Noah Hunt – Lead Singer of Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band (INTERVIEW)

  • By Leslie Michele Derrough

Noah Hunt has been the voice of Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s band since 1997, when he recorded the Shreveport-born blues guitar player’s second album, Trouble Is . We know a lot about the blonde-haired former ingénue who can channel Stevie Ray Vaughan with just a few plucks of a guitar string and that he is mighty obsessed with classic cars. But what do we know about the dark-haired man behind those vocal cords singing the blues rock that Shepherd is known for? “I’d rather just sing than talk about myself,” Hunt proclaimed with a hearty laugh upon starting our interview before their show in Biloxi earlier this month.

Shepherd may be the face and orator of the KWS Band but we felt it was time to get to know the other voice. Touring on the heels of a wonderful new album appropriately titled Goin’ Home , Hunt was again called upon to stir up the blues pot of gold, covering such classics as Bo Diddley’s “You Can’t Judge A Book By The Cover” and BB King’s “You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now,” both of which they have been performing live.

Hunt has always been a natural fit for Shepherd’s guitar tone. Despite earning a college degree in English, music steered his future from an early age. With soundcheck looming, Hunt opened up a bit about his life before and after Kenny Wayne.

Since we don’t know a lot about you, why don’t you tell us where you grew up and how you got into music.

Well, I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and I always loved music, even as a small child. I used to lay in bed when I was a little kid and make up songs when I was like three years old. When I was four, my parents got me piano lessons at the old Baldwin factory in town there. I think it was 1974, and they had a real advanced, for the time, kind of teaching method. It was sort of like the Yamaha method but it was very hands-on. I learned how to play piano and to read music and taught how to sing. So between the time I was four and seven, I had piano lessons and I really got the basics.

At the same time, I got a little record player, a kids record player, and I got tired of my own records so I went and pillaged my parents’ record collection and I loved The Beatles. I would play all their Beatles records, and this was before I was in Kindergarten, but I would play all their Beatles records and scratched them up (laughs). Then I kind of worked my way through their catalog. As I grew up and got older I moved on to like the Stones and Pink Floyd, and into my teen years I got into the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead. So I was pretty much raised on Classic Rock. I quit playing the piano when I was seven or eight because I got into sports and other things kids do. Then when I was sixteen, I taught myself to play guitar, which was pretty easy because of piano, but I pretty much just did that so I could accompany myself with singing. That’s always what came natural to me, the singing. I tried to be Jimi Hendrix for a while but I just couldn’t do it (laughs) so I had to focus on other things.

noahunt

You said you loved The Beatles. Which songs got your attention first?

The first Beatles song I remembered hearing was “I Saw Her Standing There.” My cousins had the 45 of that and I remember hearing that. Actually, they played it first. I think I stole it and took it home and put it on my record player (laughs). But I had the 45 of “I Saw Her Standing There” on one side and “I Want To Hold Your Hand” on the other side. And I think I was pretty much done.

When did you really start writing your own songs?

Well, you know, when I was in like fifth or sixth grade, I didn’t know how to play guitar yet. I was just kind of writing songs in my head. But when I was in my teen years and I taught myself to play guitar, then I started actually writing songs from beginning to end, coherent numbers. So it was in my teen years I started getting into that.

Do you remember one of your earliest times performing in front of an audience?

Yeah, I must have been about, I don’t know, six or seven, at some school thing maybe; some Christmas thing. I remember some of the adults said I had a nice voice or something (laughs). The first time I like played in a band in a bar, I think I was like fifteen or sixteen. I was too young to be in them but I could hold my end with the other guys.

Were you just singing or were you playing guitar too?

I was doing both but I was mainly singing.

You went to college and you majored in English. What were you planning to do with that degree?

I didn’t have much of a plan. I was just going to either be a writer or a lawyer. But then everyone said music is just too tough. I was in Ohio and this was the late 1980’s. But I got out of college in 1992 and I decided I didn’t want to be a lawyer or a writer. I wanted to play music for a living. My parents said, “Well, as long as you can pay your bills, you can do whatever you want.” So I started in bars five nights a week, then I started my first real band. I had bands in college, you know, but it was like hippie music and playing fraternity parties and stuff (laughs). We weren’t really serious but I started a band, Uncle Six. I was going to make demos and send them to the right people. There was a record promoter there in Cincinnati named Bill Scull and he was one of the biggest independent record promoters in the country and he had started a management company. He had signed people from the coast but he discovered me and signed me and he got my music in the right hands, into the big labels hands.

I think about 1994/1995, I had signed a deal with RCA, which is called a spec deal, which is where they kind of develop you as an artist, and it was kind of floundering. Well, I thought it was. And I got a call in early 1997 from a friend of ours named Bill Williams. He was a photographer and he took a lot of famous pictures of Stevie Ray Vaughan and BB King. He’s from Cincinnati and he knew me and he knew Ken [KWS’s father] and Kenny, and he called the management company and he wanted to talk to me. I called him back and he said, “Kenny Wayne Shepherd is looking for a lead vocalist.” I actually had his first record so I called them myself and sent them down some of the stuff that I had done for RCA and they called me right back and said, “Can you come down tomorrow?” And I said, “Sure.” So I asked my management company and my A&R guy if I could do it and they said, “Sure, go ahead and check it out.” So I went down there one night and we played the blues and Kenny and I stayed out all night and bonded and we’ve been together ever since (laughs). A few weeks later we started making Trouble Is .

Uncle Six actually recorded a couple of albums.

We did some records, yeah. We did two full records and two EPs. They’re awfully hard to find (laughs)

Now it’s tempting to go out and find them.

Good luck (laughs)

What was it like going into the studio for the first time? What surprised you about recording an album?

I had no idea how to do it. This was before the days of ProTools and all that. I found it kind of intimidating. I didn’t feel comfortable in the studio for a long time, until maybe five years ago.

