10 Best Things to Do for Couples in Manchester

What to do on a romantic trip to manchester.

Manchester is a great destination for couples thanks to its quirky nature and unusual array of attractions. Its long and remarkable history has helped to create a cityscape of outstanding shopping, dining and nightlife, as well as an interesting selection of things to see and do.

If you’re looking for a typical romantic dinner, you’re certainly spoilt for choice. There’s no shortage of places for a few drinks afterwards, too. However, for some inspiration in arranging a date with a difference, check out the items on our list of the best things to do for couples in Manchester .

Take a stroll by the canal

Or even a cruise.

places to visit in manchester for couples

Manchester has some 10 miles of canals running right through the city centre, a vestige of Manchester’s past as one of the world’s foremost industrial hubs. Many have towpaths running alongside them, where you can enjoy a peaceful walk in pleasant surroundings, away from the hubbub of the city. The Castlefield or Ancoats areas are especially suitable.

If you’d rather enjoy the scenery without all the exercise, you can take a cruise along the Manchester Ship Canal. The 36-mile-long waterway was built in the late 1800s to link the city with Liverpool and the coast, allowing oceangoing cargo ships to reach Manchester’s many mills and factories. There are now several services cruising along the canal, some offering meals, views, drinks and more.

Ginger’s Comfort Emporium

Try some weird and wonderful sundaes.

places to visit in manchester for couples

Ginger’s Comfort Emporium is an outstanding ice cream parlour on the top floor of Affleck’s. It’s known for its 1950s-style décor and some very unusual concoctions. Marmalade on Toast or Olive Oil & Sea Salt may not sound like particularly appetising desserts, yet they’re among the top sellers.

Ginger’s Comfort Emporium has several British Street Food Awards to its name, a recipe book and an ice cream van that makes regular appearances at summer markets and festivals. The unique setting of their home address and the menu items will certainly give you plenty to talk about.

Location: Affleck’s, Church St, Manchester M4 1PW, UK

Open: Monday–Saturday from 10.30 am to 6 pm, Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm

Relax at a spa, enjoy a little peace and pampering.

places to visit in manchester for couples

A relaxing spa session is a great way to chill out during your visit to Manchester, with many places offering couples’ treatments and packages. Some of the city’s best spas are found in hotels, such as the Urban Oasis Spa in the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. However, there are some noteworthy standalone spas, too.

The Youth Sanctuary on Oldham Road is certainly worth considering. It’s noted for its exceptional service and great value for money. The award-winning Bali Health Lounge on George Street, meanwhile, prides itself on its highly trained therapists and provides a little place of tranquillity in the heart of the city. In all cases, booking in advance is advised as it can help reduce the cost.

Chill Factore

Hit the slopes, shops and climbing wall.

places to visit in manchester for couples

Chill Factore offers you the chance to hit the slopes for some skiing and snowboarding action in Manchester. The real snow centre in Trafford Park had the widest indoor slope in the world when it opened in 2007, reaching 330 ft across at its widest point. The main slope has a total length of 590 ft, but there are smaller and shorter slopes for different skill levels and unique challenges.

Between attempts on the slopes, you can enjoy snacks from a modest range of big-brand and boutique outlets. There’s also a good choice of shops nearby, a large amount of which sell outdoor and sportswear. The centre also has a climbing wall, for when you want to challenge other parts of your body.

Cocoa Cabana Chocolatier

Try the chocolate-themed afternoon tea.

places to visit in manchester for couples

When it comes to sweets for your sweet, you can’t go far wrong with Cocoa Cabana. Their hand-tempered treats are made from high-quality ingredients, which they transform into some really creative, award-winning sweets. Sure, you could buy a plain old chocolate slab or shard, but you could also get a chocolate skull, chocolate Buddha statue or chocolate pineapple. Some are even vegan-friendly.

For something a little more special, you could have a chocolate-themed afternoon tea. This includes all of the appropriate nibbles like sandwiches and scones, but also a chocolate tart, chocolate brownie, macaron, chocolate strawberry and your choice of tea, coffee or hot chocolate.

Manchester Cat Café

Have a purr-fect coffee date.

Manchester Cat Café is a café that contains cats... in Manchester. Having a nice cup of coffee and a cake while you chat with your partner is certainly a pleasant way to spend an hour or 2, but you can ramp up the cuteness of the experience by being surrounded by friendly felines throughout.

Hanging out at Manchester Cat Café is charged by the time you spend there, not by the drink. You pay per 5 minutes and the price isn’t too expensive. During that time, you can enjoy unlimited hot and cold drinks, though snacks cost extra. Gluten-free, nut-free and vegan options are available.

Location: 103 High St, Manchester M4 1HQ, UK

Harvey Nichols

Taste the champagne lifestyle.

Harvey Nichols is an iconic British department store, best known by its flagship store in Knightsbridge, London. The Manchester branch isn’t quite as big but is no less packed with luxury designer fashion. Expect to find brands from Armani to Zimmermann, with dozens of high-end British and international names in between.

It’s worth taking a trip up to the top floor and the bar and brasserie there, if you’re feeling peckish. The eggs benedict with champagne is a brunch with a bit of bite! The cocktails are also highly regarded.

First-class cocktails with a view

places to visit in manchester for couples

Manchester is famous for its nightlife, but Cloud 23 stands out as one of the most romantic. Located on the 23rd floor of the Beetham Tower, the views across the city from its floor-to-ceiling windows are fantastic. Inside, it’s got a luxurious contemporary design where you can relax with stylish music and exclusive cocktails.

Other than the view, it’s the cocktail menu that makes Cloud 23 worth the visit. It’s inspired by Manchester’s long history, with names going from AD 79 (containing vodka, bergamot and soda) to the 2010 Graphene (with vodka, sherry, almond syrup, black pepper and maple foam). There’s also a good choice of beers, wines, champagnes and soft drinks, as well as tasty snacks.

Location: Hilton Manchester Deansgate, Beetham Tower, 303 Deansgate, Manchester M3 4LQ, UK

Twenty Twenty Two

Try a little friendly competition.

places to visit in manchester for couples

For Manchester nightlife with a bit of a difference, Twenty Twenty Two certainly fits the bill. Its underground entrance and tiled walls give it the feel of a grungy bar or club. While it certainly has a good drinks selection and some great tunes, it’s the ping pong tables in the back room that most attract people.

Use of the tables is charged by the half-hour to make sure no one hogs them for too long, but the price is pretty reasonable. A little friendly competition certainly adds a new dynamic to a date, as well as a few laughs, making this a popular spot for couples.

Location: The Basement, Little Lever St, Manchester M1 1EZ, UK

Open: Monday–Wednesday from 4 pm to 12 pm, Thursday from 4 pm to 1 am, Friday from 4 pm to 3 am, Saturday from 1 pm to 3 am, Sunday from 1 pm to 10 pm

The city is known for its lively arts scene, and HOME has among the best facilities for showcasing it. This includes 5 cinemas, 2 theatres, 2 galleries, a general events space and rehearsal rooms.

You’ll also find an excellent restaurant at HOME, a couple of bars and a bookshop on site. There’s a busy calendar of events and performances all year round and ticket prices are very reasonable.

