On the wedding night, she finds out about his heart condition and soon after, he dies. To make matters worse, she is kidnapped and thrown into a well. A portal opens and she is sucked into it.

She comes out of a swimming pool in the 21st century. The person who saves her is a rich businessman named Kang Tae-Ha who looks like Yeon-Woo’s late husband. Due to family pressure, Tae-Ha convinces her into a marriage contract.

Moon in the Day

Moon in the Day is another ongoing time-travel K-drama. It tells the tragic love story of Do Ha (Kim Young-Dae), who is a general in the Silla Dynasty. He falls in love with a traitor’s daughter Ha Ri-Ta ( Pyo Ye-Jin ) who wants to kill him. The two get married because of his evil stepfather. Eventually, they fall in love. The twist to the tale is that Ri-Ta kills Do Ha, who becomes a vengeful spirit and wanders the Earth for 1,500 years.

MBC’s webtoon-based drama Joseon Lawyer  (2023) follows the story of a lawyer in Joseon Dynasty who takes revenge against the perpetrator who caused his parent’s death. Eventually, he transforms into an attorney with a heart for people and becomes involved with a princess and a judge, starring Woo Do-hwan, Bona, and Cha Hak-yeon. Namgoong Min will play a man who declares that he will not marry after experiencing an unimaginable tragedy but unexpectedly finds himself attracted to a nobleman’s daughter who is known as a socialite goddess for her beauty and charm, to be portrayed by Ahn Eun-jin. The historical-romantic series is expected to broadcast in the first half of 2023.

Netflix’s  Song Of The Bandits  (2023) is a historical-action series that follows the story of Koreans who have been deprived of their own place to live   in the 1920s during the Japanese colonial period. Kim Nam-gil will play the former Japanese soldier who becomes a bandit protecting Koreans against the Japanese military. 10. The Secret Romantic Guest House

SBS’  The Secret Romantic Guest House (2023) is a youthful sageuk-romance drama with a touch of mystery that takes place at a boarding house called Yihwawon or Guest Summer Place. It revolves around four youths, a lovely lady who runs the inn and three scholars who stay at the inn to prepare for the national exam. What would happen when two people who like to put on a false appearance meet? Ji Yuan Su was a capable crown prince, yet he always pretended to be a useless and willful prince. Hua Liu Li was a strong and sharp girl born into a military family. However, she always pretended to be a weak girl.

Both of them knew each other’s secret personality but decided to play along with the farce. Their constant interactions warmed their heart and the bickering turned into their love language.

Shuai Jia Mo’s obsession helped him to discover a tax discrepancy in Renhua that burdened the taxpayer for 100 years. Together with his friend Feng Bao Yu, Shuai Jia Mo filed for complaints. However, their action caused an uproar in eight counties.

1. "Knight Flower" - 18.4%

Starring Lee Hanee and Lee JongWon , the historical drama "Knight Flower" starred high in ratings and quickly reached high ratings. The drama gained even more popularity in its last weeks and reached the ratings of 18.4% with its final episode. In 2024, the drama broke the previous records held by "The Red Sleeve". The drama is available on Viki, Kocowa, Apple TV, and Prime Video.

2. " The Red Sleeve " - 17.4%

Among historical K-Dramas, "The Red Sleeve" was phenomenally made, filled with moments of romance and yearning that cannot be easily forgotten. Due to its massive success, it gained 17.4% ratings, making it the highest rated series among MBC K-Dramas from 2020 to 2023. 3. " Big Mouth " - 13.7%

"Big Mouth" made big waves during its initial run. The chemistry between Lee JongSuk and Girls' Generation's YoonA was magnificent, and combined with a compelling storyline, it became an immediate hit, reaching 13.7% ratings. The drama can be watched via streaming site Hulu.

4. "My Dearest (part 1 & 2)" - 12.9%

Starring NamKoong Min and Ahn EunJin , "My Dearest" gained massive success and tugged on the heartstrings of all its viewers with a total of 21 episodes. Reaching its highest rating of 12.9% with the final episodes, it puts the series as one of the most watched of MBC. "My Dearest" is currently available on Rakuten Viki and Kocowa.

5. "Wonderful World" - 11.4%

"Wonderful World" (2024) is a revenge and thriller drama starring Kim NamJoo and ASTRO 's Cha EunWoo . The drama went viral on social media and the mysterious story caught attention. The drama peaked at 11.4% with its 9th, 11th, and 13th episodes. It started at 5.3%.

