Buyer’s Guide: Men’s Travel Vests

Are you a man who loves to travel? Are you tired of carrying around bulky bags or struggling to find space for your essentials? Look no further! We have the perfect solution for you – the men’s travel vest. With its functional design and versatile pockets, a travel vest is an indispensable accessory for any man on-the-go. Read on to discover everything you need to know about men’s travel vests.

Here’s what to consider when buying a men’s travel vest:

  • Material: Opt for a travel vest made from lightweight and breathable materials like nylon, polyester, or a blend of these. These materials are not only comfortable to wear but also moisture-wicking, ensuring you stay cool and dry during your journey.
  • Pockets: Look for a travel vest with numerous pockets and compartments. These pockets should be of varying sizes and specifically designed to hold different types of essentials such as your passport, phone, wallet, sunglasses, and even a small camera. The more pockets, the better organized you’ll be!
  • Security features: Ensure the travel vest has secure zippers or velcro closures on its pockets. This will help keep your belongings safe and secure while you explore new destinations.
  • Fit and size: Choose a travel vest that fits you well and allows for easy movement. Look for adjustable straps or drawstrings at the waist and/or sides that allow you to customize the fit. It’s also essential to consider the length of the vest to ensure it complements your body type.
  • Weight: Since travel vests are meant to be worn for prolonged periods, opt for a lightweight vest that won’t weigh you down. Heavy vests can add unnecessary strain, particularly if you plan on wearing additional layers underneath.
  • Versatility: Consider a travel vest that can be worn in various climates and seasons. Look for options with removable or convertible sleeves, which allow you to adapt to changing weather conditions.
  • Durability: Ensure that the travel vest is well-made and constructed with durable materials. Reinforced stitching and strong zippers are indicators of a vest built to withstand the rigors of travel.
  • Easy to clean: Choose a travel vest that is easy to clean either by hand or machine-washing. Quick-drying materials are also a bonus, allowing you to wash and wear your vest in no time.
  • Style: While functionality is key, who says you can’t look good while traveling? Pick a travel vest that suits your personal style, whether it’s a classic safari-style vest or a sleek and modern design.
  • Budget: Set a budget before searching for a travel vest. There are options available at various price points, so it’s essential to choose one that fits your needs without breaking the bank.

#8 – SCOTTeVEST RFID Travel Vest

SCOTTeVEST RFID Travel Vest

With versions for both men and women, the SCOTTeVEST RFID Travel Vest has more features than the headline RFID protection that will keep your personal and credit card details safe from digital hackers.

Fully machine washable, this vest includes a Teflon coating which makes it both water and stain resistant, for instance. There are an incredible 26 pockets overall, including a clear windowed pocket intended for your touchscreen smartphone.

There are also hidden spaces that allow you to thread through a pair of earphones without having the wires endlessly flapping about and getting caught up. That’s what we call a travel vest!

  • Men and women’s versions available
  • Teflon coated
  • 26 tech-friendly pockets!
  • No for going on safari
  • No zipper shield
  • Fit a little off

Is the SCOTTeVEST RFID Travel Vest for you?

This is a great travel vest for tech lovers due to features such as the clear windowed smartphone pocket among its 26 pockets, and special passage for earphone wires too. But its RFID blocking and protecting capabilities means this is a serious contender as a travel vest for anyone who travels with credit cards or passport – which, let’s face it, is all of us!

#9 – AyeGear V26

AyeGear V26

The AyeGear V26 is the only travel vest on our list that is officially designated as unisex in design, but that takes absolutely nothing away from the quality of this travel vest.

Breathable and machine washable, the AyeGear V26 consists of 26 different pockets, spread between offering access internally and externally. There’s a dedicated smartphone pocket which allows you to use your screen without having to ever remove the phone from its pocket.

There’s also a pocket at the rear capable of taking a 12” laptop or tablet, though we think this is more for when holding the vest in your hand rather than when wearing it. All the same, the AyeGear V26 has some clever features – did we mention the retractable cord for keys?

  • Machine washable
  • Touch sensitive smartphone pocket
  • 26 pockets overall
  • Only available in black
  • Laptop pocket not really useable
  • Not for the great outdoors

Is the AyeGear V26 for you?

It’s difficult to argue against a travel vest that boasts a combined internal and external pocket count of 26, including a touch-sensitive pocket specifically designed for using a smartphone without the need to hold it! But what’s more, the AyeGear V26 is also breathable and machine washable. What more could you possibly want?

#10 – Rothco Undercover

Rothco Undercover

Coming in a choice of three colors – black, khaki, and olive drab – the Undercover travel vest by Rothco is a subtle and unflashy vest, which is no bad thing when you’re traveling in an unknown place.

