, fun facts, and flaps to lift as you peek into the world of trains: past, present, and future.

Have you read any of the books on this list? Which is your favorite? And if I didn’t include one you love, drop the title in the comments below!

Bread and bagels at The Works Cafe in downtown Portland. Photo by Aimsel Ponti

From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

BEACH BAGELS

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily WHERE: 34 Old Orchard St., Old Orchard Beach. beachbagels.yolasite.com ______________

Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. It’s since become a permanent fixture there and uses the pizzeria’s wood-fired ovens to bake its bagels. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to Sunday WHERE: Fort Andross, 14 Maine St., Brunswick. dutchmans.me ______________

FORAGE MARKET

Making bagels at Forage Market involves a two-day aging process. The bagels are naturally leavened with wild yeast starter and baked next to a hardwood fire. There are usually five flavors available, including sesame and garlic. Breakfast sandwiches (including vegan options) are available. Forage also has a location in Lewiston. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 123 Washington Ave., Portland. foragemarket.com _____________

MISTER BAGEL

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 599 Forest Ave., Portland. misterbagelforestave.com ______________

At Rose Foods, the menu varies depending on the day, but there are usually six to eight flavors available. For example, should you pop in on a Friday, you’ll find a poppy and onion bialy (a cousin of the bagel that is not boiled). Rose Foods also makes a number of bagel sandwiches, including the Classic Nova with Nova lox and the Classic Whitefish. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily WHERE: 428 Forest Ave., Portland. rosefoods.me

______________

ROVER BAGEL

At Rover Bagel, you’ll find wood-fired plain, poppy, sea salt, sesame and everything bagels available most of the time, and the spread game here is strong with cream cheese options like lemon-thyme-honey cream and chili-garlic.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 10 West Point Lane Suite 10-204, Biddeford (Pepperell Mill). roverbagel.com

______________ Advertisement

SCRATCH BAKING CO.

You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 416 Preble St., South Portland. scratchbakingco.com ___________

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. The Maine Bagel really shines with a dozen kinds of cream cheese spreads, including raisin-walnut, lox, strawberry, cranberry-nut and bacon-chive.

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. WHERE: 117 Route 1, Scarborough. themainebagel.com Advertisement

THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.

WHEN: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily WHERE: 15 Temple St., Portland. workscafe.com