6. "Chief Detective 1958" - 10.8%

The retro crime drama "Chief Detective 1958" starring Lee JeHoon , Lee DongHwi , Choi WooSung , Yoon HyunSoo , and Seo EunSoo started with 10.1% and reached 10.8% with its 3rd episode. "The Story of Park's Marriage Contract" based on webtoon gained a lot of popularity. Bae InHyuk and Lee SeYoung 's chemistry was amazing and the story was full of mystery so the drama gained a lot of viewers. The drama started at 5.6% and reached the highest rating of 9.6%.

9. " Tracer " - 9.0%

This MBC drama depicted the hard working performance of the National Tax Service. Featuring a cast with Yim SiWan , Go AhSung , Son HyunJoo , and much more, "Tracer" reached its highest rating at 9.0%, earning it the fifth spot among MBC dramas so far. 10. " The Golden Spoon " - 7.8%

"The Golden Spoon" is a webtoon-based drama that followed poor, yet studious Lee SeungCheon ( BTOB's SungJae ) and chaebol son Hwang TaeYong ( Lee JongWon ) as they switched lives during adolescence and adulthood. The drama explored the stark differences between the extremely rich and those living in poverty. While there were moments of crushing heartache, there were scenes of uplifting hope that lit up all the dark spaces in your heart. 11. " Tomorrow " - 7.6%

While this webtoon-based drama had various moments of uplifting comedy, it also did an excellent job at exploring hard-hitting topics. This involved aspects of mental health, life after death and those left behind, as well as the will to live on. At its highest peak, "Tomorrow" earned 7.6% in ratings. This MBC K-Drama is available on streaming platform, Netflix.

12. " Doctor Lawyer " - 7.2%

Starring the iconic actor, So JiSub , "Doctor Lawyer" is a fusion of medical and law, providing the best of both worlds. As Han YiHan (So JiSub) searched for the truth, viewers could not help but remain by his side. 15. " Find Me In Your Memory " - 5.4%

"Find Me In Your Memory" is a moving story between Lee JungHoon ( Kim DongWook ) and Yeo HaJin ( Mun KaYoung ). While the drama had its fair share of romance, it also offered moments of healing that aided broken souls everywhere. 16. " The Forbidden Marriage " - 4.9%

1. "Queen of Tears" - 24.8%

The awaited K-Drama "Queen of Tears" (2024) with top Hallyu stars Kim SooHyun and Kim JiWon started with 5.9% and reached impressive ratings of 24.8% with its final episode.  Viewers were hooked and the drama went viral for its story and amazing acting.

2. " Crash Landing On You " - 21.7%

The drama "Crash Landing On You" (2019-2020) with Hyun Bin and Son YeJin makes tvN history by breaking the record of its highest ratings. With the final episode of the drama, the drama ratings reached 21.7%. The love story of the North Korean soldier and South Korean chaebol hooked the country.

3. "Goblin" - 20.5%

The drama "Goblin" also titled "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God" aired in 2016-2017 starring Gong Yoo , Kim GoEun , Lee DongWook and more. In and out of Korea, the drama was extremely popular. There was definitely a "Goblin craze". The final episode of the drama reached its highest personal ratings at 20.5%. "Goblin" held the record of tvN best ratings until "Crash Landing on You" broke it.

4. "Reply 1988" - 18.8%

The "Replies" series were popular and "Reply 1988" (2015-2016) was the most popular. The last episode reached 18.8%. Girl's Day 's HyeRi , Park BoGum , Go KyungPyo , Ryu JunYeol and Lee DongHwi acted in the drama.

5. " Mr. Sunshine " - 18.1%

The historical drama "Mr. Sunshine" (2018) with Lee ByungHun and Kim TaeRi had a huge budget and it received a lot of love in and outside of Korea. The drama scored 18.1% of ratings on its last episode.

The results for the 2024 Overseas Hallyu Survey is out, naming both BTS and BLACKPINK as the two groups dominating overseas fans' top 5 K-Pop artists list.

The K-Pop industry is known to be a revolving door of innovation, creativity, and impactful star presence. The Hallyu wave has effectively taken over the world with idol groups and soloists, along with riveting K-Dramas at the forefront. Just like previous years, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism conducted the Overseas Hallyu Survey to determine overseas fans' favorites in various categories.

The main purpose of this survey is to compile the data on the impact of the Hallyu wave. With a sample size of 25,000 people from over 26 countries, the 2024 Overseas Hallyu Survey tries its best to show an accurate representation of what types of K-Content is being consumed in different countries.