There are a dozen different pockets of various sizes to choose between, including a hidden pocket on the inside of the vest intended to fit your passport or other valuables such as your credit cards.

There’s also a tablet sized pocket for keeping your electronics secure while on the move, and pass-through ports so the wires of earphones can be threaded through the vest without them hanging and getting in the way.

  • Subtle styling
  • Hidden passport pocket
  • Ports for threading through earphones
  • No zipper weather shield
  • Not water proof

Is the Rothco Undercover travel vest for you?

We like the subtle styling of the Rothco Undercover travel vest, which won’t drawer any undue attention your way while you’re traveling. There’s a good number of pockets, including an all-important hidden passport pocket, and a handy port system for keeping your earphones out of the way too!

#11 – Beat The World Travel Vest

Beat The World Travel Vest

This vest by Beat The World intends to be all things to all men – the travel jacket that no man can do without. Does it achieve this? We think it comes pretty close! First, there’s the brilliant price point.

Then there’s the huge range of colors the travel vest is available in – want a bright red travel vest? No problem! Then there’s the fact this is a lightweight number, weighing just a few ounces.

And then, of course, there are the pockets, securable with metal zippers for extra safety while moving about!

  • Good all-round travel vest
  • Excellent price
  • Wide range of color options
  • Zippered pockets
  • Intended for men only
  • 90% polyester + 10% nylon

The Best Lightweight Travel Vest For Men

The Scottevest Lightweight Travel Vest

Eureka! We found the best lightweight travel vest for men. It’s hard to improve upon perfection but Scottevest has done it.

My husband has always been a huge fan of Scottevest apparel. In fact, the vest that he’s used for the last six or so years is the one piece of apparel he takes on every single trip.

He loves the convenience of being able to load the vest pockets with his smartphone, camera, backup charger, wallet, keys, passport, and more.

When we arrive at airport security—instead of going through the arduous task of emptying his pants or jacket pockets into one or more trays—he simply removes the vest, folds it, places it in a tray on the conveyer belt, and picks up the vest at the other end. Everything remains safely tucked inside the pockets ready to pick up and go.

He wears the vest on walking tours and shore excursions, leaving him hands-free to take photographs, take notes or reach into his pocket to pay for something.

He purchased a tan-colored one for tropical climates and a navy blue one for cooler ones. I can’t even count all the times the old vests have been washed. Yet, they still look and perform like new.

The new and improved lightweight travel vest: What we loved

Then we received the newest model for review: the featherweight version of the classic vest. My husband chose the black one (it comes in three different colors) and will never go back to the old version. Yes, you can improve upon perfection.

Really light:

mens travel vests with pockets

Weighing in at 0.6 pounds, this easy-to-wear, featherweight travel vest adds minimal heft or weight on your back or in your suitcase. The breathable fabric is comfortable enough to wear in warm weather and light enough to be worn under a medium or heavier weight jacket.

Plenty of pockets

With 16 pockets (some inside and others outside), there’s a place to stash everything you want to take with you. The zippered pockets keep your wallet safe, out of sight, and off-limits to potential pickpockets . A front pocket is a perfect place to stow a smartphone so it’s easy to reach when you need it.

One of the interior pockets offers RFID protection (radio-frequency identification) so no one can surreptitiously steal data (or your identity) from your wallet or credit cards. Another interior pocket is large enough to hold an iPad.

A pocket large enough to hold an iPad: How cool is that?

Stylish and durable

We love the water- and stain-repellent fabric as well as its fit. Two small slits at the hip make the fit forgiving and comfortable. The new lightweight travel vest is made of high-quality polyester with just enough sheen to keep it looking fresh and clean. It’s washable and dries quickly.

The vest comes in three colors

See the Feather Weight VEST ON SCOTTEVEST

We have a suggestion if you don’t want to splurge on the real thing.

We recently met for dinner, and my friend’s husband wore this vest. We fell in love with it and ordered one from Amazon (delivered the next day). This vest is far less expensive than the Scottevest (probably because it doesn’t have as many pockets and is made in China), but it’s extremely attractive, comfortable, and durable. Directions call for hand washing, but I threw the vest in the washing machine with no problem.

It’s lightweight and has two side pockets with zippers, a top pocket outside with a zipper, and an unzipped interior pocket. What attracted us was the all-season khaki color, but it also comes in navy, black, and army green.

Packing an outer layer in a carry on bag can be surprisingly difficult. Do you bring a  lightweight jacket , a fleece, a  hoodie , a  shirt/jacket hybrid ? How do you balance the bulk of a warm outer layer with packability and functional day to day use? The answer might be to actually… not to try.