You’re guaranteed to have a laugh and keep busy for an hour or two here. The best part is, the two of you can visit for £20.

This one is ideal for couples who love a more fast paced thrill. Based under the Manchester arena car park Teamsport go karting will definitely bring out the competitive side of you. You can go as fast as 45mph in these feisty little go karts. The cost for this is a bit more on the expensive side at £35 each which includes 2x 15 minute race sessions.

Odeon Cinema

This is a very typical date night but it just has to be ticked off the list! The Odeon Cinema. It’s traditional and romantic so you really can’t go wrong. Lets not forget the irresistible Tango Ice Blast too! There’s some great films out at the moment including suicide squad 2 and old. Old is tense but has a great ending so definitely worth the watch. With tickets only £8 per person this is an affordable date night that you’re bound to enjoy.

Roxy ballroom

A great place for both date nights and something to do with your friends is Roxy Ballroom . With beer pong, shuffleboard, ping pong and more, you’re sure to have a good time here. The place is always booming with a great atmosphere and music. Perfect if you’re planning a night out and want somewhere to get started. You can book each game for around £6 with beer pong costing a little bit more due to paying for the additional cost of the alcohol. If you like the sound of fun activities whilst enjoying some delicious drinks, check out our Fun things to do in Manchester: Night time addition blog.

Next on our bucket list of Manchester date activities is NQ64 . Flash back to the 80s with retro video games and crafted cocktails- this place is the ideal first date. With two locations in the city in Deansgate and the Northern Quarter you have to try this popular unique spot in the city. It’s free to get into NQ64 so give it a try.

Manchester, UK, April 11, 2017: People are walking in the Gay village alongside Canal street in Manchester, England

Manchester is a famously queer-friendly city especially the village around Canal Street © trabantos / Getty Images

Mancunians are fiercely proud of their city. And rightly so as the ever-growing metropolis houses an impressive collection of attractions, with options to appease even the most cultured visitors.

It’s not just football and great music, either. Awesome art galleries, museums with free entry and all manner of festivals are possible contenders for your itinerary. Not sure where to start? Here’s just a snapshot of the best things to do in Manchester.

1. Go to a gig

The Madchester years may be over and the Haçienda long gone (or, rather, remodeled as a block of flats), but Manchester ’s musical spirit remains very much alive. The city has nurtured numerous bands over the years and still plays host to countless live music venues.

Attending a gig is easily one of the best things to do in Manchester at night. Band on the Wall and the Deaf Institute showcase an eclectic mix of up-and-coming acts, while the MEN Arena is the domain of globally renowned superstars. You could also treat your ears to free live jazz at friendly neighborhood bar Matt and Phreds or listen to classical masterpieces courtesy of the Hallé Orchestra at Bridgewater Hall .

Detour: The Science and Industry Museum's Turn It Up: The power of music exhibit lets visitors get hands-on with music making, with displays that include odd and groundbreaking instruments and a space to create your own masterpiece.

2. Explore the Northern Quarter

Manchester’s hippest neighborhood sits a stone’s throw from Piccadilly Gardens and offers numerous refreshing alternatives to the chain cafes and high street stores of nearby Market Street.

As well as being adorned with thought-provoking street art, the Northern Quarter’s red brick buildings are filled with vintage clothing shops, indie record stores and quirky themed bars.

Some of the best restaurants in Manchester can be found here, too. Head to Northern Soul Grilled Cheese for a cheap and indulgently cheesy lunch. You could also join the queue for a table at Aussie-run brunch spot, Federal , where great coffee is served alongside plates piled high with smashed avocado, grilled halloumi and freshly-baked sourdough toast.

Local tip: With lots of boutique hotels and situated in a convenient location, the Northern Quarter is also a good place to stay in Manchester.

An Arabic family, a father and son visiting the The National Football Museum - using interactive exhibits about the game of soccer and its history.

3. Indulge your inner football fan

Manchester is the home of not one, but two legendary football teams. Whether your loyalties lie with Manchester City or Manchester United , you’ll find much to entertain you at the National Football Museum . Tucked behind the cathedral, it’s the biggest museum of its kind and one of the most popular attractions in Manchester.

Local Tip: Rather see a ball being kicked across the pitch? The Premier League season kicks off in early September, with matches hosted at both the Etihad Stadium and Old Trafford. Pick up tickets for as little as £20 or go inside Old Trafford during a private stadium tour.

4. Tick off some museums

There’s no shortage of ways to spend a day in Manchester. With no fewer than ten museums located within the city limits, it’s an excellent place to expand your knowledge on a range of different subjects.

Learn about the Suffragette Movement at the Pankhurst Centre or uncover the city’s natural history at the Manchester Museum . The Imperial War Museum North in Salford Quays is as educational and evocative as its London counterpart.

Visiting with kids? The Science and Industry Museum is hands down one of the best things to do in Manchester as a family. It’s lodged inside the oldest railway terminus in the world and has some brilliant interactive exhibits, including astronaut virtual reality experiences for wannabe space explorers.

A couple walking along the balconies past book stacks in the galleries in the historic Reading Room in John Rylands Library, part of the University of Manchester.

5. John Rylands Library

The John Rylands Library – with its Gothic facade and dramatic interiors that wouldn’t look out of place in a Sherlock Holmes mystery – is more than just a giant storehouse for rare books. It’s stood on the same spot on Deansgate since the 1890s and is probably the city’s most impressive heritage site.

A visit to the library is one of the best things to do in Manchester, whether you’re a certified bookworm or not. Entry is free and it’ll take you less than an hour to admire its wood-paneled reading rooms, sweeping stone staircases and glass cases filled with fading, antique papyrus.

6. Eat your way around the city

If you take away one piece of advice, let it be this: always come to Manchester with an appetite. The city has some serious culinary credentials, spanning Michelin-starred fine dining to vegan-friendly fast food. Mouth-watering global cuisine is always on the menu, too.

Ancoats (the Northern Quarter’s equally cool neighbor) is Manchester’s unofficial Little Italy and where you’ll be able to gorge on stonebaked pizza and other carb-heavy delights. For fragrant ramen and delectable dim sum, the brightly decorated restaurants of Chinatown are your best bet.

Local Tip: Searching for a cozy Sunday lunch spot? Book a table at Sam’s Chop House . It’s one of the best pubs in Manchester and still has the same moody Victorian decor as it did when it opened in 1868.

7. Check out the city’s craft beer scene

Manchester is swiftly catching up with the capital when it comes to craft beer. A good chunk of its breweries (many of them with onsite bars) lie a short walk from Manchester Piccadilly station. This includes trendy Cloudwater Brewing Co and the slightly more rustic Alphabet Brewing Company.

Detour: Prefer a G&T? The Manchester Gin distillery behind the Odeon Great Northern offers terrific tasting tours.

8. Hit up a market

Sucker for a good market? Manchester has plenty. Foodies will be thoroughly satisfied with the treats on offer at Altrincham Market and Mackie Mayor in the Northern Quarter. If it's vintage treasures you’re seeking, make a beeline for eclectic Afflecks on Church Street. There’s also the Didsbury Maker’s Market – an emporium of locally made gifts and crafts – which sets up shop just off Burton Road on the last Sunday of every month.

