Waiting game: some train operators are cancelling all services on Saturday, with effects also felt on Sunday

Train drivers working for seven train operators and who are members of the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen ( Aslef ) will walk out on Saturday 30 July. There will also be an impact on Sunday 31 July.

These are the key questions and answers.

Why are the train drivers strike and which train operators are affected?

Aslef called the strike “after train companies failed to make a pay offer to keep pace with the increase in the cost of living”.

The leader of the train drivers’ union, Mick Whelan, said: “We don’t see why we should forego an increase in salary to keep pace with inflation and help the privatised train companies make even bigger profits to send abroad.”

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG), representing train operators, believes pay increases must be linked to productivity.

An RDG spokesperson said: “We want to offer train drivers a pay rise but a fair deal also means working with us to deliver reforms which deliver the better punctuality and reliability to services in general and particularly on Sundays that we know our passengers want.”

Drivers working for the following train operators will strike:

  • Greater Anglia
  • Great Western
  • Hull Trains
  • London Overground (Arriva Rail London)
  • Southeastern
  • West Midlands Trains

Many train operators, including Southern, Thameslink, South Western Railway, Transport for Wales, Chiltern Railways , Avanti West Coast, Northern, TransPennine Express, East Midlands Railway and ScotRail, are unaffected.

Will any trains run at all for companies whose drivers are striking?

Not on London Overground or Southeastern.

Andy Lord, chief operating officer for Transport for London, said: “Planned strike action on the national rail network on Saturday will mean disruption for our customers. With no service expected on the entire London Overground network, I advise all customers to check before they travel and use alternative routes to complete their journeys.”

In the capital, there are generally options for all journeys that would normally involve the London Overground – though these are likely to take much longer.

Southeastern, which normally runs between London, East Sussex and Kent, says: “There will be no Southeastern services running on the rail network. Please do not attempt to travel by train on this day.”

However, a number of locations – including Hastings and stations on the line to Ashford International – are accessible on Southern services.

Where will the strike be most keenly felt?

On Great Western Railway ( GWR ) and London North Eastern Railway ( LNER ) – key intercity operators which would expect to have hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers booked on their services.

What is happening on GWR?

The operator says: “Please make alternative travel arrangements and only travel if absolutely necessary” on Sunday as well as Saturday.

Normally tens of thousands of families would be on trains in southwest England and South Wales.

On Saturday an extremely limited service will only operate on the Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington route, with addition links from Reading to Oxford and Basingstoke.

No trains will run to and from South Wales, the Cotswolds, Devon or Cornwall.

On Sunday there will be no trains from Swindon to Gloucester nor from Oxford to Worcester or Hereford, with a reduced service on other routes.

“Services will start later and finish earlier than normal and are expected to be extremely busy,” says the company.

On the East Coast main line?

On Saturday 30 July, only one LNER train will run from Leeds to London King’s Cross – at 7.15am. But there will be an LNER train every two hours on the main Edinburgh-Newcastle-York-London line, and additional hourly services between York and the English capital.

No LNER trains will run north of Edinburgh to other Scottish stations, but ScotRail services are available.

Early Sunday services could be affected on LNER.

Hull Trains wil run a single service from its home city to London King’s Cross and back on Saturday morning. Three Sunday trains have also been cancelled.

Grand Central, whose drivers are working normally, says: “A full Grand Central service will operate, we expect our services to be extremely busy so please book in advance. Customers who do not have a seat booked may have to stand.” The train operator runs from London King’s Cross to West Yorkshire and Sunderland.

Lumo, which runs on the East Coast main line from London King’s Cross to Newcastle and Edinburgh, will operate normally.

What about Greater Anglia?

One train per hour from Norwich, Southend and London Liverpool Street will run for most of the day, roughly 8am to 8pm, but a longer service to and from Stansted airport – though these are likely to be extremely crowded.

West Midlands Trains?

Only a special shuttle between Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International will run. Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry trains are expected to run normally, allowing some passengers to travel – though you may need to buy new tickets.

Chiltern Railways, which links the West Midlands and Chilterns with London Marylebone, says it intends to run a normal schedule. But it warns: “Services will be exceptionally busy and some services may be cancelled at short notice on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 due to industrial action and train crew shortages.

“Customers are urged to seek alternative modes of transport and only travel if essential.

“Due to strike action on other operating companies coinciding with the first weekend of the Commonwealth Games, customers should expect to queue at stations in the West Midlands and are advised to plan ahead, check their train before they travel and allow extra time for their journey.”

When is the next strike?

Aslef will stage a bigger stoppage on Saturday 13 August, with two more long-distance operators, Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry, affected.

The train drivers’ union says further ballots will close at Chiltern Railways; Northern Trains; and TransPennine Express on Thursday 25 August; and at East Midlands Railway on Monday 19 September.

The RMT union is staging its next national rail strikes on 18 and 20 August, with a London Underground strike sandwiched between them on 19 August.

Train drivers announce yet another rail strike on July 30 in summer of travel misery

Train drivers at eight rail companies will strike on July 30 in a dispute over pay , their union Aslef announced on Thursday.

The eight companies affected by the industrial action are: Arriva Rail London, Chiltern Railways , Greater Anglia , Great Western, Hull Trains, LNER , Southeastern and West Midlands Trains.