A travel jacket or hoodie just isn’t always the best outer layer for every trip. No, really. Urban destinations, muggy climates, lots of travel days, and limited packing space can turn your expensive, state-of-the-art travel jacket into a bulky liability trapped in the bottom of your bag. And the solution to your outer layer packing woes might just be a travel vest.

That’s right, I said “travel vest.” We’re going to take a look at all the reasons you should pack a travel vest for your next adventure, and why the right travel vest may actually be better than that bulky (and expensive) jacket or fleece you’ve got your eye on. Here’s a guide to the best travel vests for any trip.

mens travel vests with pockets

Why You Should Pack a Travel Vest

Ok, I get it. You’ve never worn a travel vest before, or they’re just not your style. Heck, maybe you just don’t know how useful the right vest can be. But I’m here to say that travel vests kind of rock, and much like the fanny pack , they’re more useful than they look. Here are some of the surprising uses for a travel vest, and why you should wear a vest on your next adventure.

Travel Vests: An Extra (Free) Carry On Bag

A travel vest is basically an undercover extra  carry on bag . Seriously, when you add up all the extra storage space and secret zippered compartments in a travel vest, you’re looking at a few extra  liters  of packing space. If you’re not down with the metric system, that’s a lot.

If you’re flying on restrictive budget airlines like EasyJet, Spirit, or RyanAir, a travel vest may be a great way to pack in a slightly smaller carry on bag , which will save you a ton of checked (and carry on ) baggage fees.

Now, you don’t have to go overboard like the travel vest in this amazing  Telegraph video , but you can get a lot of mileage out of one. And while the extra space is nice, I think the best part of a travel vest isn’t just the extra sneaky storage—it’s the on-the-go organization.

Travel Vests Keep You Organized on Long Flights

Before I started using  packing cubes  I thought they were a stupid waste of money and packing space.

Spoiler alert:  they’re not.

The right travel vest is like a packing cube for your body… but cooler sounding.

Travel vests solve one of the biggest problems I have on a long flight—accessibility to all my cool in-flight stuff. If you store your carry on bag in the overhead compartment (congrats on getting a good boarding group assignment), you’ll have to empty all of the stuff you need while you’re actually flying, before you take off. Depending on how you like to fly that can easily include:

  • Water bottle
  • Another snack (don’t judge me)
  • Charging hub (for under seat power)
  • A book (or kindle if you’re fancy)
  • Snack #3 (shut up)
  • Travel pillow
  • Gum (fresh breath + no ear popping problem = heck yeah)
  • Pen (for those annoying custom forms)
  • Phone

You get the picture.  For long flights these items aren’t optional—they’re essential . So that means you can either try to unload your already bursting backpack to find all of these random bits before you board (stuffing them in your pockets or just holding them in your hands and pockets as you fumble with the QR reader). Or you can be “that person” who holds up the boarding process by standing in the aisle as the rifle through their bag for “just one more thing, I promise.”

Don’t be that person.

Load your travel vest up with your essentials—including your passport and boarding pass—before you even leave for the airport, and rest assured that you’ll have everything readily available on your next long haul flight. You won’t even have to struggle with the guilt of waking up that guy in the aisle seat to get to your battery charger. So that’s great.

Travel Vests Keep You Warm

This should be obvious, but it’s worth mentioning—travel vests are a great versatile layer for keeping you comfortable on a long flight. You still have all the warmth of a jacket without the constriction of (usually) awkward sounding mesh fabric sleeves. If you combine your travel vest with a nice  merino long sleeve shirt  or comfy  long sleeve henley shirt  you’re able to modulate and adjust your body temperature without taking off a layer (or your neck pillow, eye mask, and  bluetooth headphones ).

The key to packing light and still staying warm in almost any climate isn’t one super layer “to rule them all.” It’s a modular  capsule wardrobe  of functional quality items that you can layer (and unlayer) at will to adjust to your surroundings. A travel vest makes a great outer layer, especially in an air-conditioned bus or plane.

Travel Vests Keep Your Stuff Safe

One of the coolest features of a great travel vest are secure hidden pockets. They might be one of my favorite ways to keep my stuff organized, but also super secure. And honestly, you don’t even need the hidden pockets to keep your stuff close and safe.

A zippered chest pocket is a great place to keep your cash or passport because who on Earth is going to try to pick pocket your chest pocket? They’d have to stare you right in the eye while doing it! The whole point of theft proof clothing is that it makes it juuuuuust a little bit harder to steal from you than the average tourist. And a travel vest is perfect for that.