Cold early spring evening at Salford Quays, Manchester. On the foot bridge by MediaCity UK looking towards the Imperial War Museum North.

9. Salford Quays

Looking for things to do outside Manchester City Center? Hop on the tram and head for Salford Quays. The modern waterfront district is on the site of the former Manchester Docks and serves as the home of the BBC and ITV in the North. You’ll spot their studio buildings in the aptly named MediaCityUK .

Directly opposite is The Quays, a shopping, dining and entertainment complex. Within it is the Lowry , one of the top-performing arts centers in the region, and Salford Water Sports Centre where you can hire paddleboards or kayaks to explore the surrounding canals.

10. Attend one of Manchester’s many festivals

No matter the season , there’s bound to be a festival to take your fancy. Mancunians love to celebrate, whether that’s by heading en masse to Heaton Park for the Parklife music festival or by lining the streets of the Gay Village for the annual Pride parade.

You could also enjoy avant-garde film screenings and immersive performance art at the biannual Manchester International Festival or join in with the Lunar New Year festivities in Manchester’s Chinatown in early February.

People Swimming in the Men's First Class Pool at Victoria Baths in Manchester, which is having an open swim day to raise funds for restoration work

11. Take a dip at Victoria Baths

This early Edwardian swimming pool turned cultural events venue is worth trekking up Oxford Road for. Victoria Baths first opened in 1906, and it’s managed to retain its period beauty. Original tiles cover the walls of the entrance hall, while powder blue changing cubicles with red and white striped curtains line the edge of the female baths.

The long-term goal is to refurbish it as a public pool and Turkish bath. For now, though, Victoria Baths is open for tours between March and September.

Local tip: Various events are held throughout the year too, including the Vintage Home Show in June and a pop-up festive cinema in December.

12. Embark on an art-themed tour of the city

Art fanatics will be in their element in Manchester. The Whitworth Art Gallery ’s collections are vast and include prints by Renoir and Cezanne, as well as a room dedicated entirely to wonderfully colorful wallpaper.

Back in the city center, Manchester Art Gallery is a haven for fine art aficionados and usually has a fantastic temporary modern art exhibition. You could also browse bold works with hefty price tags at Castle Fine Art Gallery on King Street.

Local tip: After a unique date idea? Leisurely uncovering the street art of the Northern Quarter and Ancoats – preferably with a coffee in hand – is one of our top things to do in Manchester as a couple.

places to visit in manchester for couples

John Rylands Library John Rylands Library free

The University of Manchester's John Rylands Library is known as much for its beautiful architecture as it is for its collection of rare books and manuscripts. The impressive Gothic structure took 10 years to build and opened to the public in 1900. Among its vast collection are a fragment of Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" manuscript, as well as the personal letters and papers of writers, military generals and more. There is even a papyrus fragment of the Gospel of John from the Bible. The fragment is believed to be the earliest part of any New Testament writing ever found.

Recent visitors said that the architecture is stunning, likening it to a scene out of the world of "Harry Potter." Though tripods and flash photography are not allowed, reviewers suggested snapping several photos of the interior (with no flash). Others recommended a stop in the restroom to have a look at the Victorian toilets, which have remained largely unchanged since 1900.

Manchester Art Gallery Manchester Art Gallery free

Established in 1823, the Manchester Art Gallery boasts a collection of more than 25,000 items that has been collected over a period of 200 years. Of particular note is its pre-Raphaelite collection. There is also a costume collection of dress from the 1600s to present day. Families with younger children will appreciate the museum's explorer tool belts with binoculars, magnifying glasses and more items. Plus, visitors can refuel in two on-site cafes.

Recent visitors said the museum is a great spot to see beautiful, romantic paintings and well worth a stop. Many also recommended indulging in a cake at the cafe.

Old Trafford Old Trafford

Manchester United is one of the – if not the – world's most celebrated football (aka soccer) teams. The team's stadium is even nicknamed the "Theatre of Dreams." Picture a sea of red shirt-wearing fans spread across an oblong stadium cheering madly for a much-beloved bunch of talented athletes. Even if you don't get to watch the team (and the boisterous crowd) in action, you should make time for a guided tour of the stadium. The 80-minute tour takes you everywhere from the locker rooms to the tunnel where the players emerge onto the field and more.

Recent visitors advised there is a lot of walking and stairs to climb on the tour and recommended arriving an hour before your tour begins. Others said the tour is great even for non-football fans and highly recommended visiting the museum.

Royal Exchange Theatre Royal Exchange Theatre

The Royal Exchange Theatre is known for its compelling stage layout: None of the seats are more than 30 feet from the seven-sided stage. It's also known for its impressive performances, which range from Shakespearean plays to modern works. What's more, the building used to house a different kind of production: It was the site of the city's cotton trade, which closed in 1968. Some of the remnants of the exchange remain, including the original trading board with the day's closing numbers.

Past visitors praised the building's architecture and atmosphere, saying it's a great venue to see a show. Many also recommended visiting the theater's cafe.

Whitworth Art Gallery Whitworth Art Gallery free

Part of the University of Manchester, the Whitworth Art Gallery's mission is to "use art for social change." It was originally founded in 1889 to educate and inspire Manchester citizens. It houses a collection of some 60,000 works, though the museum says it has nothing on permanent display. Rather it rotates exhibitions, pulling from its collection with themes ranging from tapestries to wallpaper to Cezanne.

Past visitors described the Whitworth Art Gallery as a "great surprise" with an eclectic mix of both historic and contemporary artwork. Others warned that the more well-known paintings were on loan and that the space only had largely unknown modern art. Another positive that many visitors pointed out is the cafe.

Past visitors say the museum has lots of interactive exhibits, but warn that there are a lot of stairs. Reviewers also said the museum staff is friendly and that the museum is a great attraction for football fans.

Manchester Cathedral, which dates back to the 15th century, has been through numerous conflicts and suffered damage both in World War II, as well as from an Irish Republican Army bomb in 1996. You'll want to take time to see the "Angel Stone," a stone found embedded in the structure that dates to 700. Also worth a look are the wooden carvings of medieval tales and legends under the seats of the quire stalls and the remains of a medieval bridge in the visitor center.

Past visitors said the cathedral is a beautiful building with fantastic stained-glass windows. Other said it's worth a visit even if you're not a religious person.

Though it’s not typically the first destination in England to spring to mind for a city break, planning a weekend in Manchester itinerary is never a bad idea if you’d like to explore this northern metropolis.

Manchester typifies the changes that many of the larger northern English cities have undergone in recent decades. Economies heavily reliant on forms of industrial practice have seen those practices necessarily replaced, revitalising and breathing new life into what was once abandoned.

Modern Manchester leaves behind clues to its strong industrial heritage but has blended these together with culture, sport and a vibrant food and drink scene. Whether you only have a day to devote to the city or are planning to spend two or more, there is no denying that the city has a lot to offer visitors.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Manchester?

Before jumping in to planning your trip to this Northern English city, you may be wondering how many days to spend in Manchester.

As a thriving metropolis, it can be tough to put a definitive number on this when considering just multi-faceted this city is, but plan to spend at least 2 days in Manchester if you’re keen to see all of the top sites and really get a feel for the city.