I don’t know, the tape would roll and I would just feel this kind of tangible tension (laughs)

That little red light

Yeah, the little red light is what always intimidates you. Playing live and performing live is always so natural and I was always so good at doing that but I found the studio really restricting and confining. I’ve since been able to become familiar enough with it and I approach it in such a way that I know how to do it now (laughs). But it took me a while to try to harness that freedom and expression that I can do live and bottle that into a studio performance. And I think I continue to get better with it as the years go on.

You grew up on Classic Rock but how much actual blues music was in your world at that time?

I started to get into the blues when I was in college. Obviously, I was into Stevie Ray Vaughan and we used to go see him all the time. A lot of the Classic Rock people were all clearly influenced by American blues. So what happened in the late 1980’s was this Hair Metal. I just couldn’t stand it. I couldn’t stand popular music at the time. So I just started to go back and discover the influences, the people that influenced the people that influenced me. So I discovered Buddy Guy and Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf and it was just amazing. I was just unearthing these incredible treasures and I just soaked it up. So I guess you can credit Hair Metal for restoring my love of the blues (laughs)

Over the years, you’ve opened for some of the biggest bands in the world. Which ones were you most excited about?

On a personal level, probably Bob Dylan because I’m such a big Bob Dylan fan and I know his work so well. I’ve studied him and I’ve done term papers and all sorts of things about him before I ever met him. So on a personal level, that was pretty amazing for me. But I guess maybe overall, opening for the Stones and meeting them, that was pretty amazing. The only band I really haven’t met anyone in that I would like to would probably be Pink Floyd. I’ve never met any of the guys in Pink Floyd.

I’m sure you know Doyle Bramhall II and he toured with Roger Waters.

Oh yeah, Doyle and I are good friends and he was absolutely amazing [with Waters]. He is also a real inspiration to me before I ever met him.

Who was the first real rock star you ever met?

Oh wow, that’s a good question. I don’t know, I mean, the only rock stars growing up in Cincinnati were these guys who were in the band Pure Prairie League. Craig Fuller and Larry Goshorn and they had the song “Amy.” They actually had Vince Gill as the first guitarist. So those guys were friends with my dad. I think he did some legal work for them or something. So those guys were like the only real rock stars I knew. And that had an impression on me. A couple of those guys taught me how to use an electric tuner and gave me tips on how to be on stage and stuff. Those were the first that I actually knew.

What is it like having bass player Tony Franklin in the band with you?

Oh he’s fantastic. You know I saw him when I was fifteen with the Firm. We have Chris Layton, who I used to see with Stevie Ray Vaughan all the time, and Tony Franklin I’d see with the Firm when I was just a kid with a mullet out there jumping up and down wishing I was up there (laughs). So it’s pretty cool now, to say the least.

When performing these old blues songs by people like Albert King, how did you figure out where you were going to add in your personality to them without changing the original compositions too much?

I think by listening and learning. I was exposed to a lot of these songs, these blues songs, by other people doing them; like the Allman Brothers doing a blues song and Warren Haynes doing a blues song. And I just sing it like I hear it. I don’t really think about it. That’s just how it comes out. In my head, I’m singing it like I’ve heard them sing it but somehow when it actually comes out of my mouth, it’s my own thing and that’s the only way I can explain it. I guess hearing other people do great renditions of blues over the years helped me to just approach it like that.

On the new album, you and Warren Haynes sing “Breaking Up Somebody’s Home” and your voices sound so great together.

Yeah, I was really happy about that too. You know Warren and I have sang together over the years but just never on record, so I was real excited to do that. The first time I ever sang with Warren was in Austin, Texas, one night at Stubb’s BBQ and I think we did “Born Under A Bad Sign” back and forth. I remember everyone saying, “Boy, you sound really great together” and I was like, “Yeah, we really do.” Which was great for me because Warren was already a hero of mine at the time so that was a real milestone for me to have us sing together, doing that on a record, and it coming out so well. I was real happy about that, to say the least.

Everybody knows that Kenny Wayne has this car fetish. What does Noah Hunt like?

I’m on the other end of the spectrum. I like hot rods and stuff like that but I don’t have the thing like he does. I’m just like a real nerd (laughs). I’m a big PC gamer. I have this like portable PC gaming laptop that I have on the road and I just play games all the time (laughs). I read a lot of books, I read comic books, I play PC games.

What games do you play?

Oh jeez, I play all sorts of stuff. I really like role-playing games. I’m playing a game called Watch Dogs right now where you flit around in this futuristic version of Chicago and do all sorts of stuff (laughs). I play the shooter games, I play the sports games, I play role-playing games. It’s my guilty pleasure. I don’t drink anymore. I like to indulge in long gaming sessions (laughs). It’s an escape for me and it helps pass time. Out here we sometimes have a lot of time.

So what still excites you about playing and creating music?

Well, the most exciting thing is that I get to go out and do this in front of people who want to hear it every night and for two hours just have that perfect world on stage. For two hours on stage, everything, the travel, being away from loved ones and every other hardship, is worth it. It makes it all worth it and the opportunity I have to do that is still the most exciting. I’m excited about going and doing soundcheck and playing tonight right now as we stand here.

That was a great article! 🙂 I enjoyed reading it plus watching the videos. Thank you.

I liked the questions & direct objects presented by Leslie.

Noah’s answers let me know him a little bit more.

The editing and “typesetting” was perfect.

