Full day wine tour

Full day wine tour

  • Duration: 8 Hours (approx.)
  • Location : Penola
  • Product code: FDWT

Welcome to the Coonawarra Discovery Full Day Tour. This 7 hour tour allows you great flexibility while ensuring you still get the best Coonawarra cellar door experience. There are multiple options for every stop and our experienced guides can steer you in the right direction when local events make certain places even more essential. We will show you the highlights of the Coonawarra wine region in an day filled with sensory adventures. Your guides have grown up in the area and have developed personal relationships with the people behind the counters.

Guests don’t get to Coonawarra as often as other wine regions due to it’s isolation so don't miss  the opportunity to experience what it has to offer by having to worry about driving. If you are not sure about wine styles or brands, go with our default selection which is finely tuned to succeed for most palates and knowledge levels.

An example of your full day tour:

At 10 minutes to 10am we arrive at your accommodation in Penola or Coonawarra. (Mt Gambier, Millicent, Robe, Beachport or Naracoorte pickups and drop offs available by arrangement). You climb in to the nice new Hyundai iMax and its off to our first winery – the impressive Parker Estate. Enjoy the architecture and the spaces, the cheese and nibbles and most importantly, the wine. See an 18 litre melchior and admire the current art collection – it is always changing.

After you are satiated at Yalumba Menzies, your guide takes you to Highbank, a boutique winery on only 4 hectares of vines but with some beautiful views and supurb hand-built buildings that are available for bookings should you require.

After a comfortable chat with Denis Vice of Highbank, you are delivered at 12.15pm to Wynns, the pillar of Coonawarra winemaking and really a “must-see”. You can check out the wonderfully gnarled old vines – the oldest in the region, the fascinating museum displays or just head straight to the wine tasting on offer.  You may also enjoy an optional cheese platter. After the morning’s activities you may be feeling a bit peckish and so you are now presented with your lunch options – great pizzas at Fodder, a 2 course set menu at Chardonnay Lodge, a 3 course set menu feast at Upstairs at Hollicks or a generous cheese and meat platter in Eric Brand’s Private cellar. On this occassion you choose the latter!

All of your lunch venue options also provide wine tastings if you wish to combine your visit.

After lunch you are driven up to the north of Coonawarra to view the magnificent Rymills winery and try their range of award-winning wines, and then its time to try a chocolate and wine pairing at Penley Estate, one of our favourites.

Now it is time for one of Penola’s younger heros – Majella, and if you have kept to the schedule (no problems if not) we land at our final destination – the tranquil Balnaves besides the lake. (If you chose Blok Estate instead, you may get scones now).

It is now 5.00pm and you are totally ready to return to your cottage (also arranged by us for you) – which we immediately do. All you have left to do today is write us a five-star review and get ready for diinner in one of Penola’s great restaurants – or even a trip to Millicent to try the famous Mayura Station Wagyu. We can arrange transport whatever your choice is, and you will always be in safe hands!

She was friendly and knowledgeable and clearly knew her stuff. We visited 4 very different cellar doors, the first providing a delicious food platter with the tasting. The day was unrushed and we had plenty of time at each venue to taste, ask questions and purchase. A great day and a great tour all round. Highly recommend. Read more Written 1 April 2024

  • TJ S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A Great Experience in the Coonawarra Coonawarra Experiences was a great find. Our first experience was on their website when Simon assured us he was a "real person" (not a robot) . He suggested a half day tour and was happy to tailor the afternoon to suit our preferences and include wineries we were specifically interested in. Our friend is a coeliac and Simon understood the importance of making sure there were gluten free options for our lunch. We visited 4 wineries and had a delicious grazing platter lunch at the first place, Patrick of Coonawarra. I think you get a better experience visiting these places with someone who knows the wine makers. Simon was a wonderful tour guide, full of interesting facts and fun stories. Additionally, when the property we were booked to stay in cancelled us at the last minute, Simon was very helpful in suggesting alternatives and made some enquiries on our behalf. We were very grateful as we discovered the weekend we had chosen to visit was full of petanque teams for the Coonawarra Classic and accommodation was hard to find. This really was a great experience. Stayed in their apartment, which was really comfortable and had everything we needed. We did the full day wine and lunch tour with Simon, who was a lovely friendly host with good sense of humour. Loved the experience of all 4 wineries, the lovely drive around and the history and banter on our way around. Simon knows all about everywhere and obviously knows and is well respected by all winery staff. It makes for a more personal experience. Had an excellent lunch in a boring place, with no atmosphere, but would still highly recommend the whole thing. Lunch at a winery would be more fun… Did buy quite a bit of wine🍷 Read more Written 1 February 2024

