Ryan White CARE act

The Ryan White Program is the single largest federal program designed specifically for people with HIV/AIDS. First enacted in 1990, it provides care and support services to individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS, functioning as the "payer of last resort;" that is, it fills the gaps in care for those who have no other source of coverage or face coverage limits.

Pre-travel consultations: Obtain extensive pre-travel counseling on food, water, and insect borne disease. We prescribe prophylaxis for malaria, traveler's diarrhea, and altitude sickness and administer travel vaccinations. As an Infectious Disease clinic, we have experience in caring for the special needs traveler, such as pregnant women and patients with immunodeficiencies or other health issues.

Post-travel infections: Expertise in the evaluation and management of post-travel fever (including malaria, typhoid, and dengue), parasitic diseases, diarrhea, and rashes.

Scheduling / Appointment Preparation: If possible, the best time to schedule an appointment is 4-6 weeks prior to travel. But even an appointment the day before travel is better than none, especially if malaria prophylaxis is necessary. Traveler Health Information

World Map

Why is it important to think about health while traveling?

United States residents make approximately 60 million trips to other countries each year ( 1 ). More than half of travelers to developing countries become ill during their trip. It is estimated that about 8% of travelers seek medical care for a travel-associated illness either during or after travel ( 2 ).

Be sure to keep the following information in mind as you prepare to travel outside of the United States to ensure that your trip is a success.

Before Traveling

See a doctor or other healthcare provider 4-6 weeks before your trip. Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on your destination, the length of your stay, the types of activities you will be involved in during your trip, and previous vaccinations you have received. If necessary, refill prescriptions to make sure you remain healthy.

Additional information and resources:

  • Traveler health mobile apps
  • CDC travel notices
  • Health information specific to your destination (e.g., medicines, vaccines)
  • World Health Organization Disease Outbreak News

While Traveling

There are actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases, so your behaviors are important.

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, scrubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating
  • Avoid eating undercooked food and drinking contaminated water
  • Wear appropriate clothing and apply insect repellent to prevent bug bites
  • Food and water safety
  • Water disinfection
  • Prevent bug bites
  • Diseases spread by ticks
  • Traveler’s diarrhea

After Traveling

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip.

  • Getting sick after travel
  • Find a clinic

Division of Infectious Diseases

  • Travel Medicine

The Division’s International Travel Clinic offers unique services to individuals planning to travel abroad.

Division faculty with expertise in travel and global infectious diseases provide advice based on a traveler’s destination about preventative practices, including:

  • Immunizations for viral hepatitis, typhoid fever, meningococcal, Japanese encephalitis, etc.
  • Prophylactic antibiotic therapy, such as malaria prophylaxis
  • information about how to avoid infections

Travelers should plan to seek consultation at least three weeks before departure  to ensure that all appropriate immunizations can be administered and become effective. However, patients can also be seen on shorter notice. Patients with post-travel health concerns may likewise seek consultation.

Payment is required at the time of service. Exact prices will not be given over the phone as the pricing structure fluctuates and pricing will be determined based on immunizations needed at the time of the visit. We accept cash, checks or charge cards. Most insurance companies will only reimburse charges if it is medically necessary. We do not send claims to your healthcare provider. If you would like to submit the charges yourself, please do so and we will provide you with the receipt.

The most pressing question travelers ask is “What shots do I really need?” Our Nurse Practitioners consider two categories when answering this question; required and recommended vaccines. Then, depending on destination, itinerary, and budget, we’ll help you make the best decisions to protect yourself.

Meningitis (REQUIRED)

Required for pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj/Umrah. A serious bacterial infection affecting the lining of the brain, it is transmitted by exposure to respiratory secretions. The vaccine is routinely recommended for persons who live in close contact with others (dorms, military barracks), and individuals traveling to the “Meningitis belt” of sub-Saharan Africa from December to June.

Yellow Fever (REQUIRED)

Carried by mosquitoes, this viral infection can cause a deadly hemorrhagic fever. It occurs in Africa and South America. Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination may be required for entry into certain countries and for persons who have traveled through endemic countries.

Cholera (RECOMMENDED)

Cholera is a diarrheal illness caused by a toxin producing bacteria. Approximately 10% of infected individuals will develop severe symptoms. It spreads through contaminated food and water, usually in areas with very poor sanitation.

Hepatitis A (RECOMMENDED)

This viral disease of the liver is a traveler’s number one health threat. It is a food and water borne disease that is transmitted through the fecal/oral route (usually passed by persons who use the bathroom and do not wash their hands). Hepatitis A occurs worldwide and we now routinely vaccinate children against Hepatitis A in the U.S.

Hepatitis B (RECOMMENDED)

An infection of the liver spread by contact with blood and other body fluids. It is recommended for health care workers, persons traveling to moderate or high risk countries, persons participating in adventure travel and those who may have unprotected sex or use I.V. drugs. If one is concerned about the quality of medical care in a destination country, the vaccine should be considered.

Influenza (RECOMMENDED)

Protection against the flu. CDC recommends flu vaccine for all travelers as flu can circulate year round in warmer climates.

Japanese Encephalitis (RECOMMENDED)

This mosquito borne disease is a risk to persons traveling to agricultural areas in Asia. Although it is relatively uncommon, it is potentially fatal.

MMR (Measles/Mumps/Rubella) (RECOMMENDED)

This combo vaccine is recommended for persons born after 1956 who haven’t received two doses of MMR after their first birthday. Others are generally considered to be immune.

Polio (RECOMMENDED)

This food and water spread virus can produce paralysis. Although persons are routinely vaccinated as children, the protective benefit of the vaccine only lasts until about age 18. An adult Polio booster is recommended for those visiting endemic countries or those countries where Polio continues to be imported.

Rabies (RECOMMENDED)

This disease affects the nervous system and is almost universally fatal once symptoms appear. The virus is transmitted through the scratches and bites of infected mammals (e.g. dogs, cats, monkeys, etc). Pre-exposure vaccination should be considered for persons working with animals, travelers to remote or rural areas and for extended stays in endemic countries.

TBE (Tick-Borne Encephalitis) (RECOMMENDED)

This virus is spread through the bite of infected ticks. It is NOT found in the USA, but is present in parts of Europe and Asia. Travelers who spend time outdoors in or around forested areas may need to consider vaccination.

TDAP (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis) (RECOMMENDED)

This combo vaccine has been widely used since 2005 as the typical “Tetanus booster”. The three diseases it protects against are found around the world.

Twinrix (RECOMMENDED)

This vaccine combines Hepatitis A and B together.

Typhoid Fever (RECOMMENDED)

This is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. It is especially a concern in areas with sub-standard sanitation. This vaccine is recommended for many travelers, in particular for those with longer stays and travel to small cities, towns and rural areas off the usual tourist routes.

Varicella (RECOMMENDED)

Also known as Chicken Pox, this vaccine is recommended for anyone who has not had the disease.