Great article! I first met Noah back in 1994. After our wedding rehearsal dinner our whole wedding party went out to a little bar on the east side of Cincinnati and saw a little skinny kid with long hair and no shirt just belting out some Allman Brothers and Grateful Dead tunes. We tried to make every Uncle Six show from then on and were sure that they would make it big. Along the same time I discovered a blues guitar prodigy named Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s first album and wore the CD out I played it so much. When we heard that Noah was leaving for KWSB we were both sad and happy as I was positive the combination would be perfect. First time I ever heard Noah sing “Deja Voodoo” I knew I was right. I think I’ve finally seen KWS more times than we saw Uncle Six and try to make every show they play in our area. We also still enjoy Noah’s non-KWS shows in town that are not frequent enough in our opinion. If you ever get a chance to see Noah do it. I was fortunate once to see him and his old duo partner Jason Dennie play in a little bar with about 20 other people one night. He is a tremendous songwriter in his own right but his versions of the old time blues classics like “King Bee” make you realize his voice was made for those tunes. Here’s hoping Noah and Kenny have many more years together!

Noah Hunt and Jason Dennie’s Long Black Train album is in my top 5 albums of all time. It is so raw and fantastic.

I know him from the town.i grew up.innew Richmond ohio.he played in a band armageddon, him and James eddashine and others .they played for parties I remember one.otside party I think a buddy of his accidentally caught his arm on fire.. I’m sure he remembers that night I do?

I truly enjoyed reading this article on someone I’ve listened to for a long time. A huge fan of The KWS Band since their begining and this article let me know the lead singer I’ve loved for years. Little is known. Also enjoyed the videos especially the one Noah thought couldn’t be found.(laugh). Now I know why he sounds sooo great. Thank you for this interview.

The concert at Rose Auditorium on June 24th was outstanding. As a result, I decided to Google Noah and read the posted interview. From the interview, I learned at Noah is truly into video games. A Cincinnati resident, computer engineer Sherman Adelson, developed an on-line video game and has perfected it over the last 7 years. It is for anyone who loves action figures and creatures. The web address is http://www.talesfromthestrangeuniverse.com . This is a game for those who may like an intellectual challenge!

At the Rose concert, the band closed with track No. 6 from “Goin’ Home.” The CD is outstanding, along with Noah’s vocals. This is a must buy!

we were priveledged to experience the kws band tonight in rutland vermont and it was a total gift to hear kenny wayne and noah hunt perform!!!

I was in Annapolis for my 1st KWS show and I wanted to hear heat of the sun so I yelled until Kenny said I’m gonna play your song and it was cool but better yet I went to d.c.and saw them 2nights later and yelled heat of the sun and Noah say to Kenny hey it’s the Annapolis guy and they play it again wow next night me and my best friend go to New Jersey to see them again and meet Kenny and Noah on the street and I got my picture taken with both guys they were the nicest coolest people I ever met I asked Kenny will u play heat of the sun tonight he says no it’s not on the set list hilarious and they didn’t I’m going to see Noah on my birthday in Annapolis should be awesome

I just saw the KWSB when they opened for Van Halen in Tampa on September 13. I am 51 yrs old and actually attended the concert with a couple of my twenty-something friends and they had never heard of KWS.

The irony is, they agreed with me. . Noah, Kenny and the gang had the house RAWKIN. My friends, of course, were thrilled with Kenny’s incendiary guitar and Noah’s great baritone. KWSB was a pretty tough act to follow for Van Halen, who gave a “decent” performance. They said that the KWSB made the price of their ticket worthwhile. Pretty outstanding accolades from the younger generation!

I agree totally. I saw them open for Van Helen in Charlotte, NC, and loved it! Wish they could have played much longer.

Very interesting. I used to spend a fair amount of time in Cincinnati as my mom lived there. I saw Uncle Six and enjoyed it enough that I bought their tape. The guitar in that band was pretty tasty. I remember some great slide guitar. I also used to check out the Goshorn Brothers and that was some more tasty guitar work, not to mention the rest of the band.

I saw the Experience Hendrix Wednesday night (3.23.16) in Worcester, Mass. and I just kept saying that Noah’s voice was amazing. I have to be honest, I never heard of Kenny Wayne Shepard (where have I been?) and now I have been looking on YouTube at everything and every song. This band is so good. I’m a huge Joe Bonamassa fan and Grace Potter fan and now a huge KWS fan!

I must have been on Mars, not to hear this man sing before; he is better than most. I would love to hear him sing some jazz. Maybe “Little L”

Great article! My band played many gigs with Uncle Six in the early 1990’s. Noah is a true talent! We knew it then and we were so proud of him when he got the opportunity to join the KWS Band. I’ll always support his projects:)

Just saw Noah perform with KWS at the Experience Hendrix Tour….great vocals & great music.

great article. just bought tix to see Noah here in Cincy at the Ludlow Garage. can’t wait.

I have been a fan of the blues since 1950.jimmy Reed John Lee Hooker Wlac Nashville. I went to see kwS at riverbend in June. Those guys really kicked it. If they play what I call some low down dirty blues. Kenny is number 1 blues player. Noah hunt is fabulous. The whole damn band.

Once I heard KWSB play about 1998 i’ve been hooked ever since. Every chance I get I go see them perform. What a voice and of course Kenny is phenomenal the whole band just fits perfectly together. In all my years I’ve never had a “crush” on anyone in the limelight… until I heard Noah sing & WOW! Sure wish he was single

This is an awesome article about a fabulous singer (who also happens to be hot). I’ve loved the KWS band for many years, and was always curious about that brown-haired guy with the beautiful smooth, deep voice. I had to laugh when he said he disliked “hair bands” which is why he got into the blues. I love hair metal too, though hey… We need all kinds of great music and KWS rocks my (and millions of other people’s) world

Great article, enjoyed it.

Going to see KWS in Lexington KY tonight. I’ve enjoyed KWS since Kenny was a skinny long blond hair guitar prodigy along with the good looking sultry baritone (wow) that became my favorite singer immediately the first time I saw them 20 years ago! Both are great as well as the entire band (SRV drummer-epic) and so glad they’ve been together all these years. Thanks for the music!!!

