What's new for 2024.

The CX-90 is a new nameplate for the Mazda brand that replaces the CX-9 for the 2024 model year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 starts at $39,220 and goes up to $57,325 depending on the trim and options.

We're most enamored by the new inline-six in its top S tune which pumps out 340 horsepower. The S model also comes well equipped with niceties such as second-row captain's chairs, a 12-speaker Bose stereo system, interior ambient lighting, 21-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a hands-free power liftgate, and more.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The CX-90 is the first Mazda to use a new turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine that is augmented by a 48-volt hybrid system. Mazda says the powertrain is good for 280 horsepower in non-S trims and 340 in S trims. An inline-six-cylinder engine is a hallmark of SUVs such as the BMW X5 and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport , signaling Mazda's desire to move its brand even more toward the premium end of the market. A plug-in-hybrid variant is also offered, using the same 323-hp setup used in the European-market CX-60 SUV, but we review that model separately. All models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission and, much like the rest of the Mazda SUV lineup, the CX-90 has all-wheel drive standard. During our initial test drive, we sampled the top-spec S model, which offered plenty of power for city and highway driving. The 340-hp inline-six is particularly smooth, but we weren't satisfied with the lagginess of the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and found it best to let the eight-speed automatic shift for itself. At our test track, the CX-90 with the inline-six hit 60 mph in 6.3 seconds but exhibited some unrefined sounds that didn't match the engine's otherwise smooth-running nature. Nonetheless, it delivered refined road manners with the athleticism Mazdas are known for. We have signed up a CX-90 Turbo S for long-term duty , and intend to find out how it holds up to 40,000 miles of road trips, grocery runs, school field trips, and home improvement errands.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA has rated the CX-90 for up to 24 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, the CX-90 managed a 29-mpg result. For more information about the CX-90's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

To accompany its upscale exterior, Mazda has endowed the CX-90 with a stylish cabin design that features room for up to eight passengers. Opt for the second-row captain's chairs and the total seating drops to seven. The fabric dashboard upholstery in the high-end models looks striking, and the seats in those trims are also wrapped in soft nappa leather. Base Select trims are less plush but no less handsomely styled. Although leather is standard starting on the Preferred trim, the more upscale and buttery-looking nappa leather upholstery is reserved for Premium Plus trims.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A 10.3- or larger 12.3-inch infotainment display is nestled into the dashboard and controlled via a click wheel on the CX-90's center console. Mazda's latest infotainment interface is easy to navigate and relatively intuitive. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard, and we expect that there will be wireless connectivity for both. The CX-90 lower trims feature a 7.0-inch digital gauge display and an eight-speaker stereo system. A larger 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is optional, as is a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

All CX-90s come with a suite of driver-assistance features called i-Activsense which includes automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and more. For more information about the CX-90's crash test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

 • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
 • Standard blind-spot monitoring
 • Standard adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mazda offers an adequate protection plan for buyers of new CX-90s. What it doesn't offer is something that both the Hyundai Palisade and the Toyota Highlander do: complimentary scheduled maintenance.

 • Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
 • Powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
 • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

2024 Mazda CX-90 Review

mazda cx90 tour

 • Strong overall performance
 • Powerful yet fuel-efficient engines
 • Comfortable ride quality and seats
 • Refined luxury-leaning interior
 • Below-average cargo capacity
 • Limited passenger space
 • Modest personal-item storage
 • Expensive for a non-luxury SUV

What's new

 • All-new midsize three-row SUV, replacing the CX-9
 • Kicks off the first CX-90 generation for 2024

When the Mazda CX-9 was last redesigned in 2016, it became one of our favorite three-row midsize SUVs. As the years went on, however, its lack of interior and cargo room became more of a liability as fresher and roomier rivals such as the Kia Telluride and Volkswagen Atlas debuted. But now Mazda is back once again vying for a top spot with the all-new 2024 CX-90.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2024 Mazda CX-90 3.3 Turbo Select 4dr SUV AWD (3.3L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

The CX-90 is similar in size to the CX-9 it replaces as Mazda's flagship, though its wheelbase (the distance between front and rear wheels) grows by 7.5 inches, benefitting passenger and cargo space. The CX-9 was notable for delivering a more luxurious interior than its contemporaries, and the CX-90 builds on that refinement by delivering an experience that rivals entry-level luxury SUVs. Acceleration is strong and smooth thanks to a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine. All-wheel drive is standard, and Mazda even offers a plug-in hybrid version that delivers an estimated 26 miles of all-electric range on a single charge.

Overall, we're impressed with the CX-90 and think it's a desirable choice for a three-row SUV. Besides the Telluride and Atlas, other alternatives include Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade and Toyota Highlander. Check out our test team's Expert Rating below to get our full report on where the CX-90 shines and where it comes up a little short.

Edmunds Expert Rating

Performance, fuel economy, which cx-90 does edmunds recommend, mazda cx-90 models.

The CX-90 PHEV employs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a plug-in hybrid system with a single electric motor that pulls power from a 17.8-kWh battery pack. Combined output is 323 hp and 369 lb-ft, and Mazda estimates you can travel up to 26 miles on a full charge. It also has an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. Charging the battery from zero to 100% when using a 240-volt power source takes about two hours and 20 minutes, Mazda says.

From there, Mazda pairs these powertrains with five trim levels: Select , Preferred , Preferred Plus , Premium and Premium Plus . There are some feature differences between some of the engine and trim levels.