If you have a bit more time to play around with, then spending 3 days in Manchester is not a bad idea. There are lots of great things to do in the city that can easily occupy 3 full days. Alternatively, you could use an extra day to go on a day trip to visit somewhere in the surrounding area.

When to Visit Manchester

“It always rains in Manchester,” so they say, and although there may be some substance to the phrase, in reality, the weather should not put huge limitations on your visit. The city and Northwest, in general, is warmest in mid- to late- summer with the average high temperature in degrees Celsius of around the low 20s (low 70s Fahrenheit).

These months coincide with the school summer holidays so expect museums and attractions to be at their busiest. Yes, it is wet often, with just over 40% of days seeing some kind of rainfall and average temperatures in winter falling to about 4-5°C (39-41°F).

The English football season runs from August through to May, which could well mean accommodation becoming more scarce on match days when either of the two Manchester teams, United and City, are playing a home fixture.

Festivals are staged throughout the year, with summer hosting the most and biggest events such as the Parklife Festival, Manchester’s biggest music festival and Sounds of the City, which draws some big-name bands and artists.

Christmas Markets, an idea taken from continental Europe, are becoming an increasingly popular feature in English towns and cities. Manchester’s version starts in early November with over 300 stalls selling food, drink and gifts.

Manchester’s Chinatown is the third-largest in Europe, so it’ll come as no surprise that Lunar New Year is a big deal, with celebrations taking place over a period of days throughout.

Getting To & Around Manchester

Manchester is a major transport hub in the North West, therefore getting to the city from both within the UK and further afield should not be a significant issue.

The airport is the largest outside of London and caters for a lengthy list of international destinations. It has its own stop on the Metrolink tram service and a train station with services that run to the city centre every 10 minutes, 7 days a week.

In addition, there is the option to travel on the 24-hour bus. With most of these methods, it should take around the 30-minute mark to get between the airport and the city centre. Additionally, Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport is about an hour’s drive from Manchester.

The city has three main train stations- Manchester Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria. These provide regional and national train links. Click here to see train timetables for your journey .

The three are connected by a free bus service.  Yes, you can travel between the three for free, which is a slogan Network Rail or the Manchester Tourist Board can have if they happen to be reading this.

Several motorways connect to the M60 which acts as the Manchester ring road. National Express and Megabus operate from Chorlton Street coach station and provide national coverage. Click here to see bus timetables for your journey .

The Metrolink tram system should make getting around Manchester relatively easy, especially in conjunction with public buses that cover the Greater Manchester Area. The free bus mentioned earlier that connects the main train stations can also be ‘hopped on’ and ‘hopped off’ at the main shopping and business areas.

A pass is available in the form of a System One Travelcard for durations lasting 1, 7 and 28 days or a year. This allows unlimited travel on the tram, train or bus, or a combination of the 3, depending on which is purchased.

Manchester — and the city centre, in particular — is pedestrian-friendly, with local ‘City Hosts’ on hand to assist visitors with queries regarding most things tourist and it also considers itself cycle friendly, with routes and lanes that criss-cross the central areas and lead out to its environs.

Travellers spending a weekend in Manchester should find plenty of choice when it comes to hiring a car with Rentalcars.com aggregating choices from the major providers.

The city centre advertises itself as having thousands of parking spaces with some parking firms offering a pre-booking service allowing reservations in advance. If coming from London, there are also a number of great stops to consider along the way.

2-Day Manchester Itinerary

If you seek to discover more about the place’s history and heritage, sporting significance- in essence, what Manchester has given to the world, then use the following as ideas and aides to populate your trip.

Day 1 – Museums & the Northern Quarter

History meets the newer, trendier side on day 1 of your 2 days in Manchester. If football’s not your thing or time is tight, then ditch the National Football Museum, perhaps for one of the suggestions in the ‘Have More Time?’ section, or spend longer exploring the Northern Quarter.

If the weather’s good in summer, a late afternoon and evening in Castlefield would round off the day well.

Science and Industry Museum

For those wanting to discover more about the city’s strong ties to the dawn of the Industrial Revolution during their weekend in Manchester, the Science and Industry Museum is a good place to start. Located in the heart of the city, the museum tells the story of the growth of industry and the development of technology with a Manchester-based narrative.

It’s always more rewarding to see and experience ‘the real thing’ as opposed to photos, drawings or models, and here that is provided in the form of the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station with its accompanying collection of steam engines.

This is particularly poignant considering the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR) was the first inter-city railway in the world. The museum has age wide appeal with interactive stands and demonstrations. It is free to enter and enjoy.

Those who aren’t particularly interested in this museum may find John Rylands Library worthwhile instead. Otherwise, there is also the nearby Manchester Art Gallery.

Turing Statue

Now for a quick stop in Sackville Park to admire the statue dedicated to famed codebreaker and mathematician Alan Turing. Turing’s work at Bletchley Park enabled the cracking of the German Naval Enigma code, which many believe helped shorten World War II by years, saving countless lives.

He later took his own life by (allegedly) eating a poisoned apple — the bitten fruit becoming the logo of Apple Inc. and a tribute to the man recognised as the father of the computer age. Turing’s link to Manchester is due to the fact that during the early post-war years, he taught at the city’s university.

The Northern Quarter

The decline of much of the heavy industry and manufacturing that was the mainstay of Manchester’s economy left parts of the city derelict and thousands unemployed, a story repeated across the cities of the North during the late 20 th Century.

Many of these areas have been subject to urban regeneration projects that have attracted new businesses and crowds.

The Northern Quarter of Manchester is one such example. Among the red brick buildings and street art one will find an eclectic, alternative mix of trendy independent retail outlets and a diverse range of cafés, bars and restaurants.

Piccadilly Gardens on the edge of the Northern Quarter

National Football Museum

The North West is proud of its footballing heritage as well as its industrial one, which makes it an ideal location for the National Football Museum . It’s not just for football supporters and lovers of the game (although I expect falling into one those categories probably helps), as the social and cultural impacts of the sport are also considered and explored.

There’s plenty of memorabilia to cast your eye over, notably the Jules Rimet World Cup Trophy won by England in 1966.

The Manchester Cathedral is located only a short distance from the museum, as well, for those with no interest in football or if this is something you’d also like to visit.

Day 2 – Stockport & Salford Quays

The second part of your 48 hours in Manchester concerns a look at the city during World War II in the form of the Stockport Air Raid Shelters, plus time at the renowned Salford Quays for more war, alongside art, shopping and eating. There’s about an hour’s travel time between them, hence the second day only comprising of the two suggestions.

If you don’t fancy travelling to Stockport or the shelters aren’t your thing, then consider the Gin Experience at The City of Manchester Distillery in the north of the city, to sample something a little different.

Stockport Air Raid Shelters

Ever wondered what it must have been like in a World War II air raid shelter? No? Oh, alright then, but if you change your mind and happen to be in the Stockport side of Manchester, then the Stockport Air Raid shelters could well be up your street – both literally and metaphorically.

This award-winning museum consists of a mile-long series of underground tunnels that have been recreated to give the look and feel of life in them during the 1940s.