I’ve been a fan of blues since I was a young girl. Went to blue grass festivals during my teens in VT and Ct; listened to Hank Williams; John Mayall; Allman Brothers….played blues harmonica in my 20’s (with a band in NZ!!…23 yrs. old hitchhiking and partying all over the place! Now I’m in my 60’s and still loving the blues rock muscians (especially SRV) et al. I just saw Kenny Wayne Shepherd in Charles Town WV…OMG! it was AWESOME! I have a big fat crush on Noah! His eyes twinkle when he sings; he smiles at the audience and I noticed how BIG his hands were (like his voice when he belts those blues out!)! What a gifted and beautiful man he is! And, of course, Kenny is just unbelievably awesome on guitar! Listening to Kenny and Noah harmonize is the best! I hope they tour next year so I can get my daughter to experience a lifetime memory. P.S. Awesome drums! Awesome keyboards and bass players. I love them all!

I have lots of video and rehearsals of Uncle Six. They were together from 1993-1996. Just never got the recognition they deserved. Some of the video is on my YouTube site.

CLEVELAND, Ohio-- Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd will bring his namesake band’s “Dirt On My Diamonds Tour” to MGM Northfield Park on Thursday, May 16.

Since the release of his debut album, 1995′s “Ledbetter Heights,” Shepherd has been wowing audiences with a signature blend of blues and roots rock with modern flourishes.

The guitar prodigy began his career in his early teens after being mesmerized by the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan and spent the first five years of his career on the road almost non-stop.

On tour, Shepherd will be joined by Noah Hunt (singer/guitarist), Joe Krown (keyboards), Kevin McCormick (bass) and Chris “Whipper” Layton (drums).

Layton previously served as drummer in Vaughan’s backing band Double Trouble, has been performing with Shepherd for several years. Frontman Hunt originally hails from Cincinnati.

Shepherd’s current album “Dirt On My Diamonds Volume 1″ was released in November and includes a cover of Elton John’s “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting.”

Tickets on sale Friday, January 12 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster.com . Presale tickets will be available Thursday, January 11 starting at 10 a.m.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Noah Hunt: Cavalcade Q&A

Kenny Wayne Shepherd and vocalist Noah Hunt dropped by "Cavalcade" for a conversation and music from Shepherd's most recent album, Dirt On My Diamonds, Vol. 1 .

Shepherd, the Louisiana-born guitar prodigy, spins tales of meeting his childhood heroes in childhood; like an encounter at the age of 7 with Stevie Ray Vaughan, and later work with Stephen Stills. Shepherd enjoys a rewarding touring life that keeps him before crowds dug into roots rock and simple pleasures.

In our studio, and while in the company of Hunt, an impromptu jam is inevitable, and Kenny also picks a few favorites from our library, including his go-to music for cooking, which might surprise you.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd (born June 12, 1977) is an American blues and rock singer-songwriter and guitarist, hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, U.S.

Growing up on a musical diet of his father’s blues, soul and rock record collection, Shepherd began playing guitar age seven after meeting Stevie Ray Vaughan. He learned his craft through stopping and starting old cassette tapes, and teaching himself one note at a time, later playing along with his father’s records. At the age of 13, Shepherd was invited to play on stage with bluesman Brian Lee for a period of several hours, after which he was determined to pursue a career in music.

Using his father’s know-how and industry contacts, Shepherd signed with major-label Giant Records, who released his debut album “Ledbetter Heights” in 1995. The album was instantly popular, sold over half-a-million copies by early 1996 and exposed the singer-songwriter to a wave of new audiences. Combining the southern blues of Texas and Louisiana, as well as acoustic and rockin’ blues, “Ledbetter Heights” earned commercial success that’s known to be particularly rare within the blues genre.

In 1998, Shepherd's sophomore album “Trouble Is…” arrived, earning the songwriter a Grammy nomination, and was followed by “Live On” in 1999. Both albums have since been platinum certified and topped the U.S. Blues Chart. The album “The Place You’re In” was released in 2004 through Reprise Records, and was succeeded by the album and film “10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads”, which documents several veteran blues players in the American south.

Shepherd’s first live album “Live! in Chicago” (2010) was the guitarist’s fourth album to hit the top spot on the U.S. Blues Chart and even made inroads into the U.S. Rock Chart. The same year Shepherd appeared with Jimmy Fallon’s house band for an entire show, playing the same stratocaster Jimi Hendrix had played at Woodstock.

Returning to the studio the songwriter and guitarist released his first proper album in seven years, 2011’s “How I Go”. It an attempt to capture some of the magic of his earlier albums, Shepherd re-enlisted the help of vocalist Noah Hunt and Talking Head’s keyboardist Jerry Harrison. “Goin’ Home” was released in 2014 and proved to be the musician’s highest charting album, reaching No. 25 on the Billboard 200 and again topping the U.S. Blues Chart.

Live reviews

If you’re born with a name like Kenny Wayne Shepherd, you’re probably only ever going to grow up to become a blues rock musician; that’s certainly how it proved with the man from Shreveport, Louisiana, who signed his first record deal at the tender age of just thirteen and has been a staple of the charts in his native U.S. since 1995, when he was eighteen years old. His musical style runs the gamut between blues rock and hard rock, and that’s something that’s reflected in his hugely energetic live shows; Shepherd is a rocker at heart and proves it with some terrific guitar playing and a voice that sounds just as good on stage as on record, but as the years have rolled by, his gigs have increasingly come to represent Shepherd as a musician; there’s stripped-back acoustic songs, blues classics and occasionally aggressive all-out rock, all in the space of a couple of hours. Accordingly, Shepherd maintains a cult following on both sides of the Atlantic; he’s one of his genre’s biggest talents.

after seeing KWS band last year at the O2 islington it was a no brainer to go to one of my favorite venues the shepherds bush empire.

Ben Poole was a surprisingly entertaining opener but when Kenny Wayne hit the stage it went up a level, over the years he has got more polished in his act. Noah Hunt has a unique voice and pulls the band together but KWS guitar is something else he must surely be among the best around these days, one minute his blistering speed has your mouth wide open and then he is playing slow melodic

blues that can make you cry.