The array of pockets lets you keep everything in its place (that you can check with a quick pat), but it also keeps your valuables out of the most likely places a pickpocket will look—namely your back pocket and any zipper they can reach on your backpack. Keep your stuff safe by keeping it actually on you, even when you’re asleep on that crosstown bus.

Travel Photographers

Ever wonder why professional photographers usually look they just got back from an  African safari ? I mean, I guess some of them probably did, but you know what I’m saying. It’s because photographers have embraced the incredible power of the travel vest.

A vest is the best way to keep tons of (delicate) stuff close to hand and organized without adding a lot of bulk to your back. With a vest, you don’t need to take your bag on and off to access anything, which is a huge plus for travel and action photographers. If you want to change lenses, you can do it in seconds. Need to change batteries? No problem. Want to eat a power bar while your time lapse runs? Reach into Mr. Chest Pocket there.

Vests are great for hands free usage, including photographers and videographers that like to switch things up and shoot on the go.

Hopefully you’re convinced of the merits of the travel vest. Here are some of the best travel vests for men and women looking to take their travel wardrobe up a notch.

The Best Travel Vests for Men

mens travel vests with pockets

Our Favorite Travel Vest:  Bluffworks Horizon Quilted Travel Vest ($155)

I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to test out this travel vest, and I’ve got to say, I’m a huge fan.

The first thing that hits you about this travel vest is the quality of the fabric. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but plush comfy fabric wasn’t at the top of the list. However, the Bluffworks vest is one of the more comfortable pieces of clothing I own. And not just travel clothing .

It looks great, feels even better, and travels like a boss. I usually wear it while biking around  NYC  (especially in the fall and winter, and hopefully this spring), this vest is a 3-season workhorse. In fact, this  travel vest  has turned into an almost proxy day bag for jaunts around the town.

I keep bigger stuff in the interior pocket (it’s big enough for a notebook), and the zippered chest pocket is great for earbuds or chapstick, to keep me organized. I like having the option of both a snap and zipper closures for both bundling up on windy/rainy days (zipper) or letting a little breeze in when I’m on the go (snaps).

I’m a huge fan, and usually add this vest as a top layer to any long sleeve shirt or shacket for a classy look, loads of pockets, and a lot of extra comfort, especially when I’m headed to the airport.

mens travel vests with pockets

Best Secret Pocket Travel Vest:  Rothco Undercover Travel Vest ($70)

If you want a budget travel vest that’s simply brimming with secret pockets and hidden storage, the Rothco Travel Vest is for you.

It features 24 pockets(!) including some nice little touches like pen pockets, interior zippered pockets, and even a  large “hidden” interior lumbar secret pocket  to keep your passport or cash super duper safe. This vest looks simple and non-descript on the outside but it’s loaded with secret places to stash your cash.

mens travel vests with pockets

Best Tech-Friendly Travel Vest:  SCOTTeVEST Featherweight Vest for Men ($149)

If you’re looking for something a tad lighter and more packable, the SCOTTeVEST Featherweight Vest might be a good call. If you’re unfamiliar, SCOTTeVEST makes travel jackets, hoodies, and of course vests that are crammed with secret pockets. It’s kind of their thing. And this vest is no exception.

Stuffed with 16 pockets this is still a lightweight outer shell that’s great for tech obsessed explorers. And honestly, that’s probably the best use case for this vest. It’s not quite as stylish or plush as the Bluffworks Quilted travel vest, but it’s loaded with pockets to help you stay organized. If you need a pocket for your ereader, phone, headphones, passport, a snack, ipad, and I dunno… a glazed donut, this is the travel vest for you.

I like the lightweight feel and fit, but would really stress that this vest is more about organization than everyday wear. Still a solid choice.

SCOTTeVEST also makes a more stripped down version called the  101 Vest  with fewer pockets (this one “only” has 9 pockets) and a slightly more comfortable fabric and feel. It’s a more stylish and affordable option (thought it’s still $100), and would do well on the trail as a great alternative to lugging a  daypack for short hikes. I’m a fan of the dual zippered chest pockets and sunglass shammy, because shammies are cool. Prove me wrong.

mens travel vests with pockets

Best Hiking Travel Vest:  Columbia Silver Ridge II Travel Vest ($70)

If you want a travel vest that lets you hit the trails like a dapper dude, this is the action vest for you. Made with “Omni Wick” fabric (I hate the name, but it’s a pretty great feature), this travel vest is designed to move with you and keep you dry, even when you’re working up a sweat on a good hike.

Made from ripstop nylon (so it won’t snag), it boasts UPF 50+ sun protection. The zippered pockets, hand warmer pockets, and drawstring adjustable hem (nice) make this thing a beast for the outdoors. Let’s face it, you usually work up a sweat in a seam-sealed travel jacket after just a few minutes of hiking. Let your arms breathe with this travel vest and quit stopping to take off layers.