In one part of the survey, respondents were asked "Who is currently your favorite Korean group/artists?". Let's find out their answers below!

Top 5 Favorite K-Pop Groups/Artists

With an impressive 29.1%, BTS takes the top spot among overseas fans' favorite K-Pop idol groups/artists. While the BTS members were active with solo schedules, they slowly made their way into the army, one by one, in order to carry out their mandatory military enlistment. Despite fulfilling their national duty, the iconic boy group's musical influence, positivity, and unique outlook have cemented them as a top idol group.

2. BLACKPINK

Following in second is world-renowned girl group BLACKPINK. They were selected by 13.1% of respondents as their favorite idol group. After the conclusion of their Born Pink World Tour, the iconic girl group decided to stay together with YG for group promotions, but would pursue their individual endeavors under a separate companies. Despite this, the very essence of BLACKPINK still resonated deeply with K-Pop fans across the globe for both their music and individuality.

When 'Gangnam Style' first dominated the world charts, it seemed like a fever dream. However, through its success, the Korean wave was able to make a resounding resurgence worldwide. This international success has remained with Psy since, praised for his contributions to Korean entertainment and culture. Psy had a somewhat quiet 2023 but was still able to fill concert venues and remained at the forefront of overseas fans' hearts, being selected by 2.9%.

BTS as a whole were successful soloists in 2023, however, the one member who was selected by 2.7% of overseas fans as their favorite artist was none other than the golden maknae himself, BTS' JungKook. Coming out with the album "GOLDEN", comprised of hits like 'Seven', 'Standing Next To You', and '3D', JungKook's career was elevated to another level. He was able to showcase his individuality as an artist, becoming a beloved name among the K-Pop community and beyond.

In the meantime, Dao schemes up a plan. He asks the oldest Mahasak son, Prajek, to marry his daughter and he will automatically clear their debt. Dao loves his daughter Wanida very much and wants her to have a noble name.

When Wanida discovers that she is part of a loveless arranged marriage, she becomes angry and headstrong… which is how Prajek starts falling for her.

A classic Thai film, Koo Gum has many adaptations from a novel. The story is set during World War II when Japan invades Thailand and sets up a base camp at Chaopraya River.

Because of this, Angsulamin, who lives near the Chaopraya River, hates the Japanese and is very angry that they have come to be near her home.

Kobori is a Japanese soldier who was stationed at this camp and falls in love with Ang at first sight! Even though he knows she hates him, he still loves her and treats her with respect.

Rumors start flying about Kobori and Ang along with desires to strengthen the Thai-Japan bond, Kobori and Ang both get married. She starts to warm up to Kobori, but her lover has returned to Thailand.

Personal Note: I absolutely love this film and all the adaptations. I first saw the 1988 movie and fell in love even though this is a tragic love story. In my research, only the 2013 movie has been English subtitled online . Enjoy!

Fah Pieng Din (Sky’s Only Land) 2001, 2022

Celica is the daughter of a wealthy man. Although he owns many houses, Celica and her father would prefer to live alone in the country.

Tewarat is Celica’s cousin and he loves her, but his family enjoys wealth. They plan to go and prepare a place for Celica and her father to move into. However, during the transition, Celica and her father are ambushed.

Before he dies, Celica’s father imprints her with a mark in case anyone doubts that she is truly his daughter. The Mayor of the city takes in Celica when he finds her in the aftermath. To protect her, he changes her name and raises her as his daughter.

Things start to get hairy when it’s time for Celica to go back and claim her right as the owner’s daughter. What will Tewarat think about losing his inheritance?

Personal Note: Another favorite of mine, but unfortunately there aren’t any English subtitles for this drama. There is, however, a 2022 remake with complete English subtitles on Youtube !

Ban Sai Thong (Golden Sand House) 2000, 2015

After her father passes away, Pojaman wants to obey his wishes and moves to Ban Sai Thong to live with her aunt Phanarai.

Though she is technically family, they all treat her terribly except for the oldest son Chai Klang and the youngest son Chai Noi.

When Chai Klang discovers that their house actually belongs to Pojaman, he does all he can to return the house to her.

In the midst of obstacles, Chai Klang and Pojaman fall in love – but what price will they have to pay?

Personal Note: Ban Sai Thong is one of the first Thai dramas I remember watching as a kid with my parents. This was the start of the drama-loving! Unfortunately, there aren’t English subtitles released online, but fingers crossed that someone will pick it up! Ban Sai Thong is clearly a classic!