3.3 Turbo Select This base model comes well equipped with a long list of standard features that include:

 • 19-inch alloy wheels
 • LED headlights
 • Power liftgate
 • Keyless entry and ignition
 • Tri-zone automatic climate control
 • Synthetic leather upholstery
 • Three third-row seats
 • 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen
 • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
 • Eight-speaker audio system

Standard driver assist features include:

 • Frontal collision mitigation (warns you of an impending collision and applies the brakes in certain scenarios)
 • Adaptive cruise control (adjusts speed to maintain a constant distance between the vehicle and the car in front)
 • Blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning (alerts you if a vehicle is in your blind spot during a lane change or while in reverse)
 • Lane keeping assistance (makes minor steering corrections to help keep the vehicle centered in its lane)
 • Driver attention monitor (issues an alert if sensors determine you are becoming fatigued)
 • Safe exit assist (can prevent a rear passenger from opening a door into traffic approaching from behind)
 • Rear seat reminder (alerts you to check the rear seat before exiting the vehicle)

3.3 Turbo Preferred Adds to the Select trim with:

 • Leather upholstery
 • Heated front seats
 • Power-adjustable front passenger seat
 • Second-row sunshades
 • Additional USB charge ports

3.3 Turbo Preferred Plus This midrange trim adds a handful of convenience upgrades such as:

 • Increased towing capacity
 • Wireless charging pad
 • Wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
 • Head-up display (displays important information in your sight line on the windshield)

3.3 Turbo Premium Dresses up the CX-90 with:

 • 21-inch wheels
 • Chrome exterior trim
 • Hands-free liftgate
 • Panoramic sunroof
 • Second-row captain's chairs (reducing seating capacity to seven)
 • Integrated navigation system
 • Driver's seat memory functions
 • 12-speaker Bose audio system
 • Active blind-spot assistance (automatically steers the CX-90 back into its lane if you try to change lanes while a car is in the vehicle's blind spot)
 • Front and rear parking sensors

3.3 Turbo Premium Plus Tops off the base engine's feature list by way of:

 • Power-folding and auto-dimming exterior mirrors
 • Windshield wiper de-icer
 • Premium leather upholstery
 • Digital instrument panel
 • 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen
 • Heated second-row seats
 • Heated steering wheel
 • Ventilated front seats
 • Front cross-traffic warning with automatic braking
 • Surround-view camera system (gives you a top-down view of the vehicle and its surroundings for tight parking situations)
 • Automatic reverse braking (applies the brakes automatically to avoid an imminent collision with an object behind the vehicle)

3.3 Turbo S The first model with the more powerful engine goes without a trim level name but is similar in content to the 3.3 Turbo Premium trim. Note that it also has a two-person third-row seat, reducing capacity to seven passengers.

Turbo S Premium Upgrading to this trim generally gets you the features from the 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus. It has the second-row captain's chairs for six-passenger capacity.

Turbo S Premium Plus This top trim is outfitted identically to the 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus trim but adds:

 • Quilted leather upholstery
 • Ventilated second-row seats

PHEV Preferred , Premium and Premium Plus The plug-in hybrid model's feature list is identical to the 3.3 Turbo trims but adds a digital instrument panel to all versions.

 • Add any vehicle to compare

Mazda CX-90 vs. Kia Telluride

The Telluride has been a class leader since it debuted back in 2020 and it doesn't look as though it will relinquish that crown anytime soon. It represents a better value than the CX-90 by offering more features for the money and Kia backs it with a generous warranty. The CX-90 is perhaps the most luxurious SUV in the class, but the Telluride isn't far off.

Mazda CX-90 vs. Volkswagen Atlas

The CX-90 and VW Atlas both offer a pleasing mix of comfort and easy-to-use controls. The CX-90 has a power advantage and it's more fuel-efficient and nicer inside the cabin. Going with the VW, though, gets you more cargo room and more spacious third-row seating. It's also less expensive.

Mazda CX-90 vs. Honda Pilot

The recently redesigned Honda Pilot makes waves with its TrailSport model that adds legitimate off-road capabilities, yet it keeps its position as a sensible choice for growing families. The Pilot benefits from several clever storage and usability solutions, including a removable second-row center seat that's unique in the class. The CX-90 distinguishes itself by being more fun to drive and luxurious inside.

2024 mazda cx-90 first impressions.

mazda cx90 tour

Mazda is set to unleash a host of new SUVs, and the first out of the gate is the Mazda CX-90 . The CX-90 has a more upscale and muscular look than Mazda's current flagship SUV, the CX-9. Both are three-row midsize crossover SUVs, but the CX-90 has roomier third-row seating as well as more cargo space. The CX-90 also gets completely new powertrain options, including a plug-in hybrid.

The CX-90, which can seat up to eight people, competes for your attention among other three-row SUVs such as the Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander and Volkswagen Atlas. Mazda's recent introduction of more sophisticated and premium interiors means the Acura MDX, Infiniti QX60 and even some of the lower trim levels of the Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5 are also in the CX-90's crosshairs.

Mazda is introducing three new powertrains for the CX-90, and all of them are hybrids. The first is a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder paired with a mild hybrid assist. This engine, which Mazda refers to as the 3.3 Turbo, produces 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft. There's also an upgraded version called the 3.3 Turbo S that cranks out 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque when using premium gasoline. Either way, the CX-90 is getting a huge power increase compared to the CX-9's maximum of 250 hp from its turbocharged four-cylinder. Mazda says this engine's mild hybrid system helps to improve smoothness during acceleration and provide a slight boost in fuel economy.

The other big news is the plug-in hybrid, which will be Mazda's first PHEV available in the U.S. A 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is paired to an electric motor, with the combo producing 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft (again, when using premium fuel). A 17.8-kWh battery pack juices the electric motor. Mazda isn't quoting an estimated EV-only range just yet but during our brief time behind the wheel, we covered nearly 25 miles over a mix of city and highway driving in the CX-90's full electric mode. Charging the battery from zero to 100% when using a 240-volt power source takes about two hours and 20 minutes, Mazda says.