Our Favorite Travel Vest:  SCOTTeVEST Q.U.E.S.T. Vest for Women ($199)

Ok. Wow. This thing. Let’s start with the elephant in the room. This travel vest has 42 pockets. Yup. Four.Tee.Twooooooo. That’s nuts, but what’s even crazier is that it doesn’t look like it has 42 pockets. And that’s why it’s my favorite travel vest.

This vest is perfect for die-hard or long haul travelers who like to have a lot of gadgets and gear close to hand, especially on the plane. It’s also ideal for photographers as the hyper organized pocket layout can handle all your  camera gear  including: lenses, ND filters, SD cards, and more. There’s even a huge back pocket for oversized gear.

Yes, this vest is the priciest travel vest on this list, but, dang, is it worth it. Teflon treated for weather and stain resistance, so you don’t have to worry about your stuff getting ruined, it looks awesome, features a stowable hood for rainy days, and even boasts a “weight management system” so that you don’t look or feel like a garbage bag when you pack this thing to the gills. This travel vest is a boss, and is a great piece of gear for die-hard travelers looking to level up their carry on packing game.

Best Travel Vests with Secret Pockets:  Magellan’s Voyager 15-Pocket Women’s Traveler’s Vest ($84)

If you don’t care that you look like you’re on safari (you do you) this might be the perfect travel vest. No, this isn’t the most fashionable travel vest, but it’s loaded with functional features for the ultimate road warrior.

Mesh lining and sweat wicking zones keep you cool on a hike, while the high snap collar, funnel neck, and drawstring hem (nice, again) keep you warm when it’s breezy. Made of lightweight durable fabric, it’s packed with zippered pockets for literally everything. Women who’ve bought this vest simply love it. The navy goes great with denim or other travel pants, and doesn’t look quite as “techy” as the khaki color. Just saying.

mens travel vests with pockets

Best Budget Travel Vest:  FlyQ Lite Travel Vest ($36)

I actually can’t believe this travel vest is under $40. Sure, it’s on sale right now, but still. That’s almost cheaper than a pair of  ExOfficio travel underwear  (which are also fantastic).

This travel vest is slim, lightweight, and stylish without sacrificing the functionality and pocket space of other travel vests. It has a  sunglasses  pocket (with microfiber liner), a key clip, a water bottle pocket, and even an  interior touch sensitive pocket for your phone (which kind of works, but still, better than nothing). This vest is also more than enough to keep you warm on the next chilly flight, especially if you couple it with a nice  long sleeved flannel shirt .

mens travel vests with pockets

Best Tech Travel Vest:  SCOTTeVEST RFID Travel Vest for Women ($149)

Ok. So here’s the thing about “ RFID Blocking ” travel gear. It’s complete and utter nonsense. There has never been a single reported case of RFID identity theft. Ever. I’m serious. RFID blocking gear is travel snake oil. However, that’s not why I like this travel vest.

The SCOTTeVEST RFID Travel Vest is just a great vest with tons of thoughtful features. It’s made with teflon treated fabric for stain and rain resistance (awesome), and while the RFID pocket is just plain nonsense, it’s still a nice small pocket to keep your cards or cash organized. Just because RFID theft isn’t a thing doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep your stuff organized.

Lightweight, sleek (aka there aren’t any obvious “cargo” pockets on the outside), it’s packed with big usable pockets to store stuff like a phone, passport, boarding pass, and even an iPad or kindle. This is just a well made travel vest for women who like to travel with a lot of gear.

mens travel vests with pockets

Best Everyday Travel Vest:  Orvis Pack-And-Go Vest ($89)

Categorizing this travel vest is tough because it just kind of… works. The simple layout and clean lines don’t scream “I’M A BACKPACKER!” but it still more than gets the job done. Interior zippered pockets, comfy lining, mesh vents, storm-front zipper, and a small stuff sack packing design make this travel vest an everyday kind of travel gear—which is kind of the whole point.

Understated but still built for the road, this travel vest is solid pick.

The right travel vest can be the top layer you never knew you needed. With added storage space, tons of zipper pockets for organization and security, and 3-season wearability, a travel vest is a great way to fly comfortably , avoid extra baggage fees, keep your stuff safe, and streamline your entire travel experience. Be careful, once you’ve tried a vest, you’ll never wear sleeves again.