He went through some old, some new and a blues medley but the encore was something else Blue on Black a favorite track and long unbelievable version of Voodo Chile for over 10 minutes making you wish it would never end

The KWS Band are not just a straight blues band so next time hes in town give yourself a treat and see a guitar legend in the making

We attended The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band show last night at the Canton Palace Theater. It was all we could have wanted and then some. The talented Kenny gave everything in his music, as did the rest of the Band. They are one of the only bands that I have ever heard live that sounds as good as, if not better than their CD. If you ever have the opportunity to see this AMAZING band,DO IT! You will NOT be disappointed. Rock on Guys!❤

The show was AMAZING!!! I had a huge smile on my face the entire time. Kenny's fingers were flying on his guitars. He sang quite a bit, which I also enjoyed. A tribute song to Stevie Ray, Jimi and a couple to Mr. BB King - Kenny was feeling his Blues for sure. This show was better than when I saw him last year at BB King's in NYC. I can't wait to see what's next. The band was really GREAT!!!

One of the best show have I seen in the last 10 years.

They played some songs from the new CD that I enjoyed in addition to their old repertoire such as true lies, blue on black and a great Voodoo Child where Kenny played the guitar so beautiful.

After the concert Kenny and Noah signed autographs and made photos with fans

Saw the band performing in a smaller venue De Pul in Weert the Netherlands. Kenny is a remarkable guitar player and probably the best I have seen performing live. But also the other band members deliver a solid performance. This band is a must see live. Grab the opportunity when you can see them live.

Great show; but wish they had a longer set!!!! V H was good; but they should have been the headliner!! Blue on Black is on of my favorites...seats could have been better; not on the asle where it was a constant flow of people milling around, or just standing.

Shepherd revisits … ‘Trouble’-some … past on tour

noah hunt tour

The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band will play Robins Theatre in Warren Wednesday on a tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of the band's "Trouble Is..." album. (Photo by Amy Harris/Invision/AP)

“Trouble Is …” was anything but for Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

The dreaded second album — a pitfall for so many musicians — cemented the young guitar player’s status as one of the blues’ most successful artists, and one with crossover appeal to rock fans.

The album topped Billboard’s blues chart, the single “Blue on Black” topped Billboard’s mainstream rock chart and spawned three other rock singles ( “Slow Ride,” “Somehow, Somewhere, Someway” and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Everything Is Broken” ) on its way to selling more than a million copies.

Shepherd and his band have big plans for celebrating the 25th anniversary of that album, including some musical and film components he said he can’t talk about just yet.

But the band also will be showcasing the album Shepherd described as, “Not only a monumental album for us but for the genre,” on a tour that includes a concert Wednesday at Warren’s Robins Theatre.

The band is playing deep cuts from the album that haven’t been regulars in the set list for decades and trying to recapture the original feel of the hits, which have a tendency to change after years of being played live.

“We wanted to authentically recreate the original sounds for the record, try to recreate that live, the minute details of everybody’s parts” Shepherd said during a telephone interview. “‘Blue on Black’ had morphed and evolved and in some ways gotten further away from what it originally was. We pressed the reset button on that song, and we tried to decide which ones we needed to be really authentic with what was represented on the album and the songs we could take creative liberties with.”

The response from the early dates on the tour has been encouraging.

“The general consensus, everyone I’ve been talking to, is that album could be released today,” Shepherd said. “That’s always my goal, to make timeless music.”

One “Trouble Is …” song that’s taken on a very different meaning for Shepherd is “I Found Love (When I Found You).”

“I wrote that when I was 18 years old,” he said. “Back then, I hadn’t found the love of my life. I was thinking of a way to tell a girl, another person that I never knew true love until I met you. Now when I play that song, all I can think of is my wife. So many over the years have written me or told me, ‘That was our wedding song’ or ‘I walked down the aisle to this song.'”

Shepherd had plenty of time to spend with his wife and their six children when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down his touring plans. Instead of spending time on the road with his band, Shepherd hit the road with his family, taking a trip to the Grand Canyon and camping in Sedona.

“This is the most consistent amount of time I’ve had at home since I started my music career,” he said. “My wife and I decided to take the opportunity to make lifelong memories.”

Shepherd had two albums’ worth of new music recorded when the pandemic started, but fans probably will have to wait a while longer to hear them. Shepherd said it didn’t make sense to him to release new music when he couldn’t tour in support of it. And with 25th anniversary releases for “Trouble Is …” planned, that likely will push the new music to 2023.

Shepherd can be heard adding his guitar wizardry to a cover of the Eurythmics’ “Missionary Man” recorded by Ann Wilson of Heart and released last month in advance of her upcoming album.

“My music attorney is also her music attorney, but he has a creative mind and loves to think of artists who would work well together,” Shepherd said. “Ann is one of my all-time favorite vocalists, especially when it comes to rock music. It was an honor and a privilege to do it.”

And unlike many collaborations these days, where a musician records his or her part in a home studio and sends out a digital file electronically, Shepherd said they did it old school, working together in a Nashville recording studio.

Shepherd has worked with many rock and blues legends in his career, but he didn’t hesitate in naming Stephen Stills, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who is his bandmate in The Rides, as the collaborator who’s had the biggest impact on him.

“We’ve done two records together and three tours together,” Shepherd said. “Writing songs with him, I learned a tremendous amount. He’s one of the greatest songwriters in history. Also recording and touring, he pushed me to sing more and more. He was adamant in that band we were going to share lead vocals 50 / 50 … He really helped me step up my game vocally.”

Noah Hunt joined Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s band as lead singer shortly before the “Trouble Is …” recording sessions started, and they’ve been performing together ever since, even as Shepherd has taken over some of the lead vocals.

“He’s the brother I never had, and I’m the brother he never had. We both had two sisters. When he joined the band, we were looking for a lead singer and not expecting to have to do that. Within two weeks we found him. God puts the right people in your path at the right time.