Regardless of which powertrain you go with, the CX-90 comes with standard all-wheel drive. Mazda says the power split is biased toward the rear wheels to give the CX-90 a sportier, more balanced feel than its rivals that generally offer front-wheel-drive powertrains or front-biased AWD systems. Every CX-90 has an eight-speed automatic as standard as well. Towing capacity is competitive for the class; Mazda says the CX-90 with the six-cylinder engine can pull up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped, or 3,500 pounds with the PHEV powertrain.

It might sound like a cliché but the CX-90 drives like a Mazda. It feels taut and responsive but in a sophisticated manner that, despite other automakers' attempts, is unique to the brand. We had a chance to drive both the PHEV and the 3.3 Turbo S versions and both exhibit excellent body control without being overly stiff or needlessly busy. Bigger speed bumps and dips are dispatched with one fluid body motion, giving the CX-90 excellent highway stability. We felt the steering weight in both versions to be spot on in their Normal drive mode but a bit too heavy for our tastes when switched into Sport. But the steering is certainly accurate, allowing you to park it without having to make further adjustments, or just feel confident when driving on a twisty road.

Power numbers from the 3.3-liter Turbo S and the e-Skyactiv PHEV are pretty similar so it's no surprise that these engines also provide similar acceleration when you mash the gas pedal. It's not neck-snapping acceleration but the CX-90 easily gets up to freeway speeds with confidence. When not leaning on it, the PHEV's naturally aspirated four-cylinder does sound and feel like it's working a bit harder than the six-cylinder does. But it never feels underpowered, such is the power from the Mazda's electric motor. That motor, along with the 17.8-kWh battery pack, let the CX-90 cruise effortlessly at highway speeds. There's also plenty of pep around town to make the EV mode a usable option on a daily basis.

Also notable is how smooth the straight-six engine is. Competitors like the Kia Telluride and Honda Pilot both use V6 engines, and while they don't emit too much in the way of vibrations, they can both start to feel a bit coarse at higher rpm, something you'd experience when merging or passing at higher speeds.

The CX-90 is immediately comfortable. The size and shape of the seats, along with their adjustability, make them suitable for a wide range of body types. The driving position is very good, helping you feel in control but without being too aggressive — this is a midsize SUV after all. We only had a chance to sample the second-row captain's chairs, and not the bench seat setup, and found the chairs to be reasonably comfortable. They can be adjusted with both slide and recline functions and feel on par with other offerings in the class.

The third-row seats, though much more spacious than those in the CX-9, are still on the tight side. Adult-size passengers can fit without complaint, but the side panels where the cupholders are intrude quite a bit into the seating area. Headroom is acceptable in the third row, and while you can't climb into the seats as easily as you can in a Kia Telluride, it's not too much effort to get situated.

The CX-90 is also very quiet. Driving the PHEV version in EV mode is almost serene. Outside noise is nicely muted, and it's possible to have conversation with third-row passengers without having to raise your voice.

Just looking at the interior of the CX-90, you can tell Mazda has continued to raise the bar for a non-luxury brand. There's a pleasing combination of shapes and textures in the CX-90 with different surface treatments, such as wood, chrome and even a distinctive fabric available as dashboard and door trim. The spacious interior hasn't compromised the driver's seating position. From behind the compact steering wheel, the CX-90 looks and feels like a smaller SUV. The gauges are legible at a quick glance, and information and buttons pertinent to the driver are easily found. But the front passenger won't feel left out. The centrally mounted control knob for the infotainment system can be easily operated by either occupant and the high-mounted infotainment screen is visible by most passengers.

The climate control switchgear looks and feels good and we particularly like the temperature toggle switches — not only are they satisfying to move up and down, but it's also generally nice to have physical controls when so many manufacturers are moving toward touchscreen buttons. The fact that the new central screen is loaded with Mazda's newer infotainment system makes the tech offerings feel more competitive too.

The CX-90 comes with three different seating configurations depending on the trim level you select. It's capable of seating up to eight passengers, but Mazda also offers a seven-seat version (replacing the second-row bench with two captain's chairs) as well as a six-passenger setup with a two-seat third row. The second-row captain's chairs can be had with either a center console between them or in a walk-through configuration.

As you'd expect from a luxury-leaning three-row SUV, the CX-90 comes with a fair amount of standard tech on most trim levels. The infotainment screen is available in a 10.25-inch or a 12-inch display and comes with smartphone compatibility with either wired or wireless connectivity. There's also an available head-up display, wireless phone charger, native navigation and a 12-speaker Bose audio system, with an eight-speaker setup being the base system.

Mazda calls its suite of advanced driver aids i-Activsense and it includes blind-spot warning, driver attention alert, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, rear cross-traffic warning and automatic emergency braking. Depending on the trim level, other features can be added, such as front and rear parking sensors, lane centering and a nifty surround-view camera system with a see-through view to help you better understand where the corners of the CX-90 are when maneuvering in tight spots.

The CX-90 starts at $40,970 (including destination) for the Select Trim with the 3.3 Turbo engine and, at the top end, rings in at $61,325 for a Premium Plus trim with the 3.3 Turbo S engine. The CX-90 is pricey, but if Mazda can combine new luxuries, more potent powertrains and the CX-9's fun-to-drive spirit, it may prove a hard package to beat.

Overall, the CX-90 has impressed us with its functionality, more spacious third row, sophisticated interior design and some compelling options in the powertrain department. It seems Mazda has a good pulse on what worked and what didn't work from its previous CX-9 flagship and has attempted to make the right shifts to adjust. We'll see whether Mazda has stuck the landing when the CX-90 goes on sale this spring. Stay tuned to Edmunds for fuel economy updates and our Expert Rating and review of Mazda's new flagship.

2024 Mazda CX-90 Pros and Cons: Affordable Athletic Luxury for the Whole Family

The CX-90 brings Mazda’s signature athletic luxe vibe to the three-row class but isn’t without a couple faults.