  • Travel vests are basically an extra “free” carry on bag
  • Interior zipper pockets can keep your tech and gear safe, dry, and organized
  • Look for teflon treated fabric that stops water and stains
  • Secret pockets are a nice feature on a travel vest, but not the only thing you should look for

When it comes to quick trips that last a day or two, a duffel is what you need. And Herschel’s Novel bag is, in so many words, the best bang for your buck. Not only is it incredibly durable and spacious enough for several fits (there’s also a separate compartment for your shoes), but it’s also less than $100. That’s what we call a win-win.

Drawing its inspiration from origami, Longchamp’s convertible travel bag is one of the most versatile out there. Wear it as a backpack or carry it around as a weekender, this bag is going to get you from point A to point B with ease. It’s sporty and practical and effortlessly in fashion.

From Karl Lagerfeld to David Fincher to Martha Stewart, all the high rollers can be seen toting this suitcase. It’s got distinctive grooves and an ergonomic design, and it just screams class. Plus, the TSA-approved locks are keeping your belongings extra secure.

For train travel, bus voyages ( ooof, we feel your pain ), or even a trip involving a connecting flight, there’s nothing like a good backpack to keep you hands-free and moving at a quick pace. Made of water-resistant nylon, Away’s backpack is a durable choice with padded shoulder straps and a laptop pocket.

Surprisingly lightweight, Métier’s duffel is a luxe option for frequent travelers. It’s thoughtfully designed with specific places for toiletries, sunglasses, a laptop, and the rest of your valuables. A secret card slot in the exterior pocket makes for easier travel at the airport.

In the luggage realm, there are very few that hold a candle to Samsonite. For more than a century (yes, that long), the brand has been churning out travel accessories, always offering quality styles for the day. It doesn’t get bogged down by its history. This soft-shell spinner, for example, features wireless charging pockets and a compartment for toiletries, and it’s made of 100 percent ballistic nylon. It’s also less than $250, which makes is a virtual steal.

Business executives know the importance of a garment bag. When you just hopped off the plane and are running late to that meeting, never stress trying to find a steamer again. TUMI is saving you from wrinkle embarrassment, keeping you put together everywhere and anytime.

We love our garment bags in duffel form. They are practical for traveling with suits or other formal clothes, but you can also use them for quick casual trips. Need more convincing? Check out our endorsement of this one.

In a flexible neoprene, Dagne Dover's carryall is one of the lightest duffels out there. It's got a laptop sleeve, and it also comes with a shoe bag and a dust bag. It also makes for a great gym bag, if you want something that's multipurpose.

We love this duffel so much, it was even one of the travel products our editors can't live without . Converting from a garment sleeve to a duffel bag, its versatility meets a luxurious style for a bag you will have for decades.

Krasnodar, Russia

Krasnodar, Russia

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Krasnodar

Here we are in the South of Russia. Welcome to Krasnodar, a major economic and cultural center of North Caucasus, also called “the capital of Kuban”. Krasnodar, perhaps, is one of the most interesting resort towns of the Russian Federation. It is a relatively young city founded by the Cossacks in в 1793 on the lands granted by Ekaterina II (hence its former name was Ekaterinodar). Later, when the Soviet system rose to power, the city was re-named to Krasnodar in 1920, and it preserved this name up to date.

Krasnodar is a center of the Russia’s southern touristic zone, located of the right bank of the Kuban River, 120-150 km from two warm seas – the Black and the Azov. It is an interesting fact that the city is located in the golden section of the Earth, almost in between the equator and the North Pole, right on the 45th parallel, also called “the Golden Line” or “the Life Line”. There exists an opinion that the living conditions in these latitudes are most favorable for human.

In spite of the city’s “youth” Krasnodar has many historical landmarks, while its architectural look is various and represented by different styles from Baroque and Classicism to late Modern. In Krasnodar, there is one of the largest Russian churches – Saint Catherine’s Cathedral, built as early as in 1914 and survived by a miracle under the Soviet power. It is also worth while visiting the Krasnodar main Orthodox Church – Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Interesting and dramatic, was the fate of this, one of the Russia’s most beautiful churches, an example of Russian and Byzantine templar style. Alexander Nevsky Military Cathedral was erected in April 1853, but later on, in year 1932 it was blown up by the Communists. And it was not until May 2006 when the inauguration ceremony of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral built anew took place.

Nowadays the Krasnodar architectural variety combines the harmony of old and modern structures. Now, next to the churches there are also modern high-rise buildings (the Marriott Hotel”), shopping and entertainment centers (“Red Square”), modern concert halls (Palace of Arts “Premiere”), restaurants, and night clubs. The city also strikes with its numerous museums, theaters, art galleries. Particularly, if you find yourself in Krasnodar, we recommend you to visit the Krasnodar Regional Art Museum named after F. A. Kovalenko to enjoy a rare collection of Russian avant-garde and Dutch art of XVI century, and also attend concerts of SSAI “Kuban Cossack chorus” to listen to Kuban Cossack, Russian and Ukrainian folk-songs.

