Asian Tour unveils early 2023 schedule ahead of strongest-ever season
The Asian Tour has unveiled its 2023 schedule through May, for what promises to be the finest start to a season the Tour has ever enjoyed.
The campaign will commence in Saudi Arabia, at the most lucrative event of the year, before being followed by an exciting blend of established and new tournaments, including four International Series events.
The impressive schedule boasts a total of 11 tournaments contested over 14 weeks, starting with the $5 million PIF Saudi International — won dramatically by American Harold Varner III this year when he holed a 92-foot eagle putt on the 72nd hole – at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, near Jeddah, from February 2-5.

The Tour will then journey to two inaugural International Series tournaments in Oman and then Qatar – marking the first time the International Series will have visited the Middle East. Al Mouj Golf will host the former event, while Doha Golf Club will stage the latter.
These will be the first of an expanded 10 International Series events in 2023, with International Series stops to follow in Hua Hin, Thailand, in March, and Cam Ranh, Vietnam the following month. The International Series Thailand launched the International Series earlier this year and saw American Sihwan Kim triumph at Black Mountain Golf Club, while the Tour visits the spectacular KN Golf Links for the first edition of the Vietnam event. This will be the first time the Asian Tour will return to Vietnam in seven years.
The New Zealand Open makes a popular return to the calendar following a two-year COVID-19 enforced break in the first week of March at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown – the tournament’s home since 2014.
The DGC Open, inaugurated in the 2022 season, will also be staged in March at the historic Delhi Golf Club, as well as the Tour’s long-awaited return to Hong Kong with a new event at one of the region’s most iconic golfing venues, the Hong Kong Golf Club.
“We are very proud to announce the start of the 2023 season, hot off the heels of a tremendous 2022. It is fantastic to see us carry the momentum of the season we have just completed and start the new season at full pace.” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.
“The Asian Tour is absolutely thrilled with how the schedule looks. It reaches a wide range of exciting destination, offers extremely lucrative purses, world-class venues and a great balance of established and new events.
“The PIF Saudi International, a truly global golfing event, is the perfect way to start the season and sets the tone for what will be, unquestionably, the strongest season in the history of the Asian Tour.”

FOUR INTERNATIONAL SERIES EVENTS PART OF ASIAN TOUR'S EARLY 2023 SCHEDULE
Four International Series tournaments, including debut events in the Middle East and trips to Thailand and Vietnam, are included in the early portion of the 2023 Asian Tour schedule released Friday .
The 2023 season will mark the second year of the LIV Golf-supported International Series, the ground-breaking set of elevated events on the Asian Tour that recognizes and develops next-generation stars while providing playing opportunities for LIV Golf members. LIV Golf has made a sizable commitment to the International Series, with prize purses of $2 million or more for each tournament to help invigorate the game in Asia and the Middle East.
The International Series also offers a pathway to playing privileges at LIV Golf events. Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent won the International Series Order of Merit in 2022 and received an exemption to play in the upcoming 2023 LIV Golf League . Vincent and several others also played a full LIV schedule in 2022 thanks to their success in last year’s International Series events.
The 2023 Asian Tour season will open with its flagship event, the $5 million PIF Saudi International powered by Softbank Investment Advisers on Feb. 2-5. Royal Greens Golf and Country Club, site of the last regular-season event during the inaugural 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series, is the tournament venue for the fifth consecutive year. The defending champion is current LIV Golf member Harold Varner III, who won in dramatic fashion with a 92-foot eagle putt on the final hole to beat Bubba Watson; the two eventually became teammates on Niblicks GC, with Watson the non-playing captain while recovering from knee surgery.
The first International Series tournament takes place the following week, Feb. 9-12 in Oman. The $2 million event will be held in Muscat at Al Mouj Golf, Oman’s first links-style course set along more than a mile of coastline along the Indian Ocean. The layout, designed by LIV Golf CEO and Commissioner Greg Norman, is considered the second-best course in the region, according to the Top 100 Golf Courses rankings. It will be the first International Series event ever held in the Middle East.