Announcing the strike, the union accused train companies of failing to make a pay offer to keep pace with the increase in the cost of living.

UK Train & Tube Strike | June 2022

Rail and Tube strikes

Mick Whelan, Aslef general secretary, said: “We don’t want to go on strike – strikes are the result of a failure of negotiation – and this union, since I was elected GS in 2011, has only ever been on strike, until this year, for a handful of days.

“We don’t want to inconvenience passengers – not least because our friends and families use public transport, too, and we believe in building trust in the railways in Britain – and we don’t want to lose money by going on strike.

“But we’ve been forced into this position by the train companies, driven by the Tory government. The drivers at the companies where we are striking have had a real terms pay cut over the last three years – since April 2019.

“And these companies are offering us nothing, saying their hands have been tied by the government. That means, in real terms, with inflation running ahead at 9%, 10%, and even 11% this year, according to which index you use, that they are being told to take a real terms pay cut. And that is not acceptable.

“Strike action is, now, the only option available but we are always open to talks if the train companies, or the government, want to talk to us and make a fair and sensible offer.”

Mr Whelan added: “We want an increase in line with the cost of living – we want to be able to buy, in 2022, what we could buy in 2021 – for those members – who were, you will remember, the people who moved key workers and goods around the country during the pandemic – who have not had a pay rise since 2019.

“It’s not unreasonable to ask your employer to make sure you’re not worse off for a third successive year. Especially as the train companies are doing very nicely, thank you, out of Britain’s railways with handsome profits, dividends for shareholders, and big salaries for managers.”

The announcement comes a day after the RMT said its members will walk out for 24 hours on July 27 after rejecting a “paltry” pay offer from Network Rail.

The offer was for a 4% pay rise backdated to January, another 2% next year and a further 2% conditional on achieving “modernisation milestones”.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps slammed the RMT strike accusing the union of being “hellbent on causing further misery for people across the country”.

The walk outs are set to cripple rail services this summer, and it is another blow for London commuters and businesses hit with severe disruption by a series of national strikes were held in June.

Is there a train strike today? How UK rail timetable is disrupted by planned strike on Saturday 30 July

Eight train operators are staging a strike on saturday 30 july - here's what you need to know.

Trains are parked at the platform at Kings Cross Station as members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) began fresh nationwide strikes in a bitter dispute over pay, jobs and conditions, in London, Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Train companies said only about a fifth of services across the country were due to run on Wednesday. (AP Photo/Frank Augstein)

Commuters will face more travel disruption this weekend as train operators walk out in a pay dispute .

Aslef union members at eight train operators are staging a strike on Saturday 30 July after talks broke down over pay .

It comes after widespread strikes on 27 July reduced services across England, Scotland and Wales .

Which services will be affected by the train strike?

London Overground No services will run on the London Overground as workers from Arriva Rail, the company which runs the service, are striking. All Overground services will be down for 24 hours so there won’t be any trains on Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday.

Greater Anglia has told customers to “please avoid travelling with us” as most routes won’t have trains running, and other service will be heavily reduced and disrupted. Norwich and Colchester to London Liverpool Street, Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street, and Stansted Airport to London Liverpool St will run one train per hour. The timetable is available here .

Great Western Railway Most parts of the GWR network will have no train service. The company is advising people to only travel “if absolutely necessary”. An extremely limited service will only operate on routes between Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington, Reading to Oxford, and Reading to Basingstoke. Services will start later and finish much earlier than normal.

Hull Trains will run a significantly reduced timetable, with one return trip scheduled between Hull and King’s Cross, leaving Hull at 8.24am and then King’s Cross at 11.48am. The train will pass through Brough, Howden, Selby, Doncaster, Retford and Grantham.

LNER will also be running an extremely limited timetable and are warning passengers that trains are going to be very busy. There are no services north of Edinburgh on this day, and trains to London from Edinburgh will be limited to between 7.30am and 4.30pm. There is only one train from Leeds departing at 7.15am from King’s Cross. Trains to Newcastle and York are also limited. Check the timetable here .

There will be no service on any London Northwestern Railway Route due to the strike action. People holding advance tickets on the affected dates can use them on alternative dates or return them to their point of purchase for a refund.

Southeastern The network will be closed entirely, so no trains will serve any of Kent, East Sussex or South-East London, including the Medway Towns, Tonbridge, Maidstone and the Weald, Thanet, Canterbury, Folkestone and Dover. There will also be no Southeastern trains at all on the Hastings line, nor the branch lines including Sittingbourne to Sheppey, the Medway Valley Line and the Grove Park to Bromley North line. No rail replacement buses or taxis are available either.

West Midlands Railway No trains will run on the West Midlands Railway service. Refunds or ticket change will apply to affected customers on this service too.

Are other services in Scotland and Wales affected?

ScotRail services aren’t directly affected by the strike but the company has warned passengers services may be busier than normal due to customers from other train operators travelling on its services.

Transport for Wales is also running a full timetable but services are likely to be affected by strike action at the other companies. This could result in short-change cancellations and changes, the company says.

The services between Shrewsbury – Birmingham are expected to be busy with the Commonwealth Games taking place, but with no service being operated by West Midlands Trains. Again, passengers are being advised not to travel unless necessary.