Two Krasnodar unusual landmarks enjoy wide popularity among tourists and local community: the Monument to a purse and the Monument to the doggies in love. Do you want to turn round? Then you are to the purse. It is enough to rub your purse over it, and you will have more money. But if you are unlucky in love, then the loving couple of dogs will help you, you should stroke their small paws and love will certainly come to you.

Krasnodar: A hot spot for Cossacks, bourgeoisie and outdoor fans

mens travel vests with pockets

For five years in a row this southern city has topped the ranking of Russia's best places to live , and it is not surprising. Krasnodar’s main street is so green that walking along it feels like a stroll in the park, local eco-friendly food is served on tables in restaurants, and a high-speed train will take you to the Black Sea coast in just 2 hours.

RIA Novosti/Vitaly Timkiv

I usually visit new Russian cities by taking the train. This time, it’s Krasnodar, the unofficial capital of the Russian south, about 1,300 kilometers from Moscow. My comfortable double-decker train from Moscow arrives, after 19 hours, at 5:30 a.m. I’m shocked: it’s already + 28 Celsius and the sun is rising. Summer in Krasnodar is so long that even September is warmer than May.

Next to the train station I see a small Lenin statue surrounded by minibuses, as well as their drivers and passengers. Apart from that, the streets are empty. The small houses along the main streets hide themselves behind big fences and vine tendrils, just like in the south of Europe.

More than 830,000 residents live in Krasnodar, but at 6 a.m. you will hardly see even one of them. The city is quite young; founded in 1793, but the settlement only obtained official city status in 1867, exactly 150 years ago.

The street signs sometimes mention a place called Yekaterinodar. That’s the old name of Krasnodar, which means ‘gift of Catherine.’ Actually, two Catherines decided the city’s fate: Catherine the Great gave the land to the local Cossacks to build a fortress. And St. Catherine of Alexandria is the patron saint of the city. In 1930, Stalin tried to erase all memory of the city's imperial past, so Yekaterinodar became Krasnodar – ‘a red gift.’

Nevertheless, Krasnodar retains memories of its historical past. Instead of English, the street signs are doubled with their pre-Soviet names . Lenin Street used to be Sobornaya (Cathedral) Street, and Sovetskaya Street was called Grafskaya (Palatine).

Fur hats and horses for the strong

Legion-Media

For centuries Yekaterinodar was the military headquarters of the Kuban Cossacks . After the Russian-Turkish and Russian-Polish wars in the 18th century, the Black Sea Cossacks were granted their own lands in the Kuban region by Catherine the Great, where they founded a military fortress and their own capital. It was considered as a gift of honor for their help on the battlefield.

After the revolution in 1917 the Cossacks set up their own republic in Kuban, but in the 1920s they were deported by the communist government, which viewed them as a threat. Many also died of starvation in the Soviet famine of 1932–33. Only later in the 1930s did the repression stop, and soon after the Cossack organizations began anew.

Today, the Cossacks are still classified as an armed organization, but more often they present themselves as keepers of old traditions. They've opened museums, and they dance and sing at every major traditional festival. Also, the  Kuban Cossack Choir tours the world.

Between steppes and Vienna

RIA Novosti/Vitaly Timkiv

Walking through Krasnodar today you won’t meet many Cossacks, but you will see a lot of small sculptures , friendly people in shorts, summer dresses and a light smile on their lips. I suppose it’s because of the weather. While in Moscow we have about 1,730 average sun hours per year, Krasnodar enjoys more than 2,100. A good reason to smile, isn’t it?

There's a surprise in the city center around Krasnaya Street and Zhukov Square . While you will recognize a monumental post-Soviet colorful mosaic on the left, there's one bourgeois town villa after another on the right. Neo-classicism, Art Nouveau, and many more early 20th century Western Europe architecture styles are delights for the eye.

Peggy Lohse

I head on to the  Krasnodar Memorial Museum , founded in 1879 by Evgeny Felicyn, a local Cossack military, scientist, historian who was dedicated to social causes. Except for the exhibit, you should check out the surprisingly rich décor inside the  Bogarsukov villa , where the museum has been located since the early 1960s. And do not lose sight of the ceiling! There you’ll find Caucasian scenes from the steppe, as well as gold and silver ornaments á la Vienna .

The town’s green thumb

RIA Novosti/Vitaly Timkiv

Where else to go in Krasnodar? Locals have a clear answer: walking along  Krasnaya Street , which crosses the entire city center and passes almost all important sights, including the  statue of Catherine the Great  and the local Triumphal Arch . A long green stripe leads to the city theater and a square with a monumental Kuban flag.