The International Series will remain in the Middle East for the event in Qatar, Feb. 16-19. The host course for the $2.5 million tournament is Doha Golf Club, among the oldest golf destinations in the region. Current LIV members Branden Grace, Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson have won professional events at Doha, which first hosted the Qatar Masters in 1998.
International Series Thailand will return to Black Mountain Golf Club on March 9-12. Located in the foothills outside the royal town of Hua Hin, Black Mountain has been voted as Thailand’s top course seven times and hosted its first professional event in 2009. Last year, it was the venue for the first of seven International Series events, with Sihwan Kim winning the title that helped lead to several LIV Golf starts.
A month later, International Series Vietnam will be played at KN Golf Links in Cam Ranh on April 13-16. The Norman-designed signature course, a links-style layout with views of the South China Sea, ranks among the best in Asia. It will be the first time in seven years that the Asian Tour has played in Vietnam.
A total of 10 International Series events will be part of the full 2023 Asian Tour schedule, with the remaining six in the series to be included in future announcements.
“The Asian Tour is absolutely thrilled with how the schedule looks,” Asian Tour Commissioner and CEO Cho Minn Thant said in Friday's news release. “It reaches a wide range of exciting destinations, offers extremely lucrative purses, world-class venues and a great balance of established and new events.”

2023 Hong Kong Open final results: Prize money payout, leaderboard and how much each golfer won
The 2023 Hong Kong Open final leaderboard is headed by winner Ben Campbell, who earned the Asian Tour win at Hong Kong Golf Club in Hong Kong.
Campbell earned a huge win for his career considering not only the purse but also the competition, as Campbell beat Cam Smith by a shot on 19-under 261. Smith was making the rare Asian Tour start with the LIV Golf season now done for 2023.
Phachara Khongwatmai and Richard T. Lee finished in a tie for third place.
Campbell won the $360,000 winner's share of the $2,000,000 purse.
Hong Kong Open recap notes
Campbell earned 11.9 Official World Golf Ranking points with the win. The field for the tournament was modest, mostly filled with Asian Tour regulars.
There was a cut this week, with 79 players finishing the event in the 22nd event of the season.
The 2023 Asian Tour schedule continues next week with the BNI Indonesian Masters.

The 2023 Asian Swing – How it unfolded
The DP World Tour returned to the Far East for the first time since 2019 with a three-event Asian Swing.
Following on from a four-week run in the United Arab Emirates, the DP World Tour made eagerly anticipated returns to Singapore, Thailand and India.
As the schedule pauses for the first time in 2023, we look back on the past three weeks in Asia.
Strydom surges to Singapore win
After a nine-year wait, the DP World Tour returned to Singapore where South African Ockie Strydom claimed his second title in three months.
Strydom, who won the Alfred Dunhill Championship on home soil earlier in the season, fired a closing bogey-free nine under par 63 to win the inaugural Singapore Classic at Laguna National Golf Resort Club.
Sami Välimäki appeared well set to end his near three-year wait for a second Tour title when the Finn moved into a three-shot lead after ten holes in the final round.
However, Strydom worked his way back into a share of the lead on two occasions before the decisive moment came when he made his ninth birdie of the day with an impressive up and down from beyond the 18th green.
"I was thinking about not being here this week because I was hitting it so badly,” he said. “My coach flew in and my wife said to me, ‘listen, maybe this is your week’. And look what happened, it’s my week.”
Olesen eases to four-shot Thailand triumph
A week later, Amata Spring Country Club played host to the Thailand Classic as it made its return after a seven-year absence from the schedule.
The event saw Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Thongchai Jaidee enjoy the comforts of playing on home soil, but it was Thorbjørn Olesen who lifted the trophy.
In a week tinged with sadness as the Tour lost legendary referee John Paramor, Ryder Cup star Olesen made a successful first appearance in Thailand.
The Dane, who won the Betfred British Masters last year, held a two-shot lead heading into the final round and was never caught by the chasing pack as he went on to win by four shots from German Yannik Paul.