“It’s a family-type relationship and a business relationship musically. He sang all the lead vocals in the band, but over the years I started singing lead vocals as well. He sings half and I sing half. We have different voices, so we have more tools at our disposal, and he plays guitar and backs me up when I’m singing lead.”

Review: Kenny Wayne Shepherd ‘Trouble Is…25’

Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Trouble Is...25, album cover

Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Trouble Is…25

By Mike O’Cull

Five-time-Grammy-nominee and blues guitar hero Kenny Wayne Shepherd revisits and reinterprets the album that made him a star with the release of Trouble Is…25 .

The record breaks out December 2nd, 2022 via Provogue Records/Mascot Label Group and is a top-to-bottom retelling of Shepherd’s 1997 second effort Trouble Is… done to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original album. The complete re-record of Shepherd’s most successful album is accompanied by a documentary about the making of the original Trouble Is… and a live DVD captured at The Strand Theatre in Shepherd’s hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana. The record also includes a bonus track: an unreleased version of “Ballad of a Thin Man.” The whole set is a tribute to the process of creation and to Shepherd’s life journey from young prodigy to an acknowledged master of his art.

“One of the coolest things about re-recording Trouble Is… has been finding out – or verifying – how timeless this album really is,” says Shepherd, who is also leading an anniversary tour across the USA in 2022 and 2023, performing the album in its entirety. “I’m so proud of what we accomplished, and also the fact I was just 18 years old when I did it. I mean, I had an experience with this album that most musicians can only dream about. Trouble Is… sold millions of copies. There’s validation in all of that for me.”

Shepherd has been achieving validation since he first broke out of the Louisiana blues scene with his 1995 debut effort Ledbetter Heights. His second album, Trouble Is… made him a heavyweight contender while still in his teens. His father, a famous Louisiana radio personality and promoter by the name of Ken Shepherd, spun classic blues in the home and first lit the blue flames that still burn brightly in Kenny today.

In the quarter century that’s elapsed since those early days of glory, Shepherd has dropped another seven acclaimed solo albums, two with his all-star side-project The Rides alongside Stephen Stills and Barry Goldberg, and has been acknowledged by fans and peers as a Strat master. His guitar skills and songwriting prowess have made him one of the biggest stars in American music. He’s a generational talent who is still evolving with every gig and release.

Kenny tracked the first Trouble Is… with an all-star crew that included the hallowed Double Trouble lineup of drummer Chris Layton, bassist Tommy Shannon and keyboardist Reese Wynans plus lead singer Noah Hunt and co-producer Jerry Harrison. It all happened at the famed Record Plant studio in Sausalito, California. For this project, Shepherd used as much of the same group of people and places as he could. The Record Plant has long since shut down and Tommy Shannon has retired so these sessions were done at The Village in Los Angeles and Nashville’s Ocean Way with Shepherd’s regular bassist Kevin McCormick holding down the low frequencies.

Other artists have attempted to recapture their youthful lightning in a bottle by recording new versions of old material and most have fallen flat. Shepherd succeeds by focusing more on the vibe and spirit of the original album than trying to make a surgically-precise replica. From the opening cut “Slow Ride” forward, it’s clear that the chemistry shared by Kenny and his friends is not only still there but has gotten deeper. It’s also clear that we are listening to today’s Kenny Wayne Shepherd playing honestly as the man he’s grown to be. “Slow Ride” absolutely wails and shakes with Kenny delivering fierce lines and tones from the jump.

“Blue On Black” remains a mid-tempo rock gem, full of sweet acoustic and spicy electric guitars. Noah Hunt does fine work with the emotive lyrics while tremolo guitars pulse beneath his voice. This one is truly eternal and hits just as hard as it did the first time around. Shepherd’s stinging lead tone cuts right through the mix, adding intensity to the song’s atmospheric feel.

Watch The New Video “Blue On Black”

Jimi Hendrix’s “I Don’t Live Today” is just as precocious as it was a quarter-century ago and Shepherd conjures up Jimi’s soul and energy with astounding ease. He and the band explode with the ragged-edge greatness and unpredictability that Hendrix personified. It gets wild, threatens to crash, but instead achieves a sublime energy that can only come from old souls.

The two films included in the Trouble Is…25 package are beyond cool and will send even casual KWS fans over the moon. The documentary Trouble Is…25 The Film is one of the best music movies to come along in a while and lets Shepherd tell his story in his own words and those of several important figures in his life. We hear from his father, Chris “Whipper” Layton (SRV), his tour manager of 19 years Kristin Forbes, vocalist Noah Hunt, drummer Sam Bryant, and others who have been part of Shepherd’s career. The vintage photos from the early days are treasures and the performance clips are ample evidence of Kenny’s greatness.

The live video of the Trouble Is…25 anniversary concert is all you’d expect it to be and more. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a powerful performer and bandleader who has fully realized the potential of the talented teen he was when we met him. His tone and playing are both commanding and you can feel how far he’s come in every note. Noah Hunt shows off his mighty lead vocals and Chris Layton drives the whole band from the drum kit. It’s a triumphant show that celebrates a life and career well-lived.

Every bit of Trouble Is…25 will make your ears happy. Hearing Shepherd come at the songs that made his bones and brought him to the world a second time is extraordinary. You can feel his mileage in every note and the confidence it gives him. Highly recommended.

Eagles' 53-man roster projection after 2024 NFL draft: Philly's secondary looks way too dangerous

The Philadelphia Eagles  went into the 2024 NFL draft on a mission to beef up their secondary and they succeeded

With a total of nine NFL draft picks and six UDFA signings so far, the Eagles are over their 90-man roster limit, which means moves will be made.

Until then, let's take a look at the current state of the Eagles' roster and where things are likely to go from here.

Note: Players with single asterisk (*) are 2024 draft picks and players with double asterisks (**) are 2024 undrafted free agents.