Chris Tsui

Like most others who have spent time behind their artfully crafted steering wheels, I like a good Mazda . The CX-5 is a marvelous everyday driver, the CX-50 is a similar albeit more butch-looking alternative, the 3 is great , and the MX-5 is arguably the most fun-per-dollar you can have on four new wheels. When the company announced the new CX-90 three-row SUV to effectively replace the CX-9, I was curious to see how Mazda's luxurious and agile character would translate to a big family hauler like this. Aimed squarely at the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Toyota Grand Highlander, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 unsurprisingly has a lot to like but also isn't without a couple bugs and compromises.

Chris Tsui

Per usual with Mazda, the CX-90 drives great for its size, class, and price point. Well-calibrated, well-weighted steering and a chassis that feels as light as that of a crossover one size bracket down. The all-wheel-drive system and off-road mode more than held their own in a week of mild to heavy snow out in the Canadian Rockies. Even on all-season tires, it was able to put down power, carve corners in the snow at a reasonable pace, and even pull little, predictable powerslides.

Mazda's new straight-six is smooth, interesting, and, of course, quite powerful. It's also paired with a mild hybrid system that lets you glide to a stop and sometimes even cruise at highway speeds sans internal combustion. No, the engine doesn’t sound as smooth or nice as, say, BMW’s B58 but that’s a pretty high bar to clear. In the spirit of knowing the audience, engine codes like the one just mentioned don't usually show up in reviews of mainstream family three-row SUVs but I suspect more than a few CX-90 buyers will indeed get the reference. Hands down the most enthusiast-focused of all the mainstream three-row SUVs, it’s essentially a Toyota Grand Highlander for people who Like Cars.

Mazda Reviews photo

I was iffy on the CX-90's looks at first (I still don’t think its front end is as exciting-looking as other Mazda designs) but it's grown on me and I especially like the cab-back proportions that not-so-subtly hint at its longitudinal straight-six powertrain. The interior is quite attractive as well. Mazda has been on a luxury kick recently and this being the biggest, burliest, most luxurious gun in its arsenal, it is the brand’s fanciest cabin yet. There’s a soft suede material on the dash, and the brushed chrome is tasteful as is the ambient lighting at night.

Mazda

Apple CarPlay is wireless but, in this example at least, my phone did not automatically connect every time I started the car. In most instances, I had to go into a menu and manually instruct the system to connect, which was quite annoying.

In exchange for class-leading handling is a noticeably less cushy ride. The CX-90 isn't uncomfortable per se, but you do notice bumps in the road more than one probably should in a vehicle like this.

Chris Tsui

The most apparent thing holding it back from true luxury car status, though, is road noise. It’s a very far cry from the tinny 323 you had back in high school, but you can’t exactly whisper to your passenger while driving over rough pavement at 70 mph either. Some of the plastics, too, are noticeably budget like the swoopy trim on the doors. In a proper luxury-badged SUV, these would be an alloy whereas here, it's hard, somewhat cheap-feeling plastic.

Crimping its practicality creds are relatively limited storage cubbies in the front row. There are pockets in the doors, glasses storage up top, two cupholders, a wireless charging shelf for your phone, and a shallow armrest cubby, but that’s it. No big, purse-enveloping spaces or shelves in front of the passenger for additional devices like you get in, say, the competing Toyota.

Quick Verdict

Chris Tsui

Just like most of its stablemates, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is arguably the best-driving vehicle in its class and among the most nice feeling inside. Hyundai and Kia have upped their games in that last area in recent years with the Palisade and Telluride, respectively, while having infotainment systems that are admittedly better than the one Mazda offers. But those vehicles still use old, naturally aspirated V6s whereas the CX-90 boasts that new and really quite good turbo straight-six.

A couple of aspects hold the CX-90 back from truly competing with actual honest-to-god luxury cars, namely road noise, a sport-leaning ride, and buggy CarPlay integration. But on aesthetics, drive, and overall feel, this comes really close to stuff from Lexus and Acura while basically being one less reason for the Infiniti QX60 to live.

To sum up, the CX-90 successfully brings Mazda's accessible luxury, athleticism, and record of excellence to the world of three rows and is definitely worth a test drive.

All-New 2024 Mazda CX-90 Aims Up—and Makes a Direct Hit

Intriguing powertrains, fine handling, and a top-shelf cabin separate the Mazda from more mainstream three-row midsized SUVs

2024 Mazda CX-90 Turbo front driving

Update: Since this first drive was originally published in September, 2023, we finished testing the Mazda CX-90. Read the complete Mazda CX-90 road test .

The 2024 CX-90 is an all-new three-row midsized SUV from Mazda . “All new” means exactly that: It uses a brand-new platform, it has Mazda’s first-ever inline six-cylinder engine, and there’s a new in-house designed and built eight-speed automatic transmission. And there’s a plug-in hybrid model.

Using a rear-wheel-drive-based platform—a configuration preferred by sports luxury makers such as BMW , Genesis , and Mercedes-Benz —was important for Mazda’s upward aim. Being able to place the engine longitudinally rather than transverse, as is often dictated by a front-wheel-drive design, meant that Mazda’s engineers could use an inline-six rather than a V6. Together, the result is one of the finest-handling three-row SUVs that also happens to be endowed with one of the sweeter engines. Besides the impressive driving dynamics of the two CX-90s we rented from Mazda for this evaluation, a step inside the finely crafted cabin points to the fact that this is Mazda’s boldest attempt yet to move the brand upscale.

There are three powertrains for buyers to choose from. The base CX-90 Turbo has a 280-horsepower, turbocharged 3.3-liter inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup. The PHEV (plug-in hybrid) model combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a 17.8-kilowatt-hour battery, for a total system output of 323 hp. The most powerful version is the Turbo S, which uses the same basic engine as the Turbo but bumped up to 340 hp, giving it the most horsepower and torque of any production engine from Mazda. The standard Turbo’s performance numbers are based on 87 octane fuel, and the Turbo S and PHEV powertrain numbers are based on recommended 91 octane fuel. All three versions put the power to the road through an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive .

Pricing begins at $39,595 for the CX-90 3.3 Turbo Select. PHEV models start at $47,445 for the Preferred trim, while the 3.3 Turbo S starts at $51,750 and tops out at $59,950 for the 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus. Mazda charges a $1,375 destination fee on all CX-90s. The three-row SUV can be configured to carry six, seven, or eight occupants.

Mazda CX-70 Vs. CX-90: Comparing Midsize SUVs

mazda cx90 tour

Mazda CX-70 Vs. CX-90: Comparing Mazda’s Premium Midsize SUVs

mazda cx90 tour

Now that the first-ever Mazda CX-70 has joined the CX-90 in Mazda’s lineup of new premium midsize SUVs, it’s time for a detailed Mazda CX-70 vs. CX-90 comparison review.

Spoiler alert: the CX-90 and CX-70 share even more in common than what was expected, since the latter arrived as a two-row version of the CX-90 instead of a completely separate model as previously anticipated.

Still, there are several differences between the Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 to consider if you’re shopping these two SUVs against each other or competing midsize two-row or three-row SUVs.

See our Mazda CX-90 vs. CX-70 guide below to learn about the key differences between these SUVs so you can find your favorite.

Mazda CX-70 Vs. Mazda CX-90: Length, Size & Dimensions

Surprising to many, the Mazda CX-90 and CX-70 are nearly identical in length and dimensions throughout their trim lineups. In contrast to other automakers’ SUV lineups, Mazda’s two-row and three-row midsize SUVs share a wheelbase and overall size, making the differences hard to pick out from the exterior alone.

The three-row Mazda CX-90 measures up to 201.6 inches long, or 200.8 inches in states where a front license plate and holder aren’t required. Like the CX-90, the new Mazda CX-70 rides on a 122.8-inch wheelbase and measures over 200 inches in total length.

Width is the same across these two models, too, since they both ride on Mazda’s new large platform.

CX-90 vs. CX-70 Design

mazda cx90 tour

The CX-70 exterior is strikingly similar to the three-row CX-90 in both dimensions and design, as the two-row model is fundamentally the same SUV minus a third row. However, redesigned front and rear bumpers give the CX-70 a sportier look and help differentiate it from the CX-90, at least among the eagle-eyed.

A dark grille and black exterior trim accents come standard on the CX-70 in place of the three-row CX-90’s brightwork, separating these SUVs into a sportier two-row model and a more luxe-looking three-row family SUV. New 21-wheel designs further differentiate the sporty CX-70 exterior from the three-row model.

Inside, the CX-70 introduces an available red Nappa leather interior not offered during the first model year of the CX-90. A new hidden underfloor storage compartment in the CX-70 replaces space that would normally house the folded third row in the CX-90 model.

Seating Capacity, Passenger Volume & Cargo Space

mazda cx90 tour

The biggest differences between the Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 are their seating capacity and passenger space. The two-row CX-70 accommodates five passengers in comfort, while the three-row CX-90 seats up to eight.

Thanks to its standard third row, the CX-90’s passenger volume of 141.6 cubic feet tops the space you’ll find in the CX-70 for occupants by a substantial margin. However, the total interior volume including cargo space is nearly identical between the two.

The Mazda CX-90 also has a more customizable interior when it comes to available seating capacity, as this model comes in eight-, seven-, and six-passenger configurations.

So, if you’re after a large midsize SUV with second-row bench seating and space for up to five occupants, choose the CX-70. However, if you prefer the option of two second-row captain’s chairs plus a fold-down third row, the Mazda CX-90 is the SUV for you .

mazda cx90 tour

Standard cargo capacity – or the cargo space behind the SUV’s back row – is where the new Mazda CX-70 shines. With its long wheelbase and lack of third-row seating, the CX-70 features over 40 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row. This model also gets that hidden underfloor storage in place of the CX-90’s folding third row, increasing cargo-carrying capabilities and security.

The CX-90 starts with 14.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third row, but the volume grows to 40 cubic feet when the back row is lowered.

Both of these Mazda midsize SUVs offer over 74 cubic feet of maximum cargo space behind their first row.

Powertrain Options in Mazda’s Midsize SUVs

mazda cx90 tour

Mazda developed the CX-70 and CX-90 models in tandem on the same large vehicle platform, sharing a new standard mild-hybrid turbocharged inline-six engine, eight-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmission, and rear-biased i-Activ AWD system.

Shop for a three-row CX-90, and you’ll find the following powertrain options available:

 • 280-horsepower e-Skyactiv-G 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six mild hybrid
 • High-output 340-horsepower e-Skyactiv-G 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six mild hybrid
 • 323-horsepower e-Skyactiv-PHEV with a 2.5-liter engine and 68 kW electric motor

Like the CX-90, the two-row Mazda CX-70 generates up to 340 horsepower when equipped with the mild-hybrid inline-six turbo engine. Or, drivers can opt for the CX-70 PHEV and its 323-horsepower plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Motorists who select the Mazda CX-90 PHEV model can travel up to an estimated 26 miles on battery-electric power alone before the full hybrid system kicks in to provide extensive driving range. With its similar weight and identical powertrain, the two-row CX-70 PHEV offers a similar electric range.

Likewise, the maximum Mazda CX-70 towing capacity mirrors that of the CX-90: both Mazda midsize SUV models can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.

Price & Trim Levels: Mazda CX-70 Vs. CX-90

mazda cx90 tour

If you’ve taken a look at the Mazda CX-90 trim levels, you’ll notice they are structured around each of the SUV’s available powertrains.