Displays recount the personal stories of some of the several thousand locals who at one time or another, would have spent periods sheltering from German attacks beneath the city. There is a small entry fee for adults, with children under 16 free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Salford Quays

Around a 15-minute tram journey from the city centre is one of Manchester’s, and indeed the North West’s, major entertainment centres, Salford Quays.

The Quays are found towards the end of the famed Manchester Ship Canal, and in the summer it’s even possible to take the ferry all the way to Liverpool , though the journey does take some 5 hours.

Within Salford Quays itself, it’s possible to visit the Imperial War Museum North, which has thousands of objects on display including a historically significant First World War field gun and even some remnant of what was once the World Trade Center.

If art is more your thing, then perhaps spend your time in the award-winning building that is the Lowry Art Complex. These attractions are within walking distance and supplemented with a range of dining and shopping facilities.

Salford Quays

Have More Time?

If the weekend in Manchester just simply isn’t long enough and you’re thinking of extending your stay to 3 days in Manchester or more, then the following may appeal:

The People’s History Museum could be well worth considering for those with an interest in the history of democracy, particularly from a British angle.  Families need not necessarily be put off by the subject matter as the museum has won an award for being child and family-friendly.

If the weather’s good, or at least abates, then 20 minutes from Salford Quays by public transport and about 5 from the Science and Industry Museum on foot, lies Castlefield. It’s not a castle as such, nor a field, but a real mix of old and new- old in the form of a Roman fort and some mills, alongside new outdoor, canal side bars and restaurants.

A relatively recent addition to the Manchester ‘to-do’ list is the multi-award-winning Gin Experience at The City of Manchester Distillery. Take a tour, learn about the gin-making process, sample the goods and dabble in creating your own unique beverage over the course of 3 hours.

Both of Manchester’s Premier League clubs, Manchester City and Manchester United , offer tours of their grounds (The Etihad and Old Trafford) with the usual stops included such as the dressing rooms, pitch and dugouts.

The port city of Liverpool is a mere hour away by car and makes for a great option for a day trip from Manchester. Famed for its iconic waterfront, being the birthplace of The Beatles and Anfield stadium, the home of the 6 times European Champions, Liverpool FC.

Manchester is well situated for a visit to two of England’s national parks. Both the Peak District and Lake District are about an hour-and-a-half’s drive away with the natural splendour of hills, lakes and mountains to enjoy. You can view day trip options here .

The seven most romantic places in Manchester city centre to visit this Valentine's Day

Here are the sites we recommend you go to to celebrate your love

places to visit in manchester for couples

It’s that time of the year again.

Hopeless romantics are ordering in flowers, chocolates and teddies for their partners to express their unwavering devotion this Valentine's Day.

But where is best to celebrate your love with someone special — or to kick-start a new romance — in Manchester city centre?

While the city might not evoke quite the same romantic imagery as Venice, or Paris, it does have some beautiful spots. There are places where you can go for a romantic stroll, grab a fancy drink, or just watch the world go by with the one you love.

READ MORE: Best free things to do in Manchester in 2023

So here are seven romantic spots in Manchester city centre to head to this Valentine’s Day — where’s your favourite? Have we missed one? Tell us in the comments.

Castlefield Bridge

Take in a slice of Venetian waterway wonder on the canals. Castlefield Bridge connects one side of the neighbourhood to the area, which is bisected by various canals.

From here, you can wander over to Salford Quays, if you so wish, or walk towards Oxford Street in town. There are also plenty of bars around if you want to grab a drink or a bite to eat — plus the Saul Hay Gallery to take in some art.

What’s more, the bridge provides some fantastic views of the city’s skyline, and also there are a smattering of love locks around. It’s free to wander around, and can be as long or as short as you like.

places to visit in manchester for couples

One of the most impressive aspects of the skyline around Castlefield is the looming Beetham Tower. Completed in 2006, it was once Manchester’s tallest building.

It also features the Cloud23 cocktail bar and lounge, which has impressive views of the city. As the name suggests, it’s 23 storeys up, so the perfect place to witness a winter’s sunset.

You could also make a night of it by staying in the Hilton Hotel inside the tower. With it being situated on Deansgate, there’s plenty to do and see just a short walk away.

places to visit in manchester for couples

St John’s Gardens

Just off Deansgate is St John’s Gardens. A small park, it is an oasis of green in the hubbub of the city.

This is the best place for couples who want a low-key celebration, but one which is right for them. You can take a small walk around the gardens, or sit and chat on one of its benches.

St John’s also has a sizeable pigeon population, so you can feed them, too. Nothing says romance like a bit of pigeon feeding after all. If it's unseasonably warm you could even have a picnic.

places to visit in manchester for couples

Castlefield Viaduct (after February 18)

The viaduct is now home to the National Trust’s park in the skies. It’s free to visit, but only opens the Saturday after Valentine’s Day.

When it does re-open, you can either take a guided tour or pop up from 1pm for as long as you like. It’s packed full of flora and fauna, including some community gardens.

One of those is from a group called Sow The City, which has installed a pond to provide a space for reflection. There’s also an inside space, should you get chilly.

places to visit in manchester for couples

This is another bar with jaw-dropping views across town. 20 Stories is, confusingly, on the 19th floor of No.1 Spinningfields.

The bar/restaurant has an outdoor terrace with geo-desic pods to keep you warm. It also has brilliant views over the city, especially looking over the ever-changing skyline.

It’s a great place if you feel like being fancy, and want to watch the world go by. The sunset over Manchester will look best from here.

places to visit in manchester for couples

Mayfield Park

Last Valentine’s Day, Mayfield Park wasn’t open to the public — so if you get your skates on, you could be one of the first couples in on the big day. It features the Medlock running through it, so you’ll have some tranquillity.

But — and this is one for couples with kids — it’s got a really, really good play area. Seven slides are a delight for little ones, especially the one which goes over the river.

That means you can leave them playing and have a heart-to-heart, all while marvelling at the life you have built together. There are also loads of places to eat and drink next door in Escape to Freight Island.

places to visit in manchester for couples

New Islington Marina

Not too far away and a similar idea, New Islington Marina is a great place to watch the world go by with loved ones. Narrowboats form a lovely back drop to wander around Cotton Field Park.

It’s got some wonderful cafes and restaurants, too. Pollen makes lovely coffee, Cask is perfect for beer-lovers, and Flawd has some of the best food available in the city.

The brilliant thing about the Marina is that it’s yours to enjoy. Spend five minutes or five hours there, you’ll be pleased you went.

8. See How Much Heat you can Handle Down Curry Mile

Test your limits at The Curry Mile in Manchester.

A local fan favorite, seeing just how much spice you can handle is a must-do activity and being able to withstand the heat becomes a source of pride!!

Nicknamed the Curry Mile, the part of Wilmslow Road that runs through the center of Rusholme is one of the most popular things to do in Manchester for tourists and locals alike! The many restaurants (both South Asian and Middle eastern) are known for the spiciness as well as their deliciousness and are frequently busy into the early morning.

With as many as 70 restaurants within half a mile, it’s one of the best things to do in Manchester’s city center. The Curry Mile has warmed the hearts and stomachs of many a Mancunian! To get here, take a bus from Picadilly headed for Chorlton, Didsury or the airport. Or, you can walk if you have 25 minutes and some energy spare!