Our tour was a private tour in a modern comfortable van. Booking and planning was easy with Simon being very responsive to all of our requests. Our tour was over 2 days with the days tour being hosted by Kerry on the first day Simon on the second. Both were friendly and knowledgeable. It’s obvious that Simon and Kerry are liked and respected by the wineries and restaurants ensuring that as tour guests we were given 5 star treatment throughout. We were unable to stay in their accommodation on the first night but Simon arranged for nearby accommodation and then transferred us to their appartments. 6 Coonawarra Wineries That Will Tickle Your Fancy

Coonawarra is smack bang in the middle between Melbourne and Adelaide. The region is one of many from the Limestone Coast Wine Zone in South Australia ; giving Coonawarra wineries an intricate maritime influence that cascades personality and flavour. There are 36 Coonawarra wineries, but Wine Regions Australia has compiled a list of ‘6 Wineries in Coonawarra That Will Tickle Your Fancy’. If you’re travelling to the region, you’ll want to know all about the Coonawarra Wine Trail, and the best Coonawarra wine tours and tastings. There’s no point visiting a region known for its exquisite wine without trying AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE – which is why wine tours come with a designated driver… Let’s look at the top wineries in Coonawarra, but first a few facts and ‘need to knows’ about the region.

The Coonawarra Wine Regio n

The Coonawarra Wine Region is a symbol of quality. Known for the rich, rusty Terra Rossa soils supported by the ever famous limestone foundations; Coonawarra is a pinnacle for viticulture. The limestone retains water well throughout the dry season, keeping the grapes moist. The red soils hold rich minerals and nutrients that shine through the tannins and complexities in the Coonawarra wines; it’s one of the reasons the Cab Sav is so famous.

Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the market taking up 53 % of the total distribution. The quality and complexities of the Cab Sav grapes also come from the lengthened ripening period due to the ocean winds that blow from the south. The Maritime winds keep the grapes cool, prolonging their vine life and allowing them time to soak up the abundance of nutrients that the Terra Rossa soil holds.

With over 120 years of grape growing experience, winemakers carefully nurture the ancient Terra Rossa soils and spend their time patiently ageing their impeccable wines in their historic cellars. Through their commitment and hard-work, high-quality without compromise, being passed down through generations, has helped shaped Coonawarra into the famous region that it is today.

How to get there

Coonawarra is an easy four and a half-hour drive from Melbourne and a four-hour drive from Adelaide. For those with more time on their hands, we suggest taking the scenic route via the world-renowned Great Ocean Road when travelling from Melbourne. By Bus and Train:

Make your way to Coonawarra using bus service, Premier Stateliner. There is a daily service to Penola/Coonawarra via Premier Stateliner Services from Adelaide.

Catch the train from Melbourne to Warrnambool, and then you will be taken by bus through Port Fairy and Portland on to Mt Gambier via the V/Line.

Coonawarra Wine Tours

The best way to navigate the stunning region is by wine tour. You can tick a few more wineries off your list if someone else has to drive! Personally, we don’t see the point of holidaying through a wine region and having to use a spittoon, swallow the darn wine and jump on a Coonawarra wine tour.

Wayne was known as one of Australia’s longest-serving winemakers before he passed in 2017. Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail.

With Cellar Door experiences only a stones-throw from each other, you can easily cruise between each winery, or if you feel like stretching your legs, take a stroll or ride through the vines on the Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail.

Along the trail, you’ll experience working vineyards, which can be a hive of activity year-round, seven days a week, as well as direct access to 6 cellar doors including Redman Wines , Brand’s Laira Coonawarra , Ottelia , Wynns Coonawarra Estate , DiGiorgio Family Wines and Zema Estate .

Pick away at a produce platter or settle in for a long lunch at Ottelia in the Coonawarra Township, or Upstairs at Hollick and take in the views over the vines. Settle in for the night at one of the many idyllic B&Bs or glamp in a luxurious Bell Tent surrounded by 500+ year old red gums.

Coonawarra Railway Siding.

Arguably one of the most recognisable landmarks in the wine world, the Coonawarra Railway Siding has become one of the most photographed sites in South Australia!

Located on the outskirts of the Coonawarra township, no trip to Coonawarra is complete without a happy snap at the iconic landmark.

The railway platform, or Siding as it is known, played a significant role during Coonawarra's early settlement.

The railway track was built by John Riddoch in 1898, allowing Coonawarra's premium fruits and wines to be transported around the nation and across the seas to Europe and beyond.

The rusty old tracks are no longer in use, but there is hope that this currently unused rail line could be converted to a bicycle track along the winery route taking in the stunning viticultural scenery along the way - watch this space! In the meantime, come and visit this historical landmark that was the catalyst for the Coonawarra region to flourish as a great farming and wine district.