Despite facing pressure from countryman Nicolai Højgaard on the front nine, Olesen seized control with a hat-trick of birdies from the 13th to claim his seventh Tour success and move back inside the top 100 on the Official World Golf Ranking.
“I feel like the way I played today under pressure is something that gives me a lot of confidence going forward,” he said. “There is still a lot of work to do, but this is a big step in the right direction.”
Siem ends long wait for fifth DP World Tour title
After four years away due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Hero Indian Open made a welcome return to the DP World Tour schedule at the imposing DLF Golf and Country Club.
Marcel Siem celebrated a memorable return to the winner’s circle after he fought off fellow German Yannik Paul to claim his fifth DP World Tour victory, eight years and 116 days on from his last DP World Tour victory at the BMW Masters.
The 42-year-old, who secured his card for the 2023 season at the Qualifying School in November, went into the final round one shot behind overnight leader Paul but made four birdies over the first 11 holes to move two strokes clear.
Despite a bogey at the 13th, Siem recovered to birdie the 15th and regain the solo lead before parring his way home to triumph in his 502nd DP World Tour start.
The 42-year-old has enjoyed a stellar start to the season, registering five top 20s in addition to his victory and is yet to miss a cut.
"Winning a golf tournament, being back in the winner’s circle now, it means everything to me,” he added. “It’s just unbelievable.”

2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans money: Purse, winner’s share, updated prize money payout
T he 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans prize money payout is from the $8.9 million purse, with 80 professional players who complete four rounds at TPC Louisiana in the Avondale, La., earning PGA Tour prize money this week.
The winner's share of Zurich Classic of New Orleans prize pool is $2,572,100 ($1,286,050 to each player on the team), with the second-place finishers taking home $1,050,200 ($525,100 each) in PGA Tour prize money today. The Zurich Classic of New Orleans prize-money payout breakdown shows a payout of 18 percent of the purse to the winner, and how much each PGA Tour player earns is guaranteed down to the last-place professional team, which is $32,218 ($16,109 each). Prize money is updated after the cut is made to guarantee all professional players who make the cut earn cash.
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans field is headed by Rory McIlroy , Shane Lowry , Zac Blair, Patrick Fishburn, Nick Taylor, Adam Hadwin and more. The PGA Tour leaderboard is topped by Blair and Fishburn, who seek a huge win toward helping their status on the PGA Tour -- particularly for Fishburn.
This tournament started with 160 players, and a cut was made this week after two rounds. Every professional player in the field is paid for completing the event, but how much each player is paid at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans from the correct 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans full-field payout is based on their finish.
The 36-hole cut is typically made to the top 65 players and ties, with every player able to move up in the final round. However, in this unique event, the cut was made to the top 33 teams (66 players) and ties.
The 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans prize money payout is set ahead of the event, with the PGA Tour adding money to the purse if more than 65 professionals make the cut to ensure all players are paid, as is the case this week.
What else is on the line
Beyond money, there are important points, perks and benefits on the line for the field -- in particular, the tournament winner.
The winner of this event will each get 400 FedEx Cup points, as is the practice for this team event, splitting the combined first- and second-place FedEx Cup points for an individual event.
There are no Official World Golf Ranking points on the line for the winners, as team events cannot be rated for points.
While this event offers a significant payday, the win comes with enhanced PGA Tour status. The winner gets berths into the PGA Championship and the remaining Signature events this year, along with a two-year PGA Tour exemption.

2024 Kentucky Derby expert picks, post positions, odds, time: Insider fading Fierceness at Churchill Downs
Beyer speed figure maker bob weir reveals his picks for saturday's kentucky derby 2024 at churchill downs.
There are two pairs of siblings that will compete at the 2024 Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Just Steel and Just a Touch were sired by Justify, who is the 2018 Triple Crown winner. They have different dams, so the two are half-brothers, as are another pair of Kentucky Derby 2024 contenders. Dornoch and Society Man were sired by Good Magic, who coincidentally finished as runner-up to Justify at the 2018 Kentucky Derby. Of those four 2024 Kentucky Derby horses, Just a Touch has the shortest 2024 Kentucky Derby odds at 10-1. Dornoch is 20-1 and drew the rail, while his brother, Society Man, drew the outside No. 20 post and is a 50-1 longshot. The 2024 Kentucky Derby favorite is Fierceness at 5-2, followed by Sierra Leone at 3-1.