9. Find and enjoy Manchester’s Best Hidden Gem, The Washroom

This is the type of hidden gem travelers dream of!

One of the most unique things to do in Manchester is visit The Washroom. If you were to just pass by, you may think that this was just another laundromat. With a little bit of investigation, you’ll be shocked to discover one of the coolest hidden bars in the UK!

The washing machine against the wall is more door than washing machine and to get a drink you need only hit the button on a nearby phone. When someone answers, let them know you’re there to “do a load”.

After that, you’re on your own!

The UK is one of the safest countries in the world and there isn’t much for travelers to worry about. However, like any city you need to take certain precautions. The city does have a homless and drug problem so do not leave valuables unattended, avoid lonely areas after dark and take care around the Salford area after dark. Bike theft is endemic, if you bring a bike, leave it in public places, use a good lock, secure the wheels and don’t leave it out overnight.

There have been a few terrorist and knife attacks in Manchester but these are rare.

The biggest safety issue is perhaps drunken anti-social behaviour. Keep your head about you when out in bars especially on a Friday and Saturday nigh and you will be fine.

This hotel is on Oxford Street just moments away from Manchester Oxford Road train station and The Palace Theatre.

This hotel is set within an impressive terracotta Victorian building with many of its original features still intact.

The same person who designed the Manchester Town Hall, Alfred Waterhouse, designed the Kimpton Clocktower.

The rooms feel classy, yet there’s a definite historical feel to them.

Perhaps it’s the wooden panelling or four poster beds in some rooms, it’s the perfect blend between old and new.

The hotel offers complimentary wine or beer for guests between 5pm and 6pm at their social hour.

They also offer excellent food and drink options at The Refuge by Volta, their dining room and bar space.

It’s a popular spot so be sure to book in advance.

Midland Hotel in Central Manchester

❤️Reviews : 8.4 / 10 – See all reviews here.

📍 Location: St Peter’s Square

In terms of services, they’ve got everything you need at The Midlands.

There is a bar and restaurant, a sauna steam room, a hot tub and a small pool.

dakota hotel manchester

❤️Reviews : 9.4 / 10 – See all reviews here.

📍 Location: Near Piccadilly Station

The Dakota Manchester hotel is on Ducie Street, close to the Rochdale Canal Tow Path and around 10 minutes walk from Manchester Piccadilly.

This might be a chain hotel with Dakota being the fifth in the hotel collection but it feels more personable owing to the friendly and knowledgeable local staff.

The hotel’s interior is moody but romantic with an old-school style. An elegant fireplace welcomes you in the lobby and old armchairs are there for you to enjoy after a long journey.

The rooms have a similar moody yet romantic vibe with the most comfortable beds. Though most bedrooms have walk-in showers, some have decadent free-standing bathtubs.

Dakota’s Grill restaurant and bar serves up classic dishes to a high standard. For extra romance and lavishness head to the champagne room.

6 – The Lowry Hotel

❤️Reviews : 8.7 / 10 – See all reviews here.

📍 Location: Salford

The Lowry Hotel is next to the River Irwell and 15 minutes walk to the National Football Museum and 20 minutes to the Northern Quarter.

The rooms are bigger than many Manchester hotel rooms and decorated mainly with neutral tones with a few splashes of colour.

The first floor of the hotel is home to the River Restaurant and Bar. Dine inside or on the terrace if the sun is out.

Though the hotel is classy and high-end the restaurant has more of a relaxed feel.

Other hotel facilities include a small gym and the Elemis spa which offers a relaxation room, eight treatment rooms and a sauna.

7 – Stock Exchange Hotel

📍 Location: Near Market Street

One of the most romantic hotels in Manchester is the Stock Exchange Hotel on Norfolk Street.

This five-star hotel is just a short walk from King Street where there are many shops and restaurants.

Cultural spots like the Manchester Art Gallery and the Royal Exchange Theatre are super close, about five minutes walk.

Opened in 1906, the Stock Exchange building is steeped in history and there’s something about its exterior that makes you feel like you are stepping into a 20 th -century romance novel.

Domed ceilings and marble columns only add to the atmosphere once inside.

The rooms are also beautifully decorated, clean, pristine and not a single cushion or shampoo bottle is out of place.

8 – Didsbury House Hotel

❤️Reviews : 9.0 / 10 – See all reviews here.

📍 Location: Didsbury

You guessed it, this hotel is in a house and yes, it’s in Didsbury.

Didsbury is a southern Manchester suburb and though you may feel like you’re a bit out of the way for a visit to Manchester, Didsbury provides that peace that city dwellers might just be longing for.

If you still want to be close to the city then the Didsbury Village Metrolink is just 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

Being located in a house you definitely feel the comfort of home with the pizzazz and luxury of a hotel.

They’ve got a spa and offer a range of beauty treatments.

Whilst at the Didsbury House Hotel you should definitely visit the Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens, they are beautiful especially in late spring and early summer.

9 – Hotel Gotham

Hotel Gotham in Manchester

📍 Location: King Street

Hotel Gotham is a five-star hotel on King Street.

The shops on King Street and Market Street are just moments away and places like the Manchester Art Gallery are just a five minute walk away.

The outside of the building seems ominous in all its Art Deco glory but step inside and you’ll feel the romance.

You might think you’ve stepped into a 1920s movie and you and your partner are the stars of the show.

At first glance the rooms are simple but take a further look and you will find the devil is in the details.

Lavish furry throws are draped on the beds and rouge red sofas give an unapologetically flirty touch to the room.

Whilst there isn’t a spa or gym, their restaurant Honey reminds you to indulge and enjoy yourself.

The menu may be small but the dishes are highly creative and perfectly presented.

This hotel is bold and ideal for those looking for cinematic romance.

The modern style and stylish aesthetic are incredibly pleasing to the eye and perfect for a romantic night’s stay.

In the rooms, they’ve kept many of the original beams and exposed walls making for a quirky and creative space.

Their priority seems to be large beds, which are super comfy.

Alan’s restaurant and bar serves up a variety of light bites, small plates and hearty meat dishes.

Excellent service, amazing facilities, great views and a brand you can trust is a great combination for a romantic getaway.

13 – Velvet Hotel, Bar & Brasserie

Velvet Hotel in Manchester Gay Village

❤️Reviews : 8.6 / 10 – See all reviews here.

Another of the best hotels in Manchester for couples is Velvet Hotel .

This hotel is on the vibrant pedestrianised Canal Street in Manchester’s Gay Village.

It’s also within walking distance of the Northern Quarter bars and restaurants as well as Manchester Piccadilly train station .

This hotel is romantic for a myriad of reasons, not least because of its boutique-style finishes .

There’s such a uniqueness to every room, some are decked out with extravagantly carved bed frames, whilst others have gothic musical references, oversized bathtubs and statement wallpaper.

You will certainly feel a million miles away from normal life staying in this hotel.

If you are a couple of foodies, you must try their restaurants ‘Mr White’s English Chophouse. This restaurant falls under Marco Pierre White’s hospitality brand.

14 – Abel Heywood Boutique Hotel

Abel Heywood Hotel in Manchester

📍 Location: Northern Quarter

If one of your priorities for the best hotels in Manchester for couples is for a great location then try Abel Heywood Boutique Hotel .