Quarterback (3)

IN: Jalen Hurts,  Kenny Pickett , Tanner McKee

OUT : Will Grier

The Skinny :  Hurts is the starting quarterback of this football team. The Eagles didn't make a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers  for former first-round pick QB Kenny Pickett just to store him away. He'll backup Hurts while McKee continues his job as emergency QB.

Running Back (4)

IN: Saquon Barkley, Kenneth Gainwell, Will Shipley*, Kendall Milton**

OUT:  Lew Nichols, Tyrion Davis-Price

The Skinny:  With the amount of money Barkley is being paid, he will carry a majority of the workload. But Gainwell and Shipley will be there to back him up. Meanwhile, big and strong Milton has what it takes to pass Nichols and Davis-Price on the roster.

Wide receiver (6)

IN: A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, DeVonte Parker , Parris Campbell, Ainias Smith*, Johnny Wilson*

OUT:  Justin Watkins Jr., Jacob Harris, Shaquan Davis, Joseph Ngata, Griffin Herbert, Talik Keaton**

The Skinny:  Brown and Smith are obvious locks. Campbell, Parker, and Smith will compete for that third wide receiver spot. Meanwhile, Wilson makes the team because he's enormous and fast, and can block.

Tight end (4)

IN: Dallas Goedert, C.J. Uzomah , Albert Okwuegbunam, Grant Calcaterra

OUT:  Noah Togiai, McCallan Castles**

The Skinny:  Uzomah provides more veteran presence and the Eagles already seem confident in Okwuegbunam since they signed him before free agency and gave him some guaranteed money.

Offensive line (9)

IN: Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, Lane Johnson, Mecki Becton, Matt Hennessey , Trevor Keegan*, Fred Johnson

OUT: Dylan McMahon*, Brett Toth, Lecitus Smith, Darian Kinnard, Le'Raven Clark , Gottlieb Ayedze**, Anim Dankwah**

The Skinny: Becton is the Eagles' new swing tackle while Keegan slides into a backup right guard role. McMahon has a lot of upside to him but not everyone can make the roster, especially one with an already solidified offensive line.

Edge (5)

IN:  Bryce Huff, Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, Nolan Smith, Zach Baun

OUT:  Terrell Lewis, Tarron Jackson, Jalyx Hunt*, Patrick Johnson, Julian Okwara

The Skinny: The Eagles invested in sack monster Huff this offseason and are giving Graham his farewell tour, which is going to make it tougher for Hunt to make the initial roster.

Defensive Tackle (5)

IN:  Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Milton Williams, Moro Ojomo, Marlon Tuipulotu

OUT:  P.J. Mustipher, Thomas Booker, Noah Ellis

The Skinny: This position was the least of the Eagles' worries later year so no much will change, except for the fact that we'll see Carter take a huge leap.

Linebacker (4)

IN:  Devin White, Nakobe Dean, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Oren Burks

OUT:  Brandon Smith, Ben VanSumeren

Cornerback (6)

IN:  Darius Slay, Quinyon Michell*, Avonte Maddox, Kelee Ringo, Cooper DeJean*, Isaiah Rodgers

OUT: Brandon Smith, Ben VanSumeren, James Bradberry,

IN:  Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, Tristin McCollum,

OUT:  Andre' Sam**, Mekhi Garnder

Specialists (3)

IN: Jake Elliott, Braden Mann, Rick Lovato

OUT: Britain Covey

For the second time in three seasons, zero HBCU football players were selected in the NFL draft. Only one HBCU player — Jackson State cornerback Isaiah Bolden in 2023 — has been drafted in the last three years.

Eagles 2024 NFL Draft takeaways: Defensive needs addressed, RG remains question mark

Apr 25, 2024; Detroit, MI, USA; Toledo Rockets cornerback Quinyon Mitchell reacts after being selected by the Philadelphia Eagles as the No. 22 pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft at Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Eagles wrapped up the NFL Draft Saturday night, completing the player acquisition phase of an offseason in which a team that experienced one of the league’s most sudden and disastrous collapses wanted to reclaim its rugged mentality.

Two factors from the draft suggest the plan has been successful. First, one of the most bizarre opening nights in history helped the Eagles secure two players they’d given first-round grades. General manager Howie Roseman also uses the term “red star” players, which signifies prospects who received nearly unanimous “A” grades in terms of football character. The Eagles acquired five of them.

Philadelphia fulfilled this immediate goal while also adding future draft assets. Roseman executed eight trades that in part netted a third-, fourth- and fifth-round selection in next year’s draft. The Eagles had entered the weekend with only six 2025 picks, none in the fourth round. A team that considers the short term, midrange and long term in its decisions stuck to its core principles.

All told, the Eagles addressed their precarious secondary with their premier picks, added depth at edge rusher, running back, wide receiver and linebacker during the middle rounds, then capped off the draft with two late-round selections who will compete for the team’s vacancy at right guard.

Eagles NFL Draft picks 2024: Grades, fits and scouting reports

Best value pick

It’s still somewhat absurd that Quinyon Mitchell fell to the Eagles at No. 22. He was the No. 11 overall player on The Athletic draft expert Dane Brugler’s big board , which underlines the rare scenario that benefited the Eagles thanks to a quarterback-heavy draft in which no defensive players were selected until No. 15 (for the first time ever).

The Eagles snagged the draft’s top cornerback without having to surrender any draft capital to trade up. That allowed Roseman to instead use his full allotment of selections in eight other draft-day deals for immediate acquisitions and future picks. Not bad at all.

Mitchell, who turns 23 in July, is a two-time All-American who could very well start in 2024. He’s got an enviable frame (6 feet, 195 pounds), undeniable speed (4.33 40-yard dash) and proved that coverage skills that yielded six interceptions and two pick-sixes in a zone-heavy scheme also translate to press-man by locking down top pass catchers at the Senior Bowl.