For example, the Mazda CX-90 trims are as follows:

 • 3.3 Turbo Select
 • 3.3 Turbo Preferred
 • 3.3 Turbo Preferred Plus
 • 3.3 Turbo Premium
 • 3.3 Turbo Premium Plus
 • 3.3 Turbo S
 • 3.3 Turbo S Premium
 • 3.3 Turbo S Premium Plus

The 3.3 Turbo trims get the 280-horsepower inline-six turbocharged engine and the 3.3 Turbo S editions get the even more potent 340-horsepower variant of Mazda’s new inline-six powerplant.

And the Mazda CX-90 PHEV model with the 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid powertrain offers the following three trims:

 • PHEV Preferred
 • PHEV Premium
 • PHEV Premium Plus

The Mazda CX-70 lineup offers similar trim levels based on the inline-six and PHEV models and their accompanying features. However, this new two-row SUV boasts a more simplified trim lineup than its three-row SUV sibling.

Mazda is offering fewer CX-70 trim levels compared to its three-row model partly due to consumer feedback that the CX-90’s trims were too plentiful and confusing. Expect the CX-90 to cull some of its available trims in future model years, too.

Why Two Mazda Midsize SUV Models on the Same Wheelbase?

mazda cx90 tour

Many are surprised that the Mazda CX-70 was released as essentially a CX-90 without a third row.

If these two SUVs both ride on the same wheelbase, measure over 200 inches long and offer nearly identical interiors, it begs the question:

Why not just buy the three-row CX-90 and leave the back row folded until you need it for extra seating?

A CX-90 will cost a bit more than a comparable CX-70 due to that extra row of seating. The new two-row CX-70 also offers more cargo space, since it adds an underfloor storage compartment and doesn’t have to accommodate a folded third row in the rear cargo hold.

There are also the subtle styling and equipment differences between these SUVs, with the CX-70 the slightly sportier choice, but ultimately pricing will play a major factor in deciding whether Mazda’s two-row or three-row midsize SUV is right for one’s preferences and budget.

Many Mazda fans and two-row midsize SUV shoppers were expecting the CX-70 to arrive as a shorter-wheelbase SUV more akin to the CX-60 model offered in other markets, but here’s why Mazda made the CX-70 a long two-row SUV instead.

SUV shoppers now have two stellar Mazda midsize models to choose from, both featuring inline-six turbo or PHEV power, rear-biased AWD, a long wheelbase, generous cabin space, and premium interior amenities.

If you’re still weighing your options between these two models and other two-row and three-row options, remember you can always consider more affordable pre-owned options, like Mazda’s previous-generation three-row crossover SUV: the CX-9.

See our Mazda CX-9 vs. CX-90 comparison to learn how these models stack up, then compare them to the CX-70 if you still prefer two-row seating and greater standard cargo capacity.

Mazda CX-70 Vs. CX-90 Frequently Asked Questions

Which is bigger: the mazda cx-70 or mazda cx-90.

The Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 models are nearly identical in size, as these two midsize SUVs both ride on Mazda’s new large vehicle platform and share a wheelbase. Both models measure around 201 inches in total length from front to rear bumper. They’re also the same width. The CX-70 feels more spacious inside because it only has two rows of seats. The CX-90 has standard three-row seating.

Which has more seats: the Mazda CX-70 or the CX-90?

The Mazda CX-70 seating capacity is five with seating in two rows, including a second-row bench seat. The Mazda CX-90 accommodates up to eight occupants in its three-row interior. However, the three-row CX-90 also offers seven- and six-passenger cabin configurations for those who prefer captain’s chairs instead of bench seats. Any way you look at it, the CX-90 has more seats than the CX-70.

Why buy a Mazda CX-70 over the Mazda CX-90?

The Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 have more similarities than differences, so choosing between the two can be challenging. For those who don’t want or need a third row, the Mazda CX-70 can be appealing because of its airy interior that feels roomier than many other two-row midsize SUVs. However, the CX-90 offers extra seating flexibility with its standard third row.

As automakers are increasing electric automobile production in a scramble to meet new EPA emission standards, Mazda has debuted their first fully mass-produced partially electric vehicle with the 2024 CX-90 Hybrid.

Technically, this isn't Mazda's first BEV (or partial BEV) sold in the United States, but the Mazda MX-30 had a low driving range and was sold exclusively in California for the 2022 and 2023 model years. However, sales weren't great, and Mazda needed to focus on the larger market, so, the Mazda CX-90 Hybrid was born. Mazda isn't, however, fully focusing on electric cars for the future .

Replacing the outgoing CX-9 , the CX-90 is a slightly larger, slightly quicker and (for the Hybrid models) a much more efficient family SUV . For those in the market, look no further as we're going to cover everything you need to know regarding the 2024 CX-90 Hybrid, from the overall driving range on battery alone, to which trim might be best for you.

2024 Mazda CX-90 Hybrid

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Hybrid is all-new for the 2024 model year and is Mazda's flagship three-row family SUV. It's powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that is attached to a 17.8 kWh battery pack that elicits 25 miles of range.

 • Powerful hybrid powertrain
 • Surprisingly off-road capable
 • Nimble for its size
 • Powertrain sounds funny
 • Steep pricing
 • Other vehicles in segment offer more luxury

This guide provides comprehensive information provided by the manufacturer. HotCars sourced additional data for reliability (from J.D. Power), EPA gas mileage (Fueleconomy.gov), safety ratings (IIHS), and recalls (NHTSA). We evaluate five different metrics when determining a rating for each model. Journalist Chris Kluever spent time driving the 2024 Mazda CX-90 Hybrid for a week in October 2023. His personal insight is included in this review.

Here’s How Much A Fully-Loaded 2024 Mazda CX-90 Costs

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Hybrid is all-new for the 2024 model year. It's set to replace the CX-9 as their (now) mid-size three-row family SUV. There is also a conventional ICE version with a peppy inline-6 cylinder engine, but the hybrid comes with a bit more of an eco-conscious powertrain. The interior is a few inches larger than the outgoing CX-9 and has an adult-sized third row.