This hotel is located on Turner Street in the popular northern Quarter area of Manchester.

The hotel is surrounded by great shops, eateries and bars. If you want to be in the thick of it there’s no better place to stay.

The hotel is named after a Manchester publisher and mayor of the city during the 1800s.

He published a series of guidebooks on different UK holiday destinations and fittingly each room in the hotel is named after one of those books .

You’ll find that the pub is on the ground floor and head up to the first floor where you’ll find the gin bar. There’s also an on-site restaurant.

Because of its location, the rooms aren’t super spacious but they are cosy and comfortable.

One of the nice touches is that there are nods to Manchester’s history throughout the rooms.

15 – YOTEL Manchester Deansgate

YOTEL is on the corner of John Dalton Street and Deansgate.

This hotel is right by the popular Spinningfields and attractions like the John Rylands Library and close to the main shops.

This is one of the city’s more affordable hotels but it’s still bursting with colour and character making it a unique place for couples to stay.

Couples with conscious environmental minds will appreciate the natural toiletries and recycled plastic bottle bedsheets.

Seemingly bland white walls and ceilings are given a splash of colour with pink headboards and teal bed frames.

Some of the facilities on offer at this hotel include a gym called Trib3. Why not book a fitness class to try together!

📍 Location: Piccadilly

The Malmaison Manchester is right by Manchester Piccadilly train station. It’s just over a five-minute walk to Manchester’s Northern Quarter and the Gay Village.

This hotel makes for an ultra-modern couples’ getaway in Manchester.

There’s a black, white and red theme going on, with a chess board-esque tile floor in the lobby and red chairs in the dining room.

You can really feel pampered with a visit to Malmaison.

There’s a small spa with treatment rooms, a peaceful zen lounge and a nail bar. Why not treat that special person in your life?

Chez Mal, the hotel’s bar is popular with locals as well as guests, which is a testament to its quality if locals go there.

Definitely ask for their latest cocktail suggestions as they are known for serving some of the best boozy drinks in the area.

17 – Whitworth Locke

Whitworth Locke Hotel in Manchester

Another of Manchester’s Princess Street hotels is Whitworth Locke . This hotel is in the Gay Village area of Manchester, just 5 minute’s walk from the Oxford Road train station.

The Alan Turing Memorial is a couple of streets over and the Manchester Art Gallery is a five-minute walk away.

This ultra-cool hotel is housed within three former mills.

The pink peach colour scheme feels soft and romantic and the ample room space is much appreciated after a long day of Manchester sightseeing (no shuffling around each other trying to get to the bathroom).

Guests love the cheery and helpful staff who are always willing to go above and beyond to offer recommendations.

Tell them you’re visiting for a date or anniversary and they might even make it extra special for you.

We hope you enjoyed all these recommendations of hotels for couples in Manchester. We wish you a lovely romantic getaway in our beautiful city!

30 Things To Do In Manchester You Need To Try Before You Die

From visiting iconic landmarks in the city to sipping cocktails high above, enjoying a spot of culture and shopping, these are the best things to do in Manchester to add to your list.

Alice Lorenzato-Lloyd

Manchester is absolutely bursting with exciting activities to get involved in , but it’s not always that easy to choose the best things to do. Plus, when you’ve lived in a city for quite some time you can be guilty of doing the same old things and only scratching the surface of what Manchester has to offer.

We’ve rallied up the team’s suggestions of some of the best things you need to do in Manchester and have put them all here in this article for you to peruse at your leisure. So, without further ado, here’s a round-up of the best things to do in Manchester you’ve got to try at least once in your life. Of course, we’re always open to suggestions, so if you think we haven’t covered your favourite bucket list activity, then give us a shout!

1. Tuck into delicious dishes from Manchester’s top food halls

Manchester is home to some tasty spots meaning you’re never too far from your next meal. From Mackie Mayor to Society , GRUB to brand new Kargo MKT at Salford Quays, the street food choices are endless as you can take your pick from a range of delicious cuisines . 2. Go on a night out to the Warehouse Project

warehouse-project-lights-rave

The music scene is thriving in Manchester but one spot for a great club night in the city has to be the Warehouse Project . Taking place in the huge Depot Mayfield behind Piccadilly station, the event hosts a wide selection of DJs and musicians to soundtrack your night out. The Haçienda used to be the top music destination, but some might say the Warehouse Project is it’s top predecessor in the city.

3. Wander around the Maker’s Market in both the city centre and suburbs

places to visit in manchester for couples

Every month, multiple areas in and around Manchester city centre play host to the Maker’s Market where you’ll find everything from plants to paintings, beaded jewellery to baked goods. Found in locations such as the Northern Quarter, Ancoats, Didsbury, Chorlton, MediaCity and Sale, independent traders can vary but it’s a really wholesome way to spend your weekend supporting local businesses .

4. Go vintage shopping in the Northern Quarter

Manchester’s Northern Quarter is a hub for vintage finds and one spot in the area that is a must-visit is institution Afflecks . The shopping emporium has been open for over 40 years and boasts multiple floors filled with independent traders selling everything from second-hand garms to vinyls, a LGBTQ+ bookshop and a store dedicated to all things Manchester, you can get lost in here for hours. The Northern Quarter also has a number of vintage clothing shops like Pop Boutique and Blue Rinse worth browsing too.

5. Enjoy cocktails overlooking the city skyline

Manchester is great but higher up, even better. Sipping cocktails and soaking up fantastic views of the city has got to be one of the best things to do in Manchester, especially on a warm, sunny day. Treat yourself and watch the world go by from above from rooftop bars and restaurants like Cloud 23 , King Street Townhouse , Climat and 20 Stories , and you’ll feel like you’re on cloud nine.

6. Practice your skiing skills at Chill Factore

places to visit in manchester for couples

Can’t afford a ski trip to the Alps? Luckily you can take to the slopes right here in Manchester and it’s a fun day out with friends and family. Boasting 180 metres of real snow , the Chill Factore at Trafford City is the UK’s longest indoor ski slope and allows you to ski or snowboard on a massive indoor slope (perfect for those rainy days in Manchester) and is a great experience for both frequent skiers and beginners. You can also enjoy some apres-ski action in the Alpine Street, where there are a number of bars, cafes and restaurants.

7. Take on the Slattery’s Chocolate Challenge

slattery-chocolate-challenge-cake-in-centre-with-tarts-whipped-cream-and-ice-cream-in-each-corner-of-square-plate

What can only be described as Manchester’s chocolate paradise, Slattery has become an iconic brand in the North West, well-known for its fine chocolates and pâtissier in Whitefield and their food challenge. For those with a  sweet tooth, you can take on a whopping chocolate challenge consisting of a giant slab of American-style chocolate fudge cake , fresh cream , a portion of chocolate ice cream , two chocolate pots filled with melted chocolate and a tall hot chocolate topped off with cream and a piece of chocolate. It’s not for the faint-hearted but definitely worth a try!

8. See a show at the Palace Theatre

palace-theatre-manchester-hamilton-musical-uk-tour

The historic Palace Theatre has been an Oxford Street landmark since 1891 and hosted some of the biggest touring productions in the UK. The theatre is often the first stop for shows fresh from the West End including the likes of The Book of Mormon . The Palace Theatre will also be the first theatre outside of London to welcome the smash hit Hamilton later this year before it tours the UK more widely.