The Eagles, who typically draft players who played in Power 5 conferences, aren’t concerned about Mitchell’s pedigree. Neither was former Alabama coach Nick Saban. He said on the broadcast that Mitchell would’ve been Alabama’s No. 1 target in the transfer portal, “and he would never get in the portal.” For the Eagles, Mitchell playing in the MAC was also a strength. Said Roseman, “We wanted to bring in people here who had a chip on their shoulder.”

NFL Draft 2024 winners and losers: Eagles, Steelers stand out; why did Raiders pass on QB?

Most surprising pick

The Eagles selected another cornerback immediately after picking Mitchell. But Iowa’s Cooper DeJean is an intriguing anomaly. To say he’s a cornerback ignores his versatility as a potential safety. To say he’s a versatile defensive back downplays his proficiency as an outside corner.

The Eagles needed to improve a secondary that surrendered the second-most passing yards in 2023. And drafting Mitchell alone wasn’t going to fulfill depth at safety and add insurance to a cornerback room led by two aging starters. DeJean, one of the best tackling defensive backs in the draft, per Brugler, held a first-round grade, Roseman said, and the Eagles considered taking him in the first.

So, from a value standpoint, with DeJean falling to No. 40 overall, it’s sensible that Roseman positioned the Eagles to acquire the Iowa standout by swapping picks 50, 53 and 161 with the Washington Commanders for Nos. 40, 78 and 152.

There’s no certainty yet where DeJean will play. He could fulfill several roles for the Eagles, including cornerback. Safeties Reed Blankenship (groin), C.J. Gardner-Johnson (pectoral) and Sydney Brown (ACL) all suffered season-ending injuries in 2023. Cornerback Darius Slay missed five games with a knee injury. There’s also no clarity at the nickel spot. Avonte Maddox , 28, re-signed on a one-year deal, but he struggled after missing 13 games with a torn pectoral.

Coach Nick Sirianni also hinted that DeJean could be weaponized within the NFL’s new kickoff rules . The league is attempting to incentivize more returns on special teams, and DeJean totaled 406 yards on 31 career punt returns at Iowa, including a 70-yard touchdown against Michigan State. It’s going to be fascinating to see how the Eagles deploy DeJean.

Cooper DeJean joins Quinyon Mitchell as new Eagles DBs hoping to shore up secondary

Biggest question mark

Why did the Eagles not invest more heavily in an interior offensive lineman? Are they that confident in Tyler Steen ? Do they think a competition pool that includes Steen, Matt Hennessy , a fifth-round pick (Michigan’s Trevor Keegan ) and a sixth-round pick (NC State’s Dylan McMahon ) will produce a right guard who won’t become a liability?

Interior defensive pressure is a considerable threat. The Eagles may have gotten a sneak peek of a potential problem during the 2023 season. Steen, in his only start as a rookie, surrendered six pressures while filling in for Cam Jurgens against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9, according to Pro Football Focus. The Eagles won 28-23, but Jalen Hurts was sacked three times and a limited rushing attack averaged 3.3 yards per carry.

The easy answer: Yes, Roseman said the Eagles are “excited” about Steen. Roseman also often said the Eagles “stuck to our board” and drafted the best available prospects. Since the Eagles used pick Nos. 50 and 53 to trade up for DeJean, then traded back twice from No. 78 — eventually to 94 (and selected an edge rusher) — it can be inferred that they simply had lower grades on the interior linemen other teams drafted in that range.

The class is classing 🤌 @Novacare | #FlyEaglesFly pic.twitter.com/eNcsq2IVCk — Philadelphia Eagles (@Eagles) April 28, 2024

Perhaps if Washington’s Troy Fautanu (No. 20 overall, Pittsburgh Steelers ) fell to the Eagles and not Mitchell, I’d instead be writing, “Why did the Eagles not invest more heavily in a cornerback?” But I still find the Eagles drafting a running back at No. 127 at the very least questionable. They made Saquon Barkley the highest-paid running back in team history  because  he’s an every-down player. And if Kenneth Gainwell remains in the offense’s plans, it’s worth wondering how much Will Shipley will see the field in 2024 (if at all).

Gainwell’s contract expires after this season. So, there is a future need for depth. Shipley began an eight-pick sequence in which five running backs were selected. That indicates the Eagles acted on a market trend before it occurred. But there’s an immediate  need for a right guard. Was there  really  no one the Eagles liked until the fifth round?

Remaining needs

Since we already discussed the right guard vacancy … the Eagles could use more bodies at defensive tackle. Jalen Carter should continue his ascent after finishing second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, but Jordan Davis acknowledged he needs to prove he can be more consistent in 2024.

Both former first-round picks are expected to help the Eagles smoothly transition into an era without franchise pillar Fletcher Cox . But defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will still rotate his defensive tackles frequently, and a depth rotation that currently includes Milton Williams , Marlon Tuipulotu , Moro Ojomo , PJ Mustipher and Noah Elliss could use at least one more reliable veteran.

This is the first draft since 2020 that the Eagles didn’t select a defensive tackle. Of course, that partly indicates the ones they picked in the three previous cycles have panned out. But Roseman fundamentally believes in a roster whose foundation is in the trenches, and it would do the Eagles well to search for more defensive tackles before entering training camp.

Post-draft outlook

Philadelphia’s draft looks productive in terms of restoring the defense to a respectable form. It brought in Mitchell and DeJean, who should be able to contribute immediately, while acquiring longer-term projects such as Jalyx Hunt and Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who could yield some future dividends when given time to develop.

The offense’s needs were more schematic this offseason. The Eagles were aggressive in free agency and locked up their talented young core by signing A.J. Brown , DeVonta Smith , Landon Dickerson and Jordan Mailata to lucrative contract extensions. The players they added in the draft must only become supportive cogs in a machine that already looks like The Terminator.

Now it’s about how this team comes together under an overhauled coaching staff.