2024 Highlights

 • All-new SUV for 2024.
 • Fully digital instrument panel.
 • Wide-screen infotainment system.
 • Generator mode to charge the battery while driving.
 • 7- or 8-passenger cabin configuration.

Exterior Dimensions

Mazda has engineered a fairly ingenious plug-in-hybrid powertrain for the CX-90 Hybrid . First, you have the turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that, by itself, produces 189 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque (with 93 octane fuel). That is then directly linked to a 68-kW electric motor that produces an impressive 173 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque at 400 RPMs.

Sitting at the back of all of this is an 8-speed automatic transmission, and next to it is the 17.8-kWh battery pack that powers the sandwiched electric motor. In total, the powertrain output is 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. What's even more impressive is that it only adds 400 extra pounds to the overall curb weight compared to the ICE version.

The 17.8-kWh battery pack enables 25 miles of electric-only driving range. It even comes with a "generator mode" that can help you charge your vehicle while you're driving. The engine acts as a generator and provides power to the battery. Speaking of charging, you can get a full battery on a level 2 charger in two hours or 11 hours with a level one charger.

Performance Specifications

The Mazda CX-90 Hybrid comes with some other impressive driving features like rear-biased all-wheel drive, torque vectoring, and hill launch assist. Mazdas are known for impressive driving capabilities and the CX-90 Hybrid appears to be no different. It sits on all-season tires and has a multi-link rear suspension with a stabilizer bar and a double wishbone front suspension.

Towing Capabilities And Payload Capacity

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Hybrid has a standard towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, and the automaker touts that they have thoroughly improved towing capabilities with their newest model by employing torque vectoring and individual braking systems for each wheel where needed. There is an optional $700 "Essential Tow" package that gives you a tow hitch and wiring harness.

Off-Road Capability

Following suit with Mazda's newly respectable SUV off-road capabilities , the CX-90 Hybrid has an off-road mode that you can engage that will place power where it's needed, along with a downhill assist mode as well. It acts as a low-speed cruise control that starts when you press the button at whatever speed you're driving and can be further controlled by the brakes.

Although it does not have any locking differentials, the low-end torque from the electric motor should also help increase the Mazda's off-road prowess. The multi-link rear suspension with a stabilizer bar also helps in off-road situations.

2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV: Luxury-Lite Done Right

Best interior features of the 2024 mazda cx-90 hybrid.

 • Power-operated moonroof
 • Climatized first and second row seats
 • Second-row captains chairs with center console
 • Power-adjustable driver and passenger front seats
 • Nappa leather upholstery

Unlike the Mazda CX-90 ICE, the PHEV model gives you a bit more bang for your buck in the features, upholstery, and overall luxury department. Even in the lowest rung on the trim levels, the Preferred, you are treated to leather-trimmed, power-adjustable, and heated front seats and a power sliding moonroof.

You do still have to pay extra for niceties like the Bose premium sound system, the slightly larger 12-inch digital infotainment screen, and the heated steering wheel, though all these features come standard in the Premium Plus model.

While regular leather is standard no matter what trim you choose from, Nappa leather is only unlocked in the Premium Plus package. With white Nappa leather, you're treated to a tan-colored dashboard and open-pore wood grain trim.

With black Nappa leather, on the other hand, it is a more black-on-black vibe with carbon fiber-esque accents. You can choose between a 7- or 8-passenger arrangement, but going the 7-passenger route gives you heated second-row captains chairs with a center console.

Standard on all CX-90 Hybrids is the 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel that is customizable and changes colors based on what drive mode you're in. For the infotainment system, all models come with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The Premium Plus is the only model that comes with a slightly larger 12.3-inch display, as opposed to the standard 10.25-inch version. The head-up display (or Activ Drive Display as Mazda calls it) is only standard on the top two models and comes with traffic sign recognition.

Interior Dimensions

2024 Mazda CX-90 Hybrids have a total of 6 airbags, from knee curtain airbags for the front passengers to side curtain airbags for all occupants. JD Power has not released any reliability ratings because the CX-90 has only been on the market for so long.

However, the NHTSA has issued a number of recalls and noted some complaints referring to problems with the emergency braking and lighting systems. In looking at data from CarEdge, there is not much information with regard to maintenance as the vehicle was launched this year.

Driver Assistance Features

To help keep you and your family safe, the Mazda CX-90 Hybrid comes with a host of standard driver assistance features. These include lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. Getting up into the top two trims gives you features like auto speed limit assist coupled with adaptive cruise control. You can also get a 360-degree camera system and traffic avoidance assistance.

While rear cross-traffic alert is standard, the Premium Plus models also come with front cross-traffic alert and emergency stopping as well. The top two models also come with a collision reduction system that uses sensors around the vehicle to help you avoid accidents.

 • Standard lane keep assist
 • Secondary collision reduction system
 • Optional speed limit assist
 • Standard blind-spot monitoring
 • Optional front cross-traffic and braking assist
 • Standard adaptive cruise control

IIHS Crash Testing

Nhtsa 5-star safety ratings.

 • Recalls (NHTSA): 5
 • NHTSA Investigations: 0
 • The majority of the complaints deal with the electrical system, power steering problems, and forward collision avoidance systems malfunctioning.
 • Awards: IIHS 2024 Top Safety Pick +

Why We Didn’t Expect The 2024 Mazda CX-90 3-Row SUV To Be This Amazing

Mazda has a middle-of-the-road warranty offering that is standard throughout the industry. From a 36 month/36,000 mile full warranty to a matching maintenance warranty. You also get a decently long powertrain warranty that includes the hybrid battery pack in case anything were to go wrong with it. The maintenance warranty only includes replacing new parts. If you want to receive regular servicing from your local Mazda dealer, you'll have to pay extra.

There are not many plug-in hybrid three-row mid-size SUVs on the market right now. There are, however, plenty of traditional hybrid models on the market. The CX-90 does have a higher-than-most starting MSRP, but we found two models that fall within range. It's the 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe and the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE.