Post time for the first leg of the Triple Crown is set for 6:57 p.m. ET. With the Kentucky Derby offering arguably the best betting opportunity of any single sporting event of the year, you'll want to see what Saratoga Springs-based racing insider and Beyer Speed Figure maker Bob Weir has to say before making any 2024 Kentucky Derby picks .
A member of the Beyer Speed Figure-making team since 2017, Weir is a two-time qualifier for the prestigious National Horseplayers Championship in Las Vegas. He has produced multiple five-figure days at the track over the years, including a $60,000 Pick 6 at Del Mar in 2014 and an $18,000 Pick 5 at Tampa Bay Downs in early April.
In April of last year, he hit a Pick 4 at Gulfstream Park for $641, the exacta in the Florida Derby, a Pick 5 at Keeneland and the exacta in the Lexington Stakes. He smashed the trifecta in the Belmont Stakes for $532.96, and later in June he crushed a Pick 4 at Belmont for $555. Those were just some of his scores from 2023.
For Saturday, he has handicapped the 2024 Kentucky Derby lineup, made his picks and constructed his bets. You can head to SportsLine now to see them .
Top 2024 Kentucky Derby predictions
One surprise: Weir is fading Fierceness, even though he is the top favorite. Trained by two-time Derby-winning trainer Todd Pletcher, Fierceness has three wins and one third in five career starts. He is coming off a resounding 13½-length victory in the Florida Derby.
But Fierceness failed both times he tried to win back-to-back starts, losing in the Champagne Stakes in October and Holy Bull Stakes in February. "I can't get past the fact that he hasn't put together two good races in a row in his short career," Weir told SportsLine. Weir prefers two 2024 Kentucky Derby horses more than Fierceness.
Another curveball: Weir is high on the chances of Japanese invader Forever Young, even though he's a 10-1 longshot. The Japanese-bred horse is one of two in the 2024 Kentucky Derby field to enter undefeated. He's won all five starts, including the UAE Derby in his last race on March 30. That's a notable race to win since its distance of 1 3/16 miles is closer in length to the 1 1/4-mile Kentucky Derby than any other prep race.
The horse's connections are new to the Kentucky Derby stage, but trainer Yoshito Yahagi isn't new to North American horseracing. He collected two victories at the 2021 Breeders' Cup in Del Mar, and Weir notes that Forever Young's speed figures are comparable with most of the 2024 Kentucky Derby field. You can see all of Weir's 2024 Kentucky Derby bets here .
How to make 2024 Kentucky Derby picks
Moreover, Weir is high on a big double-digit longshot who "could be ready for his best." Weir is including this surprising horse in his 2024 Kentucky Derby bets, and so should you. He's sharing which horses to back only at SportsLine .
So who wins the Kentucky Derby 2024, and what double-digit longshot is a must-back? Check out the latest 2024 Kentucky Derby odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Weir's picks for the Kentucky Derby, all from the horse racing insider who has had multiple five-figure days at the track and just hit an $18,000 payday , and find out.

Zac Blair, Patrick Fishburn atop leaderboard going into PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic final round
AVONDALE – Utah natives and former Brigham Young University teammates Zac Blair and Patrick Fishburn shot a 12-under 60 in four-ball (best ball) – one shy of a tournament record – to take the lead on April 27 after three rounds at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
The team are at 23-under 193, one shot ahead of American Luke List and Sweden’s Henrik Norlander (62) at the TPC Louisiana in Avondale.
“It’s pretty easy to hit shots when Zac is always in the fairway, always on the green,” Fishburn said.
“He’s always available. That’s kind of been our keyword for the week. It’s pretty easy for me to swing free knowing that Zac is always going to be there. He had some awesome birdies when we needed them, and we ham-and-egged it really good today.”
Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Shane Lowry of Ireland (64) are two strokes back, tied for third with Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard (64).