Close to the middle of Krasnaya Street I need a rest, a coffee and a snack. No problem, there are dozens of cafes. My personal tip: try the  Guryevskaya kasha  in the southern Russian coffeehouse chain  ‘Khlebnye  istorii ’ . This is not what you often find on a menu, and it’s tasty and healthy.

Peggy Lohse

Now, the lower part of Krasnaya invites you on intensive shopping tours, and will surprise you on the weekend. On Friday evenings starting at 8 p.m. the street is closed for cars and public transportation to give pedestrians, joggers, bikers, skaters, musicians, artists and all the people without a car more space to enjoy the weekend .

Walking along the opposite side of Krasnaya Street, you make a circle and reach the route’s starting point through the city’s heart –  the Catherine Garden . The old trees remember Krasnodar’s Cossack leader, whose house used to stand across the road in the 19th century – locals believe the young city once started from this place 150 years ago.

Krasnodar travel guide

Krasnodar tourism | krasnodar guide, you're going to love krasnodar.

Krasnodar was founded in 1794 by Black Sea Cossacks to guard Russia's southern border. Today it is one of the most important cultural centers in Southern Russia, with a diverse population of 775,000. It has renovated tsarist-era buildings and pleasant streets lined with cafes, restaurants, and bars, earning the city the title of 'Little Paris'.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Krasnodar

Krasnodar has some great museums and galleries including the Krasnodar Regional Art Museum Of Kovalenko and Museum of Military Technologies Oruzhie Pobedy.

2. Monuments

The city's many monuments tell the tale of Krasnodar, from the Monument to Catherine the Great to the Monument to Kuban Cossacks.

Relax in one of the city's many green spaces, including Rozhdestvenskiy Park of Culture and Leisure and the City Botanical Garden.

4. Krasnaya Street

Take an evening stroll on Krasnaya Street, which closes to the traffic and comes alive with revelers, becoming the city's nightlife center.

5. Make a Splash

Take a dip at one of Krasnodar's water parks, Equator Aquapark and Aqualand Waterpark.

What to do in Krasnodar

1. a dazzling array of russian masterpieces.

The oldest art gallery in the Caucasus region, and still the largest, the Kovalenko is Krasnodar's artistic jewel. Its mission is fairly simple: giving a panoramic impression of Russian art from the early days of "the Rus" in the medieval era, to 19th century realism, Soviet Constructivism, and more recent post-modern innovators. This means that there are plenty of Orthodox icons and evocative landscapes on display, and much for fans of Russian art to discover.

2. A Serene Spiritual Survivor

The center of the Kuban Orthodox eparchy (essentially like a diocese), the beautiful cathedral of St. Catherine was built in the 1890s but has the feel of a much older building. Slated for demolition in the dark days of Stalinism to use its bricks for homes, the cathedral endured (while Krasnodar's other cathedral, the Alexander Nevsky, was flattened). Nowadays, it's a serene spiritual hub where visitors can expect to be warmly welcomed whenever they arrive. And, if you're really lucky, you may even get a chance to ring the church's bells.

3. Tanks For The Recommendation!

One of the more outlandish museums in the Caucasus, the Museum of the Weapons of Victory is located in Victory Park, right next to the River Kuban. Dedicated to the heroes of the Red Army during World War Two, it includes a bombastic collection of tanks and artillery - both vital tools in seminal battles like Kursk, which turned back the Nazi advance into Central Asia. A timely reminder of the pivotal role the area played in the 1940s, it's also great fun to clamber over the giant tanks, and educational, too.

4. Get Soaked In The Summer Sunshine

Literally translated as "Sunny Island", Solnechny Ostrov is where locals tend to go for relaxation, particularly when the Caucasian summers really take their toll. Part of the reason is the waterpark, which is the ideal place to cool off, especially if you have a few kids in your party. But the area is also home to Safari Park, Krasnodar's main zoo, where you can meet over 120 types of animal. And if that's not enough, there's also a monument to trailblazing cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.

5. A Small But Powerful Historical Attraction

Located in the center of Krasnodar and designed on a modest scale, the Felitsyn Museum provides an essential history lesson for anyone who wants to get to grips with the city's past. There's an arresting archaeological exhibition going all the way back to the era of nomadic tribes, information about the region's iconic Cossack warriors, as well as sections on the Russian Civil War, which took place right after the Revolution in 1917. You might think of Krasnodar as a backwater before visiting the Felitsyn, but its collections will set you straight. It's a city that has been at the heart of world history.