How The Mazda CX-90 Hybrid Compares To The Hyundai Santa Fe

The newest Santa Fe just got released with an entirely new look and new powertrains to choose from, but since we're focusing on hybrids, let's talk about the Santa Fe's turbocharged 1.6-liter hybrid 4-cylinder engine . It has a 6-speed automatic transmission and all models come with all-wheel drive. It has an output of 232 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. It also has a starting MSRP of $38,000.

All of which are similar to the Mazda except for a few things. First and foremost, the Mazda has nearly 100 more horsepower and torque. It also has a larger towing capacity of around 5,000 pounds compared to the Hyundai's 4,500 pounds.

While the Santa Fe did gain some extra space , it's not enough in comparison to the CX-90 and with all three rows up, the Santa Fe lags behind. Finally, the Santa Fe might look off-road competent, but the CX-90 appears to be better in this department as well.

How The Mazda CX-90 Hybrid Compares To The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE

The Jeep and the Mazda are almost identical when it comes to combined MPG ratings. The Mazda, however, has the Jeep beat in the overall driving range department with 490 total miles, while the Jeep only gets 440 miles of range. They both charge the battery pack from 10 to 80% in about an hour and a half on a level two charging station.

From a front and rear multi-link suspension, electronic limited-slip differential, and rear locking differentials, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4XE is actually trail rated . With 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, the 4XE can also tow up to 6,000 pounds versus 5,000 for the Mazda. What these hybrid SUVS do share, however, is battery capacity and an overall range on electricity alone of 25 miles.

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Hybrid comes in three models - Preferred, Premium, and Premium Plus. It's a simpler structure than found on the CX-90 ICE version and does start out with some more amenities than those base versions. The price differences will come into play when you're looking at exterior colors.

Everything features-wise is included in the different packages. Preferred comes standard with a power moon-roof and leather trimmed heated front seats. Premium receives 21-inch alloy wheels and second row captains chairs. Finally, the Premium Plus package gets a larger infotainment screen, Nappa leather, and ventilated front seats.

Hybrid SUVs With The Best MPG For 2024, Ranked

For a near full-size three-row SUV, 27 MPG on the highway is pretty impressive. As well, after an hour or two of driving, you can fully recharge the battery pack and continue going on electric power alone.

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 Hybrid is a great addition to the Mazda line-up. It showcases everything Mazda has been building up until this point, and shows where they're heading in the future. The CX-90 Hybrid is a perfect blend of technology, Mazda powertrains, and luxury-lite that they do so well .

The Premium model should have enough content to satisfy most buyers. But, if you absolutely need a heated steering wheel, an extra interior plug, and a 360-degree camera, then opt for the Premium Plus.

Possibly the only issue with the CX-90 is that it has had a ton of complaints about the driver assist features like lane keep assist and the emergency stopping system. Other than that, the new CX-90 Hybrid is bigger than it's predecessor and some would say bolder with its new design.

The Bumpy Ride of Mazda's CX-90 PHEV Signals Transmission Troubles

T he Mazda CX-90 arrived to nothing short of fanfare and would-be groupies swooning all over this new Mazda three-row SUV. This is the first plug-in hybrid vehicle from Mazda, and it hits all the right notes, except one. This family-sized SUV has style, class, and a cabin filled with impressive features, but "something's foul in the state of Denmark."

What's wrong with the Mazda CX-90 PHEV's powertrain?

Typically, we admire Mazda powertrains for their quick acceleration, power delivery at low rpm, and impressive refinement. Unfortunately, the CX-90's powertrain isn't refined enough for most drivers.

In fact, some MotorTrend reviews noted strange and unsettling behavior from the transmission.

"Gosh, does Mazda have refinement work to do on this powertrain. [It] needs improvement [and has] behavior and strange noises at low speeds." Buyer's guide editor, Zach Gale
"At parking lot speeds, the eight-speed transmission felt jerky when coming to a full stop, and although it wasn't frequent, its something that needs to be addressed in future updates." Miguel Cortina

Several MotorTrend editors spent time behind the wheel of the CX-90 PHEV , and many experienced the shuddering and hesitation at slower speeds or after a full stop. This isn't a situation that always occurs, but it can be unpleasant. The testing director provides a better explanation of the problem:

"The transmission is generally well-behaved when the gas engine is running. In EV mode, it occasionally makes a hard and abrupt shift, which always reminds me that even when operating purely on electricity, most PHEVs can't match the smoothness of a full EV. That's really noticeable during the transition from EV to hybrid operation when the powertrain regularly stumbles. First, it seems to cut electric power, then it suddenly feeds the gas engine with too much torque." Eric Tingwall, testing director

Mazda provides an explanation

The explanation of the strange jerking and shuddering at lower speeds in the CX-90 PHEV is less than ideal and acceptable.

"This design eschews the conventional torque converter for a multiplate wet-clutch setup, which not only improves efficiency by offering a more direct transfer of power from the engine to the drive wheels but also allows for a more connected driving experience. In certain circumstances, this can result in an increased powertrain feedback." Mazda

The wet-clutch transmission argument is a bit of a cop-out by Mazda. Many vehicles have dual-cultch automatic transmissions, and don't have the same herky, jerky feeling found in the new Mazda CX-90 PHEV.

Mazda owners have turned to the CX-90 Forum to voice complaints about the transmission feel at low speeds. This means professional driving revewers aren't the only drivers experiencing this feeling. Actual owners reported this issue as well.

Does this problem occur in other CX-90 models?

The CX-90 comes with a new inline-six engine ofering a traditional driving feeling. This regular version has far fewer transmission behavior complaints than the PHEV models. Still, there's enough evidence to suggest Mazda has work to do to remove the low-speed shuddering and jerkiness of the Mazda CX-90 PHEV's eight-speed automatic transmission.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