Blair and Fishburn, each looking for his first PGA Tour victory, carded 29 on the front nine with an eagle at the par-five No. 2 and five birdies.
They stayed hot with another five birdies, which left them one stroke off the 18-hole tournament record of 59 set by Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele in round one of the 2022 event.
Blair, who has been playing golf with Fishburn since they were children in Ogden, Utah, said he was not disappointed that they did not tie the record.
“I think we would have signed up for a 60 at the start of the day. We hit some good shots, hit some good putts, and we had a good day.”
Blair credited Fishburn for the tandem’s hot start, saying, “It was pretty textbook out there for him.”
Fishburn, a tour rookie, had made two cuts in nine starts in 2024 entering the week. Blair is making his 185th start on tour and his best finish is a tie for second at the 2023 Travelers Championship.
List is seeking his third PGA title and Norlander his first in his 167th start after three ties for second place in his career.
The residents of Augusta, Georgia, helped their cause with an eagle on No. 2, another on the par-five 11th, and six birdies.
The team event moves back to foursomes (alternate shot) for the final round on April 28. REUTERS

By the numbers: Statistics confirm Scottie Scheffler's historical dominance
Change Text Size
Is impending fatherhood the only thing stopping Scottie Scheffler? Quite possibly.
His historic run continued Monday when he completed his victory at the RBC Heritage. It was his fourth win in his past five starts, a run that also included victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, THE PLAYERS Championship and the Masters. The only exception was a runner-up finish at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, where he missed a 6-footer to join Stephan Jaeger in a playoff.
Scottie Scheffler’s Round 4 highlights From RBC Heritage
Scheffler has seemed invincible lately, and the statistics confirm that. Here’s a closer look at some of the key stats that put Scheffler’s historic play into perspective:
- By winning at Harbour Town Golf Links, Scheffler became the first player since Bernhard Langer in 1985 to win the RBC Heritage one week after winning the Masters .
- Scheffler is the first player since Tiger Woods in 2006 to win the week after winning a major .
- With four wins and a runner-up in his past five starts, Scheffler is the first player since Woods in 2007-08 to have five consecutive top-two finishes . Vijay Singh is the only other player to have such a run in the past 30 years (2004).
- This was Scheffler’s 10th PGA TOUR victory, coming in just his 51st start since he earned his first win at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. Only David Duval has needed fewer starts after his first win to reach victory No. 10. Duval did it in 33 starts. Tiger Woods is third on the list with 59 starts.
- In his 51 starts since the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, Scheffler also has 23 top-three finishes (45%) and 35 top-10s (68.6%).
- All 10 of Scheffler’s wins have come since the start of the 2021-22 season. He is the first player to win 10 (or more) times on the PGA TOUR in the span of three seasons since Dustin Johnson won 10 titles between 2015-16 and 2017-18.
- This is Scheffler’s fourth win of the season, matching his career-high from 2022. He is the fourth player with multiple four-win seasons since the start of 2000 , joining Woods (10), Singh, (3) and Phil Mickelson (2).
- Scheffler has now recorded 40 consecutive TOUR rounds at par or better , a streak that began in the final round of the 2023 TOUR Championship. He’s 12 back of Woods’ all-time TOUR mark of 52 straight rounds at par or better (set across 2000-01).
- In each of Scheffler’s last seven victories, eight or more of the top 10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking have been in the field . His most recent run of four wins in five starts has included two Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, RBC Heritage), THE PLAYERS and the Masters.
- Scheffler is averaging 5.38 birdies per round this season, on pace to set the all-time TOUR record for single-season birdie average (since the statistic was first tracked in 1980) . Woods set the current record (4.92) in 2020.
- In his 39 rounds this season, he has outperformed the field average 35 times . He’s been at least a shot better than the field 30 times, at least two shots better 26 times and at least three shots better 19 times.
- Scheffler leads the TOUR in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green by nearly a shot per round this season , after finishing atop the category by more than two-thirds of a stroke per round last season. No player had previously led the category by more than four-tenths of a stroke per round since Woods in 2009.
