Delhi's most underrated attractions for an offbeat experience
TRAVEL TRENDS , DELHI Updated : Jan 31, 2022, 19:52 IST
In a city as old as Delhi, there’s no dearth of ancient monuments in the city to explore. Some of them are exceptionally famous, given the tourist footfall but some among these couldn’t get the fame they deserve! People often tend to overlook some of the city’s equally historic monuments and other spots.
Here, we have handpicked some of Delhi’s most underrated attractions. You can definitely explore these for an offbeat city experience:
Mirza Ghalib ki Haveli
The old soul of Delhi, Chandni Chowk hides many marvels in its crowded lanes. The place is noted for its retail shops and old eateries, and most visitors completely forget that the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk are home to some fascinating ancient structures, including Mirza Ghalib Ki Haveli. Though the haveli is an ASI Protected Monument, it has failed to catch the attention of masses. The haveli, now a museum, features Ghalib’s works as well as his belongings, such as his clothes and books among other things.
Address: Haveli Mirza Galib 2469, Gali Captain, Baradari, Balli Maran, Delhi
Satpula Bridge
Satpula, meaning saat pul or seven bridges, is one of the most overlooked structures in the city, and that’s because of its location. The bridge lies in Saket, which is more prized for its wealthy malls and other elite structures. At present, the bridge is in a dilapidated condition; still, it looks glorious!
Address: Satpula, Khirki Village, Malviya Nagar, Delhi
Jahaz Mahal
Jahaz Mahal or the ship palace is an often overlooked architectural marvel of Delhi! The place was built by Ghiyas-ud-din as a harem for his 15000 maidens. Because the palace resembles a ship, it was named as Jahaz Mahal. The best part of the place is that it is built between two lakes—Munja and Kapur. The halls and cenotaphs are super impressive.
Address: Talaab lane, Aam Bagh, Khandsa Colony, Mehrauli, Delhi
Chunnamal Ki Haveli
A hidden gem in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, Chunnamal ki Haveli is one of the best examples of the phrase, lost in time. Built by Lala Chunna Mal, the first municipal commissioner of British India and an extremely wealthy merchant, the haveli features 128 room lavish rooms, spread over three floors. This is a rare mansion, where one can find an old-style Indian courtyard in a well-preserved condition.
Address: Near Jama Masjid, Old Delhi, Delhi
Kaushal Minar/Chota Qutub Minar
Even the most ardent Delhiites are not aware of the existence of a Chota Qutub Minar , also known as Kaushal Minar, in the city! Situated in village Hastsal in the Uttam Nagar region of West Delhi, Chota Qutub Minar is Shahjahan’s forgotten monument that deserves all attention. Uncovering a Hidden Gem: A Walkthrough The Muddy Yet Incredibly Artsy Kumhar Gram AKA Potters Colony
Concealed in the by lanes of West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area lies the Kumhar Gram, popularly known as Potter’s Colony which inhabits almost 700 potter families. Being the biggest potter’s colony of the city, this profession completely dominates the economy of the area. While these families migrated from Rajasthan to Delhi in search of better opportunities and raising their quality of life, their genius and skill is practically unknown, even to the residents of the nearby areas.
Most of us remember pottery as just another fun activity period in school, but for these people, it’s a way of life! Carrying forward the gift of their ancestors, these families make a living by producing and selling clay items. Not only are they are sold in the nearby markets, but the earthenware they produce is also transported to the high-brow markets of Mumbai and Kolkata. While the mud is bought majorly over from Haryana, all the items are crafted right here.
These families, with no formal training, have passed on the art from generation to generation. But this craft is unlikely to be handed over to the next one now, since the hard work put in to make the products is neither recognized nor paid well (at all!). Sourcing clay and wood for their kilns are one of their biggest problems, due to which many of them have given up manufacturing, but still sell the products of other manufacturers.
This is the one art-turned-means of livelihood that involves the whole family. While one member beats and sieves the mud for stones, the other kneads it with water and turns it into clay. And all the others sit by their wheels to turn lumps of clay into beautiful earthenware. They are then dried and baked in the kilns. And while they’re still a little wet, the artsy member of the family carves them with intricate designs. And if you’re cool enough to break the ice, you might be offered tea in one of those earthen kulhads that these guys made with their own hands. Cool, huh!
Everywhere you look, you can see other potters busy with their wheel and clay, creating extravagant earthenware. While you’re there, you can pick up flower pots, wall hangings, bird-feeders, and all kinds of beautiful pottery items. Their earthen pots for water storage are a huge hit, as it’s one cheap and efficient way to keep water cool, even in the scorching Delhi heat. They also make wall hangings and several specialized potters make glazed pottery - some specializing in fast pot making. Some potters make life-size sculptures of various Gods, and even these are quite striking. The best part? You can get all this at dirt cheap prices!
The majority of their creations are packed away into trucks and delivered to wholesalers. They are then decorated and sold at other places in Delhi like Dilli Haat, or other permanent bazaars at exorbitantly high prices! And these potters earn tiny margins while the lion’s share of the profits goes to the retailers. Though most of the items are available at very low prices like Diyas for Rs 10, earthen pots vary from Rs 200 - 250. They also sell carved flower pots and wall hangings, that can cost up to Rs 1,500.
And without any intention of restricting this art to themselves and their families, they are also open to imparting this storehouse of knowledge to others. So if you want your child to learn the real art of pottery, this place is a must visit for the authentic learning of pottery. We’re mighty impressed and you will be too!

it is an desent place to live. there is big malls like unity one, shoppers stop, etc.restraunts present and easily accessible.regular bus stops and easily accessible to cabs and autos.there is regular supply of electricity and water.hospitals are there.school is present both government and private also in uttam nagar one of the most recognised institution like aakash, target pmt, vidyamandir are there.there are wide roads.
roads are overcrowded with traffic jams. in rainy season some times there is waterlogging. hygiene is not good that is maintainence is required, lack of cleaniness.parks and district centre are not maintained.
Premium location with all living facilities available and accessibl including personal closed parking space for 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler, private terrace - 2nd floor with roof right, good water and electricity connectivity, Gated community with closed residential space, at-hand distance to Schools, Hospital, Market, Metro Station and deliveries
There are no negative sides except little bit traffic problem on Main road but it is resolved due to close Metro connectivity.

Yes we have schools and hospitals and malls nearby our locality. Schools, malls and restaurants are at walking distances from our locality. Yes i completely feel safe at nighttime withing the locality. It is safe for children also to play outside at nighttime. Quality of roads are good and there is low traffic jams and no water clogging during monsoon. Electricity charges are fair enough we don't have to pay any rupee if we use less than 200 units. There are very few power cuts. Yes we have easily accessible local markets and malls nearby.
Sometimes the walking distance to the malls and restaurants feel long as crowd and traffic forms at evening due to so many people coming back from their work offices so you get late to reach malls. Overall it is best locality nothing to dislike much.

streetlight is available for 24hrs and automatically lit in night for walking post 9pm. and near by easily great school, mall and restaurant available so it's easier to avail. and cab/transport easily available because this place center of the main city.
there is nothing to dislike but if I would like to suggest then I will say that there should be cameras also lift. this is not required so much but still if it have then too good.