Are you open Easter Sunday?

Having found an Easter trading hours guide on the Coonawarra region website, it’s mentioned that Wynns Coonawarra is open from 10am-5pm on Easter Sunday, and is in fact open every day over the Easter period.

Looking at most of the other wineries too, they are unaffected on Easter Sunday – it’s only Good Friday where more than half of the cellar doors are closed.

Have a great day! Michael

FOOD & WINE

Nature’s food bowl.

Whether you prefer paddock to plate, pot to plate, foraged or fermented, nature’s food bowl is overflowing with fruits from the sea and land, with extraordinary flavours waiting to be unearthed. Few regions offer such gastronomic diversity as Greater Mount Gambier. The list of fresh Limestone Coast ingredients is limited only by the seasons, but the passion that goes into producing clean, green local produce is guaranteed year-round.

Generations of fishermen have been sustainably harvesting succulent seafood from the cold waters of the Southern Ocean, with the rocky underwater limestone ledges home to highly-prized lobster and abalone. Fertile, volcanic-rich soils are the very foundations of enthusiastic farming communities raising beef, lamb, pork, poultry and an abundance of fruit and vegetables in a moderate, well-watered climate. The pride that goes into premium wine and dairy products has also helped to put the region on the world’s gourmet stage, with the growing export market a testament to the quality.

Markets and Stalls – Gather the finest local ingredients for your own uniquely regional feast by drifting between gastronomic pit-stops – just-picked potatoes, garlic, onions, organic apples, seasonal berries and native bush foods ignite the tastebuds with their authentic flavours, while the free-range eggs laid by footloose and fancy chooks are also strong crowd pleasers.

The region is home to several award-winning coffee roasters, boutique cheesemakers, olive oil producers, herb growers, artisan bread makers and even a toffee maker.

You can buy direct from the producers at authentic weekend farmer’s markets held at various locations including Mount Gambier’s Cave Garden/Thugi. You’ll also find unforgettable food experiences at farm gate stalls, cellar doors, and gourmet grocers.

The city and its surrounding towns are filled with great places to indulge your culinary senses, with talented chefs creating exceptional dishes at local restaurants, cafes and chic bars.

Committed foodies can also try foraging in the wild for mushrooms, edible bush foods and coastal plants – it would pay to join one of several guided chef’s tours to ensure that your harvest is as appetising as it looks.

Come to Mount Gambier with grape expectations, you won’t be disappointed!

We boast six award-winning wine regions  within a short drive of the city feature a vibrant blend of prominent Australian wine companies and boutique family-owned businesses. Each has evolved from a magical mix of pure limestone-filtered water, rich volcanic free-draining soils, mild growing conditions and earthy passion. Premium quality is guaranteed.

coonawarra wine tours from mt gambier

The Coonawarra wine region is one of Australia’s most internationally recognised wine regions and is frequently referred to as Australia’s ‘other red centre’. It is a short 40-minute drive north of Mount Gambier and offers the largest selection of cellar doors. While cabernet sauvignon with considerable ageability is the signature drop, much-lauded shiraz, chardonnay and riesling have made Coonawarra one of the New World’s greatest appellations.

With its precious strip of rich terra rossa soil, locals call this celebrated ridge of earth ‘nature’s gift to wine lovers across the globe’, and new generations of old winemaking families work alongside an influx of fresh talent to bring Coonawarra’s inherent qualities to the fore every single vintage.

Wrattonbully

Further north along the Riddoch Highway, the Wrattonbully wine region is nestled among the rich rolling hills of South Australia’s Naracoorte Ranges.

The unique characteristics of Wrattonbully fruit are gaining worldwide attention as the region toasts a growing list of trophies, medals and international accolades.

The World Heritage-Listed Naracoorte Caves are close by, and new limestone caves containing significant ancient fossils and prehistoric remains were discovered during vineyard development.

Herbert Vineyard

Mount Gambier

The Mount Gambier wine region is one of the nation’s newest wine zones, and it’s rapidly gaining a name for its pinot noir and white varieties. Cellar doors are understated with a strong personal touch; it’s highly likely that the grower will be the one greeting you upon arrival.

Grape Vines

Neighbouring Padthaway  wine region established its reputation with chardonnay, shiraz and cabernet but has branched out considerably in order to keep abreast of consumer trends. Mount Benson’s distinctly delicate, cool-climate, maritime-influenced wines are also making waves with their strong sense of place and style, while the Henty region just across the Victorian border has wonderful aromatic whites, sweet dessert wines and intense, finely structured reds.