9. Explore all the galleries and exhibitions at Manchester Museum

T Rex at Manchester Museum

Reopening in February 2023 after a £15m refurbishment, Manchester Museum is bigger, better and busier than ever – therefore it is a must-visit. The neo-Gothic building’s new extension includes a new exhibition hall, which is hosting the Golden Mummies of Egypt exhibition until the end of 2023. There’s also a South Asia Gallery in partnership with the British Museum, a new Lee Kai Chinese Culture Gallery , the Belonging Gallery and a brand new Dinosaur display .

10. Visit the world famous Bury Market

bury-market-greater-manchester

Venture out of the city centre of Manchester and head to the award winning Bury Market, plus it’s right next door to the tram station. Voted Britain’s favourite market for the second time in 2022, if you haven’t visited Bury Market you need to definitely see what the fuss is about. Providing fantastic local produce for over 500 years now, Bury Market has long held a place in the heart of Mancs – and has over 370 stalls to potter , with pretty much everything you could think of on offer. Famed for its black pudding stalls , you also can’t go home without one (there are vegan black puddings available too).

11. Get your culture fix at The Lowry

The unique exterior of The Lowry art gallery and cultural centre in Manchester, Greater Manchester

Located in the heart of Salford Quays, The Lowry is a stunning beacon of modern architecture housing two theatres and several galleries . Here, you’ll find a permanent exhibition of work by its namesake artist L.S. Lowry, featuring the well-known artwork ‘Going to the Match’ . 12. Watch a live sports game

places to visit in manchester for couples

Manchester is home to some top sports teams , so why wouldn’t we go and see what they can do? Whether it be a football match at Old Trafford or the Etihad, a Sale Sharks or Salford Red Devils rugby game at the AJ Bell, a cricket match at Emirates Old Trafford, netball team Manchester Thunder at Belle Vue Sports Village or ice hockey team Manchester Storm in Altrincham, there are plenty of teams to cheer on. Not only does it mean support for these teams, you might even discover a new sport you like in the process.

13. Marvel at the beauty of John Rylands Library

john-rylands-library-relax-in-manchester

One of Manchester’s most striking buildings, the neo-Gothic grade I listed library looks like something from a Harry Potter film inside. Quite the contrast to the nearby glass buildings in Spinningfields and the bustle of Deansgate, you’ll feel both calm and like you’ve stepped back in time once you enter. The reading room is magnificent thanks to its vaulted ceiling, statues of notable writers, spectacular stained glass windows, stone arches and cosy alcoves. Its collection includes some impressive historical texts , including papyrus fragments believed to be a section of the New Testament.

14. Enjoy a drink by New Islington Marina

new-islington-marina-canal

If you’ve not visited New Islington Marina in Ancoats then where have you been? This waterside spot comes alive in the summer time with people flocking to the area for a cheeky tipple or two with a rather scenic backdrop. Sit here with a glass of beer, wine or even a coffee, and watch the world go by as people walk past (many with dogs) and the canal boats floating on the still water. It’s quite the suntrap and will make you feel like you’re abroad and not in the centre of Manchester.

15. Feel like you’ve stepped into the world of Harry Potter at Chethams

manchester-unesco-excellent-city-of-literature

The oldest public library in the English-speaking world, Chetham’s was founded in 1653 , and is famously where Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels began to formulate their Communist Manifesto. The historic building even features the desk where the pair worked in 1845 as well as a rare first version of John Milton’s Paradise Lost , an archive on Belle Vue Zoological Gardens and a Northern Soul collection. The library, which was the potential filming venue for Hogwarts , is also attached to Chetham’s School of Music, whose talented young musicians perform free lunchtime concerts in its Carole Nash Hall on weekdays during term-time.

16. Devour an epic meal on Manchester’s Curry Mile

places to visit in manchester for couples

What is Manchester without its legendary Curry Mile? Though not actually a mile, this stretch of Wilmslow Road in Rusholme , south of the city centre, is home to some of the best and oldest Indian , Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants in Manchester. Restaurants started popping up on Wilmslow Road in the fifties and sixties as immigrants from the South Asian subcontinent arrived in Manchester to work in the city’s textile industry. Noteworthy restaurants on the ‘Curry Mile’ include Chit ‘n’ Chaat , Mussarat’s , Mughli Charcoal Pit , Ziya and Bardez .

17. Explore Manchester’s amazing street art

bird-mural-street-art-in-manchester-northern-quarter

Manchester is known for many things, but one thing visitors and locals alike are always surprised and delighted by is the fantastic array of street art we have adorning the sides of our buildings. One area that is particularly popular for artists in need of a canvas is the Northern Quarter , with official plots in the trendy neighbourhood being highly sought after. the-old-wellington-pub-terrace

There’s no shortage of watering holes to choose from in Manchester. Salford-watersports-centre-people-paddleboarding-in-manchester

One way to see the quays from a different perspective is right on the water itself. On a dry day in Manchester paddleboarding is one of the best things to do, plus you can see all the sights as you try your hand at the watersport. At Salford Watersports Centre you can even have a go on one of their giant stand-up paddleboards , which are perfect to try with a group. Whether it’s friends, family, work colleagues or on a Stag or Hen do, you can explore the Manchester waterways together, race against each other or simply see who can stand up for the longest.

20. Eat your way through the menu at a Michelin Guide restaurant

special occasion in Manchester

As well as top food halls and curry houses, Manchester is home to a some top notch dining establishments that will take you on a culinary adventure . Mana , the only Manchester restaurant with a Michelin star , is definitely worth a visit, even if it means saving up for the occasion. However, there are a number of affordable restaurants in Manchester offering fine dining and flavoursome yet elegant dishes , with some featuring in the Michelin Guide.

21. Take a stroll along Castlefield Viaduct

community-gardens-castlefield-gardens

A welcome green addition amongst the industrial backdrop of Manchester, Castlefield Viaduct is definitely worth a wander along. The National Trust transformed a disused Victorian era railway viaduct into a stunning new green space for city dwellers , with a similar approach to New York’s famous High Line . The elevated garden has provided a much-needed slice of nature for Mancs, with a variety of stunning plants and flowers completely taking over the space and giving it a whole new lease of life.

Home to a huge range of shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and experiences , you could spend an entire day at the Trafford Centre. Plus at neighbouring Trafford Palazzo, you’ll find the LEGO Discovery Centre, SEA LIFE Manchester, King Pins and NERF Xperience , all worth a visit at least once.

the-midland-hotel-afternoon-tea

Manchester’s iconic hotel has also been serving afternoon tea to its guests for 120 years, making it the longest-running afternoon menu in Manchester’s history . If you’re looking for a party, look no further than Canal Street and the surrounding streets that make up the Gay Village. Canal Street itself is lined with bars and clubs , most of them with terraces where you can enjoy a waterside drink by day, but it’s at night when the area really comes alive. Offering a new way to hit the pedal to the metal is Chaos Karts , an attraction which combines real-life racing with augmented reality , and you can find it right here in Manchester.
